A talk with Archer, Bob and H. Jon

Utility players

T

here has been a flood of news swirling around local utilities — electric, natural gas and water. Randall Frame has been named regional president of Toledo Edison for FirstEnergy Corp. Frame will take control after the completion of the proposed merger of FirstEnergy and Allegheny Energy, as early as Feb. 1. As Toledo Free Press Senior Business Reporter Duane Ramsey reported, Frame will be responsible for approximately 400 Toledo Edison employees in Northwest Ohio but not directly for any power generation employees at the Bayshore or Davis-Besse facilities. Frame has worked at FirstEnergy for 28 years, joining the company in 1982 as an engineering assistant. In 1990, he was promoted to engineer and in 1994 was named industrial marketing supervisor. In 1997, Frame was promoted to director of sales, and in 2004 was promoted to director, Energy Delivery Supply Chain. He was named as director of Utility & Corporate Sourcing, Supply Chain, in 2009. A. Smith, regional president of ToThomas F. Pounds ledoTrent Edison, will be relocated to The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company. Smith is a good man and strong leader; his presence on many local boards will be missed, and we wish him well. On Jan. 26, Columbia Gas of Ohio announced a 12 project, 32-mile natural gas infrastructure upgrade in Toledo for 2011. As Special Sections Editor Kristen Criswell reported, the upgrade represents $18 million in investment for Toledo and is part of a 25-year, $200 million investment across Northwest Ohio. By the project’s completion, Columbia Gas will have invested $2 billion throughout the state and replaced roughly 400 miles of natural gas lines in Northwest Ohio. For this investment, Columbia Gas has hired and contracted 12 employees to install the new lines. It is estimated that for every dollar spent on the project there is a $1.60 economic impact in Northwest Ohio, according to Chris Kozak, communications and community relations manager. Obviously the city will greatly benefit from this work and investment. On Jan. 25, Toledo City Councilwoman Lindsay Webb, in a technically allowed but faint-hearted maneuver, left Council chambers rather than cast a vote for a proposed rise in water and sewer rates (a proposal she helped craft). Rather than vote against the proposal to kill it, or for it and leave the tiebreaking vote to Mayor Mike Bell, Webb timorously vanished before the vote. As a result, a very necessary but very unpopular proposal that would have been politically tied to Bell now sits and stews while water infrastructure continues to deteriorate. This was not a thoughtful strategy; this was Webb reacting without considering the consequences. City business is just that — a business — and it needs to be treated as such, not toyed with to make vague and unsupportable political points. It is a good thing Council is not in charge of the electric and natural gas companies in Northwest Ohio; nothing of import would be accomplished in a timely fashion. Let’s hope Webb and Council get plugged in and find a way to move forward, with expedience and the serious-mindedness this deserves. O Thomas F. EDUCATION CHAMPIONS

Editor’s Note: Toledo Free Press, United Way of Greater Toledo and 13abc’s “Bridges” with Doni Miller are profiling 12 education initiative programs in Northwest Ohio. This is the third story in the series. By Kristen Criswell Toledo Free Press Special Sections Editor krapin@toledofreepress.com

CLIPP, Collaborative Learning and Instructional Pre-school Project, provides free kindergarten readiness to low-income families in Toledo. The program started in 2002 and is a collaboration between Head Start and Toledo Public Schools (TPS). “The premise for this is No. 1, getting children ready for kindergarten,” said Sue Culver, assistant director of the program and former TPS principal. “The other thing is to keep them and retain them in Toledo Public Schools. Show them so they are used to the school, they know the principal and the teachers … and that will hopefully retain them in TPS.” CLIPP started after Arlene Tucker, director of the program and then-principal at Franklin Elementary School, noticed her kindergartners were starting school between a 3½- and 4-year-old ability. Tucker

approached the school board about having 4-year-olds come in three days a week for pre-kindergarten classes and the board asked her to expand the idea to outside her school as well, she said. The first year the program served roughly 60 kids at Franklin and Nathan Hale Elementary School. CLIPP now serves 275 to 300 students in 10 classes at seven different locations, Tucker said. For children to qualify for CLIPP they must be 4 years old by Sept. 30 of that current school year and their families must meet Head Start’s income eligibility, at or below 100 percent of the poverty level. When students enter CLIPP they are pretested to see what they already know, Culver said. The data is then used to help the teachers instruct. “We show the teachers how to teach using the data,” Culver said. “If you know Johnny is doing poorly in beginning sounds, you need to do that with him at the center. If Suzy knows her sounds, you need to take Suzy and move her up the scaffolding.” CLIPP teachers come from Head Start and many of them have two-year associate degrees, Tucker said. As a result, the curriculum is designed for any teacher — experienced or new to the profession — to teach, she said.

“We have a guided plan throughout the day and the teacher’s job is to get in the material but in a developmental way,” Tucker said. “We don’t want to drill and kill. It’s still appropriate for 4-year-olds and is fun.” Results from the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy (KRA-L) test given to all incoming kindergartners, shows CLIPP students are entering prepared for school. Tucker gathers and aggregates KRA-L data from the entire system and breaks it down by school, classroom and child, she said. The data is given to the kindergarten teachers so

they know what they need to focus on with their students. The information is also used to critique CLIPP and compare its students to all incoming kindergartners, Tucker said. In the 2009-2010 school year, the average KRA-L score for TPS was 17.25, out of 29 possible points, and the average CLIPP student’s score was 17.20. It’s the first time the district average has scored higher than CLIPP students, Tucker said. She noted, however, that the district-wide average includes all students, while CLIPP averages include

only those at or below 100 percent of the poverty level. Statistically, children from poverty don’t score as high, Tucker said. When comparing CLIPP’s averages with TPS schools that have a 90 percent or higher rate of free and reduced lunches, CLIPP students scored much higher. Schools with a high percentage of free and reduced lunches scored an average of 15.23 on the KRA-L. “What we’ve done is eliminated the poverty factor,” Tucker said. “Our kids have kept with other TPS kids regardless of where they came from.” n CLIPP CONTINUES ON A7

