Military Yearbook 2013 Honoring heroes S L ince the inception of our nation, citizens serving in the military, both overseas and at home, have vigilantly and bravely defended the liberties and freedoms on which this country was founded. The unwavering loyalty and sacrifices our veterans and their families have made for our country is the very reasons Americans are able to enjoy the freedoms and rights we cherish today. Our veterans and their families have honored their commitments to this nation, and whether it is disability, retirement, health and survivor benefits, employment and educational training or other issues important to veterans, we must ensure our veterans receive the benefits they were promised and have rightfully earned. But many veterans are forced to wait an unprecedented amount of time before their benefits claims are processed. According to a recent report released from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the average wait time for veterans’ benefits claims is over 300 days. In the state of Ohio, I have heard stories from veterans who have had to wait nearly a year and a half for their claims to be processed. With over 800,000 veterans in Ohio, this is unacceptable — our veterans, in the state and throughout the nation, deserve better more efficient service from the VA. While the VA Rep. Bob LATTA and is aggressively pursuing a plan to significantly reduce the claims backlog, it is imperative that Congress continues to work with the VA to achieve the goal of processing all claims within 125 days, and to streamline the process to guarantee a system that is less frustrating and easier to navigate. During this tough economy, the unemployment rate among our veterans, particularly those veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan, remains to be very troubling. While the national unemployment rate causes great concern for all Americans, recent unemployment reports released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed an alarming unemployment rate for Iraq- and Afghanistan-era veterans. As a member of the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus, I have worked toward providing common-sense solutions to remove the roadblocks for veterans who have already completed training and have the needed skills for jobs that utilize their military training. I was proud to support the Veterans Opportunity to Work to Hire Heroes Act, a comprehensive jobs package that included provisions to lower the rate of unemployment among our nation’s veterans. This bill was signed into law, and while some good strides have been made on the legislative side, we must continue to work to find widespread solutions that assist all veterans with the transition back to civilian life and empower them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. While our nation is coping with budget shortfalls, we cannot allow politics to get in the way of one of our fundamental responsibility to care for our veterans. I extend my gratitude and appreciation to all veterans who have answered the call of service to our great country and have fought to defend the values, liberties and freedoms that we as Americans hold so dear – they are true heroes for the sacrifices they and their families have made. However, honoring those who have served must be reflected in more than holidays and homecoming parades; it should be shown in our commitment to upholding our promise of veterans’ benefits and to caring for our wounded warriors and the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. O Rep. Bob Latta (R) is the U.S. Representative for Ohio’s 5th Congressional District. For more information, visit his website at latta.house.gov.

ast July, Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller and Toledo Free Press demonstrated trust in me and executed a vision I had. The original Military Yearbook concept evolved from my review of those local mug shot magazines, “publications” that exploit personal problems for monetary gains. When I heard about the commercial success those rags generate, I wanted to show the power of print, but I wanted to do so in a positive way. Instead of showcasing thugs with rap sheets, why not honor those who deserve it most, the men and women of the Armed Forces? My goal for the Military Yearbook was to create a keepsake for and a thank you to all those families n The telegram my grandfather, Merlin “Pete” Zunk, carwho make sacrifices. A

