SECOND EMPIRE
8 Second Empire style – or inspiration – begins when NapolÊon III ascends the throne in 1852. It characterizes luxurious interiors and creations shared by the sovereigns and the powerful bourgeoisie. However it cannot be considered as a homogeneous style since eclectic style is the rule. 1VLMML \PM ;MKWVL -UXQZM XZWL]K\QWV QV \PM ÅMTL WN N]ZVQ\]ZM IVL _WZS[ WN IZ\ ZIVOM[ NZWU historic styles replicas to original creations inspired by exoticism or enabled through new techniques. Second Empire inspiration persists until the end of the century when the Art Nouveau, inspired by nature and Eastern models gives birth to new creations. Thus, the eclectic taste for historic style runs throughout the whole second half of the 19th century. It relies on combination of decorative patterns from Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, styles of the 18th century etc., and the restoration of old techniques such as Boulle marquetry, vernis Martin, mother-of-pearl inlaying, use of porcelain plaques, renewal of cloisonnÊ enamel‌ Objects of art become then I JI\\TM ÅMTL NWZ OZMI\ IZ\Q[\[ IVL UIV]NIK\]ZMZ[ I[ QTT][\ZI\ML Ja \PM KWUXM\Q\QWV JM\_MMV \PM JZWVbM KI[\MZ .MZLQVIVL *IZJMLQMVVM ! ELEGANT SET OF THREE MIRRORS
RĂŠf: 1599
Italy 19th Century Main mirror : Height : 49 cm (19.3 in.) ; Width : 43 cm (16.9 in.) ; Depth : 6 cm (2.3 in.) Small mirrors : Height : 40 cm (15.7 in.) ; Width : 34 cm (13.4 in.) ; Depth : 4 cm (1.6 in.) Elegant set of three mirros, probably Venetian, in gilded bronze and scalloped shape, resting on an easel. Rich ornementation inspired by the rocaille, decorated with foliage, acanthus leaves and shells. Originally in tin or bronze, the discovery of the glass mirror is a revolution : its invention in Murano offers new possibilities for its use. This secret of manufacture expands slowly in Europe, and Italy keeps the exclusivity and exports its mirrors in the rest of Europe, influencing the production.
OBJECTS OF ART
The simplicity of the first mirror frames evolves to follow the Gothic and Renaissance spirit of the time. Bronze ornaments, precious stones are associated with wood. During the 17th century, manufactures appear in other European countries, soliciting the expertise of the Venetian glass masters. The production of glass mirrors improves, allowing the fabricants to obtain bigger surfaces and shapes that match the interior design. If the mirror fabrication has reached throughout the centuries many countries, the Venetian mirror remains well-known for its luxury, its elegance and its prestigious shape.

PAIR OF EWERS Signed MILLET A PARIS
France +QZKI 8 Heigth : 65 cm (25,6 in.) ; Width : 31 cm (12,2 in.)
OBJECTS OF ART
Beautiful pair of Louis XV style ewers in « Brèche sanguine » marble and gilded bronze. Rich Rocaille decoration with asymmetrical foliage motifs, resting on an elegant openwork scalloped base. The handle is embellished with a finely chiseled threatening dragon. Renowned for the quality of its chiselling and the choice of materials, the Millet firm had a large workshop with many workers, using its own bronze models and enjoyed collaborations with famous sculptors and bronze-casters suche as Claude Marioton. Characteristic of the Millet firm’s production, the reinterpretation of the Rocaille style concerned both furniture and works of art. The mastery in the execution of curved lines, the delicacy in the asymmetrical representation of shells and plants suggest the influence of models of ornamentalists such as Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier for the realization of such works of art.
View of the workshop of the Maison Millet, presenting an ewer similar to ours.

PAINTINGS
Atrium with a rich Pompeian decor in which a young woman lying on a bed is playing with a sparrow, not paying attention to the man sat at her feet. This painting is a major work of art of C. G. Brun, well-know for the precision of his technic, by the elegance of its composition, the pureness of the colors, the refinement of the touch and the expressivity of the characters. This rare intimist scene in a interior decorated in the Pompeian style perfectly illustrates the taste of the time for the discovery of the villas of Pompei, thanks to the archeological excavations of the 18th century and the books published about them. To arrange its interiors based on the models of the Pompeian villas is then a trend that the most important people of that time will follow, as the Prince Napoléon, cousin of the Emperor Napoléon III, who orders the construction of a splendid Pompeian villa on the Avenue Montaigne, of which nothing remains but a few pictures and a painting by Gustave Boulanger, dated 1861 and called Répétition du « Joueur de flûte » et de la « Femme de Diomède » chez le Prince Napoléon. This painting illustrates the poem « Fletus passeris Lesbiae » from the collection « Carmina » written by Catulle (87-54 av. J.-C.) : in his work, the author, in love with Lesbie, a married woman living in Rome, puts on a show a sparrow as the main center of interest of its mistress who neglects her suitor.

PAINTINGS
This allegory of the game/chance is illustrated by a girl blindly putting her hand in a bag. This theme is emphazised by the presence of a butterfly held above her. Author of genre and portrait scenes, Henry Picou has mainly distinguished himself, in the neo-Greek movement of the second half of the 19th Century, in the representation of allegorical paintings thanks to his delicate and colorful touch.

PAINTINGS
Beautiful composition representing Cupid prisoner, surrounded by women dressed in antique outfits preparing to punish him. The allegorical painting is a genre in which Pierre Henry Picou has distinguished himself throughout his career, favouring happy and lively scenes. Although this is a moral scene, the paintor, by his light, delicate touch and his bright colors manages to bring clemency to the subject.

PAINTINGS
Unlike the Eighteenth-century painters who portray Venice in a very architectural way with the genre of the ÂŤ veduta Âť (based on the perspective representation of an urban landscape), Giacomo Mantegazza uses the city as a simple background for his genre scenes, as he did many times for gallant themes. His fine and precise touch gives a great expressiveness to his models, usually placed at the center of very detailed compositions.

AN EXCEPTIONAL OPAL GLASS CHANDELIER France Circa 1880 Height: 110 cm (43.3 in.) ; Diam. : 87 cm (34.2 in.) Rare Baccarat opal glass chandelier composed of a cup suspended by six opal glass and gilded bronze articulated chains from which go twelve cut-crystal light-arms and of a ceiling lamp with cut edge. Rich decoration of a « bleu céleste » opal-glass background enhanced with a golden decor and bouquets of flowers. The whole is embellished with a lovely gilded bronze mount of foliage motifs.
LIGHTS
That elegant floral decoration was probably painted by Jean-François Robert (1778-1870), who was a painter at the Sèvres porcelain Manufacture and who worked for the Baccarat Manufacture between 1845 and 1860. The first painted decorations on opal crystal were baked at low-temperature and were easily damaged. The creation of a painted and vitrified decoration allowed stabilising durably on the opal glass an abundant and vivid decoration often composed of flowers and enhanced with gold. The technic of opal glass, obtained by addition of tin oxide, was known in Venice as soon as the 16th century. However it was only in 1810 that this technic was adapted to crystal in France. The first opal crystal pieces were adorned with a cutwork and gilt bronze mounts, but short after the painted and baked decoration then developed adorned opal crystal pieces with polychrome and refined ornaments, creating real paintings on opal crystal.
