WH Y GO WIDER?

?

OR In the recent years rims and tires have become wider and wider. New technologies and materials have allowed construction of wide rims and tires that are still light enough for performance use. So how wide is really better? The answer to this quest-

BETTER TIRE SUPPORT... ... because the tires get more of a square shape rather than a balloon shape. Therefore it is much less likely to get tire roll when cornering and traversing.

.

ion is as individual as your riding style and terrain. As wide as possible without be coming sluggish for your taste would be the closest you can come to an answer. Either way, we offer all the options for you to find out how wide is better.

narrow rim

wide rim

MORE COMFORT ... ... because the lower pressure allowed by the better tire support reduces the spring force in the tire, therefore making your «tire suspension» softer.

MORE TRACTION ... ... because the shape of the tires’ contact patch changes, allowing for more knobs to grip the ground and for a greater contact area of the tire in the direction in which cornering forces occur.

BPM

EXCELLENCE IN WHEEL BUILDING When it comes to the performance of a wheelset there are two main factors to be considered. The quality of the components and the quality of the wheel building process. Known for our benchmark-setting components, we have also invested heavily in the performance of our wheel building process over the last decade. It is the combination of these two factors which ensure the outstanding quality of DT Swiss wheels today. GREAT EXPERTISE IN WHEEL BUILDING Marcel Waldmann and his team of wheel building professionals are the people behind those superb products. The great expertise of these guys, is the key feature of BPM department. When it comes to the art of wheel building, they are as close to perfection as it can get. Working with highest precision and the smallest possible tolerances, which no machine will ever reach, they have the experience of thousands of wheels built up over the past ten years.

BPM is an acronym for «Biel Performance Manufacturing» our wheel building department at the headquarters in Biel, Switzerland. It is right here where the magic of DT Swiss wheel building happens.

Numerous world champion titles, stages at the Tour de France and even Olympic medals have been won by DT Swiss athletes in the last few years. All of these athletes rode on wheels, which have been handcrafted in BPM in Switzerland.

The feedback of these world-class athletes and the close cooperation with our sponsored teams is a vital part of the wheel development, as well as the wheel building process in BPM. Being able to build up prototypes and special racing wheelsets with different combinations of components gives us the chance to develop products, which are convincing with performance out there on the road and the trails. And it doesn’t matter if you are Nino Schurter or Daniela Ryf fighting for world champion titles, enjoying your after-work rides with colleagues, or going all out at the local club ride – the superior performance of DT Swiss wheels will delight every rider.

21

22

MTB

BPM

HIGH QUALITY WORLDWIDE All the processes and methods we are using in BPM are transferred to our serial production too. With regular instruction for all wheel building employees worldwide, BPM is also the heart of our internal training program, ensuring that our serial production offers consistent, outstanding quality.

PERFORMANCE

HANDCRAFTED

HIGH-END

From prototype samples for our internal testing lab, to customer first deliveries and sponsored athletes wheelsets, approximately 200 wheels are built up each week in BPM. Precise work flow and optimized work stations ensure a smooth process. From the unique oven for the waterslide decals, the precise truing tools, computer aided tolerance control or even the tubeless tape machine, each and every step in the wheel building process gets optimized continuously. Still the handcrafted wheel building experience of Marcel and his team is critical to the quality of a BPM built wheelset. BPM has one primary target: To make sure that you guys – our customers – can rely on high-quality DT Swiss wheelsets, no matter if you are shredding your favorite trails, flying down epic mountain roads or exploring the finest gravel paths.

FREERIDE — SEND IT, PIN IT The bike industry has had its trouble to define the term «freeride». We don't care because when you are airing out of that berm you built or gapping gaps on the DH track, so big they could be a feature at Rampage, you don't care either. What you do care about is a set of strong and reliable wheels that will also accelerate with confidence out of the startgate. And that we have covered with our FR wheels.

R ATCHET SYSTEM

RATCHET SYSTEM The Ratchet System has earned a legendary reputation for quality and performance. Why you ask? Firstly all teeth of the ratchets engage simultaneously every time, creating a large contact surface for high durability and positive engagement. The press-fit assembly of the hubs allows for service work to be done within

minutes and makes the hub convertible into many drop out standards. The noncontact seal system and high-precision assembly guarantee that all of the rider’s energy is transformed into forward motion. Finally the continuous weight optimization has turned our Ratchet System into the racing classic that it is.

