Mother and Baby Yoga How you really can do yoga with babies! By Belinda Staplehurst

I’ve been teaching mother & baby yoga since 2005 and people still ask “ How can you do yoga with babies?” Very simply, is the answer. Babies are natural yogis: they know how to move their bodies instinctively to get more comfortable and to strengthen. Babies also know how to breathe in a beautifully relaxed way – have you ever watched your baby’s wonderful belly breathing when asleep? So what are the benefits of mother and baby yoga? For mums: yoga helps to manage stress and tiredness, to ease stiffness from the body, to strengthen the body after birth and to enjoy special time with their babies and other new friends in class. For babies: yoga helps babies to become more relaxed, to develop more strength and coordination, to balance their digestive systems and to enjoy special time with their mums. The other concern is “My baby won’t behave for an hour and a half!” which is how long the classes last. The answer is your baby doesn’t need to behave. At any one time during the session some babies will need changing, feeding, cuddling, or will be asleep... all this is normal. During those times you as the mum can still watch the practices so that you can take them home with you (you will also get regular handouts). A typical mother and baby yoga session Let me describe a ‘typical’ session, bearing in mind that each class is unique! You sit in a circle and share an update on how you and your baby are. Many of the groups become very close and supportive over the weeks so sometimes these discussions may last a while. You then do some stretches and upper body looseners, paying attention to your breathing and posture. You usually have a chance to do some postnatal yoga in different positions such as on all

fours or lying on your back, much of which helps to strengthen the core muscles. Having relaxed your body and cleared your mind you can then massage your baby in a more relaxed way. This prepares the babies too for the hip sequences - a series of easy movements which can help with releasing wind such as bringing the knees into the chest. Depending on the mood and developmental stage of the babies, you give your baby a range of different movements and sensations – including regular tummy time and gentle rocking. All of this accompanied by words or songs, and the breath. There is always a relaxation at the end of the sessions. Many of the babies will have worked hard during the yoga so will be ready for a sleep! To quote some of the mums from recent classes: It remains the only thing we’ve done together that has something in it for both of us, and for us together. I can’t tell you how unique it is. Julia mother of Rose Barney loved the sessions and it was great to learn some new moves and songs to try at home on our own. I found my muscle tone really developed well during the course, and was especially pleased to find my tummy muscles again! Laura mother of Barney Belinda’s yoga group provided a wonderful opportunity for Anna and I to focus on each other and to exercise and relax, without worrying about any of the domestic stresses that often accompany the arrival of a new baby. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Claire mother of Anna

Local Business Reviews

So what are they really like? Bump, baby and toddler businesses reviewed by our readers

KNR Jewellery It was the beginning of March when I realised that Mother’s Day was round the corner. I wanted to get my wife a gift that was personal and impressive enough to convey how much I appreciate her – something a little different. But what? KNR Jewellery came to the rescue. They create personalised silver jewellery, using the fingerprints or drawings of your children. Now that our eldest is four years old and going to school, I’ve realised that children really do grow up fast, and there are already so many little memories that I’ve already forgotten, I felt that capturing their little fingerprints forever in a piece of jewellery would be a nice way to remember just how small they once were. I ordered a set of four charms on a key ring – one for each child’s fingerprint, and the fourth for a message which simply read, “We love you mummy”. There are a lot of other options to choose from too –

CookieTots Classes My two year old daughter Kaila and I attended a CookieTots class in Leamington, a cooking class for children aged 2 – 4. The classes focus on exploring new tastes, learning about food and having fun. The classes are generally booked in advance, costing £6 for a 45 minute session. (This includes taking away food made and a recipe card). The teacher Charlotte was very welcoming and we found it to be a really friendly class. Each week has a different theme, using seasonal (local if possible) produce. The theme was “Orange” on the week we attended and beautiful Seville oranges were used as part of the recipe. The class began with a warm up exercise giving the children (and adults!) a chance to imitate mixing and whisking and other food related activities whilst dancing. Then the children put their aprons on and it was down to business! The children were all given a picture recipe card so they could see what ingredients they would be

