THE COMPOSITES EXPERTS All carbon fiber is not created equal. There is a reason carbon fiber is commonly referred to as “composite”—it is comprised of several elements including yarns, fiber and resin. Additionally, manufacturing techniques vary wildly across the industry. Think of composites like flour, eggs and sugar. Now think of Easton’s carbon fiber like a wedding cake. Anyone can mix-up the ingredients and bake a cake. But do you want just any cake at your wedding? Professional chefs know that everything needs to be perfect to make a great cake (from the ingredients to the mixing to the timing and temperature). Easton’s industry-leading composites are a product of the best materials, the most elaborate production techniques and stringent testing. Additionally, Easton owns a leading-edge composite production facility in Tijuana, Mexico. This 65,000-square foot facility (what we call EMX) is just over the border from San Diego, California, allowing our design team to easily and routinely check production. Controlling an entire production facility allows Easton to develop new designs faster and produce much higher quality products with more innovative materials and processes than would otherwise be possible. Easton’s testing labs offer yet another competitive advantage. Our testing area occupies an entire floor of our Scotts Valley, California, headquarters as well as large spaces in a number of Easton’s other facilities. ROAD WHEEL TECHNOLOGY THE DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

100% HAND BUILT & ACOUSTICALLY TUNED Every Easton wheel—from the entry-level EA50 to the top-tier EC90 Aero—is 100-percent hand built and acoustically tuned by Easton-trained builders. Wheel building is as much art as it is science. High, uniform spoke tension is necessary to build strong wheels that stay true. Nothing does this better than experienced human hands and ears. It’s a painstaking process. This systematic approach to precision tensioning and truing sets the standard in the industry. PREMIUM SPOKES Using only top quality spokes is critical for our high tension wheel builds. We only use premium quality stainless steel spokes from Sapim™. Most of our wheels use straight-pull spokes, and every wheel gets a specific spoke type depending on intended use: straight gauge, double butted, triple butted and bladed. The smallest technical detail— like a spoke nipple—can literally make or break a wheel. This is why Easton pays close attention to even the smallest components and design elements of our wheels, even on the entry level models. We design our own hubs, rims and nipples, and use the best components available.

THERMATEC™ ThermaTec is a proprietary brake track surface treatment that improves braking performance and reduces the effect of heat on carbon sidewalls. While most carbon wheels perform poorly under braking, Easton wheels with ThermaTec have braking consistency and modulation on par with aluminum wheels, and unsurpassed strength and durability in a carbon clincher. ThermaTec has made the EC90 SL and EC90 Aero clincher wheels the favorites of editors from Bicycling, CyclingNews, VeloNews and WIRED magazines. “The braking performance of Easton’s new EC90 SL is the best we’ve ever experienced in a carbon clincher” – Bicycling Magazine. CERAMIC BEARINGS Easton’s R4 SL hubs—utilized on all EC90 wheels and EA90 SLX wheels—roll on premium, grade-3 hybrid ceramic, sealed cartridge bearings. Ceramic bearings roll more efficiently and last longer than standard, steel bearings. This difference will keep you rolling faster for longer.

R4 TT FRONT HUB There’s more to aerodynamics than tall rim profiles. Our R4 TT hub—utilized on the EC90 TT (90-millimeter), EC90 TT (56-millimeter) and EA90 TT front wheels—features unique, wing-shaped end caps to improve aerodynamics. Additionally the hub flanges are closer together (effectively narrowing the frontal area). Thanks to these features the R4 TT hub’s profile is reduced by 50-percent, helping these wheels cut through wind faster with no ill effects in crosswinds. VARIABLE NIPPLE BED TECHNOLOGY This proprietary Easton process places more material where it’s needed to support spoke tension. Variable Nipple Bed Technology allows us to create an aerodynamic, deep dish rim—like the 90-millimeter-deep EC90 TT—that weighs less than some traditional box-section hoops!

