GOWN SHOPPING

2

Q

When should I start my gown shopping?

A

Nine to twelve months before your wedding is an ideal time for shopping as it’s best to have about six months to spare for fittings and (sometimes multiple) alterations. If you have less than six months to work with, start shopping right away!

Q

How can I prepare for my first gown shopping experience?

A

You’ll want to start by looking at magazines, bridal websites, and yes, Pinterest to get an idea of what you’re drawn to in terms of style, shape, and attitude. Be sure to bring those photos to your first appointment; the overall feel — romantic,

portantly – you’ll need to have a budget in mind. Most brides spend about 10% of their overall wedding budget on their dress, but consider this a starting point. You may need to stick to a hard-and-fast number, but you may also be able to increase your gown spending and scale back in other places.

Q

Where should I go?

A

Chances are you have a ton of fabulous bridal shops right in your own backyard! If you have specific designers in mind, find out which local stores carry them. Our vendor profiles on TodaysBride.com can help you narrow down your list! Before you shop, you might like to check out reviews for your potential shops, as well as take notes on whether they advertise in any major bridal magazines, wedding shows, or TODAY’S BRIDE

local publications. Advertising displays a commitment to their business and usually means they’ll be here tomorrow to deliver on the promises they made today. Try to limit your gown shopping to three or four different salons, as it’s easy to forget which gowns you tried on where. Most places don’t operate on a walk-in basis so be sure to call ahead for an appointment at least two weeks in advance.

Q

Who should I bring with me?

5

A

On reality shows, brides tend to bring a whole crew of friends and family members to join in on the shopping fun. And every time, you can count on there being tons of drama. The takeaway? Less is more when it comes to companions. Otherwise, you’ll spend too much time trying on gowns your party picked out and steering the conversation back to what you want. We’d suggest

bringing no more than two or three people with you. It could be those whose input means the most to you, or you might even use this as a pre-wedding bonding event and invite your mom, best friend, and future mother-in-law. If you can’t imagine not including all of your friends, try inviting them to your final fitting — and then make a dramatic entrance for the big reveal!

Q

Any tips for helping me find “the one”?

A

Keep an open mind. Many times, brides choose dresses that look nothing like the pictures they bring in, so try on everything – even if it doesn’t look like “you.” Remember that it’s the consultant’s job to match you with styles you’ll like – so give her the benefit of the doubt and prepare to be pleasantly surprised. With that said, you also shouldn’t let a pushy salesperson (or your mom) sweet-talk you into a gown you don’t love. Be sure to jot down style numbers and even snap a few photos as you try on – it will help you remember the dresses you loved as well as where you found them.

Q

Do you have any other shopping tips for me?

A

As a matter of fact, we do! Remember to wear nude underwear and a strapless bra to your appointment. It’s also a good idea to wear heels similar in height to those you’ll wear on your wedding day. When it comes to payment, keep in mind that most shops require a 50 percent deposit with the balance due either at your first fitting or when you pick up the dress. Be wary of any shop that asks for more than 50 percent before the dress comes in.❤

Choosing who will stand beside you as you say “I Do” can be difficult, but what’s even more challenging is finding a dress that fits all of their figures, styles, and budgets. While going bridesmaid dress shopping may seem like a great way for your girls to bond, it can often get overwhelming. Some girls may feel like their opinion is being ignored, they may agree on a dress that doesn’t fit your vision, or one may not be able to afford the cost of the dress you end up choosing. Managing your bride tribe means dealing with some drama, but if you keep in mind your bridesmaids’ feelings, a budget, and your timeline, you’ll be shopping like a pro.

3

Mismatched bridesmaid dresses are a great way to appease each girl’s style and budget! The Bridesmaid Budget Though it’s not the most glamorous of topics, determining your bridal party members’ budget is certainly one of the most important. Don’t put off having this conversation, as it will enable you to search for bridesmaid gowns that fall in the right price range. We recommend doing so individually at least a few weeks — if not a few months — before bridesmaid gown shopping takes place.

If one or more of your girls isn’t able to afford the dress you decide on, try to be flexible. Luckily, bridesmaids today have a variety of gorgeous options available at any price point. Is there any way you could open up

your options to include dresses in a similar color palette and style? If you really have your heart set on a particular dress, ask yourself if there are other costs you could pick up — such as hair, makeup, or shoes — that will help alleviate some of the spending for your bridesmaids.

Shop Early and Often You should start shopping for your bridal party at least seven to eight months before the big day. Not only will this timeline reduce stress for you and your girls, but it will also make it more likely for you to score a deal through a sale or trunk show. For your first appointment, we’d recommend that you don’t take your entire bridal party into the shop. Instead, go in with your mother and/or Maid-of-Honor and have them help narrow down your choices based on the research you’ve done. Once you’ve decided on a few favorites, bring the rest of your ‘maids in (during a timeslot you schedule with your shop beforehand) to try on your selections and weigh-in on their favorites. After making your final TODAY’S BRIDE

bridesmaid dress selection (or selections!), be sure to have your girls put their order in at least four months before the big day — which allows three months for it to come in and another month for fittings and any alterations needed.

Shopping Online vs. In-Store We want to stress the importance of going to a local bridal shop as opposed to shopping online. Full-service shops are typically authorized dealers of the

designers they select to sell — unlike many online retailers. We’ve heard one too many horror stories about brides and ‘maids who bought their dress online and ended up needing them heavily altered by a local shop when they discovered the dress wasn’t quite as pictured. Ultimately, shopping online will only cost you more time, money, and stress.

FINDING THE PERFECT DRESS

your mom

As a mom, you have been the main support system for your daughter or son throughout their life. You wiped their tears on the first day of kindergarten, you kissed away the pain when they fell off their bike, and you shared in their joy whenever they succeeded. As their wedding day approaches, you will, once again, focus your world around supporting them emotionally, mentally, and financially. Try to remember, though, that this wedding day is about you, too! Every guest’s eyes will be on you as you enter the ceremony and as you make your announcement at the reception. It’s important to find a gown that flatters your sense of style and complements the essence of the wedding day. Wow the wedding guests by using these tips when shopping for your gown! Consider the Celebration As you’re shopping, it’s especially important to keep in mind the location, the time of day, and the type of wedding — all of which will dictate the formality required. An evening wedding requires long, formal gowns in subdued shades. An afternoon wedding, on the other hand, allows for shorter, more playful gowns in brighter colors.

Start Early Aim to make a decision at least one month before the wedding — definitely more if you’re trying to coordinate with the mother-of-the-groom or others in the wedding party. Be sure to allow even more time for a gown that requires special ordering. Every manufacturer is different, but a good rule of thumb is to allot 12 to 16 weeks for a special order.

Color Cohesive

4

5

The key thing to remember is that you’ll want to complement (and not clash with) the day’s color scheme. You shouldn’t match the bridal party so much that someone mistakes you for the Maid-of-Honor, but you shouldn’t look like a wedding crasher, either. Consider choosing a gown in the same palette as the bridal party (such as, wearing a plum-colored gown if the bridesmaids are in lilac or lavender). Traditionally, you’d want to avoid anything in white, ivory, champagne, and red. However, as these are becoming more acceptable as traditions shift, keep that in mind as you shop is always key. Metallics, navy, and jewel tones are all beautiful and safe bets for mothers’ attire, but if you have concerns, be sure to ask the soonto-be-weds for their input.

Well-Coordinated Typically, the mother-of-the-bride picks out her dress first, setting the tone for what the mother-of-the-groom will wear. You and your future in-law don’t have to match, but you should make sure your looks don’t conflict. Be sure to discuss sleeve and hem lengths, necklines, colors, and styles with each other before shopping. If you already get along well, you may even want to go shopping together. Alternatively, the bride could go shopping with each of you and relay any guidelines. ❤

The Perfect Fit No matter how nice the tuxedo looks on the hanger, guys should choose their formalwear based on these standards for size and comfort: The jacket should feel comfortable at the neck and shoulders, and fasten easily. Also, try standing and sitting with it buttoned. The shirt should fit snugly around the neck, shoulders, and waist. About ¼ inch to ½ inch of your shirt’s cuff should show below the jacket sleeve. Your trousers should button with ease and feel good when you sit. Many styles have adjustable waistbands, or you can opt for suspenders. The hem should break just over your shoe tops.

2

Vest buttons should line up with the front of your jacket, and the vest should button comfortably across your chest. The bottom should slightly overlap the trouser waistband. The vest’s waist usually adjusts with a slide strip for a good fit. If you haven’t checked your shoe size in some time, have them measured by an expert. Remember that the best time to try on shoes is at the end of the day, because if your feet swell at all, they’ll do it then. It's better for shoes to be too roomy than too tight. ❤

PERFECTING YOUR

Y

look

our wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Doing your own hair and makeup could make it feel like any other day when, in actuality, it’ll be one of the most memorable days of your life. To ensure that your makeup highlights and enhances your best features and your hair is flawless and long-lasting, you should hire a professional.

You should start looking for a beauty consultant 3 to 8 months before your wedding date. Just like with any wedding vendor, you’ll want to meet with different options before making a decision. It’s important to find someone who understands the look you’re going for and has the experience and skills to execute it. Find someone who you click with and would feel comfortable enough saying “No, I don’t like that,” or “That’s not what I had in mind.” Remember, this is your day and the work the stylist is doing is intended to make you feel the most beautiful you’ve ever felt. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you want a piece of hair pulled down or a bobby pin is hurting you.

which products show up best in photos and how to keep your hair in place all night long. Talk to your stylist about what will look good with your features and do a few test trials to make sure it looks exactly how you want for your wedding day. The last thing you want is to think you and your stylist are on the same page and discover that she’s done something completely different right before you walk down the aisle.

