Praise her with a flower

I have learned in any and all circumstances the secret of facing every situation, whether well-fed or going hungry, having a sufficiency and enough to spare or going without and being in want, I have strength for all things in Christ who empowers me. (Phil 4:12-13)

Did you know the early Feast of All Saints was a commemoration of ‘‘all the martyrs’’? Today’s 1 November feast honours the saints many of us have known.

As the Vigil Mass coincided with the last day of the Rosary month dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary, it was also timely to close it by singing songs of praise, bringing flowers and lighting candles for her. It was also a time to reflect on our relationship with our Blessed Mother, for we are told, where Mary is, so too will be her son, Jesus.

In our issue this month, we bring to you a recollection on the Discernment of Spirits by Fr James Tan, SJ,

from Singapore; a Social Communications seminar conducted by Ignatius Krishnan from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, and community projects undertaken by our parishes.

We can look forward in the near future to a new St Peter’s Church with attractive gothic architecture, as Archbishop Simon Poh recently blessed the earthbreaking ceremony at the site in Padungan.

To those of us who still have lingering doubts, let us pray for the grace to acknowledge Christ as our sufficiency, and turn to our Blessed Mother to intercede for us, and maybe praise her with a flower?

A song for our Blessed Mother “Praise Her with a Flower”

KUCHING — The 17th Worldwide Children’s Eucharistic Holy Hour (WWCEHH) at Blessed Sacrament Church on 4 October began with a welcome and introduction at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto.

After lighting the Unity Candle, the procession, led by a cross bearer, followed by flower girls, bearers of the statue of Our Lady of

Fatima, altar servers, petition bearer, student presenter, rosary leaders and the congregation made their way to the entrance of the Church. They were accompanied by Fr Felix Au and the Sunday School teachers.

The glow from the lighted candles held by the people following the procession was a magnificent sight, made all the more spectacular by the sweet chorus of hymns coming from

the children’s choir inside the church.

The statue of Our Lady of Fatima was welcomed with an Entrance hymn that played until it was placed at the Sanctuary.

St Jude’s Parish celebrates Feast Day

CELEBRATING THEIR PATRON SAINT … Priests and parishioners joining in the procession celebrating St Jude’s feast day BUNAN-TEBEDU — “The greatest miracle by St Jude I have seen, is this parish,” said Archbishop Simon Poh of Kuching during his speech at the St Jude’s Parish, Bunan Feast day and Eucharistic celebration on Saturday evening, 26 October.

On the ninth day, there was a procession with the statue of St Jude from Kampung Bunan Gega to the church where Archbishop Simon Poh presided at the feast day and thanksgiving Mass together

with Archbishop Emeritus John Ha; the Provincial Superior of the Claretian Missionaries of Chennai Province, Fr Jesu Doss CMF; and all the priests serving at St Jude’s Parish, Bunan.

After the Eucharistic celebration, the Archbishop launched the new “Buk Jeran Salib”, another option for parishioners to pray the Stations of the Cross, especially the bed ridden.

Archbishop Emeritus John Ha also unveiled the “Buk Sermon Sewa A Duwah Sanda Bidayuh Serian”, which is a compilation of the homilies prepared by Archbishop John Ha. The Eucharistic celebration was followed by a fellowship to mark the event.

Annual Retreat: Priests urged to move out of their comfort zones

KUCHING — 84 priests from all over Sarawak and Brunei attended a 5 - day Annual Retreat at St Peter’s Seminary College, Kuching from 16 – 20 September.

The retreat was preached by Fr Antonio Pernia SVD, former superior general of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). SVD is the largest congregation in the Catholic Church Priests from arch/dioceses in Sarawak and Brunei posing for a group photo after their retreat dedicated to mission comfort zones, and to especially Extraordinary Missionary Year work.

The two stalls selling various food items and snacks were a self-funded project of the Ladies Guild and Legion of Mary of St Peter’s Church. A total of 20 members of Ladies Guild and Legion of Mary assisted in manning the stalls which contributed RM8,429.00 towards the maintenance fund of the Archdiocesan Curia and Cathedral Pastoral Centre (ACCPC).

PASTORAL VISIT ... Archbishop Simon Poh was at St Stephen’s Church, Bau, on 19 October for a special session to present his plan, vision and other issues. He spoke on the “Vicious effects of poverty” and “Baptised and Sent”. A total of 457 church leaders, representing 48 outstations KGK (Komiti Gereja Kampung) attended.

BAU — On 21 October, St Stephen’s Parish handed over its 18th completed AGAPE HOME (house for the poor) to Aldrine Anak Duing, a mother of four, aged between 1 to 15 years of age.

Aldrine’s Indonesian husband is currently serving an 80 – years jail term at the Puncak Borneo prison for a family misconduct.

She also looks after her

bedridden younger sister who has two boys aged 2 and 3 years old. Their father abandoned them a year ago.

The total project costing RM24,400 was undertaken by St Leo Chapel at Kampung Serasot, under St Stephen’s Parish.

According to Jeffry Rase, the Organising Chairman of the event, the main objective of the sale was to raise funds in aid of St Stephen’s Church, Bau repainting project, and also for the local church's spiritual, social welfare activities and for other ministries.

The event was also to foster greater fellowship among the members of the congregation as well as with members from other parishes who came to patronise the sale.

About 45 stalls were set up and manned by members of the parish groups, ministries and communities selling local delicacies, drinks, handicrafts, religious items and a variety of attractive items.

There was also free health screening by Catholic Nurses

CWS still needs funds to finance an estimated amount of RM120,000.00 for the operation of Home of Peace.

The other parishes which do not have the Conferences of St Vincent de Paul have submitted their requests for welfare grants totalling RM120,800.00 which CWS will disburse at the end of the year.

For the past few years, CWS has not been able to cover the number of appeals for financial aid and the operations of the Home of Peace despite the Lenten Appeal collection and other donations throughout the year.

Creating social media awareness KUCHING — The Social Communications Committee (SOCCOM) of the Archdiocese of Kuching led by its Advisor, Fr Felix Au, organised a three-days training programme on Social Communications from 4 – 6 October.

The trainings, held at the Mater Domini Auditorium, Archdiocesan Curia and Cathedral Pastoral Centre (ACCPC), were conducted separately for seminarians, parish social communications teams and for the general audience.

Apart from the session for the seminarians, some 60 plus participants attended the training sessions given by Ignatius Krishnan, Coordinator for the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocesan Social Communications Ministry.

Recollection on discernment of spirits KUCHING — A recollection on Discernment of Spirits was held at the Mater Domini Auditorium, Archdiocesan Curia and Cathedral Pastoral Centre (ACCPC) on 19 October.

The 3-hour formation session was conducted by Fr James Tan, SJ, Head of the Jesuit Development Office of the Malaysia – Singapore Region. The Society of Jesus (SJ) keeps in close contact with its benefactors, known as ‘Friends of SJ’ who support in effort or in kind, or both, by providing spiritual care through formation programmes.

Fr James first came to Kuching to give a recollection session organised by Jesuit Development Office in October 2017. This is his fifth trip to conduct a recollection.

He works closely with the Jesuit community in Kuching, and adheres strictly to the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Kuching.

SERIAN — On 7 – 12 October, 39 members and friends of the Catholic Senior Citizens’ Fellowship (CSCF) went on a pilgrimage encompassing several churches from the central to the northern regions of Sarawak.

Pope Francis names US Archbishop Marino to head Vatican academy for diplomats

Death comes to those who forget it, Pope says VATICAN CITY — Death is not a topic that should be avoided but a reminder that cures men and women from any illusion of being allpowerful, Pope Francis said.

While today’s worldly culture “enslaves (and) seeks to anesthetise us to forget what the end means,” facing the topic of death is necessary so that one can truly appreciate life, the Pope said 31 October in a video message to young people participating in the World Youth Encounter in Mexico City.

“Forgetting death is also its beginning, and a culture that forgets death begins to die from within,” the Pope said.

“A person who forgets death has already begun to die.”

The event, which brought together young people from 26 countries, including the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Haiti and South Africa, was sponsored by the Scholas Occurentes educational charity supported by Pope Francis and World ORT, a London-based “global education network driven by Jewish values.”

The World Youth Encounter brings “together hundreds of students from around the world to share their passion, experience and ideas

for a more tolerant and peaceful society,” World ORT’s website said.

Reflecting on the meeting’s conclusion, the Pope said it was a reminder that life, too “has its end.” While the topic may be “gloomy,” he added, the “question of death is also a question of life.”

“Just as words are born from silence and end there, allowing us to hear their meanings, so it is with life. This may sound somewhat paradoxical,” he said, but “it is death that allows life to remain alive!”

Death also reminds men and women of the “impossibility of being, understanding and encompassing everything,” he said. “It is a slap in the face to our illusion of omnipotence.”

Death teaches that “from the beginning and forever there is one there who sustains us - both before and after the end.”

Pope Francis thanked the participants for their “courage” in talking about death during the event because in doing so, “we find the frailty that opens us to listening to and encountering others.”

“Remember,” the Pope said, “if death does not have the last word, it is because in life we learned to die for another.”

The day’s short Gospel reading from Luke recounted the story of 10 lepers who, seeing Jesus approach, cry out to him for healing. He tells them to go show themselves to the priests and, as they go, they are healed. But only one returns to thank Jesus.

“Like those lepers,” Pope Francis said, “we, too, need healing, each one of us. We need to be healed of our lack of confidence in ourselves, in life, in the future; we need to be healed of our fears and the vices that enslave us, of our

introversion, our addictions and our attachment to games, money, television, mobile phones, to what other people think.”

The story also illustrates how, “on the journey of life, purification takes place along the way, a way that is often uphill since it leads to the heights,” he said. “Faith calls for a journey, a ‘going out’ from ourselves, and it can work wonders if we abandon our comforting certainties, if we leave our safe harbours and our cozy nests.”

And, finally, he said, the story teaches that returning to Jesus with a heart full of gratitude is the culmination of the journey of faith.

“To give thanks is not a question of good manners or etiquette; it is a question of faith,” the Pope said. “To say ‘Thank you, Lord’ when we wake up, throughout the day and before going to bed, that is the best way to keep our hearts young.

“This also holds true for families, and between spouses,” he added. “Remember to say thank you. Those words are the simplest and most effective of all.”

Archbisop Joseph Marino VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis named a US archbishop serving as a nuncio to head the Vatican diplomatic academy.

Archbishop Joseph S. Marino, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, 66, was named president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the Vatican announced 11 October.

He will be only the second US prelate to head the Romebased school, which was founded more than 300 years ago; US Cardinal Justin Rigali was president of the academy from 1985 to 1989.

In early 2013, Pope Benedict XVI had named Marino to be the Vatican’s first nuncio to Malaysia; the Vatican and Malaysia announced the establishment of full diplomatic relations in 2011. That post also included serving as nuncio to East Timor and apostolic delegate in Brunei.

Before that, the US

archbishop had been the nuncio to Bangladesh since 2008.

Born in 1953, he graduated from Birmingham’s John Carroll High School in 1971 and earned degrees from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

As a seminarian at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, he spent the summer of 1976 volunteering for St Teresa of Kolkata and her Missionaries of Charity, caring for male cancer patients and assisting the nuns as they worked in poor villages.

In 2017, he told star2.com, a Malaysian online outlet, that the experience “helped develop my empathy toward the needy, especially social prejudices, loneliness and rejection. The poorest of poor deserve love and care and we should reach out and help them lead better lives.”

He said his experience in Kolkata “taught me a spirit of openness and compassion.”

After ordination to the priesthood in 1979, he served as an associate pastor at St Paul’s Cathedral in Birmingham from 1980 to 1984, and then entered the academy for diplomats in

Rome.

He served as a diplomat based at the nunciature in London and worked at the Vatican’s Secretariat of State from 1997 to 2004.

He was part of a Vatican delegation St John Paul sent to Belgrade in 1999 during the Kosovo conflict in a bid for peace, and he was part of the papal delegation sent in 2003 to meet with US President George W Bush carrying the pope’s plea for peace before the start of the war in Iraq.

Marino succeeds Italian Archbishop Giampiero Gloder, 61, who will be the papal nuncio to Cuba, after heading the academy since 2013.

The academy trains priests – chosen from all over the world by the Secretariat of State – to become Vatican diplomats and men of prayer who will serve the pope and the church. They earn graduate degrees in canon law, study languages and attend courses on the history and practice of Vatican diplomacy, international law, papal documents and current affairs.

Serian Senior Citizens complete pilgrimage of Sarawak churches

• Continued from p7 The journey by bus began with the group gathering at St Theresa’s Church to receive Fr Paul Herry’s blessings for a safe and fruitful journey on 7 October, and the first stop was Sibu.

