CHILDREN’S GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT AN INSIGHT FROM TOP ORTHOPAEDIC PAEDIATRIC PHYSIOTHERAPIST As parents, we often wonder whether our children are developing normally and with so much information readily available, it is difficult to know the most trustworthy source.

the world! It can, however, become worrying when your child hurts themselves, particularly if it happens on a regular basis. Frequent falling is a common complaint in orthopaedic clinic and can be caused by poor balance or weak muscles. Falling is, however, normal for toddlers whilst they quite literally “find their feet” with walking, but this would usually improve by around age 5.

In Paediatric Orthopaedics, we see a wide variation of what is and isn’t considered normal, and I’ve given you a taster of some of things we see below.

LEGS

– the appearance of children’s legs can occasionally cause angst in parents of young children.

Legs can appear bowed or knock-kneed, feet turned in or perhaps one leg longer than the other. All these appearances can be considered normal at different ages and stages of development. Children’s walking (gait) can sometimes look awkward or clumsy too, and we see some children who have a preference to walk on their toes rather than on a flat foot.

CHANGE – Children’s bodies are constantly

changing – in seemingly no time, your new baby becomes a bustling toddler, jumping in puddles!

Positional talipes in a newborn (a flexible deformity of the feet from being confined inside the womb), is a great example of a condition which just needs time for change - over a period of a few weeks, it simply resolves on its own without any need for treatment.

DISCOMFORT/PAIN

HYPERMOBILITY

– Refers to how flexible joints are - it is normal for children under 5 to be bendy or flexible (compare any parent and young child attempting to reach their toes to their mouth!).

Most children have flat feet up until around age 6, because of their natural joint laxity and underdeveloped muscles. Being flexible has its benefits, particularly in activities such as gymnastics, but it is also important to allow children to build muscle strength through activities such as swimming, climbing (e.g. steps), cycling in the older child and walking.

INJURY – As parents we spend a lot of time

mitigating risk, but occasionally accidents happen, particularly with young children who are exploring

– Children sometimes complain of pain, but it is not always clear why.

In the younger child where they don’t have the understanding or communication skills, pain may be expressed as a reluctance to participate in certain activities or walk for any distance (however this could also represent a strong mindset!). “Growing pains” can be quite common, which can be caused by muscle and bone growth imbalances resulting in tight muscles.

Mother’s Day Handprint Bouquet

Warm a mother’s heart this Mother’s Day with this adorable handmade gift.

METHOD:

1. Glue the white paper in the centre of the coloured construction paper.

2. Draw an outline of a flower pot at the bottom of the white paper.

3. Make pools of the coloured paint on the paper plates and set them aside.

Bringing up toddlers is hard work for any parent, but when one person is caring for a child 24/7 it’s not surprising if they end up feeling emotionally and physically worn out. by Kat Seney-Williams STICK TO A ROUTINE Create a regular routine. This not only makes life easier because we are better organised, but it’s also incredibly beneficial for our toddlers. The predictability of knowing what will happen every day gives them stability and a sense of security.

When we are co-parenting, it isn’t always easy to keep to the same routine in both homes, but aim to do this whenever possible. It’s also helpful if the contact our toddlers have with their other parent is regular and consistent.

PLAN AHEAD Keep your stress levels to a minimum by preparing in advance – e.g. laying out clothes the night before and packing the nappy bag with everything you need when you are out. Ordering groceries online, planning menus for the week ahead, and bulk cooking meals to freeze and use on busier days will also save us time and stress. Some people find it useful to write themselves a daily to-do list, putting the most important things at the top and gradually working through it. (Don’t worry if you can’t get everything done, though – there’s always tomorrow!).

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY Our toddlers need to know that when we say no, we mean it. This can be harder to do for single parents because there’s no one to back us up. When we’re exhausted and our toddler is whining or making a

scene, it’s all-too tempting to simply give in. But if we don’t mean what we say, our toddlers will never know whether or not they can believe us.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Don’t be too proud to accept help if it’s offered.

You are only one person and no one is superhuman.

If family or friends offer to help babysit or run errands, take them up on it. And don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Neglecting your own wellbeing isn’t good for your toddler or yourself, so try to eat healthily, exercise whenever possible, get enough sleep and find ways to give yourself some ‘me time’.