THREADED EYELET / NIPPLE To create an airtight, tubeless seal, the EA90 RT and new EA90 XD wheels are outfitted with our patented threaded eyelet/nipple system. This revolutionary system allows the spoke to be attached to the rim without penetrating the tire bed, eliminating the need for a rim strip. The secret is the nipple, with threads on the outside which thread into the eyelet in the rim, and on the inside which thread onto the spoke. The threads are left hand on the outside of the nipple, and right hand on the inside, this allows the wheel to be trued like a normal wheel, without the need for a custom spoke or spoke wrench.

Leave it to Easton—the composites experts—to create the first zero compromise carbon fiber road clincher. The EC90 SL offers the very best braking performance in carbon rims. Period. We did it with the help of our exclusive ThermaTec™ brake track treatment, available only on Easton’s composite clincher wheels. ThermaTec brake track treatment provides smooth, easily-modulated braking power and reduces heat build-up under heavy braking. Of course ThermaTec is only one highlight of the EC90 SL. The 38-millimeter deep carbon rim is molded into its final shape in one process, ensuring superior strength and impact resistance. The EC90 SL is the only composite clincher rim to survive tests in our laboratory for impact and fatigue resistance as well as our brake track torture test, handling temperatures up to 500-degrees Fahrenheit. The EC90 TT is the lightest 90-millimeter-deep wheelset on the market. It’s the result of our drive to create the fastest wheel possible for our sponsored road and triathlon racers. Years of obsessive refinement and careful engineering have resulted in our lightest aluminum wheelset to date. At just 1,398-grams the EA90 SLX is perfect for any ride or race that features significant changes in elevation. Despite its low mass, this featherweight packs all the dependability and durability that are the hallmarks of any Easton product. These wheels are wicked light, thanks to Easton’s exclusive Gen 4 front and rear-specific rims. Gen 4 rims use Easton’s premium EA6X alloy and are fabricated with a reduced wall thickness, saving at least 61-grams over previous versions. NEW ZEALAND ADVENTURE

AN UNLIKELY CAST OF RIDERS ROAD TRIPS THROUGH NZ’S SOUTH ISLAND Normally freeriders and downhillers don’t mix. The two groups of riders have a mutual respect for each other, and they have a lot in common (on paper, at least), but normally they travel in different circles. We set out to change that this past winter by inviting Easton’s top freerider, Canadian Graham Agassiz, to ride with a few of the world’s best downhill racers in the mountain bike paradise of New Zealand. We had a motley crew of characters on our voyage, including 10time DH world champion, Frenchman Nicolas Vouilloz; world cup DH stars Sam Blenkinsop and Cameron Cole; Caleb Smith of Spoke Magazine; ace photographer Haruki Noguchi: as well as Dylan Dunkerton and Kyle Norbraten of the Coastal Crew. We hit some of the South Island’s best destinations including Nelson and Christchurch, we did some downhilling, some trail riding and built some slopestyle-sized booters. The trip was a rare opportunity to see the contrasting styles of the best riders in mountain biking. Where Blenkinsop powers and thunders down the trail, Vouilloz is light and smooth and doesn’t look like he’s going fast. Agassiz, on the other hand, pops off of everything, slides around every turn and laughs the entire time. Every rider was outside their comfort zone at some point during the trip (Aggy bonked pretty hard on a six-hour trail ride), but the riders learned a ton from each other and went their separate ways with a newfound respect. EYELET / NIPPLE Easton’s tubeless Gen 5 tubeless rims—featured on EC90 XC, EA90 XC, EA70 XCT, EA90 RT, EA90 XD and Haven wheels—utilize our patented threaded eyelet and nipple system. This revolutionary system allows the spoke to be attached to the rim without penetrating the tire bed, eliminating the need for a rim strip. The secret is the nipple, with threads on the outside which thread into the eyelet in the rim, and on the inside which thread onto the spoke. The Threads on the outside of the nipple are left hand, and right hand on the inside, this allows the wheel to be trued like a normal wheel, without the need for a custom spoke or spoke wrench. CASSETTE BODY Every cassette body is machined from 7050 alloy for optimal strength. Two oversized, sealed cartridge bearings keep things rolling smoothly and a 3-pawl system contacts a 30-tooth gear ring for 12-degrees of engagement. BEARINGS We use premium grade double sealed cartridge bearings in our hubs. Why? Cartridge bearings are best for a number of reasons: The friction reducing properties of a fine sealed cartridge bearing just can’t be beat, so rolling resistance is reduced to an absolute minimum; cartridge bearings are replaceable—easily and inexpensively; and our bearings are double sealed, so contamination is virtually eliminated. Finally, we use proprietary grease formulated specifically for bicycle wheel conditions. BEARING PRELOAD ADJUSTERS Our bearing preload adjusters allow easy micro adjustment of the wheel bearing tension for a smooth spinning wheel and extended bearing life. ABC™ (Armored Ballistic Composite) is much more than a marketing gimmick. ABC is Easton’s trade name for a hybrid composite material that optimizes strength and toughness without adding weight. This advanced composite—only used in Easton’s EC90 XC and Haven Carbon wheels—is the single biggest contributor to the strength and durability of Easton wheels. Like any composite, ABC’s strength comes from its individual components—a high-end fiber called HMPE™ and a revolutionary resin dubbed MRES-B™. HMPE™ (High Modulus Polyethylene) The material of choice for military applications from assault helicopters to next-generation helmets and ultra lightweight body armor, HMPE is the strongest of the man-made fiber families. HMPE is Easton’s alternative to Aramid-class (Kevlar® and others) fibers in applications where a high strength-to-weight ratio needs to be combined with exceptional impact (ballistic and blast) strength.

