Welcome to 2010 and a New Year of musical gems at Tolbooth. We have some familiar faces to start off the year, like Dick Gaughan who returns with his timeless and important message and some new things for you to savour; I’m really excited about Kathryn Tickell’s first gig at the Tolbooth. We also have a couple of new initiatives for the New Year: our monthly Saturday afternoon classical music recitals and our new improvisational workshop, The Room. The Blend is back with a series of great roots concerts culminating with a Cuban dance special. Come and join us for a taste of salsa. Our classes and workshops carry on offering a chance to tap into your own creative impulses. See Stirling Arts Update for full details.

Step on to the Tolbooth’s stage with the backing of a fantastic jazz band and the support from the appreciative cabaret audience and you are the star of the show! If you love singing then this night is for you, even if you have never sung in public before, all you need is a sense of fun and a desire to sing. The open mic nights are friendly and informal and full of likeminded lovers of the beautiful music of Sinatra, Holiday and Fitzgerald. If you’re not ready to sing then why not come along as a member of the audience to enjoy the atmosphere and see what it’s all about. Wed 3 Feb, 8pm Wed 3 Mar, 8pm Singers: £5 Audience: £3

TOMMY SMITH’S YOUTH JAZZ ORCHESTRA SAT 6 FEB, 8PM £8/£6
Dick Gaughan is back at Tolbooth for the first time in two years with his ever-popular take on Scotland’s modern trad music.
The Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra is back at Tolbooth with their sensational sound after last year’s series of concerts.
At the cutting edge of Scottish music for over 3 decades as a guitarist, singer, songwriter, actor, musical director, composer, arranger, producer, engineer, he’s been there, done it.
One of the most talented, exciting and dynamic young jazz ensembles on the planet, their young age belies their skill and musical ability.
Whether as a band member with Boys of the Lough or Clan Alba, a collaborator with a who’s who of music, or as one of the hardest working solo performers on the music scene, Dick Gaughan’s work has consistently remained both innovative and challenging.
Under Tommy Smith’s unassuming leadership, musicians, some of them as young as twelve, have been encouraged, nurtured and directed into a highly disciplined, superbly creative unit where their personalities are allowed to develop and shine.
“one of the cornerstones of modern traditional music.” The Herald
Their enthusiasm for the music tumbles out of every live performance, as recent Tolbooth audiences will testify.
“smoulders as fiercely as ever.” The Scotsman www.dickgaughan.co.uk

MV & EE ‘BARN NOVA TOUR’ WITH THE DOOZER THU 11 FEB, 8PM £12/£10
It was 2005 when Matt Valentine and Erika Elder last brought their ancient-modern kaleidoscope of music to the Tolbooth as part of Le Weekend and it is great to have them back. Their music is a sheer joyful expression of the American tradition deriving as much from Jug bands and rural blues as it does from Neil Young, the Grateful Dead and Miles Davis. Over the years they have worked alongside many a troubadour including John Fahey, Bert Jansch, Thurston Moore, Pavement and even Cat Power. From their base in the Vermont woods they bring an old time honesty and warming front porch vibe to their singularly MV & EE music world. www.myspace.com/mveebummerroad www.thedoozer.com

IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP
WITH DUO ECOSSE
SAT 13 FEB & SAT 13 MAR 2 - 5PM £3
At last year’s Le Weekend festival a room was set aside to allow anyone to take part in open improvisational sessions led by the versatile and wonderful saxophonist Raymond MacDonald. So much fun was had by all and some surprisingly good music happened at these sessions that we decided we had to create a regular slot for The Room. These sessions are for everyone (no experience necessary) to drop in and play, listen and talk. Bring an instrument or make use of what we have in the room. Raymond MacDonald and members of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra will facilitate these sessions.