GET SOME PERSPECTIVE I’m often asked the question, “Is it because I’m a single parent?” It’s borne out of a fear that any issues we’re experiencing with our children are because we are raising them alone. But my answer is always the same: all parents face challenging issues with their kids at one time or another.

Toddler tantrums are normal! We’ll make mistakes and have bad days just like any other parent. It’s OK if the Duplo is scattered all over the floor some days, and it doesn’t matter if you end up cooking beans on toast for tea for the third time that week.

None of us is the perfect parent, and you are doing so much better than you think you are … I promise.

PANCAKE DAY - TUESDAY 25 FEBRUARY

PINK PANCAKES

Delicious and healthy homemade pink pancakes that are perfect to make for breakfast this Pancake Day or indeed any day of the year if you love pink!

Ingredients:

• 175 g plain flour • 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch) • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1 beetroot cooked, not in vinegar • 300 ml dairy-free milk (I used oat)

• 2 tbsp vegetable oil

- plus more for frying

• 1 tbsp maple syrup • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1 tsp vanilla extract

1 Place all the ingredients in a blender and whizz until smooth.

4 Turn the pancake over with a spatula and repeat on the other side. Don’t be tempted to turn the heat up or your pancakes will turn brown.

SUITABLE FOR VEGANS !

2 Heat a little oil in a frying pan over a low-medium heat and add a spoonful of the batter. Tilt the pan to allow the batter to spread out a little until you have the size and shape that you want.

5 Keep warm in a low oven while you repeat with the remaining pancakes.

3 Cook for a couple of minutes until you can see bubbles appear on the surface of the pancake.

6 Serve with maple syrup, fresh raspberries and yoghurt, or your favourite toppings.

Postnatal Depression:

My St ory

More than 10% of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression, and yet it is poorly understood by many of us.

Even mums that are suffering might not realise they are experiencing something more than the ‘baby blues’.

This is Kate’s story.

How could this be happening to me? I had worked with children since the age of 16, and my dream in life was to be a wife and mother. At the age of 30, I was recently married and pregnant soon after, so why did I feel like life was throwing me a rough deal?

Why did no one understand how I was feeling?

From start to a much earlier finish than expected, I didn’t enjoy my pregnancy. I had a few hiccoughs during it along with work stresses, so I began maternity leave 12 weeks before my due date, and during my last week at work, my waters broke. I spent the night in hospital and, after an internal exploration, a doctor discovered I had a cord prolapse. Within 30 minutes, my daughter was born by emergency caesarean section.

I woke up from general anaesthetic and was told the baby was a girl. She weighed 2lb 14oz, and was being ventilated, but doing well. I was in a side room by myself on the antenatal ward with just one photo of our baby. I felt sorry for myself with stitches, drips and drains, and this was where the negative feelings took hold. That evening, I was taken in a wheelchair to see my baby in the SCBU. My husband pushed me up to the open incubator but, seeing her for the first time, I felt absolutely nothing. I pretended I was delighted to see her.

After six days in hospital, I was allowed home. I made myself visit the hospital every day to see our baby, even though I didn’t want to go. I tried talking to

my husband and family, but they didn’t understand how I felt. After five weeks in hospital, my daughter was strong enough to come home but I wasn’t ready. How would I cope?

I hoped that when it came to the time our baby should have been born, 12 weeks later, I would have a wonderful bonding experience, but that didn’t happen, and after a phone call with my health visitor, I burst into tears. It was arranged that I would have a volunteer come to the house once per week for a couple of hours. The lady who visited was amazing; she would sit and listen to me, or help around the house, and she understood how I was feeling because she had also had postnatal depression. The sessions lasted for a couple of months, and they helped so much. There were still tears, but I could eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel. It took about nine months before I began to enjoy seeing my baby’s progress.

After four years, I was ready to try for another baby.

He was only three weeks early, and I had two days of the ‘Baby Blues’. My family was complete.

If you think you may be suffering from postnatal depression, it’s important to tell your midwife, health visitor or doctor how you feel. They won’t judge you – they understand that depression is a mental health condition and can help you to get the right treatment and support.
