on Stainbrook’s post at the Lucas County Board of Elections (BOE) is not an empire; it’s more like a sandbox with one petulant kid trying to commandeer everyone else’s toys. But things are clearly getting messy for the contentious political power-broker wannabe.

On March 4, after longtime urging by the Ohio Secretary of State’s office, Meghan Gallagher was replaced as director of the BOE. Stainbrook lobbied hard to keep his pal Gallagher, but the other three board members disagreed, naming board secretary Gina Kaczala as director by a 3-1 vote. Dan Thomas F. Pounds DeAngelis was retained as deputy director, with Stainbrook again the lone dissenting vote.

A Toledo Free Press photo tells the story. As Kaczala and DeAngelis are being sworn in, Stainbrook is seen leaving the meeting, by all accounts carrying his anger and frustration out of the ceremony as fast as his sneaker-clad feet could carry him.

“I have absolutely no confidence in Gina Kaczala being capable of running this election for the primary in May,” Stainbrook said. “Gina has no management skills, no professional ability and is incapable of telling the truth. The voters in Lucas County deserve better.”

That’s a fine, cooperative note for the county GOP chairman to strike with the new director, isn’t it? It is also one of the greatest examples of the pot calling the kettle black you are likely to see enacted in politics.

It is no secret that the root problem at the BOE is not just the people he has maneuvered into place, but Stainbrook himself. Watching some of his former allies assert actual independence in opposition to Stainbrook bodes well, but is just a start; as long as he remains at the BOE there will be, not healthy debate and discussion, but squabbling and confrontation.

Removing Gallagher, who will be less than a footnote in the history of Lucas County politics, is an encouraging step.

As we have since the beginning of this sad and sordid journey, we continue to urge Secretary of State Jon Husted’s office to closely monitor Stainbrook and facilitate his removal from this crucial yet currently untrustworthy entity. O Tom Pounds is president and publisher of Toledo Free Press.

Instead of becoming evidence of the “Obamacare Layer” as proof that

change, such results are more likely to prove its absence. They highlight the inability of today’s political climate to show real change, regardless of who’s in charge. This entire process is reinforced by a plurality of low-information voters who seldom look beyond name recognition in choosing candidates, regardless of party affiliation or prior performance.

Available data, as determined by the length of Congressional service, tends to support this. Rep. Marcy Kaptur’s interminable 31 years in office, for example, doesn’t even rank in the top 100 on the historical “Groundhog Day” list of service in the national legislature. Michigan Rep. John Dingell currently holds the title of Congress’ “never-ending gobstopper,” but plans to retire this year after an uninterrupted 59-year tenure. Rumor has it his legacy will likely be carried on with his younger wife (a lobbyist) attempting a move from understudy to title role, and cashing in on said name recognition in her run for the open seat.

The climate of politics is not something easily influenced by the rhetoric of its participants, the heat of the issues nor the apparent coolness of the electorate to its representatives. It is perhaps far too placid (if not flaccid) to have its tides easily stirred. Those of you thinking you see a sea change coming, with a permanent rise in the depth of the Republican Party (especially that of some of its conservative elements) — think again. Wild and unproven theories may continue to exist, but real political climate change can and should be utterly denied. O

On that program, people undergoing gastric bypass surgery are documented for one year. Each episode starts with a somber black screen that informs viewers that fewer than 5 percent of such patients successfully keep the weight off.

That’s a greater failure rate than for those attempting to quit smoking.

A number of the people on “My 600-lb. Life” start their journeys at 700 pounds or more. More than a few die during their year of documentation.

It is stunning to watch the depths of denial and gluttony in which some of these folks are drowning.

It is a somber show, in stark contrast to the goofy hedonism of Richman’s food orgies. For me, it’s not simply a cautionary tale, to keep me from going back to that lifestyle. It’s more of a relief that I was able to stop my catastrophic gain at 400 pounds, a number which haunts me for its irresponsibility and recklessness. I watch

Freak shows

At my one-year checkup in September, my doctor asked if I was considering the follow-up surgery for skin and remaining fat removal.

During my era of changing dietary habits, I was an avid viewer of “Man vs. Food,” the TV show starring Adam Richman in which he travels the country participating in eating challenges, such as chewing through a bucket of what looks like 3,000 chicken wings in 45 minutes or eating a chocolate fudge sundae with enough ice cream to fill Sofia Vergara’s halter top.

It was a vicarious thrill to watch somebody eat their way through eight feet of Philly cheesesteak when the most I could nosh at one sitting was a half of a grilled chicken breast. But as I morphed from losing to maintaining weight, I discovered another gastric freak show to watch: “My 600-lb Life.”

