Welcome www.whatsoncornwall.co.uk

Welcome to the first issue of the What’s on Cornwall Guide.

Events

In January 2013, on a foul, wet Cornish evening I sat in my spare room and watched the first few visitors use the What’s on Cornwall website as it went live. In the year and a bit since then, we have listed over 10,000 events and had over 200,000 unique visitors. The website is now the number one events listing website in Cornwall and, thanks to our high ranking in Google, we’re now getting thousands of people a week searching our site for events. I can’t begin to tell you how pleased and proud that makes me. I built it because I got fed up with hearing people talk about great Cornish events and saying ‘’I wish I’d known about that, I’d have gone.’’ I’m hugely passionate about all the events that take place in Cornwall, from the big festivals down to the small community-driven gatherings in our village halls. You see, events are Cornwall’s best kept secret; there are so many, and yet so few people know about them. It’s such a shame that thousands of fantastic events don’t have a better voice and that’s why I built What’s on Cornwall. Now the website is up to speed we have decided to launch this printed guide to help promote all the events that people tell us about. So please get out and support these events. And if you’re putting on one yourself, make sure you let us know about it. It’s free to list your event and if you want extra profile we have a range of great value listing and advertising options. Thank you and enjoy… Toby Budd What’s on Cornwall @watson_cornwall

In Cornwall we’re especially proud of our heritage and culture. In May, as the county wakes from its wintry sleep, we celebrate the bloom of new life with many local events and traditions. Welcome Spring at Padstow’s May Day festival, dance your way through the streets of Helston on Flora Day or wax poetic at the Bodmin Moor Poetry Festival. There’s no better cause for celebration than Cornwall in Springtime.

Sunday

08 May All day

Flora Day Helston Helston, the Cornish market town, where for hundreds of years the townsfolk have celebrated and enjoyed the wonderful tradition that is Flora Day. It is a Spring festival to celebrate the end of winter and mark the arrival of the new vitality and fertility with the trees and flowers bursting into life. The houses and shops of the town are decorated with greenery and floral arrangements to express the spirit of renewal. When the big bass drum strikes the first beat of the dance at seven in the morning, the spirit of the day is stirred and the celebrations commence. Some eighty couples dance through the streets, entering selected houses and shops to drive out the darkness of winter and bring in the light of spring. Head over to Helston to watch this enchanting Cornish celebration.

May Day May Day is held on the first Monday in May. It is widely regarded to have originated as a Roman festival heralding the coming of summer and the end of winter. As the weather starts to improve and the countryside begins to blossom, May Day celebrates the fertility and hope of the coming season. There are many different customs associated with this day, particularly that of Maypole Dancing. The participants, usually girls, each hold a ribbon attached to a central pole and as they dance a decorative pattern is formed down the pole. Another widespread tradition is Morris Dancing. Accompanied by loud accordion music, this type of dance is performed by men dressed in white costumes with bells on. They carry long wooden sticks and scarves, which are used to create noise and spectacle. Other traditions include decorating houses with flowers and leaves, making floral garlands, and crowning a May Queen to represent Flora, the Roman goddess. In more recent times, May Day has become a day to campaign for and celebrate the rights of workers. Marches organised by the trade unions are often held at this time.

The Double

Legendary director Ron Howard joins forces with Oscar-nominated writer Peter Morgan to reignite the fierce rivalry that existed between 1970’s Formula One drivers, English playboy James Hunt and the cool and calculating Austrian, Niki Lauder. Crammed full of thrilling race scenes it also explores the complex relationship between the two drivers, breaking the mould of your average speed-filled flick.

A long-married couple played by Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan revisit Paris in the hope that it will re-kindle their relationship. But will it tear them apart? This bittersweet portrayal of the cracks that can appear in a 30-year marriage is both honest and touching without straying in to over-sentimentality.

Robert Redford plays one of his most challenging roles to date in this almost dialogue free epic about one man’s battle to survive, adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the minimalist dialogue and the one-man cast, its depiction of such extreme solitude strikes a chord with its viewers and invites them to share with him the range of emotions that this kind of experience inspires.

A Dostoevsky-inspired black comedy that explores the life of Simon James, an isolated and socially awkward office clerk whose life is thrown into disarray by the arrival of James Simon. Apart from his physical appearance, James is the exact opposite of Simon, confident, witty and good with women. Simon, it seems, has no choice than to watch in horror as James rapidly destroys his own sense of identity.

