Stage 3 Thesis Project

MODERN CENTRE FOR WORSHIP The Architectonics of Worship through the Alternate Senses The project deals with criticisms towards the visual dominancy in architecture, as expressed by Juhani Pallasmaa and Steven Holl, more specifically in the production of sacred architecture. Through the blind worshippers and their disciples as the chosen protagonists, the project explores alternate ways of accommodating the spontaneous and dynamic nature of Contemporary Christian

Worship. Through the parallel walls and the tesseracts as the main heuristic devices, the tactile and auditory senses are juxtaposed to fit with the daily routines of the protagonists, while also integrating the complex within the site of lower Ouseburn Valley, opening up the complex to be penetrated by the public.

ABSTRACT SPACES In Search for Sensory Experience

The project explores the production of non-contextual spaces through the method of modelling with various materials. The aim is to achieve a sacred atmosphere using nothing but intuition, as the context of the space is unknown. Experiments on materiality, textures, and light is encouraged, differentiating stereotomic

and tectonic languages in architecture using methods such as casting, carving, cutting. The models are then reimagined to be inhabited and contextualized, using photograph and collage with intentional lights that reveals the quality of spaces of the models.

Water

Fire

Gravity

The fluidity of water erodes the mould, made with soap, creating curvatures and folds that gives a sense of softness. When moulded, the concrete reveals a smooth, slippery texture that implies a dialogue with liquid form.

Fire dominates the wooden mould, charring and reducing it to ashes. The concrete experience the result of this process, losing a lot of its moisture and appearing dry and burning, yet warm and comforting, much like the fire.

The plastic stretches as the gravity pull, pushing the boundary of flexibility of the material. When the concrete dries, the stretch marks are clearly apparent. The tension quality produce a heavy appearance, exceeding its actual weight.

Stage 2 Project

A PIANO FACTORY

The Composition of Instrument Production The project explores the relationship between music, geometry, and architecture through accommodating a piano factory in Durham. The concept of geometrical composition that was explored in Wassily Kandinsky’s ‘Komposition 8’ and through analyzing the internal component of a piano is applied to the project, where each geometry accomodates a specific program

of the factory and responds to a particular element of the site. The public circulation cuts through the assembly line and introduces a new typology of factory, where the relationship between the maker and the consumer is drawn closer. The use of steel for the circulation channel introduces dynamic notes of movement to the static production sound of the timber factory.

ARRIVAL // AWAKENING

Cinematography Spatial Reinterpretation: Under the Skin (2013) The project experiments with spatial recreation and reinterpretation of the opening sequence of the 2013 drama/fantasy film Under the Skin. Starring Scarlett Johansson as the main character, an extraterrestrial being landed on earth for the purpose of hunting men, the opening is an abstraction of a process of understanding human environment. The installation tries understand earth as an

inhuman by breaking down earth into its four core elements- fire, water, soil, and man-made objects - projecting them onto an abstract, inhuman object hovering in the centre of the elements. The 1:10 installation model is then utilised to reimagine the scene from a third-eye perspective through a short video, and exhibited to the public as part of Engineering Experience Week.

PERMEABLE FOREST Art Installation - ±ON Gallery, Jakarta

The art installation attempts to situate nature within the modern society by challenging the idea of permeability and proximity. Representing nature, more specifically a forest, with man-made materials such as fabric and paper relates it closer to the artificial world of the city. The translucent fabric ‘tubes’ which mimic tree trunks allows visual connectivity between visitors. The tubes

are placed in grid, representing a dialogue between nature and the system of the urban fabric. The butterflies are designed to collectively inhabit the ‘sky’, creating a sense of enclosure, yet closely resembles artificial objects of nature. The spatial art was installed in ±ON Gallery for Studio TonTon as part of Bintaro Design District Week 2018.

DANCE WITH ME? Non-Architecture Competition - Dance

With the brief of reinventing architectural typology of ‘Dance’, our team reinterpretes the excitement of dancing through the architecture of its social engagement. Taking form of a bracelet, we propose a new way of socialising, where personal information of the user is stored in the bracelet. At the silent club entrance, the bracelet is loaded with the club’s music playlist which suits

the user’s taste. At the dance floor, the user might interact with other people upon which their bracelets synchronise and play the same music to dance to, symbolized with the synchronization of the colour. Both users then enjoy dancing and socialising to the same music which they both share interests in.

OUSEBURN BANDSTAND CONSTRUCT 48-Hour Design Competition, 2nd Prize

The temporary project is defined by the creative environment of Ouseburn as well as nature and time. With the brief of accommodating musical performance and cultural activity, the design proposal takes form of a movable arms which adapts to the programme needed. When not in use, the intervention acts as a medium to channel the creativity of the people through

graffiti. Like a gallery, the arms display the art painted on it to the neighborhood. With the limited space for the graffiti, it then also signifies the temporary nature of the intervention. When the arms are filled with graffiti, the time has come for the intervention to end and to be replaced with another.

Part I Work Experience - Farrells

EDEN HOUSE PROJECT Stimulating Future Regeneration of Kingston The project consolidates the Royal Borough need of affordable housing and diversification for its town centre with the client’s demand of creating a landmark. The Kingston Town Centre, known for being the top three retail destination in London, has experienced a population decline as a result of advancement in technology which change the typology of retail units, as well

as inavailability of quality housing. Working with the surrounding future scheme, the Eden House project attempts to reactivate Eden Street -the prominent retail street- by utilising its ground floor for retail use, forming a continuous retail ‘loop’ around Eden Street. The project also work with its verticality to accommodate new quality housings for the town centre.

R HOUSE EXTENSION Private Residential Housing

The project is an extension to an existing house, with needs to accommodate additional programmatic requirements as requested by the client, including a gym, multi-purpose hall, a powder room, a sauna, and a spa room. Taking cues from the existing house, the extension interplays with materiality of concrete, glass, and timber to create an open space which

allows generous light into the spaces. Element of water is also introduced, as the sound of water brings calmness and peace. The water also become a stitch to the existing house, signifying the introduction of a different experience of the extension while maintaining coherency with the existing house.
