to NSNA’s 62nd Annual Convention!

Welcome to Nashville! On behalf of the 2013-2014 NSNA Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome you to Nashville, Tennessee, for the NSNA 62nd Annual Convention. Attending the Annual Convention is yet another exciting step towards transitioning into the top nurses, leaders, and educators of tomorrow. I applaud your commitment to healthcare, education, and leadership. You will leave Nashville with valuable experience, new friends, and happy memories. This week is yours. Now is the time to learn and network. Take advantage of the plenary sessions, focus sessions and association activity seminars. Visit the Exhibit Hall and bring your résumé to the Career Development Center. This year’s Annual Convention kicks off on Wednesday. The Opening Ceremony features keynote speaker Dr. Gloria Ferraro Donnelly. During the Opening Ceremony, scholarship sponsors and recipients are recognized, along with the Marilyn Bagwell Leadership Grant Award winner and Honorary Membership recipient. After the Opening Ceremony, head over to the annual First Night Party with special guest, the Randy McLellan Band, for some music and fun. On Saturday, the Annual Convention comes to a close with the Closing Ceremony and endnote speaker Virginia Trotter Betts. The Closing Ceremony also features the official introduction of the 2014-15 NSNA Board of Directors and Nominating and Elections Committee. NSNA program award winners and Stellar School Chapter Award winners are also recognized at this time. Copies of the Convention News are available each morning, Wednesday-Saturday, in the Press Room and in designated bins throughout the Convention Center. Convention Information Alcohol Policy

Alcoholic beverages are not served at NSNA student program events. Participants may not use, consume or carry alcohol into or upon the premises of any venue where such events are held; nor shall any participant use premises of any facility provided by NSNA, including Student Activity Tables, to promote events or sell tickets or promotional items that endorse events where alcohol is served. Those of legal drinking age who choose to consume alcoholic beverages, off the premises of NSNA sponsored events, are urged to do so responsibly.

NSNA Awards are presented throughout the Convention. The Marilyn Bagwell Grant and NSNA Honorary Membership are presented during the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday. Scholarship sponsors and recipients are also honored during this time. The Project InTouch Grand Prize Winner and Leader of Leaders Award are presented during the Thursday plenary session. The Isabel Hampton Robb Award and the NSNA/Nurse. com Essay Contest Winner are presented during the Friday plenary session. Finally, NSNA honors its top program winners at Saturday’s Closing Ceremony. NSNA Stellar School Chapter Award winners are announced during the Opening Ceremony and recognized formally during the Closing Ceremony.

Convention Information (Continued) Events Planned by Attendees

The Convention Center is a non-smoking facility. Any party/ event planned for the Convention Center or hotel must have clearance obtained by NSNA. The Board of Directors asks you to follow these guidelines: Require NSNA Convention badges for entrance; set and promote defined hours for the event; emphasize respect for hotel property and other hotel guests; use appropriate containers/bags for trash disposal; keep noise to a minimum; and do not serve alcohol.

Internet Access (WiFi)

Guests at the Gaylord Opryland receive wireless internet (included in the NSNA guest room rate), which can be accessed only in guest rooms and atrium areas (including Cascades Atrium, Garden Conservatory, and Delta Atrium). Complimentary WiFi is unavailable in the Convention Center areas.

Photography and Filming

The official NSNA photographer takes photos for NSNA’s website and publications. Video recording may take place. If you do not wish to be photographed, be on camera, or appear in any publications, please inform the photographer or videographer. Only official NSNA videographers may videotape.

Faculty

Support from faculty/deans is essential for students to continue pursuing leadership experience and attend NSNA events. Special programming is offered to faculty to earn continuing education contact hours along with opportunities to meet peers in the faculty lounge (see page 9 for location/hours). Look for the “Faculty Workshop” logo in the program schedule.

Food and Beverage

Food from outside vendors may not be brought into meeting rooms, or be sold/distributed in the convention center, hotel, Exhibit Hall, Campaign Headquarters, or Student Activity Tables.

See page 9 for location and hours. The Project Showcase features NSNA members/faculty displaying posters representing their projects and research. Poster presenters can request an identifying ribbon at the Convention Office. All materials must be picked up no later than noon on Saturday. Although Convention security measures are in effect, NSNA is not responsible for lost or damaged posters. No selling of items or raffles may take place in the Project Showcase display area.

