WHY WE HAVE CHOSEN

Children with Cancer UK

In the UK, cancer is the most common cause of death in children aged 1 – 14 years – accounting for about 20% of deaths in this age group. Children’s cancers are different to adult and even teenage cancers. Most cancer research is done on adult cancers, which means research into children’s cancers is progressing much slower. The incidence of children’s cancer is increasing: 1,600 children aged 1 – 14 years are diagnosed with cancer every year. That’s 4 or 5 every day.

FIGHTING

The main treatments that are effective against cancer, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are particularly harmful to children. Even if the cancer is successfully treated, the child may go on to suffer for the rest of their lives. Different treatments for children need to be developed.

Childhood Cancer

One of our New Year resolutions for 2015 was to partner Toddle About with a children’s charity to help raise awareness and some much needed funds for a good cause. And after a lot of thought and consideration, we are pleased to announce that we will be supporting Children with Cancer UK.

Children with Cancer UK dedicates all its resources specifically to children’s cancers – researching them to find cures and supporting families that are affected. More research needs to be done. We want to help make that happen.

Throughout the year, we will be thinking up some fun ways to raise some money for Children with Cancer UK – so watch this space! For starters, we hope you will enter our special charity competition below.

WHAT IS YOUR BABY THINKING?

Sometimes it is obvious. The ‘hungry cry’ or the ‘tired cry’: we can often recognise the meaning behind the noise. But a baby who signs can tell you what they need, how they feel and what they have seen, reducing frustration for you both and enhancing their speech development. Baby signing is defined as ‘teaching a hearing baby to communicate before they can talk, using sign language’. This window into a baby’s thoughts and feelings was, for me, the most fascinating aspect of baby signing. My toddler signed quite clearly at 15 months that she wanted ‘milk’ instead of the water she had been given. She could ask me ‘where?’ ‘music?’ when the radio went off. At 18 months, we were able to hold the following two-way conversation, with me signing and speaking, Daisy signing:

Mummy: What’s the matter? > Daisy: (help) Mummy: Help with what? > Daisy: (train) Mummy: Which one? > Daisy: (blue) This kind of exchange is incredibly enriching for a baby’s relationships and can reduce the frustration babies and toddlers can experience before they can talk. Signing gives them confidence and self-esteem; seeing the delight on your baby’s face when you understand their sign is a wonderful moment. Another mother reported her 18-month-old girl pointing at the traffic and signing ‘bus’, ‘hat’ and ‘gone’.

She realised that her toddler was telling her they had left her hat on the bus! This shows how signing babies and toddlers can communicate complex ideas long before their speech reaches this level of sophistication. The other benefits of baby signing are well documented. Speech and language experts have long recognised that using simple signing for the most important words babies learn, will encourage early speech development. In the early years of life, babies’ brains are ‘wiring’ themselves through their experiences. The visual component of sign language increases brain activity and stimulates development of connections between brain cells. So the signs (visual) and words (spoken) used together are a richer base for a baby’s developing brain than words alone.

WHERE TO START Baby signing is easy and fun to do, and the more you practise, the more likely your child is to adopt signing readily. Babies naturally use gestures to help themselves be understood; think of clapping hands or waving goodbye. You can begin to sign at any time with your baby from 6 weeks with the basic signs that can be repeated many times during the day, such as ‘milk’, ‘more’ and ‘all gone’. Keep the signing you use age and development appropriate, and build on your signing by introducing signs for things that interest your baby, be they ducks or aeroplanes! If you follow your baby’s interests, they will be motivated and keen to learn the signs for themselves.

So it is perhaps not surprising that many children struggle at bedtime - but what should parents do? I advise parents to think about the daytime before we look at bedtimes. It’s not that children want our attention, it’s that they need it. I ask parents to establish a regular time each day when they sit and play with their child for ten minutes. There should be no interruptions, ideally when baby is asleep. This reassures the child that they are still there for them. If children know they are going to get this time every day, they feel less anxious at other times and are less likely to feel insecure. I also recommend involving the child in helping to look after the baby wherever possible, but in a fun way, not with responsibilities.

