We’re well aware that most people reading Toddle About will be mums. However, according to our recent reader survey, more dads are getting in on the act – which is great to see. And we don’t want to leave them out!
So much parenting literature is written by women, for women - and there is nothing wrong with that in itself. In fact, it makes total sense. But the lack of content available from a dad’s perspective, written to help dads, has consequences – and it means everyone misses out. Not only are dads’ own needs often not being supported, but this has a knock-on effect that they can’t be as supportive to the mums as they might otherwise be.
That’s why we’ve invited Gordon Dowall-Potter from MANtenatal to share his top 5 tips for any expecting dad-to-be or birth partner. Everything Gordon and his team do at MANtenatal is through the eyes of a dad and this gives his 5 top tips a refreshing angle.
MANTENATAL’S TOP TIPS FOR NEW DADS
YOU ARE NOT YOUR FATHER!
No matter your upbringing, you get to decide on the type of father you want to be.
BECOMING A DAD IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT
One of the key messages we tell all the guys who join our squad is that they must get off the bench and get in the game. Yes, that does mean rolling up your sleeves and getting close to all elements of the birth, pre, during and post. We are great believers that you won’t be a real dad unless you get your baby’s poo under your fingernails ☺ .
READ TO YOUR BABY BEFORE THEY ARRIVE
The power of your voice and the connection it has with your baby cannot be underestimated. No need to wait for baby to arrive, read to bump. There is so much research that confirms how this simple act can make a huge impact on how you bond with your baby.
NEVER WEAR JEANS TO HOSPITAL
The average temperature in a delivery room is around 28° Celsius. This is why dads and birth partners should take clothes that they can relax in. Would you wear jeans to a beach when the temp was 28 degrees?
TELL YOUR PARTNER HOW AMAZING THEY ARE
Regardless if it’s a vaginal birth or caesarean, what a woman’s body is designed to do is amazing. Not only will they grow life, they have the ability to feed that life too. Women are amazing!
Gordon Dowall-Potter is the owner and founder of MANtenatal, the leading digital platform designed exclusively for dads-to-be and birth partners. Endorsed by the NHS and midwives from across the world, MANtenatal digital courses are designed to be completed from the comfort of your own home. With a choice of Offline Course videos, live Group Courses and Private 1:1 Coaching, you can find out more at www.MANtenatal.com or via their socials

How TO use praise wisely
by Richard TemplarPraise – and plenty of it – is often seen as a given in good parenting. However, it’s not quite that simple. It’s certainly true that praise is an important part of the job of raising happy children, but you have to do it right. Otherwise you’ll do more harm than good. Don’t worry – once you understand the pitfalls they’re easy enough to avoid, and whether your child is two or twelve, the principles are the same.
Keep it in proportion
The expression, ‘You can’t have too much of a good thing’ certainly doesn’t apply to praise. That doesn’t mean you should be stingy, but you should give praise in proportion to your child’s achievements. If you over-praise them you devalue the currency.
If you tell them they’re superbly brilliant when they do something pretty average, what will you say when they do something really brilliant?
If every little thing they achieve is rewarded with copious praise, they’ll be terrified of failing you. And they don’t need that kind of pressure.
This is the crux of the problem with praising your child too often or too fulsomely – your child craves your praise so much that you’ve created a real pressure you never intended.
You can recognise your child’s achievements with thanks as well as praise. That takes off some of the pressure, and allows you to acknowledge them without being effusive. What’s more, it’s a great way of reinforcing good behaviour, and reassuring them that you notice when they get
things right, not just when they go wrong. ‘Thanks for putting your dirty mug by the sink.’ ‘Thanks for getting in the car without any fuss.’ ‘You’ve put all your toys back in the box – thank you.’
Praise them for the right things Have you ever stopped to think about what you praise your child for? I know parents who praise their children most frequently for winning things. In some cases, it’s sports, in others it’s school work. I know others whose praise is largely focused on polite behaviour. Or looking beautifully turned out. Or being ‘good’.
The things we choose to praise our children for tell them more about our values than almost anything else. If they get all the best responses from you for looking beautiful, or for winning, or for eating everything on their plate, this is what they will unconsciously assume is the most important thing, and they’ll put all their efforts into it in order to gain your approval.
