CV Tobias Sebastian Cokro Personal Statement / Introduction Born in Indonesia, I came to Melbourne in order to pursue my study in architecture. Since young i was pretty interested in 3D forms and shapes taught in math subjects at school, and eventually it got me interested in architectural designs. I guess my persistent nature is one of my defining traits, and has helped me in developing further on my problem solving skills and also critical thinking. The open mindset and positive learning attitude towards new things and exposures has always been my drive in moving forward towards new stages in things. Some interests of mine are the theories and philosophy in architecture, noting how to always be mindful of a good design that can improve its surrounding environments, the nature, and its people. I believe this portfolio shows my overall skills and capabilities in architectural area; and my point of view, of every aspect in regards to architecture. Phone Email Address

MP02 Urban Library 2ND YEAR INDIVIDUAL WORK

PUBLIC LIBRARY 243 - 255 Smith St, COLLINGWOOD With the aim to make the proposed building a landmark for the area/precinct, the building’s main idea involves a massive structure that shelters the whole main building, emerging from the idea of that of a bird’s wings. The steel panel cladded into portal truss frame system as the bird’s wings acts as a metaphor of “a bird protecting the whole building”. Glass panels were used for the whole building in order to emphasize the bird’s wings protection. The structure were arrayed in a radial pattern and each at a different height creating a curve/wavy movement resembling a bird’s wing’s form. The radial array pattern acts as the radial joint of the wings around the head while from interior aspect of the building, gives more attraction to the space, notably the stairs void.

Site Plan 1:1000

01

The exposed steel structures acts as an attraction for the top level and can be visibly seen through the glass roof. Despite the use of glass for the whole building the privacy for the reading area is maintained with it being placed on the whole top level area to prevent visual exposure from outside.

MP03 ANT COMMUNITY CENTRE 2ND YEAR GROUP WORK

PUBLIC COMMUNITY CENTRE YARRA RANGES Located at Chirnside Park, Yarra Ranges, this community centre attracts the attention of its surroundings due to its unique and different design as opposed to the plain surroundings of the area. With the concept taken from an ant colony/community, the main idea of the concept is to make people as if they are inside of an ant colony’s own habitat, a community of its own; the ant’s nest. The nest is fully clad with steel panels that emphasizes the ‘border’ while a massive custom box framing system acts as the ‘soil’ surface for the interiors to give off a feeling of being ‘underground’ while at the same time adds playfullness to the building’s design. The frame acts as a shelter while at the same time being ‘transparent’ enough to connect the inside to the outside environment. The building is basically divided into 2 different level; fully habitable area in first level and an unhabitable limited access area in second level where all the framings were placed. The frame takes shape of organically irregular shaped holes as usually seen in an ant’s nest, forming an organic irregular shaped holes throughout the upper part of the building, acting as skylight throughout the whole building’s interiors.

05

Initial Concept The main idea comes from the fact that humans and ants works in a similar way; in a community. Therefore the concept was to design the place in a similar manner to that of an ant community’s shelter/habitat; a human sized ant’s nest.

Massing Study Conceptual Form Creating random irregular-shaped holes inside a box-shaped ‘border that acts as a ’3 dimensional cut-section/border of a ‘cutout’ part of the earth’s soil, where the ant’s nests are.

The real building form is a box with random holes that signitfies ‘a cut-out part of the ant’s nest inside of earth’s soil’. The box were divided into 2 parts, upper part with holes later filled iwth structure that acts as skylight throughout the whole building interiors (no public access) and bottom part for public/ private use spaces (allowed public access). An organic/irregular shaped structure was added to the building exterior as a shelter for outdoor activities.

‘Filler’ Structure A prototype structure that is going to be applied into the organic forms throughout the building which came from the form of an ant, later multiplied throughout the whole building as if ‘building their own nest’.

‘Filler’ Structure Spaceframe Designed to support each other based on triangulated structure, the space, it is able to distribute loads evenly throughout the building, with high strength and minimal resource.

MP03 MASK APARTMENTS 3RD YEAR INDIVIDUAL WORK

MIXED USE APARTMENT 15-21 Earl St, VICTORIA Locateed in between Carlton and Italy cultural place Lygon, the concept aims to expand the Italian culture to the vicinity. Cultural inspiration used is the historically famous theathrical play Commedia Dell’arte. The closest translation of th ename is “the comedy of craft”. It is shortened from Commedia Dell’Arte all’improvvisso or “comedy of the craft of improvisation”, having the genre of “comedy tragedy”. The building design’s concept will be representing the essence of the Italian culture play while the vicinity will be designed/decorated in a more Italian-styled design. Commedia Dell’arte The culture inspiration used is the historically famous theatrical play Commedia Dell’arte. The closest translation to the name is the “comedy of craft”. It is shortened from commedia dell’arte all’improviso, or “comedy of the craft of improvisation”. The play was basically a comedic performance performed by professional actors (comici) who perfected a specific role or mask, while at the same time giving a “tragedy” to the story, hence having the genre “comedy tragedy”. Every character basically has a unique designed mask to portray their characteristics and behavior. The play began in Italy in the 16th century and was possibly the start of improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios.

Initial Concept Shapes of Emotion Some research and development of how various shapes affects and represents different type of emotions.