The choice

My doctor told me that although my body and skin had rebounded remarkably well from the weight loss, I undoubtedly qualified for the skin removal surgery and abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck.”

As I rapidly learned, referring to the procedure as an abdominoplasty elicited far more gravitas than calling it a tummy tuck.

And I discovered, no matter what I called the surgery, I was tucked either way.

Acoustics for Autism. The name has a certain ring to it, Dave Carpenter said to fellow musician Nicole Khoury one night at a Toledo bar.

“He was like, ‘Isn’t this a cool name for something?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, and that was it. I didn’t think about it again,” Khoury said. “Two months later, I was like, ‘Remember when you said that? This is what I want to do.’

“That is literally how it happened. I developed a charity, Project iAm, so we could have the event. I thought it was going to be one benefit, one time. I had no idea it was going to turn into a fullblown 501(c)3.”

The event drew about 500 people and raised $8,000 in its first year.

“All of a sudden there were so many people saying, ‘You’ve got to keep doing this. This is awesome.’ I said, ‘All right, fine!’ Little did I know,” she said, laughing.

Now in its seventh year, Project iAm’s charity concert has grown into one of the area’s largest and most anticipated music events of the year. National acts like Skid Row, Rusted Root and George Clinton have taken notice and support the charity. Project iAm has given more than $40,000 to area families for autism treatments.

“It’s like kicking a snowball off a mountain,” Carpenter said. “It just started to get bigger and bigger.”

This year’s event, set for noon to 2 a.m. March 9 in downtown Maumee, will feature more than 30 bands on three stages. The main stage will be at The Village Idiot, 309 Conant St., with a second stage and a tent stage down the street at Buster Brown’s. There is no admission cost, but there will be a “karma box” for donations as well as raffle tickets and a silent auction.

Auction items include Coach bags, Kate Spade purses, a stay in a Charleston, S.C., condo, a beach cruiser, a tailgate set, spa days, an asphalt sealing package, gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses and more. Keys to a Plexiglas “vault” filled with more items will also be sold.

The winning key will be the one that opens the vault.

There will be pizza from The Village Idiot, gourmet bratwurst from Aunt Carla’s Boosh and a bake sale.

At least 20 of the groups have been involved with the event since day one, Carpenter said.

“Every single musician who plays is a headliner,” he said. “From a concert perspective, you just get to sit

back and literally every 40 minutes see a new act. It would take you forever to travel around Toledo and see all these people. It’s an eclectic mix.”

Musician Kyle White is one of the local acts who performs each year.

“For me, it’s getting to see all the amazing musicians in Toledo that I never get to see because we’re all playing at the same time,” White said. “There’s just such crazy good energy. You can feel the positive energy when you walk in that room. Anyone who has ever been to this event always comes back.”

Before going into music full-time, White planned to work with children with autism as a school psychologist.

“I might still go into music therapy and one of the reasons I’d like to go into that is to work with kids with autism,” White said.

This year, for the first time, a benefit CD, “Acoustics for Autism,” will be available.

Musicians on the CD include Carpenter, White, Khoury’s band Arctic Clam, John Barile, Jeff Stewart, Bulletproof Snow, Anthony Beck, Poormercy, The Eight Fifteens, Chris Shut-

ters, Pat Lewandowski, Joe Woods, Wilson Lake and the Rock Bass and Empire Drift.

“We’ve been talking about doing this for years,” said Khoury, who approached Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller in December about helping her produce a CD. “It really came together pretty quickly.”

The CDs will debut at the Acoustics for Autism show and sell for $10. They will then be available online for $15.

Both Khoury and Carpenter have friends with autistic children so they knew a need was there.

“What people don’t understand is that this stuff isn’t covered by insurance,” Khoury said. “And there isn’t a single treatment. There are a gazillion different things you can try for your kid and it might work and it might not. The whole goal of the charity is to find something that makes you as a family and you as a parent feel comfortable that your child is progressing.

They may never speak, but there are still different strides they can make.

“A lot of these kids don’t want personal contact. You can’t hug them. I’ve

had hugs from some of these kids and you immediately just start crying,” Khoury said. “I’ve had applications that I’ve had to stop reading in the middle because it’s too emotional to deal with.”

Thomas “Sully” Sullivan of The Village Idiot is another of Khoury’s biggest supporters. He previously worked as a direct care provider for kids with autism.

“They do a lot of good with this event,” Sullivan said. “The bands are really interesting and a lot of kids benefit.”

