Welcome After our lovely summer (!) what better way to spend those autumnal nights than with some truly great music - and we have a splendid mix for your delectation, along with our programme of classes and workshops. Our new season has a strong focus on some of the finest women performers from the trad world, with the legend that is Peggy Seeger, a warm return to both Kathryn Tickell and Karine Polwart, and the only Scottish date by Eliza Carthy and her Mum Norma Waterson. We are so thrilled that we have re-scheduled this performance which had to be cancelled a few years back due to Norma's illness. A rare foray into theatre, as we welcome two one-man shows from Arches Theatre featuring emerging stars of Scottish theatre, Kieran Hurley and Gary McNair who both received considerable plaudits at this year's Edinburgh Fringe. And we have a talk on Bob Dylan, along with loud music and rare footage from Michael Gray, who is exploring Dylan's influences from the Blues.

Stirling's own Jamie MacDougall is here for the first time and Scottish comedy star Daniel Sloss is back after his sell-out show earlier in the year, Also we are honoured that Aly Bain, Scotland's finest fiddler, is coming to the Tolbooth with Ale Mรถller and Bruce Molsky - what an unmissable combination. We're thrilled to bring this show to Stirling after its sell-out at Celtic Connections. Interweaving songs, tunes and spoken-word narrative, it leads the audience on a magical, moving, humbling and often hilarious journey through the culture and lore of Kathryn's native North Tyne Valley: the very heartland of her world-renowned prowess on the Northumbrian pipes, and as a fiddler and singer.

If you’ve ever dreamt about singing your favourite jazz song with a live band in front of an appreciative audience, then our open mic nights are for you! All you need to bring is a simple lead sheet (chords and melody in your key) for the song you want to sing and our outstanding jazz trio will accompany you with empathy and panache.

The performance includes interviews and recordings with family members and the shepherd musicians from whom she learnt. It marks the latest homecoming in her increasingly illustrious globe-trotting career. Broken Records make their first appearance in Stirling at this year's Reloaded Fest. The Edinburgh septet bring their Indie Folk to the festival's main stage as our Friday night headliners. The band's live sets are highly anticipated with the NME branding them the Scottish Arcade Fire.

SONG OF RETURN

Song of Return join the lineup for the first day of the festival, returning to the Tolbooth after one of their first ever gigs here in 2010. Somewhat of a Scottish supergroup the band is fronted by Craig Grant (formerly of Union of Knives) and Louis Abbot (Admiral Fallow).

Our favourite post-electro band from Glasgow are back taking on the mantle of this year's Saturday night headliners at Reloaded Fest. They need no introduction to the Tolbooth, their shows here have always had the crowd dancing and the release of "Have Some Faith In Magic" has gone down just as well, described by Drowned In Sound as "Brilliant".

This three-piece (sometimes six-piece) band started out life in Kilmarnock and have come a long way since. Reloaded Fest will be their first Tolbooth show but we're looking forward to it with the band fresh off the festival circuit including dates at T in the Park and support slots with Idlewild, Panic! Playing the violin, cello, shakuhachi (Japanese flute) and piano, the group performs beautiful melodies that conjure images of Japanese landscapes, but they also play ‘Annie Laurie’ and other traditional Scottish songs. They have a repertoire ranging from world to pop to classical music, appreciated by audiences at many concerts in Japan. In April 2011 they also performed to great acclaim in Edinburgh and Inverness, and we are fortunate they are coming to Scotland again in October. During this performance, Tatsuya Yamauchi will also play part of the concert on a violin made from a pine tree uprooted in the Tsunami last year - to remember the victims and encourage the survivors.

