I love this time of year. Sure, I miss the long days and warm(er) weather of the summer, but the arrival of autumn gets me all excited, heralding, as it does, the approaching fun of dressing up for Halloween, ooohing and aaahing at fireworks and, of course, Christmas. I know it’s pretty fashionable to moan about how early Christmas starts these days, but I don’t mind. In fact, I love it. Yes, Christmas songs in the shops before December (well, mid-November) is a bit much, but I can’t deny that I enjoy hearing them. They make me smile. I didn’t always feel this way. In fact, it’s only been since I became a dad that my own inner child has been re-awakened. I think the children’s excitement must be infectious. I’m excited about how excited they are! So I’m not going to apologise for the amount of Christmassy content you’ll find in this edition of the magazine! Don’t worry, we’ve still included all your usual favourites, but we’re using Shop About to focus on gift ideas (p.14-15), and we’ve put together a list of places to meet Santa that you’ll definitely want to check out (p.12). Wildlife Phonics Frieze from Oaktree Designs

hen I worked as a teacher, I was an Early Years specialist with a personal interest in phonics – so this review is right up my street. And I’m pleased to say I can whole-heartedly recommend these phonics friezes as an excellent starting point and ongoing support for your child’s reading journey. Within the pack, you receive three friezes to display on the wall. Each covers the whole alphabet and they grow with your child, becoming increasingly complex as your child’s reading ability develops. Each letter is represented by an animal illustration, with the name of the animal written out twice – first as it is normally seen, and secondly broken down into the individual sounds (phonemes) that make up the word. The second word allows the parent to ‘sound out the word’ with their child, so they learn to recognise the constituent parts of the words. It must be said that the illustrations are stunning. Commissioned specifically for these friezes and utterly unique, the pictures are very realistic, bright and beautifully drawn. The animals chosen vary from the

common (ant, cat) to the lesser known (inchworm, nautilus), so children not only learn to read, but are also educated about some of the different species that share our world with us. For very young children, the friezes would make a lovely wall display, introducing them to the names of the animals even when they’re learning to talk. Overall, the friezes are well designed to cover a wide age range and to support children through the different phases of their development. In short, this is a beautiful, high quality resource that would make a lovely addition to any child’s room, whilst being educational at the same time. Halloween Spider Cupcakes

Ingredients • 125g butter at room temp • 125g golden caster sugar • 110g self-raising flour • 2½ tbsp. cocoa powder • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1 tsp grated orange zest • 3 to 4 tablespoons of chocolate buttercream icing

• Chocolate flavoured strands • 50g plain chocolate chips or plain chocolate chopped into small pieces • 4 boxes Mikado Dark chocolate Sticks (Pokey Sticks) • 50g plain chocolate • Liquorice Allsorts

Method / Makes 10 CUPCAKES 1. Preheat the oven to 180C / 350 F. Beat together the butter and sugar until fluffy and smooth. Sift together the flour and cocoa powder in a separate bowl. Add the eggs to the creamed butter mixture a little at a time, adding a tablespoon of the flour mixture with the second egg. Mix in the orange zest and the remaining flour and cocoa until blended. Finally stir in the chocolate pieces. 2. Line a large muffin tray with 10 paper cases and fill each one until two thirds full. Bake the muffins for 20 to 22 minutes. Allow to cool, then remove the muffins and place on a wire rack. 3. When cool, spread a little chocolate buttercream over each cupcake and then sprinkle with chocolate flavoured strands. 4. To make the legs, take the chocolate sticks and cut off the piece not covered with chocolate. Cut a quarter of the sticks in half. Stick four short lengths on each side of the spider’s body, then melt the chocolate, dip one end of each of the longer sticks into the chocolate and attach these to the shorter lengths.

Deadman’s Finger Sandwiches Ingredients • Thin sliced white bread, crusts removed • Cream cheese or peanut butter

• Soft margarine • Almonds

5. Arrange them on baking sheets lined with greaseproof and allow the chocolate to set– the melted chocolate will harden as it cools keeping the legs stuck together. Push one end of the legs into the body of the spider and then repeat until you get four legs either side. Finish off with Liquorice Allsorts as eyes.

