THE MAIN EVENT HALLOWEEN [EVERYWHERE]

The convict nation know how to get their freak on and this weekend is the perfect excuse, because it’s Halloween. Well, close enough anyway. Although it falls on a Monday, the trick or treating will begin this Friday. They do things much bigger in Oz, after all. Bars across the country will be encouraging you to dress up (vampires are hot right now), dress down (naughty nurses always welcome) and cover yourself in blood (fake preferably). If you’re in Sydney, catch the Oz Party Halloween cruise on Friday, see ozpartybus.com FREE

Score a cheap harbour cruise with the Manly ferry

Sydney settlers Planning to bed down in Sydney for a month or three, but unsure where to empty out your backpack? Here’s the lowdown... WORDS ALEX HARMON

So you’ve decided to settle in Sydney? Well done, you have made a fantastic choice. You’ve picked a home that was recently voted best city in the world by readers of a luxury travel magazine. That’s right, Sydney is even more livable than the fashionable cities of Paris, New York and London. But don’t take these hoighty-toighty readers of expensive glossy magazines word for it. Take it from us trusted, Sydney-based TNT-ers. The Harbour City is not only a great place to live and work, it’s also a great place to explore. It’s forever changing and reinventing itself and trying new things. It’s more experimental and forward-thinking than a philosophy student on acid. Furthermore, you’ve chosen a great time of year to arrive. The city is starting to warm up and come alive again after resting its bones over winter. Whether it’s abstract art springing up in a laneway, or a new film festival, or the island in the harbour dedicated to good food and cocktails (Cockatoo Island – check it out) there is always something new and exciting to do. These festivals all lead up to 8

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

New Year’s Eve and Sydney is the party capital of Australia (if not the world) when it comes to bringing in the new year. The choices range from celebrating by the harbour and watching the fireworks erupt over the bridge, dancing at Bondi Beach on the sand and throwing yourself in the ocean, or simply rounding up some mates together on a rooftop terrace or a picnic rug. There are just so many options for that 10 second countdown to the stroke of midnight. Bringing in the new year in the balmy Sydney weather is something that you’ll remember forever. Well, actually, I can’t guarantee that you’ll remember all of it. The thing about Sydney is that she’s a bit of a wild girl. People praise Melbourne for its culture and cosmopolitan lifestyle, while Sydney gets criticised for being a bit of a hedonistic city, a superficial place that is only interested in having a good time. But personally I’ve never seen anyone complain. A famous Aussie band from Sydney, The Whitlams, once sang, “you gotta love this city, for its body and not its brains”. Take that advice on board

and enjoy your fling with Sydney. If you’re only here for a few months, there’s no need to get serious is there? The biggest complication with Sydney is deciding where to live. The city has something of a personality disorder and can change from zone to zone. First of all you have to decide whether you want to live by the beach. If yes, then you have to decide on how isolated you want to be from the city. You’ve got the purer barefoot beach culture of the north or the Havianafooted scene in the east. Or do you prefer to be amongst Sydney’s trendy café and bar scene? Again that depends on where you lay on the boho (innerwest) to metro (inner-city) spectrum. Also, as appealing as it may sound living in the heart of the city, you will have to swap some cultural perks for convenient travel. And no matter what you do, don’t be lured in by the cheap rents of the western suburbs. I’m telling you now, you’ll regret it. I don’t care how much you like fast food. It seems very complicated, but if you follow our guide to Sydney’s A-list, you’ll have no problem finding your Sydney suburb soulmate.

Nights out in Kings Cross normally become a blur

Colin Firth Station

GLEBE IS...

CENTRAL IS...

SIENNA MILLER

COLIN FIRTH

THE VIBE: Quirky, bohemian and hippy chic (well, it smells of incense sticks anyway). The main thoroughfare, Glebe Point Road, is a smorgasbord of Fairtrade cafés, lesbian bookstores and healing centres. From Mexican, to Spanish, Indian to Vietnamese, this is the best place for budget eating too. It has the best of both worlds by straddling the city and the inner-west so you’re never very far from anything. WHY LIVE HERE? Are you saying “mirror mirror on the wall, who has the most fair-trade coffee beans of them all?” Then living here will satisfy your inner Yogi. This suburb is so close to the city but still has that inner-city alternative lifestyle, great eating and fairly cheap rents. WHERE IS IT? A quick stroll from Central Station.

THE VIBE: Not the coolest place in Sydney but definitely the most reliable. This leading man will do a good job at getting you anywhere. It may look like it’s from an 1800s period piece but there’s more to this compact, orderly spot. The place swarms with internet cafés, travel centres, hostels and pubs, Plus if you look hard enough you’ll find some hidden bars that are absolute gems. And Chinatown is only 10 minutes away. WHY LIVE HERE? Its unrivalled convenience. You can pretty much get anywhere in Australia from here, by bus or train. WHERE IS IT? Really?

PADDINGTON IS...

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY THE VIBE: An attractive, upper-class suburb at the top of Oxford Street. As most would say, the posh end of the street. This is Sydney’s answer to Chelsea. Things to do here include celebrity spotting, boutique shopping, juice drinking and real estate/husband hunting. You’ll also find award-winning restaurants, arthouse cinemas and good looking residents jogging in nearby Centennial Park. WHY LIVE HERE? Because you’re looking for a rich doctor to marry or you just enjoy the finer things in life.

KINGS CROSS IS...

KATE MOSS THE VIBE: Enjoys a good party but swings between classy and trashy. “The Cross” is an edgy buffer between the bustle of the city and posh Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay. The area has what you would call “a reputation”, but has cleaned up significantly in the last few years with lines of trendy bars and restaurants to get you lubricated and then hot nightclubs to keep you dancing all night. You will have to share this place with the bums, tramps and ladies of the night but they make up the interesting tapestry of the place. A nice alternative to the pretentious eastern suburbs, because not everyone moves to Australia to get a tan. WHY LIVE HERE? Because you live for the night and refuse to accept the boredom of reality.

MANLY IS...

BONDI JUNCTION IS...