There are numerous dining options throughout the property. See a hotel concierge for more information. Concessions are available in the Convention Center during select hours. Check Convention News or www.nsnaconvention.org for specific times.

Fundraisers (FNSNA)

Annual Challenge: during the House of Delegates break on Saturday, the FNSNA challenges all attendees to support undergraduate scholarships by approaching a microphone to declare a contribution (or donation commitment) while challenging others to match it. Rise to the occasion in this spirited and fun challenge! Fun Run 5K Run/1K Walk: Promoting health and wellness while raising funds for the undergraduate scholarship program, the Fun Run is Saturday morning at 7:00am at the Presidential Portico. Registration fees: $22.20 per person (includes administration fee). Register by Friday at www.nsna.me/raceit2014. Music City Auction: See page 15.

Code of Conduct for NSNA Meetings The National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) acknowledges the rights and privileges of members, visitors, faculty, speakers, exhibitors, student activity table sponsors, program and event sponsors, and all those who attend NSNA meetings and conventions to be treated with respect and courtesy. To ensure an environment conducive to professional growth and development, the NSNA Board of Directors approved the following Code of Conduct:

Exhibitors:

1. All exhibitors must follow the policies as stated in the Exhibit Prospectus and the application for exhibit space. 2. All exhibit booths must have a professional appearance and may display or sell items considered to reflect a professional image of nursing. Items deemed to demean or discredit the profession of nursing and/or nursing students, patients/ clients, faculty and others, shall be removed at the request of the NSNA Board of Directors. (If there is any question about the nature of this regulation, exhibitors are encouraged to request that NSNA review items they are planning to sell prior to arrival at convention or conference site. Contact Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc. for more information.) 3. NSNA may, at its discretion, accept or reject any application for exhibit space. 4. When collecting personal data from attendees, exhibitors are required to disclose how the information will be used and shared with others. 5. No beverages containing alcohol may be served, offered, or distributed in the exhibit hall or in any activity associated with NSNA. 6. Any infringement of the Code of Conduct should be immediately reported to the show management or NSNA staff.

Speakers:

1. Speakers are expected to present topics appropriate for entry-level registered nurses in the case of NSNA members; and content appropriate for faculty for faculty workshops. 2. Speakers are expected to dress in business attire when making presentations and in all formal settings. Contact NSNA to request guidelines for business attire.* 3. Speakers shall not solicit business, present product information, distribute products, and promote their own business, or use the program in any manner whatsoever to inform attendees about products and services. An exhibit booth may be rented for this purpose. 4. Adhere to deadlines for providing NSNA with program information such as but not limited to: speaker biography, program objectives and outline of content, audiovisual needs request, hotel arrival and departure dates. 5. Stay within time limits as determined by NSNA and provide time for questions and answers when appropriate. 6. Handouts are the responsibility of the speaker unless otherwise arranged with NSNA. Written permission must be obtained by speaker to distribute copyrighted information. 7. Speakers must request permission to photograph, videotape, film, or record their own presentation no less than 10 days prior to the scheduled program. The official show photographer, NSNA staff, and designated contractors are exempt from this rule. 8. NSNA may, at its discretion, accept or reject any request to sponsor or present a program. 9. Topics for presentation are determined collaboratively with sponsor and NSNA; NSNA shall have the right to approve all final program topics and content.

10. Topics and speakers shall not be substituted without written permission of NSNA.

Student Activity Tables:

1. Official NSNA school and state chapters may rent a table for the purpose of raising funds for their chapter. (Due to fees imposed by the Convention Center, there is a fee of $25 to rent ½ table.) 2. The chapter representative must sign the Student Activity Table Regulations and Disclaimer document and pay the required table rental fee prior to placing items on the table. 3. Fund-raising items must reflect a professional image of nursing. Items deemed to demean or discredit the profession of nursing and/or nursing students, patients/clients, faculty and others, shall be removed at the request of the NSNA Board of Directors. No food or beverages may be sold or distributed from student activity tables. (If there is any question about the nature of this regulation, chapter representatives are encouraged to seek clarification prior to arrival at convention or conference site. Contact NSNA for more information.) 4. Accept responsibility for safeguarding items and funds. NSNA does not provide security for the Student Activity Tables. 5. No beverages containing alcohol may be served, distributed, offered, sold or raffled at student activity tables. 6. Procedures for handling allegations of unethical conduct at association activity tables: a. All allegations of unethical or unprofessional conduct shall be immediately reported in writing and delivered to a member of the NSNA Board of Directors or NSNA Executive Staff member. b. Three representatives of the NSNA Board of Directors will meet with all involved in the conduct in question. c. The Board representatives will determine the outcome of the conduct. Penalties may include: • Removal of item(s) in question; • Removal of student activity table. d. The action of the Board representatives may be appealed to the full Board of Directors within 24 hours. e. Following appeal, the decision of the Board of Directors shall be final.