They were welcomed at the Sacred Heart Church by Msgr Michael Lee, Fr Philip Hu the church Rector, and chairman of the Parish Senior Citizens Club, Michael Kiu Kwee Kee. After reciting the Rosary and Mass celebrated by Fr Paul, the pilgrims were entertained to lunch by the Club which has over 300 members and is over 30 years old.

The next stop was Mukah at St Peter & Paul Church after which they journeyed on to Miri. Here, Fr Paul celebrated Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral and they met Fr Sylvester Ngau.

They then continued on to Limbang where they attended a fellowship dinner at St Edmund Church after Rosary prayers with the community. They were entertained with songs and dances by the local communities of Bisaya, Iban, Chinese and Bidayuh heritage.

The statue of Mother Mary was crowned as Queen by Bishop Richard Ng recently, and the ceremony attracted a large crowd.

The pilgrimage continued on to Liot Qua, the hill top site of

the proposed Retreat Centre, a few kilometers away. They then proceeded to Bintulu, their last stop where they were received by the Rector of Stella Maris Church, Fr Gabriel Chung.

The pilgrimage produced better tolerance, forgiveness and fellowship among the pilgrims. They thanked God for blessing them with good weather, good health and keeping them safe throughout their journey.

Today’s Catholic is publishing a series of reflections by Archbishop Emeritus John Ha. This year, we will be reflecting on the Book of Psalms.

After a series of individual laments in Psalms 3-11, the Psalter offers a community lament in Psalm 12 (or Psalm 11 in the Greek version of the Bible).

Comments The superscription reads: “To the Leader: According to the Sheminith. A Psalm of David.” “Sheminith”, having to do with the numeral eight, is translated “Pro Octavo” in the Latin version. It likely indicates a mode of liturgical recitation of the psalm.

Structurally, Psalm 12 begins and ends with the community addressing YHWH (verses 1 and 7). Verses 1 to 4 present their reason for their cry to YHWH. Verse 5 gives YHWH’s prompt response, on which verse 6 gives a reflection. At the end of their supplication, the community feel confident of YHWH’s intervention (verse “They utter lies to 7), though they still experience the evil each other; ways of the wicked (verse 8).

The opening two words in verse 1, with flattering lips “Save, YHWH”, express the community’s and a double heart cry for salvation from a society that lacks they speak.” ḥāsîd (= person with steadfast love) and ’ěmûnîm (= faithful people) (verse 1). For their covenant with YHWH, marked by (Ps 12:2) steadfast love and fidelity, faces the risk of being totally broken. In the absence of these covenantal characteristics, falsehood takes over. It is manifested through “flattering lips” (false praises) and “double heart” (false dealings) (verse 2). Needless to say, when falsehood is rampant, trust disappears and the community faces the serious threat of total destruction.

Verse 3, therefore, is a prayer for YHWH to “cut off all flattering lips” and “the boastful tongue”. The flattering lips sing empty praises of others. The boastful tongue flatters the self. Those infested with falsehood seek to dominate others.

Verse 4 articulates their attempt in two ways. Firstly, they seek to “prevail with their tongues”, that is, to win the hearts of people by flattering them. Secondly, they are out to lord over others as they boastfully declare, “Our lips are our own – who is our Lord?” Disregarding the covenant, they have rejected YHWH as their Lord and God and arrogantly strive to take over from Him. Clearly, they have to be removed totally to save the whole covenant community from destruction.

YHWH declares, “I will now rise up. I will place them in the salvation for which they long” (verse 5). The word “salvation” indicates YHWH’s declaration as His decisive response to the community’s cry, “Save, YHWH”, in verse 1. YHWH sees the community threatened with destruction by arrogant liars as “the poor and needy” (verse 5). An important attribute of His is His commitment to the poor and needy, especially when they “groan” in affliction, as was manifested when He heard the groaning of the Israelites in slavery in Egypt (cf. Ex. 2:23-25).

Verse 6 affirms the “purity” of YHWH’s declaration in verse 5. “Purified seven times”, it is completely true and stands out in stark contrast to the falsehood spread by the “flattering lips” and “boastful tongues” of those who seek to take over from YHWH. The community is thus led to total confidence that YHWH will save them as He has declared (verse 7) even though “the wicked are still prowling around on every side” (verse 8a). The wicked are those infested with falsehood; they “exalt violence among humankind” (verse 8b).

Yet, YHWH, and He alone, is the true Lord. He utters the truth and saves His people from their adversaries through the truth. Vis-à-vis the covenant Psalm 12 alludes to, the truth is firstly that YHWH heard the people’s groaning and crying during their slavery in Egypt and so came to their rescue. Following that, He sealed a covenant with them whereby He made them His people and became their God. In His steadfast love for them, He is unfailingly faithful to them. Thus, the community of His people can withstand the onslaught of their adversaries only by remaining steadfast and faithful to Him as their only true Lord and God. Their covenant with Him will remain intact.

Christian Significance The conflict between falsehood and truth calls to mind Jesus’ words in Jn. 8:4445. To those seeking confrontation with Him, Jesus gives a long discourse. A part of it asserts, “You are from your father, the devil, and you choose to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.”

The devil has won Jesus’ enemies to himself through falsehood to turn them against Jesus because He speaks the truth.

The father of lies is all out to destroy Jesus, “the way, the truth and the life” (Jn. 14:6). He puts it into the heart of Judas, a member of His inner circle of disciples, to betray Him (Jn. 13:27). Judas’ betrayal of his Master triggers the start of the accomplishment of the devil’s plot. For the moment, Jesus’ enemies seem to have the upper hand. They arrest and try Him. They even bring Him to Pilate, the local representative of the Roman Emperor, the highest civil authority, to endorse their demand for His crucifixion.

Pilate offers Jesus’ enemies a choice to release either Him or Barabbas, a hardcore bandit. The people’s choice of Barabbas over Jesus amounts to their choice of falsehood.

In response to Pilate’s questioning, Jesus declares, “For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (Jn. 18:37-38). Finding no case against Him, Pilate offers Jesus’ enemies a choice to release either Him or Barabbas, a hard-core bandit. The people’s choice of Barabbas over Jesus amounts to their choice of falsehood.

Jesus the truth is ultimately crucified by the agents of the father of lies. Falsehood triumphs, but only for a short while. In the end, the truth must prevail. That happens when Jesus, the truth, victoriously rises from the dead. His resurrection is testimony of His Father’s intervention in total fidelity to His promise of salvation for His people.

Jesus’ resurrection is surely the Father’s response to the cry of the community of His people in Psalm 12: “Save, YHWH!” It is clearly a Christian response. By His resurrection, Christ the truth saves the faithful from destruction by the devil, the father of lies.

Remember our dead to affirm life

by Hosffman Ospino “Nothing is certain in this world,” my mother often says, “except for the fact that one day we will all die.”

A rather stoic and sobering assertion, indeed, yet one that wisely embraces the acceptance of life’s ultimate limitation.

Old age and illness are perhaps the two realities that more regularly confront us with our mortality. The brutality of violence and war continues to assess – almost irrationally – a deadly toll on many. The effects of poverty, hunger and lack of decent conditions to live shorten life for others.

Rich or poor, young or old, immigrant or citizen, believer or unbeliever, highly influential or almost invisible in the anonymous crowds of our growing cities, death is the great equalizer.

Such thought echoes the author of the book of Ecclesiastes: “For the lot of mortals and the lot of beasts is the same lot: The one dies as well as the other.

Both have the same life breath. Human beings have no advantage over beasts, but all is vanity” (3:19).

During the last months of the year, Catholics reflect about the reality of death. The church’s liturgy brings us All Souls’ Day. Among Hispanic Catholics, the feast is widely known as “el Día de los Muertos” (the Day of the Dead).

Masses for deceased non-Catholics?

Is there any prohibition against having Masses said for deceased Protestants or Jews, or should they only be requested for Catholics?

There is no canonical rule against having a Mass said for a deceased nonCatholic. As a matter of fact, the opposite is true; the church’s Code of Canon Law says, “A priest is free to apply the Mass for anyone, living or dead” (Canon 901).

This means that the Eucharist can be offered for anyone – dead or alive, Catholic or non-Catholic.

One might think the opposite; most Protestants, for example, do not believe in the existence of purgatory; they feel that their deceased loved ones, if they lived a worthy life, are already experiencing eternal beatitude.

Since the Mass is an intercessory prayer (it re-presents the salvific acts of Christ in his death and resurrection and seeks to apply those merits to the deceased), one might suspect that Protestants would see this as unnecessary and could be offended if given a Mass card (of a Mass offering to pray for the repose of the soul of their deceased).

But I have never found that to be so; instead I have found them consistently grateful.

Which brings up still another question: Can you have a Catholic funeral Mass for a non-Catholic? Here again the answer is “Yes,” under certain circumstances.

Canon 1183.3 provides that a Catholic church funeral may be offered for baptised non-Catholics “unless their intention is evidently to the contrary and provided that their own minister is not available.” – CNS

This day is also about cultivating relationships in our families, neighbourhoods and faith communities as we remember. We live with gratitude for what we received from those who are not with us anymore. We live inspired by their

memories and legacies.

We remember our dead to affirm life: life as a gift from God through which we become present to one another in history. Life in Jesus Christ, also a gift from God that never ends and incessantly transforms all that exists, including the created order.

The Day of the Dead is a true sign of hope. More exactly, hope in the resurrection. I am fascinated by how many Hispanic communities and families celebrate All Souls’ Day as Día de los Muertos with profound gratitude and a sense of fiesta.

Many Catholics, perhaps influenced by the fears and distortions about death that our culture impose upon us, tend to think of death mainly as sadness, loss and isolation. From that perspective, it makes sense that one wants to avoid it or ignore anything related to it.

The Day of the Dead, however, with its affirmation of the victory of life against death, the celebration of relationships that bridge the visible and the invisible, and the colourful symbolism that captures an omnipresent festive outlook in Hispanic cultures, tells a different story.

Remembering the dead with a sense of fiesta is quintessentially Christian. In Christ, the living and the dead partake in the communion of saints. In Christ, any sense that death is final is no more.

Why pray for the dead?

November 2, All Soul’s Day (and the first week of November), is the Church’s most earnest and concentrated time to pray for the dead. In fact, St. John Paul II was ordained on All Saints Day, November 1; and accordingly, he celebrated three “first Masses” the next day – on All Soul’s Day, the day on which a priest is permitted to offer up to three Masses on behalf of the dead. On November 2, 1946, John Paul II offered three Masses – for his deceased father, brother, and mother, all of whom he lost before he turned twenty-one.

For me, there are loved ones I call to mind every Mass, especially as the gifts are brought forth. For the Mass is the offering not just of Christ the Head, but of the entire Body of Christ to the Father. I intentionally place them upon the altar with the making-present of Christ’s efficacious and atoning sacrifice.

More than Forgiveness The Catechism notes with regard to funerals: “The homily in particular must ‘avoid the literary genre of funeral eulogy’ and illumine the mystery of Christian death in the light of the risen Christ.”

(CCC 1688) It continues: “In the Eucharist, the Church expresses her efficacious communion with the departed: offering to the Father in the Holy Spirit the sacrifice of the death and resurrection of Christ.” (CCC 1689) But why pray for the dead? For many, remembering the dead and celebrating their life makes sense; but why do they need our prayers?

Our confusion here is because we no longer take seriously the full reality of sin.

What do I mean?

We tend to readily understand that sin separates us from God and that we need to be reconciled back to him. But we often fail to realise that we need more than merely forgiveness.

Joy and Communion Sin not only ruptures our relationship with God – it wounds us in the process.

Imagine a nail stuck in a piece of wood. Forgiveness is represented by the removal of the nail. But the wood is not yet “whole”; there’s still an empty space in the wood left by the nail – which remains after the nail has been removed.

Forgiveness deals with the eternal consequences of sin (heaven or hell). But there still remains the temporal consequences of sin, namely, the way in which sin wounds us, the residual effects of which remain long after we’ve been forgiven (see CCC 1472).

The language I use with my students is as follows: God wants not only to forgive us, but to heal and transform us. If forgiveness attends to the eternal consequences of sin, God’s work of healing and transformation attends to the temporal consequences of sin. If the former is symbolised by the “removal of the nail,” the latter is signified by filling in the hole left behind.

Frankly, our puzzlement over why we should pray for the dead has much to do with our modern assumptions of instant canonisation for our deceased loved ones.

Don’t get me wrong: we should have great hope in God’s mercy. But God desires to thoroughly heal and transform us, so that our joy and communion with him may be as complete as possible.

For Our Transformation “Nothing unclean” will enter heaven, says Revelation 21:27; this is not because God doesn’t want us there or refuses to associate with us fallen creatures. Rather, this follows on the nature of things: sin – or any of its vestigial effects – hinders our union with him; it hinders our intimacy and joy with him. Purgatory, in other words, is precisely because of how much God loves us. Any judge can acquit a defendant; but salvation is about far more than that – it’s about adoption into the family of God and sharing in his very life.

