Welcome We are still reeling from a truly unforgettable evening with Martin Taylor as well as another sell out performance with Admiral Fallow. The performances by James Grant and Spiers and Boden got a great response - and as for Davina and the Vagabonds - they did everything they said on the tin - and more we hope to get them back! On that note, you wait long enough for a singer with attitude and a fab brass section with a New Orleans sound to come along then along comes another one. After their Celtic Connections success we welcome Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns accompanied by a pair of champion lindy-hoppers.

We welcome back Tolbooth favourites Session A9, Heidi Talbot and Martin Stephenson, back on tour with The Daintees. Tolbooth debut performances include comedian Mark Steel; the gorgeous vocals of Devon Sproule; favourites of Elvis Costello, Larkin Poe, en route upto the Heb Celt Festival; and the free reed fervour of outstanding musicians Tim Edey and Brendan Power. Also, very pleased to present Callendar's Andrew Watt his first gig as a professional, now he has completed his music studies in Newcastle. Combined with the welcome return of Stirling Council Libraries 'Off the Page' along with our summer ceilidhs and summer workshop programme for children and young people plus much more- have a good look through our programme, and the web-site for news of dates now confirmed through to December. Have a great summer

SUMMER CEILIDHS

LARKIN POE

The summer ceilidhs at the Tolbooth have become a bit of a seasonal institution and they are back again this year to bring a bit of Scottish entertainment to the warm summer evenings.

As The Lovell Sisters these precociously talented young women took America by storm playing at the Grand Ole Opry, Telluride and a whole bunch of other top venues and festivals.

Weds 11, 25 Jul & 8, 22 Aug, 8pm / £8/£28 for 4 tickets

The ceilidhs are always great fun and are open to everyone, from the complete beginner to the well-versed ceilidh veteran. Don’t worry if you are new to ceilidh dancing because you will be in good, friendly company. Each ceilidh is led by a caller who will talk you through each dance, making sure you are Stripping The Willow at the right time!

Thu 12 Jul, 8pm £10

Now still only 21 and 23 years of age they have launched themselves as Larkin Poe (backed by a brilliant 3 piece band) with 4 EPs in one year and performances with such stars as Elvis Costello and The Indigo Girls. Their music is unashamedly influenced by their heritage but with hints of pop, Larkin Poe are the real deal with sensational musicianship and stunning vocals. larkinpoe.com

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE

JAZZ SINGERS' SHOWCASE

The story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's adventures after the disastrous defeat at Culloden is dramatic, heroic and really quite outlandish.

Some of the great singers from our regular open mic nights get the opportunity to expand their set and feature more of their favourite songs in this very special showcase.

For several months he was ruthlessly pursued through the highlands and islands of Scotland by the Hanoverian redcoats.

Host Sue McHugh will be joined by Liz Dicks, Terry O'Neill, Fiona Reid and Mike Rogers, providing a range of styles and song choices from the very old to the very new.

Thu 10 Aug, 8pm / £10/£8

Living off the land, he suffered exposure, illness, and the hourly danger of being apprehended and executed, but against almost impossible odds, made his escape to France.

Wed 15 Aug, 8pm / £5

Accompanied by our regular house band, the incomparable Jim Clelland Trio, a very enjoyable musical evening is guaranteed.

Jimmie Macgregor was offered the chance to make a TV series which began on Culloden field and took him in the prince's footsteps through some of the wildest parts of the Highland landscape. The result is one of the most visually and dramatically interesting of his illustrated talks, delivered in Jimmie's characteristically informal style.

MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES Thu 23 Aug, 8pm / £16 +SUPPORT

Martin Stephenson returns to Stirling in support of his new album, 'California Star', which we're delighted to say, was recorded right here in the Tolbooth's studio. Just a year later, Mark set out on his second ultra-endurance expedition, travelling the length of the Rockies and the Andes - cycling 13,000 miles, and climbing the highest peaks in North and South America. Mark captured both journeys for BBC 1 documentaries. In the past year Mark has been involved in two major ocean rowing expeditions. During last summer Mark joined a team of six in an historic row to reach a former location of the North Magnetic Pole. In the last few months Mark joined another team to break the World Record for rowing across the Atlantic. They were 27 days and over 2000 miles into the expedition when disaster struck; they capsized and had to be rescued. When not on expedition, writing or at events, Mark works with a number of charities and is an Ambassador for the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Patron of Orkidstudio and the TUSK Trust, as well as a founding Trustee of The Active Earth Foundation. www.markbeaumontonline.com

BOB DYLAN & THE POETRY OF THE BLUES

PEGGY SEEGER

An evening with writer Michael Gray.

Born in 1935 in New York, Peggy's family connections are well-known in folk and classical music circles. She is Pete Seeger's half-sister, Ruth Crawford Seeger's daughter; and partner to Ewan MacColl, who wrote First Time Ever I Saw Your Face for her.

Fri 12 Oct, 8pm / £10/£8

This is more one-man-show than talk. With wit and style, the author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Song & Dance Man III: The Art Of Bob Dylan - definitive studies of Dylan’s 50-year body of work - uses great records and rare footage to show how hugely Dylan has been inspired by the blues and how much of its poetry has been smuggled inside his own, highly influential writing. Michael Gray’s events are always lively & spontaneous, witty and acute, using unpredictable slices of loud music to offer a thoroughly entertaining, fresh account of Dylan’s achievement and a thrilling exposition of blues & its poetry.

Fri 19 Oct, 8pm £14/£12

The MacColl-Seeger work was prodigious in its scope. From 1959 onward, they encouraged and set standards for the burgeoning UK folk revival. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, Peggy is considered to be one of North America's finest female folksingers. Peggy's performances are full of warmth and humour, laced with a sharpness of perception - don't miss this rare opportunity to catch Peggy on tour. peggyseeger.com

All workshops are free, see Summer Classes for more.

Across the Valley 6 June – 28 July

Preview 2 June, 7 – 9pm All welcome. The Changing Room is pleased to present a selection of local artist work from this years Forth Valley Open Studios. The Forth Valley Open Studios was first launched in the summer of 2010 and is an annual nine day event which takes place in the Forth Valley, Central Scotland. This year the event ran from 9 – 17 June with local artists, galleries and arts organisations opening their doors to invite the general public in to view their art works. The aim of Forth Valley Open Studios is to make art more accessible to the public, particularly within their local area. They do this by promoting local artists/makers and encouraging members of the public to visit the open studios and meet the artists.

Image: Lys Hansen

This interaction is mutually beneficial: participants have the opportunity to showcase their work and likewise members of the public gain access to work spaces and experiences that would not normally be available. The exhibition at The Changing Room will showcase work by leading artists and makers from across the Forth Valley. Highlighting the diversity and talent we have in the area, the exhibition will include jewellery, textiles, ceramics, photography, painting and much more. The Copyist Laura Edbrook

11 August – 6 October

Preview 10 August, 7 – 9pm All welcome.

Laura Edbrook’s practice looks to language and text as malleable material to be manipulated and presented as form. As game maker / game player, Edbrook will set up an arrangement that plays out the materiality of language – spoken, read and alluded to – following the rules of ‘the copyist’. The copyist can be identified as living simultaneously in two temporal dimensions, that of reading and that of writing. An irregularly defined train of plot-bound fragments will build narrative from poached (read) and manipulated (written) material for a new solo exhibition to be held at The Changing Room.

Image: Laura Edbrook & Ailsa Lochhead, (P)LAYED, 2012, DVD 38mins

Edbrook and Lochhead will present the results of their collaborative practice at ESW this summer. The Black Merkin, a crowd-authored novel co-edited and published with Norman Hogg. New Work Scotland 2010 at Collective, Edinburgh. Edbrook has produced commissioned texts for artists, exhibitions and publications and recently began working on the editorial team of MAP Magazine.

Edbrook is a Glasgow-based writer. Selected projects include Creative Initiative Residency at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop with Ailsa Lochhead.