Meeting Etiquette:

1. All attendees of NSNA conventions and conference shall conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner showing respect to others at all times. 2. All attendees shall keep their badge in full view at all times while attending the meeting. 3. All members shall conduct themselves in accordance with the NSNA Code of Professional Conduct. 4. All attendees are asked to arrive on time to meetings, events, and programs and attend the entire meeting. 5. Professional business attire or business casual attire is acceptable style of dress for professional meetings.* Please direct your questions and concerns to a member of the NSNA Board of Directors or to an NSNA Executive Staff member. Approved by the NSNA Board of Directors on February 12, 2006. *Guidelines for proper attire may be found on page 58.

Preslated Candidates

All preslated candidates must sign in with the NEC in Campaign Headquarters no later than Thursday at 9:00 am or they will be removed from the slate. For more information, see the Campaign Regulations in the Business Book.

Policy on Nominations from the Floor

Candidates may be nominated from the floor of the House of Delegates on Wednesday and Friday, provided their credentials are in order.* *See the Business Book for restrictions and complete details. Contact the Nominating and Elections Committee.

Are You a Delegate?

See page 9 for Delegate Credentialing location and hours. During Business Meetings, all delegates are seated in the House of Delegates according to state in a special seating area. To sit in the designated area, all delegates must have their credentials approved. Delegates must wear their delegate ribbon for easy identification and entrance to the delegate area. Throughout the Convention, delegates are required to attend specific meetings. These are clearly marked as mandatory in this Program Book with the above logo. The closing House of Delegates meeting is on Saturday, and it is important that all delegates remain at the meeting until it is adjourned to maintain quorum. Special responsibilities as a delegate may prevent you from attending some Convention activities. However, the importance of your role as a delegate and a leader in making decisions for the organization compensates for those missed activities. All delegates, faculty advisors, and state consultants receive a Business Book.

Resolutions Committee

See page 9 for Resolution Office meeting hours and location. The Business Book explains the procedures for resolutions. The NSNA Resolutions Committee is responsible for screening all resolutions prior to presentation to the delegates. Author Meetings: Appointments have been pre-scheduled online. Authors without a pre-scheduled appointment may stop by the Resolutions Office beginning at 10am on Tuesday to schedule an appointment. Missed appointments must be re-scheduled onsite with the Committee. Resolution Hearings: Mandatory attendance for delegates. See Business Book for resolutions procedures. Resolutions Hearings are Thursday, 3:45pm - 7:00pm and Friday, 7:30pm - 10:00pm. Roundtables and Documentation Review: Resolution authors for the resolutions heard each day are available at information tables located in the Resolutions Hearing room for 30 minutes before and after the Hearings. Delegates are invited to ask specific questions and discuss the resolutions with the authors. Authors are asked to bring documentation for review. Documentation may also be reviewed online. Resolutions Document

When the Resolutions Committee finalizes the Resolutions Document, it is posted online. Download it Thursday morning from www.nsnaconvention.org.

Checking out the Candidates

Delegates are responsible for electing the best possible national officers for the Board of Directors and Nominating and Elections Committee members. While in your room, always use deadbolt behind you. Don’t leave your door unlocked or propped open, even if going down the hall for ice. Call the front desk to verify hotel staff, security guards or others requesting entry to your room. Move around hotel in groups and report suspicious behavior to hotel security. Don’t leave valuables out in the open. Use safe if available.

Outside the Convention Center:

• Do not wear your Convention badge. • Do not text and walk. Be aware of your surroundings. • Always travel in groups, avoiding dark and low traffic pedestrian areas. • When traveling by taxi, go in a group, use seat belts, and note taxi number in case of lost items, overcharges and for security reasons. • Don’t display a large amount of cash in public. Plan to use debit/credit cards. Always buy from reputable merchants, not from someone who may be gone tomorrow. • Those of legal drinking age who choose to consume alcohol are urged to do so responsibly. It’s a good idea for at least one person in your group to volunteer to refrain from alcohol consumption, as a guide or“designated walker,”so to speak.