Another big supporter is Skid Row. Khoury met the band in Toledo in 2000 after working security at one of their concerts. The group headlined a “Plugged-In” Project iAm fundraising concert in Toledo in 2009.

“Anyone that knows Nicole is aware that her dedication and tenacity is like no other,” Skid Row’s Rachel Bolan wrote in an email to Toledo Free Press. “When she first told me about Project iAm and Acoustics for Autism, I knew it would be successful.

“I knew immediately if Nicole was involved, it must be something special.

[That] along with the fact that one of my best friends has a son with autism made

the decision to participate very easy.

“We were honored when Nicole invited us to play. I believe that was a turning point for the foundation. She was bringing it to a new level. What was local became regional. And what was regional became national. Meeting some of the kids and their parents was inspiring. We would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Acoustics for Autism will always be held at The Village Idiot, Khoury said.

“You’ve got to be loyal to the people who have been loyal to you. This is where it needs to be. This is the CBGB of the Midwest,” she said.

It’s gratifying to see Acoustics for Autism succeed, Carpenter said. “[Khoury is] the hardest working person ever. This would not be in existence if it wasn’t for her. I have a lot of great ideas, but following through on them is not one of my strong points. She is phenomenal. She’s like the Energizer Bunny.”

“It’s really, really cool to see everybody get together for the right reasons,” Khoury said. “It’s the best event in town.”

Michigan teens Bulletproof Snow have ambitious dreams

A majority of great success stories come with equally fantastic tales of hard work, and Trey McLaughlin’s biography is no exception.

With help from his dedicated dad Brian McLaughlin, the 17-year-old started his self-described “modern rock” band two years ago and is already playing in impressive venues around the country.

Balancing his coursework, social life and family time, Trey has managed to grow the band’s recognition with three fellow rockers and create new music for the boys to perform at their various gigs.

Bulletproof Snow consists of four high school students from Michigan’s Livingston County. Trey, who is lead vocalist and plays guitar, is joined by Connor Cheney, 17, on drums, Jake Yacobelli, 17, on lead guitar and Matt Coon, 16, on bass. Cheney, Yacobelli and Coon also provide backing vocals.

Trey credits the group’s inspiration to big-name rock bands including Foo Fighters and the Goo Goo Dolls, along with ’80s metal crooners Skid Row.

This mashup of catchy genres is vividly reflected by Bulletproof Snow’s sound.

Its single “Punished for My Innocence” left a lasting mark on the organizers of benefit concert Acoustics for Autism and snagged a four-minute slot on the nonprofit’s new compilation album. Proceeds from sales go to Project iAm, a group that benefits families affected by autism in Northwest Ohio.

“It’s something nice that provides a lasting memory for people,” Brian said of the album.

Though the band members are elated to have a spot on the playlist, it wasn’t earned simply with catchy lyrics and an upbeat track. The teens are seasoned pros on the benefit stage. The group has performed at the Acoustics for Autism benefit held at The Village Idiot in Maumee for the past three years.

“It’s a great event to get behind,” Brian said. “Trey had a friend he hung out with a lot when he was younger who had a little brother with autism.

Trey actually spent a lot of time with him at their house and experienced firsthand what it’s like to deal with autism in the family.”

“It’s tough,” Trey said. “Just being able to support it, we’re extremely happy to.”

BULLETPROOF SNOW As for Cheney, Yacobelli and Coon’s futures, their goals are to pursue professional careers in the music industry after graduation.

“That’s Trey’s dream, so we’re giving it a shot,” Brian added.

Bulletproof Snow has a few events on the horizon, including a trip to Austin,

Texas, for SXSW musical festival later this month and, of course, the Acoustics for Autism event March 9. The group is slated to play at 2 p.m. in the outdoor tent.O

Woods donates song to charity Joe Woods had his mind “in the clouds” six months ago while writing “Zoom.”

“Just keeping on the right track, basically, and not letting other things influence you negatively,” he said.

Woods is happy to have the song featured for Project iAm. He has been involved with the charity, which organizes the Acoustics for Autism fundraiser, for five years.

He jumped at the opportunity to be involved again this year.

a chorus of Woods’ falsetto. Lyrics include “Will you consider being a friend to tell it like it is?/ It’s those short summer days and long winter nights/ I tell myself that you got your head in the clouds.”

Woods said he sees Acoustics for Autism as a chance for local talent to gather for a cause. He added that one aspect the area has to brag about is its art scene.

“The whole day is just a great day,” Woods said. “After this event usually ends, I think it kind of sparks people’s art. I think after this event, people realize how much art strives [in] this town.”

Woods has been playing music since he was a child, and comes from a family of musicians. He has been performing professionally for about four years.