CAMERON DIAZ

JENNIFER ANISTON

THE VIBE: Not everyone here has the same manly, muscly arms, but if you do, they will come in handy for all of the surfing, beach volleyball and big-beer lifting that you’ll be doing in this beachside suburb. The village is full of surfers and bikini babes strutting the mall and heading to one of the three beaches. Nightlife is lively, with clubs and bars close together. Manly can get crowded at weekends, but it is beach culture at its best. WHY LIVE HERE? Manly is a happy alternative to the city, which is only a ferry ride away and it will always feel like you’re on holiday. There are always people around and if you’re into water sports (stop that), you’ll certainly be happy here, though it does take a bit of time to get to and from the city. Manly also offers more of a chance to mix with locals.

THE VIBE: It lives in the shadow of Bondi Beach, but it still has its own charm. No beach pitt (gettit?) but it does have all those things you love to do as a single gal – great shopping, restaurants and bars where you can meet fellow travellers and single-minded people. The huge Westfield shopping centre sits in the centre and at the very top provides amazing views of Sydney Harbour and city. WHY LIVE HERE? Can’t decide between the city and the beach? Junction is cheaper than Bondi and only a short bus ride away. Plus it has a train station, something Bondi Beach locals object to.

PYRMONT IS...

ASHTON KUTCHER THE VIBE: In the past it’s been tied down to an old industrial port, but it recently had something of a reinvigorated change. The nearby Star City Casino and Darling Harbour mean that fun, thrills and sin are never far away. Plus reliable pubs for the sports fans and solid mid-week drinkers. The 24-hour Pyrmont Bridge Hotel means that you can go for a tipple at any time of the night and there are lots of cafés for that hearty hangover fry-up. WHY LIVE HERE? It doesn’t have the sheen effect but it still has some promising glimmers of hope and it’s very close to the city.

10

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

COOGEE IS...

WAYNE ROONEY THE VIBE: A little piece of Britannia that got lucky. We don’t know why there are so many Brits (and Irish) in Coogee, but they give this place a mixed reputation. Lots of fun to be had but none of the chic style of Bondi or any of the other eastern suburbs beaches. But just because it has a little bit of the chav injection, it doesn’t mean you should avoid it. The Coogee Bay Hotel and Beach Palace are great for sinking some booze by the ocean, listening to some live music and getting a cheap feed. On the beach front, get some tasty fish and chips as you watch the Bondi to Coogee beach walkers arrive. The beach is relatively calm and safe from wild surf and the Coogee baths are there for the really uninitiated swimmer. WHY LIVE HERE? Because you love the lifestyle that comes with the beach but you’re not that fussed about surfing.

SURRY HILLS IS...

JOHNNY DEPP THE VIBE: It has the trendy, cosmopolitan and young hipster lifestyle without being wanky. This suburb is the place that never ages and has the best bars, restaurants and shopping in Sydney. Sure it knows it’s cool, but there are some places in Sydney that wear their arrogance well. There are new small bars popping up all the time to keep you short-attention spanned kids amused. Crown Street shopping is a mix of designer boutiques and secondhand gems and nothing mainstream in between. And with a thriving mix of gay, straight and fetish club clubs on Oxford Street, there is literally something for everyone. WHY LIVE HERE? Do you like to eat and drink and play? Surry Hills is the destination of destinations, so if you live here, you never have to leave.

ERSKINEVILLE IS...

BONDI BEACH IS...

ROBERT PATTINSON

PARIS HILTON THE VIBE: This beach suburb has its own beer, the Bondi Blonde, which was endorsed by Miss Hilton herself. Low carb, fun-loving and full of flavour, and that’s just the locals. Bondi will always have a great reputation for being a socialite’s dream but it also has a great community of locals and expats who pride themselves on being “absolute Bondi”. Although some of the tans may be fake, there’s nothing skanky, just shiny happy people going “full steam ahead” on the good ship to Fun Town. WHY LIVE HERE? You’re young, beautiful and bronzed and look great against a beach backdrop. If you don’t already look like this, you’ll die trying to at Bondi beach.

THE VIBE: It kind of lives in the shadows of Newtown, but this leafy little suburb has all the charm and vibe of its bigger sister. It comes alive at twilight (boom) with the Rose Hotel’s streetside beer garden a great place to watch the sun go down over the nearby city. Although you can see the city skyline, it feels like you’re in a cute country town with friendly neighbourhood delis, florists and cafés. Plus cheap Thai and trendy bars that would feel right at home in Newtown. WHY LIVE HERE? Because Newtown has no more room at the inn.

NEWTOWN IS...

Photos: Tourism New South Wales

DREW BARRYMORE THE VIBE: Alternative, androgynous and constantly reinventing itself. From tattoo studios to metal studded fashion and trendy new small bars, Newtown is a community of culture and a lot of students. The suburb that boycotted McDonalds in the 80s still has its renegade hippy vibe, but more recently has had a gentrified makeover. Enticing bars, cocktail joints and restaurants are spread along King Street and Enmore Road along with daydevouring second-hand book stores. Enmore Theatre often hosts pretty big bands and it’s another great suburb for people watching. WHY LIVE HERE? Because it’s the coolest, edgiest and most free-loving place in Sydney. There’s a huge student crowd so the atmosphere is fairly young and loud. Rent might not be cheap but eating out certainly is. It has some of Sydney’s best pubs and the Marlborough Hotel, or “Marly Bar” as the locals call it, is always crowded (we recommend the Coopers and the Bank too). The suburbs of Enmore and Marrickville are on its doorstep and offer a quieter alternative to the king of alternative. WHERE IS IT? Almost like a student town with Sydney University right in the middle, Newtown is part of the inner west and like Glebe, sits on the outskirts of the city. Newtown Station provides good transport options. Buses in the 420s start from Circular Quay and take you through the city to Newtown. And although most Newtown residents avoid the beach, you can get the 370 bus direct to Coogee.

NEXT WEEK Crowd pleasers Australia’s best music festivals

THE THREE MUSKETEERS (3D) FILM review by Andrew Westbrook STARRING: Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom | CERT: M | RT: 102mins

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS FILM STARRING: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams PG | 94mins

It’s been a long time since Woody Allen made a truly great film, but even the cult director’s sub-par efforts such as Vicky Cristina Barcelona, are enjoyable explorations of the awkwardness and neuroses inherent in love. His latest, Midnight in Paris, depicts a couple forced to face up to the shortcomings of their relationship in the city of light and love.