New Baby, New Challenges It’s curious how I often get a cluster of families coming to my clinic at about the same time who are experiencing similar difficulties. In the last couple of months I have seen several parents who have had a new baby and are struggling with how this affects their older child – particularly in relation to sleep issues. All have found that bedtime settling routines have become much longer and at times very demanding. At the point of the parent leaving the room, some children have become very teary and clingy, others very cross and destructive. Typically in situations like these, the older child is displaying anxiety around the changes that come along with a new baby. Not only do they have a new person to get to know and incorporate into their family, but there are changes in their parents too. Both parents are likely to be tired and a little more on edge than usual, whilst they adjust to having more demands placed on them, and they will naturally have less time for their older child than before.

Once the child is reassured that their parents are still available to them, and they accept the baby into the family, then we can think about bedtimes. I don’t mind whether parents want a family bed or the child in their own room; a 15-minute bedtime routine or a 90-minute routine. What I want is for the parent to feel happy and confident with their choice. I suggest a clear ‘getting ready for bed’ routine, a chat, a story, a kiss and ‘goodnight’. The expectation is then that the child stays in their room. If they leave, then they should be calmly and silently taken back – maybe many times initially. Usually just a few days of this is sufficient for them to get the message. As difficult as it can be, it is really important to be consistent. Hopefully the result is a happy, rested child, secure in their relationship with all of their family members, but if anyone needs extra support with issues like this, they can speak to their GP, health visitor, children’s centre or a specialist. This is a simple, but fantastic book. Each double page asks the reader a question, such as, “If you could go anywhere, where would you go?” and “What kind of home would you choose?” Then it gives dozens of pictures that your child can choose from. It’s a wonderfully interactive way for children to learn about the world around them and the different things that are out there - and our children loved it.

When we drew up this list, it didn’t surprise me – it includes many of my favourites and, I’m sure, many of yours too. What really caught my interest however wasn’t the Top 10, it was the other end of the list - the titles that I’d never heard of, that only one person was recommending. They peaked my interest… so I bought a few of them! Below are my 3 favourites from the ‘bottom’ of the list:

Hermelin is a delightful story about helping others, writing notes, and finding friendship. I suppose it’s also about judging people (or mice) as individuals, and not on preconceived stereotypes. It’s also a jolly good yarn – a fun introduction to the mystery genre for toddlers! Our children really got into this book and had fun guessing the answer to each mystery before Hermelin revealed the answer.

Who’s In The Loo BY JEANNE WILLIS & ADRIAN REYNOLDS

This story made me smile. Whilst waiting in the queue for the toilet, two children imagine who on Earth it could be that is taking so long. The book introduces the reader a variety of animals (educational) doing a variety of things in the toilet (funny) until they finally find out who is in the loo… But I won’t spoil the ending for you – you’ll have to find out for yourself!

One in five children in the UK suffers from eczema, a condition that causes itchy inflammation of the skin. Are PushChairs Harming our Babies?

Near the top of any new parent’s ‘To Buy’ list is a pushchair. It’s an essential, must-have purchase and we regularly spend hundreds of pounds when we buy them. So it might come as a surprise that there are a growing number of people for whom a buggy is considered not just a non-essential item, but also a danger to our children’s healthy development. We invited Aloma Chandiram, a Babywearing Consultant, to share why she believes we should be scratching the pushchair off our lists...

Do you like a cuddle? That closeness, the smell of the person you love - feeling them warm and comforting against you? Babywearing is the practice of carrying your baby in a sling, wrapped closely to your body, and it has many benefits - having long, gorgeous cuddles with my baby is one reason I’m a big advocate.

quite a bumpy and unsettling ride! Neither of us were enjoying the experience and she was so far away from me that I didn’t feel the connection that I had hoped for. We persisted, but half of our walks entailed her screaming so much that she ended up in my arms as I pushed an empty pushchair home.

Babywearing isn’t a new thing - it started thousands of years ago. Back when life was a little harder, and having a healthy birth was more of a distraction from the daily routine of surviving than a life changing moment, mothers would strap their baby to their bodies and get on with their daily lives.