This means you have a huge responsibility to praise them for the right things.
For example, are you more likely to praise them for winning than for trying hard? No of course you’re not, but a lot of other parents would. It doesn’t mean you can’t ever say, ‘Well done’ if they’re pleased with themselves for doing well in their reading or winning their race. But be conscious of the balance you give them.
On the plus side, this means praise is a hugely effective way to imbue your children with the
values that matter to you. Telling them, ‘I was impressed that you played with Ali when she was feeling new and shy’ tells your child that kindness and considerateness are important qualities. This is a positive way to use praise (while still keeping it in proportion) to encourage your child to be hard working, thoughtful, unselfish, courageous, determined and kind. And whatever else you think matters.
Make it specific
If you want a little praise to go a long way, your child will value it far more if you show you’re really interested in their achievements.
Which do you think they’d rather hear: ‘What a lovely drawing!’ or ‘What a lovely drawing – I do like the way you’ve managed to make the horse look as
Pride is praise
It’s a very common habit these days for parents to tell their children they’re proud of them. You’d think that would only be a good thing, wouldn’t you? And yet it’s a form of praise, and you do your kids no favours telling them how proud they make you.
Here’s the problem. Pride in your child is a strong emotion, so what you’re inadvertently telling your child is that your emotional wellbeing is predicated on their achievements. That’s a hell of a burden to place on them, on top of all the other pressures that praise can bring.
But you do feel proud, don’t you? And you want to let them know they’ve done well. That’s fine. Just keep your emotions out of it. Your child will be delighted to hear that you admire how they kept their temper under control. Tell them you wish you were as good at making friends, or ask them how they managed to learn their moves for the nativity play. All these things will make them feel good, without feeling you have an emotional investment in them being able to repeat it every time.
Once in a blue moon, when your child does something truly remarkable, it won’t hurt to tell them you feel proud. But limit yourself to, say, half a dozen times through their whole childhood so it doesn’t become a habit (no, I’m not kidding). And, as with praise, think very hard about what values you’re imparting in your choice of what to be proud of – and whether you’re inadvertently setting a high bar for them in future.
Of course, you’re welcome to feel proud of them as often as you like. Just don’t inflict it on them by saying it out loud.
if it’s really moving. How did you do that?’ Yep – be specific with your praise if you can and ask them questions too. That will really make them glow.
This is also a great strategy when something doesn’t really warrant praise but you still want your child to feel good. If their drawing is, frankly, nothing special, you certainly don’t want to tell them it’s brilliant – you’re setting them up for a fall if you keep telling them they’re fabulous or beautiful or clever when they’re in fact perfectly average. Questioning is a good way to sidestep that danger altogether. So when they show you their average painting you can say, ‘Ooh – let me see. How did you decide what colours to use?’ They’ll be chuffed you’re showing real interest, and you won’t have set an unrealistic standard for them.
Don’t tell them they’re beautiful
“Aren’t you handsome in that outfit?’ ‘Don’t you look pretty?’ It’s easy to say these things to our kids, but what we’re telling them is that being physically beautiful is important. When they grow up to find they’re simply nice-looking like most other people, they’ll hate it. After all, you’ve spent their childhood signalling that great physical beauty is the thing to aspire to.
So you can say, ‘What a pretty dress!’ or ‘That really suits you.’ By all means let them know that blue goes with their eyes, or they’ve put together a great combination of clothes (if they have). But not too often – because looks aren’t that important – and don’t give the impression that things they can’t change about their appearance are of any significance.

Help! My baby keeps waking up at night!
If I had a penny for every time someone told me when I was pregnant or heard someone say to a pregnant woman to ‘’sleep while you can’’ or to ‘’enjoy sleep while it lasts.’’
There are tonnes of reasons why night wakes happen. In fact, there are as many reasons as the individuality of each child and each carer because when it comes to sleep, there is no one size fits all. However, I have picked some of the most common reasons to help you better understand what is developmentally healthy and normal when it comes to infant sleep, and when something else might be going on.
They are hungry
Sometimes babies require more feeds through the night because they are not getting enough milk through the day due to distractions. If this is the case, then expect they may want to make up for this through the night. You may need to try feeding in a dark, calm, quiet room throughout the day.