The song is a current single for Woods and will appear on an upcoming album. He hopes it will be out in the next couple of months.

Poormercy revives decades-old song for CD

The end of “Ides,” a track by Poormercy featured on Project iAm’s Acoustics for Autism benefit CD, features a sample of actor Charlie Chaplin. “[He says] ‘I don’t want to be a judgmental person. I don’t want to be a dictator. I don’t want to be an emperor. There’s room for everyone.’

You don’t have to have any one big ego, if you will,” said Poormercy band member Shawn Daley.

The track was recorded in 2004 by Poormercy, which formed in 2003 but has been on hiatus since 2007. It was written for an EP the band promoted during a nationwide battle of the bands contest for Fuse.

“The winner won a recording contract and we got nothing,” Daley said.

“The song kind of was fitting. You always have to be better, faster, stronger [and] you have to meet all these criteria to be the best but you’re never going to be good enough and, sure enough, it was life imitating art.”

Daley said everyone faces being told that they’ll never be enough, but he says

“The mentality going into that session … [was] the mythological idea of pushing the boulder up a mountain; that was the starting point for that track,” Daley said.

Daley said it was an “incredible honor” to be included on the Acoustics for Autism benefit CD. He’s been familiar with the program and will be involved with the event later this year.

“I’m the DJ that warms the crowd up before the headliner,” Daley said.

“I’ll give every ounce of resource that I have [to this],” he said.

“If I can inspire someone else to do the same, then they can inspire someone to do the same and the next thing you know, it’s not just a hobby or a side project, it turns into a movement. It actually can change people’s lives.”

Today, Daley is working on unreleased music and hopes to debut an album “in the near future.” O

Captain Sweet Shoes’ Anthony Beck follows dream with solo project

Northwest Ohio native Anthony Beck is no stranger to the Toledo music scene, having started his first band when he was 15.

He is also a longtime supporter of Acoustics for Autism. This will be Beck’s fifth year performing at the benefit concert alongside Allen Spencer as acoustic cover duo Captain Sweet Shoes.

For the inaugural Acoustics for Autism album, Beck is contributing an original piece called “Iron Soul.”

“This is the first time I’ve done a solo work. I’ve been a part of five albums with three bands, but I have never done anything solo,” said Beck, whose acoustic style is influenced by artists such as Thom Yorke and Sigur Rós. “It’s a little scary. If you’re part of a band, it’s a group effort and the audience judges the band, but solo is different in that people are judging you directly.”

“Iron Soul” is about never giving up on one’s dreams and choosing the road less traveled, said Beck, who was inspired to write the song after watching a friend choose the “safe path” in her career and relationships at the expense

of her musical ambitions.

“I saw her walk away from her talents and the abilities she was blessed with to follow the safe path,” Beck said. “‘Iron Soul’ is about the dangers of that safe road. The hook in the song is: ‘Safe is an iron soul if you can stay on dry ground.’

It’s a warning that your soul can turn into a cold, hard, impenetrable thing, the weight of which can carry you under.”

The song, as well as the album he is working on, are his first efforts at song-writing in three years.

“I wrote ‘Iron Soul’ as a reminder to myself,” he said. “My band had just broken up. I got a 50-hour-a-week job in corporate America. That seemed like the safe thing to do. This song is a reminder not to give up on what I’m passionate about.”

This year he made a personal resolution to create a solo album.

“I’m no less passionate or serious than before, but now I don’t have to write for anyone’s ears but my own,” he said.

Beck has worked on every aspect of this solo work independently from his home, except for bass tracks played

by Dave Thatcher.

It means a great deal to Beck to have his first completed solo song on the inaugural Acoustics for Autism benefit CD.

Barile’s ‘Pitter Patter’ recalls adventure of raising daughter

John Barile’s career as a musician has been all about going with the flow and letting things fall into place.

Originally from Cleveland, Barile visited Toledo in 1991 and ended up staying longer than he anticipated.

“I came up here to visit some friends, and I ended up playing at Frankie’s one night, and was offered [a gig] every Wednesday,” he said.

For the Acoustics for Autism benefit CD, Barile wrote a song, “Pitter Patter,” about his daughter.

“For the first three and a half years of her life, I would lay on the couch and always hear her little feet running up and down the hallways, and

it would make this little ‘pitter patter’ sound on the wood floors. It’s about the things we’ve done so far, and the things we’re going to do.”

Barile was introduced to the world of music by his father; he began playing drums at age 5. One day he just decided to stop playing drums and picked up the guitar.

