Bringing your newborn home is an exciting time, filled with joy & happiness. Undoubtedly you may have some concerns, one being how to settle your baby to sleep during the day or night.
IS YOUR FAMILY GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? Without good quality sleep as adults, we very quickly feel the effects of sleep deprivation, such as exhaustion, poor judgement, ill health and the feeling of not being able to cope. Sleep is also essential for a baby’s cognitive and physical development. Without the right amount of rest, your baby may become irritable, fretful and difficult to feed. As a result, family relationships can become frayed, which adds even more stress to the situation.
‘A good nights sleep makes for a happy family’
so you need to be in it for the long haul if needs be – and you will need to support each other through the tough times. It is a challenge, but it’s worth it! The good news is, once the right sleep plan is in place, your baby will reap the benefits of sleep... and so will you. Their mood and behaviour will quickly change, lifting the spirit of the whole family.
TIPS TO ESTABLISHING 4 PROVEN GOOD SLEEPING PATTERNS:
Sleep problems can arise for many reasons. They could be due to poor health or bad sleep associations - or simply because your child has never learnt how to self-settle.
1. KEEP IT CALM. Bedtime should be calm, lasting no
Thankfully, there are many resources out there to help new parents find a sleep plan that may work for them. The downside is, after many hours of research, you are on your own. You will still be tired, and probably won’t be feeling confident about implementing the new routine. Feeling uncomfortable with the chosen technique often leads to parents not being consistent, which will lead to failure.
(with a blackout blind in summer) and maintain the correct room temperature (16 – 20°C, ideally 18°C).
All children are unique, so the sleep training technique that you use to teach your child to self-settle, and learn to love sleep, needs to be tailored. All caregivers need to be on the same page, or your child will become confused. Sleep training isn’t a quick fix,
more than half an hour. Toys in the cot / bed should be kept to a minimum.
2. PROVIDE A GOOD SLEEPING ENVIRONMENT. Use low lighting 3. LEARN YOUR BABY’S SLEEP SIGNALS. These could include losing interest in toys & people, yawning, rubbing eyes or playing with their ears. Putting your baby to sleep when they are tired and ready to sleep just makes sense – knowing their sleep signals is key to achieving this.
4. IMPLEMENT A GOOD FEEDING & NAP ROUTINE DURING THE DAY. o not fall into the trap of thinking that less sleep D in the day will lead to your baby sleeping more at night. This is a myth – the opposite is in fact true!
Written by Diane Pawsey, The Family Sleep Consultant – Diane has over 24 years experience working with children and their families, helping to establish healthy sleeping habits. With a gentle and caring approach, she gives you the tools and confidence to implement your own, tailor-made sleep plan. www.familysleepconsultant.co.uk

If you want to do more, here are some ideas:
Create a surface using a plank of wood, supported by something from around the house – e.g. upturned plastic storage boxes (easy to clean) or old bricks. Then pop a washing up bowl on top. Ta-da!
A
t Akeley Wood Nursery the children thoroughly enjoy playing in our newly built Mud Kitchen. ‘What is a Mud Kitchen?’ I hear you cry. Well, a Mud Kitchen includes all the domestic equipment and utensils that you might find in a real kitchen, but with a slightly different ingredient - mud! Our children have access to the Mud Kitchen every day, all year round, making it an excellent outdoor resource. At Akeley, we provide protective clothing for the children to wear so they can enjoy making creative concoctions using soils, water and a range of other natural materials without the worry of getting their clothes dirty or wet. The children love making a wide range of things from magic potions to mud pies! This month the children have been out on nature walks where they have collected twigs, leaves and plants to decorate their pies and cakes. Other ingredients that are great to use are sawdust, straw, sand and bark.
HOW TO MAKE A MUD KITCHEN
We used wood, pallets and an old kitchen sink to make our mud kitchen, but you certainly don’t need to go to such lengths. The purpose of the mud kitchen is to enable fun and educational play, and something far simpler could do the job. Children are very imaginative – some pans, bowls and spoons next to a patch of mud would make a great start!
An old or under-used toy kitchen could make the move to the garden – as long as you don’t mind it getting messy!
3 4 5
Bring your wheelbarrow out into the garden and fill it with soil and water.
An old coffee table or some shelves picked up at the charity shop or car boot sale would make a great surface, with storage space for kitchen utensils. Use some simple hand-screw hooks from a DIY shop to make hanging places for utensils and pans on the kitchen or on a nearby fence.
T IPS:
• S upply plenty of bowls, pots, jugs and other (safe) kitchen tools for the children to play with. The bowls will allow them to collect lots of different ingredients for their concoctions and the other tools will give them more options when ‘cooking’.
• P ut your mud kitchen in or next to a flowerbed
if possible – for easy access to mud and to help contain the mess!
• T ry to put the kitchen near an outside tap or hose, both to give the children independence in their play, and to make it easier for you to clean up.
•O ld placemats, cut into circles, make perfect rings for the hob of the cooker.
•D ress your child in old clothes or waterproofs – no explanation needed!