Apart from the initial consultation, you’ll want to schedule a few appointments for beauty treatments leading up to the day. Your hairstylist will advise you on when’s best to trim and highlight your locks to guarantee the best color and length for your wedding. Schedule a conditioning treatment every three months leading up to the big day to ensure shiny, voluminous, healthy hair. Book a facial a month before the wedding to have flawlessly clear, glowing, and supple skin.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BEAUTY STYLISTS Don’t leave the salon in tears! Choose the right stylist and schedule trials to perfect your look!

TODAY’S BRIDE

You’ll want to meet with the stylist several times before the big day to work out the exact hair style and makeup you’ll want. Bring along pictures of your favorite looks – celebrity red-carpet looks, Pinterest ‘dos, pages from bridal magazines, and photos of yourself! Using these as inspiration and to demonstrate the direction you’re leaning toward will help the stylist create a one-of-a-kind look that will enhance your natural beauty. Ask your stylist about their experience with weddings. They should know

MAKEUP PALETTES

BASED ON YOUR COLOR SCHEME You may have always imagined what you’ll look like on your wedding day – the white dress, flowing veil, and hair style. But have you thought about your makeup palette for the day? It shouldn’t be so heavy that it rubs off on your gown or melts in the heat of an outdoor reception, but you’ll want it to cover any blemishes and highlight your best features. Choose colors that work well with your skin tone as well as the colors of your wedding.

Muted Pastels If your wedding is freckled with pastel lavender, soft sage, or the ever-popular blush pink, you should mirror the look with your makeup! Bright blush will make you look fresh and youthful while bringing color to your face and making you the perfect blushing bride. Pair this with a lip stain (so you don’t leave a mark on your fiancé!) that will make your lips look naturally luscious. Top it off with a light and simple eye shadow with white eyeliner to highlight the sparkle in your eyes.

Bright Hues If you will celebrate your wedding using bright pops of color – like yellow, bright orange, or hot pink – play it up with your makeup! The key to a playful look is to not overdo it. Pick a feature to enhance and stick to that while downplaying all the others. For instance, experiment with a bright red lip, but use a simple swipe of mascara for your eyes. Or, 28

|

TODAY’S BRIDE

use a fun color for your eyeliner – like blue or green – while keeping the rest of your face fresh and neutral.

Jewel Tones For a rich jewel-toned wedding comprised of deep plum, royal blue, and emerald green, your makeup should make a dramatic statement. Play with lip liner to create an ombre lip or add a touch of gold glitter in the center to create dimension. A sparkling gold eyelid with black liquid eyeliner is the perfect finishing touch to create that bold and expensive look.

Neutrals With a neutral palette of nude, white, ivory, cream, or tan, you should keep your beauty routine simple. Play off these simple colors with clean skin and a fresh look. Natural looking powder foundation, a nude or blush lip, and simple eyes will ensure that your beauty shines through above all else. ❤

It starts with a

PLAN

Planning your dream wedding doesn’t have to break the bank!

Tips on How to Start Saving Money

S

pending money is a love/ hate relationship. You love shopping and all of the great purchases you make, but seeing the amount left in your bank account afterwards can be disheartening. Spending on your wedding is the same way, but luckily, we have a few tips on how you can start saving more money and have more to spend!

Before Your Wedding Collect Your Change – Every penny counts! Ask your friends and family if they have jars of coins sitting at home they’d be willing to donate to your wedding. Make sure to roll all the coins yourself rather than using a machine coin counter, as they take part of your savings as payment. Tip Jar – The Tip Jar idea is very similar to collecting change, except it’s not exclusive to coins. At the end of the day, throw in a few dollars. If you decided to skip your morning coffee run, throw in the amount you saved. Completed your goal of running 5 miles? Reward yourself by throwing in $5! This money can add up quickly and go toward vendor deposits! Save Every $5 Bill You Get – This is another common money-saving hack, but really only works for those who use cash regularly. Every time you make a

transaction or break a large bill and receive a $5 bill back, put it away in a jar, shoebox, or wherever. If you do this with every $5 bill you come across, soon you’ll save hundreds – even thousands! – of dollars. Make and Stick to a Budget – This may seem obvious, but sit down with your fiancé and establish a monthly budget and a savings goal. Write down your monthly bills and how much you owe, how much you plan to pay toward credit cards, and what you spend on things like gas and groceries. Then track and record all of your superfluous expenses throughout the month. At the end of each month, sit down to review and decide what you’re spending too much on, what can be eliminated, and where you need to be more frugal. Adjusting where you spend your money can help you make smarter spending choices, which can save you more money to spend on your wedding! Eliminate Unnecessary Expenses – Instead of getting a gel manicure every month, have a girls’ night with your bridesmaids and do each other’s nails! If you can go without cable tv, consider nixing it for a few months. Do you pay a monthly fee for the gym or a membership that you don’t use? Eliminate any unnecessary payments. These cuts can be temporary or permanent depending on the frequency of use.

Declutter – Go through your clothing, purses, books, coats, etc. and sell them to make more money. If there’s a shirt you love but never wear, try selling it online or at a thrift store. Once you start going through your stuff and selling what you don’t need, you’ll see a big profit! Plus, you’ll have a lot less clutter in your life. Use Cash Back Credit Cards – For every purchase, use a cash back credit card instead of your debit. That way, you can reap the rewards at the end of each month. Just be sure to go in to your account as often as possible and pay it off, or you could end up with debt instead of savings. Pack Your Lunch – We totally understand how mornings are: you wake up late, rush out of the house, and don’t have time to pack a lunch. With this routine, you end up spending $5 to $10 everyday on lunch! Instead, pack your lunch the night before work so it’ll be ready to grab on your way out the door. You’ll end up saving around $50 a week, which adds up quickly!

Planning Your Wedding Hire a Travel Agent – You may not know, but you actually don’t have to pay a travel agent for their services! By booking through an agent, you can get special discounts, free package enhancements (like excursions or room upgrades), last-minute flight price changes and more! Plus, you’ll know that the resort is reliable and you’ll have a point of contact if anything goes wrong. Rent Decor – Making your own wedding decorations is a risky task that most likely won’t turn out how you imagined. If you end up renting items that you attempted to make at first,

you’ll be frustrated by the amount of money you wasted on products like glue, modge podge, glitter, paint, and more. Get Married on Off-days – Saturdays are the most common day for a wedding celebration, which means that the vendor you want may already be booked. Where there’s more demand, there are usually higher prices. If you decide to book on a less popular day – like Friday or Sunday – you may get discounted prices or specials that will make your favorite vendor more affordable.

Reconsider DIY decor, as it can end up costing you more money instead of saving it. Don’t Get Married During the “Wedding Season” – Because the weekend dates from May to October are in higher demand, vendors are likely to charge more for their services in these months, known as the wedding season. In off months, like November through March, you may get discounted prices. We understand how costly a wedding can become and how stressful finances can be – especially since you’re about to start a marriage. By using these money saving tips, you can feel more comfortable about making those deposits and payments while maintaining a healthy bank account. ❤ 1. Orchard Photography 2. BCR Studios by Brad

n e d Hid S t s Co Alterations Your wedding dress budget shouldn’t just include the purchase of your dress. Alterations can cost between $300 and $500, so it’s important to go into your appointment with a budget of how much you intend to spend in total – alterations and all.

cluded or not. After tipping your officiant, servers, bartenders, DJ and emcee, set-up and tear down team, and more, you’ll be spending a good sum of money. Make sure you set aside a few hundred dollars for tips and discuss who will be in charge of tipping before the wedding day. Refer to our budget tracker in the 40-page Wedding Planner at the back of this magazine for an idea on how much to tip each service!

Meals for Your Vendors Remember, your vendors will spend as much time at the venue on your wedding day as you will. Just like you and your guests will need dinner, they will, too. Meals should be provided to any vendor present during the ceremony and/or reception.

Overtime Undergarments & Accessories Along with alterations, you should include the cost of undergarments and your accessories. Though you probably have lingerie for the night of your wedding, you’ll need to consider what undergarments you want to wear during the ceremony and reception. Whether it’s a nude bra and panties, shapewear, a slip, or a bustier, you should calculate that cost into your budget along with your garter, shoes, jewelry, and veil.

Be sure to ask your DJ, emcee, photo booth provider, bartenders, and venue clean-up staff how much it costs if your reception runs over. It can be awkward to ask your guests to leave, and why should the celebration end? In case you run in to some late-night guests who just can’t stop dancing, it’s better to know in advance how much you’ll be paying for an extra hour or two.

Postage Stamps may not seem all that expensive, but typically when you’re sending an invitation suite, you’ll have to purchase special postage based on the size and weight of the envelope. This increases the cost of your postage, and if you’re inviting 100 guests or more, you can expect to pay a decent amount.

Cake Cutting When meeting with prospective bakeries, ask if cake cutting services are included in the price of the package. Oftentimes, you’re only paying for the design and possibly the delivery of the cake. If the cake cutting services are not included, ask about pricing and if the utensils for the service are included or if you’re expected to provide your own.

As long as you’re prepared and organized, your wedding will be the best day of your life. The day doesn’t end when you make your grand exit or when the crew starts cleaning. There are still a lot of details that need to be discussed in order to ensure things run smoothly. Here are some questions to consider before your big day:

If you rented a tux or suit, who will return it? Who’s in charge of saving the top tier of your cake if you want to eat it on your first anniversary?

For all of these questions, and more (like, what to do with leftover cake), assign a member of your wedding party or a parent to be in charge. Make sure they know their responsibility before the wedding day and are comfortable with what they have to do. When it comes to planning your wedding, remembering every detail can get overwhelming. WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE A WEDDING CONSULTANT

A Helping Hand We’re very passionate about the fact that on your wedding day you can either be the bride or the Wedding Consultant, but it’s very difficult to be both. You want to be relaxed, excited, and fully present on your wedding day – not rushing around perfecting final details and taking calls from your caterer! Though you may not naturally trust someone to execute the vision you have in your head, there are just too many advantages to hiring a Wedding Consultant – like ensuring that any crisis is handled by someone other than you! As you begin thinking about your wedding, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when deciding how much to spend, where to obtain specialized services, and how to choose vendors. These worries can mount as quickly as the cost of the wedding does. After the euphoria of your engagement wears off and the reality settles in, it’s shocking to discover how much preparation is involved in planning a wedding. If you’re facing decisions like these or don’t even know where to begin, consider hiring a Wedding Consultant!

