PORTFOLIO

about me During my time at school, I was able to partake in studio projects with focuses on non-profit design and construction, educational facilities, museums, as well as urban planning. Now that I have been working professionally for two years, I have been able to get valuable on site experience and have been entrusted with a Project Management position. I have always had a passion for architecture, when most people were doodling in the margins of notebooks in middle school I was drawing plans and elevations; I know that I will carry this passion into any environment I meet.

Fifth Year Fall Semester : Modern Marquee Performing Arts Center located on NCMA campus

Separated from the main masses of the site, this building sits as a piece of sculpture within the sculpture park. The outer skin acts as a modern marquee sign, paying homage to the proscenium theaters on Broadway. The modern marquee draws people to the building, much like the timeless theaters in New York City. The isolation of the site creates a sacred atmosphere and a more intimate experience. This seclusion allows for the idea of the building as sculpture to come to fruition. With sight lines from the main entrance to the campus, the structure invites visitors to experience the space. Taking advantage of existing parking, the building is situated between established built structures and the open meadow.

Fifth Year Fall Semester : Modern Marquee Performing Arts Center located on NCMA campus

With a somewhat simple construction of the main building, the elegance and intrigue of the building comes from the skin that wraps the main performance space. The skin changes materiality in the sense of opacity allowing light to show through to highlights certain spaces of the building beyond.

Professional Experience: Interior Renderings Throughout my time working at Kersting Architecture one of the many tasks that I was in charge of was creating and rendering 3D models of our projects. Over time we have realized that these images are a valuable tool in communicating the design to clients. The renderings on these two pages are just a few of the many projects that I have worked on and presented to clients. Designed by Kersting Architecture

Professional Experience: Project Management After just a year and a half of working professionally I was entrusted with my first Project Management position for a large scale renovation. The renovation included a new kitchen, opening up walls, and renovating a large fireplace mantel. As the project manager I was in charge of the documentation of the design and renovation, as well as all of the client communitcation and site visits. This experience has allowed me to gain confidence in client communication, quick on site decision making, and much more. The project was completed in a speedy 4 month time period, and was extended to include an entire basement renovation for the “Phase 2 of the renovation.

Junior Year Spring Semester : College of Design Expansion BRICK

WALK

Group partners : Kim Janiszewski and Edric Jazmin In this group project, we were tasked to design an expansion for the College of Design on N.C. State’s campus. Our main goal was to create public and private areas exclusively for design students while welcoming the rest of the university to explore the college of design. At the northeast corner of the site is what we deemed as the central point of the design community, where all of the design buildings come together, we wanted the two bars of our building to emphasize this observation so we arranged them to intersect at this central point.

Senior Year Spring Semester : Floating Porch Retreat Published in the October 2013 Cabin Life Magazine The Floating Porch Retreat, located in Pittsboro, North Carolina along the Haw River, is designed for Biology and Genetics major at North Carolina State University. She wanted a space to get away from her studies and relax, wanting to spend time with a large group of her friends and to take advantage of the access to the water that surrounds the site. The client wanted the outdoor spaces to be connected with the surrounding nature, as well as spaces for cooking, playing board games, watching movies, and access to the water for canoeing and kayaking.

Senior Year Spring Semester : Alabama Hero Home Group Partners: Michelle Peltier and Brian Gaudio The Fusion House is located in Greensboro, Alabama. It is a modest and affordable home that will be constructed by volunteer labor for Hale Empowerment and Revitalization Inc. (HERO) The main focus of this project was to create a home that would be easy to construct for the volunteer labor and make an efficient use of spaces. The versatility of the structure allows the owner to customize their home and make it their own. Creating a house that is traditional with modern influences creates a sense of comfort for the occupants while still adding design to their everyday lives.

Senior Year Fall Semester : Žižkov Train Station Group partner : Michelle Peltier While studying abroad in Prague, we were assigned an abandoned train station that was used for transporting cargo, located in Prague 3. Focusing mostly on the analysis portion of the assignment, we were able to understand what the site needed and how it was able to fit within the surrounding context, learning the role of urban design.

Secondary Circulation

Through a thorough analysis of the site, the design was created in phases from start to finish of the construction period. All while incorporating our four goals: a place for the people, connectivity to the city, destination for the city and the site, and to remain environmentally conscious throughout the design.

Internship: Waterline Physical Model This physical model was created for the owner of the residence, in order for them to understand the final design of their future home in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. At 3/8 = 1’ scale, the model is able to show a significant amount of detail, especially in the choices of materials.

Sophomore Year Spring Semester : Charleston Analysis Group partners : Michelle Peltier and Jeremy Swecker In this group project we began by analyzing the Charleston peninsula individually taking into account the armatures of landform, texture, and passage. After analyzing our individual maps of the city we translated them into model form where we emphasized the historical aspect of Charleston through layers of time. While visiting the city of Charleston our group was assigned the historical homes precinct. After analyzing this section of Charleston, we created a precinct model that highlighted the importance of the Charleston single house, specifically the porch as a connector of the private and public layers of the district.
