1. BROCKVILLE RAILWAY TUNNEL Built in 1860, Canada’s first Rail Tunnel was used to connect the waterfront by rail for 110 years. Now it has a comfortable walking surface and an incredible sound and light show for the entire length of the half kilometer (1753’) tunnel. Water seeping through the walls has created beautiful formations of white calcite and yellow dolomite, and the stalactites grow about 1 mm (.04”) per year. Photo courtesy George Fischer.

4. AQUATARIUM The AQUATARIUM showcases the wonders of the River and the Thousand Islands Region in a captivating and enriching manner that is sure to inspire your curiosity! Imaginative exhibit designs and live animals are combined with innovative interactive technologies to entertain children and adults alike!

5. FULFORD PLACE Walk the same halls as royalty! This magnificent 20,000-square-foot mansion was built in 1899 for self-made millionaire George Taylor Fulford. The gardens were designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Olmsted of Central Park (NYC) fame.
6. MAC JOHNSON WILDLIFE AREA Known locally as the “The Back Pond” this 532 hectare (1300+ acre) conservation area includes wetlands, fields and forests with 11 kilometers (almost 7 miles) of trails for hiking and cross country skiing. Amenities include barbecues, a picnic shelter, accessible washroom and canoe launch.
7. SCUBA DIVING Experience Canada’s first underwater sculpture park at CENTEEN PARK. The unique sculptures are created by local artists and funded by the local SAVE ONTARIO SHIPWRECK (SOS) chapter in Brockville. Walk, jog, bike, blade or roll on this 7km (4.3 miles) trail which runs through the City’s spectacular waterfront and scenic green space.
No visit to the 1000 Islands is complete without a river cruise. Castles, mansions, and lighthouses are abound as you cruise down the river. Make your choice based on your preferences; time of day, length of the cruise and starting location. SINGER CASTLE, DARK ISLAND, USA

10. THE BROCKVILLE ISLANDS Life is amazing in the 1000 Island Region year round – just ask any local. Having access to the river and the islands makes life here pretty sweet. There are 15 publicly owned islands on the shores of Brockville available for picnicking and camping from early spring to fall. There are docks for day use, overnight and seasonal moorings plus 4 paddle-in campsites for kayaks and canoes.

The “Wild & THe Wet” trip
Take your bathing suits!
Start the day with traditional English breakfast at COSIE’S TEAROOM on King Street. While you eat challenge the kids to find ‘Sally Grant’ on the roof of the neo-classical Courthouse building. She’ll be watching you eat through the window!
BROCKVILLE MUSEUM
Next, head to the BROCKVILLE MUSEUM at 5 Henry Street – they have special programming in the summer and interactive exhibits for the kids. Have a swim at the sandy beach in ST. LAWRENCE PARK. Stop for lunch at BUD’S ON THE BAY. Don’t let the kids miss the “Cup of Dirt” for dessert - let’s just say gummy worms are involved! Spend the afternoon at the AQUATARIUM at Tall Ships Landing. Try the touch tank if you’ve always wanted to pat a starfish, make a live news report, have a rowing challenge or try the ropes course. Make sure you have a few hours – watching the otters being fed is a must and it only happens a few times a day.

On the weekends enjoy a pancake breakfast with GIBBONS MAPLE SYRUP at THE GEORGIAN DRAGON ALE HOUSE AND PUB on King Street. Then head north to Frankville to the GIBBONS FAMILY FARM. It’s about a 20 minute drive and is open year round from 9 to 4. Tour the sugar house and enjoy free tastings!
Discover FORT WELLINGTON, only 20 minutes west of Brockville on County Road 2. Experience how the soldiers and their families lived in the 1840’s. Kids of all ages will see the history literally come alive in front of their eyes. There are guided tours, cannon firings, and historic re-enactments, and the Visitor Centre boasts a rare 1812 era gunboat wreck.

Enjoy the outdoors just a few minutes north in Brockville at the MAC JOHNSON WILDLIFE AREA. It is 532 hectares (1300 acres) of wetland, field and forest. Known locally as the “Back Pond”, there are plenty of trails to walk, and in the winter you can cross country ski on the trails and skate on the pond. If you have the family dog with you this is also a perfect place to enjoy. There are picnic tables, so bring a boxed lunch and enjoy a day with the wildlife.
Head out first thing on foot, or jump on a bike tour with THOUSAND ISLAND BICYCLE CO. to explore the waterfront. The Brock trail takes you to the BROCKVILLE RAIL TUNNEL and over to BLOCKHOUSE ISLAND where you can hop on a cruise or have an ice cream cone.

Have some fun at the ROTARY PARK SPLASH PAD, or spend some time on the Pump Track. Stop and relax awhile at the BROCKVILLE LIBRARY where the kids can play Virtual Reality games. Ask Brockville Tourism for a free pass to check out books or bikes from the library to enjoy while in Brockville. Stop at BOSTON PIZZA for dinner. The kids might enjoy the Bugs’ n’ Cheese, an interesting variation on mac and cheese with bug-shaped pasta.

“It is easier and causes less damage to hold onto a cement sculpture or an aluminum frame, than to hold on to a 200-year-old wooden shipwreck that has historical significance and that we want to maintain.” Tom Scott is the chair of the Thousand Islands chapter of Save Ontario Shipwrecks. This organization helped create an underwater sculpture park in Brockville to combat deterioration of the shipwrecks in the area. Today the park is a popular spot for divers in training.

FORT WELLINGTON National Historic Site
Lieu historique national du Fort-Wellington Explore Canada’s largest blockhouse, which looks like it did in 1846, when the Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment (RCRR) was in garrison there. Discover how the soldiers and their families lived back then, visit the barracks, the powder magazine and the officer’s quarters. Watch a rifle demonstration, cook with costumed interpreters, fire a 19th century muzzle-loading cannon and see the history come alive. The visitor centre also showcases a rare 1812era gunboat wreck.