Saves Time & Money It takes a lot of time to perfect a wedding. If you and your fiancé are handling all of the details, wedding planning can pile up and take attention away from all the once-in-a-lifetime moments you have left before you’re married. A Wedding Consultant 34

While you have a full-time job to focus on, a Wedding Consultant will be 100% focused and committed to creating your dream wedding. He or she knows exactly what works and what doesn’t, and will guide you through the planning process and the wedding day itself. They can also help you refine your ideas, connect you to the appropriate vendors, advise you on proper etiquette, keep you on schedule, and suggest ways to use your budget wisely.

Executes Vision Perhaps the most important role a consultant can play is in orchestrating the wedding day itself. Besides coordinating the vendors, he or she might do everything from gathering your wedding party for pictures to making sure all the seating cards are in place and even calming your nerves. Dedicated to executing your wishes, needs, budget, vision, and more, a Wedding Consultant works to make sure the vision in your head becomes a reality.

Having the benefit of a Venue Coordinator at your chosen location will be a huge help to you on your wedding day. However, there are a lot of differences between a Wedding Consultant and a Venue Coordinator, and knowing what they do can help you make a more informed decision on who you should hire for your wedding day execution. Venue Coordinators Some venues will offer the services of a Venue Coordinator when you book with them. This person will help you select the tables, linens, and chairs for your reception and recommend some vendors from their preferred vendor list. If the venue also provides catering, they will help you choose a menu and bar options and will keep the kitchen staff on schedule throughout the reception. While they can help you with decisions leading up to the wedding and may be present at the reception to ensure things run smoothly, they aren’t expected to help with all details of the wedding like negotiating or communicating with other vendors or planning out the timeline. Typically, a Venue Coordinator doesn’t cost an extra fee, as they are an added perk when renting venue facilities.

Wedding Consultants A Wedding Consultant is hired directly by you to help plan and execute the day. You can hire their services for months before the wedding, to prep the month of the wedding, or just for their assistance the day-of. Not only will they recommend vendors, but they will deal with the negotiations, communications, and timeline of each and every vendor. They’ll make sure your vendors know exactly where to be and when to be there and will handle any crises that arise so you can simply enjoy your day. Wedding Consultants will help you from conception to execution. Hiring a Wedding Consultant doesn’t mean that you won’t have any say in the planning of your wedding or that you won’t be involved. You’ll still get to make all the decisions, hire the vendors you want, and choose the color scheme and theme of the wedding. You’ll just have an experienced professional by your side to advise you, keep you on budget and on schedule, and deal with all the messy problems you wish you could avoid. That way, you can simply enjoy this time with your fiancé and remember only the best parts of your wedding day! ❤

INVITATION

ETIQUETTE We get it: times change and wedding etiquette evolves. In the age of limitless email and social media access, it can be more difficult than ever to decipher what is appropriate. Your invitations serve as the official announcement of your plans, so of course you want to make a great first impression! We’re here to help with a list of some of the dos and don’ts of wedding invitations. DON’T use labels. Sure, it’s easier to stick a pre-printed label right on the envelope, but it’s impersonal compared to a handwritten address. If you prefer a professional’s script, hire a calligrapher.

DO write out names in full. When addressing an envelope, write Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith rather than Mr. and Mrs. Smith, or Miss Rachel Jacobson instead of Miss Jacobson. For more tips on how to properly address your invitations, check out our free printables on TodaysBride.com!

DON’T dictate dress code. Some couples want to include “Black Tie” on the invite, but the ceremony invitation is not the place to do it. If it seems essential to include this information, it can be added to the reception invitation card and placed in the lower right-hand corner.

DO

write out numbers for the year or time of the wedding. Though you shouldn’t write out the full number for a street address, when writing the 4-digit year and time of events, make sure to expand it to a scripted numeral.

DON’T state that you are having a child-free wedding. Leave the “adults only” off the invitation,

and rely on word of mouth, instead. The way the invitation is addressed, whether on the outside or inner envelope, indicates who is invited and, who is not.

DO

omit any registry information. A wedding invite is not the proper place to put your registry information, as it implies the gift is more important to you than the guest is. Bridal shower invitations, however, can include registry information, as it’s typically a gift-giving occasion. ❤

PRE-WEDDING PARTIES

They asked

... and you said YES!

Congrats! You’ve just said “yes” and an-

nounced your upcoming nuptials, and now your friends and family are already planning celebratory parties. Whether the celebrations commence with an engagement party, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, or bachelor/bachelorette party, find comfort in the fact that you won’t be putting much work into planning these early events! If you want to steer your loved ones in the right direction when party planning, let these pre-wedding party Q&A’s assist you.

Engagement Party vs. Bridal Shower Should I have an engagement party or a bridal shower? Typically, an engagement party is thrown a few weeks after the proposal while the bridal shower is planned for two to three months before the wedding date. Therefore, if you have a short engagement — a year or less — consider only throwing one party or the other. An engagement party is a fabulous way to share the excitement of your pending marriage with friends and family, and is the perfect time to introduce family members to your fiancé. Gifts are not required, though some guests may gift the couple with cash. A bridal shower is typically celebrated and organized by female friends and family members and is a gift-giving occasion. It may suit your engagement to throw both parties, whereas some couples may choose to forgo an engagement party and just announce their union through social media or word-of-mouth. Who plans the parties? The planning guidelines are lenient when it comes to location and hosting responsibilities. Traditionally, the bride’s parents organize the engagement party; these days, however, anyone close to the family — like a relative or

friend — can assume the role. For the bridal shower, generally the bridal party — led by the Maid-of-Honor — plans and execute the day’s events.

The Rehearsal When does the ceremony rehearsal and dinner take place? The ceremony rehearsal traditionally takes place the day before the wedding. You can host the meal prior to or after the ceremony rehearsal, or you can hold both on an entirely different day. Who should we invite? Everyone involved in the ceremony should attend the rehearsal including: bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, flower girl and ring bearer, Officiant, readers, and Musicians. It’s considerate to invite the spouse or significant other of each attendant, also. Regarding the dinner, the guest list can be as simple as including your immediate family, the wedding party, and their significant others, though it’s becoming more popular to make it a larger event for out-of-town guests. If you prefer an intimate gathering but don’t want to exclude other guests, consider hosting the rehearsal dinner two nights before the wedding day and having a welcome party for out-oftown guests the night before. READ MORE AT TODAYSBRIDE.COM

Where should we hold the dinner? The rehearsal dinner should be held near the ceremony site. It’s considerate and fun to vary the dinner options from the wedding meal — such as offering steak or seafood if you’re having an Italian menu at your reception — so guests can have different experiences!

Planning a Bachelorette Party to Remember

Pre-Wedding parties are a great way to introduce your fiancé to friends and family who haven’t already met him or her.

Where you decide to have the rehearsal dinner depends on the budget of whoever is throwing it, who is in attendance, and what kind of party the host envisions.

What takes place at the rehearsal dinner? Traditionally, the Best Man offers a toast to the soon-to-be spouses. The groom then follows with a toast to his bride and her parents. The bride may follow with a toast to her groom and his family, but it is not common. You should make sure that all guests are introduced to one another, either by formal introductions or mingling. A special touch would be to introduce your wedding party and say something personal about each one, like how you met or why you asked them to be in your wedding. Keep in mind, though, that this party is meant to be thrown to honor you and your fiancé. If you’d rather have a more relaxed and casual atmosphere with no formal speeches, that’s not required! The rehearsal dinner is a great time to relax with your family and friends without worrying too much about tradition. ❤

Keep the Bride’s Interests in Mind The Maid/Matron-of-Honor and bridal party should ask themselves one important question when planning the festivities: What would the bride really want?

of the girls who are attending. If you’ll be staying overnight somewhere, going to dinner, and/or renting transportation, be sure to include the price when extending an invite.

Get the Guest List from the Bride The bride doesn’t have many responsibilities when it comes to planning the bachelorette party. Just be sure to get a guest list from her of people she’ll feel comfortable “letting loose” with — sorority sisters? Yes! Her boss? Probably not.

Don’t Underestimate the Element of Surprise Given all the planning the bride and groom have put into the details of their wedding, it’s safe to say it’d be a welcomed surprise to not have to make decisions for another event! Ask the bride to trust you to know her expectations, and then take the reins! ❤

Timing is Everything The bachelorette party should be on an evening close to the big day, but it definitely should not fall on the night before the wedding. The bride probably doesn’t envision hungover bridesmaids or walking down the aisle nauseous on her wedding day. Consider scheduling it for the weekend before the big day, instead. Take Budget into Account While it’s important to take the bride’s vision into account, the host(s) should also consider the budget

Getting married means so much more than perusing Pinterest to find gorgeous centerpieces or hiring vendors to help you execute the wedding of your dreams. It’s a union between you and your best friend, joining you together for a lifetime. Your ceremony is where the magic of marriage happens, so make sure you do it right! Use these tips to outline your ceremony procession and timeline. Order of Events To make your wedding day run as smoothly as possible, we have broken down the order of events to help you when trying to figure out what should happen and when. Guests should arrive a half an hour before the bride’s entrance. Mingling between guests is permitted and encouraged, and soft music should be playing in the background. If you plan on having an unplugged ceremony, it is acceptable to have your officiant remind your guests of this once he or she has entered and taken their position.

