And welcome to the Spring issue of Toddle About!
Thank you so much to all of you who have been in touch since the release of the first Toddle About in January this year. We are so pleased that you have been finding it useful and entertaining - exactly what we had hoped you would say! We’re hopeful that this edition will please you just as much as the last again, we have listed all the local groups and classes we could find for you in the Daily Activity Planner from page 16 - we have almost twice as many as last time so hopefully they will help you find some fun things do with your little ones. Kumon News
Jaina Mistry started her Kumon journey studying both maths and English over six years ago when she was in Year 1. She is now in Year 8 at Rugby High School and she has achieved a real landmark in her studies – she has graduated from the Kumon English programme. This is no mean feat. The English programme has 18 levels, containing either 200 or 400 worksheets and is completed outside of school hours. This is certainly a testament to the Kumon programme’s ability to make learning fun, but it also shows the dedication Jaina and her parents had to the course. Jaina’s parents marked and graded her work on the days she studied at home and this input is vital to the success of every child’s study. The Kumon English programme has two central aims: to develop each child’s ability to read and understand a wide variety of language; and to nurture in each child a life-long habit of reading for both education and enjoyment. And Jaina is the perfect example of just how well it works. Congratulations Jaina! See advert on page 33

The Springboard to Child Confidence
By Charlotte Bedford
It probably won’t surprise you to find out that exercise is vital to the healthy development of children – research clearly shows that children can gain health benefits simply by becoming a little more active. But it’s interesting to note that the greatest benefits come from taking part in planned and structured exercise. Structured physical activity encourages children to enjoy the challenges of developing new skills and gives them the chance to experience the satisfaction of success. It is wonderful to watch their self-confidence grow as result of this, and it was this that motivated the then coach of the British Olympic Gymnastics team, Bill Cosgrave, to found Tumble Tots more than 30 years ago. Bill developed a progressive system, where we use brightly coloured equipment such as bars, trestles, balance boards, ladders, balls and hoops to encourage all aspects of physical motor education including ball handling, locomotive skill development, rhythms, manipulative skills etc. Careful study of child behaviour during their formative years shows us that children have different physical skill levels, behaviour and emotions at different ages, and structured programmes like Tumble Tots are perfectly placed to tailor their sessions to the changing stages of a child’s life. This ensures that whilst a child is challenged by the classes, they are not overstretched, or driven to do things beyond their ability level which could damage their self esteem. For the same reason, Mum or Dad (or other carer) are encouraged to accompany their child through Tumble Tots classes up to their third birthday, after which they are typically confident and independent enough to go through the sessions unaccompanied. Children in this age group start to learn listening skills and how to
Give it a go at home! You don’t have to wait for the next Tumble Tots session to see your child’s confidence grow through physical activity! Here are some really simple activities to try at home:
Balancing
Balance a bean bag or soft toy on different body parts and see how many different places you can find to balance them.
Role Play
“Let’s Pretend” is always great for kids and parents alike. Pretend to be different animals for new physical experiences -you could be a kangaroo and bounce around or be a horse and gallop!
Catch
Using a ball or balloon, see how many times you can throw it in the air before you drop it. A great way to practise counting too.
How Many Ways?
See how many different ways you can jump. Maybe you can try straight jumps, star jumps, forwards and backwards or hopping! Are there any more ways you can you find? follow instructions, in addition to tackling more difficult tasks. By incorporating actions songs and rhymes, our programme also helps with children’s language development. All young children will grow and learn best without the fear of criticism, so we foster a positive, loving and non-judgemental environment at Tumble Tots and this is something we
encourage all parents to try to do at home (though we know it can be difficult at times!) A child that has the freedom to learn from experience without the worry of judgement is one who will try new things with enthusiasm, and will keep trying till they succeed. It is this success upon success that builds confidence and the element of fun keeps them coming back for more!

Spotlight on Morag Larsen Bringing Kooch to Life So what’s your story? I moved to Northampton when I was 3 and still live here, now with my partner and two children, Hannah (4) and Hal (2½). I graduated in Product Design and most recently worked designing Children’s Playgrounds for Kompan. Here I learnt an awful lot about designing from a child’s perspective. When I had a baby I suddenly became aware of the limited availability of interesting or unique clothing for children in Northampton and we began to buy most of our baby clothes on-line, brightly coloured and full of bold patterns and prints. As Hannah wore each item the response from people was of surprise and delight at the designs which planted that business seed! Several brainstorming sessions later, we hit on the name Kooch taken from the ‘koochikoo’ phrase.
We get a lot of our inspiration from observing how our own children perceive the world around them; from the attraction

Advice for others? Although life will get in the way, you should always keep hold of the following three things: 1. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t achieve what you want to every day. 2. Trust your instincts a little more than other people tell you to. 3. Be honest to family and friends about how you are feeling if you need support.
How can we see and order your products? All our products are available on our website www.kooch.co.uk and we will be exhibiting at various shows throughout the year so keep checking the website or sign up for our updates if you want to come to see Kooch. See advert p.29.