MRES-B™ MRES-class resin utilizes impact-resistant components to enhance the ballistic and blast performance of the finished composite. By using MRES-B in our material and combining it with proprietary fabrication technique, Easton’s Armored Ballistic Composite (ABC) composite hybrid can achieve optimal strength and toughness with 15-20% less resin (in other words, it achieves the same durability at a lower weight).

The EA90 XC wheelset was designed from the ground up for competitive trail riding and cross country racing. The aluminum rims are welded for an airtight UST seal right out of the box (no fussing with rim strips or sealant). And because the internal rim width is a generous 19-millimeters, these wheels easily accommodate tires as wide as 2.35”. The rims are laced with 24 Sapim double-butted spokes to a flashy set of anodized red M1 hubs and sealed cartridge bearings keep the EA90 XC spinning trouble free. TORTURE TESTING

A FEW OF THE FIXTURES IN EASTON’S TEST LAB One of Easton’s biggest competitive advantages is the ability to test components and wheels in our Scotts Valley, California, headquarters. Our engineers are able to prototype, test and redevelop components in a fraction of the time it takes our competitors just to reserve time at third-party test labs. We take pride in having some of the most stringent testing protocols in cycling. Here are just a few of our favorite tests and how they relate to the real world. IMPACT TEST This is the ultimate strength test—it’s loud, violent and designed to break rims and handlebars. With this custom-built fixture we can test handlebars and wheels well beyond the industry standard. The Havoc 35 Carbon handlebar really shines on this test, outperforming every handlebar on the market by more than 20-percent. In the wheel world, our Armored Ballistic Composite-equipped Haven Carbon and EC90 XC wheels offer the best impact resistance in their categories. HANDLE BAR FATIGUE TEST This custom testing machine uses hydraulic arms to stress handlebars. We run this test through 250,000 cycles to give you the confidence that you are riding the best components available. WHEEL DRIVE TORQUE FATIGUE TEST This test applies a static load of 240 pounds to a wheel and tire. The wheel is restrained to prevent from rotating and a torsional load is applied to the cassette body through a lever and a pneumatic actuator. The actuator operates at 30 cycles per minute. The test is run to 120,000 cycles or until failure. This is the ultimate test of the hub’s drive mechanism, hub shell and spokes. BRAKE TRACK TEST This test simulates hard braking on long, steep descents in hot days. In this fixture, a wheel (with tire) is driven forward with brake caliper loads adjusted to maintain constant pressure. During testing, temperature of the rim surface is monitored as it exits the brake pad on both sides. All loads and temperatures are recorded with one sample per second and rim width is measured before and after the test. Through the results of this test (as well as real world data) we can proudly state that Easton carbon clinchers (with ThermaTec) offer the best braking and heat dissipation in the industry.