s a child, it’s all I knew. Dad met my mother after he crashed his military fighter plane into Pépé Bergeron’s house in Groton, Conn. I didn’t think it was all that big of deal. After all, what does a 12-year-old boy know about how parents meet? I first remember hearing the story when my brother Larry showed me an old newspaper clipping stored in a cedar chest. There was a photo of dad and mother kissing, the same one that hung on the living room wall. The story was about dad, a Navy pilot, making a routine night flight from a Navy facility in Charlestown, R.I., on Oct. 19, 1944, as the U.S. was on the verge of winning World War II. Dad’s plane developed engine trouble and was going down. He could have ejected from the plane and let it crash. But he was flying over a populated area and decided to try to navigate the plane over the Thames River to avoid crashing into an area where people lived. He couldn’t make it to the river. At the last minute, he had to choose — hit a school building or aim for a parking lot. He chose the second option, which meant he was going to have to come in over a neighborhood of houses. Dad didn’t clear the final house. The Aug. 19, 1945, Sunday Mirror magazine reported: “Heading straight for the house of Mr. and Mrs. Philbert L. Bergeron, the plane sheared the roof off the two-story dwelling, ripped a blanket from the crib of a sleeping baby, showering the infant with debris, then crashed into a concrete school building. “The baby was 2-year-old Alma Norton, child of Bergeron’s other daughter, Mrs. Thomas Norton. It was barely scratched by falling plaster.” No one else was injured. However, dad suffered severe back injuries and the newspaper reported he was hospitalized for several months. Several months later, the Bergerons “decided they’d like to have a look at the young roof-buster,” 24-year-old William McCartney of Toledo, the newspaper reported. They sent him an invitation to a housewarming party, and on New Year’s Day 1945, my dad attended the party. As the clipping reported: “Lt. McCartney went into another nosedive. This time it was a romantic one, for he was introduced to Celia, 25, in her trim blue SPAR [Coast Guard] uniform. “The first time McCartney visited the Bergeron house, he came to apologize. The second and many successive times he came to court Celia,” — a name only her parents called her; everyone else knew my mother as Alice. “The romance had the same whirlwind qualities as McCartney’s derring-do intrusion onto the family for, in May, the lieutenant announced he would marry into the family.” On Oct. 19, 1971 — my senior year in high school — the Groton News published a follow-up story about the airplane crash 27 years earlier. The article reported that my mother laughed when she recalled the circumstances under which she met her husband. “I guess marriages are made in heaven — we have a good marriage and fine children. We’re proud of all 11 of them. And our 18-month-old grandson,” she said. Like all good stories, some of the little details have changed. The 1971 article reported the house had three floors, not two. The child in the crib was now 2 and 1/2 years old and had a scratch on her chin and a cut on her

Bill and ALice — 1945 wedding portrait forehead from the falling debris. Dad was hospitalized several weeks, not months. The school was undamaged except for a broken window and a fallen drainpipe — although it was closed for one day so the plane could be removed. However, I learned something from the 1971 article that I refused to accept as coincidence. It convinced me that my parents’ marriage was indeed something special. The students who attended Col. Ledyard School had to make up the day they missed on June 2, 1945 — the day of mother and dad’s wedding. Dad’s been gone 32 years; my mother’s been gone six. Today, as a 58-year-old almost-senior-citizen, I am acutely aware of how special that marriage was and how well they did raising their children. All 11 have been productive citizens. Eight graduated from college. Seven of the nine who married have enjoyed strong, loving marriages — something they learned growing up as Bill and Alice’s children. The other two, of which I am one, screwed up their marriages on their own. And both those failed marriages saddened mother and dad deeply — almost as if it was their fault. None of Bill and Alice’s children went the big family route. When mother passed in 2006, seven of her children had given her 17 grandchildren. However, Bill and Alice’s 10 living children — Phil passed away last year — live their lives as testimony to what fell from the early morning skies 68 years ago. O John P. Local officials thank service members, vets EDITOR’S NOTE: Toledo Free Press invited local elected officials to share their thoughts on the U.S. military. — Compiled by Bailey G. Dick

More appreciative We kicked off this summer celebrating veterans by bringing the traveling Vietnam War Memorial to Toledo. This weeklong tribute was an opportunity to meet those men and women who have served; hear their stories; shake BELL their hands, look them in the eyes and say “thank you.” The experience made me even more appreciative of the sacrifices our veterans from all wars have made to protect the freedoms we enjoy. I extend my thanks to those who are serving today around the globe and to all veterans who have made America the country it is. We will never forget your sacrifice, dedication and honor. O MIKE BELL, Mayor of Toledo

