Let it grow

ou’d be hard-pressed to find someone who opposes ProMedica’s plan to move its headquarters Downtown. But the health care system’s proposed parking garage at Promenade Park is another case altogether.

The debate heated up Jan. 6 as vocal opponents and equally vocal supporters got the chance to speak before a City Council committee meeting. The conversation will continue at 1 p.m. Jan. 14 as Council is set to hear more from ProMedica. A vote could come as early as Jan. 20.

ProMedica, which is asking the city for free park land as well as various tax abatements, estimates the move will bring 1,000 employees, 100 of them new hires and 600 of them new to Toledo. Robin Whitney, ProMedica’s vice president of property acquisition and development, told Council that ProMedica has done its homework and feels Promenade Park is the best option for the proposed six-story structure.

Safety and convenience were among the reasons cited.

Alternate plans have been offered, but the garage can’t go more than one level underground at the park because of the Maumee River water table, she said, and existing Downtown parking garages are already too full to absorb all the new employees. Even if they could, consuming so much Downtown parking could impact Thomas F. Pounds potential future development at other riverfront locations, warned Cindy Kerr of the Downtown Toledo Improvement District.

ProMedica’s proposal calls for taking 14 percent of Promenade Park for the garage, leaving the rest as public green space. Plans also include potential retail space on the front of the garage and outdoor seating areas overlooking the park, and I was pleased to learn the garage would be open to the public on nights and weekends.

Green space is important, but Promenade Park has been underutilized for years.

I live Downtown and enjoy the park, but it seems to me we’d be trading a little green space for a lot more amenities and a lot more land use. Last year, the park was closed January to June for construction, but in the last half of the year, the city issued 11 permits for a total of 23 days of event use, according to spokeswoman Stacy Weber.

Another alternate suggestion is to build a new garage on a Port Authority-owned lot near Vistula garage and have employees utilize the underground walkway between Vistula and the KeyBank building, a five-to-seven-minute walk. One issue there is that access to parts of the walkway is cut off when buildings are closed. Imagination Station, at the middle of the walkway, is closed on Mondays and closes at 5 p.m. the rest of the week. Not very compatible with a typical work week.

Yes, walking is healthy. But the appeal of a centralized campus is also understandable.

What about older or disabled employees? What about visitors? People new to Downtown are often intimidated by parking. Will they be expected to navigate unfamiliar tunnels to attend a meeting?

On Jan. 6, speakers from both sides pleaded with Council not to sacrifice the city’s long-term vitality with a short-sighted decision. The trick will be agreeing on what will ensure that long-term viability both sides want. There are still questions to be answered; in particular, we need a clearer estimate of how much the project will cost the city. But here is an entity with money, motivation and a plan. Let them grow. “What’s missing from Downtown is not open space. What’s missing from Downtown is investment,” commercial developer Steve Serchuk told Council.

We can have ProMedica and still keep Promenade Park. ProMedica’s plan already offers that. O

I am positive that Steve Machcinski and Jamie Dickman nudged somebody upstairs for that one.

The Walleye games were the big draws, but I decided to experience Winterfest differently. I wanted to see what it was like the other 95 percent of the time, when the Walleye weren’t on the ice.

I chose 2 p.m. on a Tuesday, and it was the perfect choice. Temperatures were in the 40s, with a strong, cold wind, no snow falling and none in the forecast. I brought local photographer and Instagram superstar Eric Shanteau with me. I wanted his eye to capture the true beauty of Winterfest.

The stadium was empty, the main gates wide open and the admission was free. As a father of four, I knew what was going on the moment I heard the first cowbell: travel hockey.

The ice rink that covered the Mud Hens’ infield featured a game between two teams of 9-yearolds. One squad was coached by former Toledo Storm player Gordy Hunt, the other came from Canada. There was music, a live video feed on the scoreboard, nervous fathers yelling instructions, hockey moms ringing bells and plenty of smiles.

There were no mascots, no remote-controlled balloon dropping prizes — just an ice rink full of kids playing a game of hockey and having a moment they will never forget.

Winterfest not only showcased Toledo hockey and Fifth Third Field and brought tens of thousands of people to Downtown Toledo — in the winter — it also supplied something.

Winterfest created lifetime memories for every person who walked through the gates.