After the processional, the officiant will make some opening remarks welcoming the guests and speaking about the beauty of shared love. When you break down a wedding to its basic foundations, the order is to be as follows: processional, opening remarks, vow exchange, ring exchange, pronouncement of marriage, first kiss, closing remarks, recessional. A lot of engaged couples, though, like to supplement this timeline with meaningful additions. Readings (from scripture, poems, or literature selections), musical performances, unity ceremonies, or other supplements can be added to your ceremony. Typically, they are placed between the officiant’s remarks and the vows, or after the ring exchange but before the pronouncement of marriage. One timeline of your ceremony, for example, could read like this: processional, opening remarks, reading, vows, ring exchange, unity custom with musical performance,

pronouncement of marriage, first kiss, closing remarks, and recessional. Remember that this is your wedding and should celebrate you. Unless you’re getting married in a church setting, the ceremony can be ordered however you’d like and include whatever customs, traditions, and events you’d like. Use this order of events as a guideline to cater the proceedings to your personal style.

standing at the end of the aisle and who should walk down. If the traditional presentation of the bride doesn’t appeal or apply to you, there are a few alternative entrances.

Order of the Procession It’s pretty common knowledge that the bride enters her ceremony last, but what about everyone else? Unless you’ve attended a lot of weddings, you may not know who should enter the ceremony first or in what order. Here’s a cheat sheet of the ceremony procession: There are a few different options when it comes to processional style. These differences really depend on the preference of the couple. For instance, bridesmaids and groomsmen can enter together arm-in-arm, or the bridesmaids can walk down the aisle alone. If the bride wants both parents to walk her down the aisle, she can choose to do that instead of having her mom escorted at the very beginning. The traditional processional can be followed precisely or can be used as a guide to advise you as you create your own entrance. If you’re an LGBTQ couple, it can be difficult to decide who should be READ MORE AT TODAYSBRIDE.COM

Alternative Entrances • Each walks down a side aisle and meet in the middle at the ceremony site. • Walk down the aisle together, arm-in-arm. • Arrive before your guests, welcome them and mingle. When the officiant announces the beginning of the ceremony, proceed to the front. Everyone’s wedding day is completely unique to them. As you walk down the aisle, you’ll be greeted by those who love you most, regardless of which order they enter. ❤

TIPS ON WRITING

Your

Vows

Write down a list of words that immediately come to mind when you think about your loved one. Use those words as inspiration when you get stuck.

W

hen you sit down to write your vows, you may feel overwhelmed. It can be extremely hard to portray the depths of your feelings for your soon-to-be-spouse through words and you may not know where to start. Rest assured that you’re not alone. Finding a starting point for your vows – and the right words to convey your feelings – can be one of the most difficult tasks when planning your wedding. And because it’s so meaningful, you’ll feel pressured to get it right. Here are some tips for putting what’s in your heart onto paper. Everyone suffers from writer’s block, especially when they’re first getting started. If you don’t write often, you’ll probably be a bit lost on how to begin. The best tip for anyone suffering from a block is to just write. Even if it’s not what you want to say or how you want to say it, write it down anyway. You can always go back and change it. Start writing about the first time you met each other or your first date. Write about how he or she proposed. Whatever you write may not make it into the final draft of your vows, but it will get your romantic juices flowing and allow the words to come easier to you.

1

Write down a list of words that immediately come to mind when you think about your loved one. Use those words as inspiration when you get stuck. Your vows should reflect your relationship as a couple. If you are fun-loving and goofy, don’t take it so seriously. Reference quotes from your favorite TV show or movie or funny memories you share. Answer questions like: What do you want out of life with him/her? Where do you see your relationship in 10 years? How has your life changed because of their love? What do you promise to do to make them happy for the rest of their life? How do they make you happy? How do they make you feel? What do you love most about him/her? How will you continue to show your love? If you get stuck, walk away from it to clear your head. Get some coffee, read a few chapters of a book, or fold the laundry. Clear your mind of romantic musings and focus instead on the normalcy of everyday life. When you’re not thinking too hard about it, the words will come to you. Your vows should be no longer than three or four minutes. Though you may have a lot to express, try to edit out repetitive statements or unnecessary sentences as you read through it. One of the most important steps in writing your vows is reading them aloud. If you feel like you’re repeating the same sentiment over and over, try to condense it into one or two sentences. Aim for a two minute speech, but don’t talk so fast that you feel rushed. Find a comfortable speed and length for you. Writing your vows is a process, and we recommend doing it over the course of at least three months leading up to your wedding day. As you spend this time together planning your wedding, notice the little things that make you fall even more in love with them, and include those in your vows. ❤ 1. Jamie Davis Photography

The Indian Wedding is a complex schedule of many rituals that takes place days – and even weeks – before the wedding! What are these ceremonies, when should the preparations begin, and how should they be celebrated? Here’s an outline of a traditional Indian wedding timeline. Before the Wedding The Tilak Ceremony is one of the most flexible rituals when it comes to your wedding timeline. Traditionally, it takes place a month before the wedding date, but modern day conveniences have made it easier to schedule and perform this ritual. Today, this can be performed according to tradition or in the days before the wedding. In this ceremony, the groom and his offer of marriage is officially accepted by the bride’s family. Male members of the family – including father, brothers, uncles, and cousins – present the groom with gifts and adorn his forehead with kumkum powder. The Barni Bandwhana takes place about 15 days before the wedding. During the Barni Bandhwana, a mauli is tied around both the groom and his parents’ wrists for prayer. The Mayara is a common practice for both the bride and the groom to celebrate their arrangement and good fortune. The maternal uncle of both parties makes his way with great fanfare to his sister’s house (the mother of the bride or groom) and presents them with gifts – typically the garments worn on the wedding day.

Day One

Day Two

A traditional Indian Wedding lasts at least three days and can be as long as a week! On the first night, the bride and groom, their parents, the bridal party, a pandit (priest), and sometimes close relatives gather at home for a prayer service and intimate party.

The following day, the women will gather for Mehndi, or henna preparations. Henna is a very sacred part of an Indian wedding. Because it takes about 8 hours to dry, this art is painted onto the women’s skin in the morning and is allowed to set for the rest of the day. Typically, a READ MORE AT TODAYSBRIDE.COM

Legend says that the darker the henna stain, the stronger the bond between the bride and her groom. professional is hired to paint the hands and feet of the bride and her female friends and family. The second night is reserved for the Sangeet. By this time, the henna should be dried. The bride and groom, their families, and friends, and even some of the wedding guests (if the couple wishes) are invited to mingle and enjoy a meal. Typically during this party, the bride and groom’s close friends and relatives perform traditional dances for the couple.

Day Three The third day is the formal wedding where the bride and groom will be declared married. The morning of the ceremony, the mandap is con-

structed using four pillars. These pillars each represent one of the four parents. Once construction is complete, the groom and his soonto-be mother-in-law meet there before the ceremony where she’ll wash his feet and offer him milk and honey. While his feet are being washed, the bride’s sister tries to steal his shoes. If she succeeds, the groom must pay her to get them back! They then depart for photos and to finish getting ready.

Ceremony The ceremony begins with the Baraat – or the groom’s arrival. He arrives to the ceremony on a decorated white horse, circled by singing and dancing family members and friends. Once he descends, he is greeted by the bride’s parents and family and is presented with gifts. The elders then escort the groom to the mandap where he is expected to remove his shoes before being seated under the mandap. The bride makes her entrance, escorted down the aisle by her uncle. When she reaches the mandap, the bride and groom each place a floral garland around the other’s neck to show their acceptance of one another. 7

8

9

10 11

The pandit, bride, groom, and bride’s parents are seated under the mandap with a ceremonial fire pit placed in the center. Fire is an important aspect in the Indian wedding because Agni – the god of fire – is said to give life. By lighting a fire, you are asking Agni to provide your marriage with a long life. The bride and groom then proceed with the Mangalphera, which is a ceremonious walk around the fire. They must circle the fire pit four times, each representing a major goal in their marriage – dharma (morality), artha (prosperity), kama (personal gratification), and moksha (spirituality). They may be joined together by string or tied scarves as they walk, though this custom is optional. The pandit chants verses as they proceed that officially ties them together in the eyes of the gods. After their fourth cycle, they are officially married and must race to their seats. It’s said that whoever sits first is the most dominant in the marriage! Next, the groom places red kumkum powder on the bride’s forehead and adorns her with a mangalsutra. The mangalsutra was traditionally a black string with two gold pendants that was tied in three knots to symbolize the bonding of souls for 100 years. Nowadays, it’s more often a necklace made of black and gold beads that shows that this woman is now married. If the couple decides that they want to incorporate western traditions, this is where they would exchange wedding bands.

Reception

48

|

48

After their marriage is declared official, it’s time to celebrate! The guests and families of the bride and groom move on to the reception, where they dance the bhangra – a traditional folk dance. Other aspects of the reception are very similar to western wedding receptions with videographers, DJs, a seated dinner, desserts, and dancing.

Indian brides typically have two wedding lehengas! After the ceremony, she will change into another sari for the reception festivities. After the Wedding The following day, both sides of the families meet for Bou Bhat. It is at this lunch that the groom’s family officially invites and accepts the bride into their family. The groom then pledges himself to his bride, and promises to support her and provide her with food and clothing. To prove this, he presents her with a new sari and a meal. Finally, a few days or weeks after the wedding, more extended family – like aunts and uncles – give their blessing over the marriage with the Aashirwad. The bride’s family will go to the groom’s house, present them with gifts, and give their blessings. Then the groom’s family will, in turn, do the same for the bride’s family. An Indian wedding ceremony may seem complex and a bit overwhelming if you’re not familiar with the customs and timeline. However, it’s all focused on love and the tying together of two families. Many customs have been adapted to resemble or incorporate western traditions, but following tradition is an important aspect to having a meaningful and symbolic Indian wedding. ❤ 1. Choosing a wedding venue may seem like an intimidating decision right now. You need a place that fits your budget, accommodates your guests, and most of all, suits your wedding style. But rest assured: whether you’re a nature lover, a modernist, or a hopeless romantic, Northeast Ohio has the perfect wedding venue for you.