• Strawberry jam or tomato ketchup

Method 1. Gently flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin to make them more pliable then spread with a little margarine and either some cream cheese or peanut butter. 2. Roll up the sandwiches and make three indentations with a blunt knife to form the finger joints. 3. Trim the ends of the fingers into a ‘V’ shape and stick an almond on to each tip with a little cream cheese or peanut butter to form the nails. 4. Now for the gruesome bit - squirt some tomato ketchup over the end of the finger for the blood!

When we embark on our parenting journey, we are thrown very much in at the deep end. Many of us feel overwhelmed and our relationships are tested to the limits. We’re getting to know this precious little person who is changing our world - but we are also learning a great deal about ourselves.

things that frustrate you, what replenishes you and what depletes you? You already know each other very well but if you’re willing to explore a little deeper and open the dialogue, you will learn new things about yourselves.

We’ve imagined what our child will be like, what sort of parents we want to be and also pictured what life as a family would be like. Then as they arrive, the time for planning often stops and we soon become reactive, simply doing our best to cope.

Once you’ve created a picture of your ideal family life, put it down on paper in a summary. The clearer your goal is, the more likely you are to achieve it.

But having a baby is only but the start of having a family. And in my mind, a great culture is the crux a happy family life. A harmonious home life is the springboard to fulfilling our individual potential - it is the wish of every parent but it is something that requires focus, planning and good communication to achieve. Here are a few questions to help you check you’re on track:

1. Do you have a dream? Like with anything in life, one of the keys to success is having a clear goal. If you take time to talk about the relationship you want with your partner, your values, the principles you want to teach your children, and understand each others’ aspirations and needs, you will reap the rewards tenfold later on. Have you spoken about your own childhoods, what you liked and disliked about your upbringing? Do you talk about your home life, about what makes you happy,

2. Have you written about your ideal family life?

3. Do you sing from the same hymn sheet? Do it together. Having a common vision will make a huge difference to everyone. As a couple it will bring you closer, improve communication, and you’ll be better able to support each other and present a united front to your children. Remember that you as a couple are the rock of your family.

4. Do your house rules fit in with your vision? You can choose your house rules to help you create your ideal home life and nurture your relationships. Do you regularly review your house rules together and adjust them as your children grow up? Making those decisions together is a wonderful way to move towards your goal.

5. Do you trust yourselves? There are myriad ways to be a family. Give yourself permission to do it your way and don’t expect yourselves to get it right all the time. Life is an ongoing creative process and families are no different. Be bold, trust yourselves and have fun cultivating a family environment that makes you happy.

Why and how thousands of women are consuming their own placentas in the days and weeks after birth. What happens after a baby is born, right after a mother pushes out her baby and cradles him in her arms? In the movies, she kisses her partner and gazes into her baby’s blue eyes. Her little bundle of joy is washed, wrapped carefully in a soft blanket and handed to her to cuddle and kiss. Then, just moments later and quite magically, the new mother is transformed into a fertile sex goddess, hair and make-up done to perfection as she introduces her new addition to her family and friends. I’m that woman who, during those movie scenes, begins shouting at the television. “What about the placenta?!” What about the most important, sustainable organ on the planet? The organ that supplies all mammals with essential nutrients and gases while in the womb. Why is this powerful, precious and nourishing organ so often and so simply forgotten? Even in many birth education classes the third stage of birth, where the placenta detaches from the uterine wall and through several further contractions must also be birthed by the new mother, is covered in vague detail in less than 5 minutes.

