am helping to raise a toddler, so I am adept at breaking down stories to their basic elements. In that spirit, here is a complicated political failure translated into a simple tale of stick-figure politics. Once upon a time, a good man wanted to be mayor. The man said he was not a politician and would not play petty politics. The man promised he would emphasize local development and help local businesses. One day, some local businessmen said they had an idea to make the airport a happier place. Thomas F. Pounds They hoped the mayor would listen to their plan. But the bad guys in the city said the plan to make the airport a happier place was a bad plan, even though they had not seen it. They said the mayor should not listen to the plan. So the mayor did not listen. One of the men on the city’s Council said he would listen to the airport plan. But the new mayor said, “No, you will not.” So the councilman did not. The businessmen were laughed at by the bad guys. The new mayor was revealed to be just another politician who would play petty politics. He broke his promise to emphasize local development and help local businesses, at least in this story. And while it remains to be seen if anyone in this story will live happily ever after, when it comes to the business community’s hope that the new mayor would be a wise and independent ruler, it is ... The end. O

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

THE ARMS FORCES

A

First steps

t an October 2011 meeting at a local library, I heard these words: “Seriously, Pam? You want to have an event to honor veterans who have traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS) and call it ‘Dancing With The Military Stars?’” Yes! Yes I did! Dancing and veterans — at first no one thought that was a great idea except me. The Arms Forces’ mission and my personal goal is to educate civilians on the military and to help them unPam derstand the invisible wounds service members can have as the result of their military service. That is a lofty goal and not one that’s going to be achieved by asking you to come to a conference to see a bunch of PowerPoint slides. I wanted to create a way that you, the entire community, could get to know the truth about our veterans — our heroes who now live with TBI and PTS — while also celebrating their lives and their service to our country. Dancing with the Military Stars (DWTMS) was born and our first event took place in May 2012. DWTMS is a celebration of life. Dancing, throughout history and most cultures, represents joyous, celebratory times! You don’t have to dance (unless you want to) because we have professional dancers who have been teaching celebrities from our community how to dance for months. In full costume, they will be dancing to some good ol’ country music this year! We have celebrity judges and our honorary chairperson is Dan Rogers from the Cherry Street Mission. This commitment from the pros and busy leaders, including a TV anchor, business owners, a professor and even an international beauty queen is commendable. Why do they do it? They understand what our veterans have done for them. They get it and that is why they have given their support to the mission of The Arms Forces and this event. Also, community businesses, the media, faith-based organizations and a loyal group of volunteers make the event possible. They all come together with our organization and use their time, talents and resources to assist with all the details that go into an event of this magnitude.

April 13, 2014

A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com

I often say that it takes a community to lift up a veteran and DWTMS proves this to be true. I recall people coming up to me after the first two events in 2012 and 2013, saying they were touched in ways they had never anticipated when they made their reservations. Some told me they had never talked with a veteran before that night and it was great to meet them socially and interact with them. Some cried and said their eyes were now opened and they would never again take HAYS for granted anyone who had served in the military. The veteran honorees from past years who were leery about agreeing to be honored so publicly, told me the experience was very helpful to them in moving on with their now civilian lives. They were somewhat shocked to find so many who didn’t even know them before the event cared. Seeing veterans, active duty military and civilians come together for what was once thought of as a silly idea (naysayers never deter me) has become a must-attend event with over 460 people on the scene last year. Yes, it is a fundraiser and has live and silent auctions but the food is always amazing and this year is a Country Meets City Buffet, supported by local restaurants and a caterer. The dance performances are entertaining and the live band and soloists are fantastic. But it is our veteran honorees and their families who are the stars of the show. Though the event is fun and entertaining, we have a serious message to relay to the community. Our veterans need support from organizations that understand their challenges and are willing to do what it takes to make sure their lives get on track and stay there. Our organization, The Arms Forces, needs your support so we can be there for our veterans. I hope you will consider attending May 10 and experience Dancing With The Military Stars. Observing Volunteer Week

To The Editor:

T

he American Red Cross Northwest Ohio Region and Western Lake Erie Region are celebrating its volunteers and the work they do in the community during National Volunteer Week, April 6-12. Last year, our volunteers provided food, shelter, comfort and hope to 601 local families who faced home fires and other disaster situations. They trained 12,101 people in lifesaving skills and assisted 442 military members, veterans and their families. They also helped collect 66,570 units of blood from donors in the 11 counties of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan that the Western Lake Erie Region covers.