The change has worked well for him. Barile is a Toledo regular along with his frequent musical collaborator, longtime Toledo musician Bobby May. “Me and Bobby just take all the covers we know and make them our own,” Barile said. “Everything we do, we make our own.”

Barile added that he enjoys the wide range of songs he is able to play with someone as experienced as May. “It’s a joy and an honor to play with him. He’s forgotten more songs than I’ll ever know in my lifetime.”

Barile was first asked to join

Acoustics for Autism by his friend and its founder, Nicole Khoury.

“Nicole and I did an acoustic duo for a while,” Barile said. “And me and Bobby have been doing [Acoustics for Autism] ever since it started.”

Barile said he and May usually take most of the winter off and play more frequently during the warmer months.

Despite the busy schedule, Barile is happy to be a musician in the Glass City, and is content with his place in the musical universe.

“I’m not worried about 30,000 people and millions of dollars,” he said. “I like doing what I’m doing now.

I like walking into a bar, and being able to make one person’s night.

“People around here that come and listen to music are fantastic. They support it 100 percent in this city.”

Wilson Lake and the Rock Bass began when singer-songwriter Tom Jackson wrote music for his family to sing at their cottage.

Jackson became interested in sharing the kid-friendly lyrics of his folksy tunes outside his close circle.

He recruited his father-in-law Don Staczek and his friend Sandy Skala.

“It’s rock ’n’ roll with a ’50s vibe,” said Jackson of his group’s sound.

Once the band had created enough songs about hiking, camping and other outdoor activities, they released their self-titled debut CD. Since adding two more members — Brian Strong on keyboard and vocals and Mike Harshman on

bass and vocals — they’ve followed up with their second LP, “Ultrasonic Adventurephonic.”

The band is interested in spreading autism awareness with nonprofits like Project iAm due, in part, to the rising percentage of children diagnosed. As a high school English teacher, Jackson see firsthand how autism affects daily lives.

“I have children of my own who are not autistic, but knowing the rising number is out there, I want to make people more aware,” Jackson said.

“It’s a great cause and everyone associated has done a great job. I’m just happy to be part of it.”

Empire Drift’s Acoustics for Autism benefit CD contribution is “Piece of Heart,” a song recorded in 2009 — the same year the band’s “A Good Place To Call Home” won the inaugural Song of Toledo contest.

“It seemed like a good fit for Acoustics for Autism,” said percussionist and vocalist Allen Spencer.

Started in 2007, Empire Drift is a hard-to-classify band with music ranging from piano/acoustic to aggressive alternative songs. The band’s name comes from band members’ tendency to “drift” from genre to genre.

They claim to be the only band in the world to perform a “power hour” (60 songs in 60 minutes) and they gave away more than 17,000 copies of their debut album “Reality is Genius.”

Empire Drift also won the 2008 Regional Superstar Competition, which earned them a recording contract for their second album.

Although the band is currently inactive due to its members living in various parts of the country, they’ll be headlining the March 15 St. Patrick’s Day Party at The Blarney Irish Pub and playing at the Roundhouse Bar on Put-in-Bay this summer.

“We have another album coming out this year with new material we’ve been working on,” said Spencer, who has been involved with Acoustics for Autism

EMPIRE DRIFT every year since it started, performing in various bands and acoustic sets.

“Over the past 10 to 12 years, I’ve had a handful of friends who’ve worked full time at Bittersweet Farms, which houses and takes care of people with

autism and similar disabilities,” Spencer said. “I’m happy to be part of the event and plan to continue taking part in it.”

Local family turns random act of kindness into fundraising effort

When 8-year-old Myles Eckert found a $20 bill in a Maumee restaurant parking lot last month, he had no idea that simple act would lead to national attention.

The Waterville boy’s first thought was to use the money toward a video game. But when he spotted a man in uniform eating lunch, he decided to give it to him instead, along with a note.

“Dear Soldier,” the note read. “My dad was a soldier. He’s in heaven now.

I found this 20 dollars in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It’s your lucky day! Thank you for your service.

The recipient was Lt. Col. Frank Dailey, a 27-year military veteran

serving with the 180th Fighter Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard.

Dailey, a Bowsher High School graduate who now lives in Perrysburg, was out to lunch on Feb. 7 with his wife, Lisa, and their 8-month-old grandson.

“My back was to the Eckert family as my wife and I sat at the table,” Dailey said.

ECKERT “Myles made a couple attempts to hand me his note, but he didn’t get very far and I think he got shy. My wife said, ‘Hey, I think this young kid wants to give you something, but he seems to be shy about it.’ Shortly after that, Tiffany, his mother, handed me the note and said, ‘Myles would like to give this to you.’

