Welcome Welcome to a new year of music and performance at the Tolbooth and to one of the best line-ups of any season we have ever had. So it is with some sadness that I have to announce that this will be my last season of bringing great music to you at the Tolbooth. On January 31st I will be leaving to develop new things in new pastures. I have been at the Tolbooth since it opened 9 years ago and I have to say those 9 years have been some of the most rewarding of my career. The Tolbooth and the wonderful team here have allowed me the ultimate music fan’s fantasy, to be able to choose musicians to play at the Tolbooth and to be able to work with young and old alike to support them in developing their potential or even just to share a fantastic musical moment with them. Music to me is the ultimate social experience and it is the sharing of that experience that is most important. The Tolbooth has allowed me to share my love of this most wonderful of human endeavours.

There are so many people for me to thank that it makes it almost impossible but really I want to thank everyone who has ever been a part of the Tolbooth in any way, the people of Stirling, all the musicians that I have had the pleasure to work with and to create with, everyone that has participated in any of the Tolbooth’s workshops and projects, people who have travelled from afar to be a part of the Tolbooth and of course the Tolbooth staff who have supported me through all the crazy schemes I have cooked up (they are a wonderful bunch). I wish them and the Tolbooth all the very best for the future. The music lives on, the rest is noise.

MOGWAI

Wed 26 Jan, 8pm £17.50

Slow-burn, post-rock kings Mogwai come to Tolbooth on the first night of their world tour promoting their new album, “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will”.

The performance at the Tolbooth will be the first date in the band's world tour promoting the album and we cannot wait!

Formed in Glasgow in 1996 with the goal of being the 'loudest band on the planet' Mogwai quickly built a following throughout Scotland and the rest of the world.

"...the band create a wall of sound

Fifteen years later and they continue to push the boundary of where art meets rock with their sheer brutal, almost ambient, often lyric free sound.

optimism in fragile instrumentation

that reaches beyond the tumultuous guitars, discovering twinkling and sensitive synths...awe inspiring" The Guardian

Last summer they joined forces again with the producer Paul Savage, the man behind their exceptional debut album Mogwai Young Team, to produce their new album “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will” Tickets for this event have been on sale since Oct 2010.

RODDY WOOMBLE Fri 28 Jan, 8pm £16/£14

Familiar to many thousands of music fans as the front man in the Scottish rock band Idlewild, Roddy Woomble is also a celebrated solo songwriter & performer. The softer, lyrical vein of Roddy’s songwriting saw his first solo release, My Secret Is My Silence, winning rave reviews across both the rock and folk press. He was also a key instigator behind the acclaimed 2007 album Ballads of the Book, bringing together leading Scottish poets and musicians to collaborate on new songs. Roddy went on to record and release the album ‘Before the Ruin’ with Kris Drever and John McCusker in 2008, which they toured extensively around the UK to much praise, including a sell out gig at the Tolbooth.

Roddy’s new album, recorded on the isle of Mull and produced by John McCusker, will be released in the spring of 2011 and this performance will feature songs from that album, alongside tunes from ‘My Secret is My Silence’, ‘Before the Ruin’ and several Idlewild numbers. WITHERED HAND & WOODPIGEON + SUPPORT Fri 4 Feb, 8pm ÂŁ10/ÂŁ8

Edinburgh's alternative folk artist, Withered Hand makes a very welcome return to the Tolbooth. Anyone who managed to catch his performance last time around couldn't have failed to be impressed by the sheer beauty of his music and the tender, autobiographical and downright hilarious lyrics of his songs. I would suggest that a brief listen to his last album, 'Good News', will be all that you need to persuade you to get your ticket quick to this very special and intimate performance.

Woodpigeon are a musical collective from Canada whose semi-acoustic folk-pop hides a deeper and darker soul that is tormented with repressed longings and troubled fantasies. As frontman Mark Hamilton explains, "I wanted to write murder ballads but they all came out really pretty."

"Woodpigeon: they make the creepy sound charming." The Guardian

He has recently been receiving regular airplay from the likes of Gideon Coe, Marc Riley, Tom Robinson and Vic Galloway and has recorded live sessions on BBC Radio Scotland and BBC 6 Music.

SKIP ‘LITTLE AXE’ MCDONALD Thu 10 Feb, 8pm £12/£10

SOLO PERFORMANCE Who has released records on all these labels: the legendary r’n’b label OKeh, the nu-blues stronghold Fat Possum, the key rap originators Sugar Hill, Tommy Boy and 4th & Broadway, Real World Records and the innovative On-U Sound? Which musician links Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaata, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, James Brown, Robert Plant, Mark Stewart & The Mafia, Sinead O’Connor, and Megadeth?

Little Axe is the return to the blues that Skip grew up with and learned from his father. The sound is raw, stripped down and intense, the message in the lyrics as important as Skip's virtuoso musicianship. The acoustic tradition of the blues crashes into the 21st century with Skip's use of effects that create his unique brand of Dub Gospel blues.

The answer to both questions is Skip McDonald. Skip made his name as an integral part of the Sugar Hill house band playing on the most influential early rap classics and as part of Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound crew he has made some of the most adventurous and praised UK music of the last twenty years.