Read the emergency instructions on the back of your door and make note of the floor plan, nearest emergency exits, fire extinguisher and fire alarms. In a smoke-filled room, crawl to the nearest exit stairwell. Never take an elevator. If you must remain in your room, wet sheets and towels and place around doors to keep smoke out. The Foundation of the National Student Nursesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association (FNSNA)

sponsors a fundraising auction to benefit the Mary Anne Tuft Scholarship Fund. The official headquarters for the FNSNA fundraiser is the Convention & Fundraising Office. The Music City Auction Procedures

1. The auction takes place on Friday, April 11, 1:45 pm 3:15 pm in the back of the Exhibit Hall. 2. Anyone may donate items. 3. Items to be auctioned must be brought to the Fundraising Office before noon Thursday. 4. Some items may have opening bids. 5. A list of auction items is available in the Fundraising Office and is distributed during the auction. 6. Visa, MasterCard, checks with ID, and cash are accepted as payment for auction items.

Guidelines for Auction and Fundraising Activities Auction

1. Value of items to be auctioned: Items must be at least a $30 value. 2. Minimum bids may be placed on items valued over $50, at the discretion of the auction coordinator. 3. Number of items to be auctioned: A limit on the number of items to be auctioned may be set by the auction coordinator, along with a cut-off time for the acceptance of items. Items received for auction after that number has been reached, or after the time limit, may be refused. The number and time limits may be publicized during the convention. 4. No more than three of the same item will be accepted for auction. 5. All items are auctioned in the order listed. Items from exhibitors donated during the auction will be auctioned last. 6. NSNA is not responsible for defective auction items, nor services not fulfilled. 7. Individuals donating personal services will fill out the appropriate form to be given to the purchaser. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to contact the donor. 8. Once the auction has begun, items may not be withdrawn, and their stated value may not be changed. 9. Professional Attire for Interviews and Business Meetings Interviewing for a new nursing position or attending a business meeting (like the NSNA Annual Convention) are great opportunities to display your professionalism --in what you say, how you say it, and how you look! The 2005-06 NSNA Board of Directors developed a Code of Conduct for NSNA Meetings. Item five under Meeting Etiquette states that “Professional business attire or business casual attire is acceptable style of dress for professional meetings.”When interviewing, it is best to dress in professional business attire. If you are unsure about dressing in professional business or business casual attire, then be sure to ask others are attending the same meeting, or others who have attended a previous meeting. The following suggestions are provided as guidelines for professional business/business casual attire. Accessories can add a special touch of color, texture, and pattern to your outfit and are considered a complementary part of both business professional and business casual attire. Also, if you wear fragrance, keeping it light and minimal is recommended in a professional setting to be considerate of others you meet who may be sensitive to chemicals. Remember to shake hands, smile, and introduce yourself to new friends and old acquaintances. Exchange business cards (however, remember to use caution when giving out personal information such as home address, phone number, and e-mail address) and keep a file of contacts for future networking. You will make a lasting first impression on your peers and the many business and nursing professionals you have met. You are on your way to a very successful nursing career!

Realities of the Current Job Market ®Thinkstock

The National League for Nursing and the National Student Nurses’ Association are keenly aware of the entry-level job situation for new graduates. We are providing this resource to help you prepare for a very competitive job market. What are the facts? • Although there is a shortage of registered nurses, the economic recession has flooded the RN market with experienced nurses who were retired, planning to retire, or went from part-time to full-time employment. • The need for RNs has declined due to low hospital census (resulting from lower elective surgeries/procedures; high unemployment; and high rate of those without health insurance). • Employers are hiring new graduates with baccalaureate degrees; new grads with associate degrees and diplomas are having more difficulty finding entry-level employment. • Many open RN positions require at least 2 years of experience. • Graduations from nursing school are at an all-time high. • New graduates are expensive to orient and many move on to other employers after only 1-2 years, which adds to the cost of recruiting and orienting new employees. There has been an increase in RN retention due to economic factors—nurses are staying in their current positions. • Once the economy improves and unemployment decreases, the shortage of RNs will become critical.

