TODAYSART EXHIBITION: “BUBBLE VISIONS” ‘
‘Bubble vision is a way to adapt humans to a world where they are invariably missing’ Hito Steyerl
THE GREY SPACE

21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS Stolen from Hito Steyerl’s lecture of the same name, the idea of Bubble Vision is born out of immersive technologies like 360° videos and virtual reality—spherical views. These technologies are based on a strange paradox where, according to Steyerl, “the viewer is at the centre of a sphere, yet at the same time he/she is missing. They are fully immersed in something they are not part of. Not only your head, but also your hands and feet are invisible – a blind spot in the centre.” Bubble vision acts as a crystal ball that predicts a future state where you are missing—as Steyerl notes, “to be eliminated means to be automated. And conversely to be automated means to be eliminated” But when we look at the crystal ball do we see more than a data ‘selfie’? This spherical vision connects to the ‘filter bubbles’ on social media, which envelop us in their parallel information universes. Can we look beyond our own bubbles, beyond their coherent narratives, towards the places we avoid out of fear, unwillingness, or
difference of ideology. Can we look beyond the bubble(s) to a possible future in which technology and people increasingly cooperate and merge. Bubbles consist of specific (views on) parts of information. At the same time, information is increasingly liquid—continuously changing content, sender, and shape. This interchangeability of form generates power and an immense speed of circulation, creating an uncontrollable, ungraspable, and ever-growing beast—a beast that is fed by the feedback loops of algorithmic systems and human input. 21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS feedback loops of algorithmic systems and human input. How are artists relating to the bubble vision paradigm, feedback loops and automation? The artists in the TodaysArt 2018 exhibition present the parallel realities in which people and technology are simultaneously feeding off, augmenting, and fusing with, one another. What (speculative) scenarios do they present us with? Do they shape their own bubble visions? Or try to escape entirely from this paradigm? In this contemporary landscape questions emerge about how public opinion is influenced by click farms, how automated our ICT production flows are, and the relationship between people and automation. In Isabel Mager’s 5000times, she unveils how the robotic production processes in the creation of iPhones still consist of hundreds of manual operations, hundreds of infiltrations of the human hand within robotic automation—evoking a middle-ground in Steyerl’s equation
of automation and elimination. Arvid & Marie’s interactive work plays with the dissolving boundaries between man and machine; with human interpreters for intelligent programs becoming the ‘last job on earth’. The exhibition presents multiple realities through speculative scenarios. Riley Harmon wants to challenge his audience to think about their own reality—a reality that is fed by media, the internet and a world where everyone has their own truth. In Harmon’s latest episode within the terror management trilogy he tries to get a grip on that world and to make us aware of its complexity. With an installation centred around a body-measuring massage chair, artist Emmeline de Mooij created slime videos with a soothing voice-over to examine a lost unity between man and his surroundings. Students of ArtEZ speculated on a parallel reality by choosing a specific moment from their year of birth, changing the facts of that moment, and seeing what the consequences could be.

21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS In his lecture-performance, Rabih Mroué uses images of violence, the mechanisms around martyrdom worship, and political propaganda to create works that question how images and stories are constructed and instrumentalised—from the ‘bubbles’ of the Arab world against the Western ones. And Yamuna Forzani punctures the bubble of public space, initiating a queer utopian Vogue Kiki function where people are allowed to self-narrate their bodies, staying true to the theme of the pineapple:
reflection of the self in the crystal ball. To embrace multiplicity, to carry two opposing ideas simultaneously, to fracture the shiny veneer of Bubble Vision.
Be like a pineapple; stand tall wear a crown be sweet on the inside Bubble vision is not a singularity, but rather a multitude of local and global bubbles; the ‘glass globes’ of today. Extending from last year’s theme of algorithmic complexity, we want to continue to move away from dichotomies, away from utopian or dystopian thinking; away from the

