Welcome to the Tolbooth's guide to April, May and June, jam-packed with fantastic events, performances and classes. We don't have any favourites, obviously, but here are just a couple of our highlights from this season. Excited is not the word! We have the premieres of two pieces of new music. The Bruce 700 was commissioned by the Tolbooth, from renowned piper and composer Allan MacDonald, to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn. It will premiere at the Albert Halls on 26 June. Stories From The Enchanted Garden is a spectacular collaboration between musicians; Martin Green, Karine Polwart and members from Frightened Rabbit and Admiral Fallow.
Legends, plural! We have two of them at the Tolbooth this season. Hamish Stuart (Average White Band, Paul McCartney Band, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band) brings his band to Stirling in June. With worldwide chart hits and sales of over 360 million to his name, singer-songwriter, Albert Hammond Snr, shares his songs, in his own way. And it doesn't stop there; from the caustic wit of Jo Caulfield to the sonorous tones of James Grant - from the current wunderkinds of the trad scene Treacherous Orchestra to Merrymouth and their special guest John McCusker. All that plus performances by Luke Daniels and our own Laura Macdonald as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme to celebrate the XX Commonwealth Games.
Commissioned by Stirling Council's Creative Learning programme, they will And our 2014 celebrations include be performing orginal songs inspired performances at our sister venue, The Albert Halls by the RSNO, soul legend children's stories from Stirling and Clackmannanshire. Enjoy your anger.

R M HUBBERT + support in associtaion with tHE LoCAL
Thu 29 May 8pm Tickets £10 Age Recommendation 16+ RM Hubbert is a prolific guitarist from Glasgow who writes music about love, death, friendship, mental illness and occasionally a dog called D Bone. It’s not as depressing as the previous sentence suggests. The dark and traumatic events that have informed most of his music have also resulted in work that can only be described as beautiful and majestic. His technical prowess as a guitarist is beyond question as are, perhaps more importantly, his considered and subtle strengths as a composer. His second album, ‘Thirteen Lost & Found’, produced by long-time friend Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand), won the 2013 Scottish Album of the Year Award. ‘Breaks & Bone’ is his latest release and sees a return to solo guitar performance, albeit augmented for the first time with his own vocals. Conceived as an end to the ‘The Ampersand Trilogy’, Breaks & Bone explores the ideas of letting go of grief, accepting depression and finding new love. SINGS THE SONGS Of LEONARd COHEN Fri 30 May 8pm Tickets £13/£11 Christine Tobin takes the Tolbooth audience a thousand kisses deep, in a stunning reworking of the great Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen is now widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century and Christine Tobin is acknowledged on the international scene and in the UK as one of the finest interpreters of his work. As The Guardian’s John L Walters writes, “her 24 carat voice and captivating arrangements are spellbinding, expressing the poetry of his lyrics with unalloyed soulfulness.” Accompanied by talented jazz musicians, Phil Robson on guitar and bass player Dave Whitford, Christine brings together some of Cohen staple songs and some new unexplored material. She takes you on a journey through Cohen’s classic repertoire, with a few diversions to admire fellow Canadian songsmiths, Joni Mitchell and Rufus Wainwright. “Sexy, gutsy, bluesy and beautiful.” Lionel Shriver

ALBERT HAMMONd SNR Sat 31 May 8pm Tickets £18 We are so privileged to welcome a songwriting master - as he brings his band on tour to mark his 70th birthday year. Albert Hammond has been writing hit songs for over forty years and responsible for the sale of over 360 million records worldwide including over 30 chart-toppers. Many of his most beloved songs, like 'The Air That I Breathe' and 'When I Need You' have become hits multiple times with various artists, decade after decade. Albert achieved early success as an artist with his song 'It Never Rains in Southern California' and repeatedly topped the international pop charts with hits including, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy), “One Moment in Time,” and “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before.” This will be an amazing opportunity to hear classic songs, brought back and sung by their creator, an artist in his second youth. Because, as Hammond says, 'I'm gonna turn 70, I feel loved when I am on stage. I just want to be where people love me.' Let's ensure a warm Tolbooth welcome.

BARBARA dICKSON & RAB NOAKES Fri 6 Jun 7.30pm Tickets £20/£18/£16 The Albert Halls Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes have been friends since they were teenagers, singing and playing in venues around Scotland. Subsequently, they have ‘occasionally’ performed live, sang on each other’s records and remained friends for over 40 years. Both have diverse careers and have won awards and praise for their solo work in many fields. Now, they've reunited to perform a wonderful blend of folk songs, classic pop influences and self written favourites. Rab's continuing reputation as one of Scotland's finest singer-songwriters and Barbara's skills as an interpreter of new and traditional songs provide an enviable platform for this unique show. The pair share common ground with their respect for artists such as Dylan, The Beatles and the Everly Brothers which when mixed with their experiences of the folk revival of the 1960s and beyond, create a stage show they are keen to share - recalling their early years in Scottish folk clubs and concert halls along the way.