January 30, 2011 n CLIPP CONTINUED FROM A6 Head Start provides teachers and materials for CLIPP’s curriculum, while TPS selects the curriculum and provides administrators and overhead such as space and janitorial services. Culver said she and Tucker meet regularly with Head Start and TPS about the program, so the two are

constantly “bouncing balls in the air” to get the job done. Tucker and Culver negotiate with six different unions for CLIPP, three each from TPS and Head Start, but the pair doesn’t find it to be a problem. “It’s a nice little juggling act. We never had a problem doing that when we were principals. It’s a dance you

learn, but it’s not something that’s a roadblock,” she said. “I’ve found everyone very willing to compromise as long as the purpose is the right thing; this is for the kids it’s not anything for a personal gain.” CLIPP has an operating budget of $100,000 annually, which mostly covers administrative costs and minimal supplies, Culver said. for the program comes from three separate entities; $25,000 from Head Start, $25,000 from TPS and $50,000 from Title I. “We try to keep it on a shoestring because money is an issue,” Tucker said. “We don’t have money, but that’s not a reason not to do something. So we look at how can we use money that is already being spent and make it work. Head Start is in existence, and [TPS] is in existence, we just share resources.” Tucker and Culver would like to see CLIPP implemented in every TPS elementary school, free to every student, they said. The biggest roadblock to reaching more children and providing more children with kindergarten readiness is funding and space, they said. Currently CLIPP isn’t in all the TPS elementary schools because there is no space in the schools for a CLIPP classroom. “We have some empty classrooms, but as the school system tries to cut back on their buildings and cut teachers, we end up getting crunched,” Tucker said. “If you close a building, those kids are going to go into the empty rooms. If we’re in one of them, we get bumped out. Toledo Public Schools’ needs supersede our needs, even though we’re Toledo Public, because [CLIPP is] not a mandated program.” Tucker and Culver would also like some form of free kindergarten readiness programs implemented statewide in every public school, to prepare younger children for K-12 education and to prevent them from experiencing culture shock. The pair has been working with different organizations and government leaders with the hope of providing kindergarten readiness for more students. Studies have shown that early childhood education pays off by cutting dropout, juvenile delinquency and prison rates, Tucker said. “You don’t build a house without a foundation and this is a foundation for children as a stepping stone to get to a higher level,” Culver said. With Head Starts throughout the state, Tucker and Culver don’t see why that organization and other school districts in Ohio couldn’t at least collaborate. “People look at early childhood as if it isn’t necessary, but kindergarten curriculum is very aggressive. It’s really what use to be first grade,” Tucker said. “There are some that say we should change kindergarten, but until that happens we can’t ignore it. Otherwise we’re just setting them up for failure. It is what it is, let’s get the kids ready for it.” O

Adelante event highlights Latino student retention By Sarah Ottney

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer news@toledofreepress.com

More than 100 area Latino students gathered at the Main Library on Jan. 21 to discuss barriers faced by their peers to staying in school. With the highest high school dropout rate in the nation, at 18 percent, Hispanics are facing what Executive Director Julia Torres Barden of local nonprofit Adelante Latino Resource Center calls an “education crisis.” Substance abuse, getting or getting someone else pregnant, getting a job, needing to work to support their family and difficulty in school were among the reasons students offered for why people they knew dropped out of school. The students — from Toledo Public Schools (TPS), Perrysburg, Sylvania and St. Ursula — participated in discussion groups, visited a college fair and heard from Toledo City Councilman Adam Martinez and Woodward High School Principal Emilio Ramirez. The students also heard from six local teens, members of The National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) Lideres Initiative for young leaders, who have been conducting a community needs assessment since November. The study is being funded through a $10,000 grant from NCLR, the largest national Hispanic advocacy organization in the U.S. Adelante is one of four organizations across the country to be awarded the grant. The others are in Houston, Chicago and Washington, D.C., said NCLR’s Berenice Bonilla, who was in Toledo for the Jan. 21 event. As part of the 10-month initiative, the team will travel to Washington, D.C., in March to present its findings and speak to members of Congress. The group will return to Washington, D.C., in July for a national youth summit. The group also plans to present its findings to Mayor Mike Bell and Toledo City Council. Members of the team — representing Waite, Woodward, Sylvania Southview and St. Ursula — were trained on research methods and interviewed 25 people on camera about Hispanics and education. Ruben Hernandez, a junior at Waite High School, said the interviews allowed him to see new perspectives. “I knew my story, but this opened my eyes to see the community, not only from my perspective, but through everyone else’s, from the community

