RADÝKAL, ÝSMET BERKAN The president of the Turkish Republic got on an airplane, went to Yerevan, spent half a day there, met one on one with the Armenian president, spent 90 minutes sitting right next to him in front of some 40,000 plus people, later stopped by a reception in Yerevan and then returned to Ankara. And through this all, the world did not collapse, Turkey was not divided, we did not "lose" eastern Anatolia and Azerbaijan was not sold down the river to anyone...That's just how taboos are. They tend to disappear overnight, and you suddenly wake up realizing that you can live without them. No one, of course, expected that one trip alone would be enough to remove the Turks' fear of foreigners, Armenians, minorities and every kind of prejudice that exists in relation to Armenians and other minorities in Turkey. This was at least a start.

A "tug-of-words" erupted between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan and Doðan Media Group owner Aydýn Doðan when newspapers belonging to Doðan published news stories alleging Erdoðan's involvement in a case of fraud surrounding a Turkish charity based in Germany, Deniz Feneri (Lighthouse).

Countering the accusations, Erdoðan increased his rhetoric over the weekend and said the smear campaign against him and his party was being purposefully conducted by Doðan to pressure the government to change a zoning ordinance for land on which the Hilton Hotel is built to fit Doðan's business plan. He said Doðan was attacking him and his party because the Ýstanbul Municipality had not issued a building permit to make renovations and additions to the hotel's premises that Doðan wanted to make. On the other hand, Doðan denied Erdoðan's allegations and said that Erdoðan's words were a threat to freedom of the press in Turkey, in remarks which seem to have sparked more debate about freedom of the press, media-government relations and Turkey's democratic culture.

Star's Þamil Tayyar argues that although the Doðan Media Group had the fraud dossier about Deniz Feneri three-and-a-half months ago, it chose to wait to make these allegations public to blackmail the government into doing certain things. "What did they want to bargain for with the government during this period?

Was it for the additions to the Hilton Hotel, as Erdoðan said? Was it to win a new tender? Was it to acquire new broadcasting rights?

Was it for the handover of the Vatan daily? He maintains that the Doðan group keeping the fraud dossier on hold for a while must certainly be due to something other than a journalistic reflex, else they would have published the allegations as soon as possible.

Yeni Þafak's Kürþat Bumin says it is impossible to encounter such polemics and quarrels in real democracies because in those democracies the state does not have the opportunity to provide financial gains to whomever it wants. "I hope the power of municipalities, ministries and other state institutions to provide financial gains to some groups will come to an end in Turkey as well. Only then will these quarrels and polemics become a thing of the past in Turkey," Bumin says.

Hürriyet's Ferai Týnç levels criticism at Erdoðan for the harsh language he used while countering allegations leveled by Doðan's newspapers. She says the prime minister, instead of turning this into a war of words, could have resorted to legal means if there are untrue accusations about him in the news stories.

"Threatening and intimidating can never be a mechanism to disclaim these allegations," she says, contending that Erdoðan using this method will deal a blow to freedom of the press in Turkey.

Referring to the remarks of Doðan, who termed Erdoðan's statements a threat to freedom of the press in Turkey, another Star columnist, Ahmet Kekeç, says freedom of the press does not include spreading lies about someone. "Freedom of the press is not sitting at a bargaining table with pro-coup gangs to pressure the government into giving them state tenders. It is not supporting memorandums and anti-democratic attempts, either," Kekeç maintains, referring to some reactions in Doðan newspapers in cases when there is an intervention in politics.

What's more, there is a dimension to this all which damages certain freedoms, including freedom of the press. It is quite possible that the impression is starting to spread that the political government is attempting to prevent certain things from being published. Is this Baþbuð's ‘Diyarbakýr expansion'?

BUGÜN, MEHMET METÝNER I find the visit by Chief of General Staff Gen. Ýlker Baþbuð to Diyarbakir both meaningful and valuable. This is for two reasons: The first is that the door to democratic dialogue -- which is necessary in order to achieve a solution -- has been pried open. The second is that the Turkish military authority has for the first time ever come together to meet with civil society organizations. If in fact Baþbuð's "Diyarbakir expansion" (if we can call it that) is espousing some sort of new stance, then the military can also be expected not to oppose any new suggestions that come from the civilian authority in the region which are aimed at finding solutions.