Combining music, song, dance and animated image, it explores the longing and separation, as well as the sense of belonging and completeness that are so present in Hafez's poems: elements that somehow conflict with and complement one another in the same moment. BILL WELLS & AIDAN MOFFAT Thu 22 Nov, 8pm £12/£10

Some partnerships just work, even if it takes time. Eight years in the making, the debut album by Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat, Everything's Getting Older, is a special thing, full of gorgeous, jazz-inflected love songs fleshed out with a mixture of spoken word pieces and vocals delivered in Aidan's distinctive rhotic singing voice. Wells is the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer, leader of the Bill Wells Octet and collaborator with The Pastels, Isobel Campbell, Future Pilot AKA and many more. Moffat is a man of many projects, whether his solo material released under his full name Aidan John Moffat, his band Aidan Moffat & the Best-Ofs or, in a former life, his experimental work as L Pierre, Lucky Pierre and his long history as one half of iconic Scots duo Arab Strap.

The pair first met back in Moffat’s Arab Strap days in – predictably – a pub, when Aidan and bandmate Malcolm Middleton invited Bill to play piano on their Monday At The Hug & Pint album. Their album, Everything’s Getting Older, released in 2011 to critical acclaim, won the inaugural Scottish Album of the year award earlier this year.

With the release of her newest acclaimed album 'Traces' we are so excited to welcome award-winning Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart back to the Tolbooth with her two regular touring collaborators, brother Steven Polwart (guitars & vocals) and Fair Islander Inge Thomson (accordion, percussion and vocals).

Her songs deal with humanity in all its many guises: there is tenderness, triumph and sorrow, raised flags of rebellion and independence, flashes of anger at power abused and misused. Born in Glasgow, Tom Leonard is best known for poetry written in the urban speech of that city. This, and his seminal critical writings, have had a major impact on attitudes to language and writing in Scotland, and beyond. Tonight Tom will be reading poems from his latest book 'Outside the Narrative'. Also performing will be our local star, poet Billy Letford who just released his first book Bevel and Stirling Makar Anita Govan.

South Uist's Kathleen MacInnes is one of Scotland's finest Gaelic singers with a unique voice and an ability to breathe dramatic life into her songs. She is joined for this performance of songs from her new CD, Cille Bhride, by singer and multi-instrumentalist Griogair Labhruidh. Kathleen started as an actress, with a background in Gaelic TV, film and theatre, but since the stunning success of her first album 'Og Mhadainn Shamhraidh' including winning best album at the Scottish trad awards she is now better known for her singing. In 2010 Kathleen's vocals featured in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, with Scott commenting 'a natural, powerful voice... beautiful'. Griogair was brought up near the village of Gartocharn in a region once steeped in Gaelic traditions. A traditional Gaelic singer who sings in the seann-nòs style of the southern Hebrides and Argyll he is also an accomplished guitarist, piper and composer of both bagpipe music and Gaelic song.

They will lead an afternoon workshop for all participants, who will also be able to sing with the Madrigirls at their evening concert. Madrigirls is a group of female undergraduates, postgraduates, alumni and friends of the University of Glasgow, led by Katy Cooper & Catriona Hutchison. Morning workshops will be with individual tutors, and there will be an open mic session over lunch for groups and individual singers. Stirling Takeover Festival returns for the second year running on the 2nd November at the Stirling Rugby Club. The festival proceeds go to the Takeover Fund which gives young people the opportunity to apply for a small amount of money to get an arts projects they're working on off the ground. Traditional Music Workshops and Stirling Youth Jazz Ensemble

will be starting up again in September and we are looking for new members to join these well established groups. Both the jazz and trad workshops have been based at the Tolbooth since 2005 and offer the opportunity for young musicians to learn and play alongside some of Scotlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest musicians including traditional, Lori Watson (fiddle), Innes Watson (guitar), Claire Mann (flute and whistle) and jazz, Laura Macdonald (saxophone) and Kevin Mackenzie (guitar) as well as inspiring guest tutors throughout the year. Being based in the Tolbooth there are also opportunities to see live performances and to become involved in other opportunities developed by the Tolbooth such as Summer Schools and masterclasses. There are also opportunities for both groups to perform throughout the year both within and outwith the Tolbooth. Thanks to funding from the Youth Music Initiative the workshops are FREE and are open to children and young people aged 10 - 18 from Stirling Council Schools. Both workshops are open to beginners (minimum 6 months experience of instruments) through to advanced musicians.