RECEPTIONS

1

Where do I begin? One of the best ways to begin is by figuring out your style and asking yourself what kind of atmosphere you want to create for your big day. Do you want something totally casual or incredibly elegant? Come up with two to three words that describe what you’re envisioning. Additionally, you and your fiancé can better determine your style by paying attention to your daily life. What’s the style of your home decor? What do you like to do in your spare time? There is no reason to give up what you love on your big day; in fact, you should be celebrating it!

clude; a spot that normally works for 150, for example, might only fit 100 if you want to have a large dance floor and/or a band. Then, you’ll need to determine your budget. Venues typically charge per guest, so prepare a draft of your guest list and determine how much money you reasonably want to spend on each guest. Remember that you’ll spend around 50 percent of your wedding budget on your reception. Once you have an idea of your budget and the number of guests, you’ll be able to focus on venues that fit your parameters.

The small touches that make the wedding all about the two of you will also make the wedding memorable for your guests. Take some time to discuss your vision with your fiancé and write out your wants and needs. Once you have an idea of what style works for you both, you’ll be able to find a venue to match.

Finally, please do yourself a favor and take the time to compare the sites in-person. Simply calling a possible reception site for a price quote does not show you what you’re getting for your money. Walking through the venue with your fiancé will help you visualize the details of your dream wedding coming together in the perfect setting.

How do we prepare for venue tours?

How many should we look at?

Ultimately, knowing how many people you want to invite is crucial when picking a location. It’s also helpful to have some idea of the details your reception will in-

probably still have a sizeable list of places to consider. Your best bet is to check out at least three (but usually no more than six) venues in person so you’re able to easily compare sites. Keep track of each venue and try to schedule your tours close together so you can have a fresh memory of your visits. While it’s tempting to just drop by a venue, it’s never a good idea. The catering staff might not be available to show you around and answer all of your questions on the spot. Make an appointment and plan to spend at least an hour at each space. Keep in mind that it’s best to visit each venue around the actual hours of your event, as it will allow you to see how the space looks naturally lit.

What should we look for as we’re considering venues? First impressions are everything! When you begin checking out potential sites, note how each location makes you feel the second you walk in. One of the first things you’ll want to make note of is whether the site is large enough to accommodate the number of people on your list. The space may look large when it’s empty, but wedding essentials – like tables, chairs, a buffet, a bar, the band or DJ setup, and the dance floor – can take up a lot of space. Not to mention your guests, who will need some elbow room to move around comfortably, too.

|

TODAY’S BRIDE

4

Incorporate your theme into your venue with uplighting, linens, centerpieces, and accent decor. 5

The best way to assess the size of a site is to visit while another wedding is being set up. Of course, if you decide you must have your wedding at a sentimental – yet smaller – favorite spot, you can always work backwards and tailor your guest list to match the venue capacity. Additionally, keep in mind your must-haves. Do you require an indoor/ outdoor facility? Or maybe your vision won’t be complete without a view of the water. Key factors like these can make your decision a lot easier when visiting possible venues.

Any suggestions for decor? What will your guests look at when they’re not gazing at you or smiling for the photographer? Whether it’s the city skyline or a beautiful body of water behind you, exceptional landmarks always make for definite eye candy. If there’s

no view per se, look to the venue’s decor or architectural details to add a little personality and drama to your reception site. If you’re considering a certain theme and color palette for your party, take that into consideration, as well. The site doesn’t have to be done in the exact colors as your planned decorations, but the walls, carpets, chairs, and curtains shouldn’t clash with your party’s theme, either. Quick tip: you can always incorporate your theme with uplighting, linens, centerpieces, and accent decor.

What should we keep in mind? You should ask if other events are scheduled for your wedding day and how much time is allotted between bookings; there should be, at the very least, one hour between events. If the

room is partitioned, find out what sort of group will be next door. If you’re having a daytime celebration in a public spot, such as a park or garden, be prepared for strangers to trek past. They may even smile, wave, or come by to offer well wishes. If this is okay with you, go for the park. If not, ask about privacy options, or opt for a lovely lawn on a private estate. When touring a facility, be sure to look around thoroughly and meet the staff. You may even want to see how your waiters and waitresses will be dressed. Also, make sure you know who the contact person will be for your event (i.e. the wedding coordinator, the catering manager, etc.). Get their name in writing as well as the name of an acceptable substitute.

6

What is included with our venue package? Select venues have their own tables, caterers and pre-approved staff, and many provide chairs and linens. With other spaces, you’ll need to rent all of these amenities. Not all venue packages are created equal; be sure to ask your venue coordinator what is considered “extra.” If you plan on bringing in outside services, you’ll want to find out what limitations there may be as well as what time you can come in to set up.

We found the one! Now, how do we book? Usually a verbal confirmation is enough to hold the space for a day or two. Then

you’ll be expected to pay a deposit and sign a formal contract outlining all the details of the reception package. Deposits aren’t always refundable, so find out before you sign the contract. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – that’s the reason you went to visit the hall in the first place! If the staff isn’t interested in helping with your concerns, chances are they won’t be interested in helping you have the wedding reception you want. The better informed you are, the more comfortable you’ll feel with your choice. ❤

ENTERTAINING YOUR GUESTS

1

You can never underestimate the power of music to get the party started. The right music can add drama, heighten emotion, and most importantly, keep your reception (and guests!) moving. Our guide below is designed to help you find that perfect performer who will create a dynamic playlist for your wedding day. The energy a live band can provide to your reception, though, is contagious. Like having a private concert just for you, your closest friends, and family, your guests will witness something truly special and one-of-a-kind at your reception, as no live performance can ever be repeated.

Choosing your musician In our opinion, you can’t go wrong with either a DJ or live band. However, there are specific benefits to each, so here’s our breakdown on the issue: If versatility is a priority, disc jockeys can’t be beat. Their repertoire can include practically every song ever recorded. If they don’t currently have a copy of your favorite tune, a well-connected DJ will be able to get it. It’s important to note that disc jockeys do more than just shuffle songs – they also emcee the event and make sure that everything runs smoothly. If your guests don’t seem to be dancing or enjoying themselves, the DJ can easily transition to a new song that gets your crowd excited. Because they can walk away from the music while it’s playing, they’re also free to interact with the crowd and make sure your guests are having a good time.

56

|

TODAY’S BRIDE

Overall, the decision to hire a DJ or live band is up to you, as they each offer a completely different atmosphere for your reception. Though they’re both very different, you’re sure to make memories out on the dance floor either way.

Start your search

2

We’d advise booking this service as soon as possible. Popular performers get booked far in advance, so planning ahead will help secure your first choice. You should start researching local DJs and bands about 12 months out. By the time you’re eight months away from your wedding day, you’ll want to make sure your favorite musician is booked! READ MORE AT TODAYSBRIDE.COM

3

Keep in mind that researching should only be a small step along the way; you should never make a decision without a face-to-face meeting with the DJ or muscians who will be working the day of your wedding.

Find the perfect fit First and foremost, you’ll want to consider the size of your reception site and number of guests attending. An intimate space won’t fit a 22-piece orchestra, just as a single speaker probably won’t cut it for 400 people. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you set up the entertainment in a central area near the edge of the dance floor. It can be difficult for your musicians to keep the party going if you have tables set up between the dance floor and the stage/DJ booth.

Prepare for the big day Whatever your choice, both bandleaders and disc jockeys can help you select the perfect songs to personalize your reception. Both can read the crowd to adjust their music selection and cater it to the wedding style. After all, part of

his or her professional expertise is being able to read the crowd and respond to its mood. You’ll need to provide them with a list of your staple selections, such as your entrance, first dance, and parent songs. If you have particular favorites that you definitely want to hear throughout the reception (like the Cha-Cha Slide or Cotton Eye Joe) – or songs you absolutely don’t (think, Chicken Dance or Hokey Pokey) — give your musician a do-notplay list and a must-play list of specific songs, genres, and artists that you love and those that you’d rather not hear. A week or two before your wedding, you should reach out to your entertainers to confirm the reception’s timeline and playlist (especially for required songs). Timing

• Confirm your musician’s arrival time. You should expect them to arrive at least an hour in advance and plan on contracting them for at least three hours. Be sure to ask about extra fees if the reception goes longer than anticipated. • Ask about breaks and “continuous flow.” As your reception will most likely last around 4 hours, odds are that your performer will have to take a break at some point. Ensure that music will continue to play whether it’s by the remaining band members or recorded music.

Equipment • Figure out what the equipment requirements are, such as power outlets, space needed, speakers, and anything you may be expected to supply. If the musicians are bringing all of their own equipment, record any extra charges. • Verify with your reception site manager whether the facility has any restrictions on the number of musicians and/ or pieces of equipment you may bring in. You should also ask about electrical power supply and noise limitations.

Introductions • Before the reception, inform your DJ or bandleader on how to properly pronounce the names of your bridal party for announcements, their relation to the newlyweds (Maid-of-Honor, parents of the bride, etc.), and a timeline of the reception’s events.

Contact Info • Make sure you have the names and contact info of the musicians who will play at your wedding, plus the names of acceptable substitutes in case of an emergency.

Song Selections • Discuss song choices for key events like your entrance, first dance, bouquet toss, and cake cutting. • A do-not-play list is perfectly acceptable to include if you have certain artists, genres, or even specific songs you’d like to avoid. • Similarly, a must-play list is okay to request, as well. Any songs that you definitely want played at your reception should make it to the playlist.

Attire Guidelines • Let your performers know the dress code beforehand.

Contract Points • Ask about and confirm deposit requirements, payment plans, and deadlines. • Make sure the cancellation/refund policy is included. If something unforeseen happens to a musician who’s not under contract, you could end up without wedding music. • Find out about any hidden fees or extra costs you might have. Above all, don’t be afraid to ask all the questions you want answered. ❤ 1. BCR Studios by Brad

SELECTING YOUR MENU

ato remember fare

4

In order to keep your dance floor full, your guests will need proper sustenance. Here’s what you need to know to bring the best food to the table.

