Rura
Sat 18 Apr , 8pm £13/£11 Internationally renowned for their punch-packing mix of highland pipes, whistle, flute, fiddle, bodhran, guitar and voice, Rura is one of the most exciting bands of their generation. Steven Blake, Jack Smedley, David Foley and Adam Brown create muscular, yet intricately arranged and lyrical instrumentals to match singer/songwriter Adam Holmes’ haunting songcraft – a perfected mix that has seen them rise to headline status at festivals throughout the UK and Europe.
Since bursting on to the scene in 2010, as award winners at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival, Rura have firmly established themselves as a major force. The release of their heralded first album, Break It Up, in 2012 (produced by Lau and Kan fiddler, Aidan O’Rourke) was accompanied by multiple award wins, and nominations including the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2013 - and now the
five-piece’s second album is set for release to coincide with this tour... it is one of the most hotly-anticipated albums in recent years. “What every festival needs… barnstorming!” BBC Radio Scotland “Scotland’s hottest folk prospects.” The Scotsman tickets 01786 27 4000

Sat 25 Apr, doors 7.30pm £5 in adv age 14+ Pioneering a heady blend of electronic, bass and techno influences alongside indie, shoegaze and progressive rock, Machines In Heaven are adept at turning heads. With more accolades than we have space for, virtually every significant tastemaker both sides of the Atlantic have extended their praise, with even US monolith Billboard magazine dubbing them “the likely 8
bet to follow Chvrches as Glasgow's new synthpop heroes”. Worthy of the hype, watching them weave their sunkissed synth and techno between layers of ambient guitar and glitchy beats is a treat. There’s melancholy and darkness, there’s euphoric crescendos. Not to be missed.
Stellar support comes from local throwback synthpop outfit The Insomniac Project, plus indie electronic band Kill The Waves. "This Is Dreamstep - an unhinged and inventive album to be loved and treasured... One of the finest to come out of Glasgow in many a year” The Herald

The Visit Sat
Shooglenifty + Willie Campbell + Rua MacMillan Trio
Sat 9 May, 8pm £12/£20 for Sat + Sun Three amazing Scottish artists each perform for 30 minutes in this outstanding triple bill showcase. Shooglenifty’s sound springs from traditional Scottish dance music, energised by the beats and bass line of something altogether more contemporary. 'Shooglenifty invented a totally new and spellbinding way of playing ultimately Highland music as a modern groove-based entity. Along with Martyn Bennett they transformed this ancient music with respect and vision. 25 years on they continue to blaze a trail of ‘acid-croft’ that no others can touch.' Aidan O’Rourke, Lau. 14
Willie Campbell was the frontman of Glasgow indie rockers Astrid, foot soldier with The Reindeer Section and a man around the bars of the city in the late 1990's. When the lifestyle and business of music got too much Willie retreated to the place he had once been glad to escape and sought refuge and solace on his native Lewis. Remembering what it was he loved about music he embarked on writing new music for his own solo performance, and re-engaging with his Gaelic roots. The Rua MacMillan Trio will open the evening. Hailing from Nairn, Rua Macmillan is one of Scotland’s top fiddlers. Since meeting at a late
night session at Cambridge Folk Festival in 2006, Rua Macmillan, Tia Files (guitar) and Adam Brown (bodhran) have been making waves in the Scottish folk scene. Having been nominated for 'Folk Band of the Year' (MG Alba Scottish Trad Awards) and 'Live Act of the Year (Spiral Earth Awards), the trio have earned a reputation for their powerful performances, from blistering jigs and reels to poignant slow airs, and show stopping bodhran solos. We are delighted to be involved in The Visit, an exciting initiative that brings promoters from France and northern Europe to Scotland to experience the very best in Scottish music and venues.

Her captivating voice inhabits her music and spins her narratives with an equal balance of strength and sensitivity. With roots firmly within the folk tradition, songs written straight from the heart, as Colin Irwin from fRoots says “..unveiled, committed, uncontrived, persuasive, passionate, empowering, and utterly wonderful".
Sorren Maclean, from Mull, is a singer-songwriter already having shown his worth as chief song-writing collaborator and music foil of Roddy Woomble and having supported Roddy Woomble, Idlewild and King Creosote. Bruce Molsky
Fri 22 May, 8pm £13/£11 Bruce Molsky stands today as one of the finest oldtime fiddlers in the world, the defining virtuoso of Appalachia's timeless folk music traditions. In addition to a prolific solo career, performing on fiddle, guitar, banjo and vocals, Molsky frequently joins genre-busting supergroups, like the Grammy-nominated Fiddlers Four, Mozaik, and Donal Lunny. He was on Nickel Creek's farewell tour, and performs in a trio with Aly Bain and Sweden's great Ale Moller (who after their last stormer of a gig, will be back in the Tolbooth in November). Whether performing an ancient reel from Virginia, a Swedish waltz, or a loping cowboy ballad, it’s 18
a very personal sense of authenticity that deeply informs his music. Linda Ronstadt hears that same honest beauty in Molsky's singing. She placed his singing of "Peg'n'Awl" on her Rhapsody playlist, alongside Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, and Chet Baker. "Bruce has has that ability to track deep emotion in his voice, without any unnecessary adornment," she says.
Molsky is truly old-time's master craftsman, sharing his passion for his music in a way which truly connects to his audience. "The Rembrandt of Appalachian fiddle." Darol Anger, fiddler

Thu 4 Jun, 8pm £14/£12 A welcome return to this popular duo... The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, and the sizzingly-talented young California cellist Natalie Haas may not seem an obvious one, but the duo’s dazzling teamwork, driving, dancing rhythms, and their shared passion for improvising on the melody and the groove of

Lau
Sun 28 Jun, 8pm £16.50 Lau are three highly individual and extremely gifted musicians - Martin Green (accordion and electronics) Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle, fx) and Kris Drever (vocals, guitars). For a decade they have been stretching folk music's boundaries further and exploring new musical territory with each release and concert tour. 2012’s 'Race The Loser' album was nominated for Scottish Album of the Year and featured in many critics best of year lists. 26
Lau appeared on BBC TV’s Later... with Jools Holland extending their audience considerably in the process and won their fourth BBC Radio Folk Award for Best Group a few months later. Lau have since curated three multi-artist weekend festivals called Lau-Land and collaborated with a myriad of other musicians, including legendary Cream bassist Jack Bruce, underground electronica
collective Hacker Farm and Norwegian jazz pioneer Bugge Wesseltoft, Germany's jazz- deep house producer/DJ Henrik Schwarz and Dan Berglund, (bassist with the seminal Esbjörn Svensson Trio).