as a whole,” Hernandez said. Despite their varied backgrounds, the team has gelled well, said St. Ursula junior Bridget Buckley. “I think what’s important is we all see the importance of what we are doing, and the importance of getting all these other kids to see the importance of staying in school, so we all kind of came together for the same purpose,” Buckley said. Nearly half of Latinos in the TORRES BARDEN United States are under age 25, according to the NCLR. In Ohio, there are approximately 42,100 Latino youth between 15 and 24, comprising 19 percent of the Hispanic population in the state, according to Adelante. Local nonprofit Leadership Toledo is also conducting a community survey in partnership with Adelante to address the Latino dropout rate. To participate in the confidential 10-question survey, visit tinyurl.com/ latinodropout. Results will be shared by May. Barden said she hopes the findings of both studies will help Adelante focus its outreach efforts. “If we are our nation’s largest minority and we’re the youngest as well, then I see a very angry generation in 10 years,” Barden said. “I see increased challenges for Toledo’s economic development, I see lower property values for the region, I see challenges in creating jobs if you don’t have the skilled work force, I worry about increased crime and violence statistics, and ultimately about our regional pride.” The national dropout rate for Hispanic students in 2008 was 18.3 percent, compared to 9.9 percent for blacks and 4.8 percent for whites, with the percentage of Hispanic dropouts ages 16 to 24 consistently higher than blacks or whites from 1972 to 2008, according to a December report from the National Center for Education Statistics. Hispanics made up 18 percent of the population but contributed 41 percent of the dropouts in 2008. Only 10 percent of Hispanic high school dropouts have a GED compared to 20 percent of black dropouts and 30 percent of white dropouts, according to a May report from the Pew Hispanic Center.

Bonilla said the Latino community faces many challenges, including high poverty levels, high pregnancy rates, low access to resources such as SAT classes and a large immigrant population. Many students will be the first in their families to go to college, with no one to help them navigate the steps. “It’s not a problem that exists in a vacuum; it’s a problem that is part of a mix of challenges we’re facing today,” Bonilla said of the dropout rate. The TPS graduation rate for Latino students hovers between 60 and 70 percent annually, with black students graduating at a similar level, said Jose Luna, TPS Hispanic Outreach Coordinator. Anita Gordillo, a sophomore at Waite High School, said her mother has a second-grade education, was married at 14 and had her first of 11 children at age 15. Only two of Gordillo’s six older siblings have graduated high school; she said she wants to graduate and go to college to set an example for her younger siblings. “They’re going to need someone to look up to,” Gordillo said. “I don’t want it to be just for me; I want to do it for my family. I have these great opportunities and I’m not going to be by myself.” For more information, visit www. adelante.org or www.nclr.org. O

City appeals Docks appraisal By Kristen Criswell Toledo Free Press Special Sections Editor krapin@toledofreepress.com

As the city prepares to sell the property known as The Docks, it is appealing the area’s most recent tax appraisal. David McDowell, commercial appraisal supervisor in the Lucas County Auditor’s office, told Toledo Free Press on Jan. 26 that the current tax value for the 10-acre parcel that encompasses The Docks is nearly $5.6 million. This does not include the building value of a venue used for a rowing club. The current tax value of the buildings that make up The Docks is $4,321,100; the land value for the 10 acres is $1,278,100. McDowell said the taxes for some of the parcels are under a Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) credit, which is one of the reasons the property is detailed in a per-building scenario. Each CRA has a different expiration date. He also stated that the Board of Revisions (BOR) had recently made a decision on an appeal filed by the City of Toledo seeking to reduce the appraised tax value on the property. If the city accepts the BOR decision, the 2010 value for the 10-acre property, including The Docks buildings, would be approximately $3.5 million. first half and $17,599.04 for second half for property taxes on the 10acre property parcel. A payment of $26,779.98 was made Nov. 29 for the first half and a previous outstanding amount owed from 2009. The City of Toledo recently announced investors from China are interested in acquiring the property. Dashing Pacific Group Ltd., an Ohio LLC established by the real estate investors from China, has offered the city $2.15 million for The Docks. “When you talk about economic development and being able to turn Toledo around, you’ve got to have people who want to come to your city,” said Mayor Mike Bell during a press conference. “We’re very, very happy about this particular initiative here.” The mayor said the interest in the property is a direct result of relationships built during his administration’s trip to China. City Council members have been given information about the agreement and will have their first reading of the proposed sale Feb. 1. If City Council approves the sale, this will be Dashing Pacific’s first investment in the United States, said Scott Prephan, a representative for the group. Prephan said depending on how the sale acquisition goes, Dashing Pacific could also be interested in other investment opportunities in Toledo. O

STORMING BACK

Editor’s note: Toledo Free Press will follow the Blank family of Millbury for the next year as they rebuild their lives after a June 5 tornado destroyed their Main Street home. By Brandi Barhite Toledo Free Press Associate Editor bbarhite@toledofreepress.com

When the Blanks woke up the morning after the tornado, they thought, “What do we do now? Like the many victims of the June 5 tragedy, it was hard to think about rebuilding when they hadn’t even accepted the loss. “We had no flashlights, we had no water, we had no phones, we had nothing, Ed Blank said. “We lost everything. It was total devastation.

Ed spoke at the Jan. 24 Ready U session on “Volunteering in a Disaster. The session is part of a yearlong series sponsored by the Red Cross and the Lucas County BLANK Emergency Management Agency. Toledo Free Press is a media sponsor. One of the first groups of people the family saw the next morning was the Red Cross at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ. It became an informational center to tell them what to do next. “Looking back, we weren’t ready, Ed said. “We did not know what to do. We did not know who to call, who to talk to. We had no emergency

