LETTER from the President

For this purpose, enter into the spirit of your Institute, and stir up in you the zeal that God wishes you to have in its fullness, so that you can give your students some understanding of this sacred mystery. — Saint John Baptist de La Salle

Dear Saint Mary’s Community,

When Saint La Salle founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools, he recognized that zeal for the education of youth should be the “spirit of their institute.” At Saint Mary’s, zeal for our educational mission also drives us today. For nearly 150 years, that passion has played out in significant and meaningful ways — expressions of a unique blend of Catholic, Lasallian and liberal arts traditions — that touch the lives of everyone in our community and the greater world. In the past year, our aspirations have resulted in measured success in every area of the College. Our faculty have been recognized for their exemplary teaching and research. Our students have gained high praise in activities from the arts and athletics to service and global outreach. Our undergraduate enrollment numbers are the highest they have ever been, and our alumni and friends are increasingly expressing their enthusiasm for our mission by increased giving that provides critical support for our students, faculty, facilities and programs. In the pages of the annual report that follows, we introduce you to just a few of the ideas and people that are the embodiment of the Saint Mary’s spirit. Together and by association, we are a community of faith and zeal living out our vital mission. And our collective energy makes us unstoppable.

In Saint La Salle,

CHARTING THE COURSE

for the Next Century

ow do students learn differently in the 21st cen-

tury? What is important to know in our rapidly changing world? And how will the College chart its course for the next 150 years? These are questions Provost Beth Dobkin and her faculty colleagues have been thinking about over the past two years. Two products emerged — a new Academic Blueprint and new core curriculum. Together, they aim to make the College the best it can be as a 21st century institution, while preserving its Lasallian traditions. ACADEMIC BLUEPRINT

Released in the spring of 2011, the blueprint will be implemented over the next five years. It focuses on academic programs and activities that promote an integrated, collaborative and distinctive educational experience for both students and professors alike. “The Blueprint brings together the strengths and aspirations of our community as it has been expressed over several years and it draws on the inspiration of people who are doing innovative and impactful work with students,” says Beth Dobkin, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “The directions provide the framework for how we want to see the direction of intellectual engagement and activity move forward.” Goals of the blueprint include: • Increasing diversity in students, faculty and staff and developing a curriculum that targets diversity and inclusiveness. • Increasing the number of international students on campus and student participation in study abroad, and offering more options. • Developing infrastructure, including a major renovation and expansion of the library to be completed in 2015. • Developing 4+1 degree programs, with the first likely to be M.S. in accounting and an M.A. in leadership with a concentration in social justice. • Improving retention rates and the amount of time it takes students to get their degrees. THE NEW CORE

Beginning with freshman entering in fall 2012, the College will launch a new core curriculum defined by 12 learning goals that will guide professors as they teach, students as they learn and have measurable outcomes. Rather than being just a smorgasbord of class choices, the new core curriculum will enrich students in a broader sense. “We’re trying to define the purpose of education. We want students and faculty to think about why we take (or teach) a certain course. What should we be doing in that course? What type of experience should all students have about the subject of the course?” says Jim Sauerberg, professor of mathematics and computer science and chair of the Core Curriculum Implementation Committee. And it’s important for them to understand how the classes they take are interconnected, as well as how what they learn is connected to the world at large. “It’s not just about a degree as a piece of paper. It’s about developing students as intellectual adults,” he says.

through one transformational gift or through the combined efforts of the hundreds who contribute to the SMC Fund each year, gifts to Saint Mary’s positively change the College forever. During the 2010–11 fiscal year, Saint Mary’s raised $39 million, breaking all previous fundraising records. Much of the money was given to support capital projects that will have a lasting impact on campus. Construction began on one of them in July — a new baseball field, which is scheduled to be completed in February 2012 and marks the first phase of the new $30 million Athletics and Recreation Corridor. The corridor project’s centerpiece, the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center, will include a fitness center, swimming pool, climbing wall and three full-sized courts and is expected to be operational in fall 2013. A 1,500-seat baseball stadium will continue to enhance a sport that was the college’s first intercollegiate sport in 1889 and produced 62 major league baseball players. “Individual wellness, personal growth and a healthy body, mind and spirit all play a critical role in Saint Mary’s College education. The Athletics and Recreation Corridor will serve as a key component of the overall educational experience,” says Mark Orr, director of athletics and recreational sports. A second capital project transformed the Hearst Art Gallery into the Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art, which opened in September with two new galleries and 50 percent more space than before. The additional space allows the College to display more selections from its collection of 4,500 works of art, including the museum’s William Keith Collection of 180 paintings by the 19th century California landscape painter. The new museum now more than ever will be, as Carrie Brewster, director of the Saint Mary’s College Museum of Art, says, “a significant and diverse resource for visual arts and lifelong learning for our Saint Mary’s College community, the greater Bay Area communities and beyond.”