This suprisingly faithful retelling of the much-loved Alexandre Dumas novel might fall short in the script and plot departments, but its swashbuckling stunts, bursting bodices and dastardly villains all somehow combine to actually make it a pretty fun film, albeit in a guilty pleasure kind of way. The story centres around the young D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman) as he makes his way to Paris, dreaming of following in the footsteps of his father (Dexter Fletcher) by becoming a musketeer. And indeed, soon enough, D’Artagnan finds himself alongside the now washed-up and disenchanted musketeers (played by Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson), as they try to prevent a plot by Cardinal Richelieu to seize power in France. What’s clear is that much effort has been made to cash in on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, with the introduction of canon-laden flying ships and, of course, Orlando Bloom, who plays the musketeers’ English rival, the Duke of Buckingham. Luckily, while the visually great stunts are up to scratch, and the 3D is equally pointless, the Musketeers makers mercifully kept the film under two hours. Like so often, it is the supporting cast that provide the most laughs and intrigue, despite many of them merely reenacting what they are most famous for. Hence Milla Jovovich plays sexy, high-kicking Milady, Christoph Waltz the crafty, evil Richelieu and former Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen plays top henchman Rocheford. There’s even James Cordon as the comic relief servant, basically Smithy. GOOD FOR: A couple of hours of old-fashioned pantomime fun. Leave your brain at home

COLDPLAY MYLO XYLOTO (CAPITOL)

BOOK IT

NOW!

NEW ALBUM

Chris Martin describes this album as “a love story with a happy ending” between two protagonists, Mylo and Xyloto. The record is inspired by old school American graffitti and this time it is all about the lyrics. The sound is Coldplay’s usual stripped down, mellow style, with Martin’s soaring cathedrallike refrains. Coldplay is all about a feeling, an echo of a memory you can’t quite place and there is plenty of that old feeling in the first few tracks. Listeners will notice the difference from previous albums on the song “Princess of China”, where the band are joined by pop princess Rhianna for a funky synthesised journey into the climax of the story. Chris Martin once said that bands shouldn’t continue past the age of 33. When he passed that age, he said what he meant was that they should “proceed as if it was their last”. Mylo Xyloto doesn’t feel like it should be the end for the alternate rockers.

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE NEW TOUR

The second album from Florence and the Machine is due out at the end of the month, so it is pretty exciting to announce that the band will debut the album, Ceremonials, in Sydney. Tickets go on sale on November 8, at 9am. Don’t miss out. $41.25, Seymour Centre Sydney mastercard.com.au

True to his roots The former UB40 frontman talks about why the band split up, why he loves reggae and the health benefits of drinking... INTERVIEW ALEX HARMON

Ali Campbell seems to get better with age. I hate to say it but he matures like a bottle of fine red wine. With a career in music that spans over 30 years and over 70 million records sold with UB40 alone, Campbell has proved to the world that white men really can make reggae music. "I was born in the 60s and all of my friends were Jamaican or West Indian in the area I lived, so the music of the streets was reggae," Campbell explains. "It was a time when rocksteady was becoming reggae and when I was 10 years old, I bought African Herbsman by Bob Marley and the Wailers and that was my greatest possession. I was wandering around with that in my arms, I wasn’t a normal kid." This abnormal upbringing in the south of Birmingham, the "wrong side of the tracks" as he points out, introduced Campbell to these musical roots. It's this passion for reggae that lives on in his music today. And not just his own, he feels reggae has helped shape music for the past 50 years. "All of your contemporary pop music is influenced by dub and all of the music that comes from dub originates from reggae really. Like rap, which comes from coasting, which comes from reggae. You know it’s ridiculous, it is the most influential music at the moment, just listen to J-Lo." With UB40, Campbell notched up more than 50 chart hits, including "Red, Red Wine", "I Got You Babe" and "Kingston Town". Now with a successful solo career he is bringing his new band, the Dep Band, Down Under where he promises to play a mix of his old covers and promote his new album – "which is again, an album of covers! It’s kind of synonymous to reggae music, covering other people’s stuff. And the new album has covers of the Beatles, The Who, The Stones, The Kinks. Basically I will be performing a show of hits." It's these hits that he would like to be remembered by, but unfortunately, the messy split with UB40 in 2008 still creeps up into the headlines. It was just last week that a judge declared four members of the original band bankrupt. Campbell, who made the bold choice to jump ship, saved himself from this demise. He calls the split "acrimonious" but with hindsight comes a sense of smugness. "It's not like I didn’t tell them. I was saying that I wasn’t happy with the way the band was being managed. Well, I was right." It's this integrity and razor-sharp instinct that makes Campbell a respected figure in an industry so focused on money. "I’ve just been getting on with it and doing what I’m doing and that is promoting reggae and promoting dub." 18

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

Which is exactly what he'll be doing when he hits Australian shores for the umpteenth time, "I have been coming there for nearly 30 years. I’ve watched the place grow. I love Australia."

It's not like I didn't tell them [UB40]. Well, I was right

And does he still love red wine? "I do very much. What red wine does is it loosens the platelets in the back of your arteries. So as long as you don’t drink in excess and you have a couple of glasses of good Rioja or something like that, two of them every day, then you won’t have a heart attack." ❚ Ali Campbell will be touring Oz with Billy Ocean. Li-Lo in court, or is that a coal mine?

LINDSAY ONLY DOES REWARDING CHARITY

[USA]

You know they just don’t make community service as fulfilling as they used to. That’s what Lindsay Lohan thinks anyway. Failing to complete her 360 hours of service at a women’s centre for stealing a necklace, she wound up back in court. You see, poor old Lindsay was having some problems with attendance at the women’s centre and she told the judge this was because it was “not fulfilling”. This pissed the judge right off and now Lindsay has been ordered to finish her hours at a morgue. Isn’t that the most thankless work you can do with people? Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Linds.

KATE FINDS LOVE IN THE ASHES

[ENGLAND]

They say you’ll meet someone when you least expect it, which I’ve always thought was bollocks. Or sexual assault. But Kate Winslet seems to be the exception to the rule. She met her latest boyfriend, Ned Rocknroll, when she was saving Richard Branson’s 90-year-old mother from a burning mansion on a Caribbean island. Ned is Richard Branson’s nephew and he was there amongst all the commotion. As the oxygen masks came on, they looked at each other from across the smoke and it was love at first sight. No one seems to mind that they were both hooked up at the time. Nor that this douche changed his surname to “Rocknroll”. So not cool.

