T H E S AC R E D G UA R D I A N S O F T H E COA S T Narrating a Changing Village through Religious Architecture Location : Fairbourne, Wales, UK | Typology : Religious, Tourism | Type : Individual Project

The project proposes an alternative method of conveying environmental knowledge, by re-discovering the significance of faith and religious narrative – once a foundation to our cultural advancement, yet has been undermined in the secularised present. Situated in Fairbourne, a Welsh coastal village planned to be decommissioned by 2054 due to its failing sea defence, the project revives the rich heritage of Christian pilgrimage in Wales and proposes three pilgrimage structures across three sites within the village. Utilising theological narration, time, coastal dynamic, eroding materiality and the changing climate as architectural resources and design drivers, each proposed architecture uncovers the varying battles of the village against the future coastal climate. Collectively, the three structures form a journey across the village, conveying a metanarration of repentance and reconciliation as the village slowly returns its long-guarded land to the sea. Following three epochs – a decommissioning timeline set by the council – the three structures are slowly eroded away by the coastal environment, creating new intertidal habitats and revealing contemplative spaces that teach stewardship over the future landscape of Fairbourne. 6

E P H E M E R A L I N T E R CO N N E C T I O N Planting a Societal Reconnection to the Energy System Location : Olympic Park, London, UK | Typology : Public, Educational | Type : Individual Project

Beneath the soil, participation, communication and nutrient transfer occur as means to maintain the resilience of the forest, all enabled by an underground network formed by the fungi. Using the fungi as an architectural metaphoric device, the project contextualises itself within the contemporary era of participatory renewable energy generation. Like the fungal network, the project proposes a new social superstructure in the city of London, claimed as one of the world’s most sustainable cities, which invites public participation in the energy generation through education and activism. The project experiments with translating the metaphor into morphology of interconnected strands and curated movements, ‘planting’ itself within the landscape of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. While moving through the blurred boundaries between the building and the landscape, the park visitors encounter the building’s educational programmes, encouraging their involvement and promoting future democratic energy system.

M O D E R N C E N T R E F O R WO R S H I P The Architectonics of Worship through the Alternate Senses Location : Ouseburne Valley, Newcastle upon Tyne | Typology : Religious Complex | Type : Individual Project

The project addresses the visual dominancy in architecture, building on criticisms by architects such as Juhani Pallasmaa and Steven Holl, more specifically in the production of sacred architecture. The project explores alternate ways of accommodating the spontaneous and dynamic nature of contemporary Christian worship, rejecting visuality as its main expression to propose an alternative complex for Christianity. Instead, the tactile and auditory senses are forced to be the design driver, by choosing the blind worshippers as the main protagonist of the project. Through geometrical exploration of Parallel Walls and Tesseract insertion as its main heuristic devices, these senses are juxtaposed to accommodate the daily routine of the protagonist, while carefully integrating the complex within its site in Ouseburn Valley. The resultant morphology creates rhythms of tactile and auditory spatial experience, composed as a journey of the blind worshippers, and opening up to the public to provide public space and access to the river. A new church typology is thus created, one which reduces visual materiality and acting as a space for both Christians and secular public. 42

A View of Hatcham Park

H ATC H A M A N D I L D E R TO N R OA D Design Code and Masterplanning Location : Southwark, London | Typology : Masterplanning

The brief of the project is to produce a design code for the Hatcham and Ilderton Road regeneration masterplan. Our team took the brief further by redesigning plots of the existing masterplan to provide better accessibility and improve the public realm. My role includes modelling in Revit, assisting in redesigning the masterplan, its ground floor and first floor arrangement, street features, and public realm. I also coordinated with multiple design teams through emails and meetings, producing presentation boards for public consultation meeting, producing drawings and illustration as well as issuing the final design code document, under direct supervision from Farrells’ design director.

The document was published in 2021 by the Southwark Council: https://oldkentroad.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/HatchamIldertonDesignCode.pdf

Masterplan of Future Kingston

EDEN HOUSE A New Multi-Use Complex in Kingston Town Centre Location : Eden Street, Kingston upon Thames | Typology : Multi-Use / Residential

The project consolidates the Royal Borough of Kingston need of affordable housing and diversification, with the clients’ aspiration of creating a new landmark in its town centre. Eden House proposes a reactivation of Eden Street as the main retail avenue, continuing a ‘retail loop’ around the area. The scheme also proposes quality private and affordable housings, arranged vertically, while carefully adapt its form to the city skyline.

52

My role includes assisting from research and feasibility stage to the preparation for planning application. Working with Revit, I assisted design iterations, production of drawings and diagrams, as well as area schedule for the housing schemes. I also helped illustrate the project (hand sketching, Illustrator) and compiled the pre-application documents. I have attended meetings with and presented to the client representatives, various consultants, and RB Kingston council representatives.

R HOUSE EXTENSION Private Residential Location : Jakarta, Indonesia | Typology : Private Residential

The project is an extension to an existing house designed as well by Studio TonTon, to accommodate additional programmes required by the client which includes a gym, a multi-purpose hall, a powder room, a sauna and a spa. Taking design cues from the existing house, the extension continues the language of concrete, glass and timber. A ‘water staircase’ was introduced as a ‘stitch’ between the existing house and the extension, animating the transition between the two.

56

My role on this project includes assisting design iterations through 3D modelling, plans and sections. I was also involved in the production of final renderred images and producing 2D detailed drawings of the scheme. I also attended multiple meetings between the studio lead (Mr Antony Liu), the senior architect, construction engineer, contractor, and the clients.

KU P U KU P U Constructing a Forest in the City Location : ±ON Gallery, Jakarta, Indonesia | Typology : Art Installation

This is an art installation by Studio TonTon in its own private gallery space, ±ON Gallery, commissioned as part of Bintaro Design District (BDD) 2018 open studio event. The installation takes inspiration from the studio’s ongoing projects which mostly sets in the Indonesian forest, and propose a re-creation of the forest experience in its gallery space. Leaves are abstracted as white and reflective butterflies, hung from the ceiling, while pillars of translucent fabric rearrange the space into an allegorical ‘walk in the forest’. My role includes assisting the concept stage, producing early diagrams and mock-up renders. I also helped assisting the fabrication of the pillars and butterflies, coordinating with suppliers for material samples and assisted the curation of the exhibition on site. 58

08 Architecture Competition Nonarchitecture: Dancing Competition Entry (2018)

DA N C E W I T H M E ? An Spatial Alternative to Dancing Location : - | Typology : Architectural Concept

Our team reimagines a new architectural typology for ‘dancing’ as a spatial act of social engagement. Instead of structural manifesto, the spatial proposal takes form as a bracelet which may store a brief information of the user and act as a musical playing device. As users interact at the dance floor, their music synchronises and a social bond may be formed through the bodies moving to the rhythm of their shared music. 60

O U S E B U R N BA N D S TA N D A Temporary Community Bandstand Location : Ouseburne Valley, Newcastle upon Tyne | Typology : Religious Complex | Type : Individual Project

Our proposal for a new bandstand for Ouseburn is one defined by the creative energy of the surroundings and the temporary status of the structure should it be built. Five mobile ‘petals’ close or ‘bloom’ according to the needs of the programme. These petals slowly ‘dissolve’ into its surrounding as graffitis are painted on them. When graffiti has filled all five petals, it signifies the end of life of the proposal, to be replaced with another. 61
