Welland CANAL
Port Colborne and the Welland Canal share a closely entwined history with one another. Port Colborne was established as a settlement when the Welland Canal was extended from Port Robinson to Lake Erie in 1833. The presence of the canal through the middle of the community has shaped the local economy. To this day, some of Port Colborne’s major businesses rely on the canal for cargo movement. Port Colborne is the only location along the Welland Canal to follow the original canal route. Visitors can see remnants of earlier canals right next to modern ships or check out the Clarence St. Lift Bridge, one of three remaining lift bridges operating on the
Welland Canal. View walls of the old guard locks from the second and third Welland Canals and abutments of a swing bridge that once crossed the canal. The Port Promenade (along the side of the Welland Canal) is an excellent place to watch ships pass into Lake Erie, or visit Lock 8 Gateway Park to see ships from an elevated viewing platform as they pass through the southernmost lock on the Welland Canal and the second longest canal lock in the world! The Lock 8 Gateway Park also features a uniquely designed “Algoport” Skate & BMX Park which has been styled to resemble a freight ship. Visit www.niagarawellandcanal.com

ARABELLA’S TEA ROOM ON THE GROUNDS OF THE PORT COLBORNE HISTORICAL & MARINE MUSEUM Arabella’s Tea Room began in 1977 with the formation of a Museum Auxiliary willing to operate a tea room on a volunteer basis. Arabella’s Tea Room was originally a small house, built in 1915, as a rental home on the Williams Estate. Arabella Williams lived in the main house which is now the Museum. The little rental house was deemed to be the perfect location for a tea room, and after much research, it was Dec.ided that an Edwardian Era theme for afternoon tea would be ideal in creating an authentic atmosphere. All aspects of the tea room were planned in the Edwardian style. After several months of restoration and deliberation, Arabella’s Tea Room was officially opened. Lieutenant-Governor Pauline McGibbon cut the opening ribbon, held by Florence Neff Young and H. H. Knoll, on July 1st, 1978. We are grateful for the time and dedication of Arabella’s Tea Room volunteers. They are warm and friendly ambassadors of Port Colborne. Please join us for pleasant relaxing experience with homemade tea biscuits, jam, tea, coffee, lemonade, and ice tea in an Edwardian setting. Arabella’s Tea Room is open 2-4 daily June 1st to Sept. 30th. For large groups please call for booking 905-834-7604. Arabella’s Tea Room open from June 1st to Sept. 30 2 - 4 daily excluding some Holidays $5 includes two tea biscuits and a beverage Telephone 905-834-7604 Email museum@portcolborne.ca Twitter @ArabellaTeaRoom Facebook www.facebook.com/Arabellas-Tea-Room

HISTORICAL AND HERITAGE TOURS Heritage Guides The Historic Port Colborne – A Pictorial Guide to Port Colborne’s Heritage Buildings and Sites features 36 properties to guide readers in learning about the people, landscapes, and historic buildings that bring Port Colborne’s neighbourhoods to life. The Historic Welland Canal Guide highlights 11 historical locations along the Welland Canal. It features the importance of the canal to our city and showcases the city’s favourite locations to view the ships travelling to or from Lake Erie. Copies of both guides are available at the Port Colborne Visitor Information Centre at 76 Main St. and at City Hall at 66 Charlotte St., local attractions, and online at www.portcolborne.ca Tennessee Ave. Originally established in 1889 as the Humberstone Club or “Solid Comfort,” the lakefront homes of Tennessee Ave. are reminiscent of the American South. In 1903, Mrs. Varina Davis, wife of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, wrote “A Legend, The Grasshopper War”
while visiting friends with summer residences on Tennessee Ave. (copies of A Legend, The Grasshopper War are viewable at the Port Colborne Public Library). The gated entrance to Tennessee Ave. is located off Sugarloaf St., slightly west of the intersection of Sugarloaf St. and Steele St. The Incredible Shrinking Mill The “Incredible Shrinking Mill” is a strange phenomenon produced by interplay of light, shoreline, water, and trees. The closer you get the smaller it appears. Take Cement Rd., located at the western edge of Port Colborne, from Hwy. 3 south to Lakeshore Rd., turn left (east), and look straight ahead towards Gravelly Bay. The mill looks almost close enough to touch, but as you approach the water, the mill appears to shrink. Fishing in Port Colborne is an amazing experience, offering year-round, worldclass sport fishing. With access to Lake Erie and the Upper Niagara River, Port Colborne offers beautiful scenery and excellent fishing. Well known for its trophy fish: Trout, Walleye and Bass, the Upper Niagara River provides some of the best Bass fishing from June to Nov.. Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes in volume, measures 241 miles across and 57 miles from north to south, with a depth of 62 feet. Because it warms rapidly in the spring and summer and
freezes frequently in the winter, Lake Erie is an ideal location to catch the Spring and Fall Salmon and Trout Run. Lake Erie is recognized as one of the province’s best fishing spots for Perch but anglers have a variety of options, as Walleye, Salmon and Trout are also thriving in Lake Erie. Port Colborne’s waterways are world renowned. Big names like Bob Izumi love to fish these waters, as do tournaments like the 444 International Walleye Tournament, the Can-Am Invitational, Berkley B1 Tournament and the past Pro Am bass tournament to name a few.
ICE FISHING
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO CATCH IN LAKE ERIE?

From Jan. 1 to Mar 15, anglers can venture out on the ice (ice conditions permitting) and drop their lines for Yellow Perch, Lake Trout, tasty Whitefish and feisty Northern Pike. Ice fishing in Gravelly Bay has long been popular, as well. Gravelly Bay is typically frozen for several months every winter.

At the height of the summer, the entire city takes time to celebrate the reasons why our picturesque city has grown and prospered - our marine heritage and our connection to the St. Lawrence Seaway and the seafaring world at large. Each year more than 400,000 people visit the festival over four days. The festival encompasses the entire community, with activities at a dozen different venues: H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park hosts Ontario’s Largest outdoor Classic Car and International kite show. The Seaway Park Kid’s Zone has games, entertainment and kid’s activities throughout the weekend. At the Port Colborne Historical & Marine Museum and Heritage Village the history of the Canal is on display, and heritage artisans can be seen working their trade. Enjoy an afternoon of jazz on Saturday at the Roselawn Centre. Festival guests can ride the free Canal Days shuttle to the Vale Health & Wellness Centre where the indoor Craft Show is held. Festival food and shopping kiosks fill historic West St. while vessels gather along the Canal wall. Sugarloaf Marina welcomes boaters and lighthouse tours are offered. The Market Square concert venue features top notch entertainment nightly. 2017 Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival will once again feature celebratory fireworks to light the sky on Sunday night.