God begins his great work of our transformation of us in this life; if left incomplete upon death, he will complete the process of making us into glorious saints after death – that’s what we mean by purgatory, which is not a “second chance” or a half-way house. Rather, purgatory is for those who die in friendship with Christ, but not yet completely transformed and purified (see CCC 1030). A canonised saint, on the other hand, is one who fully underwent that process of transformation in this life, and the miracles wrought at their intercession is a divine sign that this is in fact the case.

Paying the Last Penny Because for most of us God’s transforming in us is not fished upon death, from the beginning the Church has prayed for the dead. In fact, there is clear Jewish precedent

in the century or two leading up to Christ; speaking of Judas Maccabeus and the action he took on behalf of the dead in battle, we read: “Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.” (2 Macc 12:4) Analogously, St Paul speaks of some being “saved,” “but only as through fire” (1 Cor 3:15).

Both of these texts speak of continued atonement or purification after death – which means that upon death, it’s not just heaven or hell. It means, in other words, that for many God completes his work of transformation after death.

Similarly, Jesus speaks cryptically about sin and its effects, leading to imprisonment – in which one does not get out until they “have paid the last penny” (Mt 5:25-26).

Getting out of this metaphorical prison implies that Jesus is not speaking about hell here. Non-biblical Jewish texts (besides 2 Macc) clearly attest to a place of redemptive suffering, a “purgatory,” of sorts, which Matthew here seems to be picking up on.

Remember the Dead The point of debt-bondage in the ancient world (which is the background for Matthew’s metaphor) is not to lock someone away indefinitely, but to coerce funds from family or friends (see Nathan Eubank’s Wages of Cross-bearing, 59). In Jewish Scripture and tradition, debt becomes a key analogue for sin – our bondage to sin – an analogue which shows up in the Our Father (see Matthew 6:9-13). The ability to “pay” this debt both in this life and the next expresses symbolically how God is addressing the temporal consequences of sin, both in this life (for example, through penance) and the next (in purgatory).

This backdrop is why it was so natural for the early Church to pray for the dead, as St Monica famously asked her son to remember her at the altar when she died (see St Augustine’s Confessions, book IX, ch. 11). Similarly, St John Chrysostom says the following in the fourth century: “Let us help and commemorate them [i.e., the deceased]. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.” (cited in CCC 1032) Done out of Love Thus, from the beginning the Church has seen the need and tremendous value in praying for the dead. It is an act of charity, one that was likely more intuitive and self-evident in more traditional cultures, where the “family” was far more than one’s immediate relatives. In the Family of God, the Church, our immediate families are caught up in the life of the pilgrim Church on earth, the Church suffering in purgatory, and the Church triumphant in heaven – all three together are united in Christ and form the Church, the Bride and Body of Christ. Death does not sever this union – anybody connected to the vine is connected to one another (see Jn 15:1-5).

We pray for the dead not out of fear, but out of love. We trust in God’s mercy; and we trust in his saving plan which is about far more than mere forgiveness of sins. It’s about the infusion of divine life to heal and elevate our fallen natures, making us sons and daughters in the Eternal Son – to share in his filial relation to the Father (see CCC 460). Moral perfection could not earn one drop of this divine life. But this is exactly what the gospel is all about.

Uniting Heaven and Earth Finally, let’s keep in mind this bond of loving communion that unites us with the fallen in Christ: we should have great confidence that our prayers for them will be returned in a special way. Only God and the saints know how vital and powerful our prayers have been for those in purgatory; surely, they will not forget this kindness when they reach their glorious union with God. We are then assured of their loving prayers in return, which no doubt have a far greater effect upon our lives than we realise.

As we eat our Halloween candy, we should remind our children of Halloween’s theological roots – for it is the Eve of All Saints (this is not to say that we shouldn’t trick or treat). As we approach All Soul’s Day, we should not shy away from the reality of death; in fact, in Christ, we need no longer fear death. It’s certainly worth visiting a cemetery with children, in order to pray for the dead and to face the reality of death with unabridged Christian faith.

How can we grow in communion with the dead in Christ, all of the faithful departed, but especially our loved ones who have gone before us? How can we grow in our love of them – not just by remembering them, but praying earnestly for them, especially at Mass.

This is particularly true: for the Mass unites heaven and earth.

Malaysian Catholic Youth Ministers in solidarity to serve young people

The MCYMC team of youth and campus ministers with Archbishop Simon Poh and Archbishop Julius Dusin (centre) SANDAKAN — Helen Keller said, “Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” In the same spirit, youth ministers of the Malaysian Catholic Youth Ministers Committee (MCYMC) from all the Catholic dioceses in Malaysia, convened for their annual meeting and retreat in Sandakan on 23-28 September.

The meeting started with a 2-day retreat focusing on Pope Francis’ exhortation to the young people: “Christus Vivit” and the servant leadership of youth and campus ministers.

The Episcopal Commission MCYMC comprising full time youth

and campus ministers are directly responsible for pastoral care and faith formation of the young people and their respective dioceses. With the increasing number of higher education institutions in Malaysia, the ministry in the campus has become even more urgent and pressing. Thus, this annual meeting sought to strengthen solidarity and collaboration between the dioceses, evaluating past programmes to address and respond to the needs of our young people today.

In this meeting each diocese shared on programmes conducted in the past year, faith and leadership formation camps, youth

forums and outreach programmes’ mission trips to communities in need.

We learned from each other and were enriched by one another’s best practices for journeying with our young people.

MCYMC evaluated the 3rd Malaysian Catholic Campus Student’s Day (MCCSD3), held this year from the 3-8 June in the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu, participated by 700 young Catholic students from higher education institutions all over the country.

MCYMC also discussed organising the first Malaysian Youth Day (MYD) for all young people, together with the 4th Malaysian

Catholic Student’s Day, slated to take place in 2021. Both events will be part of the journey for young people towards the envisioned national Pan Malaysian Pastoral Convention scheduled in 2026.

Archbishop Simon Poh from Kuching, as the Bishop-in-charge of youth and campus in Malaysia, encouraged the MCYMC youth and campus ministers to bring Pope Francis’ words in “Christus Vivit” to all young people that “Christ is alive and he wants you to be alive!” (CV 1) and that our “young people are the NOW of God!” (CV 64).

教宗新書解讀生態挑戰從信仰角度帶出環保視野 （梵蒂冈新闻讯）梵蒂冈 书局出版社十月廿四日在意大 利和法国，推出教宗方济各的 新书《我们的大地母亲──从 基督信仰观点解读生态挑战》 。教宗在新书中指出，众人必 须请求并施予宽恕，才能克服 当前的生态危机；而唯有在圣 神内，才能实现宽恕。 正教会巴尔多禄茂宗主教 为此书撰写序言，意大利《 晚邮报》刊登了此书摘要。教 宗在新书中写道，一切在善 内、在爱内彼此息息相关（参 阅：《愿祢受赞颂》通谕，42 号、56号）；正因如此，只要 缺乏爱，一切都会受到影响。 新书摘要指出，当前的生 态危机首先是人们以病态的 目光看待自己、他人、世界和 时间的后果之一，这令众人无 法察觉到天主赐予的恩典，难 以发现自己是被爱的；这是 一份真实的爱，有时它透过意 想不到的方式来到我们身边，

第54届世界社會傳播日： 「好叫你講給你的子孫聽」，生活創造歷史

教宗擢升13位新枢机：以憐憫心懷為基督作見證 （梵蒂冈新闻网）教宗 方济各10月5日下午在圣伯多 禄大殿主持公开枢密会议， 擢升13位新枢机。来自五大 洲的代表团出席了这项隆重 典礼。新枢机中，8位属于传 教修会，10位有选举教宗的权 利，3位则超过80岁，因而丧 失了这个权利。教宗向新枢机 们表示，「让我们祈求怀有怜 悯心肠的恩宠，成为以慈悲注 视我们那一位的见证人」。 教宗在礼仪讲道中以耶 稣的「怜悯」为核心，阐述教 会牧人应有的态度。教宗说， 「怜悯是《福音》的关键词， 它铭刻在耶稣的心中」。我们 越是诵读、默想《福音》中耶 稣怜悯受苦者的事迹，我们就 越加了解「上主的怜悯并非偶 发行为，时有时无，而是从不 间断」。因此，怜悯是耶稣的 心态，是天主慈悲的体现。 接著，教宗举出耶稣怜 悯受苦者的具体实例。耶稣开 始在加里肋亚宣讲天国，驱除 魔鬼，「有一个癞病人来到耶 稣跟前，跪下求祂说：『祢若 愿意，就能洁净我。』耶稣动 了怜悯的心，就伸手抚摸他， 向他说：『我愿意，你洁净了 罢！』」（谷一40-42）。教 宗解释道，在耶稣上述的言行 中蕴含了祂救赎人类的使命， 祂是怜悯慈悲的救主。 「耶稣承行天主的旨 意，洁净人类因罪恶而患的癞 病；祂是『天主伸出的手』， 祂抚摸我们患病的肉身，以这 行动填平那使我们分离的深

（古晋讯）2019年10月20 日下午，傅云生总主教在古晋 浮罗岸圣彼得堂区主任陈初旸 神父的陪同下，为新的圣彼得 堂地盘举行破土及祝圣礼仪。 举行祝圣礼仪前，傅总主教、 陈神父与新堂承建公司负责人 签署了建筑合同。约百位教 友，包括堂区牧灵议会成员， 承建公司人员，绘测师等出席 观礼。 祝圣礼仪中，傅总主教

在新堂地段洒圣水，象征天主 降福，并祈求天主保佑所有在 该地段工作的人们。 陈初旸神父透露，新圣 彼得堂的设计是他从世界各地 的教堂获得的灵感的汇集。陈 神父原是读绘测学。他说，设 计该新堂最首要的考量是确 保信众能有一个适合的崇拜 环境。原来的圣彼得堂首建于 1949年，只能容纳八百人。鉴 于日益增长的天主教徒到教堂 参 与 礼 仪，特别 是逢教会 大节日， 建 更 大 的教堂是 必须的。 此 外 ， 原来的教 堂的地基 傅云生总主教与新堂承建公司负责人签署承包合同。 已开始不

18:9-14），默想后也为协会的 需要祈祷。 会长萧凤娥在会上致词， 首先恭喜得奖者，她以当日的 福音劝勉他们不因金闪闪的奖 杯而炫耀，却要如耶稣比喻中 的税吏的谦卑才是耶稣喜悦的 信徒。她也介绍了今年特别推 展「99全情起动新约读经」的 活动，多位教友报名参加，并 完成了此项读新约运动，获得

（西连讯）此间圣德莉 莎堂区卅九位牧灵议会之乐齡 组 (CSCF) 成員及朋友组成朝圣 团，于十月七日启程朝中砂至 北砂五间教堂朝圣。 西连堂区主管博亨利神 父为此朝圣团之指导神师，和 该组主席欧分受斯纳明共同領 导。 参加此朝圣团者也包括 该组顾问兼堂区牧灵议会主席 宋文囯，该组副主席哈利生卡 东，財政史帝芬卡戈，新闻发 佈主任邓亚玉和该堂区议会財 政楊西满等人。 此朝圣团並非覌光团，主 旨是与主同在，共同赞美主。 其主要活动是望弥撒，念玫瑰 经及上主慈悲串经。所以在主 要任务完成后才可自由活动。 十月七日早上，所有参加 者在圣德莉莎堂前集合，由博 亨利神父领导祈祷祈求天主祝 福大家一路平安，八时正启程向 詩巫进发，团员们在巴士里念玫 瑰经，上主慈悲经及唱圣歌。 朝圣团于十月八日早上 抵达詩巫圣心教堂时，受到李 福財副主教，堂区主管许守发 神父和乐齡组主席邱广基先生 等人迎接。在念完玫瑰经和参 与了由西连堂区主管博亨利神 父主祭的弥撒后，团員们受邀 在乐齡组会议厅，两个乐齡组 组织互相交換意見。邱广基主 席介绍诗巫乐齡组已成立卅多 年，共有三百多位会员，时常 组团到国內外各地旅遊。会 后，该乐齡组邀请朝圣团员共 进午餐。隆情厚谊，团員们都 誠心感激。午餐过后，便整装 向木膠前进。 十月九日早上，团员们在 木膠的圣伯铎和圣保禄教堂念 玫瑰经和参与由博亨利神父主 祭的弥撒后，即离别了木膠继 续旅程前往美里。 十月十日早上，团员们在 美里的圣若瑟主教座堂念玫瑰 经和参与弥撒。正当大家要离