For 10 days straight, Napoli and his incredible team gave thousands of people a once-in-a-lifetime experience right here in Toledo.

Decades from now, one of the boys I watched play hockey on that Tuesday afternoon will tell his grandkids about that game. His story will detail how blue the sky was, how cold the wind felt, how proud his parents were and, depending on what team he was on, the score. You don’t forget an experience like that, even if you weren’t victorious.

Opposition to ProMedica’s controversial plan to build a parking garage on public park space Downtown is intensifying as Toledo City Council prepares to decide if it will allow the project to move forward.

Area residents and local community leaders filled Council chambers Jan. 6 to hear and discuss the health care company’s plan to build the structure in Promenade Park on Summit Street.

Robin Whitney, vice president of property acquisition and development at ProMedica, gave a presentation to Council’s Youth, Parks, Recreation, Community Relations and Education committee centering on the company’s plan to build a six-story parking structure in the southwest corner of the park.

The structure — which would occupy 14 percent of the park’s surface area and 120 feet of the park’s 500 feet of frontage along Summit Street — is a key part of ProMedica’s $40 million plan to move up to 1,000 employees into the former Toledo Edison Steam Plant and KeyBank building Downtown.

A group of protesters gathered outside One Government Center prior to the meeting to express opposition to ProMedica’s plan to build the structure at the park.

Dave Shugar of Maumee held a sign reading “Don’t Park on our Park.”

“This is our heritage, this is our town,” he said. “If we don’t protect it now, it’s lost forever. … If the [proposed parking garage] is a deal breaker for them, they’re not negotiating in good faith with the Toledo community, they’re not being fair to us.”

In her presentation to Council, Whitney said, “We believe that this campus we’re talking about in Downtown Toledo is going to be a wonderful addition to our community. It’s going to be truly transformative — not only to what we think we can do for Downtown and the community, but for ProMedica as well.”

The plan will take administrative employees from 17 different locations — largely suburban — and put them Downtown.

“We looked at some other suburban opportunities — and there are benefits to that — but we really think that the community revitalization component of coming Downtown really puts this over the top as our best solution,” she said.

Following Whitney’s presentation, Council members had the opportunity to ask questions and make statements about the plan.

“I’m so excited about the opportunity this presents for our city, I can barely contain myself,” said Councilwoman Lindsay Webb. “This is the largest revitalization this city has seen in certainly the last decade, maybe two, and maybe my lifetime.”

Webb said she understands ProMedica’s concern for employees’ safety.

“We have a long way to go in terms of perception related to safety in Downtown Toledo,” she said, noting a recent walk she took to an event at the Valentine Theatre.

“I had my two young sons with me, and I did not feel safe — I did not feel safe. That’s a reality,” she said.

Webb said that people not feeling safe Downtown will diminish the odds of them returning and spending more money or moving their business there.

“It is a concern, and I don’t want to dance around it,” she said.

Members of the public were then given a chance to voice their opinion on the matter, with a majority saying they are in favor of ProMedica moving its headquarters Downtown but are opposed to building the garage at the park.

In an interview with Toledo Free Press prior to the meeting, Thomas called ProMedica’s proposal “a beautiful plan.” Turning down ProMedica’s offer to spend money on developing the park would be shortsighted, he said.

“We need infrastructure put in Promenade Park. We’ve waited 35 years for infrastructure at Promenade Park — we can’t even keep pools open.

There’s no chance the city is going to develop Promenade Park the way we need it,” Thomas said. “People say, ‘Well, you just go walk.’ Well, the problem is that our competition is the suburbs, and in the suburbs parking is right next door,” he said.

After the meeting, Whitney stopped short of calling the proposed parking garage at Promenade Park a “deal breaker” to moving Downtown but firmly stated the company feels it is by far the best option.

“I think we’re very clear and unwavering that we need safe, convenient parking. So far, this is the only solution that we have found that fits our needs. … There are ideas, but the ability to really do those and not jeopardize something else or even just get site control, I haven’t found any solutions that meets all those needs. At this point, we’re pretty focused on this solution being the right one. I think we’ve explored all the options that were addressed or brought up today,” she said.