May 2 - 5pm

Come and see this innovative pop-up food market run by the Cornish Food Box Company, on May 31st in Walsingham Place, Truro (behind Malletts). Meet the producers and sample some of Cornwall’s finest food & drink: local artisan beers, fresh fish, knife sharpening & lots more! The best thing about buying locally is that you’re supporting small businesses who in turn help our rural economy. At the same time you reduce food miles and packaging. It’s also affordable - all our price comparisons show there is no difference in an average basket than with the supermarket for comparable stuff. Walsingham Place, Truro. Tel: 01872 858 343

World Pilot Gig Championships Isles of Scilly Gig Rowing - £35 registration fee Come to the World Pilot Gig Championships, on the first bank holiday weekend in May, and see over 120 gigs and 2,000 rowers descend on the islands for three furious days of racing. The weekend is the highlight of the gig racing calendar and also the first major event of the season. Pilot gigs are 32 feet long and made from wood; they are rowed by six fixed-seat rowers and helmed by a cox. Gig racing originated in Cornwall when the boats used to race out to meet inbound ships, hoping to get their own pilot onboard and win the contract to bring the ship into harbour. Today it is one of the fastest growing sports in Cornwall.

Smuggling Falmouth Exhibition Be immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the heyday of smuggling in the 18th to early 19th centuries in this multisensory exhibition for all ages. Exquisite smuggling artefacts will take centre-stage, from an opium concealment loaned from the Border Force National Museum, to a tea chest from the mythical Cornish smuggling haunt, Jamaica Inn. One engaging exhibit encourages you to rummage inside smugglers’ barrels to identify their illicit cargo. By sniffing or touching the contents of various tubs, see if you can guess the contraband contained inside and then lift the lid to discover the truth. Lostwithiel, Community Centre

Every day Engine House Tours 11.30am, 2pm - £1.50/£3.00 The pumping engine at Robinson’s Shaft is a gloriously well-preserved example of a Cornish engine. It worked at this site between 1903 and 1955. The engine was designed by Captain Samuel Grose, a pupil of Richard Trevithick, and was built by Sandys Vivian and Co. at the Copperhouse Foundry. One of the two major engineering works at Hayle.

Saturday 3rd - Monday 5th May Spring Steam Spectacular The Bulleid is Back! Steam Engines Spring Steam Spectacular celebrates steam in all shapes and sizes.

Robinson’s Engine is currently undergoing more restoration work (it’s a bit like painting the Forth Bridge), but you can still go on guided tours to see this magnificent engine.

Outside of school holidays, Engine House tours are once a day, Oct - Mar at 2.00pm, and twice a day April - Sept at 11.30am and 2pm. Please book your space on the tour at the Visitor Centre on arrival at Heartlands. Please note there are only 12 spaces per tour and a small fee applies.

Pool, Robinson’s Engine House

The exhibition runs from Easter to 30th June and will be inspired by the soldiers on the memorial cross in St Germans and will also include items at Port Eliot from John Granville Eliot, whose bravery in WW1 was recognised by receiving the Military Cross. The exhibition will also look at the many other soldiers in the local area who died in the war. On display will be a unique glimpse of the social history of both Port Eliot and the local villages during this period – including the role of women. St Germans Primary School will also be growing about 1,000 oak tree saplings, which in two to three years time will be planted at Port Eliot, towards the end of the commemoration of WW1. A wonderful reminder in years to come for these young children and the local community on what that generation did for us.

Widgets Show a list of upcoming events on your website using our event widget. What’s a widget? It’s free tool we have built that allows you to show events from our website, on your website.

How do I get one? Go to www.whatsoncornwall.co.uk/widget where you can build your own customised widget. This simple widget builder gives you some html code that you can then paste into to your website. The widget block will then appear in your website as you designed it and will always be up to date with upcoming events.

Is there a cost? No it’s FREE; anyone can build a widget for their website.

What’s the benefit for me? It allows you to add great content to your website, making it more relevant and engaging for your users. Also over half the visitors to Cornwall plan their holiday around some kind of event or festival - so if you’re an accommodation provider the widget gives you a great way to show how many events are in your local area and give prospective guests another reason to book with you.

44

www.whatsoncornwall.co.uk

/whatsoncornwall

Who’s using them? All sorts of businesses in Cornwall are embedding our widget in their website, for example: n A B&B owner in Falmouth could embed a list of the big 12 festivals in town and give people looking at her website another reason to book. n The local pub in Devoran could show a list of events coming up in the village and support the local community. n A hotel in Truro could show a list of upcoming shows at Hall For Cornwall to entice guests to stay with them and see a show.

Why did we create the Widget Builder? To give everyone in Cornwall an easy-to-use tool for promoting all the great events in Kernow on their website - and once you’ve embedded your widget we do all the hard work to keep it up to date.

SIMPLE 5-STAGE PROCESS 1. Go to www.whatsoncornwall.co.uk/widget 2. Choose what events you want to show - choose location, event type, venues and date range 3. Style your widget - choose the design, size, colour, font and headings 4. Play around until you are happy 5. Take the embed-code you’re given and drop it into the ‘What’s On’ page on your website That’s it! Your website will always be up to date with great events in Cornwall.

OVER 200 widgets embeded since January.