开时，Selvister Ngau神父前来 向团员们一一握手道別。朝圣 团于午餐过后离开美里前往林 夢。 抵达林夢时，团员们受 到堂区主管黄业強神父的热情 欢迎款待，邀请团员们在Saint Edmund 教堂与当地各族主内 兄弟姐妹们同念玫瑰经。然 后共进晚餐及欣赏歌唱舞蹈节 目，大家尽兴而归。 十月十一日早上，黄业強 神父把弥撒地点改在 Liot Batu 的圣若望教堂举行。黄神父表 示: 圣若望教堂地点是有历史 性的。在50多年前，住在此处 的必砂雅族(Bisaya)人陆续皈 依天主教; 此处有一名神父和 两位修女服务当地社群，不久 前，吴对龙主教主持了圣玛丽 亚塑像的加冕仪式，当时引来 很多来自远近的主內兄弟姐妹 和友人覌礼。 团员们念完玫瑰经，参与 由黄业強神父和博亨利神父共 祭的弥撒后，便跟当地的教友 们共进午餐，然后跟随黄神父 到数公里外的Liot Qua参观在 山坡上拟议中的退省大厦地点 及其山下的美景。此大厦急需 筹款完成。別了黄神父，团员 们便往民都鲁前进。 十月十二日早上，团员们 在民都鲁的海洋之星堂念完玫 瑰经及参与弥撒后，即告别民 都鲁和堂区主管鍾松錦神父， 步上回程路。抵达西连圣德莉 莎堂时，已是午夜十二点卅分 了。 团员们感谢天主的賜佑， 在行程中有着很好的天气，人 人健康平安。团员们也很庆 幸，在整个行程中感受到忍 耐，谅解和友情的乐趣。 多位团员促请有关当局， 在新的泛婆大道两旁，每隔两 叁小时驾驶路程，建一休息 处，備有完整淸潔的洗手间， 以方便州内外遊客和道路使用 者。（邓亚玉报导）

聖詠 在圣咏第三到第十一篇的 一系列个别哀祷诗之后，圣咏 咏唱者在第十二篇圣咏（或按 圣经希腊文本是第十一篇）中 提供了一篇团体哀祷诗。 评述 该圣咏的标题写的是「达 味诗歌，交与楽官，八度低 音。」原文中的Sheminith是 指数字的八，被翻译成拉丁文 Pro Octavo。可能是表示这篇 圣咏的礼仪咏唱方式。 在结构上，圣咏第十二篇 以团体呼唤上主开始和结束（ 第1和第7段）。第一到第四段 叙述他们呼求上主的原因。第 五段提供了上主迅速的回应， 第六段对这段作出反思。在 他们的恳求的结尾处，团体感 觉到上主的介入的信心（第7 段），虽然他们仍然经验着恶 人的恶行（第8段）。 第一段开头是「上主，求 祢拯救」，表达了团体从一 个欠缺 ḥāsîd（=热心的人） 和 ’ěmûnîm（忠诚的人）的社 会发出的救赎呼求（第1段） 。因为他们和上主之间、标志 着热心和忠诚的盟约，面对着 彻底破碎的危机。没有了那些 盟约的特征，虚假就会取而代 之。藉着「口唇圆滑」（假意 的称赞）和「口是心非」（ 假意的交往）（第2段）来体 现。当虚假盛行，信任遁形， 团体于是面对彻底覆灭的严重 威胁就不用说了。 因此，第三段就是向上主 「将一切欺诈的口唇除去」和 「把大言不慚的舌頭剪除」的 祈求。欺诈的口唇唱的是对别 人的空泛赞美。大言不惭的舌 头吹捧自己。那些充满虚假的 人谋求支配别人。第四段将他 们的企图清楚地用两个方法表 达。第一, 他们谋求「以口以 舌取胜」, 就是, 以花言巧语赢 得人心；第二，他们自夸地 宣称：「我们有口有唇護衛我 们，谁能作我们的主人﹖」他 们不管盟约, 拒绝上主作他们的 主和天主, 自大地努力取代祂。 他们明显地必须完全被除去, 以 拯救整个盟约团体不致覆灭。

以一朵花讚美她

夏長福榮休總主教 上主宣称：「我要立刻站 起,将渴望救援的人救起」(第5 段) 。「救赎」这字表示上主 的宣称作为祂对那团体的呼 求---第一段中「上主，求祢拯 救」---的决定性回应。上主看 到了那团体作为「贫穷者和穷 困者」被自大的骗子毁灭的危 险（第5段）。祂的一个重要的 属性是祂对贫穷者和穷困者的 关注，特别是当他们在痛苦中 「呻吟」，有如当祂听到在埃 及奴役中的以色列人的呻吟所 体现的（参阅出2:23-25）。 第六段肯定第五段中上主 的宣称的「纯度」。「经过了 七次的锻炼」，它完全是真实 的，与那些谋求取代上主者的 「口唇圆滑」和「口是心非」 所散播的虚假形成鲜明的对 比。那团体因此被引导完全相 信上主将如祂所宣称的那样拯 救他们（第7段），虽然「惡 人仍在四周往來追蹤」（第8a 段）。恶人就是那些充满虚假 的人：他们「實如令人生厭的 毒蟲」（第8b段）。 讯息 天主的子民是祂以盟约密 封的。他们遇到许多的对手。 其中有藉着甜言蜜语和那些毫 无顾忌地支配别人来谋求赢取 他们的人。圣咏第十二篇明显 地藉着他们的修辞问题「谁能 作我们的主人﹖」暴露他们的 野心。他们利用欺诈的途径来 达到他们生命中和社会中的目 的：取代上主。 然而上主，唯独祂，是真 主。祂说出真理，并藉着真理 从祂的子民的对手拯救他们。 可见圣咏第十二篇影射的盟 约，真理首先是上主听到人们 在埃及奴役时的呻吟和呼求而 来拯救他们。然后，祂和他们 立下盟约，祂使他们作祂的子 民而祂作他们的天主。在祂对 他们的挚爱中，祂坚定不移地 忠于他们。因此，祂的子民的 团体只有藉着保持对祂如对唯 一的真主和天主般坚定不移和 忠诚才能经得住他们的敌人的 攻击。他们和祂的盟约才将保 持不变。

基督的意义 虚假和真理之间的冲突联 想起耶稣在若8:44-45中的话。 对那些和祂对抗的人，耶稣说 了一段长长的话。其中一部分这 样断言：「你们是出于你们的父 亲魔鬼，並愿意追随你们父亲 的欲望。从起初，他就是杀人 的兇手，不站在真理上，因为在 他內沒有真理；他几时撒谎，正 出于他的本性，因为他是撒谎 者，而且又是撒谎者的父親。 至于我，因为我說真理，你们 卻不信我。」魔鬼藉着虚假赢 得耶稣的敌人来使他们和耶稣 对抗，因为祂说的是真理。 谎言的父亲全力以赴要毁 灭耶稣---「道路、真理和生 命」（若14:6）。他将这放进 祂最亲密的门徒圈子中的一个 成员犹达斯的心中来毁灭祂（ 若13:27）。犹达斯对他的主人 的背叛启动了魔鬼的计谋得逞 的开始。那时候，耶稣的敌人 仿佛占着上风。他们拘捕和审 讯祂。他们甚至把祂带到比拉 多---罗马皇帝在当地的代表， 最高的民事权力面前，来批准 他们将祂钉死十字架的要求。 在回应比拉多的询问时， 耶稣宣称，「我为此而生，我 也为此而来到世界上，为给真 理作证：凡属于真理的，必听 从我的声音。」（若18:37-38 ）。无法在祂身上找到罪状 后，比拉多给耶稣的敌人一个 选择，是选择释放祂或是巴辣 巴，一个强盗。人们选了巴辣 巴，因了他们对虚假的选择。 真理耶稣最终被谎言的父 亲的代理钉死十字架。虚假胜 利了，但只是那么一会儿。 最终，真理必胜。当耶稣---真 理，胜利地从死者中复活，它 就发生了。祂的复活是祂的父 的介入在祂对祂的子民救赎的 许诺完全忠诚的见证。 耶稣的复活肯定是父对祂 的子民团体在圣咏第十二篇中 「上主，求你拯救！」呼求的 回应。这很清楚是基督的一个 回应。藉着祂的复活，真理基 督从谎言的父亲魔鬼的毁灭拯 救了信者。

（古晋讯）古晋总主教 座堂宝光村圣母无原罪始胎 之后家庭玫瑰经团于10月22 日晚间8时正，假团员田镜中 与黄秀凤夫妇府上举行一台 庆祝该团成立38周年的感恩 弥撒，邀请在百忙中抽空来 的陈章喜神父主祭。陈神父 当晚也循例为主人家祝福房 子。出席者除了主人阖家与 本团团员外，主人也邀请了 亲朋好友共同欢庆。 弥撒中陈神父证道时 说，首先恭喜本团每周二在 一起诵念玫瑰经能维持了38

年，也祝愿天主继续眷顾看 守，陈神父接着说，房屋是 一座建筑物，供人住或休息的 地方。家则是给家庭成员生活 的住所。因为爱使家庭成员相 聚在一起。如果要得到幸福快 乐，那么就要善待周围身边的 人，尤其是要善待和你朝夕相 处共度一生的人，因为他们是 你生命的一部分，他们快乐， 你也快乐；他们痛苦，你也痛 苦，所以大家彼此都以耶稣基 督教导---严以律己，宽以待人 去善度教友生活。 陈神父接着又引申福音

说：人生各自的工作岗位都必 须整装待发的状态。譬如：从 事医生的一定要穿上医生的白 袍制服并佩戴医学用具，全副 武装才能展现医德形象去服务 病人。同样的在圣经中也启示 天人关系，用主仆图像来教导 门徒精神和态度，时常警醒和 祈祷而以主动的态度，敏感地 体验主的意愿并喜乐地回应服 侍。主耶稣现今还亲自在圣 体圣事中以仆人的身份伺候我 们分享祂的圣体圣血，使我们 与祂合而为一。由此可见，我 们这些「仆人」是多有福的， 因此提醒我们为天国喜作装备 福音所教导的精神；反之，那 些不能未雨绸缪和防患于未然 的人，只能被动的等待命运来 到，浪费天主所恩赐的自由。 弥撒后，陈神父与团员同 切周年蛋糕，并享用众团员所 准备的丰富又美味佳肴。 （李永国报导）

Guido, alat Tuhan untuk kebangkitan rohani di Baram

Saya tidak tahu apa yang menanti saya ketika saya berlepas ke Sarawak selepas pentahbisan saya pada 29 Jun 1969.

Sebagai seorang pelajar di Mill Hill, saya cuba mempelajari banyak perkara tentang India, Pakistan dan Chile. Sebab itulah saya terkejut apabila saya ditugaskan ke Keuskupan Miri di Sarawak. Vikar Jeneral Father Noel Hanrahan menjelaskan bahawa mereka sudah agak lama membincangkan penugasan saya, dan semua bersetuju bahawa saya sesuai sekali untuk orang di Borneo.

Hingga ke hari ini, saya hanya dapat memanjatkan kesyukuran kepada Tuhan kerana Dia telah memberikan kepada saya ketua-ketua yang berusaha untuk menjaga kepentingan saya yang terbaik.

Ketika itu, saya tidak tahu bahawa saya akan kembali sebanyak tiga kali dan menabur bakti selama 18 tahun kepada jemaat yang saya kini sayangi seperti jemaat saya sendiri. Jika boleh, saya masih mahu berada di sana.

Ketika saya menulis tentang kehidupan misionari saya di Malaysia, ia adalah dengan rasa syukur bagi apa yang telah diberikan oleh berbagai kaum di Borneo, dan bagaimana mereka telah membentuk hidup saya sebagai seorang paderi dan misionari.

Tempat penugasan saya yang pertama di keuskupan Miri adalah di Long Luyang selepas saya tiba pada Januari 1970.

Long Luyang merupakan sebuah paroki hulu sungai kira-kira lapan jam dari Marudi, bandar utama dan pusat membeli-belah, di mana kami akan mendapatkan bekalan makanan dan minuman yang diperlukan selain surat-surat kami sekali setiap dua atau tiga bulan.

Rumah misi begitu purba sekali. Sebuah struktur kayu yang sederhana tanpa siling, bumbung yang bocor, dan kami menggunakan lampu tekanan gas pada waktu malam.

Di luar, sebuah pelantar kayu di depan beberapa buah dram, yang digunakan untuk mengumpul air hujan, bertindak sebagai bilik mandi. Tidak jauh di bawah bukit itu adalah sebuah tandas parit terbuka.

Pada mulanya, ia sedikit menakutkan kerana saya tidak pernah tinggal di hutan, dalam sebuah rumah dengan ruang di antara lantai dan papan dinding. Semua jenis makhluk dapat masuk dengan bebas, malah saya begitu terkejut sekali apabila suatu hari, seekor ular merayap di atas kaki saya!