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of what we do. We are able to provide services to thousands in our community through their compassionate care and support of our highly trained and dedicated volunteers — people just like you. We want to invite the public to sign up to volunteer and be a part of our lifesaving work. We’re looking for diverse volunteers of all ages and skill levels. Visit redcross.org/north westohio to learn more about volunteering with us and how to submit a volunteer application. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, please visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. If you want to volunteer to help when a disaster strikes your community, download the Team Red Cross app. You’ll receive notifications when

n MILLER CONTINUED FROM 3 Carolinea Heintz, one of the Mobile Meals founders, has written, “The official purpose of our service was: The provision of palatable meals that supply essential nutrients to a person who is unable to prepare or obtain adequate meals during a period of need or to someone who is unable to fully understand and prepare a modified diet. This service is for all who would benefit from it regardless of income, with emphasis on the aged.” Our route took us along Central Avenue down Holland-Sylvania Road and over to McCord Road, with a number of our deliveries concentrated in one apartment complex. We delivered to people who wanted their food left inside a garage with no contact, to people who politely accepted their meals and went back to their day,

Red Cross volunteers are needed in the area. The app can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store by searching for American Red Cross or by going to redcross.org/ mobileapps. We want to extend our sincerest thanks to the 1,162 local Red Cross volunteers who help us fulfill our mission 365 days a year, 24 hours a day in Northwest Ohio. O Diane S. and to people who wanted to chat and visit over the background television drone. It became clear within our first few stops how crucial the service is; without these delivered meals, some of the folks on our route would not be able to live on their own. These are folks who can take care of themselves but aren’t hopping in the car to drive to Walt Churchill’s Market. Knowing their food is coming every day must offer great peace of mind, and knowing those meals are smart and healthy must offer similar confidence for families and caregivers. Mobile Meals is seeking volunteers for its routes, which can take as little as one or two lunch hours per month. Learn more at mobilemeals.org or call (419) 255-7806. O

It matters

By Sarah Ottney

TOLEDO FREE PRESS MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

Matt Yarder’s family has been making sheet metal in Toledo for four generations. Doug Mallette moved to Toledo for college and decided to stay in Northwest Ohio. Jemma Hostetler has lived in big cities coast to coast but found a home in the Glass City. David Woodward lived in Atlanta for years before returning to his hometown to start a business. No matter what your story, a local group working to brand and market the Toledo region wants you to connect with the region and make it your own. The Toledo Region Branding Initiative is a nearly five-year, $800,000 project of the Northwest Ohio Brand Council — representatives from various public and private organizations that came together in 2009 with a common goal to promote the region, said Toledo Region Brand Manager Jeff Schaaf. On April 4, the group unveiled a new tagline, “It Matters Where You Make It,” along with a new logo, the word “TOLEDO” with a small green arrow pointing forward.

For the past few years, the group has focused on promoting the area as “the heart of the new manufacturing economy,” citing factors like geographic location, access to transportation channels and availability of a skilled workforce. Six months ago, the group hired Toledo-based North Design to rethink the branding and expand the focus to showcase the region’s quality of life as well. Enter “It Matters Where You Make It.” “We did not really have a slogan before and we wanted to put together something people could really adopt and use and make their own,” Schaaf said. “It has a double meaning. That’s intentional. ‘Make it’ could mean you physically make or assemble something in the Toledo region because of the abundant economic assets and/or you could make a life or accomplish goals here because of the inviting culture and lifestyle.” Woodward, president and creative director of North Design, said he felt “the heart of the new manufacturing economy” was relevant, but too specific. n BRANDING CONTINUES ON 7

n BRANDING CONTINUED FROM 6 It ignored lifestyle elements, like culture, art and affordability, Schaaf said. “Everybody was saying, ‘This is really great but you’re leaving out a huge element of what makes Toledo so great,’” said Schaaf, a Toledo native. “We realized that after you go home at the end of the day, you don’t focus

solely on economic assets; you focus on the things that make your life more meaningful.”

New logo

Community

A Toledo tradition since 2005

The group dropped its former “TR” logo in favor of the word “TOLEDO.” “TR was great, but if you didn’t have the actual words with it, people weren’t sure what it was,” Schaaf said. “The new logo is very simple, but it

says exactly who we are: Toledo, plain and simple. “Some people were suggesting it might be too simple, but one of the most iconic brands in the world that’s located right here in our backyard is Jeep. Their logo couldn’t be more simple, but when you see that name you know exactly what they’re talking about and that’s what we want.”

7

The green arrow signifies forward progress, he said. “That’s something our community has always been about. When settlers came here in 1795, they were looking to move forward, to make their lives and make them better,” Schaaf said. “The green is energetic, it’s fresh, it’s youthful, it’s very popular right now.”

Region

It’s time.