Service and sacrifice Nearly 900,000 veterans call Ohio home. My greatest privilege as the only Ohio senator to serve a full term on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee is helping to ensure that they receive the benefits and services they’ve earned. That’s why I joined a bipartisan group of senators in passing legislation that guarantees timely funding for the VA; establishes tax credits for BROWN employers that hire unemployed veterans; and establishes the largest increase in education funding for veterans since the GI Bill was passed after World War II. I’m also working to connect veterans with veterans’ service organizations to significantly decrease the VA backlog, and I’ve introduced legislation that would give veterans and their families a cost of living adjustment for disability benefits. Lucas County alone is home to thousands of retired and active duty military men and women. Toledo’s federally funded Community Based Outpatient Clinic is a state-of-the-art facility that honors those veterans by

protecting their health. As Co-Chair of the Senate Air Force Caucus, I’m also committed to preserving important work at Ohio’s military installations, including the 180th Fighter Wing in Swanton. As we celebrate July 4th, let’s all thank our service members, veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice that guarantees the freedom we all enjoy. O Sherrod Brown, U.S. Senator

Freedom — because of our veterans

Freedom is not free; it never has been nor will it ever be. Our freedom is something that we Americans too often take for granted. After all, we are entitled to be free because we are Americans. The notion of entitlement is a comfortable mindset — after all, it is right and just! Let us “peel COLLINS the onion” and see where that leads us: Freedom of the press was not created by journalists; it was fought for and exists because of our military veterans. Freedom of religion was not created by a church, mosque or synagogue; it exists only because of our military veterans. Freedom of speech was not created by the executive, legislative or judicial branches of government; it exists because of the sacrifices of our military veterans. In fact, this list could continue but the consistent and only plausible response is freedom exists only because of our veterans. We must never take for granted the blood which has been shed by the brave men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we enjoy today, yesterday and tomorrow continue. Semper Fi. O D. Michael Collins, Toledo City Council member and mayoral candidate

Admire and respect I don’t know that I can adequately express my appreciation for the men and women who serve and served our country. It is very sobering when I see the phrase: “All gave some, some gave all.” But I wonder how many of us on the outside looking in fully realize the

sacrifices that many of them make involving family, careers and emotions. Two members of our union have served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and our new associate pastor is a chaplain with the Ohio Army National Guard. As chaplain he has dealt with the trauma and grief that occurs in a hostile environment. There is no way I could ever sufficiently express my gratitude but hopefully our military personnel and veterans will accept this feeble attempt to let them know I admire and respect them and honor them as the ultimate in public servants. O Alan Cox, AFSCME Local 2058 president and mayoral candidate

Sincerest gratitude Happy Fourth of July! As we reflect with our families on the vision and dreams the Founding Fathers had for our nation, I want to offer my sincerest gratitude to the brave men and women who have and continue to serve our country. I am the proud sister of a service member. I understand the worries and LOPEZ concerns military families have and I want to thank them for all of the sacrifices they make toward the betterment of our country and the world we live in. If not for the dedication of the active members of our armed forces, the veterans that came before them and all of their families, we would not be the great nation we are today. I wish everyone a safe, peaceful and festive Independence Day. God bless America. O Anita Lopez, Lucas County Auditor and mayoral candidate

Appreciate sacrifices The Board of Lucas County Commissioners extends our warmest wishes to the local brave men and women of the armed forces as well as veterans who have served in the past. We appreciate the sacrifices they have made and continue to make to protect our freedom and to keep our country safe. In Lucas County, we continually work hard to honor our local servicemen and women, both past and present. Located at The Source Downtown, The Lucas County Veterans Service Commission delivers crucial services for our veterans in need by