He does not approve of his daughters watching the antics of the K-clan. Wife Michelle said in a recent interview that Barack, “doesn’t like it that much”, when they watch it. But she has a different approach. “I sort of feel like if we’re talking about it, and I’m more concerned with how they take it in. What did you learn when you watched that? And if they’re learning the right lessons, like, that was crazy, then I’m like, ‘Okay’”, she said. So basically Malia and Sasha can watch it, as long as they come away and say, “dem bitches be wack.” Everybody wins.

Christina Hendricks, who plays Mad Men’s curvaceous secretary, oh who are we kidding, she plays the office boob-monster, has been immortalized in the new Need For Speed: The Run video game. But it’s not the result pubescent boys were hoping for. The computer version of Christina has been covered up and down-sized, making her look flat-chested and manly. What’s the point? Gillian Anderson must’ve been busy.

DRUG GANG PUT A HIT ON DOUGLAS FAMILY

[USA]

Celebrity kids always seem to be getting bailed out by their parents. However, Michael Douglas’ son is really pushing the boundaries. I’m not sure that daddy is going to be any match for the Mexican drug ring that currently want his son, and anyone else that gets in their way, dead. Cameron Douglas, 32, is currently in prison for dealing meth but has agreed to sing like a bird against his former drug-dealing mates in order to get his sentence cut in half, down to five years. So that’s only five years of sleepless nights, wondering if dad and step-mom Catherine Zeta Jones have been revenge killed. What a selfish little twat.

DOWNEY AND OUT FOR MEL GIBSON

Robert Downey Jr thinks that the world needs to forgive poor old Mel Gibson. He used his acceptance speech at a Hollywood awards bash to beg the world to change their tainted opinions of the alleged Jew-hating-wife-basher. He said that Mel was the reason he was able to overcome his own addictions and accept responsibility for his wrongdoings. Oh, he also got him some work. “I couldn’t get hired, and he cast me, and he kept a roof over my head and food on my table.” Gee, I bet Oksana wishes she’d had even half the compassion going on in this bromance. Downey went on and on, “I humbly ask that you join me in forgiving my friend his trespasses.” Okay, he put you in a movie, he’s not Jesus. Although this is probably what he told you every night as you broke bread at the Casa Gibson table.

Elizabeth Olsen, the younger and more hipster sister of the Olsen twins, is living the hipster lifestyle too. She refuses to take charity from her sisters and chooses to live in a rough New York City neighbourhood. According to The Enquirer, young Lizzie likes living in her gangster’s paradise, mixing it with drug dealers and tramps. Even though the twins are begging to put her up in a swanky $1 million apartment. She says she is happy in her 300-square foot apartment next to a laundromat in the seedy part of town. I guess she’s just biding her time until one of her indie films pay off. Her lead role in the film Martha Marcy May Marlene is tipped to be an Oscars favourite. And although she lives in squalor, she still manages to look healthier than her malnourished waif-sisters.

Lanie Lane With a smoky, sassy-sounding debut album that has been billed as one of the best Australian newcomers in years, Lanie Lane is an artist you’ll want to keep an eye on INTERVIEW LEIGH LIVINGSTONE

There are a lot of pictures around with you wearing a harmonica around your neck. What is the significance there? I have some harmonicas and I made the necklace. It’s quite a novelty. I really like it because it’s so chunky and different and no one else has one. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing? I would probably be living on a ranch and hanging out with horses. I would be some kind of artistic soul, but I can’t imagine doing anything else really.

Lanie Lane: 50s glamour mixed with cowgirl spirit

Why did you become a singer? I guess sometimes these things aren’t really a decision, it’s more a thing you have to do. I decided that I really wanted to do it as a career about five years ago. I was at a point in my life where I was going to settle down or focus on my career and I made the decision I would have to do that or I would always regret it. What spurred that decision? I was just in a relationship and for me it was that point of do I focus on this part of life or do I focus on being a musician? You’ve had a whirlwind year so far, what’s been the highlight? Obviously I loved working with Jack White and Claire Bowditch, going on tour. I’m enjoying learning and growing and being able to put out my first album. What was Jack White like? Really fun. Someone from management knew someone that worked at his record label and they passed on a few songs from my album and Jack really loved it and invited me over. What is it like playing to a US audience? It’s good; I think their sense of humour is a bit different. It’s just a different kind of people and 24

they seem to really enjoy what I do and my music. I’m really just starting out there. What is your album about? The songs are about different things really. Different experiences I’ve had and different topics, there isn’t just one thing in particular. What’s your fave song from the album? I really love “To The Horses”. That’s a really special song for me; it’s almost like a spiritual song for me. It is just about me, who I am and following my dreams. Having to do what I do without having a choice about it and loving that. I also love the song “That’s What You Get” which is going to be the next single. That is a really fun song, I wrote that quite recently. How would you describe your music? It’s like a mix of blues and early rock and roll, kind of like early Elvis stuff. Style wise there’s a bit of rockabilly. And your fashion style? I’m starting to change a little bit. I’ve always had a lot of different styles coming and going. My fashion sense is “make an effort”. At the moment I think I am channelling this weird mix of cowgirl and Indian and fifties glamour.

When you are travelling the world, what is the one thing you always take with you? I like to take my pillow. I have this really great pillow that is made out of this special fibre, but I left it in New York the other day so I am really pissed off about that. What will you dress up as for Halloween? I was thinking about this the other day and it would be fun to be the front of a horse. Not the back though, you don’t want to be the arse end of a horse. If you pressed shuffle on your iPod right now, what song would come up? A song by a girl called Miss Little, who is coming on tour with me. She has a song called “A Place Without Time”. It’s such a beautiful song and her voice is amazing, every time I hear it I get a bit teary. If you could switch places with anyone in the world for a day, who would it be? It would be fun to be Dolly Parton. I just think she is amazing.

Lanie Lane’s debut album, To The Horses, is out now. She’s currently touring Oz. Gigs include Brisbane (Oct 27), Sydney (Nov 3) & Melbourne (Nov 11 & 12) lanielane.net

CYCLOPS SHARK REAL MEXICO

An albino one-eyed shark foetus has been found in the gulf of California. According to researchers, the shark foetus, cut from the belly of a dusky shark caught earlier this year, is real. Despite previous skepticism that the picture circulating may have been photoshopped. Experts who have examined the find say that the eye had functional optical tissue, but it is unlikely the shark would have survived. Shark boffin Felipe Galvan Magana, of Mexico’s Centro Interdisciplinario de Cienas del Mar, explained that the abnormality is extremely rare. “As far as I know, less than 50 examples of an abnormality like this have been recorded,” he said. The Mexican fisherman who caught the shark is said to be fascinated by it and wants to keep the remains.