Revolution is defined as a fundamental change, taking place in a relatively short period of time, rising up in revolt against the current status quo. Evolution is defined as a gradual, peaceful, progressive change or development. Combining the characteristics of both revolution and evolution our roadrevolution18 campaign is unique above all.

AERO #FLATOUTFAST Aerodynamics describe the interaction of an object with its surrounding medium: air. To us aero means minimal drag in all conditions, allowing you to go faster than ever, without any compromises in weight, stiffness and braking performance. We want to create the most efficient and complete system.

A

AERO

8

THE AERO REVOLUTION When setting ourselves the goal of developing benchmark-setting aero wheels, it was clear we needed to team up with the industry leader in aerodynamics. After all, DT Swiss is an industry leader

when it comes to wheel manufacturing, so we wanted to work with the absolute best. Being close both geographically and regarding our mindset, with SWISS SIDE we have found the ideal partner.

With over 50 years of Formula 1 experience the Swiss Side team is revolutionizing cycling aerodynamics by bringing previously unseen development techniques to the cycling industry in order to maximize the performance of cycling products. Contrary to popular opinion, when it comes to aerodynamic optimization of wheelsets there is still a lot of potential for improvement. While everyone else is discussing about the optimization of the rim shape we took a far more holistic view, looking at

how every component of the wheel influences its aero performance. The development target of our new AERO wheel lineup has been clear: Maximum support of the complete system of the rider and his bike through low drag number and – most importantly – a linear and predictable side force in windy conditions to secure a better handling while riding in the aero position. On top of all that, the wheels need to create a sailing effect improving forward thrust in crosswind conditions.

A

CFD OPTIMIZATION To meet our targets some key factors that influence aerodynamic performance had to be considered. An important first step is the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation, which shows the airflow behavior on the wheel model – fed by real world

Slipstream tire leading area

data - and all forces acting on the 3D model. Resulting from the CFD simulation the most promising wheel geometry is then built up to a prototype, which is not rideable yet but ready for wind tunnel testing.

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH How do the prototypes perform and what about the competitor comparison? When taking a look at the data of our new ARC 1100 DICUTÂŽ wheels, it gets clear that we did not only meet the development target but clearly set a new benchmark for aerodynamic performance. All three rim depths in their rim brake and disc brake iterations perform brilliantly with low drag number across the entire yaw range and a linear, smooth steering behavior. Find out about the numbers on the following page:

BENCHMARK COMPARISON

No matter which rim depth you choose, the ARC 1100 DICUT® line up with its three rim depths gives you the perfect option depending on your demand. Independent of the rim depth all wheels have a very low base drag level with a delta of only 0.4 watt at 0° yaw angle. The ARC 1100 DICUT® 62 & the ARC 1100 DICUT® 80 even

How fast are the ARC 1100 DICUT® wheels when compared to the industry benchmark? We can proudly say: They are the new benchmark! Comparing the ARC 1100 DICUT® 80 with the industry benchmark Zipp 808 NSW we notice a one watt shift across the entire yaw range which

create negative drag and show the desired sailing effect at higher yaw angles above 12°. The ARC 1100 DICUT® 48 is the perfect wheel for gusty wind conditions creating very low steering moment at higher yaw angles and having a smooth and predictable stall behavior.

forms as good as humanly possible at a given moment in human and technological development. Aero+ is based on three pillars: DRAG, HANDLING & EFFICIENCY

DRAG Wind is anything but unidirectional. A lot of factors have to be considered when trying to optimize a road wheel. Although the rider is responsible for the majority of drag, it's the wheel aerodynamics which can have the biggest influence on reducing the drag. The ERC 1100 DICUT® has super low drag numbers at all relevant yaw angles. Best of all it is right in the ballpark with the competition both when run with 25 mm and 28 mm tires.

HANDLING The complete bike only accounts for 25% of your overall drag, and the wheels are only 8% of that number, while the rider weights in with the other 75%. So why is the wheel important? In order to stay aero in the first place, you have to stay comfy no matter the riding situation, because only then will you be able to keep an aero position, which affects those big 75%. And this is why the handling characteristics of a wheel are key. The ERC 1100 DICUT® is the best handling wheel in wind situations commonly found on the road. This is true independent of the tire width you chose to ride.

