Welcome Welcome to the new brochure. We have waved a sad farewell to Alasdair Campbell, though we know his influence, knowledge and enthusiasm for music will remain with us. Looking to the year ahead, the programme will be developed by the Tolbooth’s Arts Development Team, led by Senior Arts Development Officer, Carolyn Paterson, and Music Development Officer, Stephen Hume. Visual Arts Development Officer, Emma Hamilton, will continue to curate The Changing Room Gallery, bringing emerging and established artists of international standing to Stirling and providing vocational training and peer support for locally-based artists. Carolyn has been working within the Scottish music scene for over 25 years, including involvement with many of Scotland's top traditional musicians. Stephen is keen to expand a role which has seen him already develop reloaded into a huge success and has attracted acts such as Mogwai to the intimate Tolbooth. Both are committed to continuing to offer a rich and diverse range of world class music on your doorstep.

Two special concerts take place in June by some of the best emerging traditional musicians in the country, with music students from the Trad Music course at the RSAMD performing on the 10 June, with a pre-gig talk about their course and on 22 June we have all 24 of the young students from the National School of Traditional Music in Plockton. The rich mix on offer April to June also includes the outstanding musicianship of Lau, an evening to get you dancing with a welcome return from Cuba’s Sierra Maestra, the class and imagination of the Red Note Ensemble, Three Blind Wolves, winner of Best Live Act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards and the legendary Judy Collins on the only Scottish date of her tour. And that’s just for starters. We hope you continue to support live music at the Tolbooth and look forward to seeing you at one of the performances. The Arts Development Team

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

NEWT

Organised by pupils from throughout Stirling, the 2011 Stirling Schools Battle of the Bands has finally arrived.

Edinburgh trio NeWt have been establishing a reputation as one of the UK's most unique groups since their formation in 2006.

One band from each High School in Stirling will battle it out once more to be crowned 2011's winner.

This reputation has now spread into Europe as a result of their collaboration with Berlin sax/ clarinet player Silke Eberhard.

A panel of expert judges have been assembled who will use their musical knowledge to decipher which act is worthy. Surely this must be one of the highlights of the school year!

Their second album "NeWt 2" was picked up by the trail-blazing F-IRE Collective of London and released to wide acclaim.

Fri 1 Apr, 6.30pm £3

Previous winners have included The Occupationists and 3 4 All, but who will win this year?

Sat 2 Apr, 8pm £8/£6

The trio and now augmented quartet walk the tight-rope between spontaneous improvisation and compositional complexity with staggering results.

"...a totally absorbing blend of experimentation and unashamed tunefulness." Jazz UK

WOODY PINES

TEA & CAKE RECITAL

There was a time when Woody Pines went out alone with resonator guitar to make a name for himself in New Orleans, then playing coast-to-coast across the USA.

These afternoon recitals are one of the most popular concerts we have ever run.

Sat 23 Apr, 8pm £12/£10

These days Woody fronts a hot little band with the same name, that has become one of the most popular on the Stateside roots music circuit, winning accolades aplenty and praise from some of the giants of the Americana scene. After seeing them perform at Nelsonville Folk & Blues Festival in Ohio, Billy Joe Shaver, the top gun Outlaw Country legend declared: "They're the best damn band I've ever heard!"

Sat 30 Apr / Sat 25 Jun £8 incl tea & cake

It could be the fantastic homemade cake, or the lovely tea but we would like to think that it is the wonderful musicians and beautiful music that keeps you coming back for more. Details for this season's classical recitals have yet to be confirmed so visit our website www. stirling.gov.uk/tolbooth or call the box office for full details nearer the time. With a slice of cake a cup and a cup of tea, or coffee, included in the price you will need to book early to avoid missing out.

Woody Pines won legions of new fans when they toured the UK for the first time in 2010 and it is a pleasure to welcome them back to the Tolbooth. www.woodypines.com

Liz Carroll & Johnny Doyle

DAVE ANDERSON'S SHOOBY DOO

Individually both Liz Carroll and Johnny Doyle are celebrated as outstanding exponents of their instruments.

You may know Dave Anderson as the Bank Manager in City Lights, or Gregory’s Dad in Gregory’s Girl, but he started his career as a songwriter: his songs for The Steamie are being sung (somewhere) right now.

Thu 5 May, 8pm £10/£8

Born in Chicago, of Irish parents, Liz is an award winning fiddle player and composer of traditional Irish music, who has just been awarded Traditional Composer of the Year by TG4, Ireland's Irish language television station, making her the first American-born composer to do so. Johnny Doyle is renowned as a master of the guitar, a founding member of Irish-American supergroup Solas he has recently forged his own path as a successful solo artist. Together, their long standing musical partnership is highly regarded amongst contemporaries, critics and audiences alike. We're delighted to have them perform at the Tolbooth.

Sat 7 May, 8pm £10/£8

Encouraged by the success of Tir nan Og (“Best New Musical” - Edinburgh 2007), Dave has embarked on a series of new minimusicals, this being the mini-est yet, having a cast of one, including the orchestra! The theme is his teenage years, which just happens to be the late ‘50’s, when Rock’n’Roll was King, and hair was, well, on his head. Expect hits (and forgotten classics) of the time, plus new songs of his own. This is more than a trip down Memory Lane, though: Dave, in his raconteur’s hat, talks about the contrasts between life then and now, discusses the business of writing - and surviving the 21st Century.