Positional Plagiocephaly
WHAT IS IT?
In broad terms Positional Plagiocephaly or ‘Flat head syndrome’ as it is commonly called, is a condition characterised by a flattening on one side of the back of the head. It may also involve bulging of the forehead, fullness of the cheek and ear misalignment on the same side as the flattening. There are three ‘typical’ different head shapes:
Plagiocephaly
Brachycephaly
Dolichocephaly
Positional Plagiocephaly occurs after birth. Two main causes are prematurity (and therefore time spent supine in neo-natal unit) and torticollis, which is a medical condition and requires physiotherapy to loosen neck muscles. But the primary cause is an unfortunate result of the Backs To Sleep campaign
introduced in the early 1990s to help prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). There seems to be a direct statistical link because of the measured increase in the incidence of Plagiocephaly after the campaign’s introduction. However because of the number of lives that have been saved by the Backs to Sleep campaign there is no suggestion that parents should ignore this advice. Prevention Until 4-5 months of age, repositioning and tummy time techniques may be enough to encourage either natural correction of head shape or prevention of the development of the condition. At night time, alternate the end of the cot where the baby lays its head. Always turn the baby’s head so that it does not lie on the flattened side. Treatment If repositioning techniques have not brought about sufficient improvement, then Cranial Remoulding Therapy is an option. The bands or helmets work by applying a gentle constant pressure over the areas of the baby’s skull that are most prominent, while allowing unrestricted growth over the flattened areas.
Written by The London Orthotic Consultancy – The London Orthotic Consultancy has just opened a clinic at the Chris Moody Centre in Moulton, 5 miles from Northampton. If you are concerned about the shape of your baby’s head you can make a FREE initial appointment by ringing 020 8974 9989. www.LondonOrthotics.co.uk

Are you worried about the shape of your baby’s head? After birth some babies develop flattening on one side of the back of their heads. This is a condition called Positional Plagiocephaly or ‘Flat head syndrome’. If there is no natural improvement by the age of 4/5 months you might want to seek advice. The London Orthotic Consultancy (LOC) offers a FREE initial consultancy at its Northampton clinic during which your baby’s head shape will be assessed and measured and treatment options discussed. The first option is normally repositioning but if this does not work the LOCband cranial remoulding therapy will produce measurable improvements to head shape.

Recycling at Christmas... At Christmas we produce more rubbish than at any other time of the year; enough to fill 400,000 double decker buses! Some cannot be avoided but the majority can be reduced, recycled or reused. It is easy to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce. Start by trying to buy toys and gifts that aren’t encased in lots of packaging. Ditch the plastic bags and get loose Christmas vegetables too. Buy recycled cards and wrapping paper and do your bit to close the loop by recycling them again afterwards. And if it’s battery-powered, buy some rechargeable batteries! When it comes to food, it is easy to over-buy so consider planning out what you need in advance. It is a great way to prevent waste and panic buying, especially when it comes to feeding the family. Remember to check with your local council to see if your collection schedule has changed. If you have a garden waste collection, you can put out your real Christmas tree too. Trees can also be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).