Mempelajari bahasa ternyata tidak mudah. Di Long Luyang terdapat sekurangkurangnya lima bahasa tidak ada tulisan yang pelbagai selain dialek-dialeknya.

Bagaimanapun, selepas kira-kira tiga bulan, saya dapat berbual sedikit.

Ketika Uskup [Anthony Denis] Galvin bertanya kepada saya bagaimana perkembangan saya dalam usaha mempelajari bahasa Melayu, saya memberitahunya bahawa saya dapat membuat orang lain memahami saya, dan beliau berkata “‘tidak memahami’ mungkin ungkapan yang lebih baik”. Ia ternyata amat benar sekali.

Apabila kami melawat rumah panjang, kami turut membawa ubat-ubatan bersama kami. Keperluan itu memang ada kerana orang begitu tersisih sekali dari klinik atau hospital terdekat.

Ketika saya mengembara ke Long Liau, saya berjumpa dengan orang Penan.

Mereka merupakan kaum yang berpindah-randah atau separa nomad dan tinggal di kawasan hulu sungai dengan nama jolokan “the gentlemen of the jungle” (lelakilelaki hutan yang budiman).

Bahasa mereka hampir sama dengan bahasa Sebop, yang saya dapat tutur dengan agak baik. Maka itu, saya tidak ada kesukaran untuk bercakap dengan mereka.

Ketua kampung di penempatan Penan memberitahu saya bahawa mereka mahu menjadi Kristian kerana saya tahu bahasa mereka. Lalu saya menjemput semua ketua kampung dari rumah panjang lain untuk menyertai saya ke hulu sungai dan “membuang adat”, membantu penduduk Penan di sana memeluk agama Katolik.

Kisah orang Penan adalah kisah yang sedih. Oleh kerana mereka hidup begitu jauh di hulu sungai dan kerana tiada paderi, mereka jarang sekali dilawati. Maka itu misionari Injili yang lebih bergantung kepada pelayan awam mengambil kesempatan dan mendorong mereka untuk menyertai gereja mereka.

Sementara itu, industri pembalakan yang diusahakan oleh pengaut keuntungan berbangsa Jepun, Korea dan China, menindas kaum Penan, dan kita boleh katakan secara umumnya bahawa kaum Penan adalah kaum yang hanyut.

Keluarga Penan amat erat sekali, dengan kebergantungan yang tinggi kepada satu sama lain untuk kelangsungan hidup.

Selepas mereka menerima agama Katolik, saya merasai keperluan untuk menghantar anak-anak mereka ke sekolah. Sekolah berada begitu jauh sekali dari rumah, di hilir sungai. Menghantar mereka ke sana akan memecah-belah keluarga mereka yang harmoni.

Selepas berfikir panjang lebar, saya merumuskan bahawa saya tidak harus menghalang proses pembangunan yang perlu ini, dan Yesus akan membantu mereka mengharungi fasa ini dalam kehidupan mereka.

Selepas saya memikirkan ini, persoalan timbul bagi saya, tetapi di manakah Yesus?

Ketika saya seorang kanak-kanak, saya rasa sangat dekat denganNya, tetapi pada peringkat ini dalam hidup saya, saya tidak merasai kedekatanNya. Nasib kanak-kanak Penan mendorong saya untuk mencariNya. Ia ternyata satu

pencarian yang lama, dan ketika saya bercuti di negara asal saya, saya diperkenalkan kepada satu kegilaan pada waktu itu “Transcendental Meditation”.

Saya mempelajari teknik-teknik meditasi dan penafasan mereka dengan yakin dan seluruh set buku. Saya kembali ke Sarawak tetapi hanya menemui kekosongan dan bukan Fr Guido bersama Uskup Yesus.

Richard Ng dari Miri Selepas saya kembali ke Miri, Uskup Galvin mahu menugaskan saya ke Long Lama, sebuah paroki seorang paderi, lima jam dengan menaiki bot dari tempat rakan paderi saya yang terdekat.

Kami, paderi Mill Hill, berhak untuk ditugaskan secara berpasangan. Maka itu saya boleh menolak pelantikan ini.

Uskup, yang tahu mengenai perkara ini, menyambut saya sambil berdiri dengan mengangkat tangannya di pintu dan berkata, “Tolong jangan kata tidak.”

Beliau menjelaskan apa yang telah berlaku.

Di Long Lama, sebuah pergerakan Injili dari Indonesia telah menimbulkan masalah yang besar, dengan khutbah mengenai hari kiamat yang bakal berlaku dan kedatangan Yesus yang kedua kali.

Penduduk di sana menyahut dengan membuang harta pusaka dan wang mereka ke dalam sungai, dan ramai orang Katolik meninggalkan Gereja untuk menyertai mereka. Kanak-kanak tidak lagi pergi ke sekolah, tetapi memenuhi masa mereka dengan berdoa dan bernyanyi sepanjang malam dalam kebaktian rohani.

Uskup merasakan saya dapat sekurang-kurangnya membawa balik kanak-kanak tersebut ke gereja.

Dengan rasa takut dan gementar, saya menerima tugasan ini, sambil bergantung kepada komitmen doa harian saya untuk memelihara saya.

Ia nampaknya berkesan, ramai kanak-kanak tersebut kembali ke gereja dan pergerakan Injili berkenaan mula pudar.

Bagaimanapun, selepas kira-kira setahun, kehidupan di paroki dan terutamanya aspek perjalanan telah menjadi semakin membebankan.

Ketegangan dan beberapa salah faham di antara uskup dengan diri saya menyebabkan ‘empangan’ pecah dalam satu perbualan telefon, yang memaksa saya untuk berjumpa dengan beliau di Miri.

Saya tidak akan melupai waktu saya tiba. Beliau berdiri di sana, di pintu masuk dewan paroki dengan kedua-dua tangannya terbuka luas, memeluk saya, meminta maaf, dan menyuruh saya untuk bercuti selama dua minggu di Sabah.

Apabila saya tiba di Kota Kinabalu, saya disambut oleh Father Tobias Chi, paderi paroki Katedral Sacred Heart, yang menyuruh saya menyimpan bagasi saya dan pergi ke dewan.

“Saya pasti,” katanya, “anda mahu meluangkan masa anda bersama golongan muda ini.”

Satu lembaran yang sama sekali baharu bermula dalam hidup saya: Pembaharuan Karismatik.

Pembaharuan Karismatik telah diperkenalkan kepada Kota Kinabalu oleh Fr Chi. Beliau merupakan seorang lelaki spiritual, yang bangun setiap hari sekitar jam 4.00 pagi, belajar selama dua jam sebelum beliau memulakan doa-doanya dan merayakan sembahyang Misa. Beliau sudah membiasakan diri dengan pergerakan karismatik yang menerima sambutan yang baik daripada belia paroki.

Saya berjumpa dengan golongan muda ini di dalam dewan untuk kelompok doa mereka. Saya terkejut melihat remaja-remaja berusia 15 dan 16 tahun ini seronok berdoa, bertepuk tangan, mengangkat tangan sambil menyanyikan “lagu-lagu agama jenis baharu”.

Pada satu ketika di kelompok doa itu, seseorang membaca kisah pertaubatan Paul.

Seorang remaja berambut panjang berdiri.

“Dengar”, katanya, “Yesus berkata, ‘Saul, Saul’ dua kali. Apabila Michael mencintai Ann, dia akan kata Ann, sebagai bentuk kasih sayang, sebanyak dua kali.

Maka itu apabila Yesus kata ‘Saul, Saul’, Dia menunjukkan kasihNya bagi dia”.

Ketika dia menjelaskan perkara ini, saya mendengar Yesus, dalam saya, berkata, “Guido, Guido, kenapakah kamu mencari Aku?” Akan bersambung di isu bulan Disember FR GUIDO GOCKEL

Fr Guido dilahirkan pada 12 Januari 1944 di Tilburg, Belanda. Ibu bapanya, seorang saudara dan lima saudari menyokong panggilan dan kepaderian misionari beliau menerusi kasih sayang dan galakan mereka.

Selepas sekolah-sekolah rendah dan menengah, beliau menyertai perkumpulan Persatuan St Joseph bagi Misi-Misi Asing (Misionari Mill Hill) pada 1 Mei 1968. Beliau bekerja selama 18 tahun di Keuskupan Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Beliau pernah menjadi pengarah Misi Pontifikal bagi Palestin di Yerusalem dan Tanah Suci, dan berkhidmat dalam pelbagai kapasiti bersama Persatuan Kebajikan Timur Dekat Katolik di pejabat mereka di New York.

Ingati mereka yang sudah tiada untuk mengukuhkan kehidupan

by Hosffman Ospino “Tiada yang pasti di dunia ini,” ibu saya selalu menyebut, “kecuali bagi hakikat bahawa suatu hari nanti, semua kita akan mati.”

Sesungguhnya kenyataan yang agak keras dan menginsafkan, namun kenyataan yang dengan bijaksana merangkul penerimaan batasan hidup yang mutlak.

Umur tua dan penyakit mungkin dua realiti yang lebih kerap mengingatkan kita tentang kehidupan kita yang fana.

Kekejaman keganasan dan peperangan terus menyebabkan – hampir tidak rasional – kematian ke atas ramai orang. Kesan kemiskinan, kelaparan dan keadaan hidup yang tidak baik memendekkan nyawa orang lain.

Kaya atau miskin, muda atau tua, pendatang atau warga negara, orang percaya ataupun tidak percaya, amat berpengaruh atau hampir halimunan dalam kalangan orang ramai yang tidak dikenali di bandar raya kita yang sedang berkembang pesat, kematian adalah ‘equaliser’ atau pengimbang yang hebat.

Pemikiran sedemikian adalah sama dengan penulis Kitab Pengkhutbah: “Nasib manusia dan nasib haiwan adalah sama: yang satu mati sama seperti yang satu lagi. Kedua-duanya memiliki nafas nyawa yang sama. Manusia tidak ada kelebihan ke atas haiwan, tetapi semua adalah sia-sia.” (3:19).

Pada bulan-bulan terakhir setiap tahun, umat Katolik merenungkan realiti kematian. Liturgi Gereja membawa kita Hari Arwah. Di kalangan masyarakat Katolik Hispanik, perayaan itu dikenali ramai sebagai “el Día de los Muertos” (Hari Orang Mati).

Ia bukan hari mengenai kematian sebagai satu idea yang abstrak atau tahyul semata-mata, tetapi tentang memperingati orang yang sudah mati dengan kepercayaan: saudaramara dan rakan-rakan yang sudah meninggal dunia, nenek moyang, orang yang dikenali dan tidak dikenali, santosanta, martir dan saksi.

Hari Orang Mati adalah mengenai memupuk perhubungan dengan mereka yang pernah hidup bersama kita dan sekarang hidup dengan cara berlainan.

Orang mati belum pergi sepenuhnya.

Selain dari Hari Krismas dan Gawai, Hari Memperingati Para Arwah adalah hari ‘wajib pulang ke kampung’ bagi sesetengah umat Katolik yang di perantauan. Ada yang pulang seminggu sebelum menjelang bulan November.

Tidak kurang juga yang mengambil cuti pada hari tersebut semata-mata untuk balik ke kampung, menziarahi makam dan mendoakan ibu bapa atau sanak saudara yang telah meninggal dunia.

Sesetangah tanah perkuburan bermandikan cahaya api lilin hampir sepanjang malam bulan November. Ahli keluarga orang yang sudah meninggal dunia datang pada setiap malam untuk menyalakan lilin dan menukar bunga yang sudah layu di makam ahli keluarga mereka.

Fikiran mereka tertumpu kepada ahli keluarga dan sanak saudara yang telah meninggal dunia dengan penuh harapan dan bukannya dalam kesedihan.

Yesus selalu mengulangi

mereka kekal dalam perhubungan dengan kami; mereka hidup dalam Tuhan.

Hari ini juga mengenai memupuk perhubungan dalam keluarga, kawasan kejiranan dan jemaat beriman seperti yang kita ingati. Kita hidup dengan rasa syukur bagi apa yang kita terima daripada mereka yang tidak lagi bersama kita. Kita hidup dengan inspirasi daripada legasi dan memori mereka.

Kita memperingati mereka yang sudah meninggal dunia untuk mengukuhkan kehidupan: kehidupan sebagai anugerah dari Tuhan di mana kita menjadi hadir kepada satu sama lain dalam sejarah.

perkara tersebut kepada pengikut-pengikut-Nya. Kepada Martha yang sedang berkabung atas kematian saudaranya Lazarus, Yesus mengisytiharkan bahawa sesiapa yang percaya kepada-Nya “tidak akan mati selama-lamanya” (Yoh.11:26).

