SALTFISHFORTY & SPIERS AND BODEN Thu 1 Jul, 8pm £12/£10 Bringing together two irrepressible traditional music duos - one from Scotland and one from England - in a high octane blend of Celtic and English folk music cultures, Spiers & Boden and Saltfishforty take to the road for a unique series of double-headline dates, aided by the Scottish Arts Council’s Tune Up scheme which supports exciting and exceptional live music events. Orkney duo Saltfishforty, known for their Celtic verve and high energy performances, will release their long-awaited third album ‘Netherbow’ in early summer 2010 in advance of the tour. To date mainland shows by Saltfishforty have been limited to rare one off performances at Celtic Connections and a few lucky venues beyond. Spiers & Boden, featuring the 2010 BBC Folk Singer of the Year Jon Boden and founders of the genre-defying big band Bellowhead, have a string of awards to their name, have played festival main stages across the UK and Europe and represent one of the most popular line-ups in the thriving English folk scene. For both duos this will be their first full tour of Scotland.

SUMMER CEILIDHS Wed 14, 21 & 28 Jul 8pm Wed 4, 11 & 18 Aug 8pm £8 each 4 for £24
Our summer ceilidhs are always popular and attract everyone from children to grandparents and from the hardened ceilidh expert to overseas visitors. Combining Scottish music and dance our ceilidhs are a gentle introduction to ceilidh culture. With each night led by a ‘caller’ who will talk you through all the right moves, there is no need to worry about how to Strip the Willow. The Tolbooth ceilidh band features some of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians and is a wonderful opportunity to meet with friends and strangers and enjoy a great night out.
THE SUMMER SESSIONS Fri 16 & Sat 24 Jul Sat 14, Fri 20 , Sat 28 Aug 7-10pm FREE Fri/Sat evenings in the Tolbooth Café Bar The Tolbooth champions traditional music of every hue but never forgets that some of the most talented musicians in Scotland have learnt their craft from playing and listening at traditional sessions that happen throughout pubs and clubs across Scotland. The traditional session is an essential part of the basic fabric of the music and is for everyone to enjoy. Young and old, indifferent and brilliant, all have a role to play in the musical discussion that the session can inspire. This summer Tolbooth invites you along to its summer sessions to get a taste of the very backbone of traditional music. Some of Stirling’s fantastic local musicians will host these sessions, so if you are passing through, on your summer holidays or just looking to idle away the light nights of summer, pop up to Tolbooth’s café bar and enjoy the informal beauty of our summer sessions.

GROANBOX Fri 16 Jul, 8pm £10/£8 Groanbox are no strangers to the Tolbooth and after their last visit, were so inspired by the ghostly resonance of the building’s past, that they included a specially-written track about their experience on their last album, Gran Bwa. They may have shortened the name to Groanbox, but the trio - blues picker and vocalist, Cory Seznec, classically-trained accordionist and composer Michael WardBergeman, and former Be Good Tanyas drummer (and extraordinary percussionist) Paul Clifford, has expanded the fan base both here and abroad from their dynamic and hugely-entertaining ‘live’ shows.
Who knows but maybe this visit to Tolbooth will inspire them to write another album track.
“This is Americana with a twist...Groanbox are true originals” The Guardian “Absolutely fantastic, without doubt one of the best live acts I’ve seen.” Bruce MacGregor, Blazin’ Fiddles

TUNNG + SUPPORT Fri 23 Jul, 8pm £10/£8 We’re beside ourselves with excitement to announce the return of twisted pop wonders Tunng. Since last we saw them, the band have been on adventures both personal and shared, such as their ten-day voyage of discovery with Malian desert bluesmen Tinariwen, a unique collaboration that aimed to fuse the sounds of the two bands together. An experience that helped shape Tunng‘s approach to their music, “We learned that you don’t always need structure! As long as there is presence, emotion and groove. It taught us that everything is open and adaptable...” Come along and experience their emotion, groove and unique sound.

HEART IN HAND are, without a doubt, the brightest star to enter the UK scene in the last few years. They have stepped out of the standard metalcore mould to try and create a much more diverse, unique and melodic sound to that of their peers, a sound that puts every emotion out on the table.

THE HANDSOME FAMILY Thu 29 July, 8pm £12/£10
Mr & Mrs Sparks aka The Handsome Family bring their troubled tales of American life back to the Tolbooth. If you missed their last show you are in for a wondrous evening of beguiling mysteries in song and music. Their sharp and perceptive take on the American way is littered with downbeat characters and hustlers and creates and almost fairy tale vision. Their songwriting prowess has had them donned as the “Beatles of the folkworld” by the great chronicler of rock’n’roll Greil Marcus. Expect beautiful songs brilliantly and simply arranged in a magical sort of way. I wonder if this year they will pay a visit to their favourite Stirling graveyard.

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART + SPECIAL GUESTS The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a New York four-piece who play genius noisy pop songs with boy/girl vocals, blissful melodies, fuzz guitar and blistering drums. Despite only having been together for a couple of years The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are one of the buzz American bands of the moment. Tipped as one of five to watch in 2009 by Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber on ABC news, their self-titled debut album on Fortuna POP! collected every accolade under the sun and featured prominently in the 2009 “Best Of” lists of Pitchfork, NME and Rough Trade Shops, to name but a few. They wowed the crowds at ATP, SXSW, Primavera, Roskilde and The Isle Of Wight festivals and stormed the UK with some incredible tours, including sold out shows at London’s The Garage and Scala. Thrilling and insouciantly cool, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart might just be the most exciting indiepop band on the planet right now.