Council will further discuss ProMedica’s plan to move Downtown at 1 p.m. Jan. 14 in its chambers at One Government Center. A vote on the proposal could come as soon as Jan. 20. O

“Promenade Park is my front yard and it’s my backyard,” she said. “We use Promenade Park for exercising, for relaxing, reading, listening to the birds and especially taking in the beautiful view of the Maumee River. … Downtown Toledo looks like a giant parking lot already — it really does. Wendy Gramza, president of the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce, spoke in favor of ProMedica’s plan.

“As you know, ProMedica is proposing to make a $40 million investment in Toledo by moving their corporate headquarters with about 1,000 jobs to Downtown Toledo, with more than half of these employees being new to the city of Toledo. It kind of seems like I should be able to just stop there, but I won’t. … It’s important to remember that these numbers do not include the strong likelihood that other companies, shops and restaurants will come Downtown to support these new employees.”

Bill Thomas, president of the Downtown Toledo Development Corporation, said suggestions to use other parking garages or build one near other buildings are not considering the long-term success of Downtown.

As many parts of the nation deal with tension between police and citizens, newly sworn-in Toledo Chief of Police George Kral promises to “walk the talk,” and said he is eager to make community engagement and trust his immediate priorities.

Kral, 48, was promoted Jan. 5 by Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins in a ceremony at One Government Center, with Kral’s wife Teresa and two adult sons standing by.

“Wow, this is arguably the most humbling moment of my professional life,” said Kral, who received a standing ovation inside a packed Toledo City Council chamber.

Kral is the 34th person to serve as chief of Toledo Police Department (TPD) since 1867, although the position has changed hands 40 times via acting chiefs and some who served more than once, according to Sgt. Joe Heffernan, TPD public information officer.

Kral’s promotion does not become official until City Council

approves it, and it has one year in which to do so. Both Heffernan and Stacy Weber, city public information officer, expect that to happen sometime this year, as there are several other city directors who need confirmation, and all will likely happen at the same time.

“I’ve been wanting this position for a long time,” Kral said afterward, adding that he hopes to serve in this role for nine to 10 years.

From Beantown to T-Town

The Boston-raised Kral came to Toledo in 1987, joined TPD in 1990 and began steadily working his way through the ranks.

He was promoted to sergeant in 1995, lieutenant in 2006, captain in 2011 and deputy chief one year ago.

He received degrees from the University of Toledo, University of Phoenix and Tiffin University.

The son of a World War II Navy veteran, Kral also served in the Navy — 1984-87, plus four more years in the reserves — and it was during his time in San Diego that he met his future wife, Teresa, a Toledo native. n KRAL CONTINUES ON 9

It was during his service working temporary stints in shore patrol that he realized he liked protecting people. As soon as Toledo offered the civil service test, he jumped at the opportunity. Even then, he knew

“To be honest, ever since I was in the police academy, I always thought that being the chief would be the ultimate way to pay back the community,” he said.

Moton transition

Collins, who retired from TPD after 27 years, said he first noticed

Kral’s character and potential as a fellow officer in the late 1980s when they met during a disciplinary hearing at which both testified.

“I knew he had the tools then,” Collins said.

Kral learned a lot during his oneon-one time with Moton, but what was the best advice he received?

“Probably not to try to do it all myself,” Kral said. “Coming up this past year in 2014, [Moton] allowed me to assemble a leadership and management team that is fantastic.”

Deputy Chief James O’Bryant has spent 29 years with TPD. He praised Moton, who spent one year at the helm, for “bringing the gap” between administrations.

“He didn’t come in and tear everything down and create new,” O’Bryant said. “He capitalized on the good things we had been doing, made sure we continued on that track and provided great leadership for that year he was here.”

Colleagues react

Sgt. Mike McGee was one of Kral’s first sergeants when Kral worked the North End around 1993, and said Kral is intelligent, well-rounded and adept at police work.

“You want to see somebody from the department take the helm,” McGee said, explaining that current staff intimately know and understand the department’s history and tradition better than someone hired from outside.

“We’re family.”

Lt. Todd Miller has only worked with Kral for about a year, but already believes in him.

“He’s got a lot of character,” Miller said. “He wants to do what’s right. What he said when he gave his speech, about promotions are a lot of nepotism, the ‘good old boys’ club, he’s not like that.

I think he honestly wants to find the best person for the position and he just wants to do a good job. I believe in him 100 percent. He’s a very truthful person.

He’s got a lot of integrity.”

Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp has known Kral for many years and said the city and county will continue to work closely.

“He has vision, which is absolutely necessary to have success,” Tharp said. “He knows that there’s so much information within the ranks and he’ll reach down and gather that information and ask for input from all the officers and staff he has working for him.

That’s one of the many reasons he’ll be successful. We’re lucky to have him as a police chief.”

Kral’s goals

Kral thanked his predecessors for their push for technology, saying Toledo has the “best crime analysis unit in the United States.” He wants to continue employing new technology, using his officers’ expertise more, and empowering the community to create partnerships and foster trust. Kral has already staged meetings with various community groups and plans to schedule more.

“Trust is a key,” Kral said. “If there’s

a distrust between the citizens and this department, Toledo will never realize its true potential.”

Kral believes there is a level of trust already there, and offered assurances that he would treat every person with dignity and respect. He knows there will be issues, he said, but promised to share information and learn from his mistakes.

Having wanted to be chief for a long time, he already has a clear vision of an ideal TPD. “A department that racially mirrors the city, a low crime rate and a citizen base that is trusting and supportive of its police department,” he said.

National tension

During his remarks at the promotion, Collins commented on the strained relations between New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York Police Department, calling the situation “embarrassing” and “unfortunate,” while stating that de Blasio has “never spent one hour in the shoes of a law enforcement officer.”

“Being a police officer today is probably one of the most challenging positions a person can have,” Collins said. “[Officers] have the toughest job in the world. We are the peacemakers.”

Kral was former Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre’s administrative sergeant when Navarre served as deputy chief, and Navarre said he believes Kral is taking over at the right moment.

“The police chief has to walk a very delicate line because you’ve got very strong feelings on the police side and you’ve got very strong feelings on the community side,” said Navarre, now chief of police in Oregon. “The mayor of New York, in the eyes of the rank and file, has stepped across that line and has taken sides, and that puts the police chief in a horrible position.

George recognizes that. You heard that in his remarks [Jan. 5]. I think he put a lot of emphasis on the importance of keeping the community apprised of what is going on.”

The future

Kral acknowledged the difficulties his profession places on family life, and joked to his wife that this promotion would be his last. Though he still loves the seafood Boston offers, Toledo has been his home for a long time.

“Nowadays, law enforcement is law enforcement,” he said. “You just tailor and benchmark the same policies in the city you’re working.”

And if his oath wasn’t enough, Kral offered the mayor one last, simple pledge.

Oregon amends name for Bucks NOW lOaNiNG! on Diamonds,

It started with a simple Web post and ended with little Oregon, Ohio, on the lips and in the headlines of some of the biggest names in national sports media.

After watching Ohio State upset Alabama in a college football playoff game Jan. 2, Whitmer High School teacher Matt Squibb posted a petition at change. org. In it, he called on the city of Oregon to change its name in support of the Buckeyes as they headed to the title game versus the University of Oregon Ducks. Fellow Whitmer teacher and Oregon native Mark Rabbitt backed him.

“I grew up in Oregon, Ohio, and love the city, but for the day of the ‘Big Game’ I am asking the city council to make a proclamation to change the name of the city for one day,” the petition reads. “Call it Buckeye Town, Ohio City, Brutusville, whatever, you get the point. Let’s not leave anything to chance here! Change the name and support the Buckeyes!”

People started sharing the link on social media and it wasn’t long before Oregon Mayor Michael Seferian caught wind.

“We’ve heard about [the petition].

We’ve gotten calls. We’re going to do something with it,” Oregon City Administrator Michael Beazley said Jan. 2.

On Jan. 5, Seferian made it official, issuing a proclamation declaring the city would be renamed “Oregon, Ohio Buckeyes on the Bay, City of Duck Hunters”

through Jan. 12 and that Jan. 5-12 was “Ohio State Buckeye Week.”

The name is a play on the city’s motto “Oregon on the Bay, City of Opportunity,” and a reference to the city’s dedicated population of outdoorsmen as well as the Buckeyes upcoming opponents.

The proclamation also notes that the city of Oregon had its name before the state of Oregon, which is why he opted to keep the name.

“Mike is having plenty of fun with it,” Beazley said. “[We discussed whether to change] ‘Oregon’ or the slogan part of our name. The mayor felt that changing the slogan part was more appropriate. We are proud of our name and have had it since long before there was a state of Oregon.”