kits. We didn’t have anything downstairs in a safe place. If it wasn’t for all the people who were out there helping so quickly, we would have been lost. FAMILY: Tom Barnhizer, deputy director of the Lucas County Emergency Management Agency, said planning for disasters before they happen is the best way to help victims like the Blanks. That planning includes training volunteers before the tragedy strikes. That way, volunteers are ready to help and stay safe if they are at ground zero. “We try to plan for things that would happen on your worst possible day. We try to plan for the worst things. We don’t want to leave any stone unturned, Barnhizer said. Diane Dixon, director of volunteer management at the Red Cross, said the night of the tornado the volunteers were there within an hour. They were already trained and ready to go. “Mr. Blank said it right, when we get there, we are what happens next, Dixon said. “When they are looking to rebuild their lives, our volunteers are on the scene. Barnhizer said the United States is a nation of volunteers. People across the country step up after disasters and give of their time and talent to help other people who have become vic-

tims, possibly believing it could one day be them, he said. Ed said he never believed it would happen to his family. The day of the tornado started with a Lake Athletic Boosters golf outing and then a birthday party for son Casey. When their neighbors, the Walters, came home, the Blanks asked them to come over for a bonfire. They said, “No, we are really tired. We are going to bed. “While most of the people who survived the tornado were awake and had the opportunity to survive the tornado and seek shelter, they did not, Ed said. But Ed wasn’t worried about going into the basement until right before the tornado hit at 11:30 p.m. He remembers saying to his wife, “It is fine. This isn’t Kansas. We are not going to get hit by a tornado. Moments after Ed dove into the basement, their house was ripped away and the Blanks were thrown into chaos. “Unfortunately, we did witness our neighbors in their yard clinging to their last breath. All we could do was pray for them, Ed said. The next morning, the Blanks could not get to their property because of missing people. When they did return, there were no fewer than 500 people ready to help. “The next four months, I didn’t lift a hand, Ed said. “All I could do when I went back to my site was thank people who were helping us.

Ed said the volunteers were from Northwest Ohio, Southeast Michigan and Indiana. People wanted to give him money out of their pockets. “There is no better place to live. We wouldn’t want to be anywhere but here. That is why we built on the same site, Ed said. The Blanks moved into their rebuilt house Dec. 17. Two more neighbors are moving back in soon. The community is being rebuilt. “For any of you who ended up on our property or ended up helping, all my wife and I and my son can say is thank you, Ed said, holding back tears. O

RESTAURANTS

By Duane Ramsey

TOLEDO FREE PRESS SENIOR BUSINESS WRITER dramsey@toledofreepress.com

Tom Dumit returned to his hometown of Toledo bringing Donatos pizza, subs and salads with him. Dumit is president and managing partner of the Breaking Bread Pizza Company which owns and operates the Donatos franchise for Northwest Ohio. It’s not new for Dumit who has worked for Donatos since 1999, most recently as vice president of human resources. Dumit said he signed a 10-store deal with Donatos for Northwest Ohio and Delaware County in 2006. He currently operates the only Donatos restaurant in the area located on Conant Street in Maumee. “I couldn’t resist the opportunity to come back to Ohio and be part of what’s going on at Donatos,” he said about joining the company that was owned by McDonald’s at the time. The restaurant chain specializes in pizza, subs and salads with carryout, delivery and dine-in for about 40 people at the Maumee location. The unique thing about Donatos is the drive-through window for people to pick up their carry-out orders or to order on the go, said Dumit. Donatos is renowned for its signature, trademarked “Edge to Edge” pizzas loaded with the finest cheeses, meats, and freshest vegetables handsliced daily in every restaurant. “The quality of the pizza and overall value is phenomenal,” he said. “Donatos’ Edge to Edge large pizza is like an extra large at other pizza places.” Dumit said Donatos is known for its thin crust pizza, cinnamon twists and apple crisp, all based on its own dough made with special ingredients at its plant in the Columbus area. Donatos also features pizzeria and signature subs, salads and Stromboli. It offers daily specials such as all you can eat pizza, salad and breadsticks for $5.99 on Wednesday night from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from noon to 3 p.m. With his background in human resources, Dumit realizes that people are an important ingredient in the food

service business. He said he trains his own employees and managers, focusing on three things — being friendly to every customer, double-checking to make sure every order is right and getting the food to the customer on time with “promise time” delivery at Donatos. “If the customers are not happy, then we’re not happy. It’s important that we have the right people,” Dumit said. He is in the Toledo area regularly to make sure the Donatos in Maumee stays on track. He has an experienced general manager, Scott Wiesler, who has been in the restaurant business for many years. They have three full-time managers, 12 part-time employees and a full-time delivery driver during the day at the Maumee store. “We get customers from as far away

as Michigan to the north and Findlay to the south. People and lots of OSU students who tried the pizza in Columbus come here for more,” he said. Dumit said he plans to open a store in Findlay in June, another in Bowling Green, as many as five in Toledo and two near Columbus. Dumit was born and raised in Toledo, graduating from St. Johns Jesuit High School in 1972. He currently lives outside of Columbus but his and his wife’s families still live here. He got his start in the restaurant business working in McDonald’s as a teenager in Toledo. He later managed the Ponderosa restaurants on Central Avenue and Woodville Road and served as a district manager for the chain in Connecticut. He worked for Metro Media Restaurants for 20 years as director of human

resources and then as vice president of human resources for the company’s Bennigans restaurants in Texas. Dumit did not want to discuss his investment in Donatos but did confirm the accuracy of the franchise information on the company’s website. It takes a minimum net worth of $1.5 million with $300,000 in cash or equivalent and $750,000 in liquid assets to own a Donatos franchise that costs $25,000 per restaurant. Donatos was founded in 1963 when Jim Grote bought a small pizzeria on the south side of Columbus with the goal of creating a business that was unique. It has grown to almost 200 company and franchise-owned locations, including more than 50 in the Columbus area. Grote serves as CEO and his daughter, Jane Abell, as president and COO. O

Columbia Gas announces $18m infrastructure upgrade for 2011 By Kristen Criswell

Toledo Free Press Special Sections Editor krapin@toledofreepress.com

Columbia Gas of Ohio announced a 12 project, 32-mile natural gas infrastructure upgrade in Toledo for 2011. “By investing in our infrastructure, we are investing in our community,” said Chris Kozak, communications and community relations manager for the company during a press conference. The upgrade represents up to $18 million in investment for Toledo and is part of a 25year, $200 million investment KOZAK across Northwest Ohio, Kozak said. By the project’s completion, Columbia Gas will have invested $2 billion throughout the state and replaced roughly 400 miles of natural gas lines in Northwest Ohio, he said.