ONLY NICE ICE, BABY USA

A ski area in the US state of Arizona, which had hoped to become the latest resort to start using recycled sewer water to make snow, has been met with some opposition from locals. The ski resort has been inundated with complaints from a local Indian tribe who say the frozen sewer water is disrespectful to their sacred mountain. The Hopi tribe told resort owners that the mountain is a holy entity to them and other Indian tribes

who lived in the area centuries before Europeans arrived. The Hopi people believe, “it is up to moisture from the sky to bring in water,” said LeRoy Shingoitewa, a Hopi tribal chairman. “We believe that whatever comes off the mountain is pure. When you take something that is not pure and defile it, it becomes a dirty object. Would you use something in your ceremony that is not clean?” The resort’s owners have struggled in recent years due to Arizona being one of the driest states in the US. The run of dry winters has left operators scrambling to find water to make artificial snow and keep skiers on their slopes. At least two ski resorts in Australia make snow from recycled wastewater.

Queenslanders are confused by a UK article suggesting Fraser Island is infested with crocodiles. UK newspaper The Telegraph recently published a report of the world’s most dangerous beaches and listed Australia’s Fraser Island in first place because, it claimed, the holiday destination is infested with saltwater crocodiles. Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt thinks the misconception may have come from a prank in 2006 where a large styrofoam crocodile was placed on the beach. “As far as I can ascertain, this was based on a story in 2006, that was typical Queensland humour,” she said. “It would be very unusual to see crocodiles south of Gladstone.” The island is popular with families and pictures were released around the world by tourists at the time of the prank. WHEN HARRY MET SOLDADO Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is eyeing up Valencia hitman Roberto Soldado. According to a Spanish radio station, Tottenham Hotspur have began to swoop in on Soldado, so long as they can sell Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko in January. However, Redknapp needs to challenge the Germans to secure the 26-year-old, as Bayern Munich are also keen.

WELBECK’S BIG BUCKS Danny Welbeck has been offered a three-fold pay increase by Man United to secure his future with the club. Alex Ferguson has begun discussions with the 22-year-old striker to boost his wage from £15,000 to around £50,000 a week. Welbeck has stood out as a key player this season after scoring five goals in as many games.

Left outside: Carlos Tevez will not be returning to Boca Juniors as they cannot afford his £250,000 per week wage. The Buenos Aires team were hoping Tevez would either drop his wage demands or that City would subsidise the salary. Neither seem likely.

SHAQIRI MAY BE HAMBURGLED Hamburg are in the lead to secure Xherdan Shaqiri from Basel, edging in front of Tottenham and Arsenal. The 20-year-old winger is prepared for a

bidding war in January, with the Germans rumoured to be putting in a £7 million offer in the new year. His temperament and inconsistent form have made other European clubs hesitant to bank on him in the past.

BEING BOLD Using bright, vibrant colour is a great effect in breaking up a photo and giving it more depth. When you have a colourful image, make the photo bright. If shooting in the sun, choose a low ISO so you don’t blow out any of the high lights or overexpose and lose detail. You can also use fill-in flash, but we always prefer natural light – it gives a flowing feel. Remember to balance and complement colours – sometimes less is more, and concentrating on a few to make more of an impact often creates an image with a ‘wow’ factor. Your aim is to bring a scene to life and, sometimes, having too many colours can confuse and clutter an image. Don’t let one shade dominate unless you want it to be the main focus. Red, yellow, orange and brown are warm colours. Blue is a cool colour. Green and purple are somewhere in-between. Warm colours appear to come forward in a photo, and cool colours to recede. If you place a warm coloured subject against a cooler coloured background, the subject stands out.

YOU ASKED FOR IT... WE ANSWER YOUR TRAVEL QUESTIONS

looking to escape the crowds in Q I’m Perth – can you advise me of a good place to go? Ethan Hines, USA suggest you hitch a ride on a ferry from A We Perth and make your way over to Rottnest Island. When you arrive, grab yourself a bike and ride freely around, due to the fact there aren’t any privately-owned cars on the island. While cruising around, make sure you stop off at one of the 63 beaches for a spot of fishing, swimming, surfing or diving. If one of those still doesn’t tickle your fancy, then head to one of the delicious cafés or restaurants on the island to while away the afternoon. If you fancy yourself a swimmer, in February, Perthians and visitors take part in the “Rotto” swim, a 19km open water race. How do you get there, you ask? Your best bet is with a 25-minute ferry ride from Fremantle or 45 minutes from Hillary’s Boat Harbour. do I find the best diving on the Q Where Great Barrier Reef? Mark Fraser, UK

no shortage of options when it A There’s comes to getting a closer look at Australia’s greatest natural phenomenon. Stretching for over 3,000km up the Queensland coast, the reef begins near the town of Bundaberg and continues up past the tip of Cape York. Boasting over 400 types of coral and 1,500 species of fish, amongst other things, the World Heritage-listed reef varies from being just 15km from shore, up to 150km away, and is at some points a massive 65km wide. Cairns is the undisputed dive capital of Oz, with the reef being nearer than down south and the excellent fringing reefs of Green and Fitzroy Island not being far off. Port Douglas is even nearer the action, but you might pay more for the privilege. If wreck dives are your thing, then look no further than the SS Yongala, just off Townsville. Other hotspots include the Whitsundays’ Hook Island and Cod Hole on Lizard Island. But don’t dismiss the southern rivals, like Bundaberg. The nearby Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave are fantastic, especially for turtles.