EFFICIENCY Comfort, grip and rolling resistance all define your efficiency. Wheels have a direct and important influence on how the tires will perform in all three of those categories. During the development of the ERC 1100 DICUT® we paid close attention to these factors as they play an integral role in the AERO+ concept, because you can only stay aero, when you stay in control.

MIS SION HYBRID

RIDE HARDER

DT Swiss is on a mission, a mission to bring eMTB riders the components they need. The people behind this mission are people who know, understand and most importantly, RIDE eMTBs. So go ahead and discover our understanding of what eMTBs are here for and discover the technologies we apply to make it happen.

3

4

MIS SION HYBRID

RIDE FURTHER

FURTHER HARDER SH A RE

250 watts of extra power broaden the horizon even for the fittest of us: Energy sapping ground and snowy rides just get a whole lot more fun. And what used to be an epic ride turns into a two hour experience condensing the vertical gained, the trails ridden and the vertical crushed. It’s really like riding TO HEAVEN AND BACK.

Going on your familiar rides with the power of an olympic XC athlete lets you start to see the terrain with different eyes: Reverse the direction and you notice riding up trails is a lot of fun. Riding a root carpet at twice the speed, that long, painful push up the baby head gravel road to get to ride that secret trail? Now a game of navigating the obstacles, it allows you to TURN PAIN INTO FUN.

THE RIDE

RIDE HARDER

Beyond bringing new people into the wonderful sport that mountainbiking is, eMTBs allow die hard athletes to share their riding adventures with their partners, their kids and virtually anyone who ever dreamed to go fast and far. Seasoned mountainbikers starting to feel their age continue to do their demanding loops. And riders which have to carry many hats in real life can still join their wednesday night group ride. So yes, eMTBs really are making sure that EVERYONE ROCKS AND ROLLS.

WHAT’S THE MISSION?

MISSION HYBRID

WHAT THAT MEANS FOR COMPONENTS An eMTB is much like a german sportscar: You expect it to work flawlessly all the time: When you hop in for a sporty summer drive where you slam through the gears AND when you commmute in it during winter, just happy that the heating works. Fact is, you want it to perform AND be reliable. This is just what our HYBRID wheels deliver. Follow us on the next pages to find out just how they do it.

PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY ARE KEY

10

MIS SION HYBRID

THE L AB

The lab is where our HYBRID components are put to the test. Here we keep refining and finding new test procedures to simulate what happens on the trail as accurately as possible. All with one goal: To make your wheels even better and develop them even faster than today. Over the twenty years DT Swiss has been developping wheels, we have gathered an unparalleled testing know how. With this know how and a tightly knit test rider group, we are able to design a wheel just right for its intended use. By veryfing and knowing the loads occurring in real world riding, our in house wheel testing equipment can quickly go through a wheels whole lifetime to double check its performance for the intended use. Still many iterations are needed to find that perfect strength to weight ratio for a given appli-

MANAGER PROTOTYPING TESTING

cation. To do these product development iterations, you need the ability to quickly prototype products. We have set up a global network of inhouse and external specialists that make this happen. Enter Philipp LĂźdi: It's the network he built and is leading. Being a die hard mountain biker himself, he also makes sure that the wheel prototypes that are tortured on the test benches, also hit the dirt as quickly as possible. Because in the end, what a rider feels through his arms, legs and butt is what ultimately counts.

TESTING REINFORCED

WEIGHT OPTIMIZED

TECHNOLOGY

When testing to our set HYBRID standards, we found two things: 1. The spoke contact area needs to be strengthened, 2. There are areas that can be kept just as lightweight as on regular MTB rims. These findings have led us to optimize the profile of our HYBRID rims for weight in non critical areas and reinforce them where it counts. KG Classified for a 150 kg system weight they are available in 25, 30 and 35 mm widths for increased traction and comfort.

Putting our HYBRID hub prototypes through the rigorous testing procedure, it showed that many components were strong 24T enough for the high demands, but only just strong enough. Therefore we took many small measures to strengthen the whole hub system. As a result, HYBRID hubs feature increased wall thicknesses in the oversized shell, high load axles and oversized spoke 24T interfaces. This is complimented by new,

Via this clever optimization we have achieved a 150 kg system weight classification with only a minimal weight increase compared to same level MTB hubs.