Starting solids can also cause wakes related to hunger. If your baby is taking more solids during the day than milk, this can result in increased wakes overnight. Breast milk or formula should always be your baby’s primary source of nutrition until at least age one.
They are seeking connection
Our society is obsessed with independence, especially when it comes to sleep, but our babies are biologically designed to be near us. Babies are meant to wake and call for us. This is a built-in survival instinct designed to protect them and it is perfectly normal. Babies attach only through the senses at the first stage of their lives; they need to be able to see, touch, smell, hear, or feel us. Therefore, when they wake up when you put them down, it is not because of the crib or the bed, it is because they want to be near you. They are uncomfortable or ill
If your baby is squirming around looking uncomfortable, arching their back, grunting and/or grimacing, crying as a result, this can be an indicator of discomfort caused by digestion or gassiness. When solids are introduced at the age of 6 months typically, night wakes might increase as a result. Keeping a food diary to recognise any correlations between increased wakes and foods eaten can be very helpful. If you are breastfeeding, it is worth keeping a food diary for yourself too for the same reason. Please do not rush to eliminate any food from your diet or your baby’s once they are on solids before consulting a professional first. Wind could be also as a result to gulping air while eating due to poor latch to the breast or the bottle teat due to tongue restriction.
Teething (generally starting at the age of 4-6 months) is another cause of discomfort. Just like a toothache, teething is much worse at night when babies are lying down. Letting
a baby chew on cold objects (e.g., a clean, cool washcloth) during the day and rubbing their gums with a clean finger can also help to relieve the pain.
They are experiencing too many changes
If your family is going through big changes or having highly emotional experiences, your baby will likely feel it. Anything that happens during the day will manifest in sleep at night. Changes could be moving, travelling, job stress, or emotional loss, amongst many other things. Babies cannot self-regulate; this means that they rely on us to co-regulate. If you notice that you are feeling more stressed, your baby may seem stressed. When you are anxious, your baby may seem anxious.
Sometimes this means that we need to take some time to take care of ourselves as parents. We need to be able to be a calm presence for babies. They are going through developmental milestones.
A baby grows, changes, and develops rapidly in the first year of life and at different paces for every child. Babies go through periods of drastic change in development, which allow them to learn important new skills (crawling, walking, talking, pulling themselves up, rolling etc.). These skills are very exciting but overwhelming for your child. Babies learn at night; their brains do not turn off at bedtime. Ensure your child has plenty of time to practice their new skills during the day. Often, when going through a new milestone, this results in a sleep regression at the age of 4, 6, 8-10, 12, 18 and 24 months. Some phases are harder than others, but your child will emerge on the other side with a brand-new skill in hand or brain!
There are far more reasons why your baby and child might be waking up at night, but it is important to keep in mind that this is normal (unless a red flag has been identified) and it will not last forever. Parents are under so much societal pressure when it comes to infant sleep and we desperately need to normalise it. When next time someone says there is one solution for your baby’s sleep ‘’problem’’, now you know better because there is no such thing as one solution. Remember, babies are meant to wake, you are doing an amazing job, and your baby is likely doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing. At the same time, if something is not working for you, you can change it. It does not have to be cry it out it wait it out only.

Jaspar The Dreamy Elephant (RRP. £49.99) is a multi award-winning baby sleep aid and bonding companion

record up to 20 minutes of your own voice.
My little 3-month-old girl loves Jaspar and its features. It’s a beautiful sleeping aid and I found it to be very helpful in getting my little one to relax and sleep. My baby was crying, struggling to go to sleep and seemed very fussy at times. Now that she has got Jaspar, she enjoys the soothing sounds of chirping birds, which is her favourite. Jaspar helped her calm down and have a peaceful night sleep. Jaspar has truly helped her getting ready for bed as she now recognises the bird sounds which she now associates with bedtime.
There are other white noises too and I think the voice recording is a great feature. My husband and I recorded our voices and our little one recognised the voices immediately and gave us a big smile.
This product is a great addition and has really helped my baby. The material is very soft and Jaspar is light and cuddly. It arrived well packed and included a bag. Overall it’s the perfect sleeping aid for babies and I would highly recommend this product. Shop at www.thedreamyelephantcompany.com