“We’re extremely happy that [Columbia Gas] is going to be able to help us with our infrastructure,” said Mayor Mike Bell. “Things get old and they start to wear out and what we have to do is be able replace it; that the Columbia Gas crew is prepared to come in and do that is a great thing.” Columbia Gas will replace the aging bare steel lines, with some dating pre-WWII, with plastic pipelines that are designed to better handle pressure and easier to replace, Kozak said. The new pipes have a 60-to-70-year lifespan and have a safety feature, called an excess BELL flow valve, that will shut off the gas flow in case of a severed line. “Our hope is to go into one of these neighborhoods, re-wire the entire system, bring the natural gas system up-to-date, make it state of the art,” Kozak said. “With our new

automated meter reading devices, we won’t have to come back to that neighborhood for 60 of 70 years unless there is a gas issue.” Columbia Gas has identified areas where there are high leak issues and will start replacing the pipes in those areas. The 12 different projects throughout the city are expected to affect roughly 5,000 customers, Kozak said. The old pipelines will be abandoned in place and Columbia Gas will utilize a technique called directional drilling underground to install the plastic lines. Kozak said removing the old steel lines would require an open cut and is more invasive. Columbia Gas has hired and contracted 12 different employees to install the new lines and it’s estimated for every dollar spent on the project there is a $1.60 economic impact in Northwest Ohio, Kozak said. Funding for the 25-year project came from Columbia Gas’ 2008 rate case, which increased the average bill by 2.5 percent to the company’s 1.4 million customers. O

eople have different ways of handling stress. Some run from it, some bury it and some find a way to deal with it. Depending on the individual’s position or social status, some are forced to face it head on, often turning to God or a higher power for help in the process. Such is the case with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and Findlay graduate Ben Roethlisberger, who in the most tumultuous season of his career said faith has meant everything. “It’s helped bring a lot of inner peace, and if people know about inner peace, they know how great it is,” Roethlisberger told Toledo Free Press Jan. 27 in the Steelers locker room. “None of this would be possible without Him. It’s an awesome thing.” From his motorcycle accident in 2006 to allegations of sexual assault that cost him the first four games of the 2010 season without pay after being suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, Roethlisberger’s off-the-field issues have been welldocumented. Though Roethlisberger’s character may be questioned long after his playing days are over, his talent and focus on the field will not. At age 23, Roethlisberger became the youngest starting quarterback in NFL history to win a Super Bowl when Pittsburgh defeated Seattle 21-10 at Ford Field in Detroit in 2006. In 2009, Roethlisberger’s touchdown pass to former Buckeye Santonio Holmes with 35 seconds left in Super Bowl XLIII lifted the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over Arizona, giving him his second championship ring in four years. Even after missing the first four games of 2010 and undergoing mandatory “comprehensive behavioral evaluation by professionals” per Goodell’s punishment, Roethlisberger has been spectacular. In just 12 games, he passed for 3,200 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions, then led Pittsburgh to playoff wins over the Ravens and Jets en route to his team’s third Super Bowl appearance in six seasons. n STEELERS CONTINUES ON A14

PITTSBURGH STEELERS QUARTERBACK BEN ROETHLISBERGER WAS BORN IN LIMA AND GREW UP IN FINDLAY. HE HAS WON TWO NFL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

A14 n Toledo Free Press n STEELERS CONTINUED FROM A13 “I think he’s just being himself,” said Pittsburgh left tackle Max Starks, whose locker has been next to Roethlisberger’s for his entire career. “I think for a long time he kind of felt sheltered and guarded off just because of all the attention people place on him, wanting to see the expectations instead of just letting him be himself. I think now he’s finally just said, ‘You know what? I’m just going to be myself.’ That’s what you want to see in your quarterback. “You want him to feel like he can be an individual and just relax. I think that he’s done that this year and it shows. He’s a pretty consistent type of person, and we were happy to have him back.” Since his high school days with the Findlay Trojans, it was obvious Roethlisberger had a gift to play the game. At 6 feet 5 inches tall and 241 pounds, his nimble feet and agility for a man of his size have made him one of the toughest quarterbacks in the NFL to defend. Roethlisberger is a big reason why the Steelers are headed to the franchise’s eighth Super Bowl, tying the Dallas Cowboys for the league record. “It’s great,” Roethlisberger said. “I love being a Steeler. I’ve always loved being here. I want to play my whole career here, so it’s an awesome thing. The fans are awesome. My team’s awesome. It’s really a blessing to be here.” Roethlisberger is also thankful to have been blessed with some great coaches. While playing at Miami (Ohio) under the tutelage of the late Terry Hoeppner, Roethlisberger finished his career with the RedHawks as the school’s all-time career leader in total offensive yards (11,075), passing yards (10,829), passing touchdowns (84), passes attempted (1,304) and passes completed (854). Under longtime Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, Roethlisberger became the first quarterback in NFL history to guide his team to the conference championship game in his first two seasons, the second of which ended with Pittsburgh’s Super Bowl XL victory. Roethlisberger and the Steelers have thrived under current head coach Mike Tomlin, who in his second year at Pittsburgh became the youngest head coach in league history to win a Super Bowl when he led the team to a championship in 2008. “Everyone obviously knows — they should know — how close Coach [Hoeppner] and I were,” Roethlisberger said. Hoeppner was 59 when he died of complications from a brain tumor June 19, 2007. “That’s one of the hardest things about doing this, is knowing that he’s not here with me to enjoy at least the process, but I know he’s got the best