Controversy Corner
How Slow Are Your Toys?
By Sally J. Hall ith Christmas just round the corner, parents around the world are starting to buy toys for their children. We invited parenting author and judge of the Slow Toy Awards, Sally J. Hall, to share with us why she believes we should be buying traditional, low-tech toys for our children this year. These days, it’s all about speed. Faster Broadband, quicker access to the motorway, London to Birmingham in under an hour. That’s all well and good if speed is important to you – which it sometimes is, especially in business and if you need to be in a different place quickly. But somewhere in this faster, bigger, better world, it’s easy to feel somehow that we are losing something. When I travel, for example, I like to feel that I have actually gone somewhere. Last year my family and I travelled by train to the southern tip of Italy. It took us the best part of three days but we experienced far more than we would have done with a two hour flight and the stress of the departures lounge: watching the landscape change as we crossed France from plains to rolling hills; the chocolate box chalets and stunning mountain passes of Switzerland; and the villages and towns of Italy changing in colour and character as we chugged south were things we all savoured. This is one of the reasons I was delighted to be asked to judge the Slow Toy Awards this year, because this movement is one that fits with my own parenting and environmental ethos and also celebrates – almost inadvertently - some of the best and most traditional toys that have been found in the toy boxes of Europe for many generations.
How many of us were fascinated as children by Grandma’s china doll, by an old fashioned bear with moveable legs and shiny black eyes, by a knitted toy or a set of wooden blocks with letters and pictures on them? Toys in the past were few and far between because most families could not afford many. They were played with only on special occasions and were treasured and passed on from one family member to another. With the advent of cheap metal during the pre-war years and of plastics and electronics after, parents were now able to afford to buy many more toys. Most houses will have boxes of plastic figures and electronic games - we are even given toys free with cereals and fast food meals. Does this proliferation breed contempt? I have noticed that my son, now in his teens and moving on to big boys’ toys, used to covet those action figures from film and TV series. He would nag for them or save his pocket money but as each craze passed, the toys would be forgotten and left in a box, to be taken to the charity shop or passed to another child who would value them as little as it seemed he did. My children were lucky enough to have toys they inherited. When I was small, my father spent evenings and weekends creating a farm for the four of us to play with. Small wooden animals including cows, sheep and horses could be arranged around the pond on the farmyard, created from plaster of Paris, and we could put the farmer and his family inside the small plywood farmhouse. It had all been painted and thought through with care – and it is still there at my parents’ house, waiting for the next generation to play with it.

Controversy Corner
A bout The Slow To y Movement The Slow Toy Movement was launched in 2011 by Thierry Bourret, marking the beginning of an exciting cultural movement for the toy industry. Much like Carlo Petrini’s Slow Food Movement that defended good food and the enjoyment of eating, this campaign aims to promote traditional toys that inspire the child’s mind and encourage real play – over toys that are run by batteries and have flashing lights. The disappearance of the educational abacus, the beautifully crafted wooden toy and the much loved dolls house is very much the issue at the heart of this campaign. The movement believes that children should never be in a race to talk or walk first, that development is not a competition and should be left to follow its own pace. www.slowtoymovement.com Toys that do not rely on lights, sounds and batteries are sometimes thought of as ‘boring’ or ‘simple.’ It’s a cliché but how many times have you seen a small child have as much fun with a box as with the present it had contained? We have all marveled at the imagination going on in that tiny brain to turn simple cardboard into a plane, a boat or a car – and this is the point. There’s a bit of a backlash against toys made from good old-fashioned materials like wood and fabric and are given the disparaging epithet of ‘worthy’ but they don’t have to be made from free range hemp to be ethical – nor to engage a child’s imagination. Choosing toys that do not rely on bangs and beeps and whistles is not a ‘second best’ choice, nor something you should feel ashamed of, even though the big, shiny plastic item that plays 15 nursery rhymes and flashes lights might at first glance look more appealing. If you buy a set of wooden bricks for your kids, or those of a friend, you are giving them something that is far more than the sum of its parts. Any set of blocks can be built up and bashed down in a hundred ways. They create a fort, a road, a garden wall and a child can learn about colours, patterns, what pictures and letters mean and how gravity and energy works. A simple doll will become a playmate and a child can imbue it with a huge range of emotions, likes and dislikes. Dominoes can be built up and knocked down and arranged in shapes and patterns. A playset that turns a child into a doctor, vet, fireman or builder will create a world full of active imagination and role-play and help them make sense of that strange world adults inhabit when they go out to work. So if all this is true, why do so many parents turn to electronic devices, game machines and mobile apps that keep their child amused for seemingly much