When should we begin to search for a caterer? Start looking for a caterer early in your engagement – around eight or nine months prior to the wedding. This will give you plenty of time to research your options before making the final selection (which should be made four to five months before the reception date).

Ask about any dietary needs on your invitation so you can tell your caterer ahead of time about any menu revisions.

How can we prepare for our catering appointment(s)? Unless your wedding budget is unlimited, figuring out your guest count will certainly play a big part in deciding who to hire and what to serve. You’ll also want to determine the level of formality you want for your reception; from there, you can consider which serving style fits best. Would a plated dinner be the most appropriate? What about a buffet, or even family style? The company you choose may have catered events at your venue before and may be able to advise you on which serving styles have been successful in the past. Above all, be open to new catering ideas you might not have considered before - like food stations or farm-to-table options!

you’d like to try, or may not charge for the service at all. Be sure to ask the price before scheduling your tasting, which you should book far enough in advance that you have the option of altering the menu. Though you shouldn’t expect a complete overhaul of a dish’s recipe, don’t hesitate to make suggestions or ask if the chef can modify simple elements. If your guests have special dietary requests — like vegetarian or gluten-free options — be sure to mention it to your caterer early on. Some seasonal items you plan to serve may not be available at the time of the tasting, so you’ll have to trust your caterer with those dishes.

Is a taste test customary or considered an extra charge?

What do we need to know about our bar package?

Many caterers offer couples the opportunity to sit down and explore their culinary options with a taste test, though pricing may vary. While some include it in the price of the service when you book them, others charge based on which dishes

Decide in advance how much you want to spend on alcohol and have an idea of what’s most important to you. Will you provide champagne for just the head table or for every guest? If you opt to include liquor, will you use well or premium

Fab Food Stations Most people are under the impression that food stations are meant for larger, more extravagant weddings, but they’re perfect for intimate weddings, too! A smaller guest list will allow you to splurge on foods that might otherwise be outside of your budget.

brands? Typically it’s considered a faux pas to have a cash bar, so if you’re looking for a cheaper option, consider having a dry wedding or opting for a soft bar with just beer and wine options. When discussing the bar with your venue or caterer, find out what their standard bar package includes. Will mixers like juice and pop be included or are you expected to provide these? Is gratuity included in your package price? Questions like these will ensure you know what you are paying for. It’s important to know how you are being charged, as bar services price packages differently. If you have a full bar, you’ll be charged either by the drink (consumption) or by the bottle. If you are charged by the bottle, be sure to ask if you will receive a credit for par-

7

tial bottles or if you will be allowed to take home the bottles that have been opened. Also, find out how many bartenders will be on duty, whether there are any corkage fees, and whether the facility has liquor liability insurance.

How long should bar service be available? Be sure to arrange for bar service that lasts as long as the reception itself (the average wedding reception lasts between four to six hours). You can save some money by requesting that the bar stop serving alcohol at a particular time, but you should make provisions for non-alcoholic beverages to be served until the reception is over. ❤ 1-7. Genevieve Nisly Photography

Here are our tips for making the most of your food station experience: • Aim for five or six stations, each featuring a different cuisine or dishes from different cultures. • Consider theming the food – for example, it could reference your first date, honeymoon location, or hometown. • Be conscious of family traditions as well as dietary restrictions when making your final choices. Also, keep in mind your catering company’s specialty dishes. • I nteract with chef-attended stations, like hibachi or customized crepes. • You can create a non-traditional environment by including space to mingle and setting up a variety of lounge areas, or adjust a more traditional seating arrangement by including larger spaces between tables so guests can easily stroll from station to station. ❤

DECOR WE B 4 5

efore they see the dress or taste the cake, your guests will assess your wedding by what they see — which makes decor one of the most important elements. From ambient lighting to organza overlays, there’s a lot that goes into wedding decor. Chances are, you will have countless questions along the way. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common decor dilemmas and our best tips to create the look you want! Choosing your decor The first step in planning decor is to envision your wedding day. Start with picking out a color scheme and possibly a theme. Which colors do you gravitate toward? While a theme isn’t required, it could end up inspiring all of your decor details! When considering a theme, try not to over think it; instead, choose something that you and your partner love in your everyday lives. Do you travel often? Think about using a map for your seating plan. If you both love to read, you could incorporate books into your centerpieces.

Once you have those two elements in mind, you can start searching for photo inspiration. Keep track of all of your ideas with a wedding binder, Pinterest board, or both!

Too many ideas After awhile, Pinterest can become your worst enemy. It has so much gorgeous inspiration that it can be hard to decide on a cohesive look. To prevent this, give yourself a timeline for your research stage and then cut yourself off. DECORATING YOUR DAY

A D D A " W O W ! " FAC TO R W I T H T H E S E I M AG I N I T I V E ACC E N T S . Linens It’s important to put some thought into your linens, as they’re a major part of the reception decor. Many couples choose solid linens for their reception tables — a decision that is completely appropriate given the formality of the day. If your reception is more on the casual side, however, you might want to consider patterned linens. Prints — particularly stripes, plaids, floral, and geometric patterns — are popular in weddings right now.

1

Adore Similarly, you should have some criteria for all your decor selections. Before committing to something, ask yourself these two questions: Will this item bring my guests and me joy on the day of my wedding? Does it match the overall theme of my wedding? If either of those questions produces a “no,” then back away and keep looking. You can always come back to an idea later. With a clear mental picture of what you want – paired with the assistance of a reputable decorator – you’ll be able to confidently select items that will help pull everything together and provide the look you desire for your reception.

Rent or buy We’re huge advocators of renting your decor. Not only is renting often a more economical solution, it also helps eliminate hours of searching and potential storage issues. And let’s be real – are all 50 of those rustic votive candle holders going to do anything besides collect dust after your wedding?

Today’s brides are also seeking out more textured linens, such as chiffon, rosettes, ruching, and ruffles. Lace remains a popular choice for vintage brides, while metallic and sequins are a new trend.

Short on budget? Patterned runners can add a lot of impact for a fraction of the cost of a full linen. Or, you might try alternating tables — some with bold, bright linens and others with textured runners — to create visual interest.

Tents

7

You can also use rental companies as a source for ideas. Renting materials gives you access to the latest styles in decor, table settings, linens, chair covers, and more!

Pinching pennies

Tents are the perfect solution for Northeast Ohio brides who prefer a little weather insurance for their big day, as well as a beautiful blank canvas for decor. Tents can be decorated however you imagine — a nice alternative to adapting your vision to a pre-existing space. Bonus: you can even add heat or air conditioning, depending on the season.

Ice Sculptures

Uplighting

First, pick a venue that already has a chic ambiance of its own. When visiting, be sure to take in the details: Picasso prints on the walls, fine Persian rugs on the floors, or an amazing crystal chandelier as the room’s focal point will add that something extra to your reception. Finally, you’ll want to focus on elements that will have the biggest impact, as statement pieces will ensure you don’t overspend on small details. Dramatic uplighting, a dance floor marquee, or a pillar of flowers is sure to set the scene and create the effect you’re looking for. ❤ 1. Genevieve Nisly Photography 2. Silvie Gil Photography 3. 2

Whether you choose to go with something elegant like a hand carved monogram, or something functional like a martini luge, an ice sculpture can add that special touch of glamour to your reception.

Uplighting is the art of using light to create a gorgeous backdrop. Through a lighting designer, you’ll be able to use pin spots to illuminate centerpieces, as well as the head table and cake table. You can amp up the ambience and completely transform the venue with beams of rich color and exciting patterns.

Dance Floor Decor Ditch the idea of line dancing across whatever general floor comes with your venue. You can opt to go as simple as a little bit of illumination spotlighting the center of the room to an extravagant customized motif. 3

Signage While wedding signage may not be a “new” idea, it has become more popular. Whether they’re directing guests to the ceremony site or saving seats for the newlyweds, wedding signs are a fabulous source of functional decor. ❤ 1. High Five for Love Photography 2. Before you meet with potential florists, have some ideas in mind regarding types of arrangements and which flowers you would like to see on your wedding day. Research which flowers correspond with your color scheme and whether or not they are in-season at the time of your wedding. Everlasting Blooms

Brides are always looking for ways to cut costs, and flowers can be one of the most expensive aspects of your wedding. In looking for budget-friendly options, you may consider having a silk flower bouquet, instead. Here’s what you need to know before ordering a silk flower bouquet. Silk flowers can be a fantastic synthetic option for a bouquet if you suffer from allergies. Not only will you have a gorgeous arrangement, but your eyes won’t be swollen shut, and you’ll be able to breathe clearly. Plus, you won’t ruin any pictures or romantic moments by swatting away bees or other insects.

TODAY’S BRIDE

Another added benefit of silk flowers is that they won’t wilt in the heat. While your bouquet may be gorgeous when it first arrives to the ceremony venue, by the time you make it through pictures and into the reception, they may start to droop. Silk flowers last a lifetime.

cost effective to get stems that are currently in bloom. However, if they’re being made using fabric, you don’t have to worry about whether or not the flowers you want are in season. Silk flowers do have some disadvantages, though. If you imagine drying or pressing your petals to create a keepsake – like an ornament or rosary – you won’t be able to do this with silk flowers. You’ll also miss out on the aroma that real flowers emit.

Fresh flowers have to be kept in water when they aren’t being used, which can get messy when you take them out of the vase to hold. If you don’t want to risk any water spots getting on your wedding dress, silk flowers can be stored in any temperature and won’t stain your dress.