ered on the airwaves, in column inches or bytes of data, one thing’s for certain: Saint Mary’s is increasingly making its mark in today’s media landscape. During the 2010–11 academic year, the College and its faculty, students and alumni were quoted or discussed in the media on more than 2,000 occasions, and SMC faculty were mentioned in news stories 235 times, up 97% from just two years ago. From stories in some of the nation’s top-tier newspapers — the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times — to mentions on small websites, such as Patch.com and Rugbymag. com, professors, deans and alumni proved to be active thought leaders in the public sphere. As Saint Mary’s College faculty are increasingly quoted in print and broadcast media as experts on everything from political unrest in Egypt to safe and reliable energy in the United States, School of Liberal Arts Dean Steve Woolpert is standing out as a frequent voice in the external conversation about important local and national issues. “Academics have a responsibility to contribute to public dialogue and share their expertise as public intellectuals outside their own classrooms,’’ said Woolpert, who started teaching at Saint Mary’s 30 years ago. “It’s always been my sense that it’s not just the role of an academic to discover knowledge but to put that knowledge into practice, to apply it to social problems.” Beth Dobkin, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the College encourages faculty to participate in interviews and a few years ago its Office of College Commu nications launched a media training program that covers speaking in front of a camera, making ideas succinct and answering questions on target. “I’d say in the last year Saint Mary’s is breaking out. Instead of being this small pastoral college that nobody knows about, there is a big push to show off what we are doing,’’ she said. “Enough of this hidden gem stuff.” Steve Woolpert, Dean, School of Liberal Arts

By taking this action now,” they state, “we can continue to create an environment in which Christianity is not only studied but lived; celebrated in the liturgy, served by mission and ministry and the Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action, and sustained by faith-filled witness.” What does this document mean for the future of Catholic education at Saint Mary’s and other schools? “It is one expression among many currently emerging on Catholic campuses,” says Brother Charles. ‘CLEAR WINNER’ OF DEBATE “The clear winner of the Boxer-Fiorina debate was the host college, which provided a gorgeous backdrop and smooth logistics with an army of student volunteers.” —San Francisco Chronicle editorial

O

n Sept. 1, 2010, Saint Mary’s hosted a live U.S. Senate Debate in the College’s LeFevre Theatre. While incumbent Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer would go on to trounce Republican challenger Carly Fiorina in the senatorial race, the real victor of the debate, however, would prove to be Saint Mary’s. As a result of a strategic partnership between the College and media partners KTVU-TV, KQED-FM and the San Francisco Chronicle, the phrase “live from Saint Mary’s College” was broadcast into more than a half million California households, distributed statewide to a network of California Public Radio stations and on CSPAN-TV. Scores of media outlets descended on the College, giving SMC faculty experts and students opportunities to provide thoughtful commentary on important election issues. The debate generated approximately 870 news mentions and was featured in national outlets such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NPR, The Associated Press and the “CBS Morning News.” The debate fostered increased regional and national awareness of the College and sparked an enthusiasm that was felt throughout the SMC community and beyond. Even the San Francisco Chronicle — one of the debate’s media sponsors — declared that Saint Mary’s was the clear winner of the debate because of its “gorgeous backdrop and smooth logistics with an army of student volunteers.” Following the event, there was a sense that the College could do more. The staff team behind the senate debate posed the question, “Why not shoot for the stars by hosting a presidential debate for the College’s 150th anniversary in the 2012–13 academic year?” Plans were devised. A state of the art application packaged was created, along with a video showcasing SMC’s gorgeous campus and facilities. The hard work would pay off. In April 2011, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) listed Saint Mary’s among a dozen institutions under consideration for a 2012 debate. 12

