Welcome Welcome to the new programme for the start of 2013. We had some truly memorable performances last year, but so excited about what we've already got lined up for you this year... Though not taking place in the Tolbooth, the arts team has been instrumental in working out a programme of events for the RSNO's Out and About Week in March. As well as the first performance by the RSNO in The Albert Halls for nearly 10 years, there is a massive range of activity in schools, nurseries and the community. Also in a collaboration with the Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers, we are running workshops for 16-25 year olds, with an opportunity to take part in the Way of the Drum performance (see Arts News for details).
We have some great gigs in the Tolbooth- the legend that is Paul Brady will be here in April for his only Scottish date. This really is a unique opportunity to see his solo performance in such an intimate setting. What better way to spend Valentine's Day than in the company of the irrepressible Blazin' Fiddles. More welcome returns include the outstanding Martin Simpson, and following their success at Stirling's Hogmanay, Miniature Dinosaurs. After having to cancel the last date, Andy Kershaw will be here in March to share his incredible life stories. Our comedy programme continues to blossom, if you want to catch Jimeoin then you'll need to move fast, as it is almost sold out as we go to print. We also welcome a little magic - after seeing his sell-out show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, we invited Pete Firman to bring his show Hoodwinker to the Tolbooth. We can guarantee he will astound you and leave you in fits of laughter as you enjoy his skills as master of both magic and comedy. Looking ahead there are loads more just confirmed for later in the year - so keep an eye on the website.

HEIDI TALBOT Sat 26 Jan, 8pm £12/£10
Ireland has many great female singers, but Heidi Talbot's breakthrough solo release, 2008's In Love + Light, swiftly assured her promotion to the premier league. Her artful mix of traditional and contemporary material, reinvented classics and littleknown gems, and above all Heidi’s achingly bittersweet, spun-gold voice, have won glowing reviews across three continents, a US Indie Acoustic Award and a Best Female Vocalist nomination in the Irish Music Awards.
‘A voice that’s both awestruck and tender’ New York Times
Launching her new CD Angels Without Wings, Heidi will be joined on stage by renowned multi-instrumentalist/producer John McCusker and the inimitable guitar playing of Ian Carr. heiditalbot.com

MARTIN SIMPSON Fri 1 Mar, 8pm £12
There is no doubt that after 35 years as a professional musician Martin is, right now, better than ever. Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving. There is no-one who has more successfully combined the diverse elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music than Simpson. His 15 years living in the US were well spent. In addition his own songwriting has produced some real gems, from the truckstop epic, “Love Never Dies” to the profoundly moving “Never Any Good” and "One Day".
for best album in the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. He has been nominated an astounding 29 times in the eleven years of the awards - more than any other performer - with 11 consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice. martinsimpson.com

THE ADVENUTRES OF ANDY KERSHAW Wed 27 Mar, 8pm / £15
Andy Kershaw has no off switch. Already he’s lived ten lives to everyone else’s one. He was Billy Bragg’s driver and roadie one day and presenting Whistle Test and Live Aid the next. He is amongst the UK’s most decorated broadcasters and was the central figure in the popularisation of world music. A born rebel and a maverick, he’s combined his passion for music with a lunatic curiosity and an instinct for frontline journalism, reporting for the BBC and the broadsheets from the world’s most extreme countries – Iraq, North Korea (he’s been four times), Haiti, Angola and Rwanda during the genocide. Whether it applies to foreign adventures, romances, motorcycles, nervous breakdowns or relationships with a piece of music, Andy has always lived by his most reliable maxim: if you’re going to have one, have a big one. Andy comes to the Tolbooth for an evening of conversation about his eventful life, accompanied by film.

Sense Makes No Sense David Sherry 16 February - 12 April Preview 15 Feb, 7 – 9pm All welcome.
David Sherry’s art practice centres around preformatted ideas relating to everyday life and depicting ordinary experiences from a new perspective. Exploring beliefs, social interaction and real experience. Making works that re-access the acceptance of common values and exploring the thin vale of sanity and the contradictions in life. Sherry gains, through his work, an insight into the psychological diversity of any singular situation, fragmenting what is accepted and analysing a basic moment in day to day life. Conveying the idea that nothing is permanent or stable, questioning what is understood and re-evaluating a collective perspective. For his solo show at The Changing Room Sherry will present new video works alongside a new series of drawings & paintings. www.dave-sherry.com GALLERY OPEN GALLERY OPEN TUESDAY-SATURDAY, 10AM-6PM TUESDAY-SATURDAY, 10AM-6PM OPEN LATE: 7 & 20 OCT | 17 NOV | 8 DEC ADMISSION FREE