KILLIN / STIRLING

the blend extra / march 2011

the blend extra march 2011 celebrating traditional music Welcome The Blend festival was set up and launched in 2003 as part of the newly opened Tolbooth’s commitment to the traditions of music. Over the past eight years the festival has developed a strong and important ethos and brand locally and nationally for supporting the continued development of Scottish traditional music. The festival has also nurtured a distinct focus on the other roots from around the world, juxtaposing world traditions with Scotland’s own. This year's The Blend Extra takes that even further. Venues: Tolbooth, Jail Wynd, Stirling | McLaren Town Hall, Killin With support from:

james grant with special guest karen matheson & friends Friday 4 March, 8pm £14/£12 James Grant has been a key fixture at the Tolbooth ever since it opened with his wistful take on contemporary song, so for Blend Extra we have asked him to gather some of his very special musical allies to produce an evening dedicated to the art of the song. Karen Matheson has been another key part of the Tolbooth’s programme and James has asked her for tonight’s show to perform her interpretations of some of his songs. They will also be joined by Donald Shaw and Fraser Spiers. A very beautiful way to kick off Blend Extra.

unusual prospects the concertina Saturday 5 March, 1pm £8/£6

Tolbooth

Continuing our support for traditional music we take a look at one of the more unusual instruments that colour traditional music’s sound world, the concertina, or squeeze box. It’s one of those instruments that make you wonder how it’s possible to play, those buttons are all so small and so close together. Steve Turner is an absolute master of the concertina and for the first of our Unusual Prospects events he will be joined by Simon Thoumire and Steve Sutcliffe. The event is an informal performance and masterclass. Come along, ask questions and listen to some masterly music.

the nordic fiddler’s bloc samling Friday 18 March, 8pm £14/£12

+ Tolbooth

The Nordic Fiddler's Bloc have blended three individual styles from Norway, Sweden and the Shetland Islands but still allow their individual, distinct flavours to come through in a sound that is unique, meaningful, intense and invigorating. Samling is a four-piece band that binds together Norwegian and Scottish Gaelic vocal music traditions. Part of a new movement within the European roots scene known as Nu-Nordic, they take the two traditions and weave them together into a rich tapestry of harmony and rhythm with unexpected twists.

Tolbooth

With Timothy Neat, Ian Balfour Kerr & Allan MacDonald. 2011 marks 100 years since the birth of the great gaelic poet Sorely MacLean and Blend Extra have brought together this event as a celebration of the Raasay man. MacLean’s poetry sings with the sounds of the Raasay landscape and the over bearing presence of the Cuillins of Skye. His work captures the life on the islands with its harshness and beauty but also places it in the context of a European and global struggle with the sense of change that people have no control over.

facing the atlantic julie fowlis with rosa cedròn Saturday 26 March, 8pm £14/£12

Tolbooth

This very special project, put together by Julie Fowlis and the Tolbooth, looks at two very different areas of the world that share historical ties, cultural connections, and the fact that they face out to the vast waters of the Atlantic. Galicia in Northwest Spain and the Western Isles of Scotland, brought together with music and song. Julie Fowlis is one of Scotland’s very special voices and also a committed bearer of the Gaelic tradition. Her latest CD was recognised at the Scottish Trad Awards as the best of 2010 and she has also been a recipient of the best singer award at the 2008 BBC Folk Awards. Rosa Cedrón began her career in the Galician band Luar Na Lubre and her sophisticated vocals and cello slip easily between her traditional background and a more contemporary European sound. This project sees voices from the Gaelic and Galician traditions linking and exploring each other’s sound worlds. The whole day will be dedicated to the opportunities in language, the language of song, music and of poetry. Natural Identity 9 - 19 February

Since September 2010 children and teachers from St Ninians and Doune Primary Schools in Stirling have been working together on a project called Natural Identity. They have collaborated with visual artists Lesley Creevy and Andrew Mackenzie and poet Julian Colton as well as with environmental specialists from Stirling Council, Forth Environment Link, Scottish Natural Heritage and Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. The aim of Natural Identity was to allow the children to investigate and learn about the natural environment around them, recording this through the visual arts and poetry. This exhibition showcases the inspiring work they created. This project was developed through Stirling’s Cultural Coordinator Programme. For further information please contact Clare Hoare, Cultural Coordinator hoarec@stirling.gov.uk

GALLERY OPEN TUESDAY-SATURDAY, 10AM-6PM OPEN LATE: 17 & 26 MARCH ADMISSION FREE

Smith/Stewart

5 March - 30 April Preview 4 March, 7 - 9pm. All welcome. Stephanie Smith and Edward Stewart have been making work collaboratively since 1992. Their work can be tough and confrontational. Fundamental concerns revolve around human relations and what people are capable of doing to one another, both physically and psychologically. Early video installations involved the dual interaction of a man and woman (the artists), often in extreme situations requiring mutual complicity and trust. For this exhibition Smith/Stewart wish to explore a new direction, where their interaction with others forms the basis of the work. Through giving specific instructions and working with particular groups, they aim to explore the boundaries of collaboration, power, intimacy, acting and reality.