Selain daripada itu, Yesus juga memberi jaminan bahawa “Di dalam rumah Bapa-Ku ada banyak tempat tinggal” (Yoh. 14:2).

Kemeriahan Hari Memperingati Para Arwah menjadikan Pesta Semua Orang Kudus seolah-olah ‘kurang diambil perhatian’. Saya pernah menyatakan perkara tersebut kepada seorang rakan paderi dan secara bergurau dia menyatakan, “Orang Kudus sudah menjadi penghuni syurga dan tidak memerlukan doa kita yang masih hidup. Itulah sebabnya orang ramai lebih menumpukan perhatian terhadap keselamatan ahli keluarga mereka yang sudah meninggal daripada Orang Kudus.”

Kehidupan dalam Yesus Kristus, juga anugerah dari Tuhan yang tidak pernah berakhir dan tidak putus-putus mengubah semua yang wujud, termasuk alam ciptaan.

Hari Orang Mati merupakan tanda harapan yang tulen. Lebih tepat lagi, harapan kepada kebangkitan. Saya takjub dengan jumlah keluarga dan masyarakat Hispanik yang begitu ramai merayakan Hari Arwah sebagai ‘Día de los Muertos’ dengan kesyukuran yang begitu mendalam dan rasa pesta.

Ramai orang Katolik, mungkin dipengaruhi ketakutan dan salah faham mengenai kematian yang diletakkan oleh kebudayaan ke atas kita, cenderung memikirkan tentang kematian pada amnya sebagai kesedihan, kehilangan dan pengasingan.

Dari perspektif itu, ia sememangnya masuk akal bahawa kita mahu mengelaknya atau tidak mempedulikan apa-apa yang ada kaitan dengannya.

Bagaimanapun Hari Orang Mati, dengan pengesahannya mengenai kemenangan kehidupan ke atas kematian, perayaan perhubungan yang mengaitkan perkara yang kelihatan dengan perkara yang tidak kelihatan, dan lambang berwarna-warni yang menggambarkan ciri pesta yang sentiasa ada dalam budaya Hispanik, menceritakan kisah yang berbeza.

Memperingati orang mati dengan rasa gembira adalah sifat yang pada asasnya adalah Kristian. Dalam Kristus, orang hidup dan orang mati ada bahagian dalam persekutuan para kudus. Dalam Kristus, sebarang rasa bahawa kematian adalah muktamad tidak ada lagi. Kehidupan adalah muktamad.

November itu adalah hari sembahyang kubur. Mungkin itulah sebabnya orang ramai lebih memberi tumpuan di tanah perkuburan daripada di gereja.

Tidak kurang juga yang membawa makanan, minuman dan wang ke makam untuk dikongsikan dengan roh saudara mara mereka. Roh tidak memerlukan matawang Malaysia atau makanan duniawi. Roh memerlukan doa kita. Kita menyalakan lilin sebagai lambang Yesus adalah cahaya kehidupan (Yoh. 8:12).

Pesta Orang Kudus diadakan bagi menghormati dan mengenang pengorbanan mereka yang telah menjadi saksi cinta kasih Tuhan. Berkat kekuasaan rahmat Tuhan mereka telah mencapai tanah air yang abadi iaitu syurga. Semua orang yang berada di dalam Syurga menikmati kemuliaan Tuhan dan kebahagiaan abadi.

Kerajaan Syurga menjadi milik mereka kerana dalam kehidupan di dunia mereka telah hidup dan melayani dengan rendah hati.

Mereka tidak menjadi hamba

kepada harta benda duniawi tetapi memberi tumpuan yang sepenuhnya kepada kehendak Allah. Mereka menyayangi dan mengagumi segala ciptaan Allah dan tidak mementingkan diri sendiri.

Sejarah kehidupan Orang Kudus menunjukkan kepada kita bagaimana untuk mencari perkara yang benar-benar berharga dalam kehidupan.

Kini mereka menikmati kekayaan yang sebenar, kekayaan yang hanya Tuhan sahaja yang dapat berikan.

Kedua-dua perayaan di atas melambangkan harapan masa hadapan kita. Dalam prefasi Arwah I kita mengakui, “sebagai umat beriman kami yakin bahawa hidup hanyalah diubah, bukannya dilenyapkan; bahawa suatu kediaman abadi tersedia bagi kami di syurga bila pengembaraan kami di dunia ini berakhir”.

Rahmat dan belas kasih Tuhan menjadi sandaran kehidupan kita.

Siri renungan oleh Uskup Agung Emeritus John Ha. Tahun ini, kita akan merenungkan Mazmur.

Selepas siri ratapan individu dalam Mazmur 3-11, Psalterium menyajikan ratapan umat dalam Mazmur 12 (atau Mazmur 11 dalam Al-Kitab versi Yunani).

Komen Pendahuluan pada mazmur ini menyebut: “Kepada Pemimpin: Menurut Sheminith. Sebuah Mazmur Daud”. “Sheminith”, yang ada kaitan dengan nombor lapan, diterjemahkan kepada “Pro Octavo” dalam versi Latin. Ia kemungkinan besar menunjukkan satu kaedah untuk membaca mazmur dalam liturgi.

Dari segi struktur, Mazmur 12 bermula dan berakhir dengan jemaat yang bercakap kepada YHWH (ayat-ayat 1 dan 7). Ayat-ayat 1 hingga 4 mengemukakan alasan mereka bagi seruan mereka kepada YHWH. Ayat 5 memberikan jawapan YHWH yang cepat, dan ayat 6 pula memberikan renungan mengenainya. Di hujung ratapan mereka, jemaat rasa yakin tentang campur tangan YHWH (ayat 7), walaupun mereka masih mengalami kezaliman orang yang jahat (ayat 8).

Dua perkataan pertama dalam ayat 1, “Selamatkanlah, YHWH”, menyuarakan seruan jemaat bagi penyelamatan daripada masyarakat yang tidak ada ḥāsîd (= orang dengan kasih yang teguh) dan ’ěmûnîm (= orang beriman) (ayat 1). Kerana perjanjian mereka dengan YHWH, yang ditandai dengan kasih yang teguh dan kesetiaan, berdepan dengan risiko pelanggaran sepenuhnya. Tanpa sifat-sifat perjanjian ini, kepalsuan mengambil alih. Ia dimanifestasikan menerusi “bibir yang mengampu” (pujian palsu) dan “dua hati” (urusan palsu) (ayat 2). Sudah tentulah apabila kepalsuan berleluasa, kepercayaan lenyap dan jemaat berdepan dengan ancaman kemusnahan sepenuhnya yang serius.

Maka itu, ayat 3 adalah doa agar YHWH “memotong semua bibir yang mengampu” dan “lidah yang bercakap besar”. Bibir yang mengampu menyanyikan pujian yang kosong kepada orang lain. Lidah yang bercakap besar mengampu diri sendiri. Mereka yang dicemari kepalsuan cuba mendominasi orang lain. Ayat 4 menjelaskan cubaan mereka dalam dua cara.

Pertama sekali, mereka cuba “menang dengan lidah mereka”, iaitu, menawan hati orang dengan mengampu mereka. Kedua, mereka mahu menguasai orang lain apabila mereka dengan bangga mengisytiharkan, “Bibir kami adalah milik kami – siapakah Tuhan kami?”

Tanpa mempedulikan perjanjian, mereka telah menolak YHWH sebagai Tuhan dan Allah mereka dan dengan bongkak berusaha untuk mengambil alih daripadaNya. Jelas sekali, mereka perlu dibuang sepenuhnya untuk menyelamatkan seluruh umat perjanjian daripada kemusnahan.

YHWH mengisytiharkan, “Aku kini akan bangkit. Aku akan meletakkan mereka di dalam penyelamatan yang mereka rindukan” (ayat 5). Perkataan “penyelamatan” menunjukkan deklarasi YHWH sebagai jawapanNya yang tegas kepada seruan umat, “Selamatkanlah, YHWH,” dalam ayat 1. YHWH melihat umat, yang diancam dengan kemusnahan oleh pendusta yang bongkak, sebagai “golongan miskin dan memerlukan bantuan” (ayat 5).

Satu ciriNya yang penting ialah komitmenNya kepada golongan miskin dan memerlukan bantuan, terutamanya apabila mereka “meratap” dalam penderitaan, seperti yang dimanifestasikan apabila Dia mendengar ratapan bangsa Israel dalam perhambaan di Mesir (Keluaran 2:23-25).

[Umat Allah] bertemu dengan ramai musuh. Di antara mereka adalah golongan yang mahu menawan hati mereka menerusi kata-kata manis selain mereka yang tidak segan-silu menguasai orang lain.

Ayat 6 mengesahkan “kesucian” deklarasi YHWH dalam ayat 5. “Disucikan tujuh kali”, ia adalah benar sama sekali dan menonjol dengan begitu kontras sekali dengan kepalsuan yang disebarkan oleh “bibir yang mengampu” dan “lidah yang bercakap besar” milik golongan yang mahu mengambil alih dari YHWH. Maka itu umat dibimbing kepada keyakinan yang sepenuhnya bahawa YHWH akan menyelamatkan mereka seperti apa yang Dia telah isytiharkan (ayat 7) walaupun “orang jahat masih berkeliaran di setiap sudut” (ayat 8a). Orang jahat adalah mereka yang dipenuhi kepalsuan; mereka “meninggikan keganasan di kalangan umat manusia” (ayat 8b).

Pesan Umat Allah adalah mereka yang Dia sudah meterai dengan satu perjanjian.

Mereka bertemu dengan ramai musuh. Di antara mereka adalah golongan yang mahu menawan hati mereka menerusi kata-kata manis selain mereka yang tidak segan-silu menguasai orang lain.

Mazmur 12 menunjukkan cita-cita mereka dengan jelas menerusi soalan mereka yang bersifat retorik, “Siapakah Tuhan kami?” Mereka menggunakan cara yang palsu untuk mencapai matlamat mereka dalam hidup dan dalam masyarakat: untuk mengambil alih daripada YHWH. Namun, YHWH, dan Dia sahaja, adalah Tuhan yang sebenar. Dia bercakap benar dan menyelamatkan UmatNya daripada musuh mereka menerusi kebenaran. Inilah perjanjian yang dibayangkan oleh Mazmur 12, kebenaran itu pertama sekali ialah YHWH mendengar seruan dan ratapan umat sewaktu perhambaan mereka di Mesir dan oleh yang demikian Dia datang untuk menyelamatkan mereka.

Selepas itu, Dia memeterai satu perjanjian dengan mereka di mana Dia menjadikan mereka bangsaNya dan Dia menjadi Allah mereka. Dalam kasihNya yang teguh bagi mereka, Dia setia kepada mereka tanpa mengecewakan. Maka itu, bangsaNya dapat melawan serangan musuh mereka hanya dengan sentiasa teguh dan setia kepadaNya sebagai Tuhan dan Allah mereka yang sebenar dan satu-satunya. Perjanjian mereka denganNya akan kekal utuh.

Makna Kristian Konflik di antara kepalsuan dengan kebenaran mengingatkan kita kepada katakaya Yesus dalam Injil Yohanes 8:44-45. Kepada mereka yang mahu berkonfrontasi denganNya, Yesus memberi khutbah yang panjang. Sebahagian daripadanya menegaskan, “Kamu datang dari bapa kamu, iaitu syaitan, dan kamu memilih untuk melaksanakan keinginan bapa kamu. Dia adalah seorang pembunuh dari mula lagi dan tidak berdiri dalam kebenaran, kerana kebenaran tidak ada di dalamnya. Apabila dia berbohong, dia bercakap menurut sifatnya, kerana dia adalah seorang pendusta dan bapa pembohongan. Tetapi oleh kerana saya bercakap benar, kamu tidak percaya kepadaKu.” Syaitan telah memenangi musuh Yesus untuk dirinya menerusi kepalsuan supaya mereka menentang Yesus kerana Dia bercakap benar.

Bapa pembohongan berusaha sedaya upaya untuk memusnahkan Yesus, iaitu “jalan, kebenaran dan kehidupan” (Injil Yohanes 14:6). Dia menyimpannya ke dalam hati Yudas, seorang anggota lingkaran murid dalamanNya, untuk mengkhianatiNya (Injil Yohanes 13:27). Pengkhianatan Yudas terhadap Tuannya mencetuskan permulaan bagi ‘kejayaan’ komplot syaitan. Buat seketika, musuh Yesus nampak ‘berjaya’. Mereka menangkap dan membicaraNya. Malah mereka membawaNya kepada Pilatus, wakil tempatan Maharaja Romawi dan penguasa sivil tertinggi, untuk menyokong tuntutan mereka agar Dia disalibkan.

Sebagai jawapan kepada pertanyaan Pilatus, Yesus berfirman, “Aku dilahirkan untuk ini, dan Aku datang ke dalam dunia untuk ini, untuk bersaksi kepada kebenaran.