Saint Mary’s fifth in the nation among colleges that prepare students to succeed beyond expectations, it might have had Shayna Olesiuk ’99 in mind. As the San Francisco regional manager of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, she provides economic analysis to the agency, which protects our deposits in case of bank failure — an increasingly real prospect these days. Her territory encompasses 11 states and the island of Guam. The gregarious Olesiuk echoed the Forbes article, saying that the College’s emphasis on developing critical thinking skills was the changemaker for her. “I came into Saint Mary’s very shy and introverted. In Seminar, I learned to participate in conversation, to speak succinctly and clearly, and to support my point of view,” she says. Fittingly, one of her main duties these days is to present and defend her economic findings at regular business roundtables — much like the round tables of Seminar past. During his freshman year, he was finally granted sanctuary and legal residency status. He also pursued a strong interest in Catholic social teaching through his work with Janet Luce, the first director of CILSA, and other teachers who, he says, “shaped my vision of theology and taught me to bring together the intellectual, sociological and historical perspective.” After graduating from Saint Mary’s, Guardado worked with inner-city children in New York as a Lasallian Volunteer and earned an M.A. in theology from Notre Dame. In 2008, he returned to Saint Mary’s as director of justice and education for Mission and Ministry and developed the model for immersion trips, in which students travel to Salinas or the U.S.-Mexico border to gain a better understanding of complex immigration issues. “It was like coming full circle,” Guardado said. “It was a chance to bring the Catholic social teaching perspective into the ministry.” Leo Guardado ’04

New Student Enrollment:

LARGER, SMARTER, MORE DIVERSE

his fall Saint Mary’s not

only enrolled the most students in its history — it also enrolled the smartest, most geographically diverse group ever. Undergraduate enrollment for the 2011–2012 academic year increased by 8 percent over the previous year with an all-time high of 2,830 students. What’s more, first-year student applications were up 27 percent, which allowed the College to become more selective (a 69 percent accept ance rate, versus 75 percent last year — also a school record), to yield a freshman class of 648 students. With an average GPA of 3.56 and average total SAT critical reading and math score of 1120, this freshman class is the strongest in the College’s history. The quality of the 199 transfer students has improved, too, evidenced by the fact that 27 of them enrolled with honors at entrance, nearly twice as many as the year before. The reasons for improved enrollment are many according to Michael Beseda, vice president for college communications and vice provost for enrollment. “People are increasingly recognizing the quality of a Saint Mary’s education. And because of our increasing visibility, those who may not have known about Saint Mary’s in the past are now aware and are applying,” he says.

More aggressive recruiting efforts, especially in Texas, Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest, have improved geographical diversity, with a 22 percent increase in the number of out-of-state freshman this year. Recruiters also spent more time traveling internationally, concentrating on the Philippines, Thailand, China, Japan and Korea. So what does it all mean? “It means that Saint Mary’s is being perceived as a more competitive institution in general,” says Beseda. “And in particular the students are going to bring a more intellectual perspective to their classes, and the discussions around the table and in the dorm will be richer.” And from the student perspective, it’s all about a good fit. Just ask Joanna Faletti, a freshman from Washington, D.C. With plans to teach kindergarten, she was attracted by the Teachers for Tomorrow program. Faletti also was interested in a school with small classes. But her passion for Saint Mary’s goes beyond that. “I just love it here. I remember coming on campus and feeling so comfortable,” she says. “It really feels like home.” WWW.STMARYS-CA.EDU 15

t started as a show of support for the Saint Mary’s Gaels and became the unofficial anthem for the school and the basketball team. Now, almost a year after it’s debut on YouTube, the celebrated “Gaels Gone Wild” video has been viewed by over 175,000 online visitors. “I’m surprised,” said co-director and 2010 graduate Devon Perez ’08, “because Saint Mary’s is such a small school.” But he and brother, Hart, started hearing the buzz just hours after the rap video was posted. “The next day we went into the city and ran into some Saint Mary’s graduates at a club. I didn’t know these students,” said Devon, “and they were bringing it up.” The spark that fueled the creative effort was the Gaels’ Cinderella run all the way to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA playoffs in 2010. “We wanted to do something fun to celebrate basketball,” said Hart, who graduated from SMC in 2008 with a degree in communication and a minor in philosophy. “We didn’t really have any guidelines, just that it would be family-friendly and something everybody could get behind.” Little did they know that the video would promote not only Saint Mary’s, but the brothers’ own business venture, as well. “It was a nice piece to help establish us as creative minds – as film makers,” Hart said. “Before then, a lot of people saw us as technicians, not artists.”

