Big Emotions by Dr Anne Lane

I remember my son, aged three. It was 4am and he was in the bathroom wailing. ‘The toothpaste looks funny!’ he sobbed as I stumbled out of bed to see what the problem was. ‘The toothpaste’s fine.’ I sighed as I picked him up to take him back to bed. ‘It’s not. I don’t like it!’ He began to yell hysterically. Young children’s emotions can be big, confusing and, frankly, overwhelming. It might be that they have a particular idea about something or they’ve become hooked into a problem. Rather than face a full meltdown you try to find a fix. You replace one perfectly fine banana with another, you clean an invisible mark from a jumper or scramble around for a different colour lolly. But the emotion simply seems to escalate. The replacement isn’t ‘right’. The colour is still ‘wrong’. The smell is ‘funny’ and ‘not good’. So how do we help our child through these tricky emotional states? What’s the best way for a parent to respond to the many challenging behaviours that can come alongside them? As I think back to that 4am toothpaste incident, the thing that helped (once I had tried the ‘there’s nothing wrong’ line), was getting down to his level and simply saying, ‘You feel really upset because the toothpaste looks funny’.

Let me explain why such basic steps create a foundation for trust and ease around a young child’s emotions and how to move through these big emotions with your own child.

The most important thing to know is that young children rely on you to work out their emotions. Although they often become fixated on a problem or a particular solution, really they are looking to make sense of their emotions through you. You’re the person they trust to learn what’s safe and what isn’t and how they should respond. They need to know that you can bear their emotions, understand what’s going on and guide them through.

Here are five steps to help you when those big, overwhelming emotions arrive:

Model sturdiness and security: Your child’s emotions can feel scary. They can be big and disorientating. They are frantically either trying to take control or becoming overwhelmed and scared. It’s therefore important that you model sturdiness and security and prioritise keeping your child safe. You might say: ‘I can see you’re feeling a lot of big feelings. I won’t let you hurt me or damage your toys. You’re safe here with me.’

Connect with the feelings: When you connect to your child’s feelings, you watch and listen and summarise in very simple terms. Sometimes your child’s upset is understandable, at other times it can be baffling. Either way, by acknowledging their experiences, they trust that you are paying attention. You might say ‘You didn’t want the banana cut,’ or ‘You want me to know that these trousers are the wrong colour’. Apr-Jun 2022 Toddle About Suffolk 9

My final piece of advice is to be kind to yourself.

Help them process the emotion: You want your child to start to recognise and observe their own feelings, rather than just reacting. To do this, describe an emotion with the word ‘feel’ in front: ‘You feel cross’, or ‘You feel sad and worried’. When you add an emotion word such as cross or sad or worried, your child is more able to observe their own experience. Rather than just reacting, they slowly begin thinking and reflecting.

Helping your child through all of these big emotions can be a bumpy ride. There will be days when it feels easier and days when your energy and focus are being pulled in all directions. Take heart. Your child doesn’t need perfect parenting, she needs good enough and that will mean plenty of mistakes and repairs and do overs, with lots of reflecting and talking. Nothing is more helpful and supportive than this.

Guiding your child through: One of the most confusing aspects of parenting a toddler is that they often don’t seem to know what they really want. They want the banana sliced and then they hate it that you’ve sliced it. They wish they could have another ice lolly but then cry when you manage to find one. Trying to fix the problem or offer choices simply leaves them feeling more confused and overwhelmed. When emotions are frantic and confusing, your job is to slow things down and acknowledge and soothe. Although the emotions can be intense, the more sturdy and aware you are, the more effectively they settle.

When your child struggles with fearful, anxious emotions Although anxiety feels frightening, it’s important to think of it as a normal human emotion. Your job is to help your child learn how to manage it by creating a sense of safety and security whilst helping them work through the feeling.

Here are some ways in which you can support your child:

Slow things down and talk about the feelings/ needs that come up for your child: ‘You feel a bit wobbly’, ‘You want mummy to be near’.

Make sure your movements are gentle and steady and comfortable: Your child picks up on your body language more than your words. Slower, sturdy movements and simple phrases signal safety.

Find a sweet spot in between trying to push your child to overcome a fear and simply pulling away: This might be helping your child join in with a small action. For example, you could say, ‘You’re really not sure about dogs, let’s do a tiny little wave just so we can find a brave feeling to help you’.

Reflecting later: If your child’s emotions have been large and distressed, it’s helpful to return later, once things have settled, to what happened. This works best when your child is well rested and fed and everything is settled. The secret here is to give a simple description of what happened. You could say: ‘Mummy loves you and you felt some really big emotions when we went to playgroup. You felt really cryey and Jessie had to cuddle you and help you say goodbye’. When you talk about things afterwards without tension or judgement, you give your child an extra sense of security. These emotions were tricky but they were okay. Mummy and I can cope. Later, tell the story of the feeling. Balance describing the worried feeling with the small brave feeling. ‘We saw a dog and you felt wobbly. So mummy stayed with you and we did a little brave wave to the dog to make us feel a bit better’.

