Todd Tomasella Todd Tomasella: Luke 24:35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread. As Christians, we no longer know Jesus in the flesh. 2 Cor 5:16. We know Him as the Christ, as His risen Person, Body, Soul and Spirit. The Lord is the Spirit. We are enabled to see His loving and gentle face thru the cross. 2 Cor 3:17; 4:6.
After His death, the risen Christ joined two men walking down the road to Emmaus. They did not know Him though they had been follow ers of Jesus. Luke 24:16. But their eyes were HOLDEN (still bound in slavery) that they should not know Him. It was only after He BROKE bread and distributed it to them that they were able to recognize Him. Their eyes and ears had to be delivered from slavery to Satan’s deception. Rev 12:9. Until that moment a veil had remained over their eyes. Satan had disguised himself as God in many Old Testament passages. 2 Cor 11:13-15.
Luke 24:35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how HE WAS KNOWN TO THEM IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD. This “breaking of bread signifies the broken body of Christ at Calvary. His distribution of the broken pieces of bread to the two men signifies our participation with Christ in the brokenness of His death. We have been and continue to be crucified with Christ. Gal 2:20. We are partakers or participants with Christ in His cross. 1 Cor 11:26. Only then can we truly and intimately know the Lord.
We cannot truly realize the risen Christ until we undergo a death with Him. Rom 6:3-6. Knowing He died for my sins is true but too shallow. We must die the death, too. Thru this experience of His death we are freed from our slavery to sin and the law in order to really know Christ intimately. Until that moment our eyes are bound in slavery and restrained from knowing the only true God and His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. We can not fully realize the purity of God’s character of unconditional love, or His humble, meek, gentle, vulnerable, lamb-like, dovelike, single and simple personality.
We remain blinded by Satan and have received no revelation of who God really is, the One Jesus came to tell us about. We see God as a wrathful, killing, threatening, retaliating, vengeful, punishing judge or cop in the sky just waiting to zap us for our sin. We see Him just as the Pharisees did and as Saul did before Saul was converted and became Paul. Somehow, we can’t really trust a vengeful wrathful “God” like that. Paul wrote about people back then who read Moses and the Old Testament but were totally blinded to underlying truth there, that God is a God who loves us unconditionally and sent His Son to tell about Him and then to die for us and rescue us from our deception under sin and the law.
2 Corinthians3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: V14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. V15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
V16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
V17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. V18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Satan has used sin and the law of Moses to blind Christianity to the message of the cross and to who God and His Son really are. But through the cross, we are freed from (Moses) law of sin and death. We are thereby given new eyes to see and ears to hear. Rom 8:1-4.
2 Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. V5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. After the breaking of the bread in Like 24, Jesus opened to the two men the real but hidden truths of Old Testament, things that they had never seen before. Their hearts then burned within them! And it came to pass, as He sat at meat with them, He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He OPENED to us the scriptures. And they ROSE UP the same hour . . . Luke 24:30-33.
Bottom line truth: We cannot see, know or hear from Christ unless and until we are crucified and risen with Christ becoming dead to sin and the law. Rom 6 and 7. We can only know Him IN THE BREAKING of the bread, a BROKENNESS that brings us to a helpless humility, a surrender and a yielding over of the control of our minds and lives to God. This yielding is our death with Christ. Rom 12:1-2. In this we eat His flesh and drink His blood. John 6:5256. Satan’s veil of deceit is then torn from top to bottom revealing the true reality of the loving nature of God. We can only know God through our brokenness! We can only
understand the Old Testament by being crucified and raised up with Christ.