THE WILDERS Fri 6 Aug, 8pm £14/£12
It is five years since “the hillbilly hurricane from Kansas City, Missouri”, aka The Wilders, first arrived in the UK to start blowing us all away. Since then, they have won a reputation as one of the most highly-charged and entertaining acts to tour here. Following their first sensational sell-out run at The Famous Spiegeltent during Edinburgh Festival Fringe, they carried of a coveted Herald Angel (the equivalent off an Oscar) for their outstanding contribution to the event, and collected a clutch of five-star reviews. That led to television and radio sessions north of the Border, a headline slot at Belfast’s Open House Festival and their own show at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall during Celtic Connections (recorded and televised by BBC 2) and a further TV exposure when they appeared at the Hebridean Celtic Festival.
Their latest album, ‘Someone’s Got To Pay’ carried them to the finals of the annual Independent Music Awards in America, and went on to win Alt-Country Album of The Year category. The Sold Out signs went up when the band last toured here. The Scotsman told readers: “They generate the kind of tunes that should by rights leave vapour trails”. Long ago established on the US festivals circuit as a “white-hot” act, the Stateside quotes tell the same tale. “If this were old Salem, they’d be burned at the stake. They play like they’re possessed”, said one reviewer. www.wilderscountry.com

POKEY LAFARGE & THE SOUTH CITY THREE Thu 2 Sep, 8pm £10/£8
When the Pokey LaFarge travelling show glides into town, all The Way from St Louis, Missouri, everyone falls under the spell. He made a solo appearance at the Tolbooth last year and the reaction was amazing. This time he returns with his full knock-em-dead band. His songs are influenced by all that he admires from bygone days, yet turn out to be a wonderfully fresh and quirky kind of pop that combines delta-meets-appalachia writing with a big, big beat. Pokey and his band – The South City Three - were one of the outstanding highlights at this year’s Celtic Connections. They return to Europe straight from a main stage appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, to take their hot brand of “riverboat soul” to the Open House Festival in Belfast, Northern Ireland; Denmark’s
Tonder Festival, Leicester’s big Summer Sundae Weekender, and a second run at the worldfamous Edinburgh Festival. On its release this year, the band’s new album went straight to the Number 5 slot on the hugely-influential American FAR Chart compiled from monthly returns submitted by the movers and shakers among radio presenters and producers across the USA. www.pokeylafarge.net

MOISHE’S BAGEL Tue 14 Sep, 8pm £12/£10
Rip-roaring, foot-stomping, jazz-inflected klezmer and Balkan music from some of Scotland’s finest musicians. An intoxicating, life-affirming mix of Eastern European dance music, Middle Eastern rhythms and virtuoso performances. Formed in Edinburgh in 2003, Moishe’s Bagel combines the energy and passion of Eastern European folk music with the excitement and soul of improvisation. Boasting some of the best instrumentalists that Scotland has to offer (Salsa Celtica, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Celtic Feet, Scottish National Jazz Orchestra), we are just as likely to see them jamming in a late night jazz den, grooving at a forest festival, or enthralling an upmarket concert hall.

SAT 18 sep £14/£12 evening performance · £18/£16 Dark Holler Day ticket Furnace Mountain Furnace Mountain’s Fields of Fescue album (their fourth), established the band as one of the hottest on the circuit following its release at the end of 2009. Legendary BBC Radio 2 DJ, ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris played tracks from the album week after week describing the band as “wonderful” and saying the CD was “gorgeous”. Writing in The Herald, Rob Adams declared: “The American roots music motherlode just keeps producing treasure, none more exciting than this quartet. Furnace Mountain sound like a marriage between Be-Good Tanyas and the best of Nickel Creek - except with true Appalachian soil caked onto their boots”. Get set to have a great experience in the company of this fine band from the very heart of rural Virginia. www.furnacemountain.com
Longway Longway are one of Scotland’s best kept secrets, and that’s mostly because they are in such high demand all over the UK. Hugely respected on the European Bluegrass circuit, they have played all of the major festivals and are said by many in the business to be “as good as any of the big names” on the circuit. Certainly, there are very few (if any) UK-based bluegrass units who can stop visiting musicians from America in their tracks and hold their attention and that has happened many times when Bob Stevenson (guitar and lead vocals), Robin Wallace (mandolin/banjo and backing vocals), Jim Hyndman (banjo/ mandolin/dobro and backing vocals), and Hugh Kelly (double bass) take the stage and start to turn on a very polished style. Influenced by all the greats – from Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs to The Dillards and with two albums to their credit, they play bluegrass that’s as “real deal” as it gets. www.longway.org.uk

Dr Syntax versus the Paperweights Mick Peter 5 June - 31 July Preview 4 June, 7 - 9pm. All welcome Dr Syntax versus the Paperweights is a new solo show by Glasgowbased artist Mick Peter. Using sculptural objects the presentation will transform the space into an environment of confounding and intriguing surfaces. The interface between abstract public sculpture and architectural decoration is what he pits against a clearer narrative and representational impulse, a combination that generates material and formal tensions. As is common in much of his work Peter has based this exhibition on literary source material, in this case a freewheeling exploration of William Coombe’s mischievous Dr Syntax (amongst other things). This exhibition will evolve and adapt both the illustrative and written content of this work as starting points for new sculptures.
Mick Peter is among the 39 artists chosen to showcase the best in contemporary British art at The British Art Show 7. Organised by the Hayward Gallery, The British Art Show will tour to four different cities across the UK (2010-2011). www.mickpeter.com