The decision to buy a pre-loved high street baby carrier was a logical progression for me. And what a reckoning moment it was - my fractious, clingy baby was settled; sleeping and content for hours. It wasn’t the most comfortable for me and later in my babywearing journey I found more suitable options, but the price tag on this compared to my pushchair was vastly cheaper and the effects on my child were, well, priceless.

But that was a long time ago and somewhere along the way to this modern era, the use of slings just ... disappeared, to be replaced by that staple of modern baby equipment: the pushchair. And they come in so many forms! Parent-facing, forward-facing, all terrain, travel system, infant seat, carry cot - the buying decision can be quite an experience. When we were expecting our first child, my husband and I bought what seemed like the most popular (and hence, we thought, the best) pushchair. I was so excited! We set it all up before our daughter arrived and I kept dreaming about pushing my gorgeous newborn around the neighbourhood and shops. When she arrived, I put her into the carrycot and off we set for our first walk. She was just a day or so old, and she was rolled from side to side - it seemed like

There are many people who believe or worry that holding their baby close in a carrier or sling for a long time will cause them to be overly clingy. I would argue that clinginess comes and goes with all children and there’s nothing wrong with bringing your baby close and letting them know that their carer is there to protect and feed them – but I certainly wouldn’t object to people questioning my beliefs. It’s natural to question something like babywearing because it’s different from the norm - but we rarely stop to question whether using a buggy is the right thing to do because it is such an ingrained part of our parenting culture. But it is a question that many infant and child specialists have been asking for some time, and their conclusions certainly make interesting reading!

Controversy Corner Dr. M. Suzanne Zeedyk carried out research in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust on the impact of buggy orientation on parent-infant interaction and infant stress (Nov. 2008). Her findings led her to conclude that for a baby, the experience of being in a buggy was “more isolated than many adults realise – and may be more emotionally impoverished than is good for children’s development”. In particular, she was concerned with the lack of interaction between baby and parent caused by away-facing buggies, “which produced the highest rate of parent and child silence”. She suggested that this could have a negative impact on the child’s speech and vocabulary development, and that not being able to see their parents’ facial and body signals whilst out and about might inhibit their social and emotional understanding of the world around them. Elizabeth Antunovic wrote a thorough and wellresearched analysis of the arguments surrounding strollers, baby carriers and infant stress. She sites evidence that suggests babies have naturally adapted to being carried upright and oriented towards their mothers, and that lying flat on their back or sat up in car seats and strollers is restrictive to their movement and bad for their spinal development. She advocates the use of baby carriers, but stresses the importance of leg support and baby facing the mother. Dr Sean Brotherson, Family Science Specialist, wrote the paper “Keys to enhancing brain development in young children” (2005). He endorses the importance of being close to your child: “Touch is a fundamental and important source of security to a child. If you deprive an infant of touch, the body and brain will stop growing in a healthy manner. Physical stroking helps premature babies gain weight more quickly and helps healthy babies digest food better. Babies cry less when they are held and carried regularly. Touch is an infant’s life line to security, attachment and reassurance.”

No Hands! Babywearing is ‘hands free’ - when our

second child came along, I could not be more thankful for this gift. It made me feel like wonderwoman, making my newborn feel content whilst happily holding hands and playing with my active toddler.

Family cuddles. Babywearing gives dads, grandparents and everyone else the chance to enjoy some long and lovely cuddles with your baby and to develop a strong bond with the new addition to the family. It’s convenient. No more bruised knees from

lugging that car seat around – and your wrap takes up less space too when it isn’t needed.

Breastfeeding. Having your baby so close

allows you to feed on demand, which helps with initial milk supply.

Exercise/Physiology. Babywearing helps work out your core muscles without putting unnecessary strain on them! Communication. Being so close I can listen to my baby and see their cues quicker than if they were in a pushchair. We can talk away happily and view the world together as we walk along. Its fun! It really is. Sharing a giggle, or listening to your toddler singing away in your ear whilst on your back is a joy.

They are economical. OK, there are some wraps and carriers out there that can be pretty pricey but, overall, slings are very economical and very modestly priced compared to pushchairs.