from necklaces and pendants to gorgeous charm bracelets. They also have some great options for men, such as cufflinks and dog tags, which I think would be ideal presents for Father’s Day too (Sunday 17th June if you’re wondering!) I initially thought I would have to go to a studio to have the children’s prints taken, but KNR Jewellery can even take your prints by post. This was perfect for me – and it was surprising quick and simple to get the fingerprints done. The finished key ring came back one week later and I’m so impressed – the charms are really lovely and all the more so because our children’s fingerprints are pressed into each one. It’s a beautiful keepsake that we’ll keep and cherish forever. Written by Tim Freed KNR Jewellery’s impression kits start at just £39 and you can get 10% off when you quote ‘Toddle About’ or use the voucher in our centre pages. Browse and order from www.knrjewellery.co.uk using. They all enjoyed preparing their creations, mixing and adding the ingredients with the given tools. I thought the brightly coloured whisks the children had for mixing were a great touch. It took about 25 minutes to put together the recipe of orange ice cream and a tub was provided so that each child could take it home. All the children then sat down in a circle and played some more food related games. Then they all got to taste some “orange” red Leicester cheese and crackers - which went down a treat. The class was fun and educational. It was clear that Kaila and the other children had got a lot out of it. Some Mums commented on how their children had been fussy eaters before attending the classes, but how they were now more willing to try new things. We both really enjoyed the CookieTots class and I would highly recommend it. And, yes, it was a big plus point to not have to do all the tidying up at the end! Baby Sensory Classes Baby Sensory classes are for babies aged 0-13 months and last for an hour. Gemma O’Rourke who runs the class is likeable and friendly and both mother and baby feel comfortable around her. When I went to a class it took place in a spacious hall with one big empty mat and another mat filled with ball pool, baby walkers, soft steps numerous toys and even a blow up bed - every child’s dream nursery! Gemma started the class off by calling all the mums and babies to sit in a circle around the empty mat and sing a song. All throughout the song Gemma would sign the words and show the babies pictures to help them develop their language. The babies gurgled with pleasure and when the song came to an end they were praised and told how well they had done. After singing ‘Wheels on the Bus’, the hand puppets came out and the babies were introduced to Tommy Thumb, Baby Small and Fingers All for a game of ‘Peek a Boo’. After this fun it was on to some exercise which

consisted of clapping their hands and tapping their feet. This helped to strengthen the babies’ muscles and helped them to get good night’s sleep. The babies that were 5 months or older were then moved onto the other mat while the younger ones took part in some baby massage. The groups were joined together to play for 15 minutes after this while Gemma set out baskets with an assortment of rattles and shakers in them. Both parents and babies made a beautiful racket with them before singing a song showing them where their cheeks, nose and eyes are to further help their development. Near the end there was a dance activity where mother and baby moved around the room holding colourful long strips of ribbon, which made the babies gleam with happiness. When it came to the last song, ‘Wave Good Bye’ the babies rocked slowly back and forth. They had had an educational and fun-filled time; I would highly recommend it for all young babies. Written by Hayley Sweeney Baby Sensory classes run in Leamington , Warwick and Stratford. Classes cost £60 for a 10-week term. Call Gemma on 07989 502712 and quote ‘Toddle About’ to get TWO free taster sessions.

Editor’s Baby Sensory Classes Choice My 8 month old son Felix and I look forward to Gemma O’Rourke’s Baby Sensory class with anticipation every Thursday at 10.00am. Gemma is so enthusiastic and animated, the classes are so enjoyable for Felix and for me. Every week we have different developmental activities that are great fun for both of us, including fibre optic light shows, bubbles, bells, musical fun, baby signing, puppet shows, bouncing light balls and much, much more. Gemma has also given me some great ideas for activities we can do at home, such as treasure baskets full of cheap every day items, that Felix loves much more than his expensive toys! Our Baby Sensory Classes run at Hatton Village Hall, Thursdays 10.00 - 11.00am By Eleri & Felix Usher

Medicine Dummy I just had to write and tell everyone about the amazing medicine dummy I recently bought for my 14 month old daughter Sienna Rose. Giving Sienna medicine has become very distressing for both of us lately since being in hospital with her (she suffers from a rare condition called MCADD). It got to the point where I was having to hold her almost upside down and syringe medicine into her mouth. I happened to see the medicine dummy in Boots and thought it was definitely worth a try. It is a dummy with a small chamber for you fill up with medicine and it has a plunger you can gently push to ensure it has all been sucked out. I honestly cannot recommend this enough! I only bought it yesterday and I already love it! It is so easy and stress free, you simply fill with medicine and let your baby suck on it, that’s it! Pregnancy: Feeding Baby Brain