Despite the prominence of the Toledo name in the new logo, Toledo Region is still very much regionally focused. “We focus on the word because it’s the largest city within the region and most people, if you’re out of town and someone asks you where you’re from, more often than not you say you’re from Toledo,” Schaaf said. “The way we balance that is if you look at our images and you look at the messaging we convey, the companies we’re promoting and the as-

sets we’re promoting, we’re not solely in Toledo city limits.” It was North’s recommendation to simplify the brand and focus on Toledo. “We think if there is a lack of perception or negative perception of the region, it revolves around the city of Toledo. n BRANDING CONTINUES ON 8

n BRANDING CONTINUED FROM 7 “So if we don’t fix the perception of Toledo and what it represents then we’ll never be able to build a brand called the Toledo Region,” Woodward said. “Whether you live in Sylvania or Perrysburg or Sandusky, we’re all impacted in some way by the perception of Toledo being the largest city in the region. “We’re not throwing away the regional piece and we want to talk about the surrounding region within the context of the story and we will continue to highlight cities like Sylvania, Perrysburg, Maumee and Waterville that add to the quality of life in Toledo. Those communities are a hugely important part of our story.” The Waterville Economic Development Corporation is on board with the Toledo Region branding, especially the “It Matters Where You Make It” tagline, said board member Phyllis Hyder. “We in Waterville are very supportive of the regional idea. If we don’t work together we’re all wasting our time,” Hyder said. “Most site selectors know what they are looking at is a region and not a particular city anyway.” Pat Nowak of the Sylvania Area Chamber of Commerce is cautiously optimistic about Toledo Region’s

A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com new direction, but said she would have preferred something broader. “While I applaud Toledo’s effort in its current rebranding and I am sure that in today’s times it is a necessity, I feel the region as a whole would have got more benefit from an areawide collaboration much like the very successful and widely acclaimed ‘Pure Michigan’ idea,” Nowak said. “In their campaign they have positively meshed regions, towns and cities to highlight and enhance the area.”

Buzz

The effort’s website and marketing materials were also redesigned by North Design. By utilizing photos posted by area residents on social media, the initiative takes on a more genuine feel, said Hostetler, the agency’s art director. “When you see this, you automatically know it’s not stock photography,” Hostetler said. “To mix some of that in with content that’s curated from the community, it all of a sudden actually feels like Toledo.” Schaaf said the arts community and many young professionals have embraced the new branding, but the goal is for it to resonate with everyone. “We’re really excited about the viral buzz we’ve created, but we want this to resonate with everyone,” Schaaf said. “That’s kind of

why we left it open-ended with ‘It matters where you make it,’ so you can say what makes it you and why you make it.” Mallette, chair of EPIC Toledo and product manager at HCR ManorCare, said he likes the “personal ownership” implied by the campaign. “I’m a person who’s all about ‘If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem,’” Mallette said. “I really like how it’s more than a ‘Hey guys, we’re Toledo, we’re great.’ It’s ‘This is your city, take ownership and move forward with it.’” Schaaf is unapologetic about focusing on the positive aspects of the region. “When you go on a job interview, you don’t tell them your faults; you tell them your strengths. We’re trying to promote the good stuff and, as we’re finding the negative stuff, we’re trying to work on that as well,” Schaaf said. “There are plenty of things we could talk about if you want to talk about problems. Those are not unique to Toledo. There are issues in every city. Our organization’s sole purpose is to promote the Toledo region and the positive assets and that’s what our focus is going to continue to be.”

Co-branding

Yarder, vice president of sheet metal fabricators The Yarder Manu-

facturing Company, is the first company to co-brand its logo with Toledo Region. A new Yarder Manufacturing box truck features the Toledo Region logo and tagline. “It made a lot of sense,” Yarder said. “To us, it matters where we’ve made it and we’ve been making it in Toledo for more than 100 years. “Driving around Michigan and Ohio with that truck, spreading the word, will unify the community a little more and people will start to understand what makes us tick here in the Toledo region and why we’re moving in the direction we’re moving and what matters to us,” Yarder said. “I’m not looking for direct results for my company, but rather a strong, bonded community. A community moving in a forward direction together is a better one to have your business in.” The new message is designed both to attract newcomers as well as inspire pride in residents. “You get into a room and you start talking about it and it starts to evoke emotion in people,” Schaaf said. “We’ve had people smiling ear to ear. People have said, ‘This makes me feel so proud to live here.’ I’ve had a couple people actually tear up [after reading the group’s positioning statement]. Someone on [our advisory council] said, ‘This

April 13, 2014 is exactly what we were looking for when we started!’