What can you do? • As a nursing student, work as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) this will get your “foot in the door” and you will gain valuable experience. Be sure to make a good impression and get to know your coworkers and managers. • This is a great time to continue your education—if you have a diploma or associate degree, explore RN to BSN and RN to MSN programs; if you have a BSN, explore masters degree in nursing programs. Many programs are available online. Some of the RN completion programs require students to work while in the program and they receive credit for their clinical hours.

• Before you graduate: Meet with your college/university career services department (submit your name and resume to their data base) at least one semester or quarter prior to graduation and follow-up 2 weeks prior to commencement. Introduce yourself to the alumni chapter members of your educational institution; attend meetings and ask them to help you find your first job. • Always include a cover letter when you submit your resumé and application. When you do get an interview, make a great impression through your professional appearance and interviewing skills. Practice interviewing skills and get an interview coach/mentor. This can be any seasoned nurse who can practice with you. • Network at every opportunity available to you. Get to know the nurses at health care agencies in the area where you want to work. They can let you know when positions for new grads open up on their units. • Smile! When you do land an interview, show that you are excited about the position and express your enthusiasm about working at the agency. • Keep in contact with your mentor. If you don’t have a mentor, seek one out. All of the suggestions addressed here can be executed more easily with the assistance of a mentor. • Take the licensure exam as soon as possible after graduation. Most hiring agencies will not consider your application unless you have passed NCLEX. • Check with the state board of nursing in your state to learn the rules and regulations for RNs to work in other roles (i.e. CNA). Note that if there are Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse positions available you may want to check with the state board of nursing to see if it is feasible for you to be licensed for this role (until RN positions open up). Remember that if you are licensed as an RN and working in a different role, you will be held to the higher standard (that of an RN)—so you must be careful to practice in the role and job description that you are hired for.

• Join a professional nurses association (i.e., the American Nurses Association and/or state nurses’ association; specialty nursing organizations) and network with members—let them know you are seeking employment. Finding a job may rely on who knows you and what you can do, more than anything else. • Be open and flexible—you may not get the position you want, but finding an entry-level position that will give you experience and professional-growth opportunities as well as health insurance benefits, is essential. (Note that NSNA’s health insurance benefit can be extended for 9 months after graduation as long as you are enrolled in the insurance plan as a student.) • Look outside of the acute-care setting for entry-level positions such as long-term care; rehabilitation setting; community health; camp and school nursing; veteran administration hospitals and facilities; local and state departments of health; agency work; wellness work sites or employee or college/university health center. • Even if a residency or internship is not in your specialty interest area and pays less than other positions, still consider taking the position if it is offered to you. Being employed as a nurse is your highest priority. Note that some residency and internship programs are very competitive. Many of these programs work with specific schools (i.e., schools that do clinical rotations at their facility) and these students receive priority placement (if positions remain available, then they look at other new grads). • Consider career enhancing opportunities to gain clinical experience (i.e., mission work; international opportunities; assisting your mentor with research). • Cultivate relationships and stay connected to every nurse and healthcare worker that you know and keep them up-to-date about your job search. Networking is the key to awareness of employment opportunities. • Stay current through continuing education and consider taking the time to complete certification opportunities. • If you are not tied to your community, move to where the jobs are. If you are tied to your community, consider asking your family to help you make this next step of relocating temporarily or working away from home and returning at designated times. Use family and friends in other areas of your town, city or state as possible contacts for help in arranging a new temporary or permanent residence to acquire jobs where there is a greater need for new graduates.

• Routinely check websites, newspapers, the NSNA Career Center, and nursing publications for job availability. Check the hospital or agency web sites daily as this is where job openings are often first announced. • Make sure that your resumé truly reflects your education, skills and experience. If you are an active NSNA or community leader, this is important to include. Review your resumé and any job applications with your mentor. • Purchase an “interview business suit and shoes” and be sure to look professional when you land an interview. • Be sure that you know the terms of student loans. Check to see if there is any way you can delay your student loan repayment until you are employed. Also check into loan forgiveness programs. • Be very aware of the early signs of burnout and be sure to address them. Develop good relationships with your nurse manager and co-workers and always ask for assistance when you need it. • Let your school of nursing know about the hiring situation in your area so that they can use this data to strategically plan for the number of enrollments. Do not give up nursing! We know that there is a nursing shortage looming and this is a temporary situation. Keep your nursing passion alive and take every opportunity to progress in your nursing education and develop your professional identity.