THE WILDERS Fri 13 May, 8pm £14/£12

One of the most highly-charged ‘live’ acts on the circuit, The Wilders return from Kansas City to thrill Tolbooth regulars once more with a brand new album (their fifth) in what is set to become the band’s busiest year ever. They pulled a capacity crowd to Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket during Celtic Connections festival in January, were invited to be one of the main draws at Shetland Folk Festival, and won a return to Bath International Music Festival where they were described as “an absolute triumph" in 2010.

The Red Note Ensemble Infinito Nero (an ecstasy in one act) Sat 14 May, 8pm £10/£8

Red Note, Scotland’s professional contemporary music ensemble, continues on its bold path presenting rarely-heard classics of international new music alongside new work by UK composers on its regular Scottish tours. Here, Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino’s extraordinary and disturbing Infinito Nero, an “ecstasy in one act” based on the evocative visions of the early seventeenth-century mystic St Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, rides alongside a new Red Note commission by Scottish composer and viola player Carolyn Sparey, in concert with other classic works by Sciarrino and fellow Italian Luciano Berio. LAU

Sat 21 May, 8pm £14/£12 In 2004, sat around a kitchen table in Edinburgh, Lau took their first musical steps. Now, to have achieved so much, in so few years, is staggering. The warmth and excitement they generate with each new release, and at every gig, has culminated in armfuls of plaudits, including three consecutive years of being crowned 'Best Group' at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards. Their strength partly lies in the pool of knowledge they draw on. Kris Drever grew up on Orkney and is celebrated for his singing and guitar playing - his talents as an accompanist have been sought by artists such as Kate Rusby, John McCusker and Roddy Woomble.

member of Blazin’ Fiddles, Aidan is a major talent and appears on over eighty diverse recordings. Whereas Martin Green is from south of the border, East Anglia raised. A true maverick, he is in constant demand for his accordion playing and has toured in the bands of Eliza Carthy, Joan Baez, Linda Thompson and many other great names of folk music.

SIERRA MAESTRA

Wed 25 May, 8pm £14/£12 | STANDING ONLY When the nine friends, all students in various engineering faculties at Havana University first decided to form a music group, they were thinking of maybe funk or something Brazilian, both so popular at the time. It was the father of the two brothers in the group, Juan de Marcos and Carlos González, who suggested they play son instead. The traditional son line-up: tres. guitar, trumpet, bongo, guiro and vocals brings back the sound of the Golden Age of the 20's and 30's. Calling themselves Sierra Maestra after the birthplace of the music in Eastern Cuba, the group quickly found they were on to a big hit. From 1976 onwards they were popular all over the island and their first album in 1980 an island-wide success. Son was back, after a lull of some 40 years.

14

Now, almost 40 years on since they formed and with five of the original members still present, Sierra Maestra have gone to great lengths to find young talented writers with new songs that are in the son tradition and style, but expressed in new musical and lyrical directions. Having closed out 2010's Blend Festival at the Tolbooth in front of a capacity crowd we are delighted to have them back for another night of authentic Cuban son.

"If you could bottle the atmosphere of sheer pleasure generated between Cuba's Sierra Maestra and their audience you'd be a billionaire pretty quickly." The Scotsman

And whilst tradition lies at the very heart of the performance, ‘live’ they are breathtakingly exciting and have won comments such as “stunning” and “mind-blowing”. Fiery and exhilarating, their music stirs the blood in a way we have come to expect but it also surprises too, with clever, contemporary twists and turns, and that twinkle of the eye and rakish charm, true hallmarks of their home turf. www.fidilmusic.com

Smith/Stewart until 30 April

Stephanie Smith and Edward Stewart have been making work collaboratively since 1992. Their work can be tough and confrontational. Fundamental concerns revolve around human relations and what people are capable of doing to one another, both physically and psychologically. Early video installations involved the dual interaction of a man and woman (the artists), often in extreme situations requiring mutual complicity and trust. For this exhibition Smith/Stewart wish to explore a new direction, where their interaction with others forms the basis of the work. Through giving specific instructions and working with particular groups, they aim to explore the boundaries of collaboration, power, intimacy, acting and reality.

Smith/Stewart discuss their work made for The Changing Room. This event is free but please call 01786 27 4000 to book a ticket. GALLERY OPEN TUESDAY-SATURDAY, 10AM-6PM OPEN LATE: 17 & 26 MARCH 23 APRIL ADMISSION FREE

Commissioned by Edinburgh Printmakers & curated by SarahManning Cordwell, Norman Shaw, and Edward Summerton, Prints of Darkness explores record cover art. Featuring work from Andrew Cranston, Tommy Crooks, Malcy Duff, Duncan Marquiss, Lee O’Connor, Christopher Orr, People Like Us, Norman Shaw, Edward Summerton, The Lonely Piper, Andy Wake & Mark Wallace.