While silk flowers can be just as expensive as real flowers – if not more so! – they’ll last much longer than just a day. Whereas your fresh flowers will eventually wilt and die. The money you spend on silk flowers will be invested in a lifelong treasure. Most florists can just as easily provide and work with silk flowers as they do fresh stems. Consult with your florist for the pros and cons of each to make the right decision for your beautiful bouquet. ❤

You can also order any flowers you’d like if you decide to have a silk bouquet. With fresh flowers, it’s more

FINDING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

C

aptured at the right time in the right place, photographs can convey a message of love; so your wedding photos should reflect your love story. Hiring the perfect photographer for your special day will ensure that your memories are captured as a piece of art, forever.

The Prep Work Before you set out to find that perfect photographer, you’ll want to have key information booked and ready to discuss – including your wedding date and locations for the ceremony and reception. Most photographers will have portfolios or online galleries, so browse their images for a style you like. Or, meet photographers and view their portfolios on-the-spot when you attend a Today’s Bride Wedding Show! Compile a list of your favorite photographers and interview at least three promising candidates. This is the best way to assess their past work, their personalities, and what they have to offer you. Photographers have styles they may favor, but ideally your photographer should want to work with your vision to get the best results.

Points to Ponder When deciding on your photographer, consider these points before making your decision.

Evaluate the value of your photographer — not just the price, but the quality of the images that the professional will produce. Hire a photographer who specializes in weddings, as they’ll be more experienced in timing and procedures and may have even shot weddings at your ceremony and reception locations before. They’ll know how to pose the bridal party to create natural, candid-looking shots and how to make the bride feel comfortable and beautiful all day long. around. Which of your choices do you feel has the ability to draw smiles and poses out of people for hours? Who do you and your fiancé feel the most comfortable around? This is especially important, as you’ll be spending your entire day – and some of your more intimate and private moments – with your photographer. It’s best to find someone who makes you feel secure and comfortable. Wedding photography encompasses more than just showing up on the day of the wedding; it’s a rather involved

3

task that requires a great deal of planning and skill. Hire someone who will prepare, coordinate, and communicate every aspect along the way. Ask who will actually be documenting your day — you don’t want the unwelcome surprise of ending up with a photographer you’ve never met before. If you’ve ever considered going the friend/family member route, there are a hundred reasons why you shouldn’t. First, your loved ones should be able to truly enjoy your day, not work it.

4

Ask to see past wedding albums and get testimonials from brides who have used their services. Beyond that, you’ll have a written contract to protect your investment and ensure you’re getting exactly what you want.

You might be surprised to know that most couples don’t actually own their wedding photos, meaning that they aren’t able to freely share or print their images without permission. As the creator of the images, your photographer holds the copyright, so it’s always a good idea to ask about their policy during your initial consultation.

5

6

Gather details about packages and price points. Typically, packages vary by the number of hours a photographer will be present on your wedding day and how you’ll access your photos upon completion. Some packages may include a wedding album full of your best portraits while others may simply provide you with login access to an online collection. Once you’ve drawn up plans with your photographer, make sure that you confirm all of the details of the service within a contract.

Make a Wedding Day Plan Once you’ve made your final decision, there are a few details you and your photographer should hammer out together.

7

TODAY’S BRIDE

Decide which shots are must-haves for you and your fiancé, and which shots you don’t mind leaving out.

Discuss your locations and, if possible, visit them with the photographer ahead of time to scout prime settings. Try to go at the time of day that you will hold your ceremony/reception so you can see how the light falls. Keep in mind that, depending on what type of package you get, costs will range. Photographers price their work in different ways, so make sure you ask each candidate how he or she is coming up with their numbers. When you plan the schedule for your wedding, don’t forget about your photography. If you’ve decided not to do a first look, make sure you allot plenty of time for a variety of shots between the ceremony and the reception. Depending on how big your family and wedding party are, and how many poses you have in mind, this process could take up to 90 minutes. If your reception is at a different location, we suggest scheduling no less than 45 minutes for photos and whatever time you need to travel to your reception venue. ❤ 1. BCR Studios by Brad 2. WHY YOU WANT A VIDEOGRAPHER

Capturing the Moments Your wedding day goes by so quickly that you’ll miss a lot and may not remember a good amount of it. A videographer will ensure that every meaningful moment is captured for you to relive and cherish for years to come. Relive the moment. While a photographer will capture the reaction of your spouse the first time he or she sees you, they won’t capture the gasp of surprise or the words of love and admiration that he or she whispers in your ear. You’ll have pictures of your dad raising a glass to toast your marriage, but you may not remember exactly what he said. When your loved ones have passed on and you want to hear them laugh or see them dance the jitterbug again, you can always watch your wedding video. Your wedding day will go by so fast and you’ll be so nervous at first that you may not remember the details! Videography allows you to relive each beautiful moment of your wedding day in a way that photography can’t.

See a different point-of-view. A videographer offers you a different perspective of your own wedding. You won’t get to see your fiancé getting ready with his groomsmen, but your wedding video will show you just how nervous he was. As you 94

|

TODAY’S BRIDE

walk down the aisle, you’ll be so focused on your soonto-be-spouse at the other end that you may not even notice anyone else is there. Your videographer will capture shots of your guests arriving and dancing at the reception. You’ll see your flower girl strut down the aisle and watch as your mother wipes away tears when your father gives you away. Seeing all of these moments through the eyes of your loved ones and guests will provide you with a different perspective of the day and allow you to draw a different meaning every time you watch it.

Share your day. Having a short video of the festivities allows you to share it on social media with family or friends that couldn’t make it. And if you like watching home-videos of your childhood, the debate between hiring a videographer or not shouldn’t even be a question for you. You’ll be able to watch your special day on your 50th anniversary and with future generations of your family. Imagine sitting down with your future kids and laughing over how the styles have changed and cover-

ing their eyes when you and your now-spouse share your first kiss. It could even become a tradition to relive the experience on every anniversary – showing your children what true love looks like. A videographer is one of the best investments you will make for your wedding and the outcome is a treasured and cherished keepsake from the most emotional day of your life. ❤

QUICK TIP Be mindful of the technology you’re purchasing compared to the technology you’re able to use at home. For example, Blu-Rays will work on a standard television but are best optimized on a high-definition screen. It might not be worth the extra cost to add that to your video package if you don’t have the compatible technology to view it.

HOW TO FIND THE

1

RIGHT VIDEOGRAPHER Your wedding day will be one of the biggest moments of your life. You don’t want to hire the wrong vendor to document it. How can you find the right videographer, and what do you ask when you do? We’ve got your guide to hiring a videographer below. About 8 to 12 months from the wedding day, you should start meeting with potential videographers. Look on TodaysBride.com and in Today’s Bride Magazine for local professionals, ask friends and family for recommendations, read reviews, and peruse their website and social media platforms. Video hosting sites like YouTube and Vimeo will show their quality of work and dedication to their craft.

A highlight reel is a great way to relive your wedding over and over again. You should definitely favor someone who is a full-time videographer. Professional videographers – like the ones in this magazine – who have experience, a website, and a reliable business will make you feel more comfortable than hiring someone off Craigslist. They’ll be happy to answer your questions and respond to your requests to make your video absolutely perfect. Once you’ve done your research and chosen three vendors to interview, there are some questions you should be sure

96

|

TODAY’S BRIDE

to ask. Refer to the 40-page Wedding Planner at the back of this magazine for even more! • What new technologies do you have that would make my video unique? • What’s included in the package, and what’s considered an enhancement? • How many cameras will there be? • How long will my video be? The last question is especially important to clarify, as there are several different length options when it comes to wedding videography. A full-length edit is documentary style and covers the entire wedding ceremony and reception. It can last 2-4 hours. Storytelling editing is similar to documentary style, but will incorporate interviews from your guests, parents, wedding party, and even yourself. A short-form edit is usually between 30 to 60 minutes and is a more cinematic approach to your wedding. It can include color enhancement, music, and even special effects. The most common wedding video, though, is the highlight reel. This short video lasts just a few minutes and incorporates your vows, toasts, or music over the images. It will capture the most important moments of your wedding as well as candid shots of your guests having fun. Even though it only lasts a few minutes, videographers are skilled at capturing the emotion and love shared on this day on video. The highlight reel is a great way to relive your wedding every single day. ❤ 1. Sabrina Hall Photography

video trends

Wedding videography has changed a lot since the days of watching your parents’ 4-hour reception tape. New and creative ways to film and edit your wedding video make it a memento that you’ll want to watch every day!

A piece of

Cake

1

The perfect wedding cake should balance delicious flavors with creative design, but it can be hard to find a baker that can execute both well. We’ve compiled a list of steps to help you find the perfect bakery!

Finding the one: Research experienced cake designers. Start your search at TodaysBride.com, where you can look through a list of the best Northeast Ohio cake designers. When reviewing local bakers, be sure to visit their website and social media accounts. Look for pictures of their previous work and read reviews from real couples who’ve used their services before deciding on your favorites.

Set up a time to meet and discuss your options. You can begin to interview and compare licensed wedding cake companies up to a year in advance. (Don’t forget to bring this copy of Today’s Bride – there are plenty of questions you can ask in our Wedding Planner!) We recommend narrowing it down to your top three choices before setting up a meeting – that way, you can easily keep track of pricing, flavor options, and cake displays at each place.

CHOOSING YOUR CAKE

2

Ask to see a portfolio of recently decorated cakes.

When looking at a baker’s portfolio, pay attention to the execution of a design. Remember, each decorator has his or her own style and strengths; be sure to take note of the decorator that suits your personal style and request that they work on your cake.

very important aspect in choosing the right bakery for you. Though you may favor chocolate cake, you might find that you fall in love with the most divine carrot cake when going to tastings. While your guests will “ooh” and “ahh” over its appearance, it’s the taste of the cake itself that your guests will remember, so make sure not to neglect this important step.

