2016 was one of the most successful years with some outstanding performances and memorable shows, and we are looking to match this in 2017! Some of the shows are well on their way to being sold out as we go to print – so don’t delay getting your tickets… We reach another milestone in the Tolbooth as we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the venue opening after the masterful refurbishment by Richard Murphy. To celebrate we have a great weekend of music, with Martin Taylor, an evening featuring young people who attend our workshops and a Strange Behaviours night of the best of indie acts, both local and national. From the very outset alongside the programme we have tried to offer opportunities for participating in music and the arts as we firmly believe it’s just the best – whether it be for fun with friends or forging the professional route. Our classes and workshops have been the catalyst for countless long-lasting friendships and musical partnerships, with numerous participants going on to pursue a career in music. It’s been a special place to be part of over the past 15 years, long may it continue! Highlights at the Albert Halls include the RSNO Viennese Gala, not to mention Strictly stars Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe; the laconic wit of Reginald D Hunter, and fun and laughter from The Dolls Abroad. As well as the 15th birthday week-end Tolbooth highlights include the only Scottish date from mighty blues rocker Popa Chubby, comedy nights including Shappi Khorsandi and experimental jazz/ math rock from Newcastle’s Taupe. And don’t forget if you would like to join our fiddle or guitar classes, or your child would enjoy art or ceramics, look up under creative learning and sign up to learn something new for the New Year!

Popa Chubby
Amythyst Kiah
DATE Friday 27 January TIME 8pm TICKETS £14/£12 Standing
DATE Friday 3 February TIME 8pm TICKETS £12
Only Scottish date. From New York, Popa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 25 years. He is a force to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful with a performance style he describes as ‘the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson.’ A guaranteed crowd pleaser – tonight you will get a night of back to basics, no frills attached, Blues and Rock ’N’ Roll, from Popa and his band in a set mixing his own originals from his long career, along with some choice covers. If you’re a fan of the blues, Popa Chubby is definitely one to check out. ‘Showing off his fantastic guitar capabilities at every opportunity, on his own tracks as well as old blues standards, his set is an electrifying watch. His vocal chops are equally impressive, veering from a fiery cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Sympathy for the Devil’, and after a smooth segue from a Hendrix style jam moving into a strangely beautiful rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’.
Box office 01786 274000 / 01786 473544
From Johnson City, Tennessee, Amythyst Kiah describes herself as a Southern Gothic, alt-country blues singer-songwriter. Her influences span decades and diverse styles: combining rhythm and blues and old-time covers alongside startling originals with an angular contemporary twist, she bestrides both spheres with complete authenticity and authority. Channelled through her massively expressive voice, this richly layered repertoire confirms Amythyst’s emergence as a hugely distinctive new artist. ‘She has rising talent written all over her. A 29-year-old with a striking shock of hair and a huskily expressive voice which modulates between strength and tenderness, Kiah strides comfortably across jazz, blues and even country styles.’ The Scotsman ‘Amythyst Kiah is going to be famous … the best way to experience her music is in person. I don’t think it’s an understatement to say that Amythyst Kiah will remind you what it is to love live music.’ No Depression

DATE Saturday 11 February TIME 8pm TICKETS £5 adv. / £7 on the door
Fara are four exceptionally talented young musicians who grew up together on Orkney, and who first got together at the Orkney Folk Festival. They have just released their debut album and have already performed at many festivals including Celtic Connections and the Cambridge Folk Festival.
Currently on a mission to revive the glory days of Stirling’s hardcore scene, Serenity are a band who have a passionate DIY ethic and a thirst to connect Stirling to the wider country’s post-hardcore and metalcore. On their first UK tour in support of their debut EP ‘By Any Means’, they stop by the Tolbooth where they cut their teeth at our City Music Live youth music nights, to stage another full night of beat-downs and heavy riffage.
Individually they play with artists such as Blazin Fiddles, Cara, Rachel Sermanni and Twelfth Day. With music firmly rooted in the traditions of Orkney, Kristan Harvey, Jeana Leslie and Catriona Price’s dynamic fiddles combine with Jennifer Austin’s driving piano to produce a fiery sound firmly rooted in their Orcadian heritage. Add in Jeana’s vocals and harmonies and the combination is a vocal and instrumental delight! ‘fantastic playing, clearly loving what they are doing, with rapturous audience rapport, what more could you want in a show?’ Anna Massie, BBC Radio Scotland