Heuristic Play At Akeley Wood Nursery our Ladybird & Caterpillar children really look forward to their weekly heuristic play sessions which take place in a small group with their key person. ‘Heuristic’ means helping to find out or discover!

What is Heuristic Play?

Heuristic play is a structured opportunity for children to freely investigate and experiment with a selection of natural resources and everyday objects. At Akeley Wood, as soon as our nursery children become mobile and can independently explore we provide these sessions to encourage children to engage in open-ended, sensory play which helps strengthen their cognitive development. The heuristic play sessions allow staff to observe the children in a quiet, child led environment. Nursery Staff sit quietly nearby and are there for reassurance while children play freely without adult intervention. A great example of heuristic play is the Treasure Basket – essentially, this is just a (safe) container, with a variety of different objects inside for the child to play with. Treasure Baskets give babies the chance to learn through all their senses - it is wonderful to watch the toddlers as they experiment, bashing objects together to create ‘cause and effect’, smelling and touching new materials and creating imaginary toys from feathers, wicker balls and cardboard tubes.

Why not try making your own Heuristic Treasure Basket at home? Some ideal items to include in your basket are:

•Woollen pompoms •Range of boxes that will slot inside each other •Tubes which will slide inside each other

(inside of foil tubes, kitchen rolls, cling films etc.)

•Strips of materials with different textures •Items with slots or holes (spatulas, rings) •Jar tops, shells & corks •Hair rollers of different sizes •Variety of tins (with safe tops) such as golden syrup tins, biscuit tins

Now sit back and watch your toddler become involved in some spontaneous exploratory play!

Things ALL Parents Should About Vitamin D e in the UK we we are are seeing an increase increase in Vitamin Here was thought thought to t be a ccondition D deficiency,, which was of the pre-war years. A recent study by The Vitamin D Mission has shown that the average British child is only getting 27% of the Vitamin D they need for healthy development.

Why Does It Matter?

Vitamin D is important because it helps the body to absorb Calcium, which in turn promotes bone growth and dental health. A deficiency of Vitamin D can cause poor growth in babies and children, as well as problems with immunity, dental problems and rickets - and under 5s are among the most at risk of low levels of Vitamin D.

How To Safely Get More Vitamin D

Our best source of Vitamin D is when our skin is exposed to sunlight - about 90% of our Vitamin D is made in the skin with the help of sunlight. The larger the area of skin that is exposed, the more Vitamin D is likely to be produced. Babies build up a store of Vitamin D whilst in the womb, taking it from the mother.

There are also some foods that naturally contain Vitamin D, such as pilchards, sardines, salmon, eggs and fortified breakfast cereals. Making these a regular part of your diet will help increase Vitamin D levels.

When You May Need Supplements

Unfortunately, getting your children out in the sunlight during the winter months will have very little effect on their Vitamin D levels, if any, and diet will never be able to provide them with all the Vitamin D they need… so supplements may well be necessary. Here are the guidelines: Children from the age of 6 months to 5 years (including breastfed babies) should take a daily a vitamin D supplement; they do not require vitamin supplements if they are having more than 500ml formula milk, as the milk is fortified with vitamins. All pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should take a Vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms daily.

The best time of day for making Vitamin D in the UK is from 11am – 3pm in the months from April – October; about 10 – 15 minutes a day without sunscreen and not allowing your skin become red or sunburnt, (except for babies under 6 months who should never be exposed to direct sunlight without sun protection).

Breastfed babies from age of 1 month may also require supplements if their mother hasn’t taken Vitamin D during pregnancy. The Vitamin D Mission have developed an online test allowing you to calculate whether your child’s vitamin D intake is sufficient. You can find it at www.vitamindmission.co.uk.

Come along to GymBugs, and along with our qualified pre-school coaches, you can assist your child to explore wonderful and exciting equipment such as ladders, beams and climbing apparatus whilst beginning to learn the basic skills of gymnastics. For the older children, there are more structured classes where they are taken around the apparatus by the coaches in small groups and slightly more difficult gymnastics skills are practiced. There will also be a chance in this lesson to partake in the British Gymnastics award schemes.