Likewise, we can expect that the military will not be insistent on maintaining its old and useless methods and stances in this region.

Maybe it seems like a place that’s hard to get to, to which few actually make it, but the truth is, if you should happen to make your way to Akseki and its surrounding areas one day, you will find that it is well worth it. On a visit to Akseki, it is inevitable that you will be astounded and transported by the great masterpieces of this city: its wooden homes.

I have a memory that I have kept with me since childhood: There was once a wizened old man, covered entirely in a shawl, standing in the

center of a town square darkened by a snowstorm, trying to sell tangerines, oranges and all sorts of lemony citrus fruits that he had brought from Akseki. He was most likely trying to make a living from this fruity produce, which he had brought from Manavgat or Alanya. I thought about this vision I had of him for years afterwards. That man was both fighting against great difficulties and trying -- despite every barrier put up against him -- to engage in trade. This is a picture which depicts with great accuracy both Akseki itself and its denizens, and the life that they live even today. Trade, no matter

what, always trade -- there is no other way.

There is no other way because Akseki is a historical, gorgeous Anatolian site stuck in the middle of the Taurus (Toros) mountain range, with none of the wide agricultural fields that so many other cities and towns enjoy. It is surrounded by the craggy lines of the Taurus Mountains. In the middle of these craggy, rough, mountainous outlines lies natural and human beauty that has the power to amaze those who behold it. If you decide one day to take a look for yourself at what Akseki has to offer, there are a couple of different ways to get there.

Fly into Antalya and then drive to Akseki by passing through Manavgat or hop on one of the Konya-Manavgat buses that pass through this region. Either way, the first thing you will see on the way here is the Ömer Duruk rest facility. The name Ömer Duruk is an important and symbolic one for Akseki. He was a man who contributed as much to the actual profile as to the mentality that reigns in Akseki. At this rest facility, travelers can taste a range of delicious food at reasonable prices, from gözleme to vegetable-based dishes, from grilled meats to various desserts.

Which expert was it that made these incredible pomegranate ceiling designs? Which culture and civilization was guiding the hands of these artists as they created their work? These gorgeous homes, which have each been turned into places open to the public, offer visitors the chance to eat breakfast for only YTL 5 and lunch for YTL 10 while sitting back in cool divans, surrounded by the magnificent trappings of culture. From these historical windows you can watch time and life pass you by as you eat.

Another place you must not miss in Akseki, if you wish to follow the traces of its trade culture, is the village of Sarýhacýlar. The historical Silk Road, which passed directly through the center of this village, is now a road of specially laid shining stones, with twists and turns that give themselves over to deep thought as you walk upon them. You must definitely grab the chance to walk along this road, imagining the sounds of yesterday’s trade caravans. Of course, you will now notice that no one outside the village’s imam actually lives here these days. But if you do make it here, be sure to see the mosque with its embellished woodworking and its painted mihrab. Interestingly, the homes in this village can be rented and you can stay here for as long as you wish. Believe me, it’s worth it.

Ýbradý a must see Yet another site worth seeing in this region is Ýbradý and its surrounding area, in the past famous for its bureaucrats and now a wonderful place to see wooden homes and people gathered by the sides of the road drinking tea. And of course, the surrounding Taurus Mountains mean that Akseki is a region that you can climb up over and view from high up above. Turkic world gets together on concert stage in Opera Days Opera singers from the Turkic world are counting down the last two days to this year's TÜRKSOY Opera Days, the 11th edition of an international get-together of opera artists from this part of the world, which will bring to an end a five-year hiatus in the event's history.

Organized by the Joint Administration of Turkic Culture and Art (TÜRKSOY), an international body that oversees cultural cooperation among its 14 member states, the TÜRKSOY Opera Days will hold two concerts in two Mediterranean provinces this week. The first concert is scheduled for Thursday night in the southern Mersin province at the Mersin Culture Center. The event travels to Girne in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) for its second and final concert Sunday night.