I’m biased and I’m the first to admit that. I’m a placenta specialist (I’ll explain in a moment) and I’ve handled (through vinyl gloves), blended, dehydrated, powdered, encapsulated, printed and prepared hundreds of placentas for new mothers around the world. I find the placenta a fascinating, magical and beautiful organ in all its forms. Yes, I’m different and I won’t take offense if you call me weird. As a placenta specialist my job is to nurture, cradle and respect this forgotten organ and transform it into remedies that over the years I’ve seen benefit so many new mothers after birth.

Firstly, before you can appreciate why I do what I do, it’s important that I explain what the placenta is and why it’s so powerful. The placenta feeds every growing mammal foetus throughout pregnancy with a unique and still mysterious form of nutrient transfer through small cavities of space between the uterine wall and the maternal side of the placenta. The nutrients, hormones and gases, like oxygen, are absorbed from the mother’s blood by the placenta and are passed to the foetus through the umbilical cord. In return, carbon dioxide, cellular waste and other waste materials are passed back to the mother for filtration through her own filter organs. The placenta does not hold, store or keep waste materials, it transports them. The placenta is also an endocrine organ and on its own produces many pregnancy and breastfeeding hormones that sustain the pregnancy and prepare the mother for feeding her baby after birth. Full of blood, amino acids (proteins) and minerals, the placenta is a packed full of nourishing goodness that would cost you plenty, should you buy the man-made form separately at your local health food store. But more importantly, these nutrients and hormones are produced by, made for and uniquely designed to suit each individual mother. While it’s not proven, yet, I can hypothesise that the nutrients inside the placenta are far more bioavailable when consumed by the mother compared to store-bought vitamins and minerals, because she is the person who made them. Consumed? Yes, consumed. As in eaten, swallowed or ingested. That is exactly what I’m talking about. As a placenta specialist, I help mothers consume their placenta after birth. I prepare fresh placentas in a clean and hygienic environment into several remedies that are eaten (by that mother only) after birth in order to support them emotionally and physically in the coming weeks.

Why would any mother want to do this you ask? Well, post-natal depression reportedly affects 1 in 10 women in the UK. England’s breastfeeding rates, while initially high at 84%, drop considerably by 3 months to just 17% and many say the cause is low milk supply. Low iron levels are common after birth and it’s fairly common for new mothers to bleed for 5 weeks or longer after birth, which is a clear sign their body is slow to heal which is one of the direct causes of low iron levels. What if the key to reducing all these ailments has been there all along? I believe the body gives it to us as a gift right after we birth our babies. Over the last 10 years, growing numbers of women, thousands even, around the world are discovering the benefits of their own placenta. It’s been the best kept secret for centuries. Through my work as a placenta specialist, I’ve met many grandmothers in London who, in the 60’s or 70’s, cooked their placenta into a paté and enjoyed it on a piece of toast in the days after birth. I’ve met other mothers that, 15 years ago, fried their placenta in a pan with onions and enjoyed a placenta and onion bap for dinner. Placenta Bolognese was also a favourite. I consumed my placenta after birth 6 years ago, but in a different way. I drank parts of my placenta in smoothies, blended with fresh organic strawberries and banana. I swallowed small pieces of raw placenta daily for 2 weeks and then I cooked, dehydrated and encapsulated the rest, taking 2-3 capsules a day for another 4 weeks. At around 6-8 weeks post-partum I felt balanced enough and began to forget to take my capsules, which was my body’s way of telling me I didn’t need them anymore. I took a few here and there in the following months. This was my second birth and the difference from the first was astronomical. As with so many others who share their experiences, this time my milk supply was quick and abundant, my energy levels were stable, my moods were predictable and my iron levels were higher than during pregnancy. I bled very little, felt ‘on top of my game’ despite very little sleep and I even started a new successful business before my son was 6 months old. And my skin and hair…oh, I felt like a supermodel! Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez don’t smother their faces in expensive deer placenta face cream for no reason.