This is just one example of how important it is for you to meet your baby’s nutritional needs as well as your own, throughout pregnancy and beyond. Three weeks after conception, your baby’s brain begins to form, and continues to develop rapidly throughout your pregnancy. The brain is 60% fat and the two most important components are DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid from fish) and ARA (arachidonic acid, from meat, eggs and dairy). These fats are transferred across the placenta and are also present in human milk; they are accumulated in the brain and retina during foetal and infant development..... In late pregnancy, the mother needs to eat foods rich in DHA: the placenta takes DHA from her blood

and concentrates it in the baby’s circulation; the baby’s DHA level is now double his mother’s. If she has low blood levels of DHA, some is also taken from the richest store - her own brain. This may account for the slight shrinkage of women’s brain cells and the poor concentration experienced during late pregnancy. The baby continues to need DHA in his milk up to around 4 months. Research shows that deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in pregnancy and beyond is linked to postnatal depression, and to behavioural, learning and visual difficulties in children. Oily fish is recommended 2-3 times per week, and if you can’t manage this then you should seek professional recommendation of a fish oil supplement with good levels of DHA; vegetarian DHA supplements are available, made from algae.

The Breast or Bottle Debate

The WHO, UNICEF and other national and international health agencies recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, but in the UK we have very low rates of breastfeeding (4th lowest in Europe). Many mothers choose to bottle feed, however many want to breastfeed but encounter problems that cause them to stop - 90% of mothers who gave up breastfeeding in the first six weeks would have liked to continue for longer. How you choose to feed your baby is no-one’s decision but your own, yet it seems that whatever you decide there will always be someone ready to judge you for your decision. Mothers who breastfeed often feel self-conscious breastfeeding around others, whilst many bottle feeding mothers feel they are being judged for not breastfeeding! There is much research which has proven that breastfeeding has many health benefits to both baby and mother, yet there are also many practical advantages to bottle feeding. Everyone has an opinion on this topic so we decided to explore the arguments. We hope you find it interesting!

For Breastfeeding

For Bottle Feeding

Mother and baby bonding

Dads can enjoy feeding baby too

Breastfeeding is a wonderful way for mothers to bond with their baby, as it’s such a close and relaxing time. It is also nature’s way of making sure mum stays near to her baby and that they spend plenty of time in close contact.

It’s free

Breast milk doesn’t cost anything and for mothers who aren’t planning on expressing there’s no need to buy bottles or sterilising equipment either.

It’s easy

Admittedly many people encounter problems in the early days, just like when you’re learning anything new, but once you know what you’re doing it’s much easier than having to wash and sterilise bottles, make up formula, and warm up bottles. Likewise, when baby wakes up at night you can just feed them immediately without having to make up the milk or warm it up.

Easier to get out and about

Breast milk is always on hand wherever you go and always comes out at the perfect temperature. No need to take bottles and formula with you, or to worry about where to warm up milk. In the UK it is legal to feed your baby wherever you like and with a little practise it can be done very discreetly.

Lower risk of orthodontic problems

Breastfeeding contributes to proper jaw alignment because of the different pressures exerted on the jawbones during sucking. Breastfed infants also have fewer cavities because of the nature of the milk and the rinsing action that occurs when feeding.

18

The

Bottle feeding parents can share the feeding duties, meaning that Dad can spend quality time feeding and bonding with baby too. It also means that Dad can share the night feeds, allowing mum some much needed sleep, giving mum more energy to take care of baby in the day time.

What Is Formula?

Formula is generally made from cow’s milk which is modified. The protein and mineral content are reduced and the carbohydrate content is increased, usually by adding sugar. Milk fat is removed and substituted with vegetable, animal or mineral fats. Vitamins and trace elements are then added.

More freedom

Mothers who bottle feed aren’t tied to their babies like breastfeeding mothers, meaning they can go out and and have a well-earned break, letting Dad, or someone else, care for baby for a while.

You know how much milk your baby has had

You know exactly how much milk your baby has drunk when you’re bottle feeding, and it can be reassuring to know for sure that baby is getting enough milk. This is especially useful if there are worries that baby is not gaining enough weight.