You Will Do Better

In mid-December, as North Design was tweaking the rebranding effort, a grassroots movement centered around the slogan You Will Do Better in Toledo emerged. Rather than worry it would compete with what Toledo Region was doing, Woodward said he sees the two messages as complementary. “In our mind, anything positive is something we should be able to take and use as part of the conversation that’s happening in the community,” Woodward said. “I love Holy Toledo, too. We think those are all positive messages. They are all phraseology people know and associate with our brand and they are all good things. It doesn’t have to compete. It can all work toward the same goal.” Branding is important, said Bill Thomas, executive director of the Downtown Toledo Improvement District. “There are people who think, ‘Oh, it’s a bunch of hogwash and we don’t need to do that,’” Thomas said. “The problem is, we have a lot of people who have lived here all their lives and like to talk negatively about Toledo. n BRANDING CONTINUES ON 10

Cost

As of the end of February, Toledo Region had spent about $800,000 over the nearly five-year effort, Schaaf said, including market research, website development, Web hosting, strategic planning, staff, marketing and more. The first phase of the initiative was the development of the initial concept and research. The second phase was developing the story and brand position. The third phase was creating the website and launching the brand. Phase four started in the fall when the group hired North Design and charged them with refreshing the brand. Schaaf, who joined Toledo Region in January 2013, is the only paid full-time staff member. There was also a paid summer intern last year. The majority of funding has come from private sources, Schaaf said. Although the City of Toledo has supported the initiative, it is not the primary funder, he said. He declined to disclose how much

North Design was paid for the rebranding or how much any particular group has contributed, but said costs are reasonable. “I’m very frugal and very cautious of what I’m spending because I’m working really hard to make sure that our message is getting across in the way that our funders and our community would like them to get across,” Schaaf said. “It looks like a lot when it’s a lump sum, but if you look at what other cities are doing, like Columbus, Pittsburgh, Des Moines, Iowa, they are spending $1 million a year and we haven’t even spent a million in five years. “If you break it down, we have about a million and a half people living in the region, so that’s less than a dollar per person over a fiveyear period.” Pittsburgh declined to release how much it has spent on its branding initiative. Representatives from Columbus and Des Moines were unable to be reached. Woodward said Toledo Region needs to spend more to truly compete with other cities. “So in five years, they’ve spent $150,000 per year promoting the region. What’s the GDP of the region? What percentage does that $800,000 equal? Look at a business and how a business promotes and sells itself. If we were to compare it to a business, what percentage of their revenue do they spend on marketing and sales so they are successful?” Woodward said. “We’re in the same type of environment where we are competing for resources, we’re competing for talent share, we’re competing for attention at the state level and the federal level for dollars.”

land and Columbus or other cities in our region who are doing a good job of building their brands, we’re going to have to fund it. If there are companies out there or individuals out there who believe in this mission then we need their help.” Woodward said he hopes the Toledo Region brand will attract

new residents as well as empower lifelong residents to share why they love Northwest Ohio. “Toledoans, as you know, we can be our own best ambassador or our own worst ambassador,” Woodward said. “It’s up to us when we’re visiting our friends [in other cities] and they ask, ‘Why do you

live in Toledo?’ Well, let’s tell them why. I think too many people shy away from the question. Part of the strength of putting together something we think resonates with the community is that we can start to tell that story in a positive way.” To learn more, visit the website toledoregion.com. O

“We need to have good material to talk about who we are in an authentic way because we have a great story to tell here. When people looking to live Downtown or move to Toledo ask, we want to have a great story that’s compelling enough to inspire follow-up questions.” Ryan Bunch, performing and literary arts coordinator at The Arts Commission, agreed, saying the new logo and tagline is “the right thing at the right time.” “People who 10-15 years ago would have gone to New York or LA are moving to Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus. And what those cities have in common is they’ve managed to make this kind of tough but welcoming persona for themselves. People are really attracted to that and Toledo is right smack dab in the middle of those three cities. “The view of the city from inside can be pretty negative and the view of the city from outside can be pretty negative, so I think it’s really important and vital at this moment, with all these things going on in the arts community and with the business and development that’s starting to happen, that the city really emphasizes the positive view of itself and put that out there for people to have something to connect to.”

A Toledo tradition since 2005

Regional branding: What other cities are doing By Danielle Stanton

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer news@toledofreepress.com

Toledo is among a growing list of cities around the Great Lakes and Rust Belt regions that have adopted branding campaigns. “A brand doesn’t just consist of a slogan or logo; a brand is a concept,” said Connie George, vice president of communications at the Greater Pittsburgh Convention & Visitors Bureau. The City of Pittsburgh has been working for two years to develop their brand, George said. They polled people in the city and past visitors from Cleveland, Baltimore and Buffalo, N.Y., on what they liked or didn’t like about the city. Leaders initially wanted to shed the city’s Rust Belt image, but discovered that people liked the city’s friendly, hardworking, progressive character. “People recognized that our Rust Belt reputation is indicative of building America. We decided to embrace that,” George said. The city recently rolled out the logo “Pittsburgh. Mighty. Beautiful.” The logo had a “great reception” in the community, George said. People living and working in the city are proud of their heritage, she said. She declined to release a cost, but said

much of the work was done in-house. Columbus created a logo that has gone viral — you can see it everywhere, on police cruisers, fire trucks and even when you fill up your gas, said Amy Tillinghast, vice president of marketing for Experience Columbus of the Greater Columbus Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Let’s face it, there’s 43 Columbuses — a lot of people have a Columbus and we wanted to claim that,” Tillinghast said. “Every city has bricks and mortar, but it is the experience of the people (that counts).”

Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman gathered the community in 2007 and said the city needed to develop its brand in honor of the city’s 2012 bicentennial. The move got people talking. They did a survey and soon the logo was born. Now, “COLUMBUS” with a star on top of the “us” in the word can be seen everywhere around the city. “It’s not just about the logo mark but the fact that we all started working together,” Tillinghast said. “The economic development group, the chamber of commerce, the philanthropic arm, the arts, the Ohio State University ... we all sit down once a month … and work together on a daily basis. “We are all working for the good of the city ... [the branding] makes us all think bigger,” Tillinghast said. A new branding initiative in Cleveland, #ThisIsCLE, was unveiled last month. It was developed by Positively Cleveland. Cincinnati has an initiative called Make Cincy Yours. Costs for these programs were not available. In Grand Rapids, Mich., the Kent County Convention & Visitors Bureau renamed itself the Experience Grand Rapids Convention & Visitors Bureau in 2010 as part of its branding initiative, said Doug Small, president and chief experience officer. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously here,” Small joked about his unusual title.

But the man charged with promoting the second largest city in Michigan does take his branding initiative seriously. “A brand is nothing more than a promise. It’s not a product — it’s a promise,” he said. “If you don’t develop on that promise you fail.” They picked “Experience Grand Rapids” because the name had a different connotation, Small said. “We let people’s minds soar and they can experience what they want and it’s a call to action,” he said. Grand Rapids boosts a huge art community, five museums, a symphony orchestra and more, Small said. “We changed our name … to better align our organization with what we do,” he said. “Our job is to promote the destination. We’re a destination marketing organization. We’re putting a face or brand on the destination.” Small said the branding initiative has cost between $75,000 and $100,000. Detroit has had success with branding initiative “The D,” said Toledo Region Brand Manager Jeff Schaaf. “They’ve captured the essence of that hip, young, entrepreneur, happening person within the downtown area and that culture they are trying to promote,” he said. “That’s kind of what we’re doing here.” O

“Our old history ends with the cross; our new history begins with the resurrection.” — Watchman Nee, Chinese evangelist The most important day on the Christian calendar is coming April 20, and Toledo-area churches are busy preparing for the occasion. The pivotal point in Christianity, hinges on Easter Sunday when Jesus’ followers celebrate his resurrection. For many Christian denominations, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter begins on Ash Wednesday and continues through the 40-day period of Lent. The seven days leading up to Easter are rich in ritual and spiritual intensity as churches hold services on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. This year the Eastern Orthodox observance of Pascha, or Easter, coincides with the Western church calendar. n EASTER CONTINUES ON 13

n EASTER CONTINUED FROM 12 “Palm Sunday, or the official title of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, is a kind of introduction to the celebration of the coming week,” said Monsignor Charles Singler, director of the Office of Divine Worship for the Toledo Catholic Diocese. “It is an introduction that provides a focus to the events that culminate at the end of the week with Easter.” CedarCreek Church, the nondenominational Christian megachurch, expects up to 17,000 people to attend eight services scheduled at each of its four campuses, for a total of 32 Easter services. Ben Snyder, regional campus director, will preach the Easter sermons. Lee Powell, senior pastor, said the church wants to make visitors who don’t normally attend church feel comfortable at the Easter services. “There is a little less congregational participation and more watching of a spectacular event that communicates the death of Christ and his resurrection, and the significance of that,” Powell said. “We’re hypersensitive to people visiting with us for the first time. We don’t take anything away, but we consider them in planning our Easter services.” The Rev. Chad Gilligan, lead pastor of Calvary Church in Maumee, is hoping for a combined 1,600 people at four Easter services in the former Maumee 18 movie theater. The church, at 1360 Conant St., is holding a Good Friday

Easter 13

A Toledo tradition since 2005 service at noon and three Easter morning services at 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. In addition, Calvary will start streaming its services live on the Internet starting Easter Sunday. “For us, Christmas and Easter are like the Super Bowl. They are a time of opportunity, for whatever reason, to see people’s lives touched by talking about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Full Holy Week schedule

Toledo Catholic Diocese has a full schedule of Holy Week services at its mother church, Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd. A Palm Sunday Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. April 13 with Monsignor William Kubacki presiding. The distribution of palms on Palm Sunday, following the biblical account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21), is a tradition in many Christian denominations including Roman Catholic, United Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches. Among the Holy Week traditions are foot-washing ceremonies held on Maundy Thursday, observed at most Catholic parishes and a number of Protestant churches including St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Toledo. Participants follow Jesus’ demonstration of servanthood when he washed his disciples’ feet (John 13:5). n EASTER CONTINUES ON 14

