Hello &
welcome
to the New Year edition of Toddle About!
It’s a cliché, but it definitely feels as though time is passing faster than ever. How is it 2015 already?! Time to start acting on those New Year Resolutions… or perhaps they can wait for another week. Our little ones won’t wait a week however (ours struggle to wait a minute, truth be told), so they still need plenty of entertaining – and we hope this edition will help!

< Vega is one of the many children being helped by Children with Cancer UK. Her story is emotional – you can read it at www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk/Blog/vega
WHY WE HAVE CHOSEN
Children with Cancer UK
In the UK, cancer is the most common cause of death in children aged 1 – 14 years – accounting for about 20% of deaths in this age group. Children’s cancers are different to adult and even teenage cancers. Most cancer research is done on adult cancers, which means research into children’s cancers is progressing much slower. The incidence of children’s cancer is increasing: 1,600 children aged 1 – 14 years are diagnosed with cancer every year. That’s 4 or 5 every day.
FIGHTING
The main treatments that are effective against cancer, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are particularly harmful to children. Even if the cancer is successfully treated, the child may go on to suffer for the rest of their lives. Different treatments for children need to be developed.
Childhood Cancer
One of our New Year resolutions for 2015 was to partner Toddle About with a children’s charity to help raise awareness and some much needed funds for a good cause. And after a lot of thought and consideration, we are pleased to announce that we will be supporting Children with Cancer UK.
Children with Cancer UK dedicates all its resources specifically to children’s cancers – researching them to find cures and supporting families that are affected. More research needs to be done. We want to help make that happen.
Throughout the year, we will be thinking up some fun ways to raise some money for Children with Cancer UK – so watch this space! For starters, we hope you will enter our special charity competition below.
ENTER OUR CHARITY PRIZE DRAW

WHAT IS YOUR BABY THINKING?
By Melissa Dryden
ca k
Sometimes it is obvious. The ‘hungry cry’ or the ‘tired cry’: we can often recognise the meaning behind the noise. But a baby who signs can tell you what they need, how they feel and what they have seen, reducing frustration for you both and enhancing their speech development. Baby signing is defined as ‘teaching a hearing baby to communicate before they can talk, using sign language’. This window into a baby’s thoughts and feelings was, for me, the most fascinating aspect of baby signing. My toddler signed quite clearly at 15 months that she wanted ‘milk’ instead of the water she had been given. She could ask me ‘where?’ ‘music?’ when the radio went off. At 18 months, we were able to hold the following two-way conversation, with me signing and speaking, Daisy signing:
Mummy: What’s the matter? > Daisy: (help) Mummy: Help with what? > Daisy: (train) Mummy: Which one? > Daisy: (blue) This kind of exchange is incredibly enriching for a baby’s relationships and can reduce the frustration babies and toddlers can experience before they can talk. Signing gives them confidence and self-esteem; seeing the delight on your baby’s face when you understand their sign is a wonderful moment. Another mother reported her 18-month-old girl pointing at the traffic and signing ‘bus’, ‘hat’ and ‘gone’.

HOW BABY SIGNING HELPS THEM COMMUNICATE BEFORE SPEECH
lis t

She realised that her toddler was telling her they had left her hat on the bus! This shows how signing babies and toddlers can communicate complex ideas long before their speech reaches this level of sophistication. The other benefits of baby signing are well documented. Speech and language experts have long recognised that using simple signing for the most important words babies learn, will encourage early speech development. In the early years of life, babies’ brains are ‘wiring’ themselves through their experiences. The visual component of sign language increases brain activity and stimulates development of connections between brain cells. So the signs (visual) and words (spoken) used together are a richer base for a baby’s developing brain than words alone.
WHERE TO START Baby signing is easy and fun to do, and the more you practise, the more likely your child is to adopt signing readily. Babies naturally use gestures to help themselves be understood; think of clapping hands or waving goodbye. You can begin to sign at any time with your baby from 6 weeks with the basic signs that can be repeated many times during the day, such as ‘milk’, ‘more’ and ‘all gone’. Keep the signing you use age and development appropriate, and build on your signing by introducing signs for things that interest your baby, be they ducks or aeroplanes! If you follow your baby’s interests, they will be motivated and keen to learn the signs for themselves.
Melissa Dryden teaches for Sing and Sign. The programme has taught tens of thousands of parents across the UK to sign with their babies over the last 14 years. Classes are fun and informal and a great chance to meet like-minded parents - to find local classes, visit www.singandsign.com. See advert on P.11 for teachers in Oxfordshire.