In 2012, the Commission initiated a new program through which honorably discharged veterans are eligible for a Veteran ID card at no cost. To date, over 2,800 ID cards have been issued and the number continues to grow. Many businesses in Lucas County offer veterans’ discounts to cardholders. Every year on Veterans Day, we collaborate with community partners to host a breakfast and resource fair for veterans and currently serving men and women. This token of our appreciation is free for all veterans and active duty personnel and their families. The men and women of the armed forces have sacrificed much to protect this country. We are pleased to honor all veterans as well as active duty personnel who continue to defend our great nation. O Carol Contrada, Tina Skeldon Wozniak and Pete Gerken, Lucas County Commissioners

Proud and grateful Thanks to Toledo Free Press for this fine Military Yearbook issue. I am proud and grateful to the men and women who have served and currently serve in our armed forces. Their sacrifices over many generations have preserved our freedoms and kept us safe in our country and abroad. At my church, Holy Trinity Lutheran, each Sunday we pray for our troops as LUDEMAN a whole, named service men and women with a connection to our church, and for the veterans, especially those injured and in hospitals. I encourage all others to do the same. O Rob Ludeman, Toledo City Council

I’m thankful to the men and women of our military who allow us to have the freedoms we all enjoy. As , I will ensure that the city does all McNAMARA it can to support those who have served our great country. O Joe McNamara, Toledo City Council member and mayoral candidate

Reflect upon sacrifices We began our journey toward democracy 238 years ago when the American Revolution began, but without those who were willing to sacrifice their lives, we would have never won our independence. Today, just as many years ago, we owe our freedom and SARANTOU our continued independence to those who serve in our military. It is in my opinion important that as we approach this Fourth of July that we reflect on the history of our democracy. We should also reflect upon the sacrifices that were made for us to achieve what we have and what members of our armed forces have done for us past, present and future. O George Sarantou, Toledo City Council

Lasting respect

I write in the memory of my father, Robert, a World War II veteran of the United States Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees). He served in the Pacific theater as a young man, fresh from Altoona, Pa. My dad rarely talked about his experiences in the war, but I know his service left him with a lasting respect for the sanctity of human life and for the ideals of liberty and justice on which this country was founded. Thanks, Dad, for instilling in me the importance of public service and making every day count. And in his honor, thanks to all military veterans for your contributions to the American ideal of freedom. O Steve Steel, Toledo City Council

Colleen Klausner, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, is exceptionally proud of her three sons. After all, they do take after her and her husband Kent, also a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Ed, 21, is a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy and wants to go into Marine aviation. “I just can’t say how proud I am,” Colleen said of her oldest child. Middle son Peter, 19, is a sophomore in Bowling Green State University’s ROTC program and a member of the Ohio National Guard. Peter was so committed to joining the military, he started basic training the summer between his junior and senior year of high school, Colleen said. “He was probably the baby of the group, but he’s tall,” Colleen said with a laugh. The youngest son, Sam, 16, plays for St. Francis de Sales High School’s quiz bowl team and plans to follow in Peter’s footsteps. “I don’t know if it’s me or Kent, my hubby, but they’re all very comfortable in their own skin,” Colleen said of her boys. Colleen said she and her husband, who live in Lambertville, Mich., didn’t actively push for their children to join the military, but that it happened naturally. “They just naturally gravitated toward military things, military movies; I go home and turn the TV on and it’s the Military.com channel,” Colleen said. Ed, who along with Peter was trekking across Europe on a summer adventure at press time, said in an email, “I was inspired by the challenge and adventure of a career in the military, particularly of a career as a Marine officer. My brother, Peter,