Lott Industries has developed a hydrostripping process that will help the City of Toledo save on the cost of traffic signs by stripping existing signs to the bare aluminum so they can be reused. Lott Industries and the City of Toledo will celebrate this new service during ribbon-cutting ceremonies April 15 at Lott’s facilities on Hill Avenue from 9 a.m. until noon. Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins and officials from the city, Lucas County and Lott will participate in the ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Revised federal guidelines require that traffic control signs be more reflective than previously, which creates a situation where it is not easy to reuse

signs, said Dennis Lechlak, commissioner of the Division of Transportation for the City of Toledo. The transportation division needed to find a way to both meet federal reflectivity guidelines and to refurbish used materials in the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly way possible, Lechlak said. The city’s chief planning engineer, Gary Stookey, and David Harris, superintendent of the sign shop for the transportation division, began researching options for stripping signs and reusing the clean aluminum blanks to produce new signs. They discovered hydrostripping, a relatively new process that removes the reflective material from the signs using ultra-high pressure waterjet technology. n LOTT CONTINUES ON 16

16 Business Link n LOTT CONTINUED FROM 15 However, the potential cost savings would have been nullified by the cost of shipping the signs to those who provided this service, Lechlak said. To solve that problem, Lechlak contacted Tim Menke, business development and sales manager at Lott, to see if they might be interested in finding a way to provide the service locally. “The City of Toledo came to us with a potential opportunity. We investigated it to determine its feasibility,” said Dan Clemens, engineering and quality manager at Lott. “We visited a company with a similar process about possibly buying the machine that performs it [but] it just wasn’t a good fit for the services we wanted to provide.” Instead, Clemens developed the concept and specifications for a hydrostripping operation that would meet their needs and be cost effective. He worked with automation and robotics in manufacturing with several firms in Northwest Ohio before joining Lott. Lott hired two Northwest Ohio companies to help produce the equip-

ment. Koester Corporation of Napoleon developed the detail design and manufactured the machine, while FS Solutions of Toledo provided the pump and high-pressure equipment for it, according to Clemens. “We teamed up to provide a customized solution utilizing local resources. It was a perfect fit for the City of Toledo, Lott and the services we provide,” Clemens said. “Lott analyzed the existing process and completely re-engineered it. They designed and built a machine to hydro-strip our used traffic signs that will be reused in making new signs,” Lechlak said. He said the city replaces about 13,000 signs annually, with the aluminum sheets for the signs costing about $2.15 per square foot. Lechlak estimates the city could save more than 25 percent on the cost of replacing those signs, reducing the cost of a new stop sign from $6.50 to $4 using the process at Lott. Assisted by an economic development loan from the City of Toledo

Department of Development, Lott Industries purchased and installed the hydrostripping operation at its facility on Hill Avenue. Because of the close proximity of that facility to the Division of Transportation on Westwood Avenue, there will be no shipping charges associated with the transport of signs for processing, Clemens said. The hydrostripping equipment has been tested and workers at Lott expect to begin transforming used traffic signs into blank aluminum sheets for

refurbishing almost immediately, Clemens said. Legislation for contract services is currently being drafted for the processing services between the City of Toledo and Lott Industries. Once City Council approves that legislation, Lott could begin processing signs for the city, according to Lisa Ward, public information officer for the City of Toledo. “It’s all about the partnership with Lucas County and the City of Toledo while doing it right environmentally

and saving money,” Clemens said. The process will provide training and work opportunities for some of Lott’s existing employees. He said they already have people lining up to learn the new operation. Lott Industries is a nonprofit corporation affiliated with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities that provides employment opportunities and training for individuals with developmental disabilities. Glass City gears up for 419 Day By Danielle Stanton Toledo Free Press STAR Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com

The Glass City will host a slew of events April 19 — from the Maker’s Mart to The Gallery Loop to an acrobatics show — in honor of the third annual 419 Day, a fete named for the city’s 419 area code and celebrating all things Toledo. To get a different perspective on the day, get out your smartphone for the Instagram meetups planned around the city — the inaugural 419 Day event for @IGers_Toledo, a newly formed group of photography and social media enthusiasts. The @IGers_Toledo, who snap pictures of the city for their Instagram pages, are planning a sunrise meetup at Oak Openings Metropark Lodge at 7:30 a.m., said the group’s founder, Jeff Jones of Snap It Photography. Breakfast and coffee will be provided. “It’s just a Toledo day for us,” Jones said, adding that Instagrammers will be coming to celebrate 419 Day from as far away as Indiana, Columbus, Cleveland and Ann Arbor. The Instagrammers will gather at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Monroe Street entrance at 10:15 a.m. for outdoor snaps and selfies with the museum as a backdrop. Registration for