“They went back to their table and

I opened the note and found a $20 bill in there. I thought, ‘Wow,’ and then proceeded to read it and it was just heart-melting immediately.

“Reading the note, he expresses that his father was a soldier and he’s in heaven now,” Dailey said. “But you can’t really discern what that’s about until the very bottom when you find his name and he states he’s a gold star kid. That immediately clued me in on how his father had died.”

Myles’ father, 24-year-old Army Sgt. Gary “Andy” Eckert Jr., was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on May 8, 2005, during his second tour of duty.

Myles was just 4 weeks old and his sister Marlee was 20 months old.

The Daileys took a photo of the note and shared it with their daughter, who posted it on Facebook.

“We just thought, ‘Boy, this is just a neat story,’” Dailey said. “What a thrill this whole thing was. We

to give back to an organization that means so much to us. Seeing people give to Snowball would mean so much more to all of us than any video game ever could. Myles isn’t the only little guy out there that’s hugging a headstone. This will benefit some of the others. Thank you!!”

In a recent Toledo Free Press column, Eckert wrote about how much she misses her late husband.

“He was a father, a husband, a son, a brother and a friend,” she wrote. “He was an athlete. He was a comedian. He was kind. He was handsome. He was so many things.

No matter how much time passes, he’s going to be missed. He’s missed every Christmas. He will be missed at our daughter’s wedding, when our son graduates college, when our grandchildren are born.

“I didn’t think that our ‘normal’ would include my kids asking to make trips to the cemetery to show their dad their sports uniforms or talk to a headstone about a really big day that had just transpired. The reality of our situation is that when we want to share the moments in life that others take for granted, we have to do so in front of a large slab of granite.”

Since the exchange, Dailey has become friends with Myles and the Eckert family. They email almost daily and recently met for dinner.

Dailey said he’s glad to see that the Eckerts are continuing to pay it forward.

“They are just a wonderful family,” Dailey said. “That’s really nice that for the rest of the story that happens to be continuing.”

shared it with our daughter, who placed it on Facebook and from there it just went gangbusters.”

Dailey and the Eckert family have since been interviewed by Steve Hartman of CBS and the story has been shared on social media more than half a million times.

“Our intent was to share it with friends and family that we had a pretty nice day and here’s why and that was that,” Dailey said. “So holy cow, I’m blown over.”

Dailey said he keeps the note on his dresser, where he looks at it regularly.

He said he took the $20 and paid it forward to someone else, but declined to share who or how.

“I think I’m going to leave that one discreet,” Dailey said. “I did it anonymously.”

Tiffany Eckert had no idea her son’s random act of kindness would generate so much attention. But when it did, the family was inundated with inquiries on how to send Myles money or video games.

Instead, they decided to redirect the requests to a fundraising website called Crowdtilt. The Eckert family set up an account so donations will go to a charity called Snowball Express.

Founded in 2006, Snowball Express provides “hope and new happy memories to the children of military fallen heroes who have died while on active duty since 9/11.”

The group offers the children a fourday experience filled with fun activities, like sporting events, dances, amusement parks and more, according to its website.

Myles and Marlee have both participated in Snowball Express events.

“What Snowball does for Marlee, Myles, & their gold star friends is life changing,” Eckert posted on the site.

The Lucas County Board of Elections (BOE) called a meeting to order March 4. Twelve minutes and two quick but contentious votes later, the board had a new director while retaining its deputy director.

Republican Jon Stainbrook lobbied hard to keep Meghan Gallagher as director, but the other three board members decided a change was needed, elevating board secretary Gina Kaczala to director by a 3-1 vote. Both Gallagher and Kaczala are Republicans.

Democrat Dan DeAngelis was retained as deputy director, with Stainbrook again the lone dissenting vote.

In a third vote, board member Ron Rothenbuhler, a Democrat, was unanimously retained as board chair.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Kaczala and DeAngelis called themselves a “united team” and promised “a fresh start” for a board that has been plagued for years by divisiveness and dysfunction.

“I’m going to bring consistency to this office,” Kaczala said. “We have in the last few years dealt with a division.

We are dealing with the problem of the public not being informed the way they should be.”

DeAngelis said he’s confident Kaczala can improve the BOE’s

workplace morale.

“Having a different director can make a whole heck of a lot of change in terms of personnel, how the office functions, how the personnel is treated,” he said.

Both deflected questions about the board’s prior troubles.

“There were personnel issues, obviously. There was a lot of dysfunction in this office and that’s really all I’ll say. We’re going to move forward and hopefully make it better,” DeAngelis said. “To echo Gina, I’m ready to have a new start tomorrow. It’s a new beginning at the Board of Elections.