Baby can last longer between feeds

Formula is harder for babies to digest than breast milk, meaning formula fed babies can usually go longer between feeds. This means less time spent feeding in the day and baby may sleep through the night sooner.

For Breast...

For Bottle...

Helps mum relax

No need to feel self conscious in public places

Breastfeeding ensures that mum regularly sits down and has a rest. It also releases hormones that make mum feel relaxed, which lower stress levels and makes it easier to fall back asleep after night feeds.

Helps mum lose weight

Breastfeeding naturally uses up to 500 calories a day, so helps mum get her figure back after pregnancy

Health benefits for the mother

Mothers who breastfeed have been shown to have a reduced risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis later in life.

Protects baby against illnesses

Breast milk is a living product containing antibodies, living cells, enzymes and hormones which boost baby’s immune system. Breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from ear infections, respiratory illness, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation. They also have a lower risk of childhood leukaemia, SIDS, diabetes, obesity and allergies later in life.

Changes as baby grows

The composition of breast milk changes with time so has the exact combination of protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and sugars needed for the baby at various stages of his growth.

Better for speech development

Many studies have found that children who were breastfed need speech therapy less often than those who were bottle-fed. Nursing takes 60 times more effort for baby than drinking from a bottle, which encourages facial formation and muscle strength which helps with later speech development.

Higher IQ

Studies have found that children who were breastfed score higher in IQ tests than children who were formula fed, even when mothers’ education and economic backgrounds were taken into account. It is thought this is because breast milk contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA) -long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that appear to support brain development. Breastfeeding Myths: There are a LOT of myths surrounding breastfeeding. Scan in this QR code using your smart phone to find out the most common ones - useful if you want to breastfeed!

Did You Know? The majority of breastfeeding problems are caused by the baby not latching on properly. (Sore nipples, baby rejecting the breast, insufficient milk). If you want to breastfeed but are experiencing problems, it is important to seek help as soon as

Con

tro Cor versy ner

Many mothers feel self-conscious breastfeeding in public places, and try to find a private place to feed their baby. Mothers who bottle feed don’t have to worry about this.

Takes less time

In the early days, bottle feeding a baby is usually quicker than breastfeeding.

Doesn’t drain mum’s energy levels

Breastfeeding burns up some of the mother’s energy and this, combined with the relaxing hormones produced when breastfeeding, can make her feel tired.

You can bond with baby whilst bottle feeding

You can have just as good a bond with your baby if you bottle feed, as you can still sit and cuddle them whilst feeding and you can bond with your baby through being a good mother.

Good if breastfeeding feels weird

It is not uncommon for new mums to feel uncomfortable with the idea of breastfeeding. Their breasts have fulfilled a very different purpose until the birth of their baby and breastfeeding can actually feel like an unnatural thing to do.

Formula contains everything a baby needs

Scientists and medical experts have spent years developing high-quality formula milks that will provide your baby with the nutrition she needs. Although there are health benefits to breastfeeding, it doesn’t mean your child is doomed if you choose to bottle feed. Millions of adults were formula fed themselves and have turned out just fine!

No mastitis or cracked nipples

Bottle feeding carries no risk of sore or cracked nipples, or mastitis - though bottle feeding mums can experience pain from the pressure build up due to unreleased milk. Bottle Feeding Information: There is minimal information available on how to bottle feed, such as sterlising and making a bottle of formula. Scan this QR Code to find out how to do it properly.

Making it

Lynne James started working for herself in 1996. Today she has the 7th most successful business within Forever Living Products in the UK, earning a six figure income, whilst working part time and flexibly around her twin sons. ‘There is nothing special about me’, she says and in fact, over the past 15 years she has helped many other people to realise their own success. Here, she shares some of her secrets of success that she usually reserves for her team. “There are no traffic jams along the extra mile” Roger Staubach One of the keys to developing a successful business is to always follow up. What does that mean? Well, it can mean many things; when giving out promotional information on your business or service, if you can, take contact details from the person or organisation who is showing interest. Call them within a week of them having that information asking them if you can help with any queries that they may have. When you

