UNITED WAY OF WAYNE & HOLMES COUNTIES 2017 Annual Report
UNITED WAY FIGHTS TO REDUCE LOCAL POVERTY.
MISSION: UNITED WAY MOBILIZES COMMUNITY RESOURCES TO HELP PEOPLE MEASURABLY IMPROVE THEIR LIVES. At United Way, we are focused on reducing local poverty. Our goal is to help change community conditions to help people achieve self-sufficiency. Bridges Out of Poverty tells us that poverty is the extent to which one functions without resources. To accomplish the Bold Goal of moving 10,000 people out of poverty by 2025, we help build resources that impact poverty. Last year, United Way of Wayne and Holmes Counties celebrated sixty years of mobilizing resources in our community. This year, we are working toward large scale changes that last. United Way has evolved from our roots as a fundraising organization to also include community impact work in Wayne and Holmes Counties. We help mobilize local partners—businesses, community leaders, and residents—to reduce poverty and expand opportunities for people to become more self-sufficient. This year’s annual report shines a light on local people we helped, as well as those who made it possible.
BOLD GOAL SNAPSHOT: 2015-2018 MOVING 10,000 PEOPLE OUT OF POVERTY BY 2025
3,505
fewer people living below self-sufficiency in Wayne and Holmes Counties*
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Self-sufficiency means the ability of individuals to meet their basic needs, including transportation, housing, childcare, education, medical costs, and food. Sadly over one-third of individuals living in Wayne and Holmes Counties fall below the self-sufficiency standard, measured here as those below 200% of the poverty line. While the poverty rates (the number of individuals living below 100% of poverty) are relatively low in Wayne and Holmes Counties, more of our neighbors than those in other Ohio counties and in the nation are living below self-sufficiency—these are the working poor. Some of our neighbors are working two and sometimes three jobs to make their lives work, given rising costs despite static incomes. The good news is that we are making some progress: the number of individuals below 200% of poverty is decreasing, meaning that more are self-sufficient, but our work has only begun.

At a local high school, a site coordinator witnessed an absent student rush into school just in time to meet with his mentor. The historically absent student loudly proclaimed, “I’m here!” The site coordinator explained that his mentorship had been cancelled, since the student was on the absence list. “Well, you’d better call him back and tell him to come,” the student responded. “Seeing my mentor is the reason I got out of bed today!” -Youth Development Success Story
Bill was on the verge of giving up when he found us. As a combat veteran, he was suffering from behavioral health issues that led to drug abuse and several criminal acts. Convicted, incarcerated, and released into the community with three days of medication and no home, job or support system, he came to us desperate for help. We worked with Bill to refill his hypertension medications, bridged his psych meds and counseling services for the three month gap before he could see a psychiatrist, and worked with him to find housing and a job. Bill now has a part time factory position as well as a part time fast food job and is working hard to rebuild his life. - Health & Mental Health Success Story
A man experiencing homelessness sought treatment at our facility. He then moved into a recovery house, staying for 366 days. By the time he left the recovery housing, he obtained a job with full benefits, a driver’s license, and transportation. He was able to complete all legal obligations with no new arrests or substance use. He is currently remodeling a home he purchased for his family, which includes his significant other and two small children. Today, he has maintained the same job for over a year, ensuring not only financial stability for his family, but also insurance coverage, a 401K, and profit sharing. The children are attending a local elementary school, where they have adjusted well. -Safety Net Success Story
One enrollee of our workforce program was from a local sober living treatment center. We collaborated with several agencies to assist him in successfully completing the program. He maintained 100% attendance. Another student with a past criminal history is prepared to successfully enter the workforce in a nontraditional trade after not having permanent work since 2007. She also maintained 100% attendance in her vocational training program and is now certified in her trade. We will be working on successful placement with her. -Workforce Development Success Story