Twenty-three opera singers from 11 Turkic nations are taking part in this year's event, which is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijani national opera's 1908 production of "Leyla and Mecnun" (Layla and Majnun).

TÜRKSOY General Director Duysen Kasseinov, who is also a former culture minister of Kazakhstan, told the Cihan news agency that the five-act "Leyla and Mecnun" opera, composed in 1907 by Uzeyir Hajibeyov and based on Fuzuli's poem of the same name, was the first-ever opera in the history of Turkic musical culture. "Leyla and Majnun" premiered on Jan. 12, 1908 in the Taghiyev Theater in Baku (currently the State Theater of Musical Comedy). Obul, a Turk of Circassian origin, produces musical instruments, some of which belong to the 6,000-year-old history of Turkish music, with its origins in Central Asia. He produces these instruments quickly with his dexterous hands and has sold them all over the globe.

Ancient Turkish music has affected many parts of the world, from Asia and Europe to South Africa and Latin America. The music of the Turks has even had some influence on old English and Inuit civilizations. Over the centuries, the basis of some Turkish music was influenced by spirituality. Upon the acceptance of Islam by the Turks, Sufi music was created. Some feel that Sufi music strengthens the feelings of love, friendship, solidarity and overall humanity. With this principle in mind Obul decided to produce instruments that give life to this extensive history.

"One of our relatives, Oruç Güven, was the head of the ethnomusicology department at the Cerrahpaþa School of Medicine," Obul said. "At the time, I was working at the university, repairing the roof. One day while working, he asked me to join him at a concert of a group that came from Central Asia. I went to the concert and -from that moment on -- was not the same Feridun. The following day I did not go back to my old job. Instead, I set up a new bench to produce some instruments that were not built in Turkey. Güven had said that there was no master who produced these old Turkish music instruments. That inspired me to be the first."

"It may be odd that I make old, rarely seen instruments," continued Obul, who is skilled enough to reproduce an instrument from a single photograph. "I am good at art. I was carving little tables and chairs when I was not working for someone. I can say that my secret ability has come out. Also, the group that gave that concert

affected me deeply. They were playing so sincerely that they seemed to adore their instruments."

While on the journey from a repairman to a craftsman, Obul did not know any musical notes and says he did not see the necessity of learning them because he thinks sounds of instruments lead him in his pleasant way of music. Obul has given life to over 800 instruments in his little workshop in Sultanahmet. When asked if the only thing that changed a repairman into a craftsman is inspiration, he said without hesitation: "If it isn't, how can I explain my situation? I didn't even know any notes. I was not interested in music. Every single instrument is like my child.

When I sell them, I feel a bit of resentment."

When the university received a new rector, a decision was made that the department of ethnomusicology was not part of the school of medicine, and it was subsequently closed. It was then that this university adventure came to an end, meaning he could no longer produce instruments with Güven and his students.

Nevertheless, Güven continued his career at another university and Obul opened his workshop.

He has been producing instruments for 20 years and is now a unique master of old Turkish instrument production. Although sad that he has been unable to find an apprentice to carry on the work, his daughter Gökçe, who graduated from Ýstanbul University, will carry on his legacy.

While playing his çeng, an Asian harp with either 14 or 24 strings, he tells of how he had a dream and then built several instruments. "I dreamed about many instruments whose names I don't even know. For example, this çeng does not have a tuning system, but after a dream I thought about it for 15 days or longer and devised a tuning system. Lecturers at the university were really very pleased with the discovery."

Many foreigners have an interest in old Turkish music. They visit Obul to see how he builds the instruments, and most of them return home with a newfound love for Turkish music.

The most-wanted instrument is the "rebab" from

Asia. Its body is made of a fish skin-covered coconut and its strings from horsetail hair. It is said that Mevlana Muhammed Jelaluddin Rumi played this instrument. The reason the rebab is so popular is the sound it makes -- a sound said to be the closest to the human voice. "The naturalness of the instruments affects many foreigners. For example, tourists from Europe often don't know any sounds except for electronic ones. They themselves even express that they don't want to hear what they are accustomed to."