sports seat in the house. It’s been an honor championships under his belt, joining to be able to play for a Hall of Fame the ranks of Tom Brady and Hall of coach like Cowher and I feel a future Famers Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana and Troy Aikman. Hall of Famer in Coach Tomlin.” Not bad for a kid from Northwest If the 28-year-old Roethlisberger can lead the Steelers to another Super Ohio. While Roethlisberger’s parents Bowl victory when his team takes on no longer live in the Northwest Ohio the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl area, he said he appreciates the support XLV on Feb. 6 in Cowboys Stadium, from local fans, adding that he changed hometown from 1Findlay in the he will Devers_MB_TFP_111 become just the fifth quarter2692 1/19/11his 5:13 PM Page back in NFL history with at least three player guide because he once attended

Only time will tell if the Northwest Ohio product has changed for the better, but it’s not for us to judge. If Roethlisberger truly is a man of faith and has found inner peace, he knows one day he will have to answer to a much higher judge. O

AUTO SHOW

By Duane Ramsey

TOLEDO FREE PRESS SENIOR BUSINESS WRITER dramsey@toledofreepress.com

The Greater Toledo Auto Show opened Jan. 26 at the SeaGate Convention Centre with the latest developments and new vehicles presented by the Toledo Automobile Dealers Association (TADA). The show continues through Jan. 30. “It’s a show for anyone who’s in the market for a car or just wants to check out the latest features and models. You have access to every single vehicle at the show, which is not always true at the larger shows,” said Nikki Bragg, auto show manager for TADA. Most of the major auto companies participate in the show, providing exhibits and some of the cars with others coming from local dealers. Most of the area dealers are involved in the show through the companies they represent, Bragg said. “It’s a great way for everyone to see all the new cars inside where it’s warm. It’s good for dealers and people who are thinking about buying or just looking at cars,” said John Yark, past president and board member of the dealers association. Toledo still has a lot of auto manufacturing in the area with GM’s Powertrain plant, Chrysler’s Jeep plant and numerous suppliers to the auto industry that support the auto show. It unites everyone working together to make it a successful event, Yark said. n SHOW CONTINUES ON A17

Those glistening icicles on the house might look beautiful, but it could be a bad sign about the state of a roof, local contractors say. “If they’ve got icicles coming off their roof, they’ve got a problem with ventilation and insulation, without a doubt. That’s what causes that,” said Tom Elder, owner of Seagate Roofing and Waterproofing in Toledo. Icicles are formed when heated air leaks into an unheated attic, creating warm areas on the roof. Melting snow flows down the roof until it reaches a cold spot, such as the eaves, where it refreezes, forming an ice dam. As the dam builds, water spills over and freezes into icicles. Water is also forced under shingles, causing damage to the roof. Take a look down your street, advised Rod Pierce, general and sales manager at ABC Seamless Siding in Toledo. If your roof has bare “hot spots” when others have thick layers of snow, that could signal a problem. “If there’s snow melting away, there’s heat coming from somewhere,” Pierce said. “It’s like frying bacon in a frying pan and it causes shingles to essentially bake.” Spring through fall is the best time of year for outdoor repair work, but winter is the perfect time to get estimates and make arrangements, the contractors said.

“Ideally now is a good time to start talking with contractors because they have more time, they’re not real busy, and you might be able to get better deals,” Elder said. “We’re not far away, we’re 30 days from being able to do anything outside, and they’re willing to give you a little better price if they know they’ll be able to start right away as soon as the weather allows.” Manufacturers also typically raise the price of roofing and siding materials around March or April each year, so customers can save by ordering before then, Elder said. “They usually give us 60 days notice and we’re starting to see them already,” Elder said. Although some companies work year-round, doing outside repair work, especially roofing, when it’s cold is not usually a good idea, as some manufacturers won’t guarantee their products under certain conditions, said Mike Fox, co-owner of Ohio Roofing and Siding in Toledo. “We really try not to applicate if it’s under 50 degrees. The tar strip that seals one shingle to the next needs to melt to seal the two shingles together and they cannot do that under 50 degrees,” Fox said. “What happens when you put them on under the temperature limits is you get a big wind in the spring and it blows them off. All those guys claiming they can do it now, you can’t.” Cost for a job depends on many factors. The best thing to do is call for a

free consultation and go from there, contractors said. Sometimes customers think they need a replacement when they really only need a repair. When deciding on a contractor, there are more factors to consider than just price, as manufacturers have stringent rules about what they will cover, Elder said. “Today you have to be extremely careful when you buy,” Elder said. “Many roofers will not pay attention to ventilation. If you get prices from two roofers and one guy talks about ventilation, the other guy is going to

So the guy who says ‘I’m just going to take the lowest price’ is probably going to end up without a warranty without even knowing it.” Aluminum and wood siding has mostly been replaced by vinyl, steel or cement fiber, with most customers choosing vinyl, the contractors said. Siding is mostly an appearance product, although it can add insulation to your home, Elder said. “There is some siding out there that has some pretty high insulation value if you are looking to tighten up your house, so to speak,” Elder said. The cost of siding and shingles has tripled during the past five years, and “it’s going to get worse” since the prices are linked to oil prices, Elder said. Although it can be pricey, siding is maintenance-free and regularly painting a house can add up to just as much or more over the years,