My first post-birth experience wasn’t horrific or disastrous. It was difficult however and certainly more difficult and exhausting than I had anticipated. I did bleed for 4 weeks, I did struggle with my milk supply and despite exclusively breastfeeding for 9 months, my breasts were never very full. My hair fell out in clumps around 4 months post-partum, my nails were brittle and my skin was dry. I expected more and wanted more from my post-natal experience. By sharing my story with midwives and doulas around the country I discovered that many more women were searching for that ‘something more’ ... and the placenta seemed to be the key. I continued my research and by 2010 I was, and still am, running the independent Placenta Remedies Network and website that helps women find locally trained and certified placenta specialists to help them prepare their placenta safely for consumption after birth. For an organ that has been ignored, pushed aside, labeled ‘hazardous waste’ and almost entirely forgotten for so many years, I feel the new rise in the use of placenta remedies are not only re-establishing the third stage of birth as a recognised part of the birth process, but also restoring women’s faith in themselves and their own capabilities after birth. Will we see a placenta attached to a newborn baby in the next blockbuster movie? Probably not! But the post-natal phase can be an empowering experience and I hope placenta remedies will continue to provide many more new mothers with the emotional and physical support they need to fulfill their own expectations of themselves after birth.

The County Council recently put forward proposals to close all of Oxfordshire’s 44 Children’s Centres to make £8 million of savings, due to government cuts. The centres will be closed, replaced with 8 family resource centres for 0-19 year olds, which will not offer any universal access (ie. they will be referral only, eg by social services). A group of local residents, governors, union members and opposition politicians are campaigning together to save the centres and their staff, but they need your help. “If you’re a parent,” says the group, “You’ll know that at some point we’re all parents in need. As well as providing easily accessible support to all families in the early years, the centres also help families in greater need become visible and receive additional help quickly and without stigma. Children are kept safe and crises prevented. They reduce demand on the NHS and other social services, saving money. Closing them is a false economy”.

Zoe Blenkhorn runs her own business as a representative for Forever Living Products. She tells us why it’s the perfect job for her…

Why did you decide to work for yourself?

My background is in Human Resources and recruitment and my passion is working with people and helping them develop. When I worked in the corporate world, I massively resented working for someone else and building their dreams instead of mine! I really wanted to find work that would be flexible around my family, and would allow me to spend time with those I wanted to be with.

How did you choose what to do?

I had never heard of Forever before. I met a lady who said she worked part time with a substantial income and flexibility, and was intrigued enough to find out more. We met for a coffee and I admit I was very skeptical initially - I seriously doubted anything would ever come from it! However I quickly saw a business model that ticked all my boxes. I was impressed with Forever’s track record and could see no catch, other than it needing time and effort, just like any business. I also loved the team aspect - you work for yourself, but not by yourself.

How do you juggle being a mum and a business owner?

I try hard to separate my work and my family time. I work whilst my son is at nursery in the mornings and 3-4 evenings a week when he is asleep. The time I have with my son is precious and we love nothing more than going on adventures in the woods, baking and having fun! The two do sometimes merge as I work with a large team, but my son knows that mummy works so as to be able to afford treats and this keeps him happy!

What do you love about being self-employed?

The flexibility. I choose when I work, and with whom. If my son has an event at nursery I love going along; if it’s hot, I work from the garden and I take holidays when I want! You also get an immense feeling of pride when you look at how far you have come and what you have achieved. Forever offer travel incentives, and I have qualified to travel to several countries (all expenses paid), including an amazing trip that we all went on to California last year, and to Singapore earlier this year. Hard work is rewarded incredibly well, and can include the whole family.

What are the worst bits about it?

I need to be more disciplined with checking my iPad, and not running to it every time it pings in the evenings! Working for yourself means it is easy to find yourself still working late into the evening, however you do reap the rewards for doing this.

What would you do differently if you had your time again? I would start my business much sooner!

What advice would you give to mums thinking about starting their own business?

There are so many options out there, you don’t need to settle for something that doesn’t make you happy. Starting your own business requires a long-term commitment to growing it, but the rewards can be phenomenal. Starting your own business can generate far more income than a part time job (if that is what you want) and the satisfaction of being in control of your time is invaluable.
