URBAN DESIGN
Schuylkill River Competition: AMTRAK’s main corridor through Philadelphia lies just outside Center City, on the Western bank of the Schuylkill River. Wrapping around the station and hugging the Western bank of the River, Interstate 76 provides the city with one of its most heavily used entries and exits for passenger vehicles. The goal was to connect the people of Philadelphia to the waterfront by creating an alternative route for the highway.
T PHILADELPHIA: A PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY SCHUYLKIL Solution: Deck over railway and bury Interstate to provide open access to waterfront by foot. Convert AMTRAK bridge into pedestrian bridge connecting Center City with West Philadelphia. New AMTRAK connection goes under Schuylkill River.

11th Street Bridge
Location: Washington D.C.
Project Overview: two bridges built in the 1960s are being replaced with three new bridges that will separate local and freeway traffic. The existing 11th Street Bridge has potential to become a Recreation/Pedestrian Bridge linking river trails and recreation amenities. This is a great site to connect communities in Ward 6 with communities in Ward 8 by providing performance/public space, art displays, environmental education, or adventure recreation.

Solution: On the ground a multi-purpose deck connects with the bridge both by ramp and through the building. This building can be used for dining space, classes, and storage for rental bikes and boats. Exiting the building you are faced with an educational garden and an open lawn. Later comes a space for foodtrucks and a streetcar stop. After that you have a children’s play area and an amhpitheater that holds a large lighting tower to notify the community when an event is taking place.

WASHINGTON D.C.
COMMUNITY DESIGN
East Capitol Gateway: Analysis ANALYSIS BACKGROUND The District of Columbia contains four corners of very distinct developments: Alexandria in the South, Falls Church in the West, Silver Spring in the North providing a nice transition from suburbs to urban Washington D.C., and the Heights in the East, an area with great potential to grow and become the next Urban Go-To place. Economically the area has gone downhill due to suburbanization; walkability is currently a 48 making it car dependent; there are many empty lots, currently the property of the D.C. Housing Authority. PRESENT Capitol Heights Metro Station, Marvin Gaye Trail in the North, a Senior Center, a Community Center, a Recreation Center, and new communities help make the Heights an ideal candidate for improving: walkability and safety, business, and creating an entertainment site for all ages.

REGIONAL PLANNING
Brier’s Mill Run Greenway
Location: Riverdale, MD
Criteria: Use GIS to find areas of Brier’s Mill Run that are suitable for development. Multiple maps were created in determing these sites including both natural and cultural features. Later, a larger map was created to determine all opportunities and constraints located in Brier’s Mill Run. Analysis: Natural features include: streams, wetlands, and waterbodies; vegetation; and parks, trails, and recreation. Cultural features include: buildings with schools having a 1/2 mile buffer; the 11 different types of zoning; and main highways, arterials, and connectors along with any noise barriers.

REGIONAL PLANNING
Brier’s Mill Run Greenway
Location: Riverdale, MD
Riverdale Office Plaza This area will focus on both natural and cultural aspects. The design will improve the overall quality of the area by using LID techniques such as greenroofs, wetland restoration, and dechannelization of the streams. The design consists of two office buildings with a cafe on the first floor of one building and a bar/ restaurant on the other. Along Riverdale Rd will be a number of small retail shops allowing for a bright future for Riverdale’s economy. Bike paths are conveniently linked to the plaza to promote a healthier future in commuting with bikes or walking. Lunch breaks may also include a jog through the Wetland Park.

Riverdale Community The community lacks a central place to meet and there’s no better place to create this space than across the street from the proposed purple line Riverdale station. This proposed community will accomodate the increasing population with its multi-use residential buildings while minimizing surface runoff with greenroofs and other LID techniques. Consists of a: community center, community plaza, mixed-use residential, urban bike trail, and Purple Line Riverdal Station

URBAN AGRICULTURE
Urban Agriculture Station
Location: Greenbelt, MD
Criteria: Create an Urban Agriculture Station adjacent to the Greenbelt Metro Station. The Station is a proposed research and educational facility dedicated to all things agricultural. Analysis: Site is currently forested sloping to one corner. Neighborhoods surround the site on the West and North sides. Solution: Include urban farming and a farmer’s market that the surrounding neighbors may participate in. Great location for a farmers market since it’s located at the exit of the Greenbelt Metro. An orchard for fruit, an area for animals, and residential buildings are to be included on the site.

Vectorworks: Symbols Library
Location: Olney, MD
Project: From January-March of 2013 hired as a Freelance Consultant in Vectorworks to create a library of +750 plant symbols, light fixtures, outdoor furniture, kitchen appliances, and misc. objects that the company specifically uses on designs. The plant symbols had a scheduled size and price associated with it that allowed for quickly generating a plant schedule. Numerous worksheets were then created to calculate hardscape, landscape area (turf, mulch, loose stone, and perennial beds), and plant costing with the option of separating cost by phase of development.

IRON AGE
Design Competition: limitless
less
Let's face it...people like options. Why limit yourself to one position?
limitless gives people the flexibility of facing what they want and how they want to do so. Perhaps it's towards a plaza or a playground, a boardwalk or the ocean, or maybe they want the right sunlight. And, since each section acts independently you won't disturb others and their preferences. You can sit upright while your friend lays back. What more can you ask for?
The trash and recycleable bins along with the bollards carry out the same simple design of rounded iron for framing with the soft addition of wood with a waterproof sealant. x

limitless gives people the flexibility of facing what they want and how they want to do so. Perhaps it's towards a plaza or a playground, a boardwalk or the ocean, or maybe they want the right sunlight. And, since each section acts independently you won't disturb others and their preferences. You can sit upright while your friend lays back. What more can you ask for? Bollards come in two sizes and may also act as path lights! Iron Age's high powered water-jet allows for customizeable signs! The trash and recycleable bins along with the bollards carry out the same simple design of rounded iron for framing with the soft addition of wood with a waterproof sealant. x