There is no other master in the world who can build such instruments. Obul stresses that "each master makes only one or two types of instruments professionally. But what I make is over 800. I don't always make Eastern instruments -Western instruments are well represented as well."

As can be understood from his style, modesty is his worldview. His words prove this: "You ask me if I am very proud of myself or not. I really don't know. What am I supposed to do? This is my life.

The key is modesty; if you are not modest enough, you can change the dynamics of the world. I do not insist that I am, but I know this is the rule."

Obul's work ethic has led him to make instruments that are not widely known, including the rebab, the çeng, the dombra (also known as the dutar), the kýlkopuz, the gubuz (sangobýz), the koray, the sýbýzgý, the mazhar kudüm and many others. He also introduces these instruments abroad and has participated in many exhibitions. One of his products is currently being exhibited at the Austrian state house.

Obul is currently working on a book that will introduce the instruments to a wider audience. The book will provide information on the history and characteristics of each instrument. "I didn't expect so much interest in my book, but I have to finish it in a short time. It has become an obligation," Obul says.

The Çýraðan Palace Kempinski Art Gallery in Ýstanbul, in its first exhibition of the new art season, is hosting a collection of new works by contemporary artist Yiðit Yazýcý. Titled "Þehirlerin Renkleri" (The Colors of Cities) and curated by Beste Gürsu of the Art and Life Gallery, the collection consists of oils on canvas and silkscreen prints depicting major world cities such as Berlin, St. Petersburg and Dubai.

Broadway said goodbye Sunday to "Rent," 12 years and 5,124 performances after it first became a rock musical with a message for theatergoers of all ages. "Like we did when we opened, we dedicate this performance to Jonathan Larson," said actor Adam Kantor, referring to the man who wrote the show's book, music and lyrics. Then "Rent" was off and running toward its final curtain that had the last cast as well as members of its original company together on stage at the end of the evening to sing an electric version of "Seasons of Love," one of the show's best-known songs.

"There's mixed emotions, but it's time," said Allan S. Gordon, one of its producers, talking about the closing.

The show and book was born offBroadway in triumph and tragedy.

Larson died of an aortic aneurism after its final dress rehearsal in January 1996. He was 35. Larson's tale of free-spirited artists and street people in a gritty drug- and AIDSplagued East Village of the early 1990s touched several generations. Rave reviews propelled "Rent" to Broadway where the musical opened the following April at the Nederlander Theatre, a house often shunned by producers because it was on the wrong side of 42nd Street. The show, inspired by Puccini's "La Boheme," found a ready-made audience in young people.

Its fanatical supporters were nicknamed "Rentheads." The show won Tonys, Obies and the Pulitzer Prize for drama as well as grossing more than $280 million during its Broadway run. Millions more were made from national tours and foreign productions that performed on six continents. A film version, using much of the original cast, was released in 2005. New York AP

The Ankara-based Bilkent Symphony Orchestra (BSO) perform two Ramadan concerts will this week, welcoming the new concert season under the baton of its new musical director, Klaus Weise.

The concerts are slated for Thursday and Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Bilkent Concert Hall. In the first concert, the orchestra will be accompanying soprano Naira Abrahamyan and tenor Daniel Magdal as soloists in a program that consists of overtures from C.M. Weber's "Der Freischütz" and Glinka's "Russlan and Ludmilla," arias from Puccini's "Turandot" and Verdi's "Aida," as well as the prelude from Wagner's "Die Meistersinger," among others. The program of Saturday's concert will feature selected pieces from Puccini's well-known operas "Madama Butterfly," "La Boheme" and "Manon Lescaut."

A kick-off for peace?

Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan’s recent invitation to Turkish President Abdullah Gül to visit Yerevan to watch a football match together was historic. Given the two countries’ long-strained relations, this visit would have been remarkable at any time.

But coming as it does only one month after the alarming Russian-Georgian confrontation, it may offer real hope that tensions in the volatile Caucasus region can be eased.

Of course, ancient and difficult issues divide Armenia and Turkey. But now is the moment for both countries to put the past aside in order to address their common security concerns.

In the new context set by the war in Georgia, the urgency of Turkey becoming a real bridge between the nations of the Caucasus is not lost on anyone.