COMPONENTS TECHNOLOGY THE DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

TOP-LOCK™ TECHNOLOGY “Tighten the top two bolts first.” With Top-Lock Technology, simply torqueing the top bolts to the appropriate spec (before you tighten the lower bolts) creates a safer, stronger interface with three main advantages: a smoother clamping surface (making it friendly on carbon bars), improved stiffness and decreased fatigue on the stem’s faceplate bolts.

TAPERWALL™ TECHNOLOGY TaperWall starts with computer-modulated draw benches that create multiple thicknesses in the same tube, so the tube walls can be reinforced anywhere with incredible precision. In aluminum the result is jeweler-smooth walls that eliminate stress points (boosting strength, reducing weight and improving fatigue life). In our carbon composite components, Taperwall applies more material to wall surfaces where stiffness is paramount and less material to areas requiring more compliance. The advantage is clear in aluminum or composite: Taperwall radically enhances strength and durability, at less weight. Additionally, Taperwall produces lively, responsive ride quality and improved shock absorption.

DST™ (Distributed Stress Technology) DST reduces stem clamping stress by changing the shape of the interface between the bar, stem and faceplate. By distributing clamping forces over a larger area and moving the stem bolts away from the edge of the stem, we distribute stress more evenly along the center section of the handlebar. INTELLIGENT FLEXIBILITY One big advantage Easton’s carbon fiber components have over aluminum is Intelligent Flexibility. Easton engineers custom-tune each carbon bar and fork by strategically adding flexibility in some areas (to damp road vibrations and trail chatter, for example), while simultaneously adding rigidity to other areas (to boost power transfer or improve cornering). Intelligent Flexibility provides incredible rigidity when it’s time to stand up and sprint, yet yields a crisp, supple ride that will keep you fresh on long rides.

SEATPOSTS AND R.A.D.™ Each and every Easton seatpost leaves our doors with a five-year warranty. How can we be so confident in the durability of such a crucial component? We engineer, analyze and test every last detail in house; we use only premium materials; and we rely on proprietary technologies like Relief-Area Design (R.A.D.). R.A.D. is that flat spot that runs the length of Easton carbon steerer tubes and seatposts, corresponding with the clamp zone of stems and seatpost clamps. Removing material in these critical zones prevents clamping forces from pinching and damaging carbon tubing, thus eliminating the weakest point on a typical seatpost or steerer tube. EASTON STEMS It’s relatively easy to make a really light stem—unfortunately stiffness and durability are usually the first two attributes compromised. If you know anything about Easton, you know that reliability and performance are the chief concerns, cutting grams is secondary. So when you marvel at the weights of our 2012 line of stems, know that these things incorporate the very best in materials, cutting edge manufacturing techniques and a handful of proprietary engineering solutions. The resulting stems deliver winning weight as well as solid dependability.

AERO VS. STANDARD Easton road handlebars are available in two options—standard and Aero. Aero basically means that the tops are wing-shaped, or tear dropped. Aero handlebars are also more aerodynamic (hence the name Aero) because the bars feature less frontal surface area. Aero bars are a great option for riders seeking a wind-cheating advantage, but perhaps the biggest benefit comes from the enhanced comfort. The flat tops feel great on the hands (especially on rough roads).

HAVOC 35 TECHNOLOGY BIGGER, STRONGER, STIFFER. BETTER.