Semua orang yang berpihak kepada kebenaran mendengar suaraKu”. (Injil Yohanes 18:37-38)

Pilatus menawarkan pilihan kepada musuh Yesus untuk membebaskanNya ataupun Barabbas.

Pemilihan Barabbas oleh orang ramai yang menolak Yesus bermakna mereka memilih kepalsuan.

Pilatus, yang tidak menjumpai sebarang kes terhadapNya, menawarkan pilihan kepada musuh Yesus untuk membebaskanNya ataupun Barabbas, seorang penjenayah tegar. Pemilihan Barabbas oleh orang ramai yang menolak Yesus bermakna mereka memilih kepalsuan.

Yesus yang merupakan kebenaran seterusnya disalibkan oleh ejen-ejen bapa pembohongan. Kepalsuan menang, tetapi hanya seketika sahaja. Pada akhirnya, kebenaran mesti menang. Itulah apa yang berlaku apabila Yesus, iaitu kebenaran, bangkit dengan kemenangan dari kematian. KebangkitanNya merupakan kesaksian kepada campur tangan BapaNya yang setia sepenuhnya kepada janji penyelamatanNya kepada bangsaNya. Kebangkitan Yesus ternyata jawapan Bapa kepada seruan bangsaNya dalam Mazmur 2: “Selamatkanlah, YHWH!” Ia adalah jelas satu jawapan Kristian. Menerusi kebangkitanNya, Kristus, yang merupakan kebenaran, menyelamatkan umat beriman daripada kemusnahan syaitan, bapa pembohongan. (Terjemahan)

Puji bonda dengan bunga

Aku telah belajar dalam sebarang dan semua keadaan, rahsia bagi menghadapi setiap situasi, sama ada kenyang atau kelaparan, memiliki kecukupan dan cukup untuk disimpan atau hidup tanpa dan memerlukan sesuatu, aku ada kekuatan bagi semua perkara dalam Kristus Yang memperkasakan aku. (Filipi 4:12-13)

Tahukah anda bahawa Hari Raya Orang Kudus pada mulanya adalah satu peringatan bagi “semua martir”?

Hari raya 1 November sekarang memberi penghormatan kepada santo-santa yang ramai daripada kita kenali.

Memandangkan Misa Vigil jatuh pada hari terakhir bulan Rosari yang diabadikan kepada Bonda Maria, ia juga masa yang sesuai untuk menutupnya dengan menyanyikan lagu-lagu pujian, membawa bunga dan menyalakan lilin kepada bonda. Ia juga adalah masa untuk merenungkan perhubungan kita dengan bonda kita, kerana kita diberitahu, di mana Maria berada, di situ jugalah Anak bonda, Yesus.

Dalam isu kita pada bulan ini, kami membawa kepada anda satu rekoleksi mengenai ‘Discernment of Spirits’ (Mengenali Roh-Roh) oleh Fr James Tan SJ dari Singapura;

Paus lantik uskup agung US untuk ketuai akademi diplomat Vatikan KOTA VATIKAN — Pope Francis melantik seorang uskup agung dari Amerika Syarikat yang berkhidmat sebagai seorang nunsio (duta) untuk mengetuai akademi diplomatik Vatikan.

Vatikan mengumumkan pada 11 Oktober lalu bahawa Uskup Agung Joseph S. Marino, seorang anak jati Birmingham, Alabama, yang berusia 66 tahun, telah dilantik untuk menjadi presiden Akademi Eklesiastikal Pontifikal.

Beliau merupakan prelat gereja kedua dari AS yang mengetuai sekolah yang berpangkalan di Rom itu, yang ditubuhkan lebih 300 tahun lalu; Kardinal AS Justin Rigali menjadi presiden akademi itu dari 1985 hingga 1989.

Pada awal 2013, Pope Benedict XVI telah melantik Marino untuk menjadi nunsio pertama Vatikan ke Malaysia: Vatikan dan Malaysia mengumumkan penubuhan hubungan diplomatik sepenuhnya pada 2011.

Jawatan itu turut merangkumi perkhidmatan sebagai nunsio kepada Timor Leste dan wakil delegasi apostolik di Brunei.

Sebelum itu, uskup agung AS itu menjadi nunsio ke Bangladesh sejak 2008.

Dilahirkan pada 1953, beliu lulus dari Sekolah Tinggi John Carrolle di Birmingham pada 1871 dan memperolehi ijazah dari Universiti Scranton di Pennsylvania dan Universiti Gregorian Pontifikal di Rom. Sebagai seorang seminarian di Kolej Amerika Utara Pontifikal di Rom, beliau menghabiskan musim panas pada 1976 sebagai sukarelawan untuk St Teresa Kolkata dan perkumpulan beliau, MisionariMisionari Kasih, dengan menjaga pesakit kanser lelaki dan membantu biarawatibiarawati tersebut dalam kerja mereka di kampung-kampung miskin.

Niat doa Pope Francis untuk bulan November Dialog dan Perdamaian di Timur Dekat Agar semangat dialog, pertemuan dan perdamaian muncul di Timur Dekat, di mana pelbagai komuniti beragama sama-sama berkongsi kehidupan mereka.

satu seminar ‘Social Communications’ (Komunikasi Sosial) yang dikendalikan oleh Ignatius Krishnan dari Keuskupan Agung Kuala Lumpur, selain projek komuniti yang dijalankan oleh paroki kita.

Kita boleh mengalu-alukan dalam masa terdekat sebuah bangunan baharu Gereja St Peter dengan senibina gothik yang menarik, selepas Uskup Agung Simon Poh memberkati acara pecah tanah baru-baru ini di tapak pembinaan di Padungan.

Bagi kita yang masih ada keraguan, marilah kita berdoa bagi rahmat untuk menerima Kristus sebagai kecukupan kita, dan menyeru kepada Bonda Kita untuk berdoa bagi kita, dan mungkin memuji bonda dengan sekuntum bunga?

Retreat Tahunan: Paderi digesa keluar dari zon selamat mereka

Gambar kenangan para paderi dan uskup dari Sarawak dan Brunei selepas retreat mereka KUCHING — Seramai 84 orang paderi dari seluruh Sarawak dan Brunei menghadiri Retreat Tahunan selama lima hari di Kolej Seminari St Peter, Kuching, dari 16-20 September lalu.

Retreat itu disampaikan oleh Father Antonio Pernia SVD, bekas ketua utama Persatuan Firman Ilahi atau ‘Society of the Divine Word’ (SVD). SVD merupakan kongregasi terbesar dalam Gereja Katolik yang diabadikan kepada kerja misi.

Retreat itu memberi tumpuan

kepada misi dan membolehkan para paderi untuk merenungkan visi dan misi paus, cabarannya dan pendekatan baharu dalam usaha menyebar Berita Baik.

Fr Antonio menggesa paderi untuk sentiasa bersedia keluar dari zon selesa mereka, dan terutamanya mengalu-alukan orang asing dan orang miskin di tengah-tengah mereka.

Selain itu, dalam masyarakat pelbagai budaya, keperluan itu sentias ada untuk menjadi lebih inklusif dan menghargai kepelbagaan budaya di dalam

Gereja.

Ia sesungguhnya retreat yang sesuai dan membuahkan hasil menjelang penutupan Tahun Misionari Luar Biasa pada Oktober.

Turut hadir adalah Uskup Agung Kuching Simon Poh, Uskup Sibu Joseph Hii, Uskup Miri Richard Ng, Uskup Brunei Cornelius Sim serta Uskup Agung Emeritus Peter Chung dan Uskup Agung Emeritus John Ha dari Kuching.

Paroki St Jude rai Hari Santo Penaung

BUNAN-TEBEDU — “Keajaiban terbesar oleh St Jude yang pernah saya lihat adalah paroki ini,” kata Uskup Agung Kuching Simon Poh semasa perayaan Ekaristi sempena Hari Santo Penaung Paroki St Jude di sini pada petang Sabtu 26 Oktober lepas.

“Bayangkan jika Gereja tidak wujud di sini; sekolah, klinik, koperasi juga tidak ada. Apakah yang akan terjadi kepada kampung sempadan ini?” katanya.

Beliau berkata St Jude merupakan santo penaung bagi kes-kes yang tidak ada harapan, dan pada hari ini, pembangunan Paroki St Jude dikaitkan dengan santo penaung itu.

Uskup Agung itu kemudian menggalakkan jemaat paroki St Jude yang bekerja di kota raya atau bandar untuk kembali ke kampung halaman mereka dan menyumbang kepada pembangunan paroki.

UNTUK PENYENGGARAAN DAN PENGEMBANGAN …

Paroki St Jude Bunan-Tebedu telah menganjurkan jualan paroki pada 26 Oktober lalu untuk mengumpul dana bagi menaik taraf kemudahan di Pusat Ziarah Gethsemane, Jalan Mongkos, yang berada di bawah jagaan Paroki St Jude Bunan-Tebedu. Pengunjung dari Kuching turut datang untuk menyokong jualan. Jualan bermula jam 8.00 pagi dengan doa pembukaan oleh Rektor Paroki St Jude, Father Berchmans Rayar CMF. Sebanyak 15 buah gerai menjual nasi kampung, ikan keli dan daging babi panggang, hasil hutan dan barang makanan lain. Cuaca baik turut menyumbang kepada sokongan orang ramai yang begitu baik kepada jualan itu. Jawatankuasa penganjur mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua yang menyokong jualan tersebut.

Senibina gereja Gothik untuk bangunan Gereja St Peter baharu di Padungan

KUCHING — Bangunan baharu Gereja St Peter yang akan dibina tidak lama lagi di Padungan dijangka akan menjadi mercu tanda yang menonjol dalam landskap Kuching apabila ia siap dalam tempoh empat tahun akan datang.

Uskup Agung Kuching Simon Poh merasmikan acara pecah tanah dan pemberkatan tapak bangunan gereja baharu bersama Rektor Gereja St Peter Father Vincent Chin pada Ahad 20 Oktober lalu.

Perjanjian kontrak turut ditandatangani pada hari yang sama dan disaksikan oleh kira-kira 100 jemaat paroki termasuk ahli majlis paroki, kontraktor dan arkitek.

Uskup Agung Simon merenjis air suci di tapak pembinaan untuk memberkati tanah berkenaan dan berdoa agar Tuhan melindungi semua yang akan bekerja di tapak itu daripada segala musibah.

Fr Vincent, yang memiliki latar belakang senibina, berkata reka bentuk bangunan gereja baharu diilhamkan oleh idea dan konsep di gerejagereja yang beliau pernah

Bangunan gereja sedia ada dibina pada 1949 dan dapat menampung hanya 800 anggota paroki. Mengambil kira populasi Katolik yang semakin ramai pergi ke gereja terutamanya pada hari-hari perayaan

gereja, ini telah memerlukan pembinaan bangunan gereja yang lebih besar. Selain itu, asas bagi gereja yang sedia ada sudah mula menunjukkan tanda kerekahan.

Reka bentuk gereja baharu adalah berdasarkan senibina gereja Gothik dengan kaca berwarna sebagai ciri utama.

Ia dijangka memiliki menara tajam, gerbang ‘ogival’, tingkap mawar, jubin lantai istimewa dan sebuah menara loceng.

Ia memiliki kapasiti untuk menempatkan lebih 1,000 jemaat dalam satu masa.

AKAN DATANG … Uskup Agung Kuching Simon Poh memberkati tapak di Pusat Ziarah Gethsemane pada Ahad 27 Oktober lalu untuk melancarkan pembinaan sebuah hostel, dapur dan beberapa bilik individu. Kompleks ini, yang dapat menampung 300 orang, dijadual siap sebelum Februari 2020 dengan anggaran kos RM400,000. Sebahagian daripada projek ini akan dibuat secara gotong-royong oleh jemaat Paroki St Jude, Bunan-Tebedu. Kongres Kerahiman Ilahi Nasional III Indonesia PONTIANAK, Indonesia — Kongres Nasional (KONGNAS) III Komuniti Kerasulan Kerahiman Ilahi di Indonesia telah dihadiri seramai 670 orang peserta, termasuk uskup, paderi, religius dan peserta pelayanan Kerahiman Ilahi dari setiap daerah dan juga luar negara.

KONGNAS III ini, yang diketuai Monsignor Anicetus Sinaga OFM, iaitu Uskup Agung Emeritus Keuskupan Agung Medan, berlangsung pada 11-13 Oktober lalu di dewan Hotel Kapuas Palace, Pontianak.

Pembukaan KONGNAS III telah diadakan di Katedral Santo Yosef Pontianak yang diketuai Keuskupan Agung Pontinak iaitu Msgr Agustinus Agus dan dirasmikan oleh Wakil Gabenor Kalimantan,

Delegasi dari Keuskupan Agung Kuching Indonesia.