My Part-time Job That Gave Me a BMW Mini By Kirstie Darnell
k
you
When you’re on maternity leave every penny counts, so when we discovered we could save over £700 on our utilities by bundling them all together on one monthly bill, we didn’t hesitate. The team at Utility Warehouse took care of everything and became our phone, broadband, gas, electricity AND mobile phone supplier – and gave us up to £200 to get us out of existing contracts. The icing on the cake for us was that we could also get more money off our bills every time we went shopping at the likes of Sainsburys, M&S, Mothercare, Boots, Toys R Us, Argos and eBay plus 2000+ more – places we already shop. This soon mounts up and we save an EXTRA £30-50 every month with their cashback scheme. One thing led to another and we quickly decided to become distributors for Utility Warehouse ourselves – something anyone can do – and my husband Simon and I have now been the local representatives for
over a year. It’s a fantastic business that fits into the nooks and crannies of our day. A ten-minute conversation here, a few phone calls there and hand out a few cards. We literally work about five hours a week and we now earn about £300 every month – for life! An extra £300 a month makes a big difference – and it’s growing every month. I really can’t recommend Utility Warehouse enough – they have saved us so much on our bills, but more importantly have provided us with a part-time business that looks set to pay for our retirement. They can do the same for you. You don’t need any experience and can earn £500 in your first month and every month, plus bonuses and incentives along the way. Just one year in, we’ve already qualified for a free holiday and a free BMW Mini! We are well on our way to a better financial future. Do you want to join us? If you would like to find out more about switching to Utility Warehouse, or becoming a distributor yourself, please contact Kirstie on 07967 399449.

MY NEW YEARS RESOLUTION:
TO
on our health. Love actually helps to reduce our stress levels! What a wonderful thing to cultivate when our lives are so busy and hectic and full of anxiety.
LOVE HEALS
When we love ourselves we direct our gaze toward the part of our being that is beautiful and we forgive ourselves for our imperfections. Instead of focusing on the negative, we pay attention to the positive and in doing so our strengths and qualities are allowed to flourish and expand. As this process unfolds, healing takes place and our perception of ourselves changes for the better.
LOVE ENERGISES
With Christmas just over, many of us will be making practical, tangible New Years’ resolutions to lose weight, learn a new skill or change jobs. These kinds of resolutions are great and I have made many myself, but if you’re serious about making your life even better in 2015, I’d like to encourage you to consider making a slightly less conventional resolution… For some, Christmas is a joyous time of celebration and coming together with family and loved ones. For others it can be lonely and even painful. But perhaps all could agree that it reminds us of one truth: the indispensability of love. Our need to love, to be loved and feel loved is perhaps our greatest. Most of us, understandably, don’t ever stop to think about the impact love has on our lives – fewer would think about actively practising loving more. It’s even a bit taboo to talk about it. A profound and fundamental aspect of my work as a therapist is to help my clients love and accept themselves as they are first in order for positive change to occur. I find it fascinating to witness the magic that happens when people truly begin to love themselves.
THE POWER OF LOVE
LOVE NOURISHES AND GIVES SERENITY
When we are loved, we feel a deep sense of wellbeing. Wisdom tells us that love is the antidote to fear. Research has even shown that love and connection have a direct and significant beneficial impact
Think about a time when you were doing something you absolutely love – a really fun activity, or simply spending quality time with the people you love - or even just enjoying a loving cuddle with your little one. If you remember how that felt, I’m going guess that you came away with a smile on your face, feeling great. It gave you energy. The opposite is also true – doing something you really don’t enjoy sucks the energy out of you. I’m sure you can think of an example when that happened too! Simply doing more of the things you love is one way to practise loving more. And when you feel great, that has a positive impact on the people around you. So it’s good for everyone!
SO WHAT IF YOU MADE LOVE YOUR PRIORITY IN 2015?
Learning to love is a lifelong endeavour but as Buddha said “with dripping drops of water, the water jug is filled.” I wonder how more drops of love would change your life…
2015! Y P P HA