This expectation is an inevitable consequence of Turkey’s geography and history. Situated figuratively between modernity and tradition, secularism and Islam, and democracy and tyranny, Turkey also is an actual physical bridge between East and West. For the peoples of the Caucasus, Turkey marks our path to Europe. It is a NATO member, bordering the three Caucasus republics that have NATO Individual Partnership Action Programs. It aspires to join the European Union, and would bring the EU to our three borders, even as we, too, aspire to join one day.

Indeed, Turkey has never missed an opportunity to present itself as a regional broker. Immediately after the collapse of

the Soviet Union, Turkey proposed the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. This year, as the American-led effort to mediate a Middle East peace settlement began to falter, Turkey took up the job of mediator in both the IsraeliPalestinian conflict and the conflict between Syria and Israel. Now, in the immediate wake of the RussiaGeorgia crisis, Turkey’s leaders have stepped forward once again to take a leadership role in the Caucasus.

The world must fervently hope that the Turkish proposal for a Caucasus Stability and Cooperation Platform is more serious and sustained than previous similar efforts. But, in order to succeed, Turkey must firmly pursue a pledge from all the region’s players to repudiate the use of force in settling their disputes. If this pledge is adopted and respected, conflicts in the region will be viewed in a wholly different, more tolerant context, marking a historic breakthrough to peace.

In fact, why not take the idea of such a pact one step further? We in this region can, and I believe should,

call for a non-aligned Caucasus, free of security blocs and adversarial alliances. After all, security alliances and guarantees only create dividing lines, with their attendant security challenges.

Our countries and peoples have, throughout history, lived under a common umbrella for far longer than we have been divided. Today, we share a common vision of European integration, and it is in this broader context that our conflicts should be resolved. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visits to Georgia and Russia proved that there is no substitute for Europe insofar as the Caucasus is concerned. Only Europe can play the role of honest broker in the region’s atmosphere of suspicion and intolerance.

But, at the end of the day, we ourselves must be willing to work toward a region of peace and cooperation. The Caucasus is too small a space for closed borders and explosive conflicts. Although some of those tensions appear purely bilateral, the Georgian-Russian conflict demonstrates that there is no such thing any-

more in this globalized world, and certainly not in this interconnected region.

In fact, real peace in the Caucasus requires two key strategic transformations. One is a lesson from history: Russia’s strategic interests here cannot be ignored. To believe and behave otherwise would lead to regional chaos.

The other lesson is that Turkey and Armenia cannot remain adversaries forever. There must be normalization in our relations in order for the Caucasus to coalesce into a functional region.

Ironically, both Russia and the United States recognize that this is in their interest. The Russians view normal relations between Turkey and Armenia as a way to minimize Georgia’s strategic role in the region. The US views an opening to Turkey as a way to decrease Armenia’s real and imagined reliance on Russia.

Beyond the emotional impact of President Gül’s visit to Yerevan, real improvement in Turkish-Armenian relations requires opening the two countries’ closed border -- the last in Europe. Or, for a start, the existing railroad link between the two countries could be made operational. If this does not happen within the coming weeks and months, then Turkey will have demonstrated that all this was just a show.

President Gül’s visit does mark a watershed -- either as a failure to make history, or as the beginning of a new era.

Today we would like to leave our column to Artak Aleksanyan to share his observations about Saturday’s football game between Turkey and Armenia and its implications on Armenian society. Aleksanyan is an Armenian journalist and the news anchor of Armenia’s public TV station. Before the game we asked Aleksanyan to write down his observations about what the Armenian people feel about the game and developments that seem to be opening a new chapter between Turkey and Armenia. This is what Aleksanyan had to say: A week without … … a miracle Sunday, 10 p.m.: I have been trying to reach any one of the Armenian experts on Turkey the whole day. It seems that no one is able to talk about Turkish President Abdullah Gül’s visit to Armenia.

Everyone -- literally everyone -- is discussing the Armenia-Turkey game. Everyone is mad and angry at the Armenian team; we were expecting more. We knew that Turkey’s team is one of the best in the world, but you cannot help but have hope or dream for a victory.