WHY NOW? The market has been pushing Easton to introduce a wider version of the popular Havoc handlebar for years. And for good reason: the 750-millimeter-wide Havoc Carbon handlebar was the strongest option available. Stronger than any aluminum bar and stronger than any other carbon bar. Through our in-house testing of every modern handlebar on the market, however, we found that stiffness and strength decrease dramatically with wider bars. We weren’t willing to sacrifice performance in our class-leading Havoc handlebar. That left us with two options: add more weight and bulk-up the entire bar or rethink the stem/handlebar interface. We made the right choice: by increasing the clamp diameter to 35-millimeters, the new Havoc 35 system combines 800-millimeter width, exceptional stiffness, astounding strength and is actually lighter than its 750millimeter-wide, 31.8-millimeter-clamp Havoc counterpart! Simply put, the Havoc 35 bar/stem combination introduces a level of performance never before seen in mountain biking. THE MOTO CONNECTION Easton is no stranger to wide handlebars. In fact we’ve been making 800-millimeter-wide moto bars since the early ‘90’s. Just three-years ago, Easton lead the charge in the motocross world to a new bar clamp standard, from 1 1/8” (28.6-millimeters) to 35-millimeters. The new system was instantly well received by performance-minded motorcyclists and the results were proven in countless fatigue and impact tests, in the real world and in the test lab. Coming off this recent success in moto, Easton engineers saw right to the heart of the downhill handlebar predicament—In the arms race of our-bars-are-wider-than-yours, bike-industry manufacturers failed to consider stiffness, strength, and more importantly, the handlebar’s attachment point to the bike—the stem. It was time to adapt the 35-millimeter standard to mountain bikes. WIDER There are a number of good reasons that riders are demanding wider bars—increased control, less fatigue in rough terrain and more stability at speed. These improvements are the direct result of the increase in leverage that comes from a wider handlebar. The new Havoc 35 series of handlebars measure a full 800-millimeters-wide, with premeasured cutting guides down to 750-millimeters to suit rider preference. STRONGER Strength is the main reason we adopted the 35-millimeter size. In our rigorous testing, we tested every combination of stem and handlebar we could find. In a side-by-side comparison (with every other variable eliminated), the Havoc 35 system was 15-percent stronger in the drop test (compared to 31.8-millimeter bar/stem). In long term fatigue tests, carbon bars last ten-times longer than aluminum. STIFFER Havoc 35 series handlebars are 21-percent stiffer than traditional 31.8-millimeter designs. Considering the direct correlation to handlebar/stem stiffness and steering precision, upgrading to the Havoc 35 system will offer a noticeable improvement in a bike’s handling. LIGHTER Even with these remarkable improvements in strength, stiffness, and of course the increased width, Havoc 35 series handlebars are nearly 10-percent lighter than their 31.8-millimeter counterparts. In fact, the Havoc 35 Carbon bar is by far the lightest downhill handlebar on the market (220 grams).

HAVOC 35—BOLT-ON VS. STANDARD Easton’s Havoc 35 system is available in five handlebar variations (including carbon) and two stems—standard or Bolt-on. The Havoc 35 standard stem clamps onto a standard, 1 1/8th steerer tube. The Havoc 35 Bolt-On mounts directly to the crown of a Fox Racing Shox 40 fork or a Rock Shox Boxxer. While the standard stem is more versatile (it can fit any 1 1/8th steer tube), the Havoc 35 Bolt-on offers an unsurpassed level of strength and stiffness. Like all forks in the EC90 family, the new SL Taper incorporates Easton’s unique ITT™ Internal Thread Technology, which eliminates slippage and possible steer tube damage caused by traditional expanding steer tube plugs. Any rider will feel confident knowing that the EC90 SL Taper features one-piece continuous carbon monocoque construction and R.A.D.-equipped steerer tube. This fork accommodates 1 1/2” lower crown races and 1 1/8” upper races. Additionally, the ITT™ anchor nut makes for easy headset adjustments and eliminates slippage or steerer tube damage.