Kebaktian Kerahiman Ilahi ini sudah membangun di

Gereja St Michael di Kaong Ulu sudah wujud selama 11 tahun

SIMANGGANG — Pada 29 September yang lalu, Gereja St Michael di Kaong Ulu telah meraikan ulang tahun yang ke-11.

Misa Kudus yang bermula pada 10.30 pagi dirayakan oleh Father Robert Jissem.

Katekis Christopher Chendan yang mewakili jemaat Katolik di Kaong Ulu mengucap syukur kepada Tuhan dan berterima kasih kepada semua pihak yang telah membantu untuk mendirikan Gereja St Michael di kawasan Lubuk Antu.

Setakat ini, terdapat 24 buah keluarga Katolik di

rumah panjang Kaong Ulu yang terdiri daripada kira-kira 200 orang jemaat.

Dalam ucapan ringkasnya, Fr Robert menyeru kepada semua jemaat supaya berpegang teguh kepada iman mereka, rajin bersembahyang dan sentiasa bekerjasama untuk memajukan gereja.

Acara memotong kek telah disempurnakan oleh ahli-ahli jawatankuasa gereja, diikuti jamuan makan tengah hari secara ‘potluck’. Sambutan yang sederhana tetapi meriah ini berakhir sekitar jam 1.00 petang.

Senibina gereja Gothik untuk bangunan Gereja St Peter baharu

Selain gereja baharu, Pelan Pembangunan Induk yang diluluskan oleh Lembaga Perancangan Negeri termasuk sebuah dewan serbaguna yang bersambung dengan blok pejabaty, sebuah hostel lapan tingkat untuk sekolah antarabangsa, sebuah pusat pembentukan empat tingkat, sebuah kolumbarium dua tingkat dan tempat letak kereta

yang mencukupi, dengan ruang yang luas di seluruh kawasan.

Bangunan gereja baharu itu akan memakan kos melebihi RM37 juta dan tender sudah dianugerahkan kepada Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd. Pembiayaan gereja baharu datang daripada anggota paroki yang murah hati dan penyokong yang berniat baik. - Majlis Paroki St Peter (Terjemahan)

setiap negara pada peringkat paroki mahupun pada peringkat keuskupan. Kuching dan Sabah

diwakili 50 orang peserta yang diketuai Uskup Agung Simon Poh dari Kuching. Beliau mahu

peserta menimba pengalaman agar dapat diterapkan di paroki masing-masing dalam Keuskupan Agung.

Tema bagi Kongres ini ialah ‘Engkaulah Bunga Kasih, dan Buah Kerahimanku’ (BHF 948) dan dikendalikan oleh lima orang penceramah.

Dalam sesi ini, peserta telah mempelajari tentang Kerahiman Ilahi dan juga Cara Kebaktian Kerahiman Ilahi.

Ceramah yang disampaikan juga ditutup dengan sesi soal jawab bersama penceramah yang disoal tentang kebaktian itu. Sesi ini diakhiri dengan perkongsian kesaksian oleh Puan Cynthia.

KONGNAS IV pada tahun 2022 akan diadakan di Makasar, Sulawesi.

Paus lantik uskup agung US untuk ketuai akademi diplomat Vatikan

• Bersambung dari ms 25 Pada 2017, beliau memberitahu star2.com, sebuah saluran dalam talian di Malaysia, bahawa pengalaman itu “membantu membentuk empati saya terhadap golongan yang memerlukan bantuan, terutamanya prejudis sosial, kesepian dan penolakan.

Golongan yang paling miskin di kalangan orang miskin sewajarnya menikmati kasih sayang dan penjagaan dan kita harus mendekati dan membantu mereka menjalani kehidupan yang lebih baik”.

Beliau berkata pengalaman beliau di Kolkata “mengajar saya tentang semangat keterbukaan dan belaskasihan”.

Selepas pentahbisan kepada kepaderian pada 1979, beliau kerkhidmatan sebagai seorang

paderi bersekutu di Katedral St Paul, Birmingham, dari 1980 hingga 1984, sebelum beliau memasuki akademi untuk diplomat di Rom. Beliau bertindak sebagai seorang diplomat yang berpangkalan di nunsiatur di London dan bekerja di Sekretariat Negara Vatikan dari 1997 hingga 2004.

Beliau menjadi anggota delegasi Vatikan yang diutus oleh St John Paul II ke Belgrade pada 1999 sewaktu konflik Kosovo dalam satu usaha damai, dan beliau merupakan sebahagian daripada delegasi kepausan yang diutus pada 2003 untuk berjumpa dengan Presiden AS George W. Bush bagi menyampaikan rayuan paus bagi keamanan sebelum peperangan bermula di Iraq.

Marino menggantikan Uskup Agung Itali Giampiero Gloder, 61, yang akan menjadi nunsio kepausan ke Cuba, selepas beliau mengetuai akademi berkenaan sejak 2013.

Akademi tersebut melatih paderi - yang dipilih dari seluruh dunia oleh Sekretariat Negara - untuk menjadi diplomat Vatikan dan pendoa yang akan berbakti kepada paus dan Gereja. Cahaya baik dalam dunia suram: Paus isytihar lima orang kudus baharu

KOTA VATIKAN — Santosanta merupakan orang yang menyedari keperluan mereka bagi bantuan Tuhan, yang mengambil risiko untuk mencari kehendak Tuhan dan membantu orang lain, dan yang memupuk tabiat bersyukur, kata Pope Francis.

“Kemuncak bagi perjalanan iman adalah untuk menjalani kehidupan yang sentiasa bersyukur. Marilah kita tanya diri sendiri: Adakah kita, sebagai orang beriman, menjalani setiap hari umpama satu bebanan, atau umpama satu pujian?” kata paus itu dalam homili beliau pada 13 Oktober lalu selepas secara rasmi mengisytiharkan lima santo dan santa baharu untuk

Gereja Katolik.

Mereka yang dikanonisasi atau diangkat sebagai orang kudus dalam Misa berkenaan adalah: St John Henry Newman, iaitu ahli teologi, penyajak dan kardinal dari Britain yang meninggal dunia pada 1890; St Maria Rita Lopes Pontes, lebih dikenali sebagai Sister Dulce, dari Brazil, yang meninggal dunia pada 1992; St Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan dari India, pengasas Kongregasi Keluarga Kudus, yang meninggal dunia pada 1926; St Marguerite Bays, seorang mistik dan wanita awam berbangsa Swiss, yang meninggal dunia pada 1879; dan St Josephine Vannini, pengasas bersama

perkumpulan Anak-Anak Perempuan St Camillus, yang berbangsa Itali dan meninggal dunia pada 1911.

“Tiga daripada mereka adalah wanita-wanita religius,” kata paus dalam homili beliau.

“Mereka menunjukkan kepada kita bahawa kehidupan yang dikonsekrasi adalah satu perjalanan kasih di pinggir eksistensia dunia.”

“Sebaliknya St Marguerite Bays merupakan seorang tukang jahit; beliau bercakap kepada kita tentang kuasa doa mudah, kesabaran yang bertahan lama dan pemberian diri yang senyap,” katanya.

Umat perlu tahu sedar tentang dosa ekologi

VATIKAN — Para anggota Sinode meminta Gereja Katolik untuk memperdalam teologinya agar dapat membantu orang mengenali “dosa-dosa ekologi”.

Pada sesi petang 8 Oktober, para ahli mengatakan bahawa “pertobatan ekologi” diperlukan untuk memastikan orang Kristian memahami “keberatan dosa terhadap alam sekitar sebagai dosa terhadap Tuhan, terhadap orang di sekeliling kita dan dosa terhadap generasi masa depan.” “‘Tidak’ kepada individualisme atau sikap acuh tak acuh yang membuatkan kita hanya sebagai penonton.

‘Ya’ untuk pertobatan ekologi yang berpusat pada tanggungjawab dan ekologi integral yang menempatkan martabat di mana ia selalu tidak dipedulikan oleh dunia masa kini.”

Pada taklimat akhbar Vatikan pada 9 Oktober,

Paolo Ruffini, ketua Dikasteri untuk Komunikasi, melaporkan bahawa salah seorang ahli sinode menegaskan bahawa sebagai penganut Kristian, “seseorang itu dipanggil untuk peduli ekologi atau moral ekologi bahawa wujudnya dosa akibat tidak menghormati ekologi.

Perbuatan tidak menghormati ekologi ini juga digambarkan sebagai ‘ecocide’.”

Ahli sinode itu juga mengatakan melalui katekesis khususnya dalam sakramen taubat, realiti dan impak dosa ekologi dapat dijelaskan. Seperti dosa-dosa lain, dosa ekologi “boleh dianggap sama ada kecil atau besar tetapi dalam keduaduanya, ia menentang Tuhan dan menyakiti orang sekelilingnya.”

Pertobatan ekologi memerlukan, pertama dan paling utama, “pertobatan untuk kekudusan”.

Ahli-ahli Sinode menyeru gereja, terutamanya media, untuk menyoroti kehidupan “imam yang baik”. — CNS

Sri Paus utus ucapan terima kasih kepada Sultan Johor

JOHOR BAHRU — Sri Paus Fransiskus telah menulis surat penghargaan kepada Sultan Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar kerana menghapuskan hukuman mati terhadap tiga orang adikberadik rakyat Mexico yang disabitkan dengan jenayah menyeludup dadah.

Ditandatangani oleh Setiausaha Negara Vatikan, Kardinal Pietro Parolin, surat itu diserahkan sendiri kepada Sultan Ibrahim di Istana Pasir Pelangi pada 7 Oketober oleh Duta Vatikan ke Malaysia, Uskup Agung Joseph Salvador Marino.

Dalam surat itu, Sri Paus mengucapkan terima kasih kepada sultan di atas belas kasihan dan pengampunan baginda terhadap tiga orang Mexico tersebut.

Tiga orang adik-beradik Mexico, Simon, Luis Alfonso dan Jose Regina Gonzales Villarreal ditangkap semasa

serbuan di sebuah makmal memproses methamphetamine di Johor Bahru pada Mac 2008.

Tiga orang beradik yang berasal dari Sinaloa, Mexico, dijatuhkan hukuman gantung sampai mati pada tahun 2012, telah mengemukakan rayuan tidak bersalah, bahawa mereka telah diupah untuk membersihkan bangunan di mana dadah itu ditemui.

Sabitan kesalahan mereka ditangguhkan pada tahun berikutnya.

Adik-beradik itu mengatakan mereka telah diupah untuk

membersihkan bangunan serta tidak mengetahui ada dadah di dalam bangunan itu. Sri Paus “berdoa agar tindakan belas kasihan ini akan menjadi semangat bagi semua orang untuk memperbaharui komitment membina dunia yang saling memaafkan, memilih damai dan dalam semangat solidariti persaudaraan.”

Bapa Suci turut mendoakan agar baginda dan seluruh kerabat diraja Johor akan dirahmati sukacita.

Peranan St Newman dalam usaha mengasas Pergerakan Oxford dalam Gereja England, satu usaha untuk menemui semula penulis Kristian awal dan memulihkan asal-usul Katolik dalam fahaman Anglikan, “mempunyai pengaruh asas

manfaat dan penting ke atas fahaman Anglikan”, kata Uskup Agung Welby.

Seperti kelaziman beliau di sembahyang Misa, termasuk di kanonisasi, Pope Francis menggunakan homili beliau untuk merenungkan bacaan Kitab pada hari itu dan hanya membuat rujukan sepintas lalu kepada orang yang diisytiharkan sebagai santo dan santa.

Bacaan Injil yang singkat pada hari itu dari Injil Lukas menceritakan kisah 10 pesakit kusta yang, apabila Yesus menghampiri mereka, menyeru kepadaNya untuk penyembuhan. Dia menyuruh mereka untuk menunjukkan diri kepada pendeta dan, dalam perjalanan mereka, mereka disembuhkan. Namun hanya seorang sahaja yang kembali untuk mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Yesus.

“Seperti pesakit kusta tersebut,” kata Pope Francis, “kita juga memerlukan penyembuhan, setiap daripada kita. Kita perlu disembuhkan daripada rasa tidak yakin kepada diri kita sendiri, kepada kehidupan, kepada masa depan; kita perlu disembuhkan daripada ketakutan kita dan keburukan yang memperhambakan kita, daripada sikap kita yang tidak ramah, ketagihan kita dan kesukaan kita dengan permainan, wang, televisyen, telefon bimbit, dengan apa yang orang lain fikirkan.”

Di antara mereka adalah Putera Charles dari Britain, Presiden Itali Sergio Mattarella, Naib Presiden Brazil Hamilton Martins Mourao, seorang ahli majlis persekutuan Switzerland, dan timbalan menteri luar India.