for the more than 200 undergraduate students, annually, who immerse themselves in Jan Term travel and study abroad through Saint Mary’s College. More than half of all SMC undergraduates have had a study abroad experience (Jan Term travel courses are the primary reason), which places the College seventh in the nation in study abroad opportunities among institutions awarding master’s degrees, according to a study by the International Education Exchange. Jan Term courses are faculty led, which means students travel in a group with a professor. “They have a quote unquote protector with them,” says Susie Miller Reid, Director of SMC’s Center for International Programs. That’s true in Rome, the most popular destination for Saint Mary’s students, as well as lesser-known regions like Tonga and Rwanda. “They gain a lot of independence and they gain a lot of courage. They gain confidence and overcome obstacles and they come back much more solid and confident adults.” Communication major Virginia Gilchrist ’12 recalls her time in France as a total immersion in a new culture. “The education I got on a daily basis from just walking to school, buying groceries at the markets, and interacting with French people was more than I could ever learn in years of sitting in a classroom.” Jan Term allows students to take courses they wouldn’t normally take in their curriculum. The theme of the 2011 Jan Term was “New Histories: Reliving, Rethinking, Remaking,” which invited students to reflection, critical analysis — and action. Miller Reid calls Saint Mary’s study abroad program “mind opening.” “Our world is getting smaller and this particular generation is most likely going to be working with global partners,” she says. “If they’ve had the experience of already living abroad — studying abroad — it’s life-changing.”

Reading Recovery Program Gets

$2 MILLION BOOST

SHOMARI CARTER

ow achievement in reading is a

problem whose effects reach far beyond the classroom. More than $2 billion is spent every year on public school students who repeat a grade due to reading problems, data from the federal government shows. What’s more, up to 40 percent of American children compromise their education because they don’t read well enough, quickly enough, or easily enough, according to a study from the Committee on Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children of the National Research Council. The Saint Mary’s College Reading Recovery program is working to change that. Last fall, the Kalmanovitz School of Education received a $1.4 million grant through the U.S. Department of Education to expand “Reading Recovery,” a teacher training and literacy intervention education program designed to help first graders learn to read and write. The college, which also received books from publishers for the program and funds from private foundations bringing the total added support for the initiative up to nearly $2 million, is the only institution in California to receive the award. “With all the various budget cuts to education and to teaching, this is indeed a bright light,” said Kalmanovitz Dean Phyllis MetcalfTurner. “It only reaffirms what we believe is critical for students’ academic success and achievement in school.” The College has had the program for the past two decades, but the goal between 2010 and 2015 is to significantly boost teacher training and service to students and train 50 teachers a year, said program director Adria Klein. Klein said a first grader’s participation is determined by the results of a six-part test that is given to those whose skills are in the lowest 20 percent of the class and a recommendation from the teacher. “Early intervention is before some habits have formed and it’s before they have experienced failure so we can keep them interested in school and help them succeed as readers and writers,’’ Klein said. The average success rate of the program hovers around 70 percent, Klein said. “But we consider all children successful because even if they need further service we can have a better understanding of their specific needs.”

Financial Highlights 2010–11 The finances of Saint Mary’s College are showing signs of recovery from the negative impact of the credit crisis and the recession. Indicators include growth in assets, a decline in short and long-term liabilities, and an increase in operating revenues and expenditures. These factors combined to create a $38.8 million or 25 percent increase in net assets to $194.1 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011. Growth in assets reflects increased cash flow from operations, increased contributions from donors for operating and non-operating support, and growth in endowment investments primarily attributed to annual endowment investment performance of 19.2 percent. The decline in liabilities, in turn, reflects a reduction in long-term debt and the lack of borrowing from the College’s line of credit. The increase in operating revenues can be attributed to a record number of new undergraduate students in fall 2010, increased retention of returning undergraduate students, increased net tuition revenue from new undergraduate students, and increased net income from graduate and professional programs. Increased operating expenditures can be attributed to enrollment related increases and strategic investments in facilities, programs, and faculty and staff compensation and benefits. The 25 percent increase in net assets for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 is a very strong indicator that the College is recovering from the credit crisis and recession. Increased enrollments, increased net tuition revenue, increased operating results, increased donor contributions, increased endowment assets, decreased debt, and increased strategic investments in the College’s students, employees and facilities all contributed to the growth in net assets that occurred during the fiscal year. Some of the factors that contributed to the growth in net assets for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 appear to be present in the fiscal year ahead. Fall 2011 data indicates continued growth in total undergraduate enrollment and growth in net tuition income that will exceed budgeted expectations. Based on this encouraging data, the College should be able to continue to make strategic investments and grow its net assets. The College also appears to be well positioned to weather a slow economic recovery and a volatile financial environment for borrowing and investing. Respectfully submitted,