21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS Guy Ben-Ary/Nathan Thompson/ Andrew Fitch/Darren Moore – cellF The world’s first neural analogue synthesizer: a rock star alter-ego in a petri dish. An actual neural network bio-engineered from the artist’s very own skin cells, and an array of analogue modu- lar synthesizers perform a digital self-portrait.
Kyle McDonald & Jonas Jongejan – Light Leaks One dark room, three projectors, 50 disco balls and a healthy dose of well-planned lighting sequences teleport festival visitors to a magical world of light particles showers.
Emmeline de Mooij – Poging tot een Dutje (Attempting a Nap) De Mooij outlines speculative scenarios through which she examines the lost unity between man and his surroundings in this installation centered around a body-measuring massage chair in which you can watch her own ASMR slime videos with a soothing voice-over.
David Neevel – Telephone Operator FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, is commonly known and experienced by people who are on social media a lot. Telephone Operator is designed to thread the needle between these modern fears by allowing one to stay offline, while at the same appearing very active online.
THE GREY SPACE
21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS David Neevel – @burnedyourtweet A robot programmed to check Twitter every few seconds to see if Donald Trump has tweeted yet. When it finds a new one, it automatically sets it on fire, films itself, and retweets the video as a response to the original tweet. According to the artist, the machine provides a way of delivering this appropriate response without requiring a human to “actually read anything that toxic.”
Isabel Mager ‘5000times’ / Input = Output ‘5000times’ materialises an in- vestigation into invisible forms of labour in ICT production chains. In Mager’s new installation ‘Input = Output’ an automated video interview is being conducted in dialogue with mock-up software as AI is increasingly being used within recruitment operations.
Riley Harmon – The Firewall Grove (2017/18) Harmon presents the second film in his terror management trilogy, wherein a small sect has locked themselves inside a compound to get shelter from an ambiguous attack happening outside. Objects and episodes from this film are displayed alongside the live editing of a live event based on the 1962 Ionesco play Exit the King that was broadcast live to the Internet. Riley Harmon weaves truth, fiction and magical realism into works and narratives that offer an uncanny distorted mirror to our reality.
THE GREY SPACE
21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS Milda Vysniauskaite Mimosa Pudica Can an installation have its own character, and can the audience show compassion, or even empathy, towards it? Through her interactive work, recent KABK graduate Milda Vysniauskaite is asking these questions.
kunrad – Technology Imitates Nature I: Rainfall In a world where smartphones, tablets, and other modern technologies take over, we tend to disconnect ourselves from the outside world. kunrad tries to make us more aware of our- selves and our surroundings by altering machines into intriguing instruments that interact with each other.
Yoshinari Nishiki – Overture: Carrying Power (Intervention on saturday) 20+ Deliveroo drivers will take part in this public intervention by Japanese artist Yoshinari Nishiki (Inari Wishiki), currently artist-in-residence at The Grey Space. The drivers will attempt to move a mountain of potatoes together accompanied by a sound piece by electronic composer Kepla (aka Jon Davies).
Miloš Trakilović – XYZ XYZ problematizes the present-day interpretation of data through visualization. In this work, the human voice gets singled out as the interface that echoes in vain search for responsiveness. The video is structured as an online tutorial that questions standard modes of communication in an information age.
THE GREY SPACE
21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS Arvid and Marie – The Last Job on Earth “In the speculative performanceinstallation, visitors interact with ‘interpreters for intelligent programs’. Flaws and misinterpretations between the AI oracle and the receiver take place and the boundaries between man and machine are dissolving.”
Rachel Maclean – It’s Whats Inside That Counts In a dystopian metropolis fuelled by fevered connectivity, a race of rodents beneath the decaying streets hack the sales messages of a Kardashian-type demigod. The figures in this film are seen to share in and compete for attention within a forever connected, corrupt, caffeine marinaded environment.
Anja Groten – Face the InterFace On a daily basis, our faces are being detected, recognized, flagged, filtered, swiped, targeted and possibly even criminalized. This smart mirror project proposes to reimagine the role of our face in the digital realm— recognizing facial expressions and altering the storyline it is telling by merely looking at it.
Salim Bayri – Smartshop Kaaskoes Bayri takes notes of his surroundings by drawing 3D models he collects in a virtual ‘smart- shop’: from a sculpture he saw in a museum to a food kit for couscous his faraway grandma might disapprove of. Bayri mixes different distances and degrees of virtuality while, at the end of the day, there is nothing to eat.
THE GREY SPACE
21-23 SEPT BUBBLE VISIONS Yamuna Forzani Intervention and Vogue kiki event This Pineapple Kiki function is thematically celebrating tropical fruits in all their juiciness. Yamuna does not want to label herself as an artist, but rather as a ‘queer activist’, aiming to create and live a ‘queer utopia where people are allowed to self narrate their bodies’. A collaboration with HangOut070.
ArtEZ Diegetic Interface Project initiated by Daan van Dijk, with Deborah Mora, Michelle Feelders, Sebi Clotas Jucgla, Elise Bodt, Ties van Asseldonk, Jolie van Wijngaarden, and Yamil Oulad El Hadj These students from the Interaction Design department at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem explore parallel worlds through speculative design and design fiction. The projects alter the facts and outcomes of a specific event in the year in which the student was born. The students took their newly created alternative realities as a starting point and used the medium of an interface as a common denominator.