The petition, which collected 2,066 supporters before it closed, also called for Clay High School in Oregon to change its colors for the day. Both Clay and the University of Oregon sport green and yellow.

However, Oregon City Schools superintendent Lonny Rivera said he probably won’t go that far. Instead, he plans to refer to the district as The Oregon City Schools — a nod to The Ohio State University — while retaining school colors.

That way it’s “kind of humorous, but also shows support,” he said.

“I’ve been a lifelong resident of Oregon and many of our residents bleed green and gold,” Rivera said. “That doesn’t change anything, but gives Ohio State kudos by capitalizing the ‘The.’ We have fans of many different schools, but

Ohio State is part of our state and it’s neat to acknowledge that.”

Rivera said the district was planning a school spirit day Jan. 12, featuring a contest to see which school can wear the most Ohio State fanwear.

The story was picked up by media across the country, including ESPN, Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports.

Ironically, neither Squibb nor Rabbitt are Ohio State fans. Rabbitt is a fan of Ohio State’s archrival University of Michigan while Squibb is a fan of that other football game, particularly Manchester United.

“We’re just two guys going on a website and sparking something that most people would think is probably a really stupid thing, but to have so many people supporting it and then hopefully rooting for Ohio State to win it all is pretty great,” Rabbitt said. “The Big Ten has been seen as a conference that can’t compete with the SEC or Pac-12. Now Ohio State has beaten the No. 1 team in the SEC and are facing the No. 1 team in the Pac-12 and we have this opportunity for Ohio State to win the national championship. I think it’s pretty good to see a community come together and support them.”

Other Ohio cities are also getting in on the fun. Also on Jan. 5, Urbana, Ohio, located an hour west of Columbus, announced it would drop its second “a” to become Urban, Ohio, on Jan. 12 in support of head coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes. And Dayton’s Oregon Historic District changed its name to the Buckeye District for the week. O

a little bit more relevant in starting those kinds of conversations.”

Morey said the films were chosen because they didn’t think a lot of people had seen them already and they spread positivity.

“We were looking for positive images so that this would be a positive conversation rather than adding onto stereotypes and MOREY talking about the same stuff that we’re always talking about,” she said.

Allan said films like “Amreeka” or “Sin Nombre” raise the issues of what it means to be more welcoming and immigrant-friendly.

The event also offers visitors the opportunity to learn the history of the Ohio Theatre and Event Center.

“I used to perform there in high school,” Allan said. “It’s exciting to see a vibrant, cultural space be brought back to life in Toledo. I think it can really be a great … source of pride for the neighborhood.”

Tickets are available for $5 per screening in advance at ohiotheatretoledo.org or for $7 at the door. A pass for all seven films costs $25.

The festival is a great way to support Toledo, Morey added.

“When people come to events like this, they’re not only doing something great with their time, but they’re also helping Toledo and its economic development of small businesses,” she said.

Nextronex moves into new facilities in Holland

Nextronex, producer of the patented Distributed Architecture solar inverter system, has moved into a new facility constructed for the company in Holland. The firm’s new home will serve as its corporate headquarters while housing all manufacturing, testing and development functions.

Nextronex moved into its new home in December and is now fully operational. The 10,000-squarefoot facility located on Geiser Road off Eber Road just north of Airport Highway is a much better setup for the company, said CEO Jay Troger.

“Our operations were spread across two facilities, and we had outgrown both of them,” Troger said.

“The new facility consolidates our operations and has features that will improve our manufacturing efficiency.

The new location also provides convenient highway access.”

Nextronex was previously located in incubation space at the Nitschke Technology Commercialization Complex on the College of Engineering campus of the University of Toledo.

Nextronex manufactures commercial and utility-scale solar inverter systems for applications of 150 kilowatts and larger. Founded in Toledo in 2008, Nextronex has supplied inverters for large-scale solar installations in numerous U.S. states and several foreign countries. Its largest order to date was for 24 inverters, which were used at the 4.2-megawatt installation in Napoleon, Ohio.

Troger said that 2014 was a transitional year for the company due to legislation passed in Ohio that severely hurt solar business in the state.

Prior to those changes in the law, the majority of the company’s sales had been for projects in Ohio.