MARBLED JUBILEE CUPCAKES Ingredients

(makes 12)

• 170g margarine • 170g sugar • 3 eggs • 170g self raising flour • Red and blue food colouring

• Icing sugar • Red and blue M&Ms, or similar PLUS:

• Paper cake cases • Muffin Tin • Cocktail sticks (to make flags)

Directions 1. Mix together the margarine and sugar in a large bowl (with a wooden spoon or mixer) until smooth and pale in colour.

2. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each. 3. Stir in the flour. 4. Divide mixture into three bowls, add red food colouring to one, blue to another, and leave one uncoloured.

5. Put cake cases into the muffin tray, and put a

spoon of each colour cake mixture into each cake case. (Only fill them half way as they will rise!)

6. Bake in an oven for 15 minutes at 180oC. 7. When cooled, make some icing by mixing icing

sugar with a little water, and spread onto the cakes.

8. Add M&Ms, and print out some flags to stick to

nals child’s sigthat r u o y n o k up way How to picpond to them in a being and res oves their well impr As a parent we can find ourselves on an emotional roller coaster, desperately looking for some solid ground to hold onto as we plead with our child, ‘What do you want from me?’. The good news is you have the roadmap in front of you. It takes time to learn but the ability to pick up on our children’s signals and respond to them are the most important parenting skills we can have. Being really understood and having a close connection with your caregiver, even when you feel your worst, is the key to psychological wellbeing. Read on for some top tips about how to do just that.

Allow Space

The first tip is to allow space. While we may be tempted to jump in when our child is struggling, fix a problem or stop the crying, take a breath first of all so you can tune into what’s really going on for them. Giving space allows you to respond (not react) and if you are interested in what’s going on for them, you lay the groundwork for them becoming interested too as their brains grow.

Next, Look for Clues With newborn babies we spend hours trying to figure out what they are communicating. With close

inspection, we scrutinise their little face to try to discern their need - are they hungry, tired or have a dirty nappy? As babies grow into toddlers they learn to signal needs more clearly but they don’t always ‘cue’ their needs obviously. Remember - behaviour does not always clearly signal the emotion underneath, but all behaviour is communication, so we need to decode what’s going on. For example, kids may act in a grumpy way when they are hungry or say they are ‘fine’ when they feel upset. By paying close attention to their non-verbal behaviours, facial expression and tone of voice we can learn to read their ‘cues’ (which shows their needs) and their ‘miscues’ (which hides their needs). The closer we are able to truly read their needs the better we will be at responding to them.

Organise Their Feelings

Babies and toddlers have intense emotions but need help from adults to organise their feelings. We do this with babies by picking them up when they cry or holding their hand when they are anxious. We know from brain science that having another person with us when our feelings are intense means they settle more quickly. Apr-Jun 2022 Toddle About Suffolk 23

Pixar’s 2015 computer-animated film Inside Out is a great way to teach children about the different emotions they experience.

Get Your Timing Right

If there is behaviour that needs addressing after a big emotional moment, it’s important to come back to it later, when everyone’s brain is in a calm state. Use pictures and figures, read stories and gesture for young children. For children of nursery school age who can use words, start by connecting with the need, something like “I could see how upset you were when I picked you up from nursery, you were having so much fun and didn’t want to come home”. Then and only then discuss the behaviour, something like “we need to find another way for you to let me know how big your feeling is because hitting me is not the right way”. Without anger or judgement, in time your child will open up to you, learn to reflect back, own their mistakes and try again next time. Their brain is a work in progress and the parent who can read their need, respond calmly and teach them later will reap the rewards for years to come.

For older children it’s very powerful to name the emotion you see. For example, you might say, “You seem so angry about that,” or, “You are so sad to leave”. Children need to be taught the vocabulary of emotions so they understand what is going on, so take every opportunity you can to teach them (by the way, the film Inside Out is great for this). Note that while boundaries need to be held calmly and firmly, when emotions are high this is not the time for long explanations. Short, clear communication and being alongside your child will allow their big emotions to settle and what seemed overwhelming will become manageable.

In Conclusion…

Use these tips consistently, gently and genuinely and your communication will become strong and healthy and with that your relationship will thrive. As your child feels connected to you, they learn the skills of emotional regulation and your relationship with them becomes the vehicle for positive change. The research is clear: healthy family relationships improve wellbeing and act as a protective factor against life challenges and mental health difficulties now and for many years to come.