Of the ensemble’s recent CD ‘Music From 3 Continents’, released on the US Ravello label, reviewer Colin Clarke wrote in the American Fanfare (equivalent of The Gramophone in the UK) ‘The very first track gives you some idea of the power of this disc ... an explosion of sound and exuberance. The performance is simply stunning, and Hair’s imagination seems to know no bounds ... Do investigate, there is something very special about this recording.’ Scottish Voices’ repertoire tonight will include Scottish works of historic provenance by Hamish MacCunn and Hans Gal and works by contemporary composers Edward McGuire, John Maxwell Geddes, John Gormley and Scottish Voices’ musical director Graham Hair: with voices, obbligato instruments, harp, piano and electroacoustics. To begin with, the orchestra isn’t up on the stage; it sits on the floor with the audience which, of itself, creates a more relaxed ambience. Then there’s the audience participation aspect; last time, the younger, smaller members of our listeners joined in the music with gusto, boogieing and bopping to whatever was being played to the huge enjoyment of all. We’ll be mightily disappointed if this doesn’t happen again!
A raffle with great prizes and a bit to eat is included.

It has been 50 years since Glasgow Celtic achieved the unimaginable by winning the European Cup and becoming the legendary Lisbon Lions.
A tribute to Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and Jim Reeves, performed by Sue Lowry, a lifelong fan of Patsy Cline and country music, Marc Robinson and Roger Bird.
This two-man play, On Our Way to Lisbon, tells the story of how, in 1967, Glasgow Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup with victory over the mighty Inter Milan. Two fans look back and fondly recreate how the Bhoys in Green and White beat the team who were hailed as unbeatable. The wildly magnificent campaign comes to life as two supporters become everything from a vicious Swiss football team to the entire population of Lisbon! Put on those scarves, dust off your passport and come with us as once again Celtic steam-roll over the best teams in Europe to become the immortal Lisbon Lions. If you love Celtic you have to see this show and join us, as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary.
Patsy Cline was a record breaking recording artist spending 251 weeks in the Country Music Album charts in the U.S.A. Sue Lowry with her powerful rendition of Crazy, Sweet Dreams & I Fall to Pieces will take you back to those Honky Tonk days of pure Country Music, songs include … Honky Tonk Merry go Round , She’s Got You, & Got a lot of Rhythm in my Soul. Marc Robinson, who has been up to now renowned for playing Buddy Holly, will pay tribute to the Granddaddy of Country Music Hank Williams with songs that include … Howlin’ at the Moon, I saw the Light, and Rootie Tootie. Roger Bird performs a sensitive tribute to Jim Reeves with his authentic costume and iconic mesmerizing voice , songs will include … Welcome to my World , Distant Drums, and the song everyone knows – a song everyone can join in with, Bimbo! Please wear your Western wear and join us for a Hayride of a Show! Suits all ages, as long as you’re prepared for a ‘Honkin Tonkin’ good Time! Pure Country Magic!

Goodbye Gregor! With 2016 come to an end, it’s time to bid farewell to our Creative Modern Apprentice Gregor Flynn. He’s been an excellent addition to the Culture Team and we’re truly going to miss him. His work over the past year has had a significant impact on our events, workshops, collaborative projects and marketing activities, regularly contributing ideas and activities along the way which we’ll continue to expand on. Here’s a final word from the man himself. All the best for the future Gregor! Well I have had a great time, I have learned a whole host of new skills and feel like as a person I have grown more confident and creative from my time here. Next I am off to complete my college education in sound production, though I still plan to be heavily involved in some of the Tolbooth’s projects on a voluntary basis, as well as focusing more on my own musical endeavours ‘Thurmpy’ and ‘Babycino Records’.
The Visit On 5 and 6 April the Tolbooth will be hosting The Visit – the third event of its kind, where international festivals and promoters will be coming to see the best Scottish traditional musicians and bands perform. This is an offshoot of Showcase Scotland, part of Celtic Connections. Last year we hosted promoters from Germany and central Europe, and in 2017 the promoters will mainly be from Canada and North America…

The Bruce 700 on CD Stirling Council commissioned Allan MacDonald to compose a musical commission to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn in 2014. We are delighted to say that in 2016 the commission has been released on CD – a recording of the performance at Celtic Connections – a wonderful further legacy for the event. If anyone would like to buy one, they are available from Stirling Bagpipes on Broad Street or on-line.
Scots Sang Project Continues to be in demand. We have one more school to do before we can say we have reached every school in Stirling… In December we heard performances from Cambusbarron and St Ninians Primary Schools, and in March the schools will be Riverside and Newton Primary Schools. Local singer Amy Lord teaches the children Scots sanga nd language, and then they come in to perform what they have learned, as well as being treated to a performance by some top Scottish traditional performers. This project is thanks to continued funding from the Youth Music Initiative.