It is said the difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that a pessimist is a well-informed optimist. I think last Saturday all Armenians who watched football were well-informed romantics. … bad Turkey It has been a week about Turkey: We used to talk about our neighbor only when we needed to talk about genocide. Last week was the first one in which news was about cooperation, regional security and the Caucasian stability platform that was recently suggested by the Turkish prime minister. We were trying to present the very diverse opinions on Gül’s visit and the Armenia-Turkey relationship but somehow ended up summarizing only two sides: Everyone is actually a proponent of the normalization of the Armenian-Turkey relationship -- the only party that is still suspicious about that is Dashnakcutyun. Even radical opposition leader and first Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan supported current Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan in inviting Gül to watch the football match. … information What can we expect from Turkey besides genocide? Are we ready to establish a normal relationship? Are ordinary Turks friendly?

Do they hate Armenians? Will they kill Armenians? Will they invade Armenia if we open the border? Are our products economically ready to compete with the prices and quality of those made in Turkey?

I know that for Turks those questions may be very amusing, simplistic and sometimes very offensive. A Turkish friend of mine once said: “We are polite and civilized people. But how should I know about that when for the last 100 years not only the borders were closed but also the flow of information. Ordinary Armenians do not know anything about Turkey. They know that Turks killed 1.5 million Armenians 100 years ago, but they do not know modern Turks.”

Yes, there are some Armenians who come to Turkey for work and trade, but they usually speak about money and the market, not about culture and society. So, if we are going to establish or re-establish normal relations, before that, there should be a campaign to raise awareness about the two countries: simple, human stories about people who live, work, fall in love, get married. … an agenda Do the presidents of both countries need to normalize relations? I think so. For Turkey, an open border with Armenia is a very good point for its EU membership ambitions. For Armenia, our government is stuck between the West and Russia. We can’t move anymore. One step toward any of those will signal danger from another side. Russia is now a very jealous and angry “strategic partner.” The West is too polite and slow during a crisis situation. So, the move toward Turkey will be the right one. It would move our foreign policy in a new direction and open new opportunities for business.

However, this has been the first week in which top-officials spoke about each other without antagonism. The Armenian president met with Armenian diplomats last week and said everything should be done to convince the international community and Turkey of how important a Gyumri-Kars railway is. For the first time, the Turkish president did not ignore the existence of Armenia when talking about regional cooperation in the Caucasus.

So, the only question is, how long will this Turkish-Armenian “game” last? Will it continue? And I don’t mean the next football game.

I have started to learn Turkish in the US while working on my M.A. in communications. I feel that in the very near future I may need it.

Brýtney Spears sweeps at VMAs A year after her disastrous comeback attempt at the MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears swept the event on Sunday, winning the first three "Moonman" statuettes of her career.

The pop singer, whose career has been overshadowed in recent years by a litany of personal woes, took home the awards for video of the year, best pop video and best female video, all for the tune "Piece of Me." "I'm in shock right now," the 26-year-old starlet said, after taking the stage for the third time to receive the coveted award for video of the year. In her brief acceptance speeches, she doled out multiple thanks to God, her family and her fans.

But the 25th annual broadcast of the lifestyle cable channel's flagship bash did not begin promisingly for

"Lollipop" for best hip-hop video.

The show was hosted by British comedian Russell Brand, who is known for his scene-stealing turn as a lovably sleazy rock star in the romantic comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." The awards were held in Los Angeles for the first time in a decade, on the historic studio lot of MTV's corporate sibling, Paramount Pictures. The lifestyle cable network used the faux city streets, rooftops, and sound stages all over the Paramount lot to show various performances. Last year, 7.1 million MTV viewers watched the festivities, according to Nielsen Media Research. Tolstoy was the first to compile an "interreligious calendar," where he quoted passages from the holy texts of different religions.

Today is the national day of the Democratic People's Republic of [North] Korea (DPRK). On this day in 1948, the DPRK was founded. In the aftermath of the Japanese occupation of Korea, which ended with Japan's defeat in World War II, the Soviet Union took the surrender of Japanese forces and controlled the area north of the 38th parallel while the United States controlled the area south of the parallel.