the TMA meetup is requested but not required. For more information, visit toledomuseum.org/events/419-day. “We’re seeing a lot of buzz around it and we’re very excited to see just the amount of people and the diversity of the group,” said Stephanie Elton, TMA’s social media and digital communications manager. “Everybody is welcome.” Anyone who attends the TMA meetup is eligible to enter an Instagram contest. Attendees can share a photo tagged @toledomuseum and #419day by April 23 for a chance to win a prize package that includes a TMA family membership, gift cards, Toledo-themed items from local companies and more, Elton said. @IGers_Toledo will visit different locales around Downtown until 7 p.m. when everyone is invited to the Secor Building, 425 Jefferson Ave., for appetizers and an art showing, Jones said. RSVP at igerstoledo@gmail.com to be among the 100 in attendance. “At the party, we’ll have a projector for the photography for that day on the wall and a gallery wall of Instagram photos. There will be live music, maybe a guitar and a drum — we’ll keep it simple,” Jones said. Balance Pan-Asian Grille, an Asian restaurant with locations on West Central Avenue and in Maumee,

A donation is suggested that will go toward a new camera for Shared Lives Studio, an art gallery that supports adults with developmental disabilities in becoming working artists. The UpTown Association decided to nix its own event this year, which prompted rumors that 419 Day would be canceled. However, Julie Champa, executive director of the UpTown As-

sociation, said those rumors were false and that UpTown would be involved, just in a different way. “419 Day will still happen and we’ll still have activities within the neighborhood,” Champa said. “We were going to do our own event but we felt that our event was similar (to other events). ... Rather than duplicate the event, we decided to promote the event already existing.” n 419 DAY CONTINUES ON 19

n 419 DAY CONTINUED FROM 18 Champa said 419 Day is a “big day” and another way to spur economic development for the neighborhood. “April 19 is synonymous with the entire Toledo metro area,” Champa said. “Because our focus is on UpTown, we see it as another development tool to bring people into the district and hopefully patronize other businesses in the district. Any events going on really benefit all of us. It’s a big day for UpTown and the community as a whole.” The Maker’s Mart boasts nearly 50 vendors of handmade or specialty items in the UpTown neighborhood, said coordinator Betty Floored of Oh Sew Betty. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1717 Adams St. About three-quarters of the vendors are from Toledo and the rest hail from around the Midwest region, Floored said. 419 Day will mark the fourth Maker’s Mart. “Vendors can apply on our website. ... We have a jury of four people go through the applications, looking for uniqueness and price points and what they make and we try to get a wellrounded juried show so you don’t have so much of the same thing,” Floored said. “We like to switch up vendors so people who come aren’t seeing the same vendors over and over.” Two new vendors to the Maker’s Mart this year are Coffee Emergency, owned by Angie Cucunato, and Toledo Spirits, which sells specialty bitters for cocktails, owned by Andrew Newby. Newby also owns Black Kite Coffee with his wife, Kristin Kiser. The Toledo vendors will have badges on their tables that designate them as made in Toledo, Floored said. John Amato, owner of JUPMODE, plans to sell his specialty Toledo pride T-shirts at Maker’s Mart where he said business has always been good. He added a new 419 Day shirt to his collection, which includes the “You Will

Do Better in Toledo” design. “It’s going to be a really important day because ... it’s just a buildup of all the neat little things people have created in Toledo,” Amato said. “419 Day is another example of the momentum that Toledo has right now. Our city pride is growing and expanding through the region. So it is a really exciting and special time to be in Toledo.” You won’t see Amato’s new Tshirt truck at the Maker’s Mart this year. He’s still waiting on City Council to approve a new permit that allows him to park his truck in the Downtown corridor. People can experience many different forms of art during 419 Day at more than 30 participating galleries and studios in The Gallery Loop from 3-8 p.m. Downtown. A bus will transport people to the free event, which is a great way to appreciate local art and also a great way for local artists to get exposure, said Ryan Bunch, of the Arts Commission. “It’s a good opportunity for people to come down and explore and see the creativity,” Bunch said. “It’s also an opportunity for artists who don’t show or sell a lot. We usually have over 100 artists who work in sculpture, photography, painting, literary works, performance, so there’s a wide range of stuff. It’s a neat way for the arts community to come together.” “Stripes and Blooms: A Bird’s Eye View Student Showcase” is a student acrobatic show from 4:30-8:30 p.m. at the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Billed as a “colorful celebration of spring,” this free event will feature aerial stunts, stilt walking and partner acrobatics. Special guests will perform fire dancing and balancing moves. For more information on these events or to learn about more events, go to facebook.com/419day or twitter. com/419day. O

n BAUMHOWER CONTINUED FROM 20 A funny thing happened the following year when I announced I was moving back home to Toledo. My now former co-worker had an honest moment and told me the actual translation of the word “Chucci.” Let’s just say its usage will not be a bullet point for my Parental Hall of Fame application. Yet the