We’re just going to move forward, hopefully to have fair, accurate and efficient elections for the voters. That’s what we’re here for.”

Both said they are confident the BOE will be ready for the primary elections in May. “Absolutely,” Kaczala said. “It’s teamwork. That’s all it is. ... We are going to work hard and we are going to do our best. And I think the voters are going to see that.”

Board member John Irish, a Democrat, served as acting chairman during the nomination and voting process.

After Gallagher and Kaczala were nominated for director, Irish started to call for a vote, but was interrupted by Stainbrook, who called for a discussion.

In August 2012, citing a dysfunctional board culture, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted placed the Lucas County BOE under the oversight of special masters and appointed two consultants tasked with evaluating the board.

Among the recommendations were that Gallagher and DeAngelis be fired.

Irish said he hopes the change will help in the long run, but predicted things may remain tense for now.

“I think it was one important step for us to take,” Irish said. “I certainly hope it improves things. I think in the short run, things will probably be a little tough. I think [Stainbrook’s] a little angry at this time, but hopefully over time we get back to what we’re supposed to be doing and running elections.” O

Infinite potential — that’s what Pat Metheny feels when he’s holding a guitar.

“If you say the word ‘guitar’ to 50 people, they will get 50 different images in their minds,” the jazz guitarist wrote in an email interview with Toledo Free Press. “To me, it is attractive because it is so undefined.”

Since his 1976 debut, “Bright Size Life,” the artist has reinvented the instrument. His sonic creativity and sizzling string work have won both fans and countless honors.

In 2013, readers of Downbeat magazine voted to induct Metheny into its Hall of Fame. He is the youngest member and only the fourth guitarist, joining Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian.

“Guitars, for me, are like screwdrivers are for a handyman. They are tools, and I have different ones for different uses,” Metheny wrote from a tour stop in San Francisco.

For his latest project, the composer assembled an amazing lineup: saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Ben Williams and drummer Antonio Sanchez.

Metheny won his 20th Grammy Award last year for “Unity Band,” an in-

strumental jazz quartet album.

“This is such a special group of musicians. From the first notes we played together in early 2012, through the recording and then all the touring that we did to follow, there was an instant connection that seemed to go beyond the usual kind of thing,” he wrote.

“We had such a great time together and the consistency of the playing was at a super high level, and we seemed to always get to something night after night.”

Known as the Pat Metheny Unity Group, the four decided to make another disc.

“We all wanted to keep it going, and my sense of it was that we had only scratched the surface of what it might be.

My instinct was to push it to be something else, but that something else could have the benefits of all the playing we had already done together as a place to build from and expand outward from,” Metheny wrote.

Joining the fun was multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi.

“To do what I wanted to do, I knew I likely had to expand the palette by adding another musician. However, I didn’t want to alter the incredible dynamic of the core quartet. What I really needed was a good musician who could play a lot of parts,” Metheny wrote.

On March 9, Toledo SOUP will host its fourth event in which local organizations give short presentations in the hopes of winning a communityfunded microgrant.

Money collected at the door, along with donations, will determine the grant amount. The $5 entry fee allows audience members to vote on a winner as they enjoy a complimentary bowl of soup.

Presentation topics include artistpainted fixtures to beautify the East Side’s Main Street, funding for broadcast’s focusing on the Toledo community, establishment of an urban goat farm, production of high-quality organic mushrooms and workshops for children who have siblings with special needs.

“I think some of these will really speak to a lot of people and bring a diverse group to the event,” said Emily Rippe, a Toledo SOUP committee member. “We want people to experience the event, really feel the community vibes and listen to each presenter

with an open mind. Vote for the one you truly think will make the biggest difference here in Toledo.”

Thirty-three organizations submitted proposals and the finalists were selected by a team of judges.

“We tried to get a diverse group of judges who are high-profile and do a lot in the Toledo community already,” Rippe said. “It was so difficult to choose that even though only five get to present, we had some honorable mentions. These organizations won’t be eligible for the grant, but will be able to present for three to five minutes to get their project out there.”

Audrey Johnson, who previously received the Toledo SOUP grant for her organization Art Around Town, was asked to participate as a judge for the second time.

“We look for what best fits the community as a whole,” Johnson said. “It’s exciting to see who’s out there, what they’re doing. Being a recipient was a beautiful thing. Toledo SOUP’s process is very much my process, giving back to the community, empowering the community, being that voice.”