SO, WHAT DID YOU DO TODAY? I went on a tour to the Frankland Islands, in Queensland. I went snorkelling and saw some really big turtles, it was amazing. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO COME TO OZ? When I was young I watched a movie called Ocean Girl. It’s about a girl that lives on an island on the Great Barrier Reef. The scenery just fascinated me. WHAT‘S BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE DAY? Snorkelling and diving with the turtles. They were so close and they didn’t swim away, it seemed like they enjoyed watching me. WHO’S THE WEIRDEST PERSON YOU’VE MET? A hippie guy in Nimbin. I went on a day tour there. He lives in a small house in the middle of the jungle and he had weird things in his house, like a dead animal hanging from the ceiling. ANY TIPS FOR A NEW ARRIVAL IN OZ? TRAVELLERSTALE A FEAST OF FRASER

NICKY UNDERWOOD could have created her own crime-solving TV show while on Fraser Island... We began our journey from Rainbow Beach to Fraser Island bright and early, and what a journey it was. Smoothly, we began to roam across the sand beast, only for trouble to start. The car behind us broke down completely, causing an unexpected pit stop in the middle of the bush. Refusing to start, the passengers had to sit and wait it out for a mechanic whilst the rest of us were shown to our first lake of the island. After a couple of hours in the sun, we were a) wondering where the broken down group had got to and b) hungry. The waiting and hunger was clearly troubling us and so we created art in the sand to distract us, beginning with a sand BBQ, joined by a mini Stonehenge, a heart, a castle and a fort to protect the BBQ rounded off with a dead fish placed on the grill and voila... we had our very own Salvador Dali. Eventually we left the lake to set up camp just next to the beach (but

obviously still on the sand). I jumped out of the car, leaving my handbag on the seat. I didn’t need it to set up tents. So tents all put up, I returned to reunite with my bag and it had gone! Trouble had reared its ugly head again. Don’t panic, don’t panic. Okay, it’s dark and things have moved, just grab a torch and have a look around. After looking for what felt like forever, I jumped out of the car again and, “Hello Mr Dingo”. Run! Everyone’s shouting “Dingo” at me. “Why do you think I’m running?!”, I shouted back. Luckily he wasn’t too interested in my lack of food. I shared my bag-missing woes with the group but no one had seen it. Everyone advised to wait till morning for light. The next morning I’m the only one on the camp awoken by sunrise – hunt for bag time. Nope, it’s not here. No one has taken it by mistake and dingoes wouldn’t have been bothered about it. So whilst everyone is at the creek, our guide drove me and (trouble again) a guy who had cut his thumb open

to the ambulance station. They fixed him up and he fainted. Whilst they’re helping him, I’m phoning the police to cancel my bank cards. All done and time to try and not worry how I’m going to make it up to Cairns without any money, phone or ID. Solemnly, I get back in the car for the bumpiest journey of my life with (appropriately) Incubus’ ‘Drive’ cranked to full volume. A very long, bouncy journey across the beach returned us to camp. After dinner, one of our group was in the tent and had felt something hard underneath it. “Nicky! Quick, come here.” I ran faster than ever before. “Is this your bag under the tent?” Please don’t joke. Lo and behold she reaches under the tent and there, buried snugly in the sand, is my bag. It had attached itself to a tent bag in the car and someone had pitched a tent on top of it. The irony being that this was the last tent available and the tent I was invited to sleep in. I had been sleeping on my bag the whole time. Troubles over for now and I began to enjoy the rest of my time on Fraser. Despite the drama and the following weeks of endless sand in my bag, my trip to Fraser was incredible and I would do it all over again given the chance.

I’m staring bright-eyed at a school of frenzied fish devouring a lump of tuna, when suddenly, SMACK, the cage I’m in is rocked to the side. I’m in the chilly Southern Ocean waters off the Neptune Islands, by Port Lincoln, a place famous for two things above all else – some of the world’s tastiest tuna and some of that tunas’ biggest fans, great white sharks. It’s for good reason that Steven Spielberg chose these South Australian waters to film the real sharks in Jaws. It just happens to be a favourite holiday destination for the world’s biggest predatory fish. But more on that later, as the cage diving experience is the grand finale to my six-day tour of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, a region, it’s fair to say, which is not on the usual backpacker trail. Nestled between the Great Australian Bight to the west, the Spencer Gulf to the east and the Gawler Ranges to the north, the Eyre is a vast area that boasts some of Australia’s cutest, scariest and most downright surreal animal experiences. Which is why I’m there. I’m on a mission to do them all. Starting with a bleary-eyed pickup in the early hours of an Adelaide morning, the operation had begun with a drive a couple of hundred clicks north to the Flinders Ranges. While there’s no time on this trip to make it as far north as the region’s pin-up star Wilpena Pound, even the southern Flinders are a geological wonder it’s hard not to stare at in awe. Six hundred million years or so of erosion has meant the mountains no longer soar as far beyond the clouds as they once did, but there’s no doubting the majesty of a range 10 times older (and once higher) than the Himalayas. Seasonal wild flowers adorn every rising hill, adding psychedelic waves of colour to the craggy contours, combining an ancient unspoken authority with temporary beauty. A bit like if Clint Eastwood was given the Trinny and Susannah treatment.

We spend our time walking amongst the canyons, spotting the rare yellow-footed rock wallabies, which are common in the area, plus a variety of crazy-looking and crazy-named lizards, like the shingleback skink or painted dragon. We’re told to be wary of the brown and tiger snakes that are abundant – “you absolutely will be within a metre of one of the world’s most dangerous snakes on this trip, even if you don’t know it,” assures tour guide Simmo. That makes us nervous. But gagging to see one. No such luck. That night we camp out around the fire, in swags under the stars, which is something I absolutely love. Forget diving the reef or climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A swag, some good people and the Milky Way for a roof is all you need for the ultimate Aussie experience. The next day we move on to Coodlie Park, a farm retreat that is to be our base for a couple of nights. And it’s a good thing we’ve got a base, as it’s time to start the mission in earnest, courtesy of the ‘Suicide Three’. This tempting-sounding trio is a full-on day that leaves our adrenal glands aching as much as our muscles. It starts with something I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time – swimming with sea lions at Baird Bay. While I’ve been lucky enough to swim with dolphins in half a dozen different places, sea lions, I’ve been told time and time again, are the coolest cats when it comes to some underwater interaction. So in we jump to the bay’s undeniably icy waters, treading water in a natural pool by the nearby sea lion colony. And luckily, due to some serious shivering, we don’t have to wait long. Just as I’m pondering the symptoms of pneumonia, our first playmate speeds inquisitively through the perfectly-clear waters towards us. The cold suddenly out of our minds (well, almost), the forerunner is soon joined by his buddies. They swim under and around us, spinning and swiveling, twisting and turning. It really is incredible. With their gentle faces and big, friendly eyes, they genuinely seem to want to play with us (or at least laugh about how rubbish we are in the water), hanging around for much longer and coming much closer than dolphins generally do. At one point, something grey and much bigger darts TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

