Belek’s fourteen magnificent golf courses have set a new benchmark for quality golf in Europe.
B
elek’s continuing evolution into an established golf destination is set to continue later this year when it becomes the focal point for the world’s golf tourism industry. The resort, set on the southernmost coast of Turkey, did not gain its first golf course until late 1994 – only just over 16 years ago. Yet in that time it has seen an explosion of golf development, to the point where golfers visiting the resort now have a choice of an incredible 17 courses, all within a few minutes of each other. The resort has already been named Europe’s Golf Destination of the Year in 2008, in the prestigious annual IAGTO
Awards which honour the best in golf. It underlined that success by having four of its courses named in Golf World’s Top 100 European Courses in 2009. And this coming November will see Belek welcoming tour operators, journalists and golf industry executives from around the globe when it hosts the annual International Golf Travel Market gathering. That will give it an unprecedented opportunity to showcase its golf product. Belek’s golf expansion has been nothing short of meteoric in recent years. It now boasts 279 holes of golf at 11 clubs, with over half of the new facilities opening within the last five years. Yet the accolades highlight that growth has not been at the

expense of quality. The pace has slowed down, but there is a further course under development, and it is a very special one. Due to open in 2013, Belek Golf Club is a partnership with the European Tour and its Castle course has been designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, Europe’s Ryder Cup captain for 2012. The project will be part of a world-class residential and resort community which will have homes owned by the likes of England football stars Michael Owen and David Platt and will also feature a navigable 7km canal system connecting lakes and streams on the golf course, a town centre with shops, dining and entertainment venues, a wellness clinic and a luxury hotel. The course will be operated by world-leading
management company Troon Golf. It will help enhance a reputation which has steadily grown since its first course, the National Golf Club layout designed by David Feherty and David Jones, opened in 1994. All of Belek’s four Top 100 courses in the Golf World rankings are under 10 years old. They were: Antalya Golf Club’s David Jones-designed PGA Sultan course, ranked at number 60; Perry Dye’s new LykiaLinks layout, at 63; the Cornelia Golf Club’s Prince course, by Sir Nick Faldo, at 72; and, at 93, the Carya heathland course by Peter Thomson, Ross Perrett and Tim Lobb which
opened at the end of 2008. The recent course-building boom was kicked off by the 27-hole Cornelia Golf Club, which opened its first 18 holes in late 2006. It was followed by PGA Design Consulting’s 18-hole Sueno Golf Club and the 18-hole Kaya Eagles Golf Club by Irish designer David Jones, who co-designed Belek’s first course, the National, as well as the toprated Sultan track at Antalya Golf Club. Besides Carya, two other courses opened in late 2008: the Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Club (renamed from the Papillon Golf Club), featuring a design by 2010 Europe Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie; and the acclaimed LykiaLinks layout by Perry Dye, the first links course in the Eastern Mediterranean. Set in an area which forms part of the “Turkish Riviera” and less than 20 miles from the main regional gateway of Antalya, the purpose-built resort of Belek has quickly made a name for itself as a popular holiday destination as well as a golfing hotspot, thanks to its profusion of four and five-star hotels. Many have extensive spa facilities and other leisure activities such as water sports and tennis. Belek’s excellent climate is a major attraction for holidaymakers, as are its beautiful sandy beaches. With shopping on its doorstep, the nightlife of Antalya just half an hour away and numerous natural and historic attractions within easy reach, there is plenty to keep golfers and their families occupied beyond Belek, too. pened in 2002 and constructed by European Golf Design alongside Irishman David Jones, a consultant designer, the Pasha course is immaculately manicured with four par-fives, undulating Bermuda greens and plenty of eucalyptus and pine trees lining the fairways. A must-play course, accuracy is the key thanks to its numerous doglegs and water hazards. The longer PGA Sultan course was also constructed by European Golf Design with David Jones. arya Golf Club, a heathland inspired golf course on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, opened for play in November 2008. Designed by Thomson Perrett & Lobb, the international golf course architecture practice founded by five times Open Champion Peter Thomson, Carya Golf Club is a striking and naturally beautiful golf course set on undulating sand hills in Belek, near Antalya, a coastal strip that is now home to more than 14 golf courses, featuring designs by Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie, among others. Inspired by classic heathland courses such as Sunningdale and The Berkshire, nearly one million heather sprigs have been planted around Carya Golf Club, on the tops of bunkers and framing holes, giving the course its distinct appearance. And, in a first-of-its-kind project, all of the heather was propagated on site in specially constructed glasshouses. “Carya Golf Club is an extraordinary golf course, built on an exceptional piece of land,” says Peter Thomson, who first visited the site with partner Tim Lobb in 2006. “We immediately realised the potential for an outstanding layout and a golf course that would be unique to the region. Although it is just a few hundred yards from the beach, the terrain is reminiscent of the classic heathland courses near London that I rate among the world’s best, and which I enjoyed much success on as a player – and this was the vision that inspired the design for Carya Golf Club.” Tim Lobb, TPL partner, says: “What sets Carya Golf Club apart is its traditional and classic style. It’s one of the best pieces of land in the region, with a sand ridge that comes into play on numerous holes. The area is heavily forested and the holes run through corridors of trees. There are also spectacular individual pine and eucalyptus tress that have become an integral part of the course strategy. It’s an outstanding site that has enabled us to create a free flowing, expansive and highly natural course.” The newly propagated heather sprigs are establishing themselves onsite strongly and it is anticipated that in time they will establish themselves and carpet areas of the course.

Where the heather is most striking is on the backs of bunkers. Instead of the rounded, grass bunkers that are typical of most resort courses, at Carya the heather dramatically defines the detailed bunker edges and casts dark shadows across the mounding and fairways. With pine trees lining the holes and sandy soil underfoot, there are moments when the golfer could really think they were back on the traditional courses of Surrey or Berkshire. So it’s perhaps not a surprise that among the consultants to have worked on this project is Chris Lomas, course manager of The Berkshire Golf Club. Lomas says: “Heather is renowned in the UK as a feature of some of our finest golf courses, including Sunningdale, Walton Heath and The Berkshire. I think it is tremendous that Thomson Perrett & Lobb is emulating the character of these classic courses in Turkey, where heather already grows naturally, and has gone the extra mile to achieve that goal.”

Carya Golf Club has been designed to be enjoyed by all golfers. The free flowing holes run between pine and eucalyptus trees and across a dramatic sand ridge.