21-22 SEPT WORKS Philip Vermeulen – Flap Flap A stick moves up and down which makes a canvas of gigantic dimensions flutter, creating stroboscopic, hypnotic patterns as the square structure pulls and releases the canvas from each corner.
Philip Vermeulen – Int / Ext This work experiments with the littlest amount of light possible, letting the audience experience after-images; highly subjective visual phenomena. By doing so, Int / Ext fades the border between the original stimulus, which was there in reality, and what the viewer’s brain forms internally.
THEATER A/H SPUI
21-22 SEPT WORKS Bernhard Breuer & Florian Nitsch – Virtually Impossible (VR installation) A drummer and a visual artist occupy a space and visually and acoustically represent an abstract binary code in the room. The space is changing acoustically and visually, constantly getting louder, brighter, fuller and more chaotic. (IN COLLAB. WITH SOUND:FRAME AND WIRTSCHAFTSAGENTUR WIEN)
DEPART – The Lacuna Shifts Loosely inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, The Lacuna Shifts combines sound, text and imagery into an alternate surreality in the form of a volatile room. Disembodied, the viewer’s gaze becomes the only instrument of connecting to this space – it leaves traces, activates and builds structures.
Sascha Mann, Sebastian Brauneis, Stefanie Schmitt and Stefan Horninger – Inside Lieutenant Gustl (VR installation) Theatre in the virtual space takes us closer to the action than the actual stage ever could. ‘Inside Lieutenant Gustl’ is a virtual theatre project designed to convey a first-hand experience of an Austrian lieutenant’s stream of consciousness at the turn of the 20th century. Hackers & Designers – Nobodies-for.bots From the Turing Test to the Amazon Mechanical Turk, role-playing has represented a significant force in furthering the ideology of technological innovation.Nobodies-for. bots is a quick and dirty workshop by Hackers and Designers, where participants are put inside a thriller-scenario and must play it out with the other participants: humans and bots alike. This is an exploration in reality-making and collective-being in a pan-usership and truths-rich era. The workshop kicks off with simple role play exercises to develop the characters and set the scene. Participants will plug in their own text lines into the bots’ code as part of co-character and plot development that will unfold IRL via the messaging application Telegram. Then we play out the narrative, making a collective and kaleidoscopic story with characters that reflect upon decision making amongst new kinds of kin.
This workshop is led by André Fincato, Cristina Cochior, and Genevieve Costello of Hackers & Designers, an Amsterdam-based collective that brings together two professions in order to build a common vocabulary. H&D privileges a hands-on approach to making in order to understand how technologies work. SAT-22 SEPT Bleyenberg/Floor 1 14:00-18:30

Modular Synthesizer Ensemble with Gammon The Modular Synthesizer Ensemble puts its focus on a collective musical experience. Led by Gammon, who has been working with the Modular Synthesizer since the 1990s and is active in the field of music and art education, this hands-on participatory workshop teaches basic knowledge about electronic sound production and composition. The workshop enables an intuitive approach to the analogue Modular Synthesizer and makes electronic music tangible and comprehensible, even if you have no previous knowledge. The first part of the workshop will guide you through the functional principle of the instrument and demystify electronic sound generation, followed by an individual task to patch and create your own sounds autonomously. These individual tasks around sound design are then merged into a more musical
approach that leads towards the creation of a composition together as an ensemble and rehearsing for a live presentation. The 12 Modular Synthesizers are individual instruments, based on subtractive synthesis and equipped with a wide range of possibilities, such as Wave Shaping, Frequency Modulation, Cross Modulation, Sampling, Sequencing and even a focus on acoustic sound sources. Because of its unique musical and social acoustic experience, the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble enables a similar challenge to experienced musicians, modular enthusiasts or people with no previous knowledge.