Pierce said. The windows in an average home start to show wear after 25 years, especially wooden windows, Fox said. “Some older homes don’t even have insulated glass, just a storm window with glass,” Fox said. “With today’s cost of heat, that’s definitely something you want to replace right away.” Overall, indicators show 2011 is going to be a better year for contractors, Pierce said. “Industry-wide, nationwide, since 2007 the home improvement industry has taken a hit,” Pierce said. “It depends on the company, but everybody took their hits. Now it’s nice to see it coming around.” For information, visit www.abcseamless.com www.ohioroofingandsiding.com www.seagateforyourhome.com www.owenscorning.com O

STYLE

Redecorate your home like a pro By Paige Aten

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer news@toledofreepress.com

Taking on the task of redecorating the rooms in a home can easily turn into a daunting project. Deciding where to start, how much to spend and how much to change can be tricky, bordering on overwhelming. With the help of an interior designer or even an interior design store or website, though, the task can quickly become a creative, enjoyable one. Pamela Straub, owner of Pamela Straub Interior Design in Toledo, said there are plenty of little things homeowners can do to spruce up their living space. “Change up pillows, lamps, lampshades or other accessories,” she said. Karen Koester of Koester Interiors in Toledo agreed that pillows are a quick, easy update for a living space. “Keep it simple and buy some fresh pillows and put the current ones away for a future revamp,” she said. She also said adding an area rug in the seating area can provide an easy pick-me-up for a room. There are easy and inexpensive ways to redecorate every room in the house. Consider the following tips for some of the more popular rooms.

Living room

Straub said one easy way to update a living room is to change up the color of the walls. “Tweak the paint color, even if it’s just one shade lighter or darker,” she said. She also said updating picture frames or adding new art to walls can make a big difference in how a room feels. Home & Garden Television

(HGTV) suggests on its website to reuse what homeowners already own, such as mirrors or dressers. The site also gives tips on creating a focal wall, which can help save money by focusing on a single area of a room. Straub said one of her favorite ways to update a living room is with plants and fresh flowers. “They perk up any room. I always have fresh flowers in my house,” she said.

Kitchen

The kitchen is another space where updating a paint color can make a world of difference. “I love a coat of fresh white paint in a kitchen,” said Straub. “It doesn’t have to be flat white either — think about maybe glossy instead.” Even though many components of kitchens are fairly permanent, such as cabinets and appliances, there are other ways to make the space feel new. HGTV recommends looking for granite countertops in salvage yards and using unconventional materials for backsplashes. Changing out the hardware on existing cabinets can also be a quick, inexpensive fix.

Bathroom

Straub has one special favorite for bathrooms and powder rooms: wallpaper. “Wallpaper can bring [a bathroom] to life and turn it into a jewel. It can be really fun and whimsical,” she said. Several do-it-yourself designers posted pictures of their bathroom remodels on HGTV’s website. One said to make sure to use existing artistic skills to create a one-of-a-kind design, such as hand-painting a mural.

The site also suggests using circular mirrors to imitate bubbles above a bathtub and adding molding to prefabricated cabinets to create an upscale but inexpensive look. Above all else, Straub said to remember the little things when redecorating any space in a home. “Accessories punctuate rooms,” she said. “They’re the special touches that make a room what it is.” Koester agreed, and listed several Toledo businesses she shops at for these touches. “I like C’est la Vie for great touches and ribbons, fresh flowers at Keith Brooks, Lily’s for great finds and of course Sheffield Road in Perrysburg,” she said. She said it’s also important to be on the lookout for good deals because there isn’t necessarily a perfect time to bargain shop. O

Carol Bintz has lived her dream for almost two decades. And in turn, the Toledo Museum of Art hasn’t dreamed of running without her since the early ’90s. Bintz took the chief operating officer position at the museum last fall for the second time during her career. The appointment follows former interim director and COO Rod Bigelow, who left for a job in Arkansas. She graduated from Tiffin University with an accounting degree and a computer science minor. Bintz started a family before tackling college. Had she not waited, she probably would have gone straight to school for art, she said. BINTZ Thus, working in the museum and managing money is the perfect match — and a chance to learn more every day, she said. “The Toledo Museum of Art was the museum that I went to as a child and as an adult,” Bintz said. “It was kind of a dream come true.” Bintz’ favorite works of art fluctuate depending on the day, from impressionist classics or contemporary glasswork. What hasn’t fluctuated is her dedication to the museum’s mission, she said. Before she worked at the museum, she spent time as the state examiner for the state auditor, was the accounting officer at a bank and then worked for a glass industry factory. The museum hired her as the controller in the ’90s, but she soon stepped up to the COO role. She was in that position for about 14 years but left in

