PERSONAL STATEMENT As an architecture graduate and professional designer, I have gone through theoretical debates with full-time undergraduate study and obtained know-how skills from nearly 11-year project experience. However, it was years of practice that made me see the purpose of architecture design is to explore "how to coordinate architecture, urban space with living habits of residents in different cultural environments. " I was soon faced with a series of questions, "What is ideal public space?", "What is ideal urban environment for Chinese people?". To seek the answers, I apply for MArch Urban Design Programme at UCL. In fact, I had my initial contact with urban design in college, when I engaged in a research and design workshop for residence renovation and protection based on the field survey. Whereas, it was after my graduation (2008) when I had the chance to gain hands-on experience of various real-world urban complex projects. These experiences helped me identify the great differences between a large-scale urban complex and a single building, and they made urban design particularly appealing to me. However, when I reflect on the conditions of gigantic residential blocks and monumental skyscrapers in China, there is a tendency to build only self-reflective forms, without human identities. By doing so, it poses a risk overlooking certain places and things in daily life. The distinctive features of traditional Chinese settlements have been severely damaged, and most others look similar but lack regional vitality and urban memories. Moreover, urban design professionals are in short due to the lack of specialized and systematic research in China. These are the main reasons why I decide to pursue postgraduate education in UCL, where theoretical research of architecture, landscape and urban design practice tend to be mature compared with those in China. Regarding my hypothetical thesis, I would probably engage in one of the following themes: the future sustainable development of city community, high-density urban public space development and digital technologies on architecture and urbanism. Given an opportunity to study new urban design methods at UCL, I desire to absorb the essence of progressive concepts through exchange with brilliant minds. Meanwhile, I would love to share my work experience and insights gathered from China's commercial complex projects. I believe there will be amazing chemistry, when the knowledge of distinctive Chinese urban environment and western notions of modern urban design meet. Thank you for your consideration.

"New Ideas Need Old Buildings. _ Jane Jacobs" With expansion of urban population and building density, numerous buildings built in the last century are being torn down and the city is insteadly surrounded by highly populated residential area and isolated urban green area. However, old memories of urban space and features are disappearing. Wondering what kind of public space local citizens really need in their daily lives, the design is focused on resurrecting a decayed public symbol of 1920s' to early 21st century by preserving and renovating old buildings as well as adding new ones. 02

Background Introduction
Urbanization Process of Wuhan
Wuhan, one of the largest urban clusters in central China, has a long and rich history that dates back over 3,500 years. Due to its superior natural geographical conditions, Wuhan had become an important trading port city in central China during the period of Liu Song dynasty, with flourishing handicraft industry and commerce.
Wuhan, also known as the River City (Jiang Cheng), is situated at the junction of the Hanjiang and Yangtze Rivers, where waterfronts play an important role in its urban planning policy. Divided by the rivers, Wuhan is comprised of Wuchang, Hanyang and Hankou towns whose histories, scal e and rate of development are different.
The three-town co-existence develop-ment of Wuhan's outer spatial pattern was first formed at the end of Ming dynasty and the beginning of Qing dynasty. These days the rapid growth of popula-tion and urban expansion bring great pressure on transportation and require to build strong connections among the tree towns, Unfortunately, the urbanization of cities has posed a treat to heritage sites and sometimes the compromises have to be made.

Hankow Original Concession District In the early 20th century, Hankou had become a considerably large international metropolis known as "Oriental Chicago".
Hanzheng Street District In the late 1970's, it was one of the first parts of city where small entrepreneurs began trading. During that time, the unemployed and those with dubious backgrounds came to this narrow street and prospered.
Hankow Key Events Timeline 1861
The total length of Hankou Concession in Binjiang District is 1088 zhang, with the total area of 2804.4 mu. There have been many old and classic buildings of different countries in this area, which are the historical buildings left by the western powers from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. And now, they belong to the Major Sites Protected for their Historical and Cultural Value at the National Level.
After that, the concessions of France, Russia, Germany and Japan were established, which were distributed along the coastline of the Yangtze river for more than 3,600 meters.
1908
The market in the concession was separated from the inland by city wall. Foreign companies were built mostly along the river, with railway branch lines, convenient transportation and economic prosperity.
1927
Frequent wars have destroyed large areas of buildings and public facilities in the three towns of Wuhan. Much of the city wall was torn down and destroyed.
1937
The sovereignty of the concession area belonged to China. In order to repair the damage caused by the war, Sun Yat-sen proposed to revitalize the Wuhan industry, renovate the Yangtze river, build a central railway system, and put forward the plan of connecting the three towns with river tunnels and Yangtze river bridge.
1949
Hankow urban road traffic layout structure is the continuation of modern concession area road traffic structure layout.Until today, the formation of wuhan's urban spatial form is also influenced by the spatial pattern of hankow concession.
Wuchang Old City
Hanyong Old City The Hanyang Arsenal was one of the largest and oldest modern arsenals in Chinese history, known for its production of the so-called "Hanyang rifle" - an indigenous Asian copy of the German Model 1888 Commission Rifle.
Wuchang was established in the early years of the Three Kingdom Period. Old Wuchang had advanced handicraft industries, such as shipbuilding, metallurgy, coin minting as well as celadon and white porcelain manufacture.