Bringing your newborn home is an exciting time, filled with joy & happiness. Undoubtedly you may have some concerns, one being how to settle your baby to sleep during the day or night.
IS YOUR FAMILY GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? Without good quality sleep as adults, we very quickly feel the effects of sleep deprivation, such as exhaustion, poor judgement, ill health and the feeling of not being able to cope. Sleep is also essential for a baby’s cognitive and physical development. Without the right amount of rest, your baby may become irritable, fretful and difficult to feed. As a result, family relationships can become frayed, which adds even more stress to the situation.
‘A good night’s sleep makes for a happy family’
so you need to be in it for the long haul if needs be – and you will need to support each other through the tough times. It is a challenge, but it’s worth it! The good news is, once the right sleep plan is in place, your baby will reap the benefits of sleep... and so will you. Their mood and behaviour will quickly change, lifting the spirit of the whole family.
TIPS TO ESTABLISHING GOOD SLEEPING PATTERNS: 4 PROVEN
Sleep problems can arise for many reasons. They could be due to poor health or bad sleep associations - or simply because your child has never learnt how to self-settle.
1. KEEP IT CALM. Bedtime should be calm, lasting no more than half an hour. Toys in the cot / bed should be kept to a minimum.
Thankfully, there are many resources out there to help new parents find a sleep plan that may work for them. The downside is, after many hours of research, you are on your own. You will still be tired, and probably won’t be feeling confident about implementing the new routine. Feeling uncomfortable with the chosen technique often leads to parents not being consistent, which will lead to failure.
(with a blackout blind in summer) and maintain the correct room temperature (16 – 20°C, ideally 18°C).
All children are unique, so the sleep training technique that you use to teach your child to self-settle, and learn to love sleep, needs to be tailored. All caregivers need to be on the same page, or your child will become confused. Sleep training isn’t a quick fix,
2. PROVIDE A GOOD SLEEPING ENVIRONMENT. Use low lighting 3. LEARN YOUR BABY’S SLEEP SIGNALS. These could include losing interest in toys & people, yawning, rubbing eyes or playing with their ears. Putting your baby to sleep when they are tired and ready to sleep just makes sense – knowing their sleep signals is key to achieving this. 4. IMPLEMENT A GOOD FEEDING & NAP ROUTINE DURING THE DAY. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that less sleep in the day will lead to your baby sleeping more at night. This is a myth – the opposite is in fact true!

One in five children in the UK suffers from eczema, a condition that causes itchy inflammation of the skin. Symptoms are worsened during a flare-up and the skin can become extremely irritated, hot, scaly, swollen and blistered. Meet 18-month old Maani Hussain; he has been having regular treatment at The Salt Cave in Milton Keynes since he was 6 months old to treat his eczema. His parents first discovered Salt Therapy while researching about salt baths, which was recommended to them by their homeopathic consultant. Regular salt therapy combined with using natural Shea butter (emollient & moisturiser) as well as salt baths at home have helped to continually reduce Maani’s eczema symptoms and speed up the healing process of any flare-ups. For mum Rayhana, this has been the best combination for Maani and she is really happy that she has never had to use any steroid creams on him.
Both parents say ‘It’s great to have finally found a treatment that has helped our son with his eczema. Our advice to parents with children suffering from eczema is to try b salt therapy and not to give up too soon. In our experience we have had highs and lows as Maani is still teething, but overall we have seen continuous improvement. We can’t recommend The Salt Cave enough and owners Linh & Chris are lovely people. Maani gets really excited when we get to the salt cave and chats away to them before going into the children’s cave to play with the toys while having his treatment.’ Linh explains that exposing skin to the tiny particles of the dry salt will help kill bacteria and fungi whilst cleansing the skin of allergens like pollen, dust or smoke. The salt eases the itching sensation and reduces the inflammation of rashes. Salt therapy helps children who suffer from eczema develop a greater resistance to the disease and boost their immune system. If your child suffers from eczema and you want to find a natural and effective alternative to steroid creams, then why not give salt therapy a try?

