THINK ABOUT MONEY, HONEY
When budgeting, don’t forget about conversion rates. Prices may seem good, but when Canadian dollars are converted to foreign dollars, you may be surprised at the difference. Take into account prices for excursions or meals, or if you’re at an allinclusive resort, tipping.
CARRY-ON, MY FRIEND
Never pack your essentials in your checked luggage. Your dress, suit, accessories, rehearsal outfit and shoes all need to be safely stowed in your carry-on. Remind your wedding party, family and friends of the same thing. All important items should stay with you.
LOOK FOR PERKS, PAL
You’re getting married so you deserve all the special treatment. Don’t be afraid to “name drop” your wedding plans when booking things. Who knows? You may get bumped to first class, be upgraded to a suite, have a romantic dinner comped or be blessed with a pre-wedding massage.
KEEP IT SIMPLE, BUDDY
The little details are what makes a wedding unique, but that doesn’t mean you have to bring in a million personal décor items. Small things like menus, place cards and other signage can really add to your vibe. But try to lean into your destination setting. You may not need to spend as much on florals if you’re surrounded by palm trees and hibiscus plants. Speak to your contact person/planner at your venue about shipping ahead, because (shockingly), they often don’t have the space to store your dozen boxes of Edison bulbs or cases of wedding favours.
Embrace everything local.
You’ve secured the date, booked the venue and sent out the invites. Now that the big stuff is out of the way, it’s time to think about the little things. Here are a few tips to make your destination wedding go smoothly.

PICK A PLANNER, PARTNER
We all know that planning a wedding is stressful, but a destination wedding? That’s a ceremony, reception and group trip, all in one. Working with a planner could be the best decision you make. In fact, working with someone at home along with an on-site planner at your destination is the perfect combination to take the details off your plate and allow you to relax and enjoy the day (or week!).
BE ACCESSIBLE, MATE
Take a good look at your guest list. Is there anyone who may have difficulty with a long walk to a ceremony on the beach? Is the resort friendly to those with mobility needs? How long is the drive from airport to destination? These details need to be worked out well before the day to avoid anyone missing important parts of your wedding celebrations.

SPLURGE ON ONE THING, CHUM
Leave room in your budget to hire a really great photographer. If a photographer is included in your wedding package through your venue, ask to see a portfolio, or images from their last five weddings. You may want to invest in a local professional who is more your style, or even bring a photographer with you. After spending a lot of cash to be married in a stunning location, you’ll want photos that showcase that.