Star 21

A Toledo tradition since 2005

love I have for the word “Chucci” is equal to the little girl who proudly answers to it. When my son Brady started playing baseball, I was asked to be the coach. When he made a mistake or an error, I would catch myself cursing his name and other words in various combinations under my breath. The game of baseball features beautiful

colors on the field and more colorful words on the bench. My outbursts got louder and more booming and I needed to learn some new words, this world has no place for a cursing T-ball coach, nor should it. This is the origin of my “Jackie.” While Major League Baseball has No. 42, Jackie Robinson, the Sylvania Recreational T-Ball League in 2006

met its “Jackie” — via a tow-headed lefty named Braden “Jackie” Baumhower. The nickname “Jackie” was created out of necessity, a shortened public park-and-recreation-friendlier version of the word “Jackass.” It was easier calling my son “Jackie” than the choice words that were naturally forming in my mouth. If you have ever witnessed my coaching excellence, standing near third base with my booming voice yelling “RUN JACKIE,” you now understand. It didn’t take long for the nickname “Jackie” to catch on, nor was it exclusive to one child. All of my children are occasionally and lovingly referred to as my “Jackies.” Numerous boys and girls I have coached have earned the affectionate moniker, I even had a former baseball team that named themselves “The Jackies.” It’s mind-blowing how words and nicknames become a part of a family’s identity and dialogue; how a single moment of being a bad coach and possibly worse parent can enter the way

you forever communicate with your family or those in your community. The word “Jackie” was born out of my frustration with a 6-year-old’s inability to catch a pop-up and has now blossomed into one of the words I hold closest to my heart. My grandfather “Pete” was legally named Merlin after being born during the Depression into a family with no money. As a show of thanks and in lieu of payment, the good doctor named him Merlin. The day after Merlin was born, his uncle came to visit and gave him a more fitting nickname. “He looks like a Pete,” he said. He has never answered to Merlin. Only we as the human race have the power to create and/or change the meaning behind words and names we use. Pete has called me “Jerk” every day since I can remember. He took an ugly noun, spun it on it’s head and humorously filled it with love. It’s a skill set that he unintentionally passed on to me. To every child I have ever called “Jackie,” I love you. O

APRIL 13 – 20, 2014 Events: Mercury enters Aries (7th)

By Elizabeth Hazel Aries (March 21-April 19)

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Numerous calls and transactions arrive as the week begins. Strong opinions are aired; mature compromises center on serving the highest goals. Strange events may be very distracting. Find ways to assert your courage and willpower without undermining others.

People’s words and actions put you on the defensive. If others need to feel powerful, stand back and give plenty of time and space for full expression. Focus on private transformative efforts, and concentrate on what’s wonderful and empowering in your own sphere.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Other people’s head-butting can push you off-course this week. Focus on sources of inspiration, love, and blessings by connecting with nature and the goodness you find in others. As the week closes, you find stability through shared interests that trump individual egos.

There is great but quiet power in service. If you or someone close to you is floundering, there are invisible sources of strength at hand. Miracles are in the making. Let things flow as the weekend arrives. The wonders of the world’s mysteries level the playing field of humanity.

Gemini (May 21-June 21)

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

Situations around friends and loved ones move toward decision or breakdown. Maturity is needed. The residue of past events leaves insecurity that makes compromise difficult. After Friday, memorable performances inspire great deeds. You see people at their best and worst.

Other people are engaged in battles and contentions, but you may be focused on your own developments and creativity. Midweek visions and voices move you to the heights of expression. People are drawn like a magnet to your inner beauty as the weekend arrives.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Agreements are destabilized and too many people want to control the outcomes. Love can overcome fears, resistance, and entrenched ego ruts; strength of will is tested. As Friday arrives, you witness things that move heart and soul. Balance a strong stand with flexibility.

Major transformations of mind and body may transcend worldly struggles. Higher wisdom dissolves ego investments in taking a side or position. A loved one supports your new-found awareness and helps you stabilize your new path as the weekend arrives.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Discussions early in the week can be manic or excessive. People are too invested in their own side. Higher, invisible powers are at work midweek. Avoid making critical decisions on Thursday. Strong alliances generate support for comprehensive solutions on Friday.

Be cautious about being drawn into arguments with intellectual heavy-weights. Allow your personality to shine without scorching others. Bizarre midweek events shift the focus and topics of conversation. Relationships are a source of boundless love and benefits on Friday.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Other people and their interests predominate. Offer solutions and compromises and then stand back and wait. The week’s events may transform the basis of disputed situations. Love and intimacy are highly favorable on Friday; personal acceptance stabilizes loyalties and affection.

You are naturally drawn to love, beauty, and mysteries, and these are given full expression this week. Others may flounder in odd circumstances where you flourish. Friday brings triumphs in emotional connections. Let your love radiate to everyone around you.
