As ever, moving into a New Year, also gives room for reflection on the past year, and we have had some truly memorable moments in 2014... The commission The Bruce 700 grew into a major performance, and the response from the audience was truly special...and so we are so thrilled that Celtic Connections is to include it in the 2015 festival.
Also, the band James came back to the Tolbooth, and so enjoyed their experience writing new material here, they sneaked in not one but two very different but equally wonderful gigs in advance of their arena tour - an acoustic performance in the Tolbooth and a full on rock gig in The Albert Halls with the full line up.
Delighted too to get two nominations in the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2014 - Tolbooth for venue of the year, and Stirling Schools Scots Song Project for community project of the year.
Both unique and equally unforgettable.
And our 2015 trad music programme has another fantastic line-up already in place, including first time performances from Rant, Salt House and Rura, but also welcome return visits from Peggy Seeger (this time with her sons Neill and Calum MacColl) Lau, McGoldrick, McCusker, Doyle and many more favourites.
Finally, must mention Strange Behaviours in November, our Music Development Officer Kenny Bates' chance to put his particular stamp on the programme with a week-end of original, operated by Stirling brilliant musicCouncil makers.

The Bruce 700 at Celtic Connections
Wed 28 Jan, 7.30pm Glasgow Royal Concert Hall ÂŁ18 The premiere performance of The Bruce 700 took place in June 2014 in The Albert Halls. Commissioned by the Tolbooth for Stirling Council to mark the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, Celtic Connections have included a second performance as part of the 2015 festival. This epic creation by revered Highland piper and Gaelic scholar Allan MacDonald features a cast of some 50 musicians, on pipes, strings, brass, vocals and percussion.
4
Combining his wealth of historical knowledge with grand contemporary flair, the music, on which MacDonald collaborated with cellist and arranger Neil Johnstone, vividly and movingly evokes the sounds, actions and emotions of battle. As well as Allan and Neil Johnstone, performers are: Angus MacDonald, Iain MacDonald, Aidan O'Rourke, Lori Watson, Innes Watson, Christine Hanson, Fraser Fifield, Dick Lee, Duncan Lyall, Mary Macmaster, Donald Hay, Daniel Thorpe, Griogair Labhruidh, Kathleen MacInnes, Patsy Reid, Duncan Lyall, Craig
Muirhead, Chris Gibb, Siobhan Anderson, Thomas Zoller, Masaki Kato, David Ross, Allan MacDonald Jnr and Rod Paterson, together with young players from Stirling, including the Stirling and District Schools' Pipe Band and No More Cages, members of the Tolbooth senior trad group. We are incredibly proud of The Bruce 700 and we wouldn't want you to miss the chance to experience it. Tickets are available from www.celticconnections.com and 0141 353 8000.

The Handsome Family
Mon 9 Mar, 8pm ÂŁ16 The Handsome Family have been feted by the likes of Ringo Starr and covered by artists such as Jeff Tweedy, Cerys Matthews, Christy Moore and Andrew Bird.
Their songs are a series of unique and wondrous compositions that, as Jeff Tweedy once said, are the "product of two beautiful brains."
In a career that spans twenty years they've toured the world in their own charmingly DIY fashion one car, one hotel room, one stage.... night after night after night - and in that time they've performed as a duo, with a band and have collaborated with such folk-royalty as Eliza Carthy, country legend Charlie Louvin and indie-kings like Nick Cave and Jarvis Cocker.
Brett Sparks lays bear a succession of deceptively simple melodies and dexterous instrumentation that combine with his wife's lyrics to a startlingly haunting effect and are delivered with a voice that glides between a Cash-like timbre and a southern high and lonesome plea.
12
Increased interest has been sparked in their music, after the use of their track 'Far From Any Road' was used
www.stirling.gov.uk/tolbooth www.facebook.com/tolboothstirling
as the theme for Matthew McConaughey's hit HBO gothic anthology series 'True Detective'. Their set list will feature tracks from their latest release Wilderness which blends Appalachian holler, psych-rock and Tin Pan Alley inspired melodies to conjure up a world where David Attenborough meets David Lynch in a Honky-Tonk bar at midnight...now that's got to be seen!
Trillium

almost a decade, when Kris approached Boo about recording the song “Harvest Gypsies” as part of his classic debut album “Black Water”. Produced by mutual friend and Scottish folk musician

Des Clarke The Trouble With Being Des
Thu 14 May ÂŁ14/ÂŁ12 Glasgow-based comedian Des Clarke takes to the road with his sell-out Fringe show, The Trouble With Being Des. Des hosted the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which was watched by a world-wide TV audience of millions. He also has a large following for his popular daily Scotland Capital Radio Breakfast Show. An award winning stand up comedian who first appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe as a teenager, since then, he has travelled the world with his warm and offbeat brand of humour. 18
In his latest show, Des reveals he is at a crossroads in his life and has some things he needs to get off his chest. This time it's personal. There have been some major bumps in the road though. All part of the Trouble With Being Des.

Bruce Molsky
Fri 22 May, 8pm £13/£11 Bruce Molsky stands today as one of the finest oldtime fiddlers in the world, the defining virtuoso of Appalachia's timeless folk music traditions. In addition to a prolific solo career, performing on fiddle, guitar, banjo and vocals, Molsky frequently joins genre-busting supergroups, like the Grammy-nominated Fiddlers Four, Mozaik, and Donal Lunny. He was on Nickel Creek's farewell tour, and performs in a trio with Aly Bain and Sweden's great Ale Moller (who after their last stormer of a gig, will be back in the Tolbooth in November). Whether performing an ancient reel from Virginia, a Swedish waltz, or a loping cowboy ballad, it’s
a very personal sense of authenticity that deeply informs his music. Linda Ronstadt hears that same honest beauty in Molsky's singing. She placed his singing of "Peg'n'Awl" on her Rhapsody playlist, alongside Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, and Chet Baker. "Bruce has has that ability to track deep emotion in his voice, without any unnecessary adornment," she says.
Molsky is truly old-time's master craftsman, sharing his passion for his music in a way which truly connects to his audience. "The Rembrandt of Appalachian fiddle." Darol Anger, fiddler tickets 01786 27 4000

With November seeing the Demo Fund at the Tolbooth come to a close, we can proudly look back at some of the amazing music the project has generated.
2014's schools’ Battle of the Bands was a fantastic night – the local acts totally blew the judges and the audience away and made it a tough decision to crown a winner, Cameron
Roxburgh eventually taking the title and with it some recording time and a set at Fused Festival. The BOTB will return in the first half of 2015, if you’re in a band or act and think there may be some interest in your school for a heat this year, please get in touch via batesk@stirling.gov.uk