Genevieve Abalos is the most recent Toledo SOUP winner. Her organization, The Art of Hope, was founded to help women who are coming out of sex trafficking transition into a healthy lifestyle through a one-year program, including mentoring and job skill training.

“It was amazing,” Abalos said. “The people at SOUP were all really helpful.

They gave us a list of other places to get help from as well.”

In addition to the main event, there will also be a bake sale and raffle during the presentations, and proceeds will supplement the grant. There will also be an after-party at The Attic on Adams, where

change and putting good energy out there for people with great ideas to gravitate toward,” Johnson said. “That’s what makes a good community. It’s nonpolitical, it’s nonjudgmental. It’s all about supporting people.”

Story within a story

The concept is fascinating. A book where two stories (at least) are going on simultaneously —­­­one in the main body of the text, and another in the margins, where two readers are jotting notes to one another about the tome, its mysterious author and each other. The result is a reading experience unlike any other.

That’s the DORST concept of “S,” a novel released in October from Mullholland Books and Bad Robot Productions. It was the idea of Bad Robot owner, Hollywood wunderkind and “Star Wars” reboot director J.J. Abrams. But most of the heavy lifting in the construction of the book was done by novelist Doug Dorst.

“It’s the one thing I’ve sort of done my whole life; I’ve certainly enjoyed it my whole life,” Dorst said of writing in an interview with Toledo Free Press. “And I kind of thought, at some point, if there was a way to make a living doing this thing that I like, I really ought to try.”

Dorst brings a distinctive pedigree to his work, having tried to be a musician before deciding writing was his true calling. He also teaches creative writing full time at Texas State University in San Marcos.

In his formative days, Dorst found himself drawn to writing that rejected the ideas of traditional narrative, which made him uniquely qualified when

Lindsey Weber of Bad Robot called with the idea that would grow into “S.” “J.J. had shared his idea for a book project, and may have asked her for suggestions for who to go to. And I think she had read ‘Alive in Necropolis,’ and passed it along to him and suggested I might be someone interesting to talk to,” Dorst said, referring to his first (and only) novel prior to “S.” “I got a call from my agent — and I mean, it was out of nowhere — asking, ‘Would you be interested in putting together a proposal, at least, for a project with J.J. Abrams?’ And that is not the sort of call one gets every day.”

Abrams’ kernel of an idea developed into an expansive and imaginatively assembled text where pages are filled with notes and comments and additional pieces like newspaper clippings and maps drawn on napkins are stuffed inside as well.

The tight structure might lead readers to believe it had been meticulously outlined and planned in advance — which Dorst insists is not the case.

“J.J. and I and Lindsey Weber — who is the head of features over at Bad Robot who worked with us a lot on this — we did a lot of talk on foundation work for the characters and a sense of what the structure of ‘Ship of Theseus’ might be like. But a lot of it, — yeah, a lot of it I was making up as I went along. And yes, that made for ... many messes that had to be cleaned up later.”

So how did something so intricately constructed result from such a relatively freewheeling creative process?

“I’m an obsessive reviser, for one thing, but we also had a lot of people who really devoted themselves to

Marvin is a goofy, playful 6-month-old male pit bull puppy. The Toledo Area Humane Society (TAHS) accepted him from the Lucas County Canine Care and Control because he needed medical care TAHS provides.

Marvin lives for playtime and likes to vocalize when he is having a good time. Since he is still a puppy, his new owner will need to continue working on his training and help him develop the manners you want to see in your home. Marvin enjoys going for walks, playing with other dogs and toys, toys, toys. Marvin has spent the last few weeks in a foster home while he was being treated for a skin condition. His foster family loved him to pieces and they are confident he will make someone a great pet. If you are looking for a guy that can liven up your life, Marvin is the puppy for you.

Marvin has been neutered, examined by a TAHS staff veterinarian, is current on his vaccinations, and is microchipped.

Mandarin is a 5-year-old male orange shorthair. His owners had to bring him to the TAHS because an ill-

ness in the family left them unable to care for a cat.

Mandarin is an affectionate kitty who likes attention and petting. He is not a big fan of being picked up or carried around, but if you sitting in a chair he may sneak over and take a nap on your lap. Mandarin is a visual kitty who enjoys watching his surroundings. His morning routine includes climbing to the top of the cat tower and watching the birds have breakfast at the bird feeder. Mandarin doesn’t mind a little alone time when you’re busy. He’ll just find a quiet out-of-the-way place and take a nap. If you’re interested in a quiet companion, Mandarin may be a great match for you. Mandarin has been neutered, examined by a TAHS staff veterinarian, is current on his vaccinations and is microchipped.