Lessons in Business The Fortune is in the Follow Up! supply a customer with a product or a service, ensure that you maintain a high level of customer service by calling your customer within a week or two to ask them if they are happy with what you have provided. Maintain good relationships with your customers by contacting them to keep them informed of new products or aspects of your service, and promote special ‘thank you’ offers to your customers periodically for their valued custom. Customers will remain loyal when they feel that they are receiving exemplary customer service. Working Out Social Media Why Facebook’s new timeline is great Most mumpreneurs use social media such as Facebook to attract and connect with customers. Shelley Pearson, from Social Intelligence, is an expert on social media and works with companies to help them make the most of these amazing 21st century tools. By now you will have experienced the new format and will have your views on it. We are very excited about this change, mainly because it gives businesses (in particular) even more brand property than ever before. Facebook’s main driving developmental goal has always been to encourage engaging content to retain your audience’s attention (and thereby keeping users logging in – 50% of Facebook’s 845+million users log in everyday).

What is Timeline? It is a much more visually impressive expression of your brand and your business’ milestones and content. You now have a larger space for branding and attracting “likers”. It literally lays your content out in a Timeline (yes – like we learnt at school), and gives you the option to backtrack business milestones

What are the Benefits of Timeline? • You can highlight and spotlight content like never before • You can now personally message your page “likers” • Visitors to your page can see which of their friends are engaging with your page ( = better connectivity)

Does it Change Anything for You (Really)? No, it doesn’t from a content perspective – but you will need to have your images redesigned, because you will no longer have a side banner or “landing tabs”. You will also need a bit of time to get used to how the format is laid out and play with the new admin panel. There are a lot of customisable elements now which are also a treat! By Shelley Pearson See Social Intelligence advert below Check out the Social Intelligence blog for any other updates you may want more information on: www.mysocialintelligence.com/blog. You can see our Timeline designed page on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/social.intelligence.

Getting Fit

made fun

Co-Active Exercise is the new buzz word that describes exercise that you can do together with your child.

Everyone knows the benefit of taking regular exercise - you feel better, look better and when you get down to it, you live longer! Exercising with your children can actually start at birth and it is rewarding both in terms of fitness and in the increased bond you will share. Here are a few Co-Active Exercise activities: Tummy Time: Babies need to spend time on their tummies. It makes them stronger and develops core muscles needed for crawling. Rolling around with you on the floor can be fun – you can do a few core or pelvic floor exercises at the same time. (exercise suggestions at www.pelvic-floor-exercises.org) Swimming: This is such a rewarding and fun activity and can be done from birth (newborns and babies under 3 months need warm pools over 32o). Being completely ‘free’ and unrestricted in the water allows young babies to exercise muscles that would not yet

24

The

be used otherwise. For older babies, it helps develop co-ordination, balance and motor skills needed for standing, jumping and skipping. Organised swimming classes like ‘Little Splashers’, teach you ways to swim with your baby. Mother and Baby Yoga: Relax and stretch with your baby! Local pregnancy and baby yoga teacher Belinda teaches some great yoga moves like ‘Baby Flying’. Find out more at www.yogaworks.me.uk. Cycling: Get on your bike with baby on a seat at the back from 6 months. Balance bikes are a great way to get them ‘cycling’ with you before they have mastered the pedals. When they are fast enough on a bike themselves, you can run and they can cycle. Walking and Running: Pre-walking babies can be in a pushchair whilst you work up a sweat. As they grow up, let them walk – just a short way at first, building to longer walks as they grow up. Look up your local ‘buggy fit’ classes like www.phys-ogue. co.uk or health visitor walks. Written by Jo Wilson at Little Splashers who runs baby and toddler swimming classes across Warwickshire. See www.littlesplashers.co.uk for more details. See advert on P. 31

Baby Massage Therapy The tender touch of Baby Massage Therapy is a lovely skill to learn, giving you and your baby time to enjoy one another. Gentle movements and nursery rhymes are incorporated into the massage to enhance the special early interactions between you and your baby which encourage early social development. The massage sequence includes simple reflexology and yoga techniques to help both you and your baby to sooth and relax. This can also help you develop your own strategies to manage conditions such as colic, constipation, teething, skin conditions and sleep. Suitable for babies aged from 4 weeks to 6 months, Baby Massage Therapy is a 5 week course of one hour weekly group sessions. Individual, one-to-one sessions can also be arranged. The class is on a Wednesday morning 10.30 - 11.30am at the Holy Trinity Church Hall, Leamington Spa. £6.00 per session, or £25.00 for the 5 week course.