Yet Nextronex currently has its largest backlog of orders for inverters ever, Troger reported. The entire backlog is for out-of-state business and will be delivered by the end of April to meet deadlines, he said.

“We’re the final assembly point for the inverters and have a much better production flow in our new facility,” Troger said.

Nextronex receives most of the components for the solar inverters from five key suppliers, most of which are located in Ohio.

Other Nextronex products include the Generation II RAY-MAX Power Podium inverter system introduced in 2014, which is 60 percent more powerful in the same product enclosure, Troger said. The RAY-MAX Power Podium was recognized as a Top 100 product of 2014

by Solar Power World magazine.

Two members of the Nextronex team, James Olzak, vice president of manufacturing, and Peter Gerhardinger, vice president of technical sales, are original founding members of the company. Olzak is also a company board member and investor.

Nextronex has included two new provisional patented technologies that provide the unique approach of integrating solar power with battery storage.

Such a setup would involve significant savings for power users, according to Troger. The company is testing its inverters with both aqueous and lead acid batteries at its new facilities.

The company’s power podiums were included in the Toledo Zoo’s Anthony Wayne Solar Array, which won Solar Builder magazine’s Project of the Year in 2014 in the ground-mount category.

When she became owner of Atlas Bridal Shop, Jeanne Fairchild knew she would have the position for a long time.

Years later, she still has no retirement plan in place.

“I truly enjoy coming to work every day,” she said. “There’s not a morning that I get up and … don’t feel like going to work. I genuinely love it.”

Atlas Bridal Shop, 4895 Monroe St., was opened in 1927 by Anna and John Szaroleta. It specializes in bridal gowns and dresses for bridesmaids and flower girls, as well as mothers’ gowns.

In the beginning, the store featured original gowns made by the owner who dreamed of turning it into a family business. Anna even sent her son, Chet, to school to be a pattern maker before he was drafted into the U.S. Army, Fairchild said.

“When he came back from the Army, he actually wanted to be a doctor but she said no,” Fairchild said.

The shop was originally on Lagrange Street and had a cutting room in a lower level. Customers would choose a design and Chet would make it.

Chet and his wife Dorothy eventually took over the shop from his parents before Fairchild, who is not related, took over in the 1980s. At the time, Fairchild was going into nursing, which she balanced with managing the shop for a short time with the help of two of Chet’s daughters, Lorrie Lewandowski and Lynn Szaroleta.

“I gave up nursing and haven’t

looked back,” she said.

Fairchild became the sole owner more than a decade ago, a move she was confident she could handle after learning from the previous owners.

“I was surrounded by the family so I was never afraid,” she said.

“Dorothy and Chet have both passed away now [but] I just feel like I try to run the business like I want to make those two proud. I have so much respect for them.”

Fairchild said the values and vision of the shop are the same today as they were almost 90 years ago.

A big part of the business is the interaction between Fairchild and the future brides.

“I love getting to know each girl.

I love to hear her story. I love to hear how she met her fiancé, where she’s getting married, what makes her wedding unique,” she said. “I’m genuinely interested in these girls.”

Today, the shop includes dresses by designers including Allure Bridals, Sottero & Midgely, Maggie Sottero, Alfred Angelo, Bill Levkoff and, Fairchild’s favorite, Mori Lee. “We’ve carried them forever; we have one of their earliest account numbers,” she said. “They’re reasonably priced, they’re well-made and their style is very versatile.”

In addition to wedding attire, Atlas Bridal Shop also sells dresses for proms. Blue by Atlas Bridal Shop will open within the next couple of weeks in order for teenagers to prepare for one of their junior and senior years’ biggest events. n ATLAS CONTINUES ON 15

Fairchild said her employees feel like family. There are 16 long-term employees working at the shop. The

operations supervisor, Tiffany Strock, has been with the company for half her life; she began working there part-time when she was 16.

“Working here is like working with your family; we’re like a big, happy family,” Strock said.

There are also two seamstresses who have been with the company for more than three decades.

“We know a lot of everyone’s per-

sonal business, whether we want to or not,” head seamstress Jo Hafner said.

“But it’s nice because if you have any type of family problems or something dramatic, everyone sticks together.”

Fairchild agreed.