04. Heritage Building: 8 Station Road Most of the heritage buildings on the site were abandoned. This is a Renaissance building, built in 1930, and its exterior walls are made of red brick and fair-faced concrete, adecorated with fine brick carvings.
01. Tukunshan Mansion Built in 1917, this mansion was belonged to Tukunshan, a comprador of Asia trading corporation in China, and currently it is a site of cultural relics protection in Wuhan. Its internal facilities and items are donated by the family and later repaired.

Brick Wall Fence
Public Feedbacks Gathered Through Field Investigation I have been living in this lane for more than 60 years and saw a huge change in this area!
New public park or community center should demonstrate our local culture!!!
05. Brick Wall Fence There is no public green space nearby, and I always have to go to the riverfront park with my little grandson. I hope we can have more and more community space which also provide an educational value. We grew up in Wuhan. The Hankow original concession and all the historical heritage affect our life.
The site is randomly divided by the brick wall fence into independent courtyards, with no connection between them.

03. Conserve the selected exterior walls, internal structure of the abandoned buildings and fence
04. Generate a semi-outdoor public place by adding glass canopy on top and wood brackets to support it x 54
x115
05. Reuse the old bricks of the abandoned building to create a set of landscape elements, such as water walls, statuary art and outdoor seating
06. Establish a mechanical parking facility covered with plants of green foliage in order to improve the current situation of casual parking
07. Maximally conserve the vegetation on the site and partially transplant the street trees to recreate the vibrant urban space
08. Add a patterned change of brick paving to combine the landscape joints
Perspective View from Station Road
Night View from Station Road The semi-outdoor community square is an open-air city museum. Surrounding residents and tourists would spontaneously gather to stay for a while, where the old memory of the city might become the topic of a conversation. In the evenings, a short historical video about the city would be shown and the dwellers would witness the renewal of the city in a different way. 05
The design concept proposes to retain the spatial experience of original heritage buildings and landscape spatial order of the site to the greatest extent, and re-create an open and vibrant community public plaze through rational planning and reutilization of the architectural elements.

The House
By Wu Guanzhong
As a eminent painter born and raised in the canal town of south China, Wu Guanzhong is adept at using the simplest forms of dots, lines, surfaces and colors to describe life of small canal town, which are full of the poetry and verve of Chinese culture. The design is inspired by the oil painting of Mr. Wu and attempts to combine traditional architectural elements with the modern shared space to restore a pleasant spatial experience of urban environments.

Design Idea and Development
STEP 9: Creating shared habitat by the open courtyard, significant building massing and the floating landscape box
STEP 7: Floating Courtyard
STEP 8: Establishing spatial order
The design concept borrows from the enclosed architectural form of traditional Chinese courtyard house, and derives from the deformation a sense of suspension and openness on the traditional spatial pattern, creating an ecological, open and safe place. Meanwhile, it propses to provide a new spatial experience of "floating courtyard" by adding colored landscape boxes.
Program and Social Role The project, supported by the local government and property developers, consists of a primary school of 48 classes and a junior high school of 56 classes. The project starts by thinking about how schools can be places for students' spiritual growth instead of traditional teaching spaces. The design attempts to extract architectural elements from the urban environment that students are familiar with and create diversified spatial experiences according to the functional requirements of campus life.

"Color is an illusion, but not an unfounded illusion. _ C.L. Hardin" In architecture, color should be considered as an instrument of design, as a system for creating form and organizing space. The use of campus space is not only in the teaching space, but also in the space without clearly defined functions. The floating landscape boxes and shared classrooms placed in random locations are positioned as part of shared habit and are displayed in different colors. Compared with traditional white walls and black tiles, these brightly colored spaces symbolize a new spirit of freedom, creation and sustainability.

The national economic and technological development zone is a modern industrial and industrial park set up in mainland China to implement the policy of reform and opening up. Relying on the Ningbo Hangzhou Bay cross-sea bridge, the planned crosssea channel, the expressway, the inter-city railway and other large-scale transportation facilities, the new zone can directly develop with Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo to achieve urban integration development. Under such a background, this project is based on the continuous reflection and exploration of local conditions and natural resources to create an unreplicable urban spectacle and a new way of life suitable for all seasons. 13

The project is located at the CBD of Baiyun New Town. Baiyun New Town is in the south of Huang Shi Road, east of Airport Highway, north of Bei Huang Highway and west of Baiyun Avenue. The total planning area of district is about 9.22 square kilometers and its central district is between the east and west runway of the old Baiyun airport.