sanctuary meets campground. There’s more wild koalas than I’ve ever seen, while the site is also home to 3m high yakka grass trees. Now, they may not sound too exciting, but that size means they’re around 450 years old. Plus, they look super-cool. They’re worth checking out. Really. That night we’re back in swags, falling asleep to the sounds of horny koalas in the trees around us. It’s finally time for Port Lincoln, but the sharks, however, must wait just a little bit longer. First I need to get in character and meet their bait – bluefin tuna. Port Lincoln is first and foremost a tuna town. Indeed, the main reason why it boasts more millionaires per capita than anywhere else in Australia is that the tuna is damn good, with most of it heading straight to Japan’s sashimi markets. So, it’s perhaps not surprising that not so long ago somebody thought up one of the stranger wildlife experiences Down Under, swimming with tuna. Wetsuited up again, this time we find ourselves in a pen floating out at sea. The tuna, incidentally far bigger than I had realised, are everywhere. They also have sharplooking teeth and can move at a nifty 70km/hr, which is just a little bit quicker than us. One helpful soul chucks a handful of pilchards in my direction, with the result that I’m surrounded by hungry missiles firing in every direction seemingly at the speed of light. One fellow swimmer, apparently with a pilchard-looking finger, cops a papercutlike slice to the hand. It’s a surreal experience and is strangely unnerving, despite there essentially being no chance of getting hurt (papercuts aside). I leave with a new-found respect for the bluefin and a feeling that I’ve earned my next tuna sandwich.

in front of me. My heart skips a beat until I realise it’s a bottlenose dolphin. Two in fact. They’re clearly not wanting to miss out on the fun. However, while the privilege of seeing and swimming with dolphins in the water will never get tired, they’re no match in the personality stakes for the sea lions, who, like the perfect party host, seem determined to make sure we never get bored while in their neck of the woods. When the party does finally end, we’ve just got time for a quick barbie before it’s back into the water, this time for a surfing lesson. After a few pointers on trying to master “the snap”, we’re released into the blue room for our chance to try and hang 10. Cue several near drownings, an arm straining workout and some brilliantly glorious, if very brief, moments actually stood up. Despite my muscles screaming for mercy, I’m immediately hooked, always wanting one more go. But soon our time is up and I begin to regret my eagerness in the water as we head to the final leg of the Suicide Three – sandboarding. Turning a corner, it’s as though the South Australian landscape is transformed into the Sahara and we’re met by a series of soaring sand dunes. We’re soon clambering up the sand, boards under our arms, only to fling ourselves back down screaming our heads off. It’s a lot of fun, but the walk back is a killer, and coming straight after surfing we can only manage a few goes each before slumping back into the dunes to just catch our breath and admire the sandswept panorama. The next morning we hit the road again, heading on to check out the area’s spectacular coastline, all the while edging closer to Port Lincoln’s sharks. For my final night we stay at Mikkara, a sort of koala

There’s now nothing between me and my cage. Up at dawn, we spend a few hours heading around the coast to the Neptune Islands. With a giant splash, the metal cage is dropped off the back of the boat along with a couple of tuna carcasses, and then the waiting game begins. It’s barely half an hour before the first, “shaaaark!” yell goes out and we all scamper to the side. It’s a big one. Four, maybe five metres long. Seeing such a massive predator circling the boat, its fin carving through the water, is intimidating to say the least. With that sighting goes out the call for cage volunteers. I hang back. I’d been tipped off that the later you go, the more likely you are to see more sharks, so I let the tension mount. The hours pass. Sharks come and go, worried faces Andrew Westbrook travelled with Nullarbor Traveller. The six-day Secrets of Eyre Peninsula tour costs from $840, including surf lesson and tuna swim thetraveller.net.au. The sea lion and dolphin swim with Baird Bay Charters is $140 bairdbay.com. get into cages and grinning, slightly demented, ones get out. Finally, it’s my turn. I’m the first of my group of four to take the plunge and find myself at the front of a cage with a worrying large gap (apparently, if a shark does get its nose inside, it can’t open its mouth...). For the next 45 adrenalin-pumping minutes, I’m glued to the spot, starstruck. I’ve no idea how many giant sharks I see, perhaps three (they kinda look the same), but I see them a lot. And oh so close. But the strange thing is that’s it’s in no way scary, just truly magnificent. Watching these giant killers feeding in their natural habitat, while looking you in the eye, is quite simply something I’ll never forget. Needless to say, I was the last out of the cage, demented grin firmly in place. ❚

Making tracks Climb on board the Trans-Siberian railway for an epic train journey that’s on every do-before-you-die list WORDS AMY ADAMS

The Trans-Siberian railway has come to mean much more than the train journey across Russia it originally described. So it might be it’s now a catch-all for any train journey a bunk in a four-berth compartment and in this area – in fact, most travellers doing the chances of you getting champagne on the ‘Trans-Sib’ will usually be heading from WHEN TO GO: You can go departure are slim (though I’d like to see Beijing to Mongolia, then through Siberia all year round so choose your you ask the provodnitsa), but nothing beats to Moscow (or vice versa) – officially, the departure date according to what being lulled to sleep by the gentle rock Trans-Mongolian. OFF THE RAILS MUST DO STOPS ALONG THE WAY MOSCOW, RUSSIA Start or finish your Trans-Siberian journey with a trip to the Red Square for St Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s mausoleum and the nearby Kremlin. By night, see ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre, or splash some cash in the city’s top nightclubs.

YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA

St Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow samovar your best friend. You’re more likely to share your carriage with locals, rather than other tourists, at this time of year so pack a Russian phrasebook.

REFRESH AND REFUEL Given the lengthy journeys, it’s good to get some fresh air and stretch your legs when the train comes into a station. It’s also a good time to top up dwindling food supplies – local vendors meet the train armed with homemade dumplings and giant pans of borsch. The train won’t stand in the station a second longer than scheduled, though, so don’t stray too far, and always take your money belt.