“I have the greatest bunch of people working for me and it’s very much like a family; we’re very much involved in each other’s lives and, because of that, we work as a team,” she said. O

Couple aims for 800 weddings in ’15

Jason Kelley and Laura Spiess met while working at a pizza parlor in 2010. Nearly five years later, they are the brains behind JL Entertainment and bookthatdj.com.

They are also in the middle of planning their own wedding.

“I’ve found that we’re more picky because we see the same things over and over,” Kelley said. “The biggest thing was finding a venue. We don’t want to have our wedding at a place where we’ve worked at.

“It’s stressful any way you look at it,” he said. “Planning a wedding is stressful.”

After the pizza place where they worked closed, the couple began planning open-mic sessions, karaoke and comedy contests with their business, JL Entertainment.

During this time, Spiess got certified as a wedding planner.

Eventually, the couple began managing and handling the booking for Graystone Banquet Hall in Perrysburg.

“That became our place of business, I guess,” Kelley said. “The great thing is we live across the street.”

The two collaborate using their individual skills: Kelley likes to work with people and Spiess dives into the small details of their business.

The couple has a panel made of dry erase boards they hang in their living room and call their “Brain Board.”

JL Entertainment, which bookthatdj.com was launched through in 2011, offers professional sound and event planning. Other options include a photo booth, chair covers and, coming soon, a catering service.

In 2013, Kelley was voted best disc jockey in Toledo in a local poll.

“I don’t necessarily consider myself the best DJ in Toledo. There [are] a lot of great DJs,” he said. “But I do love that all the people that know me and appreciate me went out and voiced their opinion.” n COUPLE CONTINUES ON 19

“You have multiple age groups, multiple types of people, multiple vibes throughout the entire evening,” he said.

“It’s the DJ’s job to provide a backdrop for that and create energy. ... I feed off of people’s energy, whether they’re having

a good time or a bad time.”

Kelley said he tends to tune out songs he doesn’t like when seeking that energy.

“I like when people are happy and, at the end of the day, that’s what makes me happy,” he said. “I’m not listening to the music; I’m feeling the vibe and watching the people.”

Flower crowns, colored gowns among current trends

With so many websites dedicated to planning weddings and creating unforgettable events, and so many bridal shows featuring all the latest styles, it would be easy for a bride to become overwhelmed when planning the big day.

Local experts in the wedding business provided some insight as to what trends brides may most want to keep in mind as they plan their 2015 event.

According to Lia Colapietro, a custom floral designer in the Toledo area, flower crowns have become a big trend recently.

“Big, over-the-top flower crowns started showing up last season. They are a romantic or fun touch for the right bride,” Colapietro said. “I recently outfitted a future bride with a floral crown for her engagement photos.”

The top accessory she creates is the bouquet, and another trend she loves is the statement ribbon. Bouquets accented with long, flowing trails of specialty ribbons in silks, velvets and more are gaining popularity, Colapietro said.

Asymmetrical and flowing bouquets are also becoming popular, and lately she has been designing floral cuffs for the mothers of the bride and groom.

“They are a nice twist on a traditional corsage,” she said.

Another trend, which Colapietro hopes will stick around for a long time, is sustainability. She grows some of her own flowers and loves adding an accent of locally grown foliage to make an arrangement really stand out.

“Brides are very savvy about checking out trends on various websites,” Colapietro said. “There are many sites out there devoted to inspiration. Because we live in a smaller city, you see a lot of the same trends rolling out for a season or two. I would love to see more focus on color trends and then see how a couple can pull together flowers and decor to reflect their own personality.”

Brides are also starting to bring color into their wedding gowns, said Jeanne Fairchild, owner of Atlas Bridal Shop in Toledo. Ivory and champagne are popular colors and some brides are now asking for blush pink.

Fairchild said lace is popular and it is the shop’s most requested fabric.

Backs are getting lower and lower on the gowns, she said. All silhouettes are popular, from slim fit and flares to large tulle ball gowns. Many of the ball gowns Atlas is selling have interesting skirts, such as sparkle tulle and ruffles. Beaded belts are very popular and can be worn with every silhouette.

Designers are showing long fitted lace sleeves for spring 2015.

Manufacturers are starting to show headbands, but Fairchild is not sure that Atlas will regularly sell the look quite yet. The shop has purchased a few that can be worn either across the forehead or on the top of the head.