The
longer than these old fashioned toys? It’s true that they capture the imagination and a child will become engrossed. But this engagement is to the exclusion of the world around them, rather than helping them live in it. How often have you played an online game, only to find out that suddenly an hour has passed? But that hour has been spent engaging with your computer, not your family, and though many of us feel the need to switch ‘real life’ off sometimes, I don’t think any of us would agree that this was worth more or was more fulfilling than, say, a night out with friends, a family barbecue or a Sunday lunch spent around the table with loved ones. That’s not to say, in an Orwellian way, that all technology is bad. Kids can learn a lot from playing with smartphones and tablets and sometimes – on long journeys as I know all too well – it can be the only way to placate them. But if that is at the expense of being able to interact with other children and adults, it’s a high price to pay. So use technology wisely and not too often, be resigned to the fact that children need stimulation and get bored easily (though sometimes they will amaze you at how long they can continue to do a single activity, over and over) and embrace fewer, better made toys that will last – and perhaps your children will pass them on to theirs.
Sally J. Hall is one of the judges of the Slow Toy Awards, which champions toys and games that rely on enduring play value, not lights, sounds and batteries. She is Editor of B Baby Magazine (www.bbabymagazine.co.uk) and author of Eco Baby, A Guide To Green Parenting. She is also Editor of The Bounty Product Guide.

Mums
Just 2 years old, Disco Babies is already a success story. Sadie O’Boyle shares how it happened.
Why did you decide to work for yourself?
How do you juggle work and being mum?
Even when I was young I dreamed of having my own dance school. When my eldest son, Spencer, was born I was working in a corporate company and I found myself doing the nursery run at 6.30pm every night. I knew I had to make a change. A dance school was my first choice – Spencer seemed to adore bopping to pop music and this inspired my whole business theme for Disco Babies.
Juggling being a mum and a business owner can sometimes be tricky and it has taken some trial and error to get the right balance!
How did you decide what to do? Dance has been my life and when I realised how much my son loved dancing at such a young age, it just fuelled my passion to start dance classes. From my own experience as a mum, I saw a gap in the market to create a dance class for toddlers which was completely different to the usual nursery rhyme circuit.
I have taught myself to be organised and not try to do too many things at once - making lists is my saviour! If it’s not written down it doesn’t happen. I try and make separate time for my kids and I work in the evenings when they are in bed. The boys sometimes come along to my dance classes and they love it! I have a great support network with my husband, mum and family who all help me out and are very supportive.

What do you like about self-employed? I love being self-employed. The best thing is choosing the times I work - I’m able to be at the school gate at pick up time and can fit my work around my children. I feel very lucky. I love the brand that I have created and I love seeing the fun that children have in my classes - it is hugely rewarding!
What are the worst bits about it? I suppose the worst bits about being self-employed are that sometimes I work late in the evening and I do find it really hard to turn my phone off!
What advice would you give to parents starting out in business? If you have a dream - go for it. Make sure that you are passionate about your product or service. Be prepared to make mistakes – and learn from them when they happen. Give yourself time to build your business, be flexible and don’t give up when it gets tough!
What are your plans for Disco Babies? After the huge success we’ve had in Milton Keynes, I have put together a franchise programme to allow Disco Babies to grow to other areas. It’s designed to work for mums (as it did for me) so they can run a successful business and still be there for their kids. It essentially gives a step by step guide to setting up the business, with full support and training from me. We already have franchisees in Bristol and Preston so it’s all very exciting!

Come along to GymBugs, and along with our qualified pre-school coaches, you can assist your child to explore wonderful and exciting equipment such as ladders, beams and climbing apparatus whilst beginning to learn the basic skills of gymnastics. For the older children, there are more structured classes where they are taken around the apparatus by the coaches in small groups and slightly more difficult gymnastics skills are practiced.