STRANGERS ON A TRAIN Unlike on Sydney’s trains, chatting to fellow passengers on the Trans-Siberian is part of the experience. I shall always be grateful to Lena – her fur coat might have taken up half our cabin, but she schooled me in train etiquette in no time. And there’s nothing like staring out of a window together to make secrets bubble to the surface. Mikhail, eyes fixed on the passing forest, confesses that he could never love again after the woman he gave his heart to married another.

THE VIEWS Much of the journey between Moscow and Irkutsk is an endless blur of coniferous forest known as taiga. But approaching this city (or leaving it if you’re heading west to east), you get treated to views of Lake Baikal, icy white or shimmering blue, depending on the season. Through Mongolia to Beijing, steppe then (Gobi) desert stretches far into the distance, the sand eventually giving way to paddy fields and small villages until – the icing on the cake – a glimpse of the Great Wall of China.

The Trans-Siberian crosses five time zones (seven if you’re going to Vladivostok), but the trains in Russia run on Moscow Time. Combine this confusion with the fact that journeys can be several days in length and it’s best to forget about time entirely and adjust your watch on arrival. ❚ 46

TNTDOWNUNDER.COM

IRKUTSK, RUSSIA Jump off for the ‘Pearl of Siberia’ Lake Baikal. The small town of Listvyanka is a good base, on the shores of the world’s deepest lake. You’ll have a very different experience of Baikal depending on when you visit – taking a dip in crystal clear waters in summer, or snowmobiling on two-metre thick ice in winter or finish your Trans-Siberian journey with a trip to the Red Square.

ULAN UDE, RUSSIA The capital of Buryatia is a good stop for exploring the main religion of this autonomous republic: Tibetan Buddhism. Monasteries and temples dot the stark landscape, including the centre of Buddhism in Russia, Ivolginsky Datsan, a complex of temples and prayer wheels with colourful flags hanging from the trees, and a pen for the sacred roe deer.

ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA With Soviet buildings towering over felt tents (gers) and fashionable teens jostling elderly men in traditional dress, the capital of Mongolia is an intriguing city. But its main attraction is its proximity to the Terelj National Park. Make like Ghenghis Khan and go riding over the vast Mongolian steppe, before bedding down in a traditional ger.

BEIJING, CHINA In the wake of the 2008 Olympics, Beijing might be more sleek and modern, but the city’s charms lie with its ancient history. Head over Tiananmen Square to the Forbidden City before cycling through the rapidly disappearing hutong (narrow alleyways). Egypt: From the Red Don’t leave without Sea to the Pyramids taking a trip out of town to walk on a certain big wall.

TIMELESS QUALITY

Go hiking, ice fishing or dog sledding in the nearby Ural Mountains, stopping for a photo at the border between Europe and Asia. Yekaterinburg is also famous for its bloody history, home to the Romonov royal family assassination, one of Stalin’s Gulags (concentration camps) and a graveyard dominated by towering monuments to fallen mafiosa, testament to the city’s once-rampant mob culture.

CLIMBING THE SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE Climbs from $188. Sure, there’s no denying this is an expensive experience (especially once you throw in the photos sting), but if you can spare the cash, this is one biggy we’d recommend splashing out for. Clambering up the bare metal of the bridge for an unparalleled view of the harbour is something you’re unlikely to forget. Also, imagine how many tourists’ photos you’ll be in. bridgeclimb.com

CAIRNS? SURFING THE GOLD COAST You can’t claim to have experienced Australia until you’ve had a go at the national obsession, surfing. And where else to try it but at Surfers Paradise. Well actually, if you’re half-decent on a board, Surfers is one of the worse places on the GC to look for waves – instead try South Straddie, Snapper Rocks or Burleigh Heads. However, if it’s your first go, then Surfers is, well, paradise.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

KAYAKING KATHERINE GORGE Sure, you can empty your wallet for a scenic helicopter flight, or you can join the masses of silver nomads on a boat cruise (especially when the Ghan train is in town), but the best way to really get a croc’s eye feel for the spectacular gorges of Nitmiluk National Park is to jump in a kayak and go for a paddle. It’s also the cheapest way to see them. Double score! Just be careful where you swim.

THE PINNACLES Nambung National Park. Entry $11. Just a couple of hours north of Perth, often making them the first stop on a west coast roadtrip, the Pinnacles are a surreal collection of hundreds of ancient limestone pillars rising out of the yellow sand. They’re at their most eerie at sunset, or better yet, sunrise, when you’re more likely to avoid the tour groups and have the place to yourself.

MILFORD SOUND One of the most beautiful places in New Zealand (where there’s some serious competition), Milford Sound is most definitely worth the mission to the country’s south-west. Indeed the drive there is as spectacular as the destination – all winding roads, gaping drops, dense woodland and crashing waterfalls. Once there, head out onto the water and keep your eyes peeled for seals and penguins.

STUDY IN OZ • You must pay your tuition fees

Seeking more students, Australia has made it easier for you to study, play and stay... Many people who visit Australia on a working holiday visa normally find themselves so addicted to the place they want to hang around for more, maybe even for good. There are several avenues you can take to stay in Australia, one of which is studying. International students in Australia are in luck because just last month the federal government announced a bunch of changes that has streamlined the visa application process, making it easier to obtain and even easier to stay after you finish studying. Under the changes, foreign

graduates who undertake a bachelor degree will be able to stay and work for up to two years after they finish, without any restriction on the type of job – even in unrelated fields. So you can swap your law degree for lawn mowing if you really want to. Furthermore, you will no longer have to prove you have $75,000 in your bank account, but simply declare that you have the means to support yourself while you’re here. With shorter processing times, relaxed rules and more freedom, there really is no better time to hit the books.

up-front

• You can work up to 20 hours

per week during term time and full time during holidays

• You have multiple entries in

and out of Oz for the duration of your visa

• If you want to live on campus, enroll early as places fill up

• You must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) which you must buy before you arrive in Oz • Your spouse or de-facto

partner (including same sex couples) can apply for a visa to accompany you while you study in Oz

If attacked by a saltwater crocodile, should you run away in a zig-zag? If anything, running in a zig-zag would give the croc a better chance of getting his gnashers around you as it would slow you down. No doubt it’s a believable theory, but crocs are all about the surprise ambush. They attack in one rapid and powerful lunge. If they don’t get you with that, they’re unlikely to stay interested (if you’re on land that is). Most crocs can run, but nowhere near as fast as a reasonably fit person. Plus, they have very little stamina so they will be knackered after about 30 metres.