The Soviets and Americans disagreed on the implementation of joint trusteeship over Korea, with each establishing its socioeconomic and political system upon its jurisdiction, leading, in 1948, to the establishment of ideologically opposed governments and in the end different states.

Today Luxembourg holds a ceremony commemorating the liberation of grand duchy by the Allied forces in 1944. A special ceremony is held at the monument of the American soldier.

Today is the day of Historical Procession in Tournai, Belgium. This traditional cultural observance is held annually on the Sunday closest to Sept. 8. Today is Chrysanthemum Day in Japan. This traditional Chrysanthemum Festival is one of the five sacred festivals of ancient Japan. A wondrous display of chrysanthemum varieties is presented on this day. Figures of trained chrysanthemums are exhibited, chrysanthemum wine is drunk and, in Korea, chrysanthemum cakes are eaten. An interesting custom associated with this festival is that of putting cotton wool on chrysanthemum flowers on the festival day's eve.

The next morning, the cotton, now wet with either dew or frost, is removed and the body wiped with it. This is known as "cotton nursing of the chrysanthemum" and shows the desire both to protect the flowers and to use the dew of the early frosts to cure the ailments of humankind.

Today's date is known as the Double-Yang in Taiwan because the number "9" is a special number dedicated to the "yang" principle of the sun. This day is also called the "Double Ninth." In Singapore, this day is observed as the Festival of the Nine Imperial Gods. The main focus of activities is the festival in which devotees consume a vegetarian diet for one to 12 days. The first day is marked by a procession to a river or the sea to "fetch the Nine Imperial Gods." After this ritual, devotees crowd through the temple doors. Inside the temple, food offerings are placed on the altar and some Chinese operas are performed.

Many years ago there were airships in the skies.

Airships were large balloons. They were full of gas to keep them in the air, but the gas was dangerous and burned quickly.

One of the largest airships was called the Hindenburg. This was a German airship. It was 245 meters long and it carried more than 100 people. It could move through the sky at 120 kilometer an hour. Its journey across the Atlantic took a week. The Hindenburg had 16 bags of gas inside it. When the airship was on the ground these bags were empty. When the pilot of the airship wanted to leave the ground, he filled the bags with gas.

For four months in 1935 the Hindenburg flew every week between Germany and America.

Most of the passengers were rich people. They liked the Hindenburg because, although the journey cost a lot of money, it was very comfortable. On 6 May 1935 when the Hindenburg was landing in America, it caught fire and crashed.

The people on the ground could do nothing to help the passengers in the airship. 34 people died.97 people jumped to the ground and lived.

For many years after the Hindenburg crash everyone stopped using airships. They thought they were too dangerous. Nowadays, however, there are new gases that do not burn quickly.

Some people think that there will soon be many airships in the skies again because they are much cleaner and quieter than planes.

I am a fitness freak. Everyone should exercise for good mental and physical health. My main problem is getting up at 5:00 a.m., to get to the health club before work. If it is too difficult to drag my aching body out of bed, I wait until early evening. Whether or not one time was better for me had never occurred to me.

The experts say that morning workouts are beneficial because people are more likely to stick to a routine that won’t be sidelined by social plans. Some say you burn more fat in the morning because you haven’t eaten yet. Others state that evening workouts are more effective because your body is already warmed-up, and you can last longer.

The world would be a very different place if someone hadn’t invented the lift. There would be few, if any, high rise buildings because people would refuse to climb many stairs. By the time workers reached their offices on the top floors of a tower building, it would be time to go home - if they were not too tired for the long walk down!

The first lift that we know about was used by the Greek scientist, Archimedes, in about 230 BC. It was a simple platform that could be pulled up and down with a rope. A lift like this was used much later, in the twelfth century, by priests who lived on the top of a mountain at Metereo in Greece. Because they were frightened of thieves, the priests had not built any stairs up the mountain. The only way up was by lift, which the priests worked from the top of the mountain.

A few hundred years later, a Frenchman, Villayer, invented ‘a flying chair’ which still used a rope and a platform, but it also used a counterweight in a shaft. This was the first lift shaft. A number of rich people had these ‘flying chairs’ built in their homes, including Queen Anne of