Philanthropic Support 2010–11 I am pleased to report that the 2010–11 fiscal year was the College’s most successful year in generating external support. The College raised a total of $39,027,479 in gifts and pledges representing a new fund raising record at Saint Mary’s. Much of the generosity from donors came in support of capital projects. Seventy percent of the funds needed for the Athletic and Recreation Corridor Project, encompassing a new recreation center and baseball stadium, have been pledged. With construction begun in July on phase one, the project is taking shape at the front of campus. The College was blessed with a number of estate gifts, including one from Mary Torrey Dooms. Her generous bequest enabled the current expansion of the Art Gallery as well as funds for long-term support. The estate of the late William L’Heureux ’35 established a scholarship fund for graduate business students with a donation of $731,000, the largest gift ever received for graduate student support. The number of donors giving to the College jumped by 23 percent over the previous year to a new record high. Donors to the President’s Club increased by 28 percent to a record 645. Kudos go to the Class of 2011, who also set a record, with 54 percent of its members contributing to the senior class gift. Beginning this summer, we launched two new recognition levels. The 1863 Society, which replaces the longtime President’s Club, was created for donors providing core annual support of $1,863 or more, and the new President’s Circle recognizes annual giving at the $5,000 level and above. In April, preceding the official launch, the first President’s Circle black-tie dinner was held at the historic Claremont Hotel for 125 guests. Attendance at a generous slate of events for alumni, parents and friends grew as more of the College’s extended family gathered on campus and at sites around the world to celebrate their affiliation with Saint Mary’s. We look forward to ever increasing involvement and support as the College prepares for its sesquicentennial year of celebration beginning next summer.

park in Salinas, where they worked in the carnation fields. But his family wanted more for the next generation. My parents were “always stressing education, education,” he says. After earning a B.S. in business analysis and finance from San Francisco State University and working in the recruiting field for several years, he enrolled in the MBA program at Saint Mary’s, earning his degree in 2005. Just a few months later, he started Lighthouse Management Group, which specializes in the placement of top-tier accounting and finance, business support and management professionals. The company has experienced triple-digit annual growth, and the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal has included Woo in its “40 under 40” list of the valley’s rising stars.

In 2011, Woo decided to give back to the College and established the Lighthouse Scholarship for Diversity, which is designed to attract Asian Americans by providing a $5,000 meritbased award for incoming Professional MBA or Executive MBA students. He also serves on the SMC Board of Regents and the advisory board of the School of Economics and Business Administration. “Saint Mary’s was the springboard I needed to propel me forward in launching my business. Without the extra knowledge I gained, I probably wouldn’t be where I’m at today. That’s why I’m compelled to give back,” said Woo. “By creating the type of scholarship that we’ve created, I can support a cause that I’m a strong advocate for, promoting diversity.”

arning a college degree is no easy task. Now imagine doing all that without the ability to see, or with a loss of balance, or numbness and weakness in your limbs. Students with disabilities do this every day. That’s why Bernard Valdez created the Kevin Valdez Endowed Scholarship Fund in 1996 to help students with disabilities earn their degrees. Bernie’s son, Kevin Valdez ’78 MA ‘87, earned a bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling at Saint Mary’s. During his time here, doctors discovered he had a cancerous brain tumor. Kevin underwent seven surgeries, eventually one side of his body became paralyzed. He lost his coordination and he lost partial eyesight. Kevin continued to pursue a second master’s degree in education at Saint Mary’s because he wanted to counsel other cancer patients. In 1996 Kevin lost his battle with cancer. And while this loss was deeply painful for Bernie, it also lit a fire in his own life. He wanted to help students with disabilities earn their degrees. In watching Kevin as an enthusiastic college student and athlete, and then seeing him paralyzed but still wanting to earn his second master’s degree, Bernie realized what a struggle disabled students endure compared to the average college student. “I wish donors would recognize the needs disabled students have and support them,” Bernie says. “They have to be dedicated and focused. It’s very difficult.” He hopes that, through his contributions, students with disabilities can have the same opportunities and experiences to get an education. Bernie stated, “It is extremely gratifying when you see a student with a disability overcome and succeed. They are so appreciative.” As a former student, employee and parent at Saint Mary’s College, Bernie will continue to contribute, as he has since 1996, because he believes strongly in disabled students’ strength and in their struggle.
