Oats Fibre: Why are they
good for health? Your heart is your lifeline. The formula to keep it fit and healthy is to eat healthy and exercise regularly. While the solution to a healthy heart seems simple, the path can be challenging. Packed work hours leave us with no time to spare for exercise. While some of us are never motivated to switch to a healthy diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals and pulses, others just ‘don’t find time’ to fix a healthy meal. The temptation of high fat, high salt and high sugar food and beverages is another big hurdle we often fail to cross. The consequence of this negligence is a possible increase in bad cholesterol in the blood; the biggest enemy of the heart. Read on for a simple way to help take care of your heart…
Fibre: The True Superhero Fibre is a true superhero; as it helps to keep the digestive system healthy. Additionally, when soluble fibre like beta-glucan (found in oats) becomes part of a healthy diet and exercise regimen, it helps fight bad cholesterol, which is considered to support heart health. Across the globe, health agencies also have recognized the benefits of fibre, especially soluble fibre like oats beta-glucan.1,2 Cholesterol is produced in the body and also comes from the food that we eat. Some of this cholesterol is used by the body to make a substance called bile acids, which is important for digestion. However, excess cholesterol can be dangerous and may block arteries and result in heart attacks. Studies have shown that dietary fibres, especially oats fibre can help lower blood cholesterol levels by facilitating their removal from the body.2,3
Food Safety and Health Bodies that recognize the effect of 3 g/day of oats beta-glucan to reduce blood cholesterol:1,2,4 US Food and Drug Administration European Food Safety Authority French Food Safety Agency Joint Health Claims Initiative in the United Kingdom Ministry of Health, Malaysia
How does Oats Fibre help reduce cholesterol in the body? Beta-glucan is the soluble fibre found in oats. It forms a highly viscous solution in the intestine and traps some of the cholesterol containing bile acids and excretes them through the stools.3 Daily consumption of adequate quantities of beta-glucan would help ensure that this cycle takes place over and over again, leading to removal of excess cholesterol from the circulation and maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels in the body.3
Health Facts !! About 35% of Malaysian adults have high cholesterol levels.5 High cholesterol is one of the major factors that lead to the development of heart disease. It has been estimated that Malaysians probably consume only 13–16 g of total fibre per day,6 which is much lower than the recommendations of the Malaysian Recommended Nutrient Intake of 20–30 g per day.7
Sip-up the Fibre To ensure that our diet contains adequate fibre, we could start by including foods like kangkong, lady’s finger, apples, red beans, oats etc. into our daily meals. Fibre-containing beverages are also now available and is a quick and convenient way to ensure adequate fibre in the diet. For example, if you consume beverages that provide 6 g of fibre per serve, you are actually meeting 20% of your daily fibre requirement (Recommended Nutrient Intake Malaysia7) in just one shot. Look out for beverages that contain Oats Fibre. They have good amounts of beta-glucan which are known to support heart health; and what’s more, they taste good too!!!
Make sure to include Oats Fibre in your diet!!!

HEALTH & FITNESS
BODY FIRST
These handy tips will help your body go the distance so that your busy lifestyle doesn’t end up causing you unnecessary aches and pains.
1
IF THE SHOE FITS To avoid pain tomorrow, choose your shoes carefully today. For exercise, its good idea to be professionally fitted with footwear designed to adequately support your feet.
2
WATER WORKS As well as keeping you hydrated (which can help to prevent headaches), water keeps the digestive system in good order and flushes out the waste products.
3
EAT GOOD FATS Fish oils are rich in beneficial oils known as omega -3 fatty acids, found in fish including tuna, salmon, mackerel and sardines. Fish oils are often taken by people with arthritis.
4
STRETCH IT OUT Stretching exercises relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation. To de-stress at work, do some simple stretches at your desk during breaks.

Recheck Your look
First impressions happen only once, so you should take the time to find outfits that speak to who you are. This is why it’s so important to regularly reassess your look. You need to adjust your look every five years at least to better reflect your station in life. Those mini-jean skirts you wore in your twenties probably won’t help you convey the look you want to after age thirty. Update your clothes and overall look so that your style fits your life-stage.
2
Label your style
3
De-Clutter Your Wardrobe
Knowing what your ‘look’ is makes shopping easier so you won’t have a schizophrenic wardrobe where nothing really goes together. To label your own style, ask yourself: How much time do I have to get ready in the morning? How do I spend my day? Who are the style icons I most admire?
To clear an overcrowded closet, determine which items you’re wearing for the wrong reasons
34 ● TODAY’S CHOICES | SEPTEMBER 2012

and donate them to charity. It might be those pants you’re hanging on to because they were expensive, but that just don’t fit right. Or the sweater your mother-in-law gave you that’s the wrong color for your skin tone. Or a blouse that better reflects your twenty-something rather than thirty-something style.
4
Determine your go-to colors
Wearing the right hues for your individual skin tone can make you look more awake and approachable. Incorporate those colors into your wardrobe so that you feel great and make a bigger impact on others.. To determine which ones work best on you, hold fabrics of different shades to your face. Note which colors make your eyes pop and skin glow — and which make you look pale or tired. A brown-eyed, dark hair woman with olive undertones may look best in earth tones such as gold, autumn red, and olive green.

THINK PINK!
We’re always on the lookout for enlightening wardrobe ideas, which usually involves pouring through fashion trends or endlessly scanning street style blogs but in supporting breast cancer awareness this coming October, we’ve compile Styling Tips on how to be trendy in pink. So, read on and let us freshened up your outfit and help us promote breast cancer awareness.
#1 keep it casual Jeans with bright colors are becoming a trend in 2012. But there is one color that is so favored by lovers of fashion, especially celebrities, and the color is pink! Too scared to wear bright pink? try wearing a lighter pink (dusty pink) and a neutral colour top.
#2 Balance bright accessories with neutral frock One of this season’s key trends is vibrant, look-at-me color. With that in mind, we’re more than happy to bring you yet another example of how to execute this look, simply consider Jessica Alba as your guide. The actress spotted looked radiant in a fuchsia scarf with equally vibrant flat. She smartly kept the rest of her attire casual. Whichever vivid color you choose to wear, pick accents in muted colors to balance your overall look.
SPECIAL
#3 Print on Print One of the hottest things we’re seeing right now on runways and magazine covers is the print-onprint trend—a fusion of florals, polka dots, stripes, and animal skins that delivers a clashing, eyecatching statement. Unfortunately it’s a task that’s not always easy to do, but take a cue from Miranda Kerr, her attention to color and texture were factors into a successful print-on-print outfit.
#4 Head to toe Pink Monochromatic dressing is undoubtedly chic, but putting together a successful single-hued ensemble can be tricky. Try playing with colour gradients, a darker shade of pink when wearing a pink blazer or lighter shade as a skirt when you pair it with a hot pink top.
#5 Go Peplum! We are crazy over peplum silhouette, whether it’s a dress, skirt, or top, we just love them all. While shorts might be too casual for some dressier events, Saldana’s ensemble worked well because of its chic silk fabric and the way she styled them with a dramatic ruffled blouse and pairing them with a simple black ankle strap pumps. Verdict; a very elegant look, on-trend, and definitely worth emulating.
about peppiave Peppermint Avenue or Peppiave is an emerging e-clothing store who was cofounded by 3 irda sisters, Irda Suriana, Irda Nurhidayah and Irda Nuralia. Their Signature look is upbeat, playful and arty; Peppiave appeals to women of all ages and shapes who wants elegant, quality, wearable daytime or night look. Their aim is to bring LA fashion to your doorstep.