“Brides looking for a formal gown with a train can expect gowns to start at $900 and go up from there,” Fairchild said. “Informal gowns without trains can be found in the $200 to $500 range.”

As for bridesmaids’ dresses, Atlas is selling a lot of floor-length chiffon and cocktail length with all-over lace.

More and more brides are choosing a color, but letting each maid choose her own gown, which is beneficial to the bridesmaid because each girl can choose a style that flatters her figure and suits her personal style.

Bridesmaids can expect to pay between $150 and $220 at Atlas for their gowns, Fairchild said.

“Participating in a wedding can be very expensive,” she said. “There’s the gown, shoes, personal prep the day of the wedding (hair, makeup, nails), shower gift, wedding gift, and possible travel expenses. When asked to be in a wedding, you aren’t just saying ‘Yes to the dress.’”

Jenny Dever of Toledo, who is planning her wedding for June 6, said trends didn’t even enter her mind when she was picking out her dress and accessories. Some of her friends that were getting married were going with vintage styles, but she felt they did not look right on her. She had her mind set on a white, mermaid-style dress, but inadvertently ended up choosing something that is trending — she fell in love with an ivory lace ball gown with a tulle skirt.

“I didn’t even realize the dress wasn’t white until someone told me, and I had to compare it to the white one before I could even believe it,” she said. “The color and style aren’t what I had planned at all, but you never know what you like for sure until you try it on.” O

Calligraphy writer gives invitations ‘touch of class’

Laura Brown, the scribe behind Signature Scribe & Silhouettes, picked up the calligraphy pen several years ago but has had no formal training in handwriting.

What began as a way to make a little cash as a stay-at-home mom evolved into a business creating hand-lettered wedding invitations, menus and BROWN books as well as everything from a die-cast firetruck for her friends’ children to a family tree.

She officially opened Signature Scribe & Silhouettes last spring, but has been writing calligraphy — or as Brown likes to call it, “vintage handwriting” — for the past four or five years.

She said the wedding invitation is one of the most important aspects of the wedding — one that brides often put off until the last minute. The bulk of her business is being there for brides who have a million other things to do besides those pesky envelopes and invitations.

“People forget sometimes that the invitation is a peek at showing what the

event is going to be like,” Brown said.

“Brides worry about first impressions.

This gives people a little hint of what’s to come, and I think brides would want that little extra touch of class.”

Brown’s lettering is not the gothic style that “you can barely read,” she said.

She calls her style “old-fashioned.”

Not a lot of people are in the business. When she started out, she had to research companies in Ann Arbor, Detroit and Cleveland. “There’s not a whole lot out there,” she said.

She doesn’t advertise and relies mostly on word of mouth, Facebook and wedding shows. She attended a budget bridal expo a couple of years ago, and said the experience blew her mind.

“People just love it,” Brown said.

“People want to stand and watch me.

They are oohing and ahhing. Everybody likes pretty things. [I realized] if I write everyone’s names, then they would probably keep that. So I took my pen and ink and notecards and when a bride would come by, I’d write their names for them. It goes up on the fridge and everybody says ‘Who did that for you?’ So when it comes time for invitations, they’ll think of me.”

Mardelle Shaffer hired Brown for her invitations, signs, menus and more for her September wedding. She had nothing but complimentary things to say about the finished product.

“We were really pleased with everything,” Shaffer said. “It really helped step up the look of everything for my wedding. It made it more classy and elegant, especially for the invitations that set the tone for your wedding.”

Some brides like to put a special twist on the invitation and add a wax seal.

One of Brown’s clients used a seal and it worked perfectly, she said.

Brown said she is trying to grow her small business but still needs the flexibility to care for her husband and children, ages 1 and 4.

As she builds her wedding clients, she has been doing other side jobs, including a family tree, the lyrics to a song and a baby book.

“I definitely have room for a lot of growth,” Brown said. “The funny thing is you watch someone do calligraphy, it’s very slow. It’s almost like drawing. I want it to come out like I’m handwriting.

It doesn’t take me nearly as long as you would think.”

Brown enjoys Renaissance weddings and believes that’s her market. She’s also there for the bride who “doesn’t want to mess around with the envelopes.”

“You know you have a bunch of other stuff to do and I can have it for you in a couple weeks,” Brown said.