2008 to be the development officer for business and planned giving. After accruing more donors and sponsors over the past couple years, she has taken the COO role again. As COO, she oversees finances, human resources, security, technology and other elements of museum operations. Managing the budget has gotten difficult lately; the economic downturn has weakened donation and investment-based income, she said. Keeping the museum free at all times has gotten tricky at times but is a must to keep in line with the museum’s objectives, Bintz said. “Our real goal is to be accessible to everyone and we would not want an admission charge to stand in the way of someone taking part of what we do,” she said. “We’ve thought about doing it but it defeats the heart of our mission.” Bintz has a slew of prized accomplishments during her work in the past as COO. She’s most proud of her involvement of the Glass Pavilion construction. As head of the project team, she worked with the design team and was responsible for the budget. Keeping financial concerns in mind also led her and museum officials to step up on utility efficiency. The building has reduced electrical use by at least 70 percent since 1992, Bintz said. More efficient lighting, better devices to produce heat and solar panels on the roof have helped cut costs, she said. The museum installed the first round of panels in 2003 and has more waiting to be installed as soon as weather permits, Bintz said. The goals Bintz has for her latest appointment include forming plans to keep the museum in step with the evolving virtual world. It’s too early to say what the plans are, however, the changes are exciting, Bintz said. O

‘Dancing with the Stars’ champ dips into music By Vicki L. Kroll

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer vkroll@toledofreepress.com

Mark Ballas can fox trot, waltz, rumba, samba, swing, jive, tango, salsa and cha cha. Now the two-time “Dancing with the Stars” champion is strapping on a guitar and stepping behind the microphone. The professional dancer is set to release his second disc, “HurtLoveBox,” Feb. 15. He wrote all the songs except the first single, “Life Happens,” which he co-wrote. “It’s kind of about your life just happens,” he said. “You can’t bend time, you can’t push time, you can’t pursue it; you have to wait for life to just happen, one step at a time, one

day as it comes, and there’s no point in looking too far ahead or living too far back in the past.” The 24-year-old was excited to talk about his music and explain the title of the new disc during a call from a tour stop in Pittsburgh. “I keep all my memories in boxes. I keep concert tickets, backstage passes, wine corks from special occasions — I keep all kinds of things that were special to me growing up, and I keep all those memories in boxes. My mom would constantly rag on me because she says I’m a pack rat,” he said. “I feel like a record is a collection of one’s memories, so half of this record is about going through some harder times, and the other half is about accomplishing great things and being

Pulmonary arterial hypertension, also called PAH, is increased pressure in the arteries that carry blood from your heart to your lungs. happy with where you’re at.” Describing his sound, Ballas said, “It’s singer-songwriter, kind of poprock stuff. If you’re a fan of John Mayer, Jason Mraz, James Marsden, Dave Matthews, it’s very singer-songwriter, but it’s still rock-pop.” He started to play guitar and take ballroom dance lessons at age 10. “My dad bought me my first guitar, but he wanted me to start learning flamenco and some classical stuff before I started getting into rock. And at the time, I was very upset about it — all I wanted to do was wail,” Ballas recalled. “But now I’m really grateful for it because it’s a big influence in my guitar style. I don’t play with a pick; I use a lot of finger picking, and I incorporate a lot of flamenco techniques in my playing.”

Ballas will play at Frankie’s Feb. 5. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 night of the show. Steel Vines will open. While he’s helped Olympic gold medalists Kristi Yamaguchi and Shawn Johnson win the mirror ball trophy on “Dancing with the Stars,” Ballas said he stays in contact with most of his partners. “I talk to Bristol [Palin] all the time; we text each other back and forth. Kristi Yamaguchi, I’ve become very close with her and her family. Shawn Johnson is a good friend of mine; I saw her not too long ago when I was in Des Moines, so we spent the day together. And I text back and forth sometimes with Melissa Joan Hart and Kim Kardashian.” O

New exhibit features three pieces by Rembrandt

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will display a recently rediscovered painting by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn starting Jan. 28. The painting was lost for several years, but resurfaced in 2007 when an

English family that owned the artwork sold it at an auction house. While the painting was originally attributed to a follower of Rembrandt and valued at $1,600 to $2,400, art dealers recognized its importance and

the piece sold for $4.5 million. The self-portrait, on loan to the museum, will be on display with TMA’s two pieces by the Dutch painter. The exhibit also features “Young Man with Plumed Hat” and “Man in a Fur-Lined Coat,”

pieces from the beginning and end of Rembrandt’s career. “You can’t have too much Rembrandt,” said Lawrence Nichols, TMA’s William Hutton curator, European and American painting and sculpture before 1900. “He’s always rewarding and his artwork is visually and utterly compelling. At 6 inches by 11 inches, [“Rembrandt Laughing”] is small, but it will be a thrill to see this creative genius at the outset of his career.” Nichols and TMA Director Brian Kennedy plan to give tours of the exhibit, but the museum is still finalizing programming to accompany the exhibit, Nichols said. Nichols is scheduled to give tours Feb. 11 and 12, he said. For information on programing accompanying the exhibit, visit the website www.toledomusuem.org. O — Kristen Criswell

A home for Sasha

Sasha is a 1-year-old black Chow Chow mix. She was transferred to the Toledo Area Humane Society from the dog warden so that we could help her find a new home. She was placed into a temporary foster home where she could be properly socialized and given the confidence she needed to bring her out of her shell. Under the care of a loving family, Sasha was able to blossom into a gentle and affectionate dog. Sasha has grown to love attention and she loves to give kisses to her favorite people. She enjoys playing with her toys and munching on a good chew bone. Sometimes she acts very silly when she plays, and it’s easy to see that she is still a puppy on the inside. Sasha likes the company of other dogs, as long as they don’t play too rough, and would be happy to have a canine companion in her new home. Sasha still acts a little timid when she is exposed to unfamiliar places. She will need an owner that is patient and willing to

use positive reinforcement to help encourage her to try new things. Sasha has been spayed, examined by a staff veterinarian, is current on her vaccinations, and is microchipped. Toledo Area Humane Society is located at 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Arrowhead Park, Maumee. Adoption hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