Of course, you’ll be comparing

prices between cake companies. Charging per serving is standard in the cake industry, but some companies will charge based on the number of tiers or the flavors you select, so be sure to ask how they’re coming up with their numbers. You’ll also want to find out if the bakery will provide someone to cut and distribute the cake, whether they box and freeze the top tier for you, and if these services cost extra. Your instinct might be to choose the cheapest baker, but your decision should depend greatly on what the cake looks like, tastes like, and whether or not it fits your wedding style!

Now comes the best part… Arrange a tasting. Though some bakeries may ask for a service fee, most will offer free cake tastings, so call ahead of time and let them know that you’re considering them for your wedding! Though tasting is obviously everyone’s favorite part of choosing a wedding cake, it’s also a

velvet, tiramisu, AND key lime? No worries! You just might be able to have them all. Most wedding cakes have more than one tier, and sometimes each tier can have a different flavor and filling. You might even consider serving cupcakes, in which case, you could have each individual serving be a tasty new treat. Remember, your baker has been doing this a long time and has seen everything, so discuss some of your ideas with them for different ways to incorporate more flavors.

Time to reserve that cake. Book your bakery at least six months before the wedding. Design, flavor, and decorations don’t have to be decided upon until three to five months before your wedding day, but ensuring that the bakery you want has time to devote to creating your perfect cake is important. You may want to ask how many weddings they already have scheduled for your weekend, and discuss design timelines and head count deadlines with them before booking.

Choosing a design: Consider how you want your cake to reflect elements of your wedding. Is your wedding more traditional or is it laid-back? Do you want it all white or to complement your color scheme? With the myriad of possibilities these days, bakers can match the cake to anything, from the invites to the bouquet.

Look at as many cakes as you can! Bridal magazines and bridal shows are a great place to start, but don’t forget to explore the thousands of ideas on Pinterest, too. We recommend creating a secret board to keep your guests from seeing your ideas before your special day!

Once you’ve gathered a couple ideas, start comparing your favorites.

9

Does a pattern emerge? You may notice that most of your favorite designs are covered in a simple buttercream frosting rather than fondant, or that they each have a bold, geometric design. Chances are, you’ll be drawn to a particular look or design element.

Schedule a design consultation after you’ve made your final decision. Make sure to bring swatches from your gown and your bridesmaids’ dresses, samples of the flowers, or colors used at the reception, as well as photos of the cake designs you love to inspire your cake decorator!

10

Take your decorator’s advice to heart. Though bakers are constantly finding new ways to make cakes more elaborate, they’re also the experts and know whether or not your dream cake is realistic. If they say that a decadent, seven tiered cake will collapse, consider altering your design. Keep in mind that they have years of experience behind them and know what works and what doesn’t. Ultimately, you will have the final decision, but thoughtful planning in the beginning will ensure a beautiful and delicious cake in the end! ❤

WHICH IS FOR YOU? BUTTERCREAM

is the traditional type of icing used to frost birthday cakes and other conventional desserts. A classic buttercream recipe calls for powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Many cake enthusiasts would agree that they’re team buttercream because of its flavor and texture, making the cake easier to cut compared to fondant. However, if you’re planning on having an outdoor summer wedding, this soft selection might not be the best for you, as it tends to melt in warm temperatures.

FONDANT

has a thick, modeling clay-like consistency with a smooth finish that envelops wedding cakes perfectly. Made from sugar, hot water, and corn syrup, fondant is typically rolled thin and draped over the cake. It can be sculpted into other decorative elements — like flowers or figurines — as well! Fondant tends to be used to create a flawless finish with sharp, dramatic lines, or soft, rounded edges. This frosting’s strength is also its weakness, though: the texture isn’t agreeable to every couples’ tastes.

MARZIPAN

icing can be rolled and draped over cakes just like fondant can; the difference is that marzipan is made from almond paste, which has a more flexible structure. The almonds also give the marzipan a delicate, nutty taste. Bakers sometimes mix fondant and marzipan together to create the perfect substance of elasticity and subtle flavor. After placing marzipan onto a wedding cake, it’s important to cover it until you’re ready to serve so it doesn’t dry out. ❤ READ MORE AT TODAYSBRIDE.COM

CHOOSING YOUR VEHICLE

You should also take your attire into account – will you be wearing a ball gown or a sheath dress? While you can comfortably sit in a mermaid or sheath dress and share your space with the people around you, it’s a bit harder to maneuver with a ball gown or A-line – especially if space is limited.

Details, details, details. Most brides can’t imagine anything worse than arriving late to their own wedding. Make sure you arrive on time – and in style – by using these guidelines to secure every detail.

Outline the Specifics What exactly should the contract include? For starters, it should list the vehicle(s) you’re renting – including the size, color, and make and model details. If you’ve chosen a specific vehicle, include the license plate number, as well. Your contract should also highlight the name of the driver(s), a breakdown of any extra fees and gratuity, an explanation of what happens if your driver or vehicle becomes unavailable, and any special requests you may have.

Create an Itinerary Once your contract is finalized, prepare a sheet with contact names and phone numbers, as well as all pick-up/drop-off addresses and times. Don’t forget to include any off-site locations where you’ll be getting photographs taken on this list! As a guide, most wedding limo rentals last approximately five hours. This allows ample time to arrive at the ceremony location, get married, and be transported to the reception site. Because you pay by time allotment rather than the mileage, take advantage of any idle limo time

|

TODAY’S BRIDE

Make sure your limo company is registered with the Department of Transportation and has all the required insurance. by having the driver escort family and friends to the ceremony site. The driver(s) should be given the itinerary and directions well in advance. You should also call and confirm these arrangements with your transportation the week of the wedding to prevent any day-of fiascos.

Be Prepared for Anything On the big day, make sure you have the chauffeur’s cell phone number in case of an emergency. It’s also a good idea to give passengers a copy of your location and direction sheet along with an emergency contact number (such as the wedding consultant’s cell phone) in case the driver gets lost. Following these steps will get you where you need to be when it comes to your transportation. When all is said and done, you’ll have peace of mind – and a piece of paper – to ensure it all goes smoothly. ❤ 1. Artistic Photography Inc.

HONEYMOON PLANNING

LET’S GO + SEE Going to the beach… There’s no question that relaxing on a beach is the most popular honeymoon itinerary. No matter where you go, the ocean, sand, and sunshine are going to be exactly what you need to unwind after the stress of wedding planning, but how can you choose which beach to travel to? Travel agents can help you book your stay at an incredible resort with stunning views, excellent service, and exciting excursions. In order to make this vacation different from every other beach vacation, we recommend trying something you’ve never done before. Order an exotic dish or local cuisine. Embrace your adventurous side by zip-lining or cage diving with sharks! Fun experiences like these will make your honeymoon memorable for years to come.

Going to the city… There is no better time to explore a new city like Rome, Beijing, or even Chicago than on your honeymoon. It gives you the chance to adventure off with your new spouse and explore the unknown together. Our suggestion to you is to immerse yourself into the culture of the city itself. Be a traveler rather than a tourist. Stay at a local bed and breakfast instead of a massive chain hotel, or rent out an apartment! Become a regular at a local coffee shop down the street and find a hidden gem of the city that isn’t in the tourist books. Talk to natives about their favorite part of living in the city and spend time getting to know their customs and values. You may just stumble upon a place you’ll want to visit over and over again to celebrate your anniversary.

Going to the snowcapped mountains… Imagine sitting next to a cozy fire in a log cabin with your new husband or wife as you watch the snow drift down outside. If this sounds like the perfect, relaxing getaway for you, consider heading to a snowcapped mountain! You can ski and snowboard, shoot down tobogganing slides, or embrace your inner child by making snowmen and snow angels. A snowy vacation gives you time as a couple to truly revel in the fact that you are married. Long conversations will stretch into late nights and you’ll learn even more about each other than you did before your engagement. Though heading north isn’t the traditional destination for a honeymoon, sharing time together (and snuggling to get warm) can create some beautiful and magical memories.

Going on a road trip… What’s a more amazing way to spend your honeymoon with your new spouse than on a cross-country road trip? You’ll spend hours together playing road games and singing to your favorite songs. Fighting over directions might not be pleasant in the moment, but resolving the issue and talking it out together will make for good

communication skills and lead to a stronger marriage. There’s no better time to create these stories than on your honeymoon.

Before you leave for a road trip, make sure your oil is changed, you have a spare tire, and your insurance is up-to-date. Planning is important when it comes to road tripping, so make a list of all the sights you want to see and consult with a travel agent. He or she can tell you about cute hotels, inns, and resorts that are along the way, and can help you map out the best route to take. Bring an old-fashioned map with you for when your GPS can’t get a signal, and pack an extra car charger, just in case. Allotting a certain amount of cash to be spent on souvenirs and food can ensure that you’ll have enough for gas and hotels.

a wedding, and that’s okay! There are plenty of adventures to be had and memories to be made close to home, and residents of Northeast Ohio couldn’t be luckier. From secluded bed and breakfasts or scenic vineyards to thrilling amusement parks and bustling big cities, Ohio offers newlyweds a variety of destinations for their honeymoon. Check-in to a quiet inn nestled in the center of Amish Country, or spend a week hopping from rollercoaster to waterslide at one of Ohio’s parks perfect for the adrenaline-junkie couple. Starting off your marriage in debt because of your wedding and honeymoon expenses isn’t a great idea, so if saving some money is what’s best for you, staying local is the perfect alternative. Plus, if you forgot to pack your pajamas or toiletries, you can always make a quick stop back home to pick them up. This is also a great option for any couples who have pets and hate to leave them behind. Set up dinners at restaurants you’ve always wanted to try but never got the time, or celebrate your union at your parents’ house with your favorite home-cooked meal. One packing tip you should know no matter your destination is to pack some of your clothing in your spouse’s bag. That way, if one of your bags gets lost, you’ll still have a few outfits in your partner’s bag to get you by until they can find your luggage! Your honeymoon is a beautiful way to start your marriage. Regardless of your destination, as long as you focus on each other and make time to celebrate your love, you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. ❤