The Problem with Praise
T
he last decade has seen our book shelves and TV screens hit by an explosion of self-help books and programmes, with the arena of parenting being perhaps one of the most well-covered. Gone are the days when we could say, “You don’t get a manual with one of these!” We now have access to the teachings of many an expert telling us how to raise our children to be contented, smart, and well-behaved little angels. We can learn a lot of things from these books, however parenting is far from an exact science and it is not uncommon for the experts’ advice to conflict, which can sometimes leave us feeling more confused than when we started!
One controversial theory that has gained considerable momentum and support in recent years is the idea that praising our children could actually do more harm than good. With parents typically moving away from the more negative forms of discipline, such as smacking, praise has become an increasingly common method of guiding our children. However, research suggests that we have gone too far and that praise has downsides of its own. Now this puts me in a sticky situation, because I praise my children a lot. I believe that if I tell my daughters that they are clever or talented, then they will gain confidence from my confidence in
them. It will boost their self-image and encourage them to tackle more challenging things in the future that will help them to learn and grow even further. Or at least, that’s what I used to believe... now I’m not so sure. So, imagining that some of you might also be confused about the debate surrounding praise, I decided to make it the topic of this issue’s Controversy Corner and have summarised the arguments for and against overleaf. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this topic, so please come online and leave a comment at www.toddleabout.co.uk.

The Prosecution Praise gives the impression of conditional love Of course all parents love their children unconditionally. However if we give approval and smiles only when our child does something we approve of, and frown and punish when they do something we don’t like, children may come to believe their parents’ love is dependent on their good behaviour and achievements. The fear of losing a parent’s love through making a bad decision or getting something wrong can create insecurity and loss of self-confidence. Praise using labels creates impossible standards Phrases such as ‘Good girl’, ‘Clever boy’ and ‘You’re so talented!’ are an easy way to express our pleasure in our children’s achievements, but such labels set high standards that are impossible to maintain all the time and can create the pressure to be perfect. This can cause our children to become reluctant to take on new challenges as they worry about failing and disappointing their parents. Labels also fail to demonstrate to children the real reasons for their success (such as perseverance) so they don’t learn how to replicate their success in future. Praise makes children less self motivated Babies are born with a natural love of learning they throw themselves into new situations and delight in the experiences life has to offer. When parents praise their child, they are actually creating a new reward for certain behaviours. In time, children may learn to do things in order to receive praise instead of doing them for the intrinsic reward of the enjoyment of the task. This can reduce a child’s inclination to start and complete a task on their own as they become dependent on having someone else there to constantly praise and motivate them. Praise actually reduces self-confidence In praising a child, we impose our personal judge-
14
The Praise
ment of what is “right” or “good” on them. If our opinion is different from their own (they might not like the drawing that we loved so much...), then they may lose confidence in their own judgements. This can lead to them being afraid to voice their own opinion or to try new things for fear of being wrong or doing them incorrectly. Praise doesn’t teach moral values When it comes to moral behaviours (e.g. sharing, being kind, saying “thank you” etc), we want our children to behave in these ways because they are considering the feelings of the person they are interacting with not because we will pat them on the head for doing so. If a child only shares because of the approval they receive from their parent, they are unlikely to do the same when no-one’s looking. Praise can lead to resentment We often use praise to encourage our children to behave in a way that we want them to. By praising the behaviour we like we hope it will make our children want to do it again. This in itself is a very subtle form of manipulation. When children feel manipulated, they can start to feel out of control which can lead to resentful and rebellious behaviour in an effort to re-assert themselves. Too much praise makes it hard to make friends Excessive praise can give a child a false sense of superiority which can lead to arrogance, and negatively impact their social skills and the ability to make friends.

Debate
Praise increases self-confidence Research has shown that praise improves the way our children feel about themselves. This then raises their self-esteem and gives them more confidence in themselves. This leads to more successes which in turn increases their levels of confidence and selfesteem further, creating an upward spiral. Praise is a positive way to guide children In our efforts to guide our children, we often tell them what not to do, and point out what they have done wrong. Many of us punish our children when they misbehave. This constant fault-finding can give a child the feeling that they can’t get anything right, thus quickly reducing their self-esteem and confidence, and creating resentment. Praising good behaviour and catching them doing things right is a positive way of giving feedback and guiding a child whilst also maintaining healthy selfrespect and parent-child relationships.
Ways to Encourage without using Praise To retain the positive aspects of praise and lose the negative ones, many experts recommend using encouragement as a way to guide our children - i.e. praise without the judgement, focused on effort rather than results. In general, you should maintain eye contact when delivering encouragement, speak with sincere emotion and feeling, and be as specific as possible. Ending with a physical touch of some sort will reinforce the message. • Minimise the use of labels e.g. “Good girl”, “Clever boy”.
Praise gives children a morale boost Praise is encouraging, up-lifting and energising. When the going gets tough, children (and adults!) sometimes need other people to remind them that they do have what it takes to succeed and that everything will work out OK. Hearing another child receive praise can also provide a valuable form of motivation for a child to try harder themselves.
• Celebrate achievements with genuine, spontaneous words of appreciation and enjoyment, rather than by expressing personal judgements e.g. “You did it!” “Thank you!” “What a nice surprise!” “How wonderful!”
Praise is a celebration! Praise is often the genuine expression of our delight in the behaviour and achievements of our children. A spontaneous cry of ‘Well done!” or “That’s wonderful!” is a natural way to celebrate with our children, and it creates a beautiful bonding moment that should be treasured and enjoyed.
• State the intrinsic rewards that come from an activity so your child is aware of the consequences and develops self-motivation. E.g. “Hooray! Tidying up has given us more space to play new games!”
• Instead of saying things as a fact, state them as your opinion, e.g. “I think that’s a beautiful painting!” • Replace praise with observation and description, e.g. “You built a tower with your bricks!”
• Explain how certain actions make others feel, to encourage empathy and intrinsic motivations. e.g. “Look at Oliver’s smile! You made him feel happy when you shared your ball with him”.