Site Context Adapt to Local Condition Baiyun Mountain has long been known as the "First Spectacular Scene of Ram City". At the top of the mountain, one can get a panoramic view of Guangzhou downtown and Pearl river afar. After rainfall or in later spring, the view is more magnificent with white fog or clouds afloat around. Thanks to the special location, the designer attempts to break the routine practice and design a distinctive super high-rise: the single tower stands towards Baiyun Mountain, enabling residents to enjoy the beautiful mountain view. By "embedding windows into clouds", the design realizes the integration of space, balance and dynamism, recreating the image in a Chinese ancient poem, "Among hills smoke rises, peeking the setting sun through bamboos. Towards the roof birds fly, in window clouds emerge".

Customized Design Placed in the north of the site, the tower is designed with flexible and efficient rectangle plan, which organically connects the headquarter office and the serviced apartments as one. 3D multilayer massing helps to inspire volume composition, forming a grand and powerful architectural form. The tower's layout sticks to the edge of its setback line so as to gain the maximum face width. The distinctive layout highlights the image of the main body of the tower, distinguishing it from adjacent tower buildings.
The shape of podium buildings coordinates with the tower: at the diagonal direction of the tower, the U-shape layout automatically forms a centripetal courtyard. The concept of "Lingnan Garden", is also introduced by mixing elements like detached building, abat-vent, arcade, veranda, central courtyard, brings visitors an unique architectural complex experience.Furthermore, when maintaining the best natural view, designers build an excellent ecological circle that integrates innovation and intelligence.

The 2nd Floor(5mL&7.5mL) In the west side of the second floor, an 8m-wide 24-hour pedestrian corridor not only connects buildings in the north and west, but also serves as a part of the commercial verandah, composing a centripetal square-shape concourse. In the north side, there is a set of outdoor escalator and stair connecting with the stream of people from downstairs office and serviced apartment lobbies. The 4th Floor(15mL) The sightseeing elevators and emergency staircases outdoor lead to a garden platform on the fourth floor of a podium building. Diverse elevations, open platform on the roof, garden-like vertical greening and outdoor kiosk create an open, green, casual garden-like business community.
Typical Floor Plan and Refuge Floor Plan, Overhead Club(L25,86.2M) The east wing above the fourth floor is designed for apartment and the west wing for office. The skywalk and overhead club are the highlights of the tower. The overhead club, sandwiched between the 25th floor and the refuge floor, is composed of a 25m-long, 6m-wide glass-bottomed swimming pool whose one end is suspending in the air. The design utilizes the height difference between the refuge floor and mezzamine floor to build closely connected M/E room. According to the floor plan, the protruding glass box of the headquarter tower is designed for the CEO office, VIP meeting room and other important functions. Here, one can overlook the scenic zone of Baiyun Mountain and panoramic view of the city.

Structure Design Frame-core wall and shear wall structure system are mainly adopted in tower building construction and frame structure system is used in business podium and basement, which constitute a highly efficient and economic structure system. The seismic precautionary intensity of the area is 7 degree (the design basic seismic acceleration is 6.10g and the design characteristic period of ground motion is 0.35s ). Its seismic protection category is Class C, and the connecting frame beam and jointing component of rigid connection are classified as supreme grade one. For the economy and stability of the whole structure, structural joints are placed in the two junctions of tower building and podium buildings in the east and west. Steel bracket sliding supports are installed in one side of the overhead platform at the lower section of the tower (the vertical bearing capacity is 800kN, longitudinal displacement is Âą50mm and lateral displacement is Âą50mm).

Lighting Design The element "water" is employed as a carrier in lighting and "window of white clouds" as its source. LED screen and laser projection lights are used on some sections of the major tower. High-tech lighting design creates a splendid "cascade" of light, making the whole project more visible at night. As a part of the skyline of Baiyun New Town, this project will give customers a wider view of the main building facade, showing the building's upright temperament, rigorous and dignified visual experience. At the same time, it can combine the tower and podium buildings to form an overall display of the whole project, and it also displays the commercial atmosphere of the podium building.
Landscape Design The landscape design creates a view that organically blends straight lines from the building and curves from surrounding urban rivers. On the sunken plaza, a landscape sculpture -- "a frozen drop from the overhead swimming pool", together with the green belt on the wayside, constitute a central green land with humanistic care, which improves interior environment of the commercial square by providing an ideal space for rest, entertainment and communication. Some landscape elements also can be seen in the overhead club and sky pool, which make it look like a hidden blue-green fairyland floating in the air from the angle of the main road of Baiyun New Town.

environment and surrounding architecture, the facade design of office building has to meet requirements of various factors, such as the function of a single building, corporate image, city skyline, etc.
Reference:
New concepts at work place also push forward the evolution of office building design, particularly in terms of public space design. However, architects should not just focus on the innovation and trend, but also consider individual psychological needs, such as requirements for public space, natural lighting and ventilation, outdoor urban view, publicity and privacy, sustainability. Efforts to satisfy these needs will boost further progress and evolution of public architecture.