says that he was inspired to join the military because of the knowledge and experience he would gain from no other organization.” Colleen, who works in the University of Toledo’s ROTC human resources department, joined ROTC as a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University. Colleen met Kent, who works for a Chicago electric company and commutes on weekends, while they were on duty in Germany in 1987. Her father and Kent’s father were both naval officers as well. The hardest part of being in a military family is knowing your spouse is missing major events while he or she is on deployment, Colleen said. Both she and Kent were deployed to the Middle East on separate occasions. Ed wrote, “This made us stronger as a family because as brothers we had to help out each other when one parent was away.” He also said, “We are particularity proud of our Mom’s actions in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she received a combat action badge and our Dad’s achievements during Desert Storm.” Colleen, who had been working in sales, was deployed to Baghdad in 2003 after going back into active duty. “I got a FedEx letter and within 24 hours, I was gone. It was just like that fast,” Colleen said, snapping her fingers. “It was really harder on Kent because all I had to do was take care of myself. He had to work and take care of the three boys and make sure things were fine at home,” she said. Colleen added that the community looked out for the family, leaving them lasagna on the porch and driving the boys to hockey practice. “When my husband was deployed, I never got the lasagna on the porch,” Colleen said with a chuckle. dents, especially the female students and those going to airborne school, where they prepare to jump out of planes, like she did. Colleen said, “Just look at the horizon. Don’t look at that ground because that ground will come up fast.”

In regards to being a woman in service, Colleen said being physically fit made the men in the Army more ready to accept her. “It’s sad. (That shouldn’t be like that) because there’s so many strong, great women that maybe aren’t as

Supporting our troops, past and present.

My baby brother enlisted in the Army in 2011. He was with me when I was notified of my husband Sgt. Arthur Mora’s death in Iraq in 2005. We have a great bond and I miss him more than anything now that he’s in the Army. You can imagine my heartache when he made the decision to serve his country. This was his decision though and we as a family support him wholeheartedly. In September 2011, he deployed to Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and was out of country for the rest of 2011. When he came home, I finally got my welcome home hug that I was deprived of back in 2005, and it was amazing! Currently, he is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, as a military police officer.

OpLove captures emotional moments for military families

I

met Ohioan Stephanie Strickfaden in December. The soon-to-beTexan was overweight and missing her husband, Chad, who was deployed in Afghanistan. In the next six months, she lost 50 pounds and wanted her husband to see it. Through Operation Love Reunited, the new Strickfaden has been revealed to her husband. “With my husband Brandi deployed this year, we were unable to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Mail has been ordered to stop so I couldn’t send him anything. This became the perfect opportunity to take advantage of OpLove,” Strickfaden said. Strickfaden normally doesn’t like to be photographed, but her OpLove photographer, Karen Menyhart, made her feel comfortable. “She gave my husband and I an

unforgettable gift and at her own expense. It was a wonderful experience,” Strickfaden said. OpLove is a nonprofit that offers free professional photography sessions to military families. Menyhart got involved in OpLove because she was looking for a way to give back as a photographer. She applied and was accepted. Normally, BARHITE OpLove photographers send the photos overseas, but the timing of this photo session and the no-mail order made an online gallery better for Chad. Each participating family or member may receive two sessions per year, according to the OpLove website. The session choices are pre-deployment, saying goodbye, already deployed and homecoming. The photographer donates all services (shooting,

editing, the album and postage). Menyhart will be doing a homecoming shoot in 2014. Those are special because family members sometimes forget to take pictures when they are wrapped up in their emotions, she said. OpLove photographers can capture the home-

coming as it unfolds. “It is really cool. I am excited to do it. It is a nice, neat way to give back,” Menyhart said. Since OpLove was founded in 2006, there have been 10,000 clients in the United States, she said. “We do have photographers in

every state, except a couple New England states, but we have nearby photographers that travel to cover those few,” she wrote in an email. To get involved in OpLove, visit www.oplove.org/blog. To view Karen Menyhart’s photos, visit www.karen menyhartphotography.com. O

To qualify, you must meet the following as well as other study criteria: ● You must be at least 18 years of age ● Have had chronic neuropathic pain for at least 6 months after a physical trauma (burn, fall, motor vehicle accident, sports injury etc.) or surgery If you do qualify to participate and choose to do so, involvement would be for about 17 weeks and would include up to 7 visits to the study center.
