“Golf is for life. you are never too younG to start and never too old to play” tom watson

HERO OF THE YEAR

tom watson The Open Championship was, as always, one of the most eagerly-anticipated sporting events of the year. With the tournament back at Turnberry, TG Courses Editor Kevin Brown got on the phone to Tom Watson, five-time Open Champion and winner of the famous Duel in the Sun at the stunning links back in 1977. Our man asked Major Tom about his own hopes for the week. The reply was this: “Even with my extended years, I think I can still be competitive and can manage the course.” Kev also asked Tom who he thought would win the event, to which Watson replied: “Somebody with the initials TW!” Well, as it turned out, the TW he meant actually missed the cut and the other TW in the field came within a whisker of taking the Claret Jug at the age of 59! Watson finished in a tie with American Stewart Cink after needing just a par at the last to take the title. He lost in a play-off but his magnificent performance was enough to convince you that he was worthy of the “Hero of the Year” gong. n second: Rory McIlroy (for showing that he is the real deal) n third: Y E Yang (for being the first man to chase Tiger Woods down on day four of a Major and win. Tiger had never lost a Major when holding the lead after 54 holes)

Hero status Watson’s Open performance earned respect – and votes.