RAPTURE THEATRE PRESENT
HAMLET FRI 26 FEB, 7.30PM £10/£8 Rapture, one of Scotland’s most exciting theatre companies, present their special Celtic take on this legendary play.
GRAEME STEPHEN’S SEXTET SAT 27 FEB, 8PM £12/£10 Guitarist Graeme Stephen’s sextet is one of the most enthralling bands touring today.
Set in the contemporary Glasgow underworld, Hamlet is caught between the idealistic world of his university and the world of terror and death that his criminal family represent.
Fusing folk, jazz, classical and rock influences with flavours from Scottish and international traditions, the band has captivated audiences throughout the UK with its big themes, mighty grooves and bold musical adventures.
When his father dies and his ghost confronts him, Hamlet has to choose between family lies and world truths, the past and the future, life and death.
Graeme’s sextet features Ben Davis on cello, Mario Caribe on double bass, Stu Ritchie on drums, Fraser Fifield on soprano sax and Martin Kershaw on alto sax.
Modern music, innovative iconography and faithfulness to this great play, make Rapture’s production an unmissable event for fans of the bard from 12 years old to 102 years old.
“Stephen’s music speaks loudly of ambition, imagination, nous, and harmonic adventure yet teemed with the sort of tuneful realisation that swells the heart” The Herald

MARTIN SIMPSON FRI 5 MAR, 8PM £14/£12 Martin Simpson’s guitar playing is unsurpassed; he is one of the finest finger pickers and slide pickers of our time and was recently named one of the top artists of the decade by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Influenced by the recordings of Big Joe Williams, the Reverend Gary Davies, Blind Willie Johnson and Doc Watson, and the folk revival of the 1960’s, Martin has developed his own eclectic playing style and a repertoire all of his own. Whether playing American old-time music, blues, a Dylan song or his own material, Martin Simpson is unpredictable, individual and a guitarist of immense subtlety.
“Martin Simpson became a celebrity of the new folk scene by mixing skill with versatility.” The Guardian
GILDED BALLOON COMEDY NIGHT SAT 6 MAR, 8PM £14/£12 Terry Alderton is an outstanding and unpredictable comic: a tour de force. His improvisation, enormous stage presence, disregard for conventions, vocal dexterity and stunningly accurate impressions takes his show to another level. This mixture of interaction and set pieces makes each show an event, he’s one of the few comics who can bring a crowd to their feet, night after night. Described as “comedy’s best kept secret”, Essex-born Alderton, a former Perrier Award nominee, has been wowing audiences with his exuberant, loose-limbed physical comedy for several years now, with celebrity fan Eddie Izzard commenting on his ‘fantastic comedy mind’.
“...brilliant always funny. This is ruddy bloody close to the ideal comedy gig” The List

BAND FRI 12 MAR, 8PM £12/£10
MARTIN STEPHENSON & THE DAINTEES SAT 13 MAR, 8PM £12/£10
Kathryn learned the pipes in the traditional way from old shepherd musicians in outlying hill farms in Northumberland and her personal evocation of that landscape and its people has reached audiences all over the world.
In the mid eighties no student bed-sit was complete without a copy of The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths or The Wedding Present’s George Best...but dig a little deeper and you would find the classic debut album Boat to Bolivia by Tyneside band The Daintees.
Whether it’s the interweaving melodies of the two fiddles, the wonderful blend of pipes and melodeon or the excitement of the full band, this evening of emotive airs and captivating tunes is sure to delight and entrance.
The band went on to release a further three albums to huge critical acclaim and now 23 years after that debut we are proud to announce The Daintees very first appearance in Stirling.
Kathryn Tickell - fiddle and Northumbrian small pipes Julian Sutton (the Kate Rusby Band) - melodeon Joss Clapp - acoustic bass guitar Peter Tickell (Peatbog Faeries) - fiddle
Charismatic front man Martin Stephenson is joined by original members Anthony and Gary Dunn, along with percussionist Finn Macardle to perform their unique blend of folk, country, roots and pop.
“To say that Kathryn plays pipes is like saying that Shakespeare was a bit of a writer… one of the true stars of our music.” Living Tradition www.myspace.com/kathryntickellband

37 steps Gillian Cooper 13 February - 28 March Preview 12 February, 7 – 9pm All welcome The 37 steps is a project undertaken by local artist, Gillian Cooper. Encapsulating the speed of modern living, Cooper took photographs every 37 steps she made during one day. Recording the repetition and banality of everyday life, these images also capture unexpected moments of beauty often lost to us as we race through our existence. These source images have been used to create an installation involving textiles and projection. Having originally trained as an accountant, Cooper decided to listen to her artistic tendencies and went on to study textiles at Goldsmiths College, London. This work was developed whilst Gillian was craft practitioner in residence at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee. www.gilliancooper.co.uk