Controversy Corner
Are PushChairs Harming our Babies?
By Aloma Chandiram
Near the top of any new parent’s ‘To Buy’ list is a pushchair. It’s an essential, must-have purchase and we regularly spend hundreds of pounds when we buy them. So it might come as a surprise that there are a growing number of people for whom a buggy is considered not just a non-essential item, but also a danger to our children’s healthy development. We invited Aloma Chandiram, a Babywearing Consultant, to share why she believes we should be scratching the pushchair off our lists...
Do you like a cuddle? That closeness, the smell of the person you love - feeling them warm and comforting against you? Babywearing is the practice of carrying your baby in a sling, wrapped closely to your body, and it has many benefits - having long, gorgeous cuddles with my baby is one reason I’m a big advocate.
quite a bumpy and unsettling ride! Neither of us were enjoying the experience and she was so far away from me that I didn’t feel the connection that I had hoped for. We persisted, but half of our walks entailed her screaming so much that she ended up in my arms as I pushed an empty pushchair home.
Babywearing isn’t a new thing - it started thousands of years ago. Back when life was a little harder, and having a healthy birth was more of a distraction from the daily routine of surviving than a life changing moment, mothers would strap their baby to their bodies and get on with their daily lives.
The decision to buy a pre-loved high street baby carrier was a logical progression for me. And what a reckoning moment it was - my fractious, clingy baby was settled; sleeping and content for hours. It wasn’t the most comfortable for me and later in my babywearing journey I found more suitable options, but the price tag on this compared to my pushchair was vastly cheaper and the effects on my child were, well, priceless.
But that was a long time ago and somewhere along the way to this modern era, the use of slings just ... disappeared, to be replaced by that staple of modern baby equipment: the pushchair. And they come in so many forms! Parent-facing, forward-facing, all terrain, travel system, infant seat, carry cot - the buying decision can be quite an experience. When we were expecting our first child, my husband and I bought what seemed like the most popular (and hence, we thought, the best) pushchair. I was so excited! We set it all up before our daughter arrived and I kept dreaming about pushing my gorgeous newborn around the neighbourhood and shops. When she arrived, I put her into the carrycot and off we set for our first walk. She was just a day or so old, and she was rolled from side to side - it seemed like

The
There are many people who believe or worry that holding their baby close in a carrier or sling for a long time will cause them to be overly clingy. I would argue that clinginess comes and goes with all children and there’s nothing wrong with bringing your baby close and letting them know that their carer is there to protect and feed them – but I certainly wouldn’t object to people questioning my beliefs. It’s natural to question something like babywearing because it’s different from the norm - but we rarely stop to question whether using a buggy is the right thing to do because it is such an ingrained part of our parenting culture. But it is a question that many infant and child specialists have been asking for some time, and their conclusions certainly make interesting reading!