Massing Study Conceptual Form

Massing Study Conceptual Application The main point of the concept is to implement the metaphor of comedy and tragedy as one entity by using masks as the medium. Human expression was then chosen to be the best and most direct way to deliver the meaning to the visitors.

Design + Concept Development

Colours of Emotion Some considerations have been put on the colours of lighting on the facades. Warm/cold colours to be implemented on sides of the building depending on emotion intended to the people. 10

CHILDHOOD LEARNING CENTRE Stawell St, Steiglitz, VICTORIA The building was designed to attend to both students and adults, people of all group of age will get to experience a good learning trip about sustainability design of a building, showing them how a building can benefit from nature and vice versa. The building shapes in a rigid rectangular form in order to symbolize a man-built structure with parts of it being submerged underground to symbolize “harmony” and “intersection” with its surrounding nature environments while providing sustainability qualities that is otherwise unachievable without submersion. The main ideas for the design mainly revolves around sustainability as its main purpose, as in how design is able to be used to teach the visitors in an interactive way about the importance and benefits of sustainability in a building for nature itself.

MIXED USE BUILDING/ART “PRECINCT” GEELONG Located in Geelong, Artifex:Forma is a mixed use building focused mainly on art based program: Dwellings for artists, studios and workshop, and exhibition space. Mainly consist of 2 underlying ideas combined together, the medium - inspired by the function and idea of photography, “architectural frames” starts to be placed on parts of the building, capturing the moments inside the building forming a series of photography; and the site - serves to respond to the surrounding context and the issues believed to exist on the site, resulting in the finished building’s form.

17

Adjoining Buildings Proposed Site Boundary Building Form

Site Response Universal Access Due to the site having several access points; the building was designed to cope with all the access points available on the site with Moorabool St side as main access point.

Adjoining Buildings Proposed Site Boundary Building Form

Building Form Outdoor Spaces/Environment

Site Response Open Building The site was basically surrounded by buildings; “enclosing” the spaces on the site. In respond the building opens itself to blend with the surroundings instead of creating another “border” between spaces(indoor and outdoor spaces).

Building Form Architectural “Frames”

Medium Integration According to the brief we have to choose a type of art as our main medium, which will be one of the main things that is driving our concept throughout the whole project. “Photography” was chosen as the medium. Mainly inspired by the function and idea of frames-a part of a photography. Frames acts as the piece that completes photograpy as a whole, and acts as the border between inside and outside(the picture as the “inside” and surroundings as “outside”). Frames also serves to capture and keep the “moments” inside the photography itself. “Architectural frames” starts to be placed on parts of the building, capturing the moments inside the building forming a series of photography.

1 “Frame” Concept Front Facade The building was to adapt to the adjoining streetscape facade articul ation; to blend with its surroundings. Frame concept also applied to the building facade; as it is the building’s main identity.

2 “Frame” Concept Lobby As the main entry point of the building, the lobby is the main “pivot” area where people gather to go to main exhibition space on level above. Another frame was placed to capture the lively environment.

3 “Frame” Concept Clare Street Entrance Clare St being the main street for vehicular access has a distinct feature as in the entrance ther is a structure resemblin an ornament of sorts, possibly acting as “gateway” for Clare St. Another “frame” was made out of the existing structure symbolizing 2 sides of entrance (the other being Moorabool St) that acts as a gesture and captures/gives a hint of the building; and lastly engaging with streetscape at Clare St.

RELAXATION CENTRE - BATH HOUSE/MEDITATION CENTRE PRINCESS HWY, SOUTHBANK Located in Southbank area, Melbourne, with the vicinity mostly populated by work-based/work-oriented places, the main intention of the idea is to break out of the norm, to create a building that was not yet there and was necessary to balance out the living conditions/standards of the area vicinity. The result from that is a place of relaxation, a place for people to escape from their usual business and to recover themselves from the exhaustion of everyday life routine. Site Plan

Initial Concept Site By looking at the site analysis of the physical surrounding context, the two places above and below the highway gives off a seemingly contrast environmental experience; therefore the concept of relaxation place takes shape according to the surrounding context resulting in the main idea of the building. The place was to be a place of “refuge” that gives off a sense of protection/ sheltered environment below the highway, ascending to “sanctuary” to provide a feeling of uplift as it ascends above the highway.

COMPETITION ENTRY, JANUARY 2016

INFRASTRUCTURE + LAND USE PLANNING BUNDARAN HI, JAKARTA, INDONESIA These days traffic density has been ever-increasing in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. As the country’s economic, cultural and political centre, it is full of all kinds of activity and people. These events occurs in all around the city, with the ever-increasing use of motorized vehicle as one of the main reasons for it. As the problem gets bigger, transportation consumes more time and starts to affect the efficiency/ productivity of jobs around the city. Addressing to this issue, we decided to create a transportation system new to the country in order to encourage the use of public transportation which is more efficient and convenient for travelling around the city.

Before - Traffic Level

After - Traffic Level

Few transportation hub will be placed in each region of the city (west, east, north, south, central) as a prototype connecting to each other in a bigger scale in order to disperse and reduce the traffic, with people only having to use private vehicle/minor pubic transport to the hub, and be able to use the new system afterwards for middle to long distance travel. Other programs to provide daily necessity for the people will also be integrated in the hub, which in turn will attract more people to the vicinity. Lastly the hub also serves as a “momentary escape” from daily life and a remedy to its surroundings.