Dr. M. Suzanne Zeedyk carried out research in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust on the impact of buggy orientation on parent-infant interaction and infant stress (Nov. 2008). Her findings led her to conclude that for a baby, the experience of being in a buggy was “more isolated than many adults realise – and may be more emotionally impoverished than is good for children’s development”. In particular, she was concerned with the lack of interaction between baby and parent caused by away-facing buggies, “which produced the highest rate of parent and child silence”. She suggested that this could have a negative impact on the child’s speech and vocabulary development, and that not being able to see their parents’ facial and body signals whilst out and about might inhibit their social and emotional understanding of the world around them. Elizabeth Antunovic wrote a thorough and wellresearched analysis of the arguments surrounding strollers, baby carriers and infant stress. She sites evidence that suggests babies have naturally adapted to being carried upright and oriented towards their mothers, and that lying flat on their back or sat up in car seats and strollers is restrictive to their movement and bad for their spinal development. She advocates the use of baby carriers, but stresses the importance of leg support and baby facing the mother. Dr Sean Brotherson, Family Science Specialist, wrote the paper “Keys to enhancing brain development in young children” (2005). He endorses the importance of being close to your child: “Touch is a fundamental and important source of security to a child. If you deprive an infant of touch, the body and brain will stop growing in a healthy manner. Physical stroking helps premature babies gain weight more quickly and helps healthy babies digest food better. Babies cry less when they are held and carried regularly. Touch is an infant’s life line to security, attachment and reassurance.”
As well as the benefits to your baby, babywearing offers many conveniences! As a mum of two children at 3 and 1 years old here some of my top benefits:
No Hands! Babywearing is ‘hands free’ - when our
second child came along, I could not be more thankful for this gift. It made me feel like wonderwoman, making my newborn feel content whilst happily holding hands and playing with my active toddler.
Family cuddles. Babywearing gives dads, grandparents and everyone else the chance to enjoy some long and lovely cuddles with your baby and to develop a strong bond with the new addition to the family. It’s convenient. No more bruised knees from
lugging that car seat around – and your wrap takes up less space too when it isn’t needed.
Breastfeeding. Having your baby so close
allows you to feed on demand, which helps with initial milk supply.
Exercise/Physiology. Babywearing helps work out your core muscles without putting unnecessary strain on them! Communication. Being so close I can listen to my baby and see their cues quicker than if they were in a pushchair. We can talk away happily and view the world together as we walk along. Its fun! It really is. Sharing a giggle, or listening to your toddler singing away in your ear whilst on your back is a joy.
They are economical. OK, there are some wraps and carriers out there that can be pretty pricey but, overall, slings are very economical and very modestly priced compared to pushchairs.
Yes, it is safe - very safe in fact. Follow the The T.I.C.K.S. Rule for Safe Babywearing Safety. T.I.C.K.S guidelines you’re your baby will be safe and Keep your baby close and keep your baby safe. When you’re wearing a sling or carrier, don’t forget the T.I.C.K.S.
TIGHT IN VIEW AT ALL TIMES CLOSE ENOUGH TO KISS KEEP CHIN OFF THE CHEST SUPPORTED BACK
comfortable: Tight, In view at all times, Close enough to Kiss, Keep chin off the chest, Supported back. There are lots of options out there if you want to start wearing your baby. It can be a little overwhelming at first, so check out your nearest qualified babywearing consultant or sling library and they will be able to advise which will be the right one for you. Following a recommendation from one of our readers, Kerry Shephard, we recently went for a family holiday at North Hayne Farm Cottages in North Devon. Put quite simply, we LOVED it. If you are looking for a lovely family getaway in the UK, then book yourself in – you won’t regret it.

But it’s more than that too. It’s hard to describe, but all the other guests at the farm agreed that they have something special here. For my part, I think it boils down to the fact that Cheryl and Roger genuinely care: they are the special something that made our holiday so wonderful. Unlike any other holiday we have been on, they are part of the experience. The children are now begging us to return – but they don’t want to go back to North Hayne Farm Cottages, they want to go to Cheryl and Roger’s. And that speaks volumes to me.

BY NICK SHARRATT & PIPPA GOODHART
This is a simple, but fantastic book. Each double page asks the reader a question, such as, “If you could go anywhere, where would you go?” and “What kind of home would you choose?” Then it gives dozens of pictures that your child can choose from. It’s a wonderfully interactive way for children to learn about the world around them and the different things that are out there - and our children loved it.
When we drew up this list, it didn’t surprise me – it includes many of my favourites and, I’m sure, many of yours too. What really caught my interest however wasn’t the Top 10, it was the other end of the list - the titles that I’d never heard of, that only one person was recommending. They peaked my interest… so I bought a few of them! Below are my 3 favourites from the ‘bottom’ of the list:
BY JONATHAN CAPE
Hermelin is a delightful story about helping others, writing notes, and finding friendship. I suppose it’s also about judging people (or mice) as individuals, and not on preconceived stereotypes. It’s also a jolly good yarn – a fun introduction to the mystery genre for toddlers! Our children really got into this book and had fun guessing the answer to each mystery before Hermelin revealed the answer.
Who’s In The Loo BY JEANNE WILLIS & ADRIAN REYNOLDS
This story made me smile. Whilst waiting in the queue for the toilet, two children imagine who on Earth it could be that is taking so long. The book introduces the reader a variety of animals (educational) doing a variety of things in the toilet (funny) until they finally find out who is in the loo… But I won’t spoil the ending for you – you’ll have to find out for yourself!
